Recently, a layer-stacked ESN model named deep echo state Network (DeepESN) has been established. As an interactional model of recurrent neural network and deep neural network, investigations of DeepESN are of significant importance in both areas. Optimizing the structure of neural networks remains a common task in artificial neural networks, and the question of how many neurons should be used in each layer of DeepESN must be stressed. In this paper, our aim is to solve the problem of choosing the optimized size of DeepESN. Inspired by the sensitive iterative pruning algorithm, a neuronal similarity-based iterative pruning merging algorithm (NS-IPMA) is proposed to iteratively prune or merge the most similar neurons in DeepESN. Two chaotic time series prediction tasks are applied to demonstrate the effectiveness of NS-IPMA. The results show that the DeepESN pruned by NS-IPMA outperforms unpruned DeepESN with the same network size, and NS-IPMA is a feasible and superior approach to improving the generalization performance of DeepESN.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a current trend in computer science, which extends itself its amazing capacities to other technologies such as mechatronics and robotics. Going beyond technological applications, the philosophy behind AI is that there is a vague and potential convergence of artificial manufacture and natural world although the limiting approach may be still very far away, but why? The implicit problem is that Darwin theory of evolution focuses on natural world where breeding conservation is the cornerstone of the existence of creature world but there is no similar concept of breeding conservation in artificial world whose things are created by human. However, after developing for a long time until now, AI issues an interesting concept of generation in which artifacts created by computer science can derive their new generations inheriting their aspects / characteristics. Such generated artifacts make us look back on offsprings by the process of breeding conservation in natural world. Therefore, it is possible to think that AI generation, which is a recent subject of AI, is a significant development in computer science as well as high-tech domain. AI generation does not help us to reach near biological evolution even in the case that AI can combine with biological technology but, AI generation can help us to extend our viewpoint about Darwin theory of evolution as well as there may exist some uncertain relationship between man-made world and natural world. Anyhow AI generation is a current important subject in AI and there are two main generative models in computer science: 1) generative model that applies large language model into generating natural language texts understandable by human and 2) generative model that applies deep neural network into generating digital content such as sound, image, and video. This technical report focuses on deep generative model (DGM) for digital content generation, which is a short summary of approaches to implement DGMs. Researchers can read this work as an introduction to DGM with easily understandable explanations.

Fundus vascular images are essential for diagnosing various ophthalmic diseases. With deep learning and image processing development, fundus image segmentation methods based on computer vision have become more common. However, the UNet model faces challenges such as the loss of spatial resolution during downsampling and difficulties in simultaneously capturing global context and local details, especially for small objects and complex boundaries. We propose the Detail Enhanced Temporal Fusion Network (DETF-Net) to overcome these issues. This network incorporates a detail feature enhancement module (DFEM) to preserve boundary features and a dynamic temporal fusion module (DTFM) to improve robustness across different scales. The DFEM uses median pooling, spatial attention, and hybrid convolution to retain detail, while the DTFM extracts local and global features and adapts to dynamic changes in blood vessel structures. Evaluation on DRIVE, CHASE_DB1, and STARE datasets shows that DETF-Net achieves accuracy of 0.9865, 0.9877, and 0.9878, and specificity of 0.9865, 0.9870, and 0.9875, respectively, outperforming existing models. These results demonstrate DETF-Net's effectiveness in fundus image segmentation.

The advent of the era of big data has led to the emergence of heterogeneous network data fusion as a prominent area of research. Heterogeneous network data is characterised by multi-modality, multi-source, and high dimensionality, which presents significant challenges for traditional data fusion methods. These methods often encounter difficulties in processing such data, including issues such as information redundancy, data inconsistency, and high computational complexity. This paper proposes a heterogeneous network data fusion model based on a deep neural network. The model employs the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) as its fundamental framework, utilising the deep neural network to facilitate joint feature representation learning on data from disparate modalities. The Adaptive Feature Reconstruction Module enables the model to learn the interrelationships between different modalities and to balance the importance of different modal features in the fusion process in a dynamic manner. Furthermore, we introduce an innovative cross-modal attention mechanism, which is capable of effectively capturing the coupling relationship between deep features in heterogeneous data, thereby enhancing the expressiveness and data fusion efficacy of the model. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model markedly enhances the accuracy of classification and regression tasks in comparison to traditional methodologies.

The calculation of echo intensity involved in the SAR image simulation is usually based on the electromagnetic formula or approximate formula derived under certain assumptions. However, the parameters used in these formulas are often difficult to obtain, and the formulas have errors with the actual situation. In this paper, a method of embedding deep neural network (DNN) into the simulation process based on ray tracing is proposed, so that the DNN model can be directly used to fit the calculation formula of echo intensity from real SAR images. Simulation results show that this method can obtain SAR images with high similarity.

This study discusses the application of deep learning technology in network intrusion detection systems (IDS) and focuses on a new model named CNN-Focal. First, through the review of traditional IDS technology, it analyzes its limitations in dealing with complex network traffic. Then, the design principle of the CNN-Focal model is described in detail, which uses threshold convolution and SoftMax multi-class classification technology to effectively improve abnormal traffic detection's accuracy and efficiency. The experimental results show that CNN-Focal performs well on the open data set, demonstrating the potential and advantages of its application in the natural network environment and providing a new perspective and method for further research of deep learning in the field of network security in the future.

Deep learning methods paired with sidescan sonar (SSS) are commonly used in underwater search and rescue operations for drowning victims, wrecks, and airplanes. However, these techniques are primarily designed to detect mine-like objects and are rarely applied to identifying features in dynamic dredge pit environments, due to a lack of datasets. In this study, we present a Sandy Point Dredge Pit (SPDP) dataset, in which high-resolution SSS data were collected from the west flank of Mississippi bird foot delta of the Louisiana inner shelf. This dataset contains a total of 385 SSS images. We introduce an Effective Geomorphology Classification model (EGC). By ablation studies, we analyze the utility of transfer learning on different model architectures and the impact of data augmentations on model performance. This EGC model will make geomorphic features identification in dredge pit environments quick and efficient which requires extensive experience and professional knowledge. The combination of SSS images and EGC model is a cost-effective and valuable toolkit for hazards monitoring in marine dredge pit environment. The SPDP SSS images dataset, especially the feature of pit wall without rotational slump, is also valuable for other machine learning modelers.

Solar ultraviolet (UV) is among the most important ecological factors shaping the composition of biota on the planet surface, including upper layers of waterbodies. Inhabitants of dark environments recently descending from surface organisms provide natural opportunities to study the evolutionary losses of UV adaptation mechanisms and better understand how those mechanisms function at the biochemical level. Ancient Lake Baikal is the only freshwater reservoir, where deep-water fauna emerged, and its diverse endemic amphipods (Amphipoda, Crustacea) now inhabit the whole range from highly transparent littoral to dark depths of over 1600 m, which makes them a convenient model to study UV adaptation. Here we show that adults of deep-water Baikal amphipods Ommatogammarus flavus and O. albinus indeed have high sensitivity to environmentally relevant UV levels in contrast to littoral species Eulimnogammarus cyaneus and E. verrucosus. The UV intolerance was more pronounced in deeper-dwelling O. albinus and was explainable by lower levels of carotenoids and carotenoid-binding proteins. Signs of oxidative stress were not found but specifically UV-B seemingly led to accumulation of toxic compounds. Overall, the obtained results demonstrate that UV is an important factor limiting distribution of deep-water amphipods into the littoral zone of Lake Baikal.

Crawling robots are the focus of intelligent inspection research, and the main feature of this type of robot is the flexibility of in-plane attitude adjustment. The crawling robot HIT_Spibot is a new type of steam generator heat transfer tube inspection robot with a unique mobility capability different from traditional quadrupedal robots. This paper introduces a hierachical motion planning approach for HIT_Spibot, aiming to achieve efficient and agile maneuverability. The proposed method integrates three distinct planners to handle complex motion tasks: a nonlinear optimization-based base motion planner, a TOPSIS-based base orientation planner, and a Mask-D3QN (MD3QN) algorithm-based gait motion planner. Initially, the robot's base and foot workspace are delineated through envelope analysis, followed by trajectory computation using Larangian methods. Subsequently, the TOPSIS algorithm is employed to establish an evaluation framework conducive to foundational turning planning. Finally, the MD3QN algorithm trains foot points to facilitate robot movement along predefined paths. Experimental results demonstrate the method's adaptability across diverse tube structures, showcasing robust performance even in environments with random obstacles. Compared to the D3QN algorithm, MD3QN achieves a 100% success rate, enhances average overall scores by 6.27%, reduces average stride lengths by 39.04%, and attains a stability rate of 58.02%. These results not only validate the effectiveness and practicality of the method but also showcase the significant potential of HIT_Spibot in the field of industrial inspection.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has been developing with many incredible achievements like ChatGPT and Bard. Deep generative model (DGM) is a branch of GenAI, which is preeminent in generating raster data such as image and sound due to strong points of deep neural network (DNN) in inference and recognition. The built-in inference mechanism of DNN, which simulates and aims to synaptic plasticity of human neuron network, fosters generation ability of DGM which produces surprised results with support of statistical flexibility. Two popular approaches in DGM are Variational Autoencoders (VAE) and Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). Both VAE and GAN have their own strong points although they share and imply underline theory of statistics as well as incredible complex via hidden layers of DNN when DNN becomes effective encoding/decoding functions without concrete specifications. In this research, VAE and GAN is unified into a consistent and consolidated model called Adversarial Variational Autoencoders (AVA) in which VAE and GAN complement each other, for instance, VAE is good at generator by encoding data via excellent ideology of Kullback-Leibler divergence and GAN is a significantly important method to assess reliability of data which is realistic or fake. In other words, AVA aims to improve accuracy of generative models, besides AVA extends function of simple generative models. In methodology this research focuses on combination of applied mathematical concepts and skillful techniques of computer programming in order to implement and solve complicated problems as simply as possible.

The increasing growth in knowledge about functioning of the nervous system of mammals and humans, as well as the significant neuromorphic technologies development in recent decades, have led to the emergence of a large number of brain-computer interfaces and neuroprosthetics for the regenerative medicine tasks. Neurotechnologies have traditionally been developed for therapeutic purposes to help or replace motor, sensory or cognitive abilities damaged by injury or disease. They also have significant potential for memory enhancement. However, there are still no fully developed neurotechnologies and neural interfaces capable of restoring or expanding cognitive functions, in particular memory, in mammals or humans. In this regard, the search for new technologies in the field of restoration of cognitive functions is an urgent task of modern neurophysiology, neurotechnology and artificial intelligence. Hippocampus is an important brain structure connected to memory and information processing in the brain. The aim of this paper is to propose an approach based on deep neural networks for prediction of hippocampal signals in CA1 region based on received biological input in CA3 region. We compare results of prediction for two widely used deep architectures: reservoir computing (RC) and long short-term memory (LSTM) networks. Proposed study can be viewed as a first step in the complex task of the development of a neurohybrid chip, which allows one to restore memory functions in the damaged rodent hippocampus.

Tremendous progress has been witnessed in artificial intelligence within the domain of neural network backed deep learning systems and its applications. As we approach the post Moore’s Law era, the limit of semiconductor fabrication technology along with a rapid increase in data generation rates have lead to an impending growing challenge of tackling newer and more modern machine learning problems. In parallel, quantum computing has exhibited rapid development in recent years. Due to the potential of a quantum speedup, quantum based learning applications have become an area of significant interest, in hopes that we can leverage quantum systems to solve classical problems. In this work, we propose a quantum deep learning architecture; we demonstrate our quantum neural network architecture on tasks ranging from binary and multi-class classification to generative modelling. Powered by a modified quantum differentiation function along with a hybrid quantum-classic design, our architecture encodes the data with a reduced number of qubits and generates a quantum circuit, loading it onto a quantum platform where the model learns the optimal states iteratively. We conduct intensive experiments on both the local computing environment and IBM-Q quantum platform. The evaluation results demonstrate that our architecture is able to outperform Tensorflow-Quantum by up to 12.51% and 11.71% for a comparable classic deep neural network on the task of classification trained with the same network settings. Furthermore, our GAN architecture runs the discriminator and the generator purely on quantum hardware and utilizes the swap test on qubits to calculate the values of loss functions. In comparing our quantum GAN, we note our architecture is able to achieve similar performance with 98.5% reduction on the parameter set when compared to classical GANs. With the same number of parameters, additionally, QuGAN outperforms other quantum based GANs in the literature for up to 125.0% in terms of similarity between generated distributions and original data sets.

