Intracortical microelectrodes that can be implanted have the ability to capture fast-changing neuron action potentials in the living brain. Despite this potential, many obstacles must still be overcome for reliable, long-term, high-quality recordings and accurate analysis of brain activity. These challenges include improving recording quality, enhancing recording stability, increasing recording capacity, and adding multi-functional features. One potential approach to enhance implantable microelectrodes involves the advancement of materials, refinement of implantation methodologies, and augmentation of the number of sites for recording. However, these challenges are still being actively researched, and advancements in microelectrode technology are underway. The difficulties with implantable microelectrodes are evaluated, and solutions are presented from different perspectives. The latest advancements in microelectrode technology are reviewed and condensed, and future possibilities are explored.

The paper presents a study of two novel visual motion onset stimulus-based brain–computer interfaces (vmoBCI). Two settings are compared with afferent and efferent to a computer screen center motion patterns. Online vmoBCI experiments are conducted in an oddball event–related potential (ERP) paradigm allowing for “aha–responses” decoding in EEG brainwaves. A subsequent stepwise linear discriminant analysis classification (swLDA) classification accuracy comparison is discussed based on two inter–stimulus–interval (ISI) settings of 700 and 150 ms in two online vmoBCI applications with six and eight command settings. A research hypothesis of classification accuracy non–significant differences with various ISIs is confirmed based on the two settings of 700 ms and 150 ms, as well as with various numbers of ERP response averaging scenarios.The efferent in respect to display center visual motion patterns allowed for a faster interfacing and thus they are recommended as more suitable for the no–eye–movements requiring visual BCIs.

This paper offers a comprehensive analysis of medical-oriented BCI applications by exploring the various uses of BCI technology and its potential to transform patient care.

Objective A trained T1 class Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model will be used to examine its ability to successfully identify motor imagery when fed pre-processed electroencephalography (EEG) data. In theory, and if the model has been trained accurately, it should be able to identify a class and label it accordingly. The CNN model will then be restored and used to try and identify the same class of motor imagery data using much smaller sampled data in an attempt to simulate live data. Approach PyCharm, a Python platform, will be used to house and process the CNN. The raw data used for the training of the CNN will be sourced from the PhysioBank website. The EEG signal data will then be pre-processed using Brainstorm software that is a toolbox used in conjunction with MATLAB. The sample data used to validate and test the trained CNN, will be also be extracted from Brainstorm but in a much smaller size compared to the training data which is comprised of thousands of images. The sample size would be comparable to a person wearing a Brain Computer Interface (BCI), offering approximately 20 seconds of motor imagery signal data. Results The raw EEG data was successfully extracted and pre-processed. The deep learning model was trained using the extracted image data along with their corresponding labels. After training, it was able to accurately identify the T1 class label at 100 percent. The python coding was then modified to restore the trained model and feed it test sample data in which it was found to recognise 6 out of 10 lines of T1 signal image data. The result suggested that the initial training of the model required a different, more varying approach, so that it would be able to detect varying sample signal image data. The outcome of which could mean that the model could be used in applications for multiple patients wearing the same BCI hardware to control a device or interface.

Objective: Design and validate a wireless, low-cost, easy-to-use, mobile, dry-electrode headset for scalp electroencephalography (EEG) recordings for closed-loop brain-computer (BCI) interface and internet-of-things (IoT) applications. Approach: The EEG-based BCI headset was designed from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components using a multi-pronged approach that balanced interoperability, cost, portability, usability, form factor, reliability, and closed-loop operation. Main Results: The adjustable headset was designed to accommodate 90\% of the population. A patent-pending self-positioning dry electrode bracket allowed for vertical self-positioning while parting the user's hair to ensure contact of the electrode with the scalp. In the current prototype, five EEG electrodes were incorporated in the electrode bracket spanning the sensorimotor cortices bilaterally, and three skin sensors were included to measure eye movement and blinks. An accelerometer provides monitoring of head movements. The EEG amplifier operates with 24 bits resolution up to 500 Hz sampling frequency, and can communicate with other devices using 802.11 {b/g/n/WiFi}. It has high SNR and CMRR (121 dB and 110 dB, respectively), and low input noise. In closed-loop BCI mode, the system can operate at 40 Hz, including real-time adaptive noise cancellation and 512 MB of processor memory. It supports LabVIEW as backend coding language and JS, CSS, HTML as front-end coding languages, and includes training and optimization of Support Vector Machine (SVM) neural classifiers. Extensive bench testing supports the technical specifications and human subject pilot testing of a closed-loop BCI application to support upper-limb rehabilitation provides proof-of-concept validation for device use at both the clinic and at home. Significance: The low-cost, accessibility, usability, interoperability, and programmability of the proposed closed-loop BCI system provides a low-cost solution for BCI and neurorehabilitation research and IoT applications.

The present study illustrates a brain-computer interface designed and developed to be wearable, portable, and user-friendly. Eight dry electroencephalographic sensors were adopted to acquire the brain activity associated with motor imagery. Multimodal feedback in extended reality was exploited to improve the detection of neurological phenomena. Twenty-seven healthy subjects used the proposed system in five sessions to investigate the effects of feedback on motor imagery. The sample was divided into two equal-sized groups: the "neurofeedback" group, which performed motor imagery while receiving feedback, and the "control" group, which performed motor imagery with no feedback. Several questionnaires were administrated to participants aiming to investigate the usability of the proposed system and individual’s ability to imagine movements. The highest mean classification accuracy across subjects of control group was about 62 % with 3 % associated type A uncertainty, and 69 % with 3 % uncertainty for neurofeedback group. Moreover, in some cases the results were significantly higher for the neurofeedback group. The perceived usability by all participants was high. Overall, the study highlights the advantages and the pitfalls of using a wearable brain-computer interface with dry sensors. Notably, the results and the perceived usability pave the way for the employment of the proposed system in tele-rehabilitation.

