The article presents an innovative method for synthesizing radiation patterns efficiently by 1 combining the Taguchi method and neural networks, while validating the results on a 10-element 2 antenna array. The Taguchi method aims to minimize product and process variability, while neural 3 networks are used to model the relationship between antenna design parameters and radiation 4 pattern characteristics. This approach utilizes Taguchi parameters as inputs for the neural network, 5 which is then trained on a dataset generated by the Taguchi method. After training, the network is 6 validated using a real 10-element antenna array. Analytical results demonstrate that this method 7 enables efficient synthesis of radiation patterns with a significant reduction in computation time 8 compared to traditional approaches. Furthermore, validation on the antenna array confirms the 9 accuracy and robustness of the approach, showing a high correlation between predicted performances 10 by the neural network model and actual measurements on the antenna array.In summary, our article 11 highlights that the combined use of the Taguchi method and neural networks, with validation on a 12 real antenna array, offers a promising approach for efficient synthesis of antenna radiation patterns. 13 This approach combines speed, accuracy, and reliability in antenna system design.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a current trend in computer science, which extends itself its amazing capacities to other technologies such as mechatronics and robotics. Going beyond technological applications, the philosophy behind AI is that there is a vague and potential convergence of artificial manufacture and natural world although the limiting approach may be still very far away, but why? The implicit problem is that Darwin theory of evolution focuses on natural world where breeding conservation is the cornerstone of the existence of creature world but there is no similar concept of breeding conservation in artificial world whose things are created by human. However, after developing for a long time until now, AI issues an interesting concept of generation in which artifacts created by computer science can derive their new generations inheriting their aspects / characteristics. Such generated artifacts make us look back on offsprings by the process of breeding conservation in natural world. Therefore, it is possible to think that AI generation, which is a recent subject of AI, is a significant development in computer science as well as high-tech domain. AI generation does not help us to reach near biological evolution even in the case that AI can combine with biological technology but, AI generation can help us to extend our viewpoint about Darwin theory of evolution as well as there may exist some uncertain relationship between man-made world and natural world. Anyhow AI generation is a current important subject in AI and there are two main generative models in computer science: 1) generative model that applies large language model into generating natural language texts understandable by human and 2) generative model that applies deep neural network into generating digital content such as sound, image, and video. This technical report focuses on deep generative model (DGM) for digital content generation, which is a short summary of approaches to implement DGMs. Researchers can read this work as an introduction to DGM with easily understandable explanations.

One of the most dangerous diseases that threaten people is Cancer. Cancer if diagnosed in earlier stages can be eradicated with its life threatening consequences. In addition, accuracy in prediction plays a major role. Hence, developing a reliable model that contributes much towards the medical community in early diagnosis of Biopsy images with perfect accuracy come to the scenario. The article aims towards development of better predictive models using multi-variate data and high-resolution diagnostic tools in clinical cancer research. This paper proposes the social spider optimization (SSO) algorithm tuned neural network to classify microscopic biopsy images of cancer. The significance of the proposed model relies on the effective tuning of the weights of the NN classifier by the SSO algorithm. The performance of the proposed strategy is analysed with the performance metrics, such as accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and MCC measures, and are attained to be 95.9181%, 94.2515%, 97.125%, and 97.68% respectively, which shows the effectiveness of the proposed method in effective cancer disease diagnosis.

Nonlinear optimization (NOPT) is a meaningful tool for solving complex tasks in fields like engineering, economics, and operations research, among others. However, NOPT has problems when it comes to dealing with data variability and noisy input measurements that lead to incorrect solutions. Furthermore, nonlinear constraints may result in outcomes that are either infeasible or suboptimal, such as non-convex optimization. This paper introduces a novel regularized physics-informed neural network (RPINN) framework as a new NOPT tool for both supervised and unsupervised data-driven scenarios. By using custom activation functions and regularization penalties in an artificial neural network (ANN), RPINN can handle data variability and noisy inputs. Besides, it uses physics principles to build the network architecture, computing the optimization variables based on network weights and learned features. In addition, it uses automatic differentiation training to make the system scalable and cut down on computation time through batch-based back-propagation. The test results for both supervised and unsupervised NOPT tasks show that our RPINN can provide solutions that are competitive compared to state-of-the-art solvers. In turn, RPINN’s robustness against noisy input measurements makes it particularly valuable in environments with fluctuating information. Additionally, RPINN’s ANN-based foundation offers significant flexibility and scalability.

Evolutionary algorithms and swarm intelligence algorithms find applicability in reinforcement learning of neural networks due to their independence from gradient-based methods. To achieve successful training of neural networks using these algorithms, careful considerations must be made to select appropriate algorithms due to the availability of various algorithmic variations. In Part1, 2 and 3, the author previously reported experimental evaluations on Evolution Strategy, Genetic Algorithm, and Differential Evolution for reinforcement learning of neural networks, utilizing the Acrobot control task. This article constitutes Part4 of the series of comparative research. In this study, Particle Swarm Optimization is adopted as an instance of major swarm intelligence algorithms. The experimental result shows that PSO performed worse than all of DE, GA and ES. The difference between PSO and DE was statistically significant (p<.01). In addition, PSO exhibited lower capability in exploring solutions in high-dimensional search spaces than DE, GA, and ES did. A larger swarm size compensated for the weakness of PSO in global exploration, thus making itself more beneficial than a larger number of swarm search iterations.

Sparse training (ST) aims to ameliorate deep learning by replacing fully connected artificial neural networks (ANNs) with sparse or ultra-sparse ones, such as brain networks are, therefore it might benefit to borrow brain-inspired learning paradigms from complex network intelligence theory. Here, we launch the ultra-sparse advantage challenge, whose goal is to offer evidence on the extent to which ultra-sparse (around 1% connection retained) topologies can achieve any leaning advantage against fully connected. Epitopological learning is a field of network science and complex network intelligence that studies how to implement learning on complex networks by changing the shape of their connectivity structure (epitopological plasticity). One way to implement Epitopological (epi- means new) Learning is via link prediction: predicting the likelihood of non-observed links to appear in the network. Cannistraci-Hebb learning theory inspired the CH3-L3 network automata rule for link prediction which is effective for general-purpose link prediction. Here, starting from CH3-L3 we propose Epitopological Sparse Meta-deep Learning (ESML) to apply Epitopological Learning to sparse training. In empirical experiments, we find that ESML learns ANNs with ultra-sparse hyperbolic (epi-)topology in which emerges a community layer organization that is meta-deep (meaning that each layer also has an internal depth due to power-law node hierarchy). Furthermore, we discover that ESML can in many cases automatically sparse the neurons during training (arriving even to 30% neurons left in hidden layers), this process of node dynamic removal is called percolation. Starting from this network science evidence, we design Cannistraci-Hebb training (CHT), a 4-step training methodology that puts ESML at its heart. We conduct experiments on 7 datasets and 5 network structures comparing CHT to dynamic sparse training SOTA algorithms and the fully connected counterparts. The results indicate that, with a mere 1% of links retained during training, CHT surpasses fully connected networks on VGG16, GoogLeNet, ResNet50, and ResNet152. This key finding is an evidence for ultra-sparse advantage and signs a milestone in deep learning. CHT acts akin to a gradient-free oracle that adopts CH3-L3-based epitopological learning to guide the placement of new links in the ultra-sparse network topology to facilitate sparse-weight gradient learning, and this in turn reduces the convergence time of ultra-sparse training. Finally, CHT offers the first examples of parsimony dynamic sparse training because, in many datasets, it can retain network performance by percolating and significantly reducing the node network size. The study aims to analyze the characteristic parameters of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) power generation on industrial plant buildings in the Ningxia region of China, in order to evaluate the impact of passive design characteristic parameters on the benefits of PV power generation and determine the degree of impact of different passive design characteristic parameters. The methodology involves analyzing the characteristics of existing industrial plant buildings in Ningxia, China, and conducting a series of regional studies on the parameters of plant PV power generation influencing factors. The simulation results revealed that five features, including roof form, PV panel laying pattern, PV panel laying area, azimuth angle, and PV module material, have a significant impact on PV power generation benefits of industrial plant buildings.The study further uses MATLAB 2022b to build a backpropagation neural network model with 5 neurons in the implicit layer to predict the PV power generation benefits. The model calculates the whole-life cycle power generation benefits and the whole-life cycle reduction of carbon emissions as output data. Finally, the Mean Impact Value (MIV) method is employed to select the feature parameter values one by one within their range, and the passive design feature parameters that have the greatest influence on the prediction results are identified as the PV panel laying method, the PV panel tilt angle, and the PV material parameters, respectively.

Accurate forecasting of available energy portion that corresponds to the reservoir inflow of the month(s) ahead provides important decision support for the hydropower plants in energy pro-duction planning for revenue maximization, as well as for the environmental impact prevention, and flood control at the upstream and downstream of a basin. Therefore, a reliable forecasting tool or model is deemed necessary and crucial. Considering the fluctuation and nonlinearity of data which significantly influence the forecasting results, this study develops an effective hybrid model by integrating Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) called “PSO-ANN” model based on the hydrological and meteorological data pre-processed by cross-correlation function (CCF), autocorrelation function (AFC), and normalization techniques for predicting the available energy portion corresponding to the reservoir inflow mentioned above for a case study hydropower plant in Laos namely, Theun-Hinboun hydropower plant (THHP). The model was evaluated by using correlation coefficient (r), relative error (RE), root mean square error (RMSE), and Taylor diagram plots in comparison with the popular single algorithm approaches such as ANN, and NARX models. Results demonstrated the superiority of the proposed PSO-ANN approach over the other two models.

Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is the most active field in the design of current complex system engineering, which is possessed with such two difficulties as subsystem information exchange and analytical and computational complexity of systems. Therefore, an improved collaborative optimization algorithm based on ANN (artificial neural network) response surface was proposed dependent on the consistency constraint algorithm and concurrent subspace algorithm. As an optimization method with secondary structure, it satisfied only local constraints in discipline layer, but provided a coordinated mechanism for interdisciplinary conflict in system layer. Finally, it was applied in the multidisciplinary design optimization of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). As shown from the result, the MDO convergence stability and reliability of low resistance, low noise and high maneuvering performance of the AUV shape can be ensured by the improved collaborative optimization algorithm, thus verifying the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Bearings are widely used in various types of electrical machinery and equipment. As their core components, failures will often cause serious consequences . At present, most methods of parameter adjustment are still manual adjustment of parameters. This adjustment method is susceptible to prior knowledge and easy to fall into the local optimal solution, failing to obtain the global optimal solution and requires a lot of resources.Therefore, this paper proposes a new method of bearing fault diagnosis based on wavelet packet transform and convolutional neural network optimized by simulated annealing algorithm.The experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper has a more accurate effect in feature extraction and fault classification compared with traditional bearing fault diagnosis methods. At the same time, compared with the traditional artificial neural network parameter adjustment, this paper introduces the simulated annealing algorithm to automatically adjust the parameters of the neural network, thereby obtaining an adaptive bearing fault diagnosis method. To verify the effectiveness of the method, the Case Western Reserve University bearing database was used for testing, and the traditional intelligent bearing fault diagnosis method was compared. The results show that the method proposed in this paper has good results in bearing fault diagnosis. Provides a new way of thinking in the field of bearing fault diagnosis in parameter adjustment and fault classification algorithms

— In a smart healthcare system," Human Activity Recognition (HAR)" is considered as an efficient approach in pervasive computing from activity sensor readings. The "Ambient Assisted Living (AAL)" in the home or community helps the people to provide independent care and enhanced living quality. However, many AAL models are restricted to multiple factors that include both the computational cost and system complexity. Moreover, the HAR concept has more relevance because of its applications, such as content-based video search, sports play analysis, crowd behavior prediction systems, patient monitoring systems, and surveillance systems. This paper attempts to implement the HAR system using a popular deep learning algorithm, namely "Recurrent Neural Network (RNN)" with the activity data collected from smart activity sensors over time, and it is publicly available in the "UC Irvine Machine Learning Repository (UCI)". The proposed model involves three processes: (1) data collection, (b) optimal feature learning, and (c) activity recognition. The data gathered from the benchmark repository was initially subjected to optimal feature selection that helped to select the most significant features. The proposed optimal feature selection method is based on a new meta-heuristic algorithm called "Colliding Bodies Optimization (CBO)". An objective function derived from the recognition accuracy has been used for accomplishing the optimal feature selection. The proposed model on the concerned benchmark dataset outperformed the conventional models with enhanced performance.