With advancements in digital technologies such as 5G communications, big data, and cloud computing, the components of network operation systems have become increasingly complex, significantly complicating system monitoring and maintenance. Correspondingly, automated log anomaly detection has become a crucial means to ensure stable network operation and protect them from malicious attacks or failures. Conventional machine learning and deep learning methods assume consistent distributions between the training and testing data, adhering to a closed-set recognition paradigm. Nevertheless, in realistic scenarios, systems may encounter new anomalies that were not present in the training data, especially in log anomaly detection. Inspired by evidential learning, we propose a novel anomaly detector called LogEDL, which supervises training of the model through an evidential loss function. Unlike traditional loss functions, the evidential loss function not only focuses on correct classification, but also quantifies the uncertainty of predictions. This enhances the robustness and accuracy of the model in handling anomaly detection tasks, while achieving functionality similar to open-set recognition. To evaluate the proposed LogEDL method, we conduct extensive experiments on three datasets, i.e., HDFS, BGL, and Thunderbird, to detect anomalous log sequences. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed LogEDL achieves state-of-the-art performance in anomaly detection.

Computer network attacks are evolving in parallel with the evolution of hardware and neural network architecture. Despite major advancements in Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS) technology, most implementations still depend on signature-based intrusion detection systems, which can’t identify unknown attacks. Deep learning can help NIDS to detect novel threats since it has a strong generalization ability. The deep neural network’s architecture has a significant impact on the model’s results. We propose a genetic algorithm based model to find the optimal number of hidden layers and the number of neurons in each layer of the deep neural network (DNN) architecture for the network intrusion detection binary classification problem. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DNN architecture shows better performance than classical machine learning algorithms at a lower computational cost.

Since its inception, YOLO has evolved significantly, with versions spanning from YOLOv1 to the most recent YOLOv11, each introducing pivotal innovations in feature extraction, bounding box prediction, and optimization techniques. These advancements, particularly in the backbone, neck, and head components, have positioned YOLO as a leading solution for real-time object detection across a variety of domains. In this review, we explore YOLO's diverse applications, including its critical role in medical imaging for COVID-19 detection, breast cancer identification, and tumor localization, where it has significantly enhanced diagnostic efficiency. YOLO's robust performance in autonomous vehicles is also highlighted, as it excels in challenging conditions like fog, rain, and low-light environments, thereby contributing to improved road safety and autonomous driving systems. In the agricultural sector, YOLO has transformed precision farming by enabling early detection of pests, diseases, and crop health issues, promoting more sustainable farming practices. Additionally, we provide an in-depth performance analysis of YOLO models—such as YOLOv9, YOLO-NAS, YOLOv10, and YOLOv11—across multiple benchmark datasets. This analysis compares their suitability for a range of applications, from lightweight embedded systems to high-resolution, complex object detection tasks. The combination of medical imaging and deep learning has significantly improved diagnostic and prognostic capabilities in the healthcare domain. Nevertheless, the inherent complexity of deep learning models poses challenges in understanding their decision-making processes. Interpretability and visualization techniques have emerged as crucial tools to unravel the black-box nature of these models, providing insights into their inner workings and enhancing trust in their predictions. This survey paper comprehensively examines various interpretation and visualization techniques applied to deep learning models in medical imaging. The paper reviews methodologies, discusses their applications, and evaluates their effectiveness in enhancing the interpretability, reliability, and clinical relevance of deep learning models in medical image analysis.

This review provides a systematic analysis of the literature data on the electrodeposition of composite coatings using plating baths based on a new generation of room-temperature ionic liquids, known as deep eutectic solvents (DESs). Such systems offer several advantages over traditionally used aqueous electrolytes and organic solvent-based electrolytes. The colloidal-chemical properties of suspension and colloidal electrolytes for composite deposition are thoroughly examined. New theories describing the kinetics of co-deposition of composite layers are characterized. The kinetics and mechanism of electrochemical deposition processes of composite coatings with metallic matrices are discussed. Case studies regarding the electrodeposition of composite coatings based on electrodeposited copper, silver, zinc, tin, nickel, cobalt, and chromium from DES-assisted electroplating baths are described and systematized. The main prospective directions for further research in the discussed scientific area are highlighted.

Lung and colon cancers are among the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Early and accurate detection of these cancers is crucial for effective treatment and improved patient outcomes. False or incorrect detection is more harmful. Accurately detecting cancer in a patient's tissue is crucial to their effective treatment. While analyzing tissue samples is complicated and time-consuming, deep learning techniques have made it possible to complete this process more efficiently and accurately. As a result, researchers can study more patients in a shorter amount of time and at a lower cost. Much research has been conducted to investigate deep learning models that require great computational ability and resources. However, None of these have had a 100% accurate detection rate for these life-threatening malignancies. Misclassified or falsely detecting cancer can have more harmful consequences. This research proposes a new lightweight, parameter-efficient, and mobile-embedded deep learning model based on a 1D convolutional neural network with Squeeze-and-Excitation layers for efficient lung and colon cancer detection. This proposed model diagnoses and classifies lung squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinoma of the lung and colon from digital pathology images. Extensive experiment demonstrates that our proposed model achieves 100% accuracy for detecting lung, colon, and lung and colon cancers from the histopathological (LC25000) lung and colon datasets, which is considered the best accuracy for around 0.35 million trainable parameters and around 6.4 million flops. Compared with the existing results, our proposed architecture shows state-of-the-art performance in lung, colon, and lung and colon cancer detection.

Sign language recognition technology can help people with hearing impairments to communicate with those who are hearing impaired. At present, with the rapid development of society, deep learning technology also provided certain technical support for sign language recognition work. In sign language recognition tasks, the use of traditional convolutional neural networks to extract spatio-temporal features from sign language videos suffers from insufficient feature extraction, resulting in low recognition rates. Nevertheless, video-based sign language datasets are very large and require a lot of computational resources for training and generalisation must be ensured, which poses a challenge for recognition. In this paper, we have presented a video-based sign language recognition method based on resnet and lstm. As the number of network layers increases, the ResNet network can effectively solve the granularity explosion problem and obtain better time series features. We use the Resnet convolutional network as the backbone model. At the initialisation stage, we obtain sign language features using ResNet; then, the learned feature space is used as the input of LSTM network to obtain long sequence features. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the above model is better than the mainstream model, and it can effectively extract the spatio-temporal features in sign language videos and improve the recognition rate of sign language actions.

Neurodegenerative illnesses, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), have a substantial impact on the overall well-being of those who are affected. This study investigates and contrasts the capabilities of convolutional neural networks (CNN) in detecting Parkinson’s disease (PD) by utilising hand-drawn images alongside wave and spiral images as input data. This study employs pre-trained CNN models, specifically MobileNet, ResNet50, EfficientNet-B1, and InceptionV3, to classify Parkinson’s disease (PD). The findings demonstrate that MobileNet surpasses other architectural designs, as evidenced by the F1-Score of the four classes: Spiral Normal (0.87), Spiral Parkinson (0.86), Wave Normal (0.97), and Wave Parkinson (0.97). MobileNet has also shown a remarkable accuracy of 0.92 in diagnosing Parkinson’s disease. The result demonstrates the efficacy of MobileNet in extracting features from images. The results of this study enhance the application of deep learning methods in the early detection of PD, as well as help indicate the effectiveness of patient therapy and exercise, promising better patient outcomes through timely intervention and treatment.

Abstract: Image aesthetic assessment (IAA) with neural attention has made significant progress due to its effectiveness in object recognition. Current studies have shown that the features learned by convolutional neural networks (CNN) at different learning stages indicate meaningful information. The shallow feature contains the low-level information of images and the deep feature perceives the image semantics and themes. Inspired by this, we propose a visual enhancement network with feature fusion (FF-VEN). It consists of two sub-modules, the visual enhancement module (VE module) and the shallow and deep feature fusion module (SDFF module). The former uses an adaptive filter in the spatial domain to simulate human eyes according to the region of interest (ROI) extracted by neural feedback. The latter not only takes out the shallow feature and the deep feature by transverse connection, but also uses a feature fusion unit (FFU) to fuse the pooled features together with the aim of information contribution maximization. Experiments on standard AVA dataset and Photo.net dataset show the effectiveness of FF-VEN.

Estimating plume cloud height is essential for various applications, such as global climate models. Smokestack plume rise is the constant height at which the plume cloud is carried downwind as its momentum dissipates and the plume cloud and the ambient temperatures equalize. Although different parameterizations are used in most air-quality models to predict the plume rise, they have been unable to estimate it properly. This paper proposes a novel framework to monitor smokestack plume clouds and make long-term, real-time measurements of the plume rise. For this purpose, a three-stage framework is developed based on Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs). In the first stage, an improved Mask R-CNN, called Deep Plume Rise Network (DPRNet), is applied to recognize the plume cloud. Then, image processing analysis and least squares theory are respectively used to detect the plume cloud’s boundaries and fit an asymptotic model into their centerlines. The y-component coordinate of this model’s critical point is considered the plume rise. In the last stage, a geometric transformation phase converts image measurements into real-life ones. A wide range of images with different atmospheric conditions, including day, night, and cloudy/foggy, have been selected for the DPRNet training algorithm. Obtained results show that the proposed method outperforms widely-used networks in smoke border detection and recognition.

In this paper, we propose a novel neural network for multi-type signal detection that can locate signals and recognize signal types in wideband spectrogram. Our network utilizes the key point estimation to locate the rough centerline of signal region and identify class. Then, several regressions are carried out to achieve properties, such as local offset and border offsets of bounding box, which is further synthesized for a more fine location. Experimental results demonstrate that our method performs more accurate than other DL-based object detection methods previously employed for the same detection task. Specifically, our method runs obviously faster than existing methods, and abandons the anchor generation, which makes it more favorable for real-time applications.

In the past years, various intelligent machine learning and deep learning algorithms have been developed and widely applied for gearbox fault detection and diagnosis. However, the real-time application of these intelligent algorithms has been limited, mainly due to the fact that the model developed using data from one machine or one operating condition has serious diagnosis performance degradation when applied to another machine or the same machine with a different operating condition. The reason for poor model generalization is the distribution discrepancy between the training and testing data. This paper proposes to address this issue using a deep learning based cross domain adaptation approach for gearbox fault diagnosis. Labelled data from training dataset and unlabeled data from testing dataset is used to achieve the cross-domain adaptation task. A deep convolutional neural network (CNN) is used as the main architecture. Maximum mean discrepancy is used as a measure to minimize the distribution distance between the labelled training data and unlabeled testing data. The study proposes to reduce the discrepancy between the two domains in multiple layers of the designed CNN to adapt the learned representations from the training data to be applied in the testing data. The proposed approach is evaluated using experimental data from a gearbox under significant speed variation and multiple health conditions. An appropriate benchmarking with both traditional machine learning methods and other domain adaptation methods demonstrates the superiority of the proposed method.

With the increase of the Artificial Neural Network (ANN), machine learning has taken a forceful twist in recent times. One of the most spectacular kinds of ANN design is the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a technology that mixes artificial neural networks and up to date deep learning strategies. In deep learning, Convolutional Neural Network is at the center of spectacular advances. This artificial neural network has been applied to several image recognition tasks for decades and attracted the eye of the researchers of the many countries in recent years as the CNN has shown promising performances in several computer vision and machine learning tasks. This paper describes the underlying architecture and various applications of Convolutional Neural Network.

To solve two key problems in the identification of people who are infected with COVID-19: the first problem is that the identification accuracy is not high enough. The second problem is that present identification method such as nucleic acid testing is expensive in many countries. Methods: So, I decided to design a fast identification method for COVID-19 patients which is based on deep learning. After the model (CoughNet) learns more than 6,000 cough spectrograms of both COVID-19 patients and normal people, the accuracy rate of identification of COVID-19 patients and normal people is higher than 99% in the test set. Structure: This paper is mainly divided into three parts: the first part introduces the main background and research status of the research; The second part introduces the research methods; The third part introduces the specific process of the experiment.

In the field of low power wireless networks, one of the techniques on which many researchers are putting their efforts is related to positioning methodologies such as fingerprinting in dense urban areas. This paper presents an experimental study aimed at quantifying the mean location estimation error in densely urbanized areas.Using a dataset made available by the University of Antwerp, a neural network was implemented with the aim of providing the position of the end-devices. In this way it was possible to measure the mean location estimation error in an area with high urban density. The results obtained show an accuracy in the localization of the end-device of less than 150 meters.This result would make it possible to use the fingerprint instead of alternative, energy consuming, methodologies such as GPS in IoT (Internet of Things) applications where battery life is the primary requirement to be met.

Urban scene point cloud pose significant challenges for registration due to its large data volume, similar scenarios and dynamic objects. In this paper, we propose PCRMLP, a model for urban scene point cloud registration that achieves comparable registration performance to prior learning-based methods. Compared to previous works which focus on extracting features and estimating correspondence, the model estimates the transformation implicitly from concrete instances. An instance-level urban scene representation method is introduced to extract instance descriptors via semantic segmentation and DBSCAN, which enable the model to obtain robust instance features, filter dynamic objects and estimate transformation in a more logical manner. Then a lightweight network consisting of MLPs is employed to obtain transformation in an encoder-decoder manner. We validate the approach on KITTI dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that PCRMLP can obtain a satisfactory coarse transformation from instance descriptors just in 0.0028s. With a subsequent ICP refinement module, the proposed method achieves higher registration accuracy and computational efficiency than prior learning-based works.

This paper presents an improved SOC estimation method for lithium ion batteries in Electric Vehicles using Bayesian optimized feedforward network. This innovative bayesian optimized neural network method attempts to minimize a scalar objective function by extracting hyperpa-rameters (hidden neurons in both layers) using a surrogate model. Furthemore, the hyperparameters are built and data samples are trained and validated. The performance of the proposed deep learning neural network is evaluated. Two reasonable size data samples are ex-tracted from Panasonic 18650PF Li-ion Mendeley datasets that are used for training and valida-tion. RNN and LSTM neural network algorithms offer the common core property of retaining past information and/or hidden states for better SOC estimation. However, the feature of this pro-posed method is the inclusion of Bayesian optimization that chooses optimal double layer hidden neurons. Analysis of results shows that Bayesian optimized feedforward algorithm with average MAPE (0.20%) is the lowest and is the best selection compared with average MAPE for other five deep learning algorithms. In the last quarter of fuel gauge, where fuel anxiety is severe, feed-forward with Bayesian Optimization algorithm is still the best selection (with MAPE of 0.64%).

This study presents the Bayesian-Optimized Attentive Neural Network (BOANN), a novel approach enhancing image classification performance by integrating Bayesian optimization with channel and spatial attention mechanisms. Traditional image classification struggles with the extensive data in today's big data era. Bayesian optimization has been integrated into neural networks in recent years to enhance model generalization, while channel and spatial attention mechanisms improve feature extraction capabilities. This paper introduces a model combining Bayesian optimization with these attention mechanisms to boost image classification performance. Bayesian optimization optimizes hyperparameter selection, accelerating model convergence and accuracy; the attention mechanisms augment feature extraction. Compared to traditional deep learning models, our model utilizes attention mechanisms for initial feature extraction, followed by a Bayesian-optimized neural network. On the CIFAR-100 dataset, our model outperforms classical models in metrics such as accuracy, loss, precision, recall, and F1 score, achieving an accuracy of 77.6%. These technologies have potential for broader application in image classification and other computer vision domains.

The root system plays an irreplaceable role in plant growth. Its improvement can increase crop productivity. However, such system is still mysterious for us. The underlying mechanism has not been fully uncovered. The investigation on proteins related to the root system is an important means to complete this task. In the previous time, lack of root-related proteins makes it impossible to adopt machine learning methods for designing efficient models for the discovery of novel root-related proteins. Recently, a public database on root-related proteins was set up and machine learning methods can be applied in this field. In this study, we proposed a machine learning based model, named Graph-Root, for identification of root-related proteins. The features derived from protein sequences and one network were extracted, where the former features were processed by graph convolutional neural network and multi-head attention, and the later features abstracted the linkage between proteins. These features were fed into the fully connected layer to make prediction. The 5-fold cross-validation and independent tests suggested its good performance. It also outperformed the only one previous model, SVM-Root. Furthermore, the importance of each feature type and component in the proposed model was investigated.

With the rapid developments that have been made in computer vision and computer technology, semantic segmentation of high-resolution images has emerged as a mainstream and challenging task. The, segmentation of water areas remains a complex task due to the similar features between water areas or between water areas and other land objects. Meanwhile, since coastlines and riverbanks are typically presented in irregular shapes, it is difficult to obtain the categories of pixels at boundaries. This paper proposed the use of a Water-Land Boundary Attention Network (WLBANet) to improve the accuracy of pixels at boundaries between water and land. This network also reinforced the performance of contextual information extraction into distinguishing between water areas and other land objects. To prove the validity of this proposed network, WLBANet was performed on the Water Land Dataset (WLD), which is also by this paper, and which contains water areas and other land objects categories. The results demonstrates that the proposed method has significant effectiveness.

Dementia, primarily caused by neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease (AD), affects millions worldwide, making detection and monitoring crucial. To enable these tasks, we propose encoding in-text pauses and filler words (i.e., “uh” and “um”) in text-based language models, and thoroughly evaluate their effect in performance. Additionally, we suggest using contrastive learning to improve performance in a multi-task framework. Our results demonstrated the effectiveness of our approaches in enhancing the model’s performance, achieving 87% accuracy and an 86% F1-score. Compared to the state-of-the-art, our approach has similar performance despite having significantly fewer parameters. This highlights the importance of pause and filler word encoding on the detection of dementia.

Hand gesture recognition has many valuable applications in engineering and health care. This study proposes a novel model which can accurately distinguish hand gestures using forearm muscles' surface electromyogram (sEMG) signals. A deep learning algorithm with hyper parameters impacting the final model’s accuracy and a convolutional neural network (CNN) were employed in the recognition stage. The number of convolutional layers, kernels per layer, and neurons in the dense layer were selected for optimization, while the remaining parameters, such as the learning rate, batch size, and number of epochs, were chosen based on trial and error and prior knowledge. The optimal values for the selected hyperparameters were obtained using a genetic algorithm to achieve maximum recognition accuracy. The UC2018 Dual-Myo database was used for training and testing the model based on EMG signals characterizing the activity of eight different hand gestures. The final structure of the model consisted of two convolutional layers with 131 and 28 kernels, a dense layer with 111 neurons, and a softmax layer with eight neurons. Upon optimizing the hyperparameters using the genetic algorithm, the accuracy of the proposed model increased from 91.86% to 96.4% at best and 95.3% on average in real-time applications and 99.6% in an offline mode. Future work is warranted towards improving the architecture and the computational cost.

This paper investigates the application of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) in solving the facility location decision problem. By adapting the learning objectives and structure of GNNs, this research bridges the gap between traditional optimization approaches and modern machine learning techniques. The proposed method demonstrates improved decision-making capabilities, providing promising results for facility location optimization. Additionally, potential future research directions are outlined, highlighting areas where GNNs can further enhance decision-making processes in complex supply chain networks. Hybrid GNN and Mixed Integer Programming solutions have been proposed.

Significant progress has made in pattern recognition technology. However, one obstacle that has not yet overcome is the recognition of words in the Brahmi script, specifically the identification of characters, compound characters, and word. This study proposes the use of the deep convolutional neural network with dropout to recognize the Brahmi words. This study also proposed a DCNN for Brahmi word recognition and a series of experiments are performed on standard Brahmi dataset. The practical operation of this method was systematically tested on accessible Brahmi image database, achieving 92.47% recognition rate by CNN with dropout respectively which is among the best while comparing with the ones reported in the literature for the same task.

Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) is a typical image sensor that has a wide range of applications. However, considering the limitations of the weather condition and hardware cost, it is hard to capture high-resolution images by CMOS sensor. Recently, Super-Resolution (SR) techniques for image restoration has been gaining attentions due to its excellent performance. Under the powerful learning ability, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have been proved to achieve great success. In this paper, we propose the Advanced Generative Adversarial Networks (AGAN) to efficiently correct these issues; 1) we design a Laplacian pyramid framework as pre-trained module, which is beneficial to provide multi-scale features for our input. 2) at each feature block, a convolutional skip-connections network, which may contain some latent information, is significant for generative model to reconstruct a plausible-looking image; 3) considering that edge details usually play an important role in image generation, a novel perceptual loss function is defined to train and seek optimal parameters. It is effective to achieve excellent and compelling quality captured by CMOS sensor. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations have been demonstrated that our algorithm not only fully takes advantage of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to improve the image quality, but also performs better than previous GAN algorithms for super-resolution task.

The application of deep learning convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for rock image characterization has become a prominent method in petroleum geology both nationally and internationally. Precise and automated segmentation of rock sheet images is essential for effective analytical studies. This research addresses the limitations of traditional image segmentation methods, which suffer from low accuracy and high costs in analyzing reservoir rock flakes. We propose an advanced model based on the U-Net architecture, incorporating both attention mechanisms and residual networks. The inclusion of residual modules enhances the network's depth, while the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) improves feature representation by adjusting the weighting of learned information. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that this approach delivers superior segmentation performance, marking a significant advancement in the field of reservoir rock image analysis.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important, especially in the medical field. While AI has been used in medicine for some time, its growth in the last decade has been remarkable. Specifically, Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) techniques in medicine have been increasingly adopted thanks to the growing abundance of health-related data, improved suitability of such techniques for managing large data-sets, and more computational power. The Italian scientific community has been instrumental in advancing this research area. This article aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the ML and DL methodologies and applications used in medicine by the Italian research community in the last five years.

As one of the critical state parameters of the battery management system, lithium battery state of charge (SOC) can provide an essential reference for battery safety management, charge/discharge control, and energy management of electric vehicles. To analyze the application of deep learning in electric vehicle power battery SOC estimation, this study reviewed the technical process, common public datasets, and the neural networks used, structural characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of lithium battery SOC estimation in deep learning method. First, the specific technical processes of the deep learning method for SOC estimation were analyzed, including data collection, data preprocessing, feature engineering, model training, and model evaluation. Secondly, the current commonly and publicly used lithium battery dataset was summarized. Then, the input variables, data sets, errors, and advantages and disadvantages of four types of deep learning methods, were concluded using the structure of neural network used for training as the classification criterion. Finally, the challenges and future development directions of lithium battery SOC estimation in deep learning method were explained.

Modelling both long and short-term user interests from historical data is crucial for accurate recommendations. However, unifying these metrics across multiple application domains can be challenging, and existing approaches often rely on complex, intertwined models which can be difficult to interpret. To address this issue, we propose a lightweight, plug-and-play interest enhancement module that fuses interest vectors from two independent models. After analyzing the dataset, we identify deviations in the recommendation performance of long and short-term interest models. To compensate for these differences, we use feature enhancement and loss correction during training. In the fusion process, we explicitly split long-term interest features with longer duration into multiple local features. We then use a shared attention mechanism to fuse multiple local features with short-term interest features to obtain interaction features. To correct for bias between models, we introduce a comparison learning task that monitors the similarity between local features, short-term features, and interaction features. This adaptively reduces the distance between similar features. Our proposed module combines and compares multiple independent long-term and short-term interest models on multiple domain datasets. As a result, it not only accelerates the convergence of the models but also achieves outstanding performance in challenging recommendation scenarios.