Amid the swift progression of the global automobile industry, the aspiration for lightweight vehicle design has surfaced as a crucial approach to boost fuel efficiency and curtail environmental impact. The objective of this study revolves around achieving holistic optimization of vehicle structure via detailed scrutiny of vehicle process characteristics, amalgamated with a Back Propagation neural network (BPNN) optimized by a genetic algorithm (GA) and a topology optimization (TO) method.The process initiates with an examination of the vehicle's technical characteristics, succeeded by an optimization protocol that couples GA with BPNN. This exhaustive optimization procedure derives the best-fit values of design parameters and identifies the globally optimal lightweight design approach. Subsequently, a comprehensive structural optimization is actualized by modifying the topological distribution of the structure.A simulation experiment of the conceptual car body beam skeleton is conducted as a conclusive step, and the anti-collision capacity of the car body beam skeleton is assessed by measuring deformation intrusion. The findings reveal that in the vehicle topology optimization, a comparative analysis of pre and post-optimization results indicates an improved topological density across diverse sections. The topological density of the vehicle's frontal structure escalates from 0.75 to 0.8. Following optimization, the stiffness assessment records a marginal increase (within the range of 0.02–0.05), implying that the lightweight design does not compromise the general rigidity of the structure.The optimized body structure manifests superior crashworthiness in the crash test: the deformation intrusion diminishes by 27% in front-end collisions. In side impacts, the deformation and intrusion at critical points are reduced by 13.15% to 10% respectively. The comprehensive method proposed herein proves to be an efficient strategy to actualize the lightweight design of vehicles.

Network Embedding (NE) is an important method to learn the representations of network via a low-dimensional space. Conventional NE models focus on capturing the structure information and semantic information of vertices while neglecting such information for edges. In this work, we propose a novel NE model named BimoNet to capture both the structure and semantic information of edges. BimoNet is composed of two parts, i.e., the bi-mode embedding part and the deep neural network part. For bi-mode embedding part, the first mode named add-mode is used to express the entity-shared features of edges and the second mode named subtract-mode is employed to represent the entity-specific features of edges. These features actually reflect the semantic information. For deep neural network part, we firstly regard the edges in a network as nodes, and the vertices as links, which will not change the overall structure of the whole network. Then we take the nodes' adjacent matrix as the input of the deep neural network as it can obtain similar representations for nodes with similar structure. Afterwards, by jointly optimizing the objective function of these two parts, BimoNet could preserve both the semantic and structure information of edges. In experiments, we evaluate BimoNet on three real-world datasets and task of relation extraction, and BimoNet is demonstrated to outperform state-of-the-art baseline models consistently and significantly.

This study aims to evaluate a new approach in modeling gully erosion susceptibility based on deep learning neural network (DLNN) model, ensemble Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with DLNN (PSO-DLNN) and comparing these approaches with common artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) models in Shiran watershed, Iran. For this purpose, 13 independent variables affecting gully erosion susceptibility in the study area, including altitude, slope, aspect, plan curvature, profile curvature, drainage density, distance from river, land use, soil, lithology, rainfall, , stream power index (SPI), topographic wetness index (TWI), were prepared. Also, 132 gully erosion locations were identified during field visits. Data for modeling were divided into two categories of training (70%) and testing (30%). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) parameters including sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive value (NPV), positive predictive value (PPV) and area under curve (AUC) were used to evaluate the performance of the models. The results showed that, the AUC values from ROC with considering testing datasets of PSO-DLNN is 0.89 and which is associated with superb accuracy. Rest of the models also associated with optimal accuracy and near about PSO-DLNN model; the AUC values from ROC of DLNN, SVM and ANN for testing datasets are 0.87, 0.85 and 0.84 respectively. The PSO algorithm has updated and optimized the weights of DLNN model, and as a result, the efficiency of this model in predicting gully erosion susceptibility has increased. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of DLNN model and its ensemble with PSO algorithm can be used as a novel and practical method in predicting the susceptibility of gully erosion that helps planners and managers in managing and reducing the risk of this phenomenon.

Equality and incomparability multi-label ranking have not been introduced to learning before. This paper proposes new native ranker neural network to address the problem of multi-label ranking including incomparable preference orders using a new activation and error functions and new architecture. Preference Neural Network PNN solves the multi-label ranking problem, where labels may have indifference preference orders or subgroups which are equally ranked. PNN is a nondeep, multiple-value neuron, single middle layer and one or more output layers network. PNN uses a novel positive smooth staircase (PSS) or smooth staircase (SS) activation function and represents preference orders and Spearman ranking correlation as objective functions. It is introduced in two types, Type A is traditional NN architecture and Type B uses expanding architecture by introducing new type of hidden neuron has multiple activation function in middle layer and duplicated output layers to reinforce the ranking by increasing the number of weights. PNN accepts single data instance as inputs and output neurons represent the number of labels and output value represents the preference value. PNN is evaluated using a new preference mining data set that contains repeated label values which have not experimented on before. SS and PS speed-up the learning and PNN outperforms five previously proposed methods for strict label ranking in terms of accurate results with high computational efficiency.

In recent years, Neural networks are increasingly deployed in various fields to learn complex patterns and make accurate predictions. However, designing an effective neural network model is a challenging task that requires careful consideration of various factors, including architecture, optimization method, and regularization technique. This paper aims to comprehensively overview the state-of-the-art artificial neural network (ANN) generation and highlight key challenges and opportunities in machine learning applications. It provides a critical analysis of current neural network model design methodologies, focusing on the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches. Also, it explores the use of different learning approaches, including convolutional neural networks (CNN), deep neural networks (DNN), and recurrent neural networks (RNN) in image recognition, natural language processing, and time series analysis. Besides, it discusses the benefits of choosing the ideal values for the different components of ANN, such as the number of Input/output layers, hidden layers number, activation function type, epochs number, and model type selection, which help improve the model performance and generalization. Furthermore, it identifies some common pitfalls and limitations of existing design methodologies, such as overfitting, lack of interpretability, and computational complexity. Finally, it proposes some directions for future research, such as developing more efficient and interpretable neural network architectures, improving the scalability of training algorithms, and exploring the potential of new paradigms, such as Spiking Neural Networks, quantum neural networks, and neuromorphic computing.

Creating self-learning algorithms, developing deep neural networks and improving other methods that "learn" for various areas of human activity is the main goal of the theory of machine learning. It helps to replace the human with a machine, aiming to increase the quality of production. The theory of artificial neural networks, which already have replaced the humans in problems of detection of moving objects, recognition of images or sounds, time series prediction, big data analysis and numerical methods remains the most dispersed branch of the theory of machine learning. Certainly, for each area of human activity it is necessary to select appropriate neural network architectures, methods of data processing and some novel tools from applied mathematics. But the universal problem for all these neural networks with specific data is the achieving the highest accuracy in short time. Such problem can be resolved by increasing sizes of architectures and improving data preprocessing, where the accuracy rises with the training time. But there is a possibility to increase the accuracy without time growing, applying optimization methods. In this survey we demonstrate existing optimization algorithms of all types, which can be used in neural networks. There are presented modifications of basic optimization algorithms, such as stochastic gradient descent, adaptive moment estimation, Newton and quasi-Newton optimization methods. But the most recent optimization algorithms are related to information geometry, for Fisher-Rao and Bregman metrics. This approach in optimization extended the theory of classic neural networks to quantum and complex-valued neural networks, due to geometric and probabilistic tools. There are provided applications of all introduced optimization algorithms, what delighted many kinds of neural networks, which can be improved by including any advanced approaches in minimization of the loss function. Afterwards, we demonstrated ways of developing optimization algorithms in further researches, engaging neural networks with progressive architectures. Classical gradient based optimizers can be replaced by fractional order, bilevel and, even, gradient free optimization methods. There is a possibility to add such analogues in graph, spiking, complex-valued, quantum and wavelet neural networks. Besides the usual problems of image recognition, time series prediction, object detection, there are many are other tasks for modern theory of machine learning, such as solving problem of quantum computations, partial differential and integro-differential equations, stochastic processes and Brownian motion, making decisions and computer algebra.

Standard ANNs lack flexibility when handling corrupted input due to their fixed structure. Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) can utilize biological temporal coding features, such as noise-induced stochastic resonance and dynamical synapses to increase a model’s performance when its parameters are not optimized for a given input. Using the analog XOR task as a simplified Convolutional Neural Network analog, this paper demonstrates two key results: (1) SNNs solve the problem linearly inseparable in ANN with over 10% improvement in the optimal setting, and (2) in SNNs, the synaptic noise and dynamical synapses compensate for non-optimal parameters, achieving near-optimal results.

Cognitive neuroscience is the study of how the human brain functions on tasks like decision making, language, perception and reasoning. Deep learning is a class of machine learning algorithms that use neural networks. They are designed to model the responses of neurons in the human brain. Learning can be supervised or unsupervised. Ngram token models are used extensively in language prediction. Ngrams are probabilistic models that are used in predicting the next word or token. They are a statistical model of word sequences or tokens and are called Language Models or Lms. Ngrams are essential in creating language prediction models. We are exploring a broader sandbox ecosystems enabling for AI. Specifically, around Deep learning applications on unstructured content form on the web.

Computer network attacks are evolving in parallel with the evolution of hardware and neural network architecture. Despite major advancements in Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS) technology, most implementations still depend on signature-based intrusion detection systems, which can’t identify unknown attacks. Deep learning can help NIDS to detect novel threats since it has a strong generalization ability. The deep neural network’s architecture has a significant impact on the model’s results. We propose a genetic algorithm based model to find the optimal number of hidden layers and the number of neurons in each layer of the deep neural network (DNN) architecture for the network intrusion detection binary classification problem. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DNN architecture shows better performance than classical machine learning algorithms at a lower computational cost.