Vehicle re-identification research under surveillance cameras has yielded impressive results. However, the challenge of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based vehicle re-identification (ReID) presents a high degree of flexibility, mainly due to complicated shooting angles, occlusions, low discrimination of top-down features, and significant changes in vehicle scales. To address this, we propose a novel Dual Mixing Attention Network (DMANet) to extract discriminative features robust to variations in viewpoint. Specifically, we first present a plug-and-play Dual Mixing Attention Module (DMAM) to capture pixel-level pairwise relationships and channel dependencies, where DMAM is composed of Spatial Mixing Attention (SMA) and Channel Mixing Attention (CMA). First, the original feature is divided according to the dimensions of spatial and channel to obtain multiple subspaces. Then, a learnable weight is applied to capture the dependencies between local features in the mixture space. Finally, the features extracted from all subspaces are aggregated to promote their comprehensive feature interaction. Moreover, the DMAM can be readily inserted into backbone networks at any depth to improve vehicle discrimination. The experiments show that the proposed structure gains a better performance compared with the representative methods in the UAV-based vehicle ReID task. Our code and models will be publicly released.

One of the most common forms of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which leads to progressive mental deterioration. Unfortunately, there is no definitive diagnosis and cure that can stop the condition progressing. The diagnosis is often performed based on the clinical history and neuropsychological data, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Deep neural networks (DNN) algorithms are gaining popularity for medical diagnosis, and have been used widely for the analysis of MRI data. DNNs can extract hidden features from thousands of training images automatically. However, they cannot judge how confident they are about their predictions. To use DNNs in safety-critical applications such as medical diagnosis, uncertainty quantification of DNNs predictions is crucial. For this purpose, Monte Carlo dropout (MCD) has been widely used, however, it may lead to overconfident and miss calibrated results. This paper proposes a framework in which the MCD algorithm’s hyper-parameters are optimized during training using Bayesian optimization for the first time. The conducted optimization leads to assigning high predictive entropy to erroneous predictions and making it possible to recognize risky predictions. The proposed framework is used for AD diagnosis, which has not been done before. We compare our method with some existing methods in the literature based on different uncertainty quantification criteria. The results of comprehensive experiments on the Kaggle dataset using a deep model pre-trained on the ImageNet dataset show that the proposed algorithm can quantify uncertainty much better than the existing methods.

Micro-expression (ME) is one of the key psychological stress reactions. It is a modest, spontaneous facial mechanism. ME has significant applicability in a variety of psychologically-related sectors because to its precision and unpredictability with regard to psychological manifestations. Nevertheless, the current Micro-expression recognition (MER) algorithms have poor accuracy and a limited quantity of ME data, and this study issue has not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, we present an approach for deep learning based on a Spatio-temporal capsule network (STCP-Net). STCP-Net has four components: a jitter reduction module, a differential feature extraction module, an STCP module, and a fully linked layer. The first two modules are aimed to extract diversifying differential features more precisely and to limit the influence of head jitter. The STCP module is used to extract Spatio-temporal features layer by layer, taking the temporal and geographical connection between features into account. This research runs sufficient trials using the Leave One Subject Out (LOSO) methodology for cross-validation using the CASMEII dataset. The conclusion and analysis demonstrate that the algorithm is innovative and efficient.

Robot grasp modeling and implementation is one of essential abilities for a robot with embodied artificial intelligence. However, most existing deep learning-based grasp methods suffer a large number of parameters and heavy computation overheads. To address this issue, by fully exploiting the complementary capabilities of both CNNs and Transformers, we propose a smart grasp deep network with one-way fusion strategy via context path and spatial path (SGNet), which enjoys a lightweight structure, fast inference speed and easy deployment on devices with limited computation resources. Specifically, the context path employs lightweight depthwise separable convolution to achieve fast down-sampling while a novel DSFormer module mainly by integrating Transformer is to extract global and context-rich features. The spatial path efficiently fuses feature information from the context path in one-way manner and generate high-resolution feature maps via point-by-point convolution operations. Experimental results show the proposed model with only 1M parameters has a significantly overall performance, achieving 99.4% accuracy on Cornell dataset and 93.4% accuracy on Jacquard dataset, as well as within 12.5ms inference time.

In videos, the human's actions are of three-dimensional (3D) signals. These videos investigate the spatiotemporal knowledge of human behavior. The promising ability is investigated using 3D convolution neural networks (CNNs). The 3D CNNs have not yet achieved high output for their well-established two-dimensional (2D) equivalents in still photographs. Board 3D Convolutional Memory and Spatiotemporal fusion face training difficulty preventing 3D CNN from accomplishing remarkable evaluation. In this paper, we implement Hybrid Deep Learning Architecture that combines STIP and 3D CNN features to enhance the performance of 3D videos effectively. After implementation, the more detailed and deeper charting for training in each circle of space-time fusion. The training model further enhances the results after handling complicated evaluations of models. The video classification model is used in this implemented model. Intelligent 3D Network Protocol for Multimedia Data Classification using Deep Learning is introduced to further understand space-time association in human endeavors. In the implementation of the result, the well-known dataset, i.e., UCF101 to, evaluates the performance of the proposed hybrid technique. The results beat the proposed hybrid technique that substantially beats the initial 3D CNNs. The results are compared with state-of-the-art frameworks from literature for action recognition on UCF101 with an accuracy of 95%.

Recently deep cross-modal hashing networks have received increasing interests due to its superior query efficiency and low storage cost. However, most of existing methods concentrate less on hash representations learning part, which means the semantic information of data cannot be fully used. Furthermore, they may neglect the high-ranking relevance and consistency of hash codes. To solve these problems, we propose a Self-Attention and Adversary Guided Hashing Network (SAAGHN). Specifically, it employs self-attention mechanism in hash representations learning part to extract rich semantic relevance information. Meanwhile, in order to keep invariability of hash codes, adversarial learning is adopted in the hash codes learning part. In addition, to generate higher-ranking hash codes and avoid local minima early, a new batch semi-hard cosine triplet loss and a cosine quantization loss are proposed. Extensive experiments on two benchmark datasets have shown that SAAGHN outperforms other baselines and achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

Facial emotion detection is a challenging task that deals with emotion recognition. It has applications in various domains, such as behavior analysis, surveillance systems and human-computer interaction (HCI). Numerous studies have been implemented to detect emotions, including classical machine learning algorithms and advanced deep learning algorithms. For the machine learning algorithm, the hand-crafted feature needs to be extracted, which is a tiring task and requires human effort. Whereas in deep learning models, automated feature extraction is employed from samples. Therefore, in this study, we have proposed a novel and efficient deep learning model based on Neural Architecture Search Network utilizing superior artificial networks such as RNN and child networks. We performed the training utilizing the FER 2013 dataset comprising seven classes: happy, angry, neutral, sad, surprise, fear, and disgust. Furthermore, we analyzed the robustness of the proposed model on CK+ datasets and comparing with existing techniques. Due to the implication of reinforcement learning in the network, most representative features are extracted from the sample network. It extracts all key features without losing the key information. Our proposed model is based on one stage classifier and performs efficient classification. Our technique outperformed the existing models attaining an accuracy of 98.14%, recall of 97.57%, and precision of 97.84%.

With the continuous development of network technology, complex network systems generate massive unbalanced attack traffic. Due to the severe imbalance in the quantities of normal samples and attack samples, as well as among different types of attack samples, intrusion detection systems suffer from low detection rates for rare class attack data. In this paper, we propose a geometric synthetic minority oversampling technique based on optimized kernel density estimation algorithm. This method can generate diverse rare class attack data by learning the distribution of rare class attack data while maintaining similarity with the original sample features. Meanwhile, the balanced data is input to a feature extraction module built upon multiple denoising autoencoders, reducing information redundancy in high-dimensional data and improving the detection performance for unknown attacks. Subsequently, a soft voting ensemble learning technique is utilized for multi-class anomaly detection on the balanced and dimensionally reduced data. Finally, an intrusion detection system is constructed based on data preprocessing, imbalance handling, feature extraction, and anomaly detection modules, and validated on the NSL-KDD and N-BaIoT datasets. Comparative experiments with baseline models and other state-of-the-art methods demonstrate that the proposed system improves the detection rate of rare class attack data. Furthermore, it achieves a good overall detection rate on the Internet of Things dataset (N-BaIoT), indicating its strong applicability.

This paper is a review of the biological-inspired spiking neural network and its applications in different areas. The author aims to present a brief introduction to SNN, which incorporates the mathematical structure, applications, and implementation of SNN. This paper also represents an overview of machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning. This review paper can help advanced artificial intelligence researchers to get a compact brief intuition of spiking neural networks.

Accurate assessment of shale gas reserves hinges on a detailed characterization of gas and water distribution within shale reservoirs. Despite its importance, the nanoscale behavior of water and methane in deep shale formations, especially under elevated temperatures and pressures, remains poorly understood. This study proposes a novel molecular modeling approach to represent the complex nanocomposite porous media found in deep shale matrices. Leveraging quantitative data from experimental analyses of shale pore composition, we developed a molecular model that accurately reflects the intricate pore-slit structure within a composite of kerogen and illite, common constituents of shale. Employing a hybrid grand canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulation technique, we investigated the micro-scale distribution and preferential adsorption sites of water and methane within the shale matrix. Our research further elucidates the impact of water on the pore structure of shale and delineates the co-occurrence patterns of water and methane. The simulations reveal that water and methane share similar adsorption preferences on kerogen surfaces, while methane does not exhibit specific adsorption preferences on water-bearing illite. We also find that the presence of water significantly alters the illite pore space, leading to a reduction in larger pore volumes and a concomitant increase in smaller pores. The decrease in methane content with increasing water content is more pronounced in the shrinkage cracks compared to the kerogen matrix pores and is particularly notable in the macropores of illite. The findings underscore the differential sensitivity of methane content to water levels across various shale pore types. These insights contribute to a deeper theoretical understanding of gas and water distribution mechanisms in deep shale reservoirs, offering valuable support for the evaluation of deep shale gas resource potential.

Accurately mapping individual tree species in densely forested environments is crucial to forest inventory. When considering only RGB images, this is a challenging task for many automatic photogrammetry processes. The main reason for that is the spectral similarity between species in RGB scenes, which can be a hindrance for most automatic methods. State-of-the-art deep learning methods could be capable of identifying tree species with an attractive cost, accuracy, and computational load in RGB images. This paper presents a deep learning-based approach to detect an important multi-use species of palm trees (Mauritia flexuosa; i.e., Buriti) on aerial RGB imagery. In South-America, this palm tree is essential for many indigenous and local communities because of its characteristics. The species is also a valuable indicator of water resources, which comes as a benefit for mapping its location. The method is based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to identify and geolocate singular tree species in a high-complexity forest environment, and considers the likelihood of every pixel in the image to be recognized as a possible tree by implementing a confidence map feature extraction. This study compares the performance of the proposed method against state-of-the-art object detection networks. For this, images from a dataset composed of 1,394 airborne scenes, where 5,334 palm-trees were manually labeled, were used. The results returned a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.75 trees and an F1-measure of 86.9%. These results are better than both Faster R-CNN and RetinaNet considering equal experiment conditions. The proposed network provided fast solutions to detect the palm trees, with a delivered image detection of 0.073 seconds and a standard deviation of 0.002 using the GPU. In conclusion, the method presented is efficient to deal with a high-density forest scenario and can accurately map the location of single species like the M flexuosa palm tree and may be useful for future frameworks.

Oxygen extraction fraction (OEF), the fraction of oxygen that tissue extracts from blood, is an es-sential biomarker for directly assessing tissue viability and function in neurologic disorders. For quantitative mapping of OEF, an integrative model of quantitative susceptibility mapping and quantitative blood oxygen level-dependent magnitude (QSM+qBOLD or QQ) was recently pro-posed. However, QQ assumes Gaussian noise in both susceptibility and multi-echo gradient echo (mGRE) magnitude signals for OEF estimation. This assumption is unreliable in low sig-nal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions like disease-related lesions, risking inaccurate OEF estimation and potentially impacting clinical decisions. Addressing this, our study presents a novel multi-echo complex QQ (mcQQ) that models realistic noise in mGRE complex signals. The proposed mcQQ was implemented using a deep learning framework (mcQQ-NET) and compared with the existing deep learning-based QQ (QQ-NET) in simulations, ischemic stroke patients, and healthy subjects. Both mcQQ-NET and QQ-NET used identical training and testing datasets and schemes for a fair comparison. In simulations, mcQQ-NET provided more accurate OEF than QQ-NET. In the sub-acute stroke patients, mcQQ-NET showed a lower average OEF ratio in lesions relative to unaf-fected contralateral normal tissue than QQ-NET. In the healthy subjects, mcQQ-NET provided uniform OEF maps, similar to QQ-NET, but without unrealistically high OEF outliers in areas of low SNR. Therefore, mcQQ-NET improves OEF accuracy by better reflecting realistic data noise characteristics.

In recent years, Edge Intelligence (EI) has emerged, combining edge computing with AI, specifically deep learning, to run AI algorithms directly on edge devices. In practical applications, EI faces challenges related to computational power, power consumption, size, and cost, with the primary challenge being the trade-off between computational power and power consumption. This has rendered traditional computing platforms unsustainable, making heterogeneous parallel computing platforms a crucial pathway for implementing EI. In our research, we leveraged the Xilinx Zynq 7000 heterogeneous computing platform, employed High-Level Synthesis (HLS) for design, and implemented two different accelerators for LeNet-5 using loop unrolling and pipelining optimization techniques. The experimental results show that when running at a clock speed of 100 MHz, the PIPELINE accelerator, compared to the UNROLL accelerator, experiences an 8.09% increase in power consumption but speeds up by 14.972 times, making the PIPELINE accelerator superior in performance. Compared to the CPU, the PIPELINE accelerator reduces power consumption by 91.37% and speeds up by 70.387 times, while compared to the GPU, it reduces power consumption by 93.35%.This study provides two different optimization schemes for edge intelligence applications through design and experimentation, and demonstrates the impact of different quantization methods on FPGA resource consumption. These experimental results can provide a reference for practical applications, thereby providing a reference hardware acceleration scheme for edge intelligence applications.

Using machine learning or deep learning to solve the problem of garbage recognition and classification is an important application in computer vision, but due to the incomplete establishment of garbage datasets and the poor performance of complex network models on smart terminal devices, the existing garbage classification models The effect is not good.This paper presents a waste classification and identification method base on transfer learning and lightweight neural network. By migrating the lightweight neural network MobileNetV2 and rebuild it, The reconstructed network is used for feature extraction, and the extracted features are introduced into the SVM to realize the identification of 6 types of garbage. The model was trained and verified by using 2527 pieces of garbage labeled data in the TrashNet dataset, which ultimately resulted in a classification accuracy of 98.4% of the method, which proves that the method can effectively improve the classification accuracy and time and overcome the problem of weak data and less labeling. The over-fitting phenomenon encountered by small data sets in deep learning makes the model robust.

A continuous Deep Belief Network (cDBN) with two hidden layers is proposed in this paper, focusing on the problem of weak feature learning ability when dealing with continuous data. In cDBN, the input data is trained in an unsupervised way by using continuous version of transfer functions, the contrastive divergence is designed in hidden layer training process to raise convergence speed, an improved dropout strategy is then implemented in unsupervised training to realize features learning by de-cooperating between the units, and then the network is fine-tuned using back propagation algorithm. Besides, hyper-parameters are analysed through stability analysis to assure the network can find the optimal. Finally, the experiments on Lorenz chaos series, CATS benchmark and other real world like CO2 and waste water parameters forecasting show that cDBN has the advantage of higher accuracy, simpler structure and faster convergence speed than other methods.

Emotion detection holds significant importance in facilitating human-computer interaction, enhancing the depth of engagement. By integrating this capability, we pave the way for forthcoming AI technologies to possess a blend of cognitive and emotional understanding, bridging the divide between machine functionality and human emotional complexity. This progress has the potential to reshape how machines perceive and respond to human emotions, ushering in an era of empathetic and intuitive artificial systems. This paper introduces a novel approach to multimodal emotion recognition, seamlessly integrating speech and text modalities to accurately infer emotional states. Employing CNNs, we meticulously analyze speech using Mel spectrograms, while a BERT-based model processes the textual component, leveraging its bidirectional layers for profound semantic comprehension. The outputs from both modalities are combined using an attention-based fusion mechanism that optimally weighs their contributions. The proposed method undergoes meticulous testing on two distinct datasets: Carnegie Mellon University’s Multimodal Opinion Sentiment and Emotion Intensity (CMU-MOSEI) dataset and the Multimodal Emotion Lines Dataset (MELD). The results demonstrate superior efficacy compared to existing frameworks, achieving an accuracy of 88.4% and an F1-score of 87.9% on the CMU-MOSEI dataset, and a notable weighted accuracy (WA) of 67.81% and a weighted F1 (WF1) score of 66.32% on the MELD dataset. This comprehensive system offers precise emotion detection and introduces several significant advancements in the field.

The research of object classification and part segmentation is a hot topic in computer vision. A considerable number of studies have been carried out about deep learning on 3D point clouds. However,it is challenging to achieve effective feature learning due to sparsity of point clouds. Recently, a variety of Transformers have been adopted to improve point cloud processing and display great potential. Nevertheless, large numbers of Transformer layers tend to incur huge computational and memory costs. PointNet++ is one of the most influential neural architectures for point cloud understanding. Although the accuracy of PointNet++ has been largely surpassed by recent networks, this does not mean that PointNet++ has no potential.Thus, this paper offer two major contributions that significantly improve PointNet++ performance. Firstly, we introduce a novel contextual feature extraction (CFE) block that significantly enhances the feature extraction capabilities of PointNet++ networks. Secondly, to further enhance feature fusion, we seamlessly integrate a mutual learning (ML) block into the network architecture. By embedding these two innovative blocks within each layer of the network, we not only enrich the network's functionality but also impart it with greater robustness and adaptability. The specific experiments were conducted on the S3DIS (6-fold cross-validation) and Modelnet40 datasets with 86.5% and 92.7% accuracy, respectively, which proved that our model is comparable or even better than most existing methods for classification and segmentation tasks.

Online transactions are becoming more popular in present situation where the globe is facing an unknown disease COVID-19. Now authorities of Countries requested peoples to use cashless transaction as far as possible. Practically it is not always possible to use it in all transactions. Since number of such cashless transactions have been increasing during lockdown period due to COVID-19, fraudulent transactions are also increasing in a rapid way. Fraud can be analysed by viewing a series of customer transactions data that was done in his/her previous transactions. Normally banks or other transaction authorities warned their customers about the transaction If any deviation is noticed by them from available patterns. These authorities think that it is possibly of fraudulent transaction. For detection of fraud during COVID-19, banks and credit card companies are applying various methods such as data mining , decision tree, rule based mining, neural network, fuzzy clustering approach and machine learning methods. These approaches is try to find out normal usage pattern of customers based on their past activities. The objective of this paper is to find out such fraud transactions during such unmanageable situation.Digital payment schemes are often threatened by fraudulent activities. Detecting fraud transaction in during money transfer may save customers from financial loss. Mobile based money transactions are focused in this paper for fraud detection. A Deep Learning (DL) framework is suggested in this paper that monitors and detects fraudulent activities. Implementing and applying recurrent neural network on PaySim generated synthetic financial dataset, deceptive transactions are identified. The proposed method is capable to detect deceptive transactions with an accuracy of 99.87%, F1-Score of 0.99 and MSE of 0.01.

The recent rise of deep learning (DL) and its promising capabilities in capturing non-explicit detail from large datasets have attracted substantial research attention in the field of medical image processing. DL provides ground for technology development for computer-aided diagnosis and segmentation in radiology and radiation oncology. Amongst the anatomical locations where recent auto-segmentation algorithms have been employed, the pelvis remains one of the most challenging due to large intra- and inter-patient soft-tissue variabilities. This review provides a comprehensive and clinically-oriented overview of DL-based segmentation studies for bladder, prostate, cervical and rectal cancers, highlighting the key findings, challenges and limitations.

Hyperspectral images (HSI) contain abundant spectral information. Efficient extraction and utilization of this information for image classification remain prominent research topics. Previously, hyperspectral classification techniques primarily relied on statistical attributes and mathematical models of spectral data. Deep learning classification techniques have recently been extensively utilized for hyperspectral data classification, yielding promising outcomes. This study proposes a deep learning approach that uses polarization feature maps for classification. Initially, the polar coordinate transformation method is employed to convert the spectral information of all pixels in the image into spectral feature maps. Subsequently, the proposed Deep Context Feature Fusion Network (DCFF-NET) is utilized to classify these feature maps. The model is validated using three open-source hyperspectral datasets: Indian Pines, Pavia University, and Salinas. The experimental results indicated that DCFF-NET achieves excellent classification performance. Experimental results on three public HSI datasets demonstrate that the proposed method accurately recognizes different objects with an overall accuracy (OA) of 86.68%, 94.73%, and 95.14% based on the pixel method, and 98.15%, 99.86%, and 99.98% based on the pixel-patch method.

An application of deep convolutional neural network and recurrence plot for financial market movement prediction is presented. Though it is challenging and subjective to interpret its information, the pattern formed by a recurrence plot provide a useful insight into the dy- namical system. We used a recurrence plot of seven financial time series to train a deep neural network for financial market movement predic- tion. Our approach is tested on our dataset and achieved an average of 53.25% classification accuracy. The result suggests that a well trained deep convolutional neural network can learn a recurrence plot and pre- dict a financial market direction.

3D object detection is crucial for autonomous driving to understand the driving environment. Since the pooling operation causes information loss in the standard CNN, we have designed a wavelet multiresolution analysis-based 3D object detection network without a pooling operation. Additionally, instead of using a single filter like the standard convolution, we use the lower-frequency and higher-frequency coefficients as a filter. These filters capture more relevant parts than a single filter, enlarging the receptive field. The model comprises a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and an inverse wavelet transform (IWT) with skip connections to encourage feature reuse for contrasting and expanding layers. The IWT enriches the feature representation by fully recovering the lost details during the downsampling operation. Element-wise summation is used for the skip connections to decrease the computational burden. We train the model for the Haar and Daubechies (Db4) wavelets. The two-level wavelet decomposition result shows that we can build a lightweight model without losing significant performance. The experimental results on the KITTI’s BEV and 3D evaluation benchmark show our model outperforms the Pointpillars base model by up to 14 \% while reducing the number of trainable parameters. Code will be released.

Background: The skin prick test (SPT) is used to diagnose sensitization to antigens. This study proposes a deep learning approach to infer wheal dimensions, aiming to reduce dependence on human interpretation. Methods: A dataset of SPT images (n=5844) was used to infer a convolutional neural network for wheal segmentation (ML model). Three methods for inferring wheal dimensions were evaluated: the ML model; the standard protocol (MA1); and approximation of the area as an ellipse using diameters measured by an allergist (MA2). The results were compared with assisted image segmentation (AIS), the most accurate method. Bland-Altman, distribution analyses, and correlation tests were applied to compare the methods. The study also compared the percentage deviation among these methods in determining the area of wheals with regular geometric shapes (n = 150) and with irregular shapes (n=150). Results: The Bland-Altman analysis showed that the difference between methods was not correlated with the absolute area. The ML model achieved a segmentation accuracy of 85.88% and a strong correlation with the AIS method (ρ=0.88), outperforming all other methods. Additionally, MA1 showed significant error (13.44±13.95%) for pseudopods. Conclusions: The ML protocol can potentially automate the reading of SPT, offering greater accuracy than the standard protocol.