: The significance of heating load (HL) accurate approximation is the primary motivation of this research to distinguish the most efficient predictive model among several neural-metaheuristic models. The proposed models are through synthesizing multi-layer perceptron network (MLP) with ant lion optimization (ALO), biogeography-based optimization (BBO), dragonfly algorithm (DA), evolutionary strategy (ES), invasive weed optimization (IWO), and league champion optimization (LCA) hybrid algorithms. Each ensemble is optimized in terms of the operating population. Accordingly, the ALO-MLP, BBO-MLP, DA-MLP, ES-MLP, IWO-MLP, and LCA-MLP presented their best performance for population sizes of 350, 400, 200, 500, 50, and 300, respectively. The comparison was carried out by implementing a ranking system. Based on the obtained overall scores (OSs), the BBO (OS = 36) featured as the most capable optimization technique, followed by ALO (OS = 27) and ES (OS = 20). Due to the efficient performance of these algorithms, the corresponding MLPs can be promising substitutes for traditional methods used for HL analysis.

Computer-aided image diagnostics (CAD) have been used in many fields of diagnostic medicine. It relies heavily on classical computer vision and artificial intelligence. Quantum neural network (QNN) has been introduced by many researchers around the world and presented recently by research corporations such as Microsoft, Google, and IBM. In this paper, the investigation of the validity of using the QNN algorithm for machine-based breast cancer detection was performed. To validate the learnability of the QNN, a series of learnability tests were performed alongside with classical convolutional neural network (CCNN). QNN is built using the Cirq library to perform the assimilation of quantum computation on classical computers. Series of investigations were performed to study the learnability characteristics of QNN and CCNN under the same computational conditions. The comparison was performed for real Mammogram data sets. The investigations showed success in terms of recognizing the data and training. Our work shows better performance of QNN in terms of successfully training and producing a valid model for smaller data set compared to CCNN.

Convolutional neural networks (CNN) have attracted much attention as a commonly used method for hyperspectral image (HSI) classification in recent years, however, CNNs can only be applied to Euclidean data and have limitations in dealing with relationships due to the limitations of local feature extraction. However, each pixel of a hyperspectral image contains a set of spectral bands that are correlated and interact with each other, and the methods used to process Euclidean data cannot effectively obtain these correlations. In contrast, the graph convolutional network (GCN) can be used in non-Euclidean data, but usually leads to oversmoothing and ignoring local detail features due to the need for superpixel segmentation processing to reduce computational effort. To overcome the above problems, we constructed a network a fusion network based on GCN and CNN, which contains two branches: a graph convolutional network based on superpixel segmentation and a convolutional network with added attention mechanism. The graph convolu-tional branch can extract the structural features and capture the relationships between the nodes, and the convolutional branch can extract the detailed features in the local fine region. Owing to the fact that the features extracted from the two branches are different, the classification performance can be improved by fusing the complementary features extracted from the two branches. To vali-date the proposed algorithm, experiments were conducted on three widely used datasets, namely Indian Pines, Pavia University, and Salinas, and the overall accuracy of 98.78% was obtained in the Indian Pines dataset, and the overall accuracy of 98.99% and 98.69% was obtained in the other two datasets. The results showed that the proposed fusion network can obtain richer features and achieve high classification accuracy.

Nowadays smartphone utilization for disease diagnosis and remote health care applications has become promising due to their ubiquity. Here, a novel convolutional neural network method for detecting keratoconus that is wholly implemented on a smartphone is proposed. The proposed method provides accurate detection of over 72.9% for all stages of keratoconus. Preliminary results indicate 90%, 83%, 64% and 52% detection rate for severe, advanced, moderate and mild stages of disease, respectively.

The Station logo is a way for a TV station to claim copyright, which can realize the analysis and understanding of the video by the identification of the station logo, so as to ensure that the broadcasted TV signal will not be illegally interfered. In this paper, we design a station logo detection method based on Convolutional Neural Network by the characteristics of the station, such as small scale-to-height ratio change and relatively fixed position. Firstly, in order to realize the preprocessing and feature extraction of the station data, the video samples are collected, filtered, framed, labeled and processed. Then, the training sample data and the test sample data are divided proportionally to train the station detection model. Finally, the sample is tested to evaluate the effect of the training model in practice. The simulation experiments prove its validity.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) have been utilised to forecast the foreign exchange market (Forex). However, such models usually exhibit unstable behaviour, as data perturbations often downgrade the functionality of the entire network due to their monolithic architecture. Hence, this study proposes a novel neuroscience-informed modular network applied to the closing prices and the sentiments retrieved from Yahoo Finance and Twitter APIs, aiming to anticipate better price fluctuations in Euro to British Pound Sterling (EUR/GBP) rather than monolithic methods. The proposed model is based on a new modular CNN, replacing pooling layers with orthogonal kernel initialisation RNNs coupled with Monte Carlo Dropout (MCD), namely MCoRNNMCD. It combines two modules: i) a convolutional simple RNN and ii) a convolutional Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), where orthogonality and MCD are added to reduce the overfitting, assessing each module's uncertainty. These parallel feature extraction modules concatenate their outputs to a final three-layer Artificial Neural Network (ANN) decision-making module. A comprehensive comparison viewing objective evaluation metrics such as the Mean Square Error (MSE) proved that the proposed MCoRNNMCD-ANN outperformed single CNN, LSTM, GRU, and the state-of-the-art hybrid BiCuDNNLSTM, CLSTM, CNN-LSTM, and LSTM-GRU in forecasting hourly EUR/GBP closing price fluctuations.

The many-body problem in quantum physics originates from the difficulty of describing the non-trivial correlations encoded in the exponential complexity of the many-body wave function. Motivated by the Giuseppe Carleo's work titled solving the quantum many-body problem with artificial neural networks [Science, 2017, 355: 602], we focus on finding the NNQS approximation of the unknown ground state of a given Hamiltonian $H$ in terms of the best relative error and explore the influences of sum, tensor product, local unitary of Hamiltonians on the best relative error. Besides, we illustrate our method with some examples.

Layout estimation is a challenge of segmenting a cluttered room image into floor, walls and ceiling. We applied Double refinement network proved to be efficient in the depth estimation to generate heat maps for room key points and edges. Our method is the first not using encoder-decoder architecture for the room layout estimation. ResNet50 was utilized as a backbone for the network instead of VGG16 commonly used for the task, allowing the network to be more compact and faster. We designed a special layout score function and layout ranking algorithm for key points and edges output. Our method achieved the lowest pixel and corner errors on the LSUN data set. The input image resolution is 224*224.

Artificial neural networks are widely established models of computational intelligence that have been tested for effectiveness in a variety of real-world applications. These models require fitting a set of parameters through the use of some optimization technique. However, an issue that researchers often face is finding an efficient range of values for the parameters of the artificial neural network. This paper proposes an innovative technique of generating a promising range of values for the parameters of the artificial neural network. Finding the value field is done by a series of rules for partitioning the original set of values or expanding it, which rules are generated using Grammatical Evolution. After finding a promising interval of values, any optimization technique such as a genetic algorithm can be used to train the artificial neural network on that interval of values. The new technique was tested on a wide range of problems from the relevant literature and the results were extremely promising.

Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) can provide a great environment for using machine learning algorithm for spatial data such as satellite images. Integrating this functionality with artificial intelligence algorithms for analyzing spatial data enables us to predict challenging disasters such as deforestation. Deforestation as an environmental problems has been recorded the most serious threat to environmental diversity and one of the main components of land-use change. In this paper, we investigate spatial distribution of deforestation using artificial neural networks and satellite imagery. We modeled deforestation process using various factors in determining the relationship between deforestation and environmental and socioeconomic factors. Hence, for this purpose, the proximity to roads and habitats, fragmentation of the forest, height from sea level, slope, and soil type are considered in the model. In this research, we modeled land cover changes (forests) to predict deforestation using an artificial neural network due to its significant potential for the development of nonlinear complex models. The procedure involves image registration and error correction, image classification, preparing deforestation maps, determining layers, and designing a multi-layer neural network to predict deforestation. The satellite images for this study are of a region in Hong Kong which are captured from 2012 to 2016. The results of the study demonstrate that neural networks approach for predicting deforestation can be utilized and its outcomes show the areas that destroyed during the research period.

We propose a neural-network-based watermarking method that introduces the quantized activation function that approximates the quantization of JPEG compression. Many neural-network-based watermarking methods have been proposed. Conventional methods have acquired robustness against various attacks by introducing an attack simulation layer between the embedding network and the extraction network. The quantization process of JPEG compression was replaced by the noise addition process in the attack layer of the conventional methods. In this paper, we propose a quantized activation function that can simulate the JPEG quantization standard as it is in order to improve the robustness against the JPEG compression. Our quantized activation function consists of several hyperbolic tangent functions and is applied as an activation function for neural networks. Our network was introduced in the attack layer of ReDMark proposed by Ahmadi et al. to compare it with their method. That is, the embedding and extraction networks had the same structure. We compared the usual JPEG compressed images and the images applying the quantized activation function. The results showed that a network with quantized activation functions can approximate JPEG compression with high accuracy. We also compared the bit error rate (BER) of estimated watermarks generated by our network with those generated by ReDMark. We found that our network was able to produce estimated watermarks with lower BERs than those of ReDMark. Therefore, our network outperformed the conventional method with respect to image quality and BER.

Deep learning models are part of the family of artificial neural networks and, as such, it suffers of catastrophic interference when they learn sequentially. In addition, most of these models have a rigid architecture which prevents the incremental learning of new classes. To overcome these drawbacks, in this article we propose the Self-Improving Generative Artificial Neural Network (SIGANN), a type of end-to-end Deep Neural Network system which is able to ease the catastrophic forgetting problem when leaning new classes. In this method, we introduce a novelty detection model to automatically detect samples of new classes, moreover an adversarial auto-encoder is used to produce samples of previous classes. This system consists of three main modules: a classifier module implemented using a Deep Convolutional Neural Network, a generator module based on an adversarial autoencoder; and a novelty detection module, implemented using an OpenMax activation function. Using the EMNIST data set, the model was trained incrementally, starting with a small set of classes. The results of the simulation show that SIGANN is able to retain previous knowledge with a gradual forgetfulness for each learning sequence. Moreover, SIGANN can detect new classes that are hidden in the data and, therefore, proceed with incremental class learning.

Speaker recognition methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) have been widely used in the security field and smart wearable devices. However, the traditional CNN has a large number of hyperparameters that are difficult to be determined, which makes the model easy to fall into local optimum or even fail to converge during the training process. Intelligent algorithms such as particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithm are used to solve the above problems. However, these algorithms have poor performance compared with the current emerging meta-heuristic algorithms. In this study, the dung beetle optimized convolution neural network (DBO-CNN) is proposed to identify the speakers, which is helpful in finding suitable hyperparameters for training. By testing the dataset of 50 people, it was demonstrated that the accuracy of the model was significantly improved by using this approach. Compared with the traditional CNN and CNN optimized by other intelligent algorithms, the accuracy of DBO-CNN has increased by 0.6%~4.8%, and reached 98.3%.

Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) are powerful tools specifically suited for problems where data distributions are multi-modal. Inspired by Fourier expansion, we propose a concept called GMM expansion to approximate arbitrary densities. A simple learning method is introduced under this framework. Theoretical and numerical analyses are provided to show that densities under GMM expansion are able to approximate arbitrary densities with certain accuracy. The proposed learning algorithm demonstrates better accuracy and time efficiency compared to classic density approximation methods such as the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm and Bayesian variational inference (BVI) for Gaussian mixture models. The proposed framework also shows better accommodation of neural networks. Three neural network applications are built to demonstrate its usability. The accuracy of density estimation in neural networks is reported to be significantly improved in one of the applications. Another application shows that latent variables can be easily turned into random variables. This user-friendly method opens up more possibilities in terms of latent manipulation, embedding techniques, and many other potential uses.

There is a considerable amount of research in online social networks, most of which focuses on the structural analysis of social graphs. The interpersonal relationships of social networks, especially friend circle, can solve the cold start and sparsity problems, and through the relationship between social networks can effectively recommend users' favorite items (items), such as music , videos, brands/products, preferred tags, location, services, etc. User relationships in social networks are diverse and there are many different perspectives on different social networks. Associations among users can form multi-layered composite networks, and multi-layered social networks present new challenges and opportunities. Different relationships can influence users' preferences to different degrees, which in turn affects their behavior. Therefore, fusing multiple social networks is an effective way to improve recommendation. Although some studies have started to address multiple social network recommendations, simple linear superposition cannot reflect the coupling and nonlinear association between multiple social networks. In this paper, we propose a graph neural network recommendation model under social relationships based on this background. We first propose to compute the 2nd order collaborative signals and their intensities directly from the neighboring matrix for updating the node embedding of the graph convolution layer. Secondly by embedding historical evaluations, various social networks constituting different dimensions, the attention integration of user preferences by different social networks is achieved, and its effectiveness and scalability are demonstrated in theoretical derivation and experimental validation. The theoretical derivation and experimental validation demonstrate its effectiveness and scalability.

We study latching dynamics in the adaptive Potts model network, through numerical simulations with randomly and also weakly correlated patterns, and we focus on comparing its slowly and fast adapting regimes. A measure, Q, is used to quantify the quality of latching in the phase space spanned by the number of Potts states S, the number of connections per Potts unit C and the number of stored memory patterns p. We find narrow regions, or bands in phase space, where distinct pattern retrieval and duration of latching combine to yield the highest values of Q. The bands are confined by the storage capacity curve, for large p, and by the onset of finite latching, for low p. Inside the band, in the slowly adapting regime, we observe complex structured dynamics, with transitions at high crossover between correlated memory patterns; while away from the band latching transitions lose complexity in different ways: below, they are clear-cut but last so few steps as to span a transition matrix between states with few asymmetrical entries and limited entropy; while above, they tend to become random, with large entropy and bi-directional transition frequencies, but indistinguishable from noise. Extrapolating from the simulations, the band appears to scale almost quadratically in the p - S plane, and sublinearly in p - C. In the fast adapting regime the band scales similarly, and it can be made even wider and more robust, but transitions between anti-correlated patterns dominate latching dynamics. This suggest that slow and fast adaptation have to be integrated in a scenario for viable latching in a cortical system. The results for the slowly adapting regime, obtained with randomly correlated patterns, remain valid also for the case with correlated patterns, with just a simple shift in phase space.

Many engineered approaches have been proposed over the years for solving the hard problem of performing indoor localisation using smartphone sensors. However, specialising these solutions for difficult edge cases remains challenging. Here we propose an end-to-end hybrid multimodal deep neural network localisation system, MM-Loc, relying on zero hand-engineered features, learning them automatically from data instead. This is achieved by using modality-specific neural networks to extract preliminary features from each sensing modality, which are then combined by cross-modality neural structures. We show that our choice of modality-specific neural architectures is capable of estimating the location with good accuracy independently. But for better accuracy, a multimodal neural network fusing the features of early modality-specific representations is a better proposition. Our proposed MM-Loc solution is tested on cross-modality samples characterised by different sampling rates and data representation (inertial sensors, magnetic and WiFi signals), outperforming traditional approaches for location estimation. MM-Loc elegantly trains directly from data unlike conventional indoor positioning systems, which rely on human intuition.

The recent worldwide outbreak of the novel corona-virus (COVID-19) opened up new challenges to the research community. Artificial intelligence (AI) driven methods can be useful to predict the parameters, risks, and effects of such an epidemic. Such predictions can be helpful to control and prevent the spread of such diseases. The main challenges of applying AI is the small volume of data and the uncertain nature. Here, we propose a shallow Long short-term memory (LSTM) based neural network to predict the risk category of a country. We have used a Bayesian optimization framework to optimized and automatically design country-specific networks. We have combined the trend data and weather data together for the prediction. The results show that the proposed pipeline outperforms against state-of-the-art methods for 170 countries data and can be a useful tool for such risk categorization. The tool can be used to predict long-duration outbreak of such an epidemic such that we can take preventive steps earlier.

Based on the satellite attitude control method, this paper proposes an attitude control method based on neural network disturbance compensation. The paper firstly analyzes the neural network algorithm and proposes an orthogonal least squares algorithm to implement network learning. In this paper, a set of high-precision directional neural network compensation controllers is designed for the attitude control of acupuncture small satellites. The feasibility of the improved orthogonal least-squared algorithm combined with the neural network supplementary control method in satellite attitude control is verified by experiments.

Tracking temperature changes in certain geographic regions is a current task in modern research on Earth's climate changes. One of the global problems in solving this task is related to the large volume of measured data and the search for appropriate methods for effective determination of changes. The purpose of this research is to track climate temperature changes using a machine learning-based automated change detection method. The presented method includes training of a two-level structure of neural networks, with measured temperatures for a ten-year period of time for a certain geographical region. In the testing phase, the neural structure classifies measured temperatures for two three-year periods, before and after the ten-year time period, respectively, for the same geographic region. An algorithm was developed to visualize the studied regions by creating a map with their geographic coordinates. The classification results in the neural structure outputs are presented and analyzed as possible temperature changes. Suggestions for continuing and expanding the research in the future are discussed.

Neural-objective and image optimization approaches for drilling fluid rheology automation are crucial for drilling engineering optimization. A myriad of intelligent computational models are employed to predict and monitor the parameters of mud rheology and filter cake permeability posture using an artificial neural network feedforward (ANN-FF) function, a non-ANN-FF function, an image processing tool, and a model optimization tool. 498 datasets of synthetic-based mud (SBM) flat rheology from a drilling mud laboratory at Nazarbayev University were imported into a user-friendly MATLAB application using image processing and nftool. Apart from the Google TensorFlow Sequential API DNN architecture used, a Levenberg-Marquardt training algorithm with input sigmoid hidden neurons 10, 12, and 18 coupled with a linear output layer was also used to predict the SBM flow index. OBM and SBM filter cakes were processed for void spaces; however, a model study was extrapolated to maximize filtration volume Vf. The study’s findings show that the ANN-FF model employed for rheological property monitoring and prediction had higher steady and exponential levels of accuracy and a correlation coefficient of 0.96-0.99. More so, SBM and OBM image processing presented an area of void spaces of 1790M2 and 1739M2, respectively. The porosity and permeability postures of both SBM and OBM resulted in a significant void space capable of maximizing the flow index. In addition, the single-objective modelling based on a genetic algorithm did validate the experimental rheological data for flow index or filtration volume Vf optimization; the study resulted in the finding that the constrained physics-informed objective function hindered maximizing oil recovery and instead predicted possible formation damage. It is empirical to note that automating flow predictions with neural, objective, and image functions has presented an alternative novel method for non-programmers using MATLAB and Google Colabs that is capable of enhancing mud rheological parameters, drilling efficiency, and hydrocarbon recovery.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by the demyelination of neural fibers in the central nervous system. Understanding the impact of demyelination on neural network efficiency is crucial for elucidating the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying MS. This study aims to model the effects of demyelination on neural network efficiency, specifically focusing on how increased resistance and path lengths due to demyelination correlate with the clinical symptoms of MS. We employed a graph-theoretical approach to simulate neural networks, introducing varying degrees of demyelination. The demyelination was represented by increasing the resistance (weights) of selected edges within the network, affecting both random and clustered distributions of network connections. The primary metric analyzed was the average shortest path length, indicative of network efficiency. The models demonstrated a significant increase in the average shortest path length in demyelinated networks compared to intact ones. Specifically, networks with clustered demyelination exhibited localized inefficiencies, correlating with the focal nature of MS lesions. The increase in path length was associated with reduced signal transmission efficiency, providing insights into a range of MS symptoms including motor and sensory impairments, cognitive dysfunction, visual disturbances, and fatigue. The graph-theoretical model of neural network demyelination offers a novel perspective on how structural changes in the brain's connectivity due to MS can lead to diverse clinical manifestations. While the model simplifies the complexity of neural networks, it underscores the potential of computational approaches in understanding and predicting the course of neurological disorders like MS.

Convolutional neural network (CNN), a class of artificial neural network (ANN) is attracting interests of researchers in all research domain. CNN was invented for computer vision. They have also shown to be useful for semantic parsing, sentence modeling and other natural language processing related tasks. Here in this paper we discuss the basics of CNN models and their scope to provide a reference/baseline to the researchers interested in using CNN models in their research.

Blasting pattern optimization is an attempt to optimize blast design parameters aiming to achieve optimum fragmentation, reduce mining operating costs as well as environmental side consequences. The present study aims to propose a multi-objective optimization model, employing artificial intelligence and metaheuristics, to simultaneously minimize the mine-to-crusher operating costs and the impact of blasting consequences including fly-rock and back-break. To achieve the purpose of the study, a multi-variable regression model was developed to model total costs from drilling to crushing. In addition to the costs, multilayer perception neural networks were implemented to predict the blast-induced back-break and fly-rock as a function of collected variables such as number of holes, hole length, burden, spacing, hole slope, stemming, blasted rock per hole, powder factor, and charge per delay. High-precise estimations for both back-break and fly-rock were achieved with the average of 99% coefficient of determination for train, test and validation data sets. Then, the developed regression model and the neural networks were used in an optimization framework, employing Grasshopper algorithm, to find the optimum blast design satisfying practical constraints. The proposed model was tested on a lead-zinc open-pit mine, where 1032 blasting patterns were recorded and analyzed. The results of the optimization model provide a Pareto set of solutions, such that any of these solutions can be implemented according to the strategy of the mining operation management team. The blast pattern with the lowest cost, result in a relatively high fly-rock and back-break, while the pattern with low fly-rock and back-break raises the cost by 20.13 % compared the minimum cost blast design.

Artificial intelligence technologies based on deep convolutional neural networks and large lan-guage models have made significant breakthroughs in many tasks such as image recognition, target detection, semantic segmentation and natural language processing, but also face the problem of contradiction between the high computational capacity of the algorithms and the limited deployment resources. Quantization, which converts floating-point neural networks into low-bit-width integer networks, is an important and essential technique for efficient deploy-ment and cost reduction in edge computing. This paper analyze various existing quantization methods, showcase the deployment accuracy of advanced techniques, and discuss the future challenges and trends in this domain.

With the increase of the Artificial Neural Network (ANN), machine learning has taken a forceful twist in recent times. One of the most spectacular kinds of ANN design is the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a technology that mixes artificial neural networks and up to date deep learning strategies. In deep learning, Convolutional Neural Network is at the center of spectacular advances. This artificial neural network has been applied to several image recognition tasks for decades and attracted the eye of the researchers of the many countries in recent years as the CNN has shown promising performances in several computer vision and machine learning tasks. This paper describes the underlying architecture and various applications of Convolutional Neural Network.