This work aims to contribute to better understanding the use of public street spaces. (1) Background: In this sense, with a multidisciplinary approach, the objective of this work is to propose an experimental and reproducible method on a large scale. (2) Study area: The applied methodology uses artificial intelligence to analyze Google Street View (GSV) images at street level. (3) Method: The purpose is to validate a methodology that allows to characterize and quantify the use (pedestrians and cars) of some squares in Rome belonging to different historical periods. (4) Results: Through the use of machine vision techniques, typical of artificial intelligence and which use convolutional neural networks, a historical reading of some selected squares is proposed with the aim of interpreting the dynamics of use and identifying some critical issues in progress. (5) Conclusions: This work validated the usefulness of a method applied to the use of artificial intelligence for the analysis of GSV images at street level.

Intelligent systems are transforming the world, as well as our healthcare system. We propose a deep learning-based cough sound classification model that can distinguish between children with healthy versus pathological coughs such as asthma, upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), and lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI). In order to train a deep neural network model, we collected a new dataset of cough sounds, labelled with clinician's diagnosis. The chosen model is a bidirectional long-short term memory network (BiLSTM) based on Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) features. The resulting trained model when trained for classifying two classes of coughs -- healthy or pathology (in general or belonging to a specific respiratory pathology), reaches accuracy exceeding 84\% when classifying cough to the label provided by the physicians' diagnosis. In order to classify subject's respiratory pathology condition, results of multiple cough epochs per subject were combined. The resulting prediction accuracy exceeds 91\% for all three respiratory pathologies. However, when the model is trained to classify and discriminate among the four classes of coughs, overall accuracy dropped: one class of pathological coughs are often misclassified as other. However, if one consider the healthy cough classified as healthy and pathological cough classified to have some kind of pathologies, then the overall accuracy of four class model is above 84\%. A longitudinal study of MFCC feature space when comparing pathologicial and recovered coughs collected from the same subjects revealed the fact that pathological cough irrespective of the underlying conditions occupy the same feature space making it harder to differentiate only using MFCC features.

In the field of maneuvering target tracking, the combined observations of azimuth and Doppler may cause weak observation or non-observation in the application of traditional target tracking algorithms. Additionally, traditional target-tracking algorithms require pre-defined multiple mathematical models to accurately capture the complex motion states of targets, while model mismatch and unavoidable measurement noise lead to significant errors in target state prediction. To address those above challenges, in recent years, the target-tracking algorithms based on neural networks, such as recurrent neural networks (RNNs), long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, and Transformer architectures, have been widely used for their unique advantages to achieve accurate predictions. To better model the nonlinear relationship between the observation time series and the target state time series, as well as the contextual relationship among time series points, we present a deep learning algorithm called recursive downsample-convolve-interact neural network (RDCINN) based on convolutional neural network (CNN) that downsamples time series into sub-sequences and extracts multi-resolution features to enable the modeling of complex relationships between time series, which overcomes the shortcomings of traditional target-tracking algorithms in using observation information inefficiently due to weak observation or non-observation. The experimental results show that our algorithm outperforms other existing algorithms in the scenario of strong maneuvering target tracking with the combined observations of azimuth and Doppler.

Automating pruning tasks entails overcoming several challenges, encompassing not only robotic manipulation but also environment perception and detection. To achieve efficient pruning, robotic systems must accurately identify the correct cutting points. A possible method to define these points is to choose the cutting location based on the number of nodes present on the targeted cane. For this purpose, in grapevine pruning, it is required to correctly identify the nodes present on the primary canes of the grapevines. In this paper, a novel method of node detection in grapevines is proposed with four distinct state-of-the-art versions of the YOLO detection model: YOLOv7, YOLOv8, YOLOv9 and YOLOv10. These models were trained on a public dataset with images containing artificial backgrounds and afterwards validated on different cultivars of grapevines from two distinct Portuguese viticulture regions with cluttered backgrounds. This allowed to evaluate the robustness of the algorithms on the detection of nodes in diverse environments, compare the performance of the YOLO models used, as well as create a publicly available dataset of grapevines obtained in Portuguese vineyards for node detection. Overall, all used models were capable of achieving correct node detection on images of grapevines from the three distinct datasets. Considering the trade-off between accuracy and inference speed, the YOLOv7 model demonstrated to be the most robust in detecting nodes in 2D images of grapevines, achieving F1-Score values between 70 % and 86.5 % with inference times of around 89 ms for an input size of 1280×1280 px. Considering these results, this work contributes with an efficient approach for real-time node detection for further implementation on an autonomous robotic pruning system.

Rice has become the second major food among rural people. It is one of the most nutrient and low-cost food available in Asia. Rice is composed of two major subspecies as Japonica and Indica and it belongs to the Poaceae family. The World Bank predicts that rice demand will grow 51% faster than population growth in 2025. It is high time to develop a model which predicts the type of infected paddy leaf and avoids the loss of grains. In this paper, the proposed hybrid CNN model, three CNN networks with different layer properties are trained parallel. The extracted feature from these CNN networks is combined to provide the classification of the type of infected leaf. Fieldwork was carried and about 340 samples are collected from five different types of classes. The proposed hybrid model was tested with both the fieldwork dataset and also with an available dataset on the internet. The experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms the other CNN network and yields an accuracy value of 98%, a precision value of 95%, and a misclassification rate of 4% respectively.

Accurately predicting drug-drug interactions (DDIs) is crucial for preventing adverse drug events in clinical settings. However, existing methodologies often rely on complex models built from diverse data sources, posing challenges in computational drug discovery. To address the need for precise computational methods in predicting unknown DDIs, this study introduces a novel Deep Neural Network (DNN)-based approach. By leveraging a wide range of drug-related information, including substructure, targets, side effects, pathways, and indications, our method calculates multiple drug similarities. These similarities are then synthesized using a nonlinear fusion method to extract high-level features. Subsequently, a tailored neural network is deployed for interaction prediction. Comparative evaluation against three prominent machine learning classifiers—Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Adaptive Gradient Boosting (AdaBoost), and Light Gradient-Boosting Machine (LGBM)—using three benchmark datasets demonstrates the superior performance of DNN. It achieves outstanding accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics, all reaching 94.6% in cross-validation. Additionally, case studies involving numerous drug pairs confirm the reliability of DNN in accurately predicting unknown DDIs. These findings underscore DNN as a potent and reliable method for DDI prediction, with promising implications for drug discovery and healthcare applications.

Infrared and visible image fusion technologies are used to characterize the same scene by diverse modalities. However, most existing deep learning-based fusion methods are designed as symmetric networks, which ignore the differences between modal images and lead to the source image information loss during feature extraction. In this paper, we propose a new fusion framework for the different characteristics of infrared and visible images. Specifically, we design a dual-stream asymmetric network with two different feature extraction networks to extract infrared and visible feature maps respectively. The transformer architecture is introduced in the infrared feature extraction branch, which can force the network to focus on the local features of infrared images while still obtaining their contextual information. And the visible feature extraction branch uses residual dense blocks to fully extract the rich background and texture detail information of visible images. In this way, it can provide better infrared targets and visible details for the fused image. Experimental results on multiple datasets indicate that DSA-Net outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both qualitative and quantitative evaluations. In addition, we also apply the fusion results to the target detection task, which indirectly demonstrates the fusion performances of our method.

Deep learning has achieved lots of successes in many fields, but when trainable sample are extremely limited, deep learning often under or overfitting to few samples. Meta-learning was proposed to solve difficulties in few-shot learning and fast adaptive areas. Meta-learner learns to remember some common knowledge by training on large scale tasks sampled from a certain data distribution to equip generalization when facing unseen new tasks. Due to the limitation of samples, most approaches only use shallow neural network to avoid overfitting and reduce the difficulty of training process, that causes the waste of many extra information when adapting to unseen tasks. Euclidean space-based gradient descent also make meta-learner's update inaccurate. These issues cause many meta-learning model hard to extract feature from samples and update network parameters. In this paper, we propose a novel method by using multi-stage joint training approach to post the bottleneck during adapting process. To accelerate adapt procedure, we also constraint network to Stiefel manifold, thus meta-learner could perform more stable gradient descent in limited steps. Experiment on mini-ImageNet shows that our method reaches better accuracy under 5-way 1-shot and 5-way 5-shot conditions.

Automated skin lesion analysis is one of the trending fields that has gained attention among the dermatologists and healthcare practitioners. Skin lesion restoration is an essential preprocessing step for lesion enhancements for accurate automated analysis and diagnosis. Digital hair removal is a non-invasive method for image enhancement by solving the hair-occlusion artefact in previously captured images. Several hair removal methods were proposed for skin delineation and removal. However, manual annotation is one of the main challenges that hinder the validation of these proposed methods on a large number of images or using benchmarking datasets for comparison purposes. In the presented work, we propose a realistic hair simulator based on context-aware image synthesis using image-to-image translation techniques via conditional adversarial generative networks for generation of different hair occlusions in skin images, along with the ground-truth mask for hair location. Besides, we explored using three loss functions including L1-norm, L2-norm and structural similarity index (SSIM) to maximise the synthesis quality. For quantitatively evaluate the realism of image synthesis, the t-SNE feature mapping and Bland-Altman test are employed as objective metrics. Experimental results show the superior performance of our proposed method compared to previous methods for hair synthesis with plausible colours and preserving the integrity of the lesion texture.

A common spinal condition, spondylolisthesis is the presence of a relative back or forth displacement between the upper and lower vertebra due to one vertebra being oriented away from the smooth curvature of a normal spine. Aging-related illnesses such as degenerative spondylolisthesis are especially burdensome on social welfare and health-care systems in an aging society, especially radiologists and clinical physicians. Therefore, we proposed a computer aided diagnosis algorithm, named LumbarNet, for vertebral slippage detection on clinical X-ray images. Collaborating with i) a P-grade, ii) a piecewise slope detection scheme, and iii) a dynamic shift detection routine, LumbarNet was thus specialized for analyzing complex structural patterns in lumbar spine X-ray images and outcompeted other U-Net based methods. Extensive experiments on lumbar spine X-ray images in standard clinical practices showed that LumbarNet achieved a mean intersection over union value of 0.88 in vertebral region detection and an accuracy of 88.83% in vertebral slippage detection.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) disease is extensively distributed worldwide. This disease damages grain quality and reduces yield. The detection of this disease in a high throughput way is crucial to planters and breeders. Our study focused on developing a method for processing wheat color images and accurately detecting disease areas using deep learning and image processing techniques. The color images of wheat at the milky stage were collected and processed to construct datasets, which were used to retrain a deep convolutional neural network model using transfer learning. Testing results showed that the model can detect spikes, and the coefficient of determination of the number of spikes between the manual count and the detection was 0.80. The model was assessed, and the mean average precision for the testing dataset was 0.9201. On the basis of the results of spike detection, a new color feature was applied to obtain the gray image of each spike. Then, a modified region growing algorithm was implemented to segment and detect the diseased areas of each spike. Results show that the region growing algorithm performs better than K-means and Otsu’s method in segmenting the FHB disease. Overall, this study demonstrates that deep learning techniques enable the accurate detection of FHB in wheat using color images, and the proposed method can effectively detect spikes and diseased areas, thereby improving the efficiency of FHB detection.

The task of human action recognition (HAR) based on skeleton data is a challenging yet crucial technique owing to its wide-ranging applications in numerous domains, including patient monitoring, security surveillance, and observation of human-machine interactions. While numerous algorithms have been proposed in an attempt to distinguish between a myriad of activities, most practical applications necessitate highly accurate detection of specific activity types. This study proposes a novel and highly accurate spatiotemporal graph autoencoder network for HAR based on skeleton data. Furthermore, an extensive investigation was conducted employing diverse modalities. To this end, a spatiotemporal graph autoencoder was constructed to automatically learn both spatial and temporal patterns from human skeleton datasets. The powerful graph convolutional network, designated as GA-GCN, developed in this study, notably outperforms the majority of existing state-of-the-art methods when evaluated on two common datasets, namely NTU RGB+D and NTU RGB+D 120. On the first dataset, the proposed approach achieved accuracies of 92.3\% and 96.8\% for the cross-subject and cross-view evaluations, respectively. On the more challenging NTU RGB+D 120 dataset, GA-GCN attained accuracies of 88.8\% and 90.4\% for the cross-subject and cross-set evaluations, respectively.

Remote sensing technology is crucial for accurate rooftop detection, benefiting urban planning, disaster management, and solar resource estimation. This study employs Efficient Interactive Segmentation (EISEG) to enhance the efficiency of remote sensing image labeling, with a particular focus on rooftop detection. It is necessary to use modern technology because traditional manual labelling methods are labor-intensive and complicated. The study introduces a novel framework on deep learning semantic segmentation models, facilitating an efficient approach to rooftop identification using high-resolution UAV remote sensing datasets. Large dataset of labeled UAV rooftop building images, in which each superpixel region is assigned a binary label indicating rooftop presence. Advanced methods including Asymmetric Neural Network (ANN), Dual At-tention Network (DANet), PP-LiteSeg, and Deeplab3 are implemented for automatic rooftop detection due to their higher performance and advanced architectures. These models are executed on the Baidu deep learning platform PaddlePaddle, generating initial rooftop segmentation maps crucial for estimating photovoltaic resources. The ANN model emerges with the highest accuracy at 96%, followed by DANet at 95.09%, PP-LiteSeg at 94.54%, and Deeplab3 at 81.61%. The outcomes presenting efficient models for automated rooftop identification, and demonstrating the continuous need for improving deep learning techniques in smart and sustainable cities.

Target recognition mainly includes three approaches: optical image-based, echo detection-based, and passive signal analysis-based methods. Among them, the passive signal-based method is closely integrated with practical applications due to its strong environmental adaptability. Based on passive radar signal analysis, we design an "end-to-end" model that cascades a noise estimation network with a recognition network to identify working modes in noise environment. The noise estimation network is implemented based on U-Net, which adopts a method of feature extraction and reconstruction to adaptively estimate the noise mapping level of the sample, which can help the recognition network to reduce noise interference. Focusing on the characteristics of radar signal, the recognition network is realized based on Multi-Scale Convolutional Attention Network (MSCANet). Firstly, the deep group convolution is used to isolate the channel interaction in the shallow network. Then, through the multi-scale convolution module, finer-grained features of the signal are extracted without increasing the complexity of the model. Finally, the self-attention mechanism is used to suppress the influence of low-correlation and negative-correlation channels and spaces. This method overcomes the problem that the conventional method is seriously disturbed by noise. We validated the proposed method in 81 kinds of noise environments, achieving an average accuracy of 94.65%. Additionally, we discussed the performance of six machine learning algorithms and four deep learning algorithms. Compared to these methods, proposed MSCANet achieved an accuracy improvement of approximately 17%. Our method demonstrates better generalization and robustness.

The precise determination of the State-of-Health (SOH) of lithium-ion batteries is critical in the domain of battery management systems. The proposed model in this research paper emulates any deep learning or machine learning model by utilizing a Look Up Table (LUT) memory to store all activation inputs and their corresponding outputs. The operation that follows the completion of training is referred to as the LUT memory preparation procedure. The lookup operation performed on this method simply substitutes for the inference process. This is achieved by discretizing the input data and features before binarizing them. The term for the aforementioned operation is the LUT inference method. The procedure was evaluated in this study using two distinct neural network architectures: a bidirectional long short-term memory (LSTM) architecture and a standard fully connected neural network (FCNN). It is anticipated that considerably greater efficiency and velocity will be achieved during the inference procedure when the pre-trained deep neural network architecture is inferred directly. The principal aim of this research is to construct a lookup table that effectively establishes correlations between the SOH of lithium-ion batteries and ensures a degree of imprecision that is tolerable. According to the results obtained from the NASA PCoE lithium-ion battery dataset, the proposed methodology exhibits performance that is largely comparable to that of the initial machine learning models. Utilising the error assessment metrics RMSE, MAE, and (MAPE), the accuracy of SOH prediction has been quantitatively evaluated. The indicators mentioned above demonstrate a significant degree of accuracy when predicting SOH.

The number of connected IoT devices is increasing significantly due to their many benefits, including automation, improved efficiency and quality of life, and waste reducing. However, these devices have several vulnerabilities that have led to the rapid growth in the number of attacks. Therefore, several machine learning-based Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) tools have been developed to detect intrusions and suspicious activity to and from a host (HIDS - Host IDS) or, in general, within the traffic of a network (NIDS - Network IDS). The proposed work performs a comparative analysis and an ablative study among recent machine learning-based NIDS to develop a benchmark of the different proposed strategies. The proposed work compares both shallow learning algorithms, such as Decision Trees, Random Forest, Naïve Bayes, Logistic Regression, XGBoost, and Support Vector Machine, and deep learning algorithms, such as DNN, CNN, and LSTM, whose approach is relatively new in the literature. The algorithms are evaluated on the KDD-99, NSL-KDD, UNSW-NB15, and IoT-23 datasets. The results show that the NIDS tools based on deep learning approaches achieve better performance in detecting network anomalies than shallow learning approaches.

ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is an advanced large language model (LLM) that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning to generate human-like responses. This paper explores its applications in digital health and healthcare, focusing on enhancing patient engagement through medical history collection, symptom assessment, and decision support to improve diagnostic accuracy. We also examine its role in promoting health literacy and clinical decision-making across various organ systems. Despite its advantages, the integration of ChatGPT in healthcare poses limitations and risks, including the potential for inaccurate information, overreliance by users, and ethical concerns related to informed consent. We discuss the challenges of keeping pace with rapidly evolving medical knowledge and highlight the need for continuous updates. Additionally, the paper addresses intellectual property and regulatory issues associated with AI deployment in medicine. Through this analysis, we provide insights into the benefits and potential risks of employing ChatGPT in healthcare.

Early detection of wildfires has been limited using the sun-synchronous orbit satellites due to their low temporal resolution and wildfires’ fast spread in the early stage. NOAA’s geostationary weather satellites GOES-R can acquire images every 15 minutes at 2km spatial resolution, and have been used for early fire detection. However, advanced processing algorithms are needed to provide timely and reliable detection of wildfires. In this research, a deep learning framework, based on Gated Recurrent Units (GRU), is proposed to detect wildfires at early stage using GOES-R dense time series data. GRU model maintains good performance on temporal modelling while keep a simple architecture, makes it suitable to efficiently process time-series data. 36 different wildfires in North and South America under the coverage of GOES-R satellites are selected to assess the effectiveness of the GRU method. The detection times based on GOES-R are compared with VIIRS active fire products at 375m resolution in NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS). The results show that GRU-based GOES-R detections of the wildfires are earlier than that of the VIIRS active fire products in most of the study areas. Also, results from proposed method offer more precise location on the active fire at early stage than GOES-R Active Fire Product in mid-latitude and low-latitude regions.

With the advancement of photoelectric technology and computer image processing technology, the visual measurement method based on point clouds is gradually applied to the 3D measurement of large workpieces. Point cloud registration is a key step in 3D measurement, and its registration accuracy directly affects the accuracy of 3D measurements. In this study, we designed a novel MPCR-Net for multiple partial point cloud registration networks. First, an ideal point cloud was extracted from the CAD model of the workpiece and was used as the global template. Next, a deep neural network was used to search for the corresponding point groups between each partial point cloud and the global template point cloud. Then, the rigid body transformation matrix was learned according to these correspondence point groups to realize the registration of each partial point cloud. Finally, the iterative closest point algorithm was used to optimize the registration results to obtain a final point cloud model of the workpiece. We conducted point cloud registration experiments on untrained models and actual workpieces, and by comparing them with existing point cloud registration methods, we verified that the MPCR-Net could improve the accuracy and robustness of the 3D point cloud registration.

The use of visual signals in horticulture has attracted significant attention and encompassed a wide range of data types such as 2D images, videos, hyperspectral images, and 3D point clouds. These visual signals have proven to be valuable in developing cutting-edge computer vision systems for various applications in horticulture, enabling plant growth monitoring, pest and disease detection, quality and yield estimation, and automated harvesting. However, unlike other sectors, developing deep learning computer vision systems for horticulture encounters unique challenges due to the limited availability of high-quality training and evaluation datasets necessary for deep learning models. This paper investigates the current status of vision systems and available data in order to identify the high-quality data requirements specific to horticultural applications. We analyse the impact of the quality of visual signals on the information content and features that can be extracted from these signals. To address the identified data quality requirements, we explore the usage of a deep learning-based super-resolution model for generative quality enhancement of visual signals. Furthermore, we discuss how these can be applied to meet the growing requirements around data quality for learning-based vision systems. We also present a detailed analysis of the competitive quality generated by the proposed solution compared to cost-intensive hardware-based alternatives. This work aims to guide the development of efficient computer vision models in horticulture by overcoming existing data challenges and paving a pathway forward for contemporary data acquisition.

The study of Internet of Vehicle (IoV) based on Fog Computing (FC) and Artificial Intelligent (AI) has attracted more and more attention. However, there are still many problems require to investigate such as time-critical, scalability, load-balancing, energy consumption, and so on. Focusing on these problems, we proposed an AI-based Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) model for tasks and resource offloading model for IoVs network, which ensures reliable low-latency communication efficient tasks offloading in IoV network by using Software Defined Vehicular based FC (SDV-F) architecture. To fit to time-critical data transmission task distribution, the proposed model reduces unnecessary task allocation at the fog computing layer by proposing an AI-based task-allocation algorithm in IoV layer to implement task allocation of each vehicle. By applying AI technologies of Reinforcement Learning (RL), Markov decision process, and Deep Learning (DL), the proposed model intelligently makes decision on maximizing resource utilization at the fog layer, and minimizing the average end-to-end delay of time-critical IoV applications. The experiment demonstrates the proposed model can efficiently distribute the fog layer tasks while minimizing the delay.

Photogrammetry involves aerial photography of the earth’s surface and subsequently processing the images to provide a more accurate depiction of the area (Orthophotography). It’s used by the Spanish Instituto Geográfico Nacional to update road cartography but requires a significant amount of manual labor due to the need to perform visual inspection of all tiled images. Deep Learning techniques (artificial neural networks with more than one hidden layer) can perform road detection but it is still unclear how to find the optimal network architecture. Our system applies grammar guided genetic programming to the search of deep neural network architectures. In this kind of evolutive algorithm all the population individuals (here candidate network architectures) are constrained to rules specified by a grammar that defines valid and useful structural patterns to guide the search process. Grammar used includes well-known complex structures (e.g. Inception-like modules) combined with a custom designed mutation operator (dynamically links the mutation probability to structural diversity). Pilot results show that the system is able to design models for road detection that obtain test accuracies similar to that reached by state of the art models when evaluated over a dataset from the Spanish National Aerial Orthophotography Plan.

Infrared small target detection (ISTD) plays a crucial role in both civilian and military applications. The detection of small targets against dense cluttered backgrounds remains a challenging task, requiring the collaboration of false alarm source elimination and target detection. Existing approaches primarily focus on modeling targets while often neglecting false alarm sources. To address this limitation, we propose a Target and False Alarm Collaborative Detection Network to leverage the information provided by false alarm sources and the background. Firstly, we introduce a False Alarm Source Estimation Block (FEB) that estimates potential interferences present in the background by extracting features on multiple scales and employing stepwise upsampling for feature fusion. Subsequently, we propose a framework that employs multiple FEBs to eliminate false alarm sources across multiple scales. Finally, a Target Segmentation Block (TSB) is introduced to accurately segment the targets to produce the final detection result. Experiments on public datasets demonstrate that, compared to other methods, our model achieves high accuracy in segmenting targets while being able to extract false alarm sources which can be used for further studies.