An appearance model plays a crucial rule in multi-target tracking. In traditional approaches, the two steps of appearance modeling i.e visual representation and statistically similarity measure are modeled separately. Visual representation is achieved either through hand-crafted features or deep features and statically similarity is measure through a cross entropy loss function. A loss function based on cross-entropy (KL-divergence, mutual information) find closely related probability distribution for the targets. However, if the targets have similar visual representation, it ends up mixing the targets. To tackle this problem, we come up with a synergetic appearance model named Single Shot Appearance Model based on Siamese neural network. The network is trained with a contrastive loss function for finding the similarity between different targets in a single shot. The input to the network is two target patches and based on their similarity, a contrastive score is output by the network. The proposed model is evaluated on accumulative dissimilarity metric on three datasets. Quantitatively, promising results are achieved against three baseline methods.

Applications of gradient method for nonlinear optimization in development of Gradient Neural Network (GNN) and Zhang Neural Network (ZNN) are investigated. Particularly, the solution of the matrix equation AXB=D which changes over time is studied using the novel GNN model, termed as GGNN(A,B,D). The GGNN model is developed applying GNN dynamics on the gradient of the error matrix used in the development of the GNN model. The convergence analysis shows that the neural state matrix of the GGNN(A,B,D) design converges asymptotically to the solution of the matrix equation AXB=D, for any initial state matrix. It is also shown that the convergence result is the least square solution which is defined depending on the selected initial matrix. A hybridization of GGNN with analogous modification GZNN of the ZNN dynamics is considered. The Simulink implementation of presented GGNN models is carried out on the set of real matrices.

It is important to reduce the computation complexity while maintaining the accuracy of convolution neural networks. We deem it is possible to further reduce the network complexity while ensuring the accuracy. In this paper, we propose a novel feature extraction network called DSRNet which is lightweight but effective. DSRNet follows the basic ideas of stacking modules and short connection, introduces Depthwise Separable convolution and utilizes the Dilated convolution. The proposed network has fewer parameters and achieves outstanding speed. We conducted comprehensive experiments on CIFAR10, CIFAR100 and STL10 datasets, and the results showed the DSRNet has great performance improvement in terms of accuracy and speed.

The application of artificial intelligence to point-of-care testing (POCT) disease detection has become a hot research field, in which breath detection which detects the patient's exhaled VOCs combined with sensor arrays of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithms as a new lung cancer detection is attracting more researchers' attention. However, due to low accuracy, high complexity computation and large number of parameters make the CNN algorithms difficult transplant to the embedded system of POCT devices. A lightweight neural network (LTNet) in this work is proposed to deal with this problem, and meanwhile, achieve high-precision classification of acetone and ethanol gases, which are respiratory markers for lung cancer patients. Compared to currently popular lightweight CNN models such as EfficientNet, LTNet has fewer parameters (32K) and its training weight size is only 0.155 MB. LTNet achieved an overall classification accuracy of 99.06% and 99.14% in the own mixed gas dataset and the University of California (UCI) dataset, which are both higher than that of the five existing models’, and it also offers the shortest training (844.38s and 584.67s) and inference time (23s and 14s) in the same validation set. Compared to the existing CNN models, LTNet is more suitable for resource-limited POCT devices.

Wastewater (WW) analysis is a critical step in various operations such as control of a WW treatment facility, and speeding-up the analysis of WW quality can significantly improve such operations. This work demonstrates the capability of neural network (NN) regression models to estimate WW characteristic properties such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia (NH3-N), total dissolved substances (TDS), total alkalinity (TA), and total hardness (TH) by training on WW spectral reflectance in the visible to near-infrared spectrum (400nm-2000nm). The dataset contains samples of spectral reflectance intensity, which were the inputs, and the WW parameter levels (BOD, COD, NH3-N, TDS, TA, and TH), which were the outputs. Various NN model configurations were evaluated in terms of regression model fitness. The mean-absolute-error (MAE) was used as the metric for training and testing the NN models, and the coefficient of determination (R2) between the model predictions and true values was also computed to measure how well the NN models predict the true values. With online spectral measurements, the trained neural network model can provide non-contact and real-time estimation of WW quality at minimum estimation error.

In recent years, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have won numerous contests in pattern recognition, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The basic unit of an ANN is to mimic neurons in the brain. Neuron in ANNs is expressed as f (wx+b) or f (wx). This structure does not consider the information processing capabilities of dendrites. However, recently, studies shown that dendrites participate in pre-calculation in the brain. Concretely, biological dendrites play a role in the pre-processing to the interaction information of input data. Therefore, it is time to perfect the neuron of the neural network. This paper, add dendrite processing section, presents a novel artificial neuron, according to our previous studies (CR-PNN or Gang transform). The dendrite processing section can be expressed as . Because I perfected the basic unit of ANNs— neuron, there are so many networks to try. This article gives the basic architecture for reference in future research.

Topology optimization is a pioneering design method that can provide various candidates with high mechanical properties. However, the high-resolution for the optimum structures is highly desired, normally in turn leading to computationally intractable puzzle, especially for the famous Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) method. In this paper, an efficient and high-resolution topology optimization method is proposed based on the Super-Resolution Convolutional Neural Network (SRCNN) technique in the framework of SIMP. The SRCNN includes four processes, i.e. refining, path extraction & representation, non-linear mapping, and reconstruction. The high computational efficiency is achieved by a pooling strategy, which can balance the number of finite element analysis (FEA) and the output mesh in optimization process. To further reduce the high computational cost of 3D topology optimization problems, a combined treatment method using 2D SRCNN is built as another speeding-up strategy. A number of typical examples justify that the high-resolution topology optimization method adopting SRCNN has excellent applicability and high efficiency for 2D and 3D problems with arbitrary boundary conditions, any design domain shape, and varied load.

With the rapid developments that have been made in computer vision and computer technology, semantic segmentation of high-resolution images has emerged as a mainstream and challenging task. The, segmentation of water areas remains a complex task due to the similar features between water areas or between water areas and other land objects. Meanwhile, since coastlines and riverbanks are typically presented in irregular shapes, it is difficult to obtain the categories of pixels at boundaries. This paper proposed the use of a Water-Land Boundary Attention Network (WLBANet) to improve the accuracy of pixels at boundaries between water and land. This network also reinforced the performance of contextual information extraction into distinguishing between water areas and other land objects. To prove the validity of this proposed network, WLBANet was performed on the Water Land Dataset (WLD), which is also by this paper, and which contains water areas and other land objects categories. The results demonstrates that the proposed method has significant effectiveness.

Abstract：The brain often switches freely between focused attention and divergent thinking, and the default mode network (DMN) is activated during brain rest. The discovery, function and characteristics of default mode network all indicate that learning does not stop when the brain "rests". Mental disease can lead to dysfunctional default mode networks, which affects learning adversely. Therefore, default mode network plays an important role in learning. Neural activities such as β-wave rhythm regulation, "subconscious" divergence mode initiation, hippocampal function and neural replay occur during default mode, which also explain that "rest" promotes learning. This paper reveals the role and neural mechanism of default mode network in learning from the neural level, discusses the essential role default mode network plays in learning, and default mode network enables rest to promote learning.

For years, effort has been devoted to establishing an effective bull breeding soundness evaluation procedure; usual research on the subject is based on BBSE (Bull Breeding Soundness Examination) methodologies, which have significant limitations in terms of their evaluation procedure, such as high cost, time-consuming and administratively difficult. This research focuses on the creation of a prediction model to supplement and/or improve the BBSE approach, through the study of two algorithms, Clustering and Artificial Neural Network (ANN), to find the optimum Machine Learning (ML) approach for our application, with an emphasis on data categorization accuracy. The tool is designed to assist veterinary medicine and farmers in identifying key factors and increasing certainty in their decision-making during the selection of bulls for breeding purposes, providing data from a limited number of factors generated from a deep pairing study of bulls. Zebu Bulls, European Bulls, and Crossbred Bulls were the general groupings. The data utilized in the model's creation (N =359) considers five variables that influence improvement decisions. This approach enhances decision-making by 12%. ANN obtained an accuracy of 90%; Precision was 97% for satisfying, 92% for unsatisfying, and 85% for Bad.

Motivated by the way animals react in nature, we introduce a fully-connected neural-network model, which incorporates the external pattern presented to the system as a fundamental tool of the recognition process. In this new scenario, in the absence of this external field, memories are not attractors inside basins of attraction, as in usual attractor neural networks, although basins may be created according to the external pattern, thus allowing storing a much larger number of memories. The key point consists in calibrating the influence of the external pattern such as to cancel the noise generated by those memories not correlated with the external pattern.We illustrate how this proposal works by including this new contribution in the standard Hopfield model, showing a significant increase in its recognition capacity (typically by a factor $10^{2}$). As an additional feature of this model, we show its ability to react promptly to changes in the external environment, a crucial attribute of living beings. This procedure can be applied to a wide variety of neural-network models to increase considerably their recognition and reaction capabilities.

Significant progress has made in pattern recognition technology. However, one obstacle that has not yet overcome is the recognition of words in the Brahmi script, specifically the identification of characters, compound characters, and word. This study proposes the use of the deep convolutional neural network with dropout to recognize the Brahmi words. This study also proposed a DCNN for Brahmi word recognition and a series of experiments are performed on standard Brahmi dataset. The practical operation of this method was systematically tested on accessible Brahmi image database, achieving 92.47% recognition rate by CNN with dropout respectively which is among the best while comparing with the ones reported in the literature for the same task.

Abstract: It has been shown that three-dimensional self-assembled multicellular structures derived from human pluripotent stem cells show electrical activity similar to EEG. More recently, neurons were successfully embedded in a digital game-worlds (Kagan, et al. 2022). The biologically inspired neural network (BNN), expressing human cortical cells, was able to show internal modification and learn the task at hand (predicting the trajectory of a digital ball while moving a digital paddle). In other words, the system allowed to read motor information and write sensory data into cell cultures. In this article, we discuss Neural Correlates of Consciousness (NCC) theories, and their capacity to predict or even allow for consciousness in a BNN. We found that In-formation Integration Theory (IIT) is the only NCC that offers the possibility for a BNN to show consciousness. IIT argues that any system capable of integrating information will have some degree of phenomenal consciousness. The pattern of activity appearing in the BNN, with increased density of sensory information leading to better performance, implies that the BNN could be conscious. This may have profound implications from a physiological, philosophical, and ethical perspective.

Effectively avoiding gas accident is vital to the security of mineral manufacture, and the coal mine gas accident is often caused by gas concentration overrun. The prediction accuracy of gas emission quantity in coal mine is the key to solve this problem. To maintain concentration of gas in a secure range，grey theory and neural network model increasingly diffusely used in forecasting gas emission quantity in coal mine critically. Nevertheless, the limitation of the grey neural network model is that researchers merely bonded the conventional neural network and grey theory. To enhance accuracy of prediction, a modified grey GM(1,1) and RBF neural network model is proposed combined amended grey GM(1,1) model and RBF neural network model. Then the proposed model was put into simulation experiment which is built based on Matlab software. Ultimately, conclusion of the simulation experiment verified that the modified grey GM(1,1) and RBF neural network model not only boosts the precision of prediction, but also restricts relative error in a minimum range. This showed that the modified grey GM(1,1) and RBF neural network model achieves effectiveness in precision of prediction much better than grey GM(1,1) model and RBF neural network model.