In recent years, researchers have paid increasing attention on hyperspectral image (HSI) classification using deep learning methods. To improve the accuracy and reduce the training samples, we propose a double-branch dual-attention mechanism network (DBDA) for HSI classification in this paper. Two branches are designed in DBDA to capture plenty of spectral and spatial features contained in HSI. Furthermore, a channel attention block and a spatial attention block are applied to these two branches respectively, which enables DBDA to refine and optimize the extracted feature maps. A series of experiments on four hyperspectral datasets show that the proposed framework has superior performance to the state-of-the-art algorithm, especially when the training samples are signally lacking.

To enhance the peak-shaving capability of the boiler, a mathematical model of hydrodynamic and wall temperature characteristics for the water-cooled wall of a 1000 MW boiler was established. The attributes pertaining to the mass flow distribution, the temperature of the effluent working fluid, pressure drop, and the thermal distribution across the wall surfaces at 30% of the boiler's maximum continuous rating (BMCR) were meticulously computed and subjected to a thorough analytical review. The findings suggest that, under the operation at 30% BMCR load, there is a substantial equilibrium in the flow distribution across the quartet of walls that constitute the water-cooled wall assembly. The maximum mass flow rate deviations in the helical and vertical sections are 1.95% and 3.47%, respectively, showing small flow deviations and reasonable distribution. The temperature deviation in the helical section is 0.3 °C, reflecting the characteristic low thermal deviation in helical tubes. While the temperature deviation at the outlet of the vertical section is higher, it remains within safe limits. The pressure loss across the water-cooled wall system amounts to 0.4 MPa. The peak wall temperature reaches 337.5°C, remaining within the material's permissible safety limits. In-depth performance analysis ensures the safe operating conditions of the water-cooled wall during low load conditions.

In this paper, we introduce ResNetMF, a groundbreaking approach that harnesses the power of residual network matrix factorization to revolutionize recommendation systems. ResNetMF integrates residual networks, renowned for their ability to capture intricate patterns and features, with matrix factorization techniques that excel in modelling user-item interactions. This fusion presents a novel solution that surpasses the limitations of traditional recommendation systems. Through comprehensive experimentation and evaluation of diverse datasets, ResNetMF demonstrates remarkable enhancements in recommendation accuracy and efficiency. By effectively capturing both linear and nonlinear relationships in user-item interactions, ResNetMF provides superior recommendation quality. The outcomes from experiments unequivocally highlight the superiority of ResNetMF over existing state-of-the-art recommendation approaches, thereby validating its innovative nature and underscoring its potential to shape the future of recommendation systems. Through the integration of the deep residual network, ResNetMF approach facilitates the training of neural networks, enabling them to explore the underlying data layers more comprehensively. Extensive experimentation and evaluation across various datasets provide compelling evidence for the superiority of ResNetMF. Moreover, the proposed method utilized natural language processing (NLP) techniques for targeted information dissemination in recommendation systems, emphasizing the importance of personalized and relevant recommendations for user satisfaction and engagement.

In order to design effective protective coatings against corrosion, the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as compound and composite with silver nanoparticles (nAg/PVA) were electrodeposited on copper surface employing electrochemical techniques such as linear potentiometry and cyclic voltammetry. A new paradigm was used to distinguish the features of coatings, i.e., a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) was implemented to automatically and hierarchically extract the discriminative characteristics from the information given by optical microscopy images. The main arguments that invoke a CNN implementation in the surface science of materials are the following: artificial intelligence techniques can be successfully applied to learn differences between surface coatings; based on their popularity for image processing, CNN can model images related to the problem of coatings; deep learning is able to extract the features that are distinguishable between material surfaces. To provide an overview of the copper surface, CNN was applied on microscope slides (CNN@microscopy) and inherently learnt distinctive characteristics for each class of surface morphology. The material surface morphology controlled by CNN without the interference of the human factor was successfully conducted, in our study, to extract the similarities/differences between unprotected and protected surfaces to establish the PVA and nAg/PVA performance to retard the copper corrosion.

This paper presents a novel approach for semantic segmentation of building roof in dense urban environment with Deep Convolution Neural Network (DCNN) using imagery acquired by a Chinese Very High Resolution (VHR) satellite mission, i.e. GaoFen-2 (GF-2). To provide an operational end-to-end work flow for accurate build roof mapping with feature extraction as well as image segmentation, a fully convolutional DCNN with both convolutional and deconvolutional layers is designed to perform the VHR image analysis for labeling pixels. Since the diverse urban patterns and building styles in large areas, sample image data sets of building roof and non-building roof are collected over different metropolitan regions in China. We selected typical cities with dense urban environment in each metropolitan region as study areas for collecting training and test samples. High performance cluster with GPU-mounted workstations is employed to perform the model training and optimization. With the building roof samples collected over different cities, the predictive model with multiple NN layers is developed for building roof labeling. The validation of the building roof map shows that the overall accuracy(OA) and the mean Intersection Over Union( mIOU) of DCNN based segmentation are 94.67%, 0.85 respectively, while CRF-refined segmentation achieved OA of 94.69% and mIOU of 0.83. The results suggest that the proposed approach is a promising solution for building roof mapping with VHR images over large areas across different urban and building patterns. With the operational acquisition of GF2 VHR imagery, it is expected to develop an automated pipeline for operational built-up area monitoring and timely update of building roof map over large areas.

Future manned and deep space missions require an Electrical Power System (EPS) that can deliver high power while overcoming challenges like weight and volume constraints and the harsh environment of space. To supply, store, and transmit power to various satellite subsystems, a variety of DC-DC converters are employed. The design specifications of DC-DC converters for various satellite applications are identified in this article, which also offers a state-of-the-art review of non-isolated, isolated, and integrated topologies. Foreseeing the future of electric propulsion, various electric sources for electric propulsion are contrasted, and converters for electric propulsion are studied. The chosen topologies are compared in terms of practical parameters like reliability, modularity, redundancy, efficiency, and power density. Application-wise comparisons of the topologies are also presented, along with details on how well they work with different kinds of satellites. The article also identifies the areas that are still unexplored for each application. In view of the identified research gaps, a generalized Modular Isolated Interleaved topology of a DC-DC converter is proposed for satellite applications, which is one of the articles’ unique contributions. The MATLAB simulation results of the proposed method, taking Cuk converter as an example for a total power of 5kW are presented. Findings indicate that adding more modules improves the system’s overall reliability, efficiency, and power density by lowering losses, semiconductor current stress, and component size. Such designs are easily adaptable to satellite applications, particularly at high power levels.

The detection of seismic events at regional and teleseismic distances is critical to Nuclear Treaty Monitoring. Traditionally, detecting regional and teleseismic events has required the use of an expensive multi-instrument seismic array; however in this work, we present DeepPick, a novel seismic detection algorithm capable of array-like performance from a single trace. We achieve this directly, by training our single-trace detector against labeled events from an array catalog, and by utilizing a deep temporal convolutional neural network. The training data consists of all arrivals in the International Seismological Centre Catalog for seven seismic arrays over a five year window from 1 Jan 2010 to 1 Jan 2015, yielding a total training set of 608,362 detections. The test set consists of the same seven arrays over a one year window from 1 Jan 2015 to 1 Jan 2016. We report our results by training the algorithm on six of the arrays and testing it on the seventh, so as to demonstrate the transportability and generalization of the technique to new stations. Detection performance against this test set is outstanding. Fixing a type-I error rate of 1%, the algorithm achieves an overall recall rate of 73% on the 141,095 array beam picks in the test set, yielding 102,394 correct detections. This is more than 4 times the 23,259 detections found in the analyst-reviewed single-trace catalogs over the same period, and represents an 8dB improvement in detector sensitivity over current methods. These results demonstrate the potential of our algorithm to significantly enhance the effectiveness of the global treaty monitoring network.

Deep learning models are part of the family of artificial neural networks and, as such, it suffers of catastrophic interference when they learn sequentially. In addition, most of these models have a rigid architecture which prevents the incremental learning of new classes. To overcome these drawbacks, in this article we propose the Self-Improving Generative Artificial Neural Network (SIGANN), a type of end-to-end Deep Neural Network system which is able to ease the catastrophic forgetting problem when leaning new classes. In this method, we introduce a novelty detection model to automatically detect samples of new classes, moreover an adversarial auto-encoder is used to produce samples of previous classes. This system consists of three main modules: a classifier module implemented using a Deep Convolutional Neural Network, a generator module based on an adversarial autoencoder; and a novelty detection module, implemented using an OpenMax activation function. Using the EMNIST data set, the model was trained incrementally, starting with a small set of classes. The results of the simulation show that SIGANN is able to retain previous knowledge with a gradual forgetfulness for each learning sequence. Moreover, SIGANN can detect new classes that are hidden in the data and, therefore, proceed with incremental class learning.

Treatment efficacy for age-related macular degeneration relies on early diagnosis and precise determination of the disease stage. It involves analyzing biomarkers in retinal images, which can be challenging when handling a large flow of patients and compromise the quality of healthcare services. Clinical decision support systems offer a solution to this issue by employing intelligent algorithms to recognize biomarkers and specify the age-related macular degeneration stage through the analysis of retinal images. However, different stages of age-related macular degeneration may exhibit similar biomarkers, complicating the application of intelligent algorithms. This paper introduces an approach to overcome these challenges using hybrid and hierarchical classification. By leveraging the hybrid structure of the classifier, we can effectively manage issues commonly encountered with medical data sets, such as class imbalance and strong correlations between variables. The modifications to the intelligent algorithm proposed in this work for staging age-related macular degeneration resulted in an increase in average accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity by 20% compared to initial values. The Cohen’s Kappa coefficient used for consistency estimation between the regression model and expert assessments of the intermediate class severity was 0.708, indicating a high level of agreement.

In recent years, different deep learning frameworks were introduced for hyperspectral image (HSI) classification. However, the proposed network models have a higher model complexity and do not provide high classification accuracy if few-shot learning is used. This paper pre-sents an HSI classification method that combines random patches network (RPNet) and re-cursive filtering (RF) to obtain informative deep features. The proposed method first convolves image bands with random patches to extract multi-level deep RPNet features. Thereafter, the RPNet feature set is subjected to dimension reduction through principal component analysis (PCA) and the extracted components are filtered using the RF procedure. Finally, HSI spectral features and the obtained RPNet-RF features are combined to classify the HSI using a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. In order to test the performance of the proposed RPNet-RF method, some experiments were performed on three widely known datasets using a few training samples for each class and classification results were compared with those obtained by other advanced HSI classification methods adopted for small training samples. The comparison showed that the RPNet-RF classification is characterized by higher values of such evaluation metrics as overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient (https://github.com/UchaevD/RPNet-RF).

Preliminaries Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) applications have recently emerged in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems focusing mostly on vibration analysis. However, the SHM literature shows clearly that there is a lack of application regarding the combination of PZT (Lead Zirconate Titanate) based method and CNN. Likewise, applications using CNN along with the Electromechanical Impedance (EMI) technique applied to SHM systems are rare. To encourage this combination, an innovative SHM solution through the combination of the EMI-PZT and CNN is presented here. To accomplish this, the EMI signature is split into several parts followed by computing the Euclidean distances among them to form a RGB (red, green and blue) frame. As a result, we introduce a dataset formed from the EMI-PZT signals of 720 frames, encompassing a total of 4 types of structural conditions for each PZT. In a case study, the CNN-based method was experimentally evaluated using three PZTs glued onto an aluminum plate. The results reveal an effective pattern classification; yielding a 100% hit rate which outperforms other SHM approaches. Furthermore, the method needs only a small dataset for training the CNN, providing several advantages for industrial applications.