Capability assessment plays a crucial role in the demonstration and construction of equipment. To improve the accuracy and stability of capability assessment, we study the neural network learning algorithms in the field of capability assessment and index sensitivity. Aiming at the problem of over-fitting and parameter optimization in neural network learning, the paper proposes an improved machine learning algorithm—the Ensemble Learning Based on Policy Optimization Neural Networks (ELPONN) algorithm with the policy optimization and ensemble learning. This algorithm presents optimized neural network learning algorithm through different strategies evolution, and builds an ensemble learning model of multi-intelligent algorithms to assessment the capability and analyze the sensitivity of the indexes. Through the assessment of capabilities, the algorithm effectively avoids parameter optimization from entering the minimum point in performance to improve the accuracy of equipment capability assessment, which is significantly better than previous neural network assessment methods. The experimental results show that the mean relative error is 4.10%, which is better than BP, GABP, and early stopping. The ELPONN algorithm has better accuracy and stability performance, and meets the requirements of capability assessment.

This article presents a novel computational approach to visualizing memristor dynamics within a simulated neural network. Memristors, known for their ability to emulate synaptic plasticity due to their variable resistance characteristics, are key components in neuromorphic computing and hold potential for advancing our understanding of neural processes. Our study introduces a sophisticated memristor model that incorporates non-linear resistance changes, simulating the complex behavior of synaptic connections in a neural network.The neural network, consisting of multiple interconnected neurons with memristor-based synapses, is subjected to a series of electrical stimuli. Each memristor's resistance is modulated in response to the applied voltage, mimicking the synaptic weight adjustments that occur during learning and memory formation in biological neural networks. To effectively illustrate these changes, we employ a high-contrast color mapping scheme, where the varying resistance of each memristor is represented by distinct colors, providing a clear and intuitive visualization of synaptic modifications over time.Our simulation runs through multiple iterations, demonstrating how synaptic weights evolve in response to different input patterns. The use of an extended voltage range and increased scaling factors ensures pronounced changes in memristance, enhancing the visibility of synaptic adaptations. The resulting visualizations offer a compelling representation of how memristors can mimic the dynamic nature of biological synapses, contributing to the field of neuromorphic engineering and deepening our comprehension of neural mechanisms underlying learning and memory.This work not only showcases the potential of memristors in simulating neural behavior but also provides a valuable educational tool for illustrating complex concepts in neuroscience and neuromorphic computing. The insights gained from this study pave the way for further exploration into the development of advanced neural network models and the design of memristor-based computing systems.

Aimed for the difficulty and complexity of detecting the piston error for segmented telescope, this paper proposed a new piston error measurement method based on a hybrid artificial neural net-work. Firstly, we use Resnet network to learn the mapping relationship between the focal plane degradation image and the signs of the piston error. Then, based on the established theoretical re-lationship between modulation transfer function and the piston error, BP neural network is used here to learn the mapping relationship between the MTF and the absolute value of the piston error. After the training of the hybrid network is completed, a wide-range and high-precision detection of the piston error of the sub-mirrors can be achieved using the combined output of the two net-works only a focal plane image of a point source with broadband illumination is used as input. The detection range can reach the whole coherent length of the input broadband light, and the detec-tion accuracy can reach 10nm. The method proposed in this paper has the advantages of high de-tection accuracy, wide detection range, low hardware cost, small network scale and low training difficult.

In this study, we explore the potential of using a straightforward neural network inspired by the retina model to efficiently restore low-light images. The retina model imitates the neurophysiological principles and dynamics of various optical neurons. Our proposed neural network model reduces the computational overhead compared to traditional signal-processing models while achieving results similar to complex deep learning models from a subjective perceptual perspective. By directly simulating retinal neuron functionalities with neural networks, we not only avoid manual parameter optimization but also lay the groundwork for constructing artificial versions of specific neurobiological organizations.

A scalable optical convolutional neural network (SOCNN) based on free-space optics and Koehler illumination was proposed to address the limitations of the previous 4f correlator system. Unlike Abbe illumination, Koehler illumination provides more uniform illumination and reduces crosstalk. SOCNN allows for scaling up of the input array and the use of incoherent light sources. Hence, the problems associated with 4f correlator systems can be avoided. We analyzed the limitations in scaling the kernel size and parallel throughput and found that SOCNN can offer a multilayer convolutional neural network with massive optical parallelism.

To address the challenge of recognizing ship states accurately amidst the complexities of marine environments, this study proposes a novel ship state recognition approach leveraging a graph convolutional neural network (GCNN). Initially, the method extracts canonical and efficient ship motion trajectories from AIS data. Subsequently, a state recognition network tailored for ship motion trajectories is devised and implemented employing graph convolution. Notably, the accuracy of this model is enhanced through the introduction of novel weights and optimization of the Adj parameter. Experimental evaluations conducted on a ship state dataset demonstrate significant performance improvements. Specifically, the proposed recognition network achieves a recognition accuracy of 98.3% for regulated ship trajectories, marking an impressive 8.4% enhancement over traditional convolutional neural networks. This advancement holds promise for enhancing ship state recognition accuracy across diverse maritime applications including maritime supervision, navigation safety, and ship management.

Mechanical equipment is composed of several parts, the interaction between the parts exists throughout whole life cycle leads to the widespread phenomenon of fault coupling and the diagnosis of independent faults cannot meet the requirements of the health management of mechanical equipment under actual working conditions. In this paper, the topological structure of graph neural network is used to describe the correlation of coupling faults and multiple fault types are regarded as network nodes respectively. The fault features are fused and extracted by graph convolution to achieve the classification of coupling faults. In this paper, dynamic vertexes are defined in data topology and the parameters of DIGNN classification model are optimized by changing the fault type of dynamic vertexes during training stage. The data is loaded into dynamic vertexes for classification and analysis during testing stage. The one-dimensional vibration data is converted into two-dimensional time-frequency domain data by wavelet transform making the input features of the model interpretable to reduce the uncertainty of model training. The data topology is then fed into DIGNN for fault classification, and GCN's node aggregation gives interpretability to each layer of network data processing. The method proposed in this paper can realize accurate diagnosis of independent faults on the data set, and can effectively judge the coupling mode of coupling faults, which is suitable for coupling fault analysis of mechanical equipment.

Camouflage evaluation typically involves human visual search and detection experiments that are time-consuming and expensive. Hence, there is a need for models that compute camouflage effectiveness from digital imagery. Convolutional neural networks are a powerful tool for automatic object detection and recognition. We investigated whether such a network (YOLO) can also provide a measure of camouflage effectiveness that is related to human perception. To this end, human performance measures of camouflage effectiveness such as detection time and target conspicuity were obtained in observer experiments and compared with the performance of the (standard, i.e. pre-trained) YOLO-V4-tiny algorithm. YOLO provides the probability that a detected object is correctly classified, and this is adopted as our measure of camouflage effectiveness. We compared the YOLO-predicted classification probability for a person in camouflage clothing moving through rural and urban scenes to human detection performance. Overall, camouflage effectiveness predicted by YOLO correlates with human observer performance. At close distances, YOLO’s classification performance appears sensitive to high-contrast shape-breaking elements of a camouflage pattern. This suggests that YOLO may be adapted to assess camouflage effectiveness for a wide range of applications, such as evaluating or optimizing one’s signature and predicting optimal hiding locations in a given environment. Further research is required to fully establish YOLO’s limitations and applicability for this purpose.

In videos, the human's actions are of three-dimensional (3D) signals. These videos investigate the spatiotemporal knowledge of human behavior. The promising ability is investigated using 3D convolution neural networks (CNNs). The 3D CNNs have not yet achieved high output for their well-established two-dimensional (2D) equivalents in still photographs. Board 3D Convolutional Memory and Spatiotemporal fusion face training difficulty preventing 3D CNN from accomplishing remarkable evaluation. In this paper, we implement Hybrid Deep Learning Architecture that combines STIP and 3D CNN features to enhance the performance of 3D videos effectively. After implementation, the more detailed and deeper charting for training in each circle of space-time fusion. The training model further enhances the results after handling complicated evaluations of models. The video classification model is used in this implemented model. Intelligent 3D Network Protocol for Multimedia Data Classification using Deep Learning is introduced to further understand space-time association in human endeavors. In the implementation of the result, the well-known dataset, i.e., UCF101 to, evaluates the performance of the proposed hybrid technique. The results beat the proposed hybrid technique that substantially beats the initial 3D CNNs. The results are compared with state-of-the-art frameworks from literature for action recognition on UCF101 with an accuracy of 95%.

Seawater density is an important physical property in oceanography that affects the accuracy of calculations such as gravity fields and tidal potentials, and the calibration of acoustic and optical oceanographic sensors. In related studies, constant density values are frequently used, which can introduce significant errors. Therefore, this study employs a basic convolutional neural network model to construct a comprehensive model showing the seawater density distribution across the globe. The model takes into account depth, latitude, longitude, and month as inputs. Numerous real seawater datasets were used to train the model, and it has been shown that the model has an absolute mean error and root mean square error of less than 2 kg/m3 in 99% of the test set samples. The model effectively demonstrates the influence of input parameters on the distribution of seawater density. In this paper, we present a newly developed global model for distributing seawater density which is both comprehensive and accurate, surpassing previous models. The utilization of the model presented in this paper for estimating seawater density can minimize errors in theoretical ocean models and serve as a foundation for designing and analyzing ocean exploration systems.

The monocular structured light measurement system has low cost, simple algorithms, and a wide measurement range, making it widely applicable in multiple fields. However, in practical applications, the system may be affected by various factors including noise, non-linear intensity, changes in the reflectivity of the object being measured, and the calibration method and accuracy of the system, thereby reducing the measurement accuracy. In order to solve these issues, this paper proposes a new monocular structured light measurement method, mainly comprises the following two points: (a) A denoising algorithm for phase images based on DAE is proposed, which calculates the wrapped phase of the phase-shifted fringes after initial denoising by DAE. Then, a new phase-shifted fringe pattern is generated and input into DAE for iterative denoising, achieving high-performance image denoising and high-precision wrapped phase solution. (b) A new absolute phase height calibration algorithm is proposed, which introduces camera internal and external parameters and uses a two-layer feedforward network to directly establish the relationship between phase and the 3D coordinate system. Without the need for high-precision motion platforms, high-precision phase height calibration is attainable. In general, compared to conventional methods, the experimental results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed method for low-quality phase-shifted fringe 3D reconstruction. In addition, the measurement method described in this article also demonstrates effectiveness in high-dynamic scenes.

Facial emotion detection is a challenging task that deals with emotion recognition. It has applications in various domains, such as behavior analysis, surveillance systems and human-computer interaction (HCI). Numerous studies have been implemented to detect emotions, including classical machine learning algorithms and advanced deep learning algorithms. For the machine learning algorithm, the hand-crafted feature needs to be extracted, which is a tiring task and requires human effort. Whereas in deep learning models, automated feature extraction is employed from samples. Therefore, in this study, we have proposed a novel and efficient deep learning model based on Neural Architecture Search Network utilizing superior artificial networks such as RNN and child networks. We performed the training utilizing the FER 2013 dataset comprising seven classes: happy, angry, neutral, sad, surprise, fear, and disgust. Furthermore, we analyzed the robustness of the proposed model on CK+ datasets and comparing with existing techniques. Due to the implication of reinforcement learning in the network, most representative features are extracted from the sample network. It extracts all key features without losing the key information. Our proposed model is based on one stage classifier and performs efficient classification. Our technique outperformed the existing models attaining an accuracy of 98.14%, recall of 97.57%, and precision of 97.84%.

This paper is a review of the biological-inspired spiking neural network and its applications in different areas. The author aims to present a brief introduction to SNN, which incorporates the mathematical structure, applications, and implementation of SNN. This paper also represents an overview of machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning. This review paper can help advanced artificial intelligence researchers to get a compact brief intuition of spiking neural networks.

The diffusion of molecules in aqueous solutions in the domain of membrane technology is very critical in the efficiency of chemical engineering and purification processes. In this study, the diffusion in high and low concentration regions is simulated with finite difference method (FDM), and then the results of numerical computations are coupled with adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and bilayered neural network method (BNNM). Machine learning approach can individually predict diffusion phenomena across the domain based on understanding of the machine instead of the discretization of an ordinary differential equation (ODE). The findings of the machine learning method are in good agreement with those of FDM at different times of the simulation. In addition to numerical computation, the error of the system is computed for different iterations. The results show that by increasing the number of iterations and training datasets, all errors reduce significantly for both training and testing. BNN method is also used to train the prediction process of diffusion for a more accurate comparison. This technique is similar to ANFIS method in terms of prediction capability. According to the findings, ANFIS approach predicts diffusion slightly better than BNN method. In this regard, ANFIS technique produces R>0.99 while BNN method produces R around 0.98. Both machine learning methods are accurate enough to predict diffusion throughout the domain for different time steps. The computational time for both algorithms is less than that of FDM method to predict low and high concentrations in the domain. Besides, based on the results, artificial intelligence (AI) can find the relationship between inputs and outputs and determine which input has the main influence on the output in this study to optimize the process. As such, future studies can be focused on AI and other methods for faster prediction and optimization processes.

This article presents new PEM fuel cell models with hexagonal and pentagonal designs. After observing cell performance improvement in these models, we optimized them. Inlet pressure and temperature were used as input parameters, and consumption and output power were the target parameters of the multi-objective optimization algorithm. Then we used artificial intelligence techniques, including deep neural networks and polynomial regression, to model the data. Next, we employed the RSM (Response Surface Method) method to derive the target functions. Furthermore, we applied the NSGA-II multi-objective genetic algorithm to optimize the targets. Compared to the base model (Cubic), the optimized Pentagonal and Hexagonal models averagely increase the output current density by 21.819\% and 39.931\%, respectively.

Accurately mapping individual tree species in densely forested environments is crucial to forest inventory. When considering only RGB images, this is a challenging task for many automatic photogrammetry processes. The main reason for that is the spectral similarity between species in RGB scenes, which can be a hindrance for most automatic methods. State-of-the-art deep learning methods could be capable of identifying tree species with an attractive cost, accuracy, and computational load in RGB images. This paper presents a deep learning-based approach to detect an important multi-use species of palm trees (Mauritia flexuosa; i.e., Buriti) on aerial RGB imagery. In South-America, this palm tree is essential for many indigenous and local communities because of its characteristics. The species is also a valuable indicator of water resources, which comes as a benefit for mapping its location. The method is based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to identify and geolocate singular tree species in a high-complexity forest environment, and considers the likelihood of every pixel in the image to be recognized as a possible tree by implementing a confidence map feature extraction. This study compares the performance of the proposed method against state-of-the-art object detection networks. For this, images from a dataset composed of 1,394 airborne scenes, where 5,334 palm-trees were manually labeled, were used. The results returned a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.75 trees and an F1-measure of 86.9%. These results are better than both Faster R-CNN and RetinaNet considering equal experiment conditions. The proposed network provided fast solutions to detect the palm trees, with a delivered image detection of 0.073 seconds and a standard deviation of 0.002 using the GPU. In conclusion, the method presented is efficient to deal with a high-density forest scenario and can accurately map the location of single species like the M flexuosa palm tree and may be useful for future frameworks.

Activated sludge process is a well known method to treat municipal and industrial waste water. In this complex process, the oxygen concentration in the reactors plays a critical role in the plant efficiency. This paper proposes the use of a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network to identify an input-output model suitable for the design of an oxygen concentration controller. The model is identified from easy-accessible measures collected from a real plant. This dataset covers almost a month. The performances achieved with the proposed LSTM model are compared with the ones obtained with a standard AutoRegressive model with eXogenous input (ARX). Both models catch the oscillation and the overall behaviour (ARX ρ=0.833 , LSTM ρ=0.921), but, while the ARX model fails in reaching the correct amplitude (FIT=41.20%), the LSTM presents satisfactory performance (FIT=60.56%).

The diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma has always been a concerned and challenging issue and it is very important and meaningful to have a definite diagnosis before the operation. In this study, we tried to use an artificial intelligence algorithm instead of medical statistics to analyze the genetic fingerprint from gene chip results to identify papillary thyroid carcinoma. We trained 20 artificial neural network models with differential genes and other important genes related to the cell metabolic cycle as the list of input features, and apply them to the diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer in the independent validation data set. The results showed that when we used the DEGs and all genes lists as input features the models got the best diagnostic performance with AUC=98.97% and 99.37% and the accuracy were both 96%. This study revealed that the proposed artificial neural network models constructed with genetic fingerprints could achieve a prediction of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Such models can support clinicians to make more accurate clinical diagnoses. At the same time, it provides a novel idea for the application of artificial intelligence in clinical medicine.

Recent neuroscience research results show that the nerve information in the brain is not only encoded by the spatial information. Spiking neural network based on pulse frequency coding plays a very important role in dealing with the problem of brain signal, especially complicated space-time information. In this paper, an unsupervised learning algorithm for bilayer feedforward spiking neural networks based on spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP) competitiveness is proposed and applied to SAR image classification on MSTAR for the first time. The SNN learns autonomously from the input value without any labeled signal and the overall classification accuracy of SAR targets reached 80.8%. The experimental results show that the algorithm adopts the synaptic neurons and network structure with stronger biological rationality, and has the ability to classify targets on SAR image. Meanwhile, the feature map extraction ability of neurons is visualized by the generative property of SNN, which is a beneficial attempt to apply the brain-like neural network into SAR image interpretation.

Calligraphy works have high artistic value, but there is a rampant problem of forgery. Indeed, authentication of traditional calligraphy heavily relies on calligraphers' subjective judgment. Therefore, spurred by the recent development of neural networks, this paper proposes a method for authenticating calligraphy works based on an improved EfficientNet network. Specifically, the developed method utilizes the character box algorithm and the centroid algorithm to extract individual calligraphy characters, which are then augmented and used as the training set for the model. The training process employs CBAM and Self-Attention modules to enhance the attention mechanism of the EfficientNet network. The model is tested on authentic works, imitated works, and works from other calligraphers and is compared with other networks. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively achieves the authentication of calligraphy works, and the improved CBAM-EfficientNet network and SA-EfficientNet network achieve better authentication performance.

Artificial neural networks are highly efficient tools for numerous kinds of tasks, which include forecasting, regression, and recognizing patterns in classification and pattern recognition. An artificial neural network is a model for processing information using essential components called artificial neurons that are inspired by the human brain. Two significant aspects of delayed neural networks dynamic activity are their stability and the synchronization phenomenon. This work presents a bidirectional associative memory (BAM) incommensurate fractional-order delay neural network model. The incommensurate fractional orders are calculated within the stability region through the corresponding eigenvalues and their points of equilibrium. The involved neuron states are synchronized with each other for the calculated incommensurate stable fractional orders. The reduction of the time delay will give more relaxation time for the state variable $w_4(t)$ to be stable as compared to the state variable $w_3(t)$ due to the induction of extra activation functions. The theoretical findings of this research have significance for providing guidance and controlling the dynamic behavior of artificial neural networks.

The prediction of hydrological flows (rainfall-depth or rainfall-discharge) is becoming increasingly important in the management of hydrological risks such as floods. In this study, the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network, a state-of-the-art algorithm dedicated to time series, is applied to predict the daily water level of lake Nokoue in Benin. This paper aims to provide an effective and reliable method enable of reproducing the future daily water level of Lake Nokoue, which is influenced by a combination of two phenomena: rainfall and river flow (runoff from the Ouémé River, the Sô River, the Porto-Novo lagoon, and the Atlantic Ocean). Performance analysis based on the forecasting horizon indicates that LSTM can predict the water level of Nokoué Lake up to a forecast horizon of t+10 days. Performance metrics such as Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), coefficient of correlation (R²), Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE), and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) agree on a forecast horizon of up to t+3 days. The values of these metrics remain stable for forecast horizons of t+1 days, t+2 days, and t+3 days. The values of R² and NSE are greater than 0.97 during the training and testing phases in the Nokoué Lake basin. Based on the evaluation indices used to assess the model's performance for the appropriate forecast horizon of water level in the Nokoué lake basin, the forecast horizon of t+3 days is chosen for predicting future daily water levels.

Identification of plants is a challenging task which aims to identify the family, genus, and species level according to morphological features. Automated deep learning-based computer vision algorithms are widely used for identifying plants and can help users to narrow down the possibilities. However, numerous morphological similarities between and within species make the classification difficult. In this paper, we tested a custom convolution neural network (CNN) and vision transformer (ViT) based models using the PyTorch framework to classify plants. We used a large dataset of 88K and 16K images for classifying plants at genus and species levels respectively. Our results show that for classifying plants at the genus level, ViT models perform better compared to CNN-based models ResNet50 and ResNet-RS-420, and other state-of-the-art CNN-based models suggested in previous studies on a similar dataset. The ViT model achieved top accuracy of 83.3% for classifying plants at the genus level. ViT models also perform better for classifying plants at the species level compared to CNN-based models ResNet50 and ResNet-RS-420, with a top accuracy of 92.5%. We show that the correct set of augmentation techniques plays an important role in classification success.

Online transactions are becoming more popular in present situation where the globe is facing an unknown disease COVID-19. Now authorities of Countries requested peoples to use cashless transaction as far as possible. Practically it is not always possible to use it in all transactions. Since number of such cashless transactions have been increasing during lockdown period due to COVID-19, fraudulent transactions are also increasing in a rapid way. Fraud can be analysed by viewing a series of customer transactions data that was done in his/her previous transactions. Normally banks or other transaction authorities warned their customers about the transaction If any deviation is noticed by them from available patterns. These authorities think that it is possibly of fraudulent transaction. For detection of fraud during COVID-19, banks and credit card companies are applying various methods such as data mining , decision tree, rule based mining, neural network, fuzzy clustering approach and machine learning methods. These approaches is try to find out normal usage pattern of customers based on their past activities. The objective of this paper is to find out such fraud transactions during such unmanageable situation.Digital payment schemes are often threatened by fraudulent activities. Detecting fraud transaction in during money transfer may save customers from financial loss. Mobile based money transactions are focused in this paper for fraud detection. A Deep Learning (DL) framework is suggested in this paper that monitors and detects fraudulent activities. Implementing and applying recurrent neural network on PaySim generated synthetic financial dataset, deceptive transactions are identified. The proposed method is capable to detect deceptive transactions with an accuracy of 99.87%, F1-Score of 0.99 and MSE of 0.01.

Online and offline shopping trip have different impacts on various aspects of urban life, such as e-commerce, transportation systems, and sustainability. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the factors that influence their choices. We use a hybrid machine learning model that combines a gray wolf optimization algorithm and a deep convolutional neural network to estimate shopping trip based on a survey of 1,000 active e-commerce users who made successful orders in both online and offline services in the last 20 days of 2021 in areas 2 and 5 of Tehran. The gray wolf optimization algorithm performs feature selection and hyperparameter tuning for the deep convolutional neural network, which is a powerful deep learning model for image recognition and classification. The results show that our model achieves an accuracy of 97.81% with an MSE of 0.325 by selecting seven out of ten features. The most important features are delivery cost, delivery time, product price, car ownership. In addition, comparing the performance of the proposed method with other methods showed that the proposed algorithm with an accuracy of 97.81%, the accuracies of the single deep learning model, MLP neural network, decision tree, and KNN models were 95.63%, 90.0%, 86.49%, and 80.16%, respectively.

Myocarditis is the form of an inflammation of the middle layer of the heart wall which is caused by a viral infection and can affect the heart muscle and its electrical system. It has remained as one of the most challenging diagnoses in cardiology. Myocardial is the prime cause of unexpected death in approximately 20% of adults less than 40 years of age. Cardiac MRI (CMR) has been considered as a noninvasive and golden standard diagnostic tool for suspected myocarditis and plays an indispensable role in diagnosing various cardiac diseases. However, the performance of CMR is heavily dependent on the clinical presentation and non-specific features such as chest pain, arrhythmia, and heart failure. Besides, other imaging factors like artifacts, technical errors, pulse sequence, acquisition parameters, contrast agent dose, and more importantly qualitatively visual interpretation can affect the result of the diagnosis. This paper introduces a new deep learning-based model called Convolutional Neural Network-Clustering (CNN-KCL) to diagnose the Myocarditis. The hybrid CNN-KCL method performs the early and accurate diagnosis of Myocarditis. To the best-of-our-knowledge, a Convolutional neural network has never been used before for the diagnosis of Myocarditis. In this study, we used 47 subjects to diagnose myocarditis patients from Tehran's Omid Hospital. The total number of data examined is 10425. Our results demonstrate that CNN-KCL achieves 92.3% in terms of diagnosis myocarditis prediction accuracy which is significantly better than those reported in previous studies.

This paper focuses on quantifying the uncertainty in the specific absorption rate values of brain induced by the uncertain positions of the electroencephalography electrodes placed on patient's scalp. To avoid running a large number of simulations, an artificial neural network architecture for uncertainty quantification involving high-dimensional data is proposed in this paper. The proposed method is demonstrated to be an attractive alternative to conventional uncertainty quantification methods because of its considerable advantage in the computational expense and speed.

Transfer learning has proven to be a valuable technique for deploying machine learning models on edge devices and embedded systems. By leveraging pre-trained models and fine-tuning them on specific tasks, practitioners can effectively adapt existing models to the constraints and requirements of their application. In the process of adapting an existing model, a practitioner may make adjustments to the model architecture, including the input layers, output layers, and intermediate layers. In this study, we examine the effects of these adjustments on the runtime and energy performance of an edge processor performing inferences. Based on our observations, we make recommendations for how to adjust convolutional neural networks during transfer learning to maintain runtime performance. We observe that the Edge TPU is generally more efficient than a CPU at performing inferences on convolutional neural networks, and continues to outperform a CPU as the depth and width of the convolutional network increases. We explore multiple strategies for adjusting the input and output layers of an existing model and demonstrate important performance cliffs for practitioners to consider when modifying a convolutional neural network model.

Link prediction is to complete the missing links in the network or to predict the generation of new links according to the current network structure information, which is very important for mining and analyzing the evolution of the network such for construction and analysis of logical architecture in 6G network. Link prediction algorithms based on node similarity need predefined similarity functions, which is highly hypothetical and only applies to specific network structures without generality. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a link prediction algorithm based on the subgraph of the target node pair. In order to automatically learn the graph structure characteristics, the algorithm firstly extracts the h-hop subgraph of the target node pair, and then predicts whether the target node pair will be linked according to the subgraph. Experiments on seven real data sets show that the link prediction algorithm based on target node pair subgraph is suitable for various network structures and superior to other link prediction algorithms.

With the development of deep learning technology, various structures and research methods for super-resolution restoration of natural images and document images have been introduced. In particular, a number of recent studies have been conducted and developed in image restoration using generative adversarial network. Super-resolution restoration is ill-posed problem because of some complex restraints such as a lot of high-resolution images being restored for the same low-resolution image and also difficulty in restoring noises like edges, light smudging, and blurring. In this study, we utilized the spatially adaptive de-normalization (SPADE) structure for document image restoration to solve previous problems such as edge unclearness, hardness to catch features of texts, and the image color transition. Consequently, it can be confirmed that the edge of the character and the ambiguous stroke are restored more clearly when contrasting with the other previously suggested methods. Also, the proposed method’s PSNR and SSIM scores are geting 8% and 15% higher, respectively, compared to the previous methods.

In this work we present the results obtained with an artificial neural network (ANN) which we trained to predict the expected output of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) process, while exploring a multi-dimensional parameter space. We argue on the utility and efficiency of the ANN model and demonstrate its ability to predict the outcome of HHG simulations. In this case study we present the results for a loose focusing HHG beamline, where the changing parameters are: the laser pulse energy, gas pressure, gas cell position relative to focus and gas cell length. The physical quantity which we predict here using ANN is directly related to the total harmonic yield in a specified spectral domain (20-40 eV). We discuss the versatility and adaptability of the presented method.

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) promise to perform tasks currently done by classical artificial neural networks (ANNs) faster, in smaller footprints and using less energy. Neuromorphic processors are set out to revolutionize computing at a large scale, but the move to edge-computing applications calls for finely-tuned custom implementations to keep pushing towards more efficient systems. To that end, we have examined the architectural design space for executing spiking neuron models on FPGA platforms, focusing on achieving ultra-low area and power consumption. This work presents an efficient clock-driven spiking neuron architecture used for the implementation of both fully-connected cores and 2D convolutional cores, which rely on deep pipelines for synaptic processing and distributed memory for weight and neuron states. With them, we have developed an accelerator for an SNN version of the LeNet-5 network trained on the MNIST dataset. At around 5.5 slices/neuron and only 348 mW, it is able to use 33% less area and 4 times as less power per neuron as current state-of-the-art implementations while keeping low simulation step times.

Evolutionary algorithms find applicability in reinforcement learning of neural networks due to their independence from gradient-based methods. To achieve successful training of neural networks using evolutionary algorithms, careful considerations must be made to select appropriate algorithms due to the availability of various algorithmic variations. In Part1 and Part2, the author previously reported experimental evaluations on Genetic Algorithm and Evolution Strategy for reinforcement learning of neural networks, utilizing the Acrobot control task. This article constitutes Part3 of the series of comparative research. In this study, Differential Evolution is adopted as the third instance of major evolutionary algorithms. The experimental results show a statistically significant superiority of DE over both GA and ES (p < .01). In addition, DE exhibits its robustness to variations in hyperparameter configurations (the number of offsprings and generations). In the previous experiments, both ES and GA showed significant performance differences depending on the configurations, whereas in the experiment reported in this article, such differences are not detected for DE.

Experimental results demonstrate that there was no statistically significant difference between the experimental performances of GA and ES, but the priority of generations and offsprings was different; GA performed better with a greater number of generations while ES performed better with a greater number of offsprings. Eight hidden units were the best among four variations (4, 8, 16 or 32 units), which aligns with previous study using ES.

The author previously reported experimental evaluations on Evolution Strategy for reinforcement learning of neural networks, utilizing the pendulum control task. In this study, the Acrobot control task is adopted as another task. Experimental results demonstrate that ES successfully trained a Multi-Layer Perceptron to achieve a remarkable height of 99.85% concerning the maximum height. However, the trained MLP failed to maintain the chain end in an upright position throughout an episode. In this study, it was observed that employing 8 hidden units in the neural network yielded better results with statistical significance compared to using 4, 16, or 32 hidden units. Furthermore, the findings indicate that a larger population size in ES led to a more extensive exploration of potential solutions over a greater number of generations, which aligns with the previous study.

Currently, foam mixers are predominantly categorized into two types: low-pressure and high-pressure. Low-pressure mixers primarily use agitator rotation to mix materials. However, they face challenges such as difficulty in cleaning and complex structures. High-pressure mixers, widely adopted for their structural simplicity and lack of need for cleaning devices, effectively mitigate issues associated with low-pressure mixers. Nonetheless, they encounter problems with uneven mixing when processing high-viscosity materials. Historically, the primary solution to this issue was increasing the working pressure. However, the capacity to increase pressure is finite, and higher pressure demands higher quality materials for the mixers. To address the issues high-pressure mixers face when dealing with high-viscosity materials, this study focuses on the polyimide high-pressure mixer. After reviewing previous studies, four design variables were selected: the mixer's impingement angle, inlet diameter, outlet diameter, and impingement pressure. Using a Full Factorial Design of Experiments (DOE), the significance of the impact exerted by these four variables on Mixing Unevenness was analyzed, determining the extent of their influence. Optimal Latin Hypercube Sampling generated several random sample points, followed by the establishment of both a Back Propagation (BP) Neural Network approximation model and a Kriging approximation model. A Genetic Algorithm was then applied to optimize these two approximation models, resulting in the optimal combination of design variables. The research findings indicate that the BP Neural Network exhibits higher predictive accuracy compared to the Kriging prediction model. The optimal combination of parameters, optimized through the Genetic Algorithm (GA), reduced the Mixing Unevenness by 69.1%, effectively decreasing the Mixing Unevenness of the mixer head.

Lung cancer is known as lung carcinoma. It is a disease which is malignant tumor leading to the uncontrolled cell growth in the lung tissue. Lung Cancer disease is one of the most prominent cause of death in all over world. Early detection of this disease can assist medical care unit as well as physicians to provide counter measures to the patients. The objective of this paper is to approach an automated tool that takes influential causes of lung cancer as input and detect patients with higher probabilities of being affected by this disease. A neural network classifier accompanied by cross-validation technique is proposed in this paper as a predictive tool. Later, this proposed method is compared with another baseline classifier Gradient Boosting Classifier in order to justify the prediction performance.

An application of deep convolutional neural network and recurrence plot for financial market movement prediction is presented. Though it is challenging and subjective to interpret its information, the pattern formed by a recurrence plot provide a useful insight into the dy- namical system. We used a recurrence plot of seven financial time series to train a deep neural network for financial market movement predic- tion. Our approach is tested on our dataset and achieved an average of 53.25% classification accuracy. The result suggests that a well trained deep convolutional neural network can learn a recurrence plot and pre- dict a financial market direction.

Autonomous mobile robots are essential to the industry, and human-robot interactions are becoming more common nowadays. These interactions require that the robots navigate scenarios with static and dynamic obstacles in a safely manner, avoiding collisions. This paper presents a physical implementation of a method for dynamic obstacle avoidance using a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network that obtains information from the mobile robot’s LiDAR for it to be capable of navigating through scenarios with static and dynamic obstacles while avoiding collisions and reaching its goal. The model is implemented using a TurtleBot3 mobile robot within an OptiTrack Motion Capture (MoCap) system for obtaining its position at any given time. The user operates the robot through these scenarios, recording its LiDAR readings, target point, position inside the MoCap system, and its linear and angular velocities, all of which serve as the input for the LSTM network. The model is trained on data from multiple user-operated trajectories across five different scenarios, outputting the linear and angular velocities for the mobile robot. Physical experiments prove that the model is successful in allowing the mobile robot to reach the target point in each scenario while avoiding the dynamic obstacle, with a validation accuracy of 98.02%.