Cognitive deterioration caused by illness or aging often occurs before symptoms arise, and their timely diagnosis is crucial to reducing its medical, personal, and societal impacts. Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) stimulate and analyze key cerebral rhythms, enabling reliable cognitive assessment that can accelerate diagnosis. The BCI system presented analyzes Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEPs) elicited in subjects of varying age to detect cognitive aging, predict its magnitude, and identify its relationship with SSVEP features (band power and frequency detection accuracy), which were hypothesized to indicate cognitive decline due to aging. The BCI system was tested with subjects of varying age to assess its ability to detect aging-induced cognitive deterioration. Rectangular stimuli flickering at theta, alpha, and beta frequencies were presented to subjects, and frontal and occipital EEG responses were recorded. These were processed to calculate detection accuracy for each subject and calculate SSVEP band power. A neural network was trained using the features to predict cognitive age. The results showed potential cognitive deterioration through age-related variations in SSVEP features. Frequency detection accuracy declined after age group 20–40 and band power, throughout all age groups. SSVEPs generated at theta and alpha frequencies, especially 7.5 Hz, were the best indicators of cognitive deterioration. Here, frequency detection accuracy consistently declined after age group 20-40 from an average of 96.64% to 69.23%. The presented system can be used as an effective diagnosis tool for age related cognitive decline.

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) systems can assist physically challenged people to interact with their surroundings and improve the quality of their lives. Decoding human thoughts is a powerful technique that can assist paralyzed people who have lost their speech production ability. Speaking is a combined process involving synchronizing the brain and the oral articulators. This paper proposed a high-accuracy brain wave pattern recognition based on inner speech using a novel feature extraction method. Only eight EEG electrodes were used in this study, and they were set on selected spots on the scalp. Support Vector Machine (SVM) was employed to decode the recorded EEG dataset into four internally spoken words which are: Up, Down, Left, and Right. The proposed approach achieved overall classification accuracy that ranges between 96.20% to 97.5%. In addition, more performance evaluation metrics were estimated to test the reliability of classifying the EEG-based inner speech data, and we obtained 97.61%, 97.50%, and 97.73% for F1-score, recall, and precision respectively. Furthermore, the Area Under Curve of the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUC-ROC) proved the strength of the proposed approach for classifying the specified inner speech commands by achieving a macro-average amount of 99.32%. The inner speech classification method using electroencephalography proposed in this work can clinically help improve communication for patients with problems including speech disorder, mutism, cognitive development, executive function, and psychopathology.

This paper proposes several LabVIEW applications to accomplish the data acquisition, processing, features extraction and real-time classification of the electroencephalographic (EEG) signal detected by the embedded sensor of the NeuroSky Mindwave Mobile headset. The LabVIEW applications are aimed at the implementation of a Brain-Computer Interface system, which is necessary to people with neuromotor disabilities. It is analyzed a novel approach regarding the preparation and automatic generation of the EEG dataset by identifying the most relevant multiple mixtures between selected EEG rhythms (both time and frequency domains of raw signal, delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma) and extracted statistical features (mean, median, standard deviation, route mean square, Kurtosis coefficient and others). The acquired raw EEG signal is processed and segmented into temporal sequences corresponding to the detection of the multiple voluntary eye-blinks EEG patterns. The main LabVIEW application accomplished the optimal real-time artificial neural networks techniques for the classification of the EEG temporal sequences corresponding to the four states: 0 - No Eye-Blink Detected; 1 - One Eye-Blink Detected; 2 – Two Eye-Blinks Detected and 3 – Three Eye-Blinks Detected. Nevertheless, the application can be used to classify other EEG patterns corresponding to different cognitive tasks, since the whole functionality and working principle could estimate the labels associated with various classes.

Recent progress in microfabrication technique allowed the rapid development of neural implants. They are getting categorized as effective tools for clinical practice, especially to treat traumatic and neurodegenerative disorders. Microelectrode arrays already have been used in numerous neural interface devices. Basically, almost all neural implants have been developed based on BCI (Brain Computer Interface) system. When BCI system falls under invasive technique, it is referred as BMI or Brain Machine Interface. BMIs hold promises for neurorehabilitation of motor and sensory function, cognitive state evaluation and treatment of neurological chaos. A directed overview of the field of neural implants is discussed in this article. The aim of this review is to give a brief introduction of neural prosthetics as well as their exciting applications in treating neurological disorders and a deep discussion on their functionality are mentioned. BCI system and their different types, their functionality, their pros and cons, how other neural implants developed, and their present status have been covered. Different possibilities and possible future of deep brain stimulation (DBS), Neuralink, motor and sensory neural prosthetics are further discussed.

It includes the electroencephalography device needed to acquire signals associated to the brain activity, the algorithms for artefact reduction and event classification, and the communication protocol.

The question of what generates conscious experience has mesmerized thinkers since the dawn of humanity, yet its origins remain a mystery. The topic of consciousness has gained traction in recent years, thanks to the development of large language models that now arguably pass the Turing test, an operational test for intelligence. However, intelligence and consciousness are not related in obvious ways, as anyone who suffers from a bad toothache can attest - pain generates intense feelings and absorbs all our conscious awareness yet nothing particularly intelligent is going on. Still, in the hard sciences, this topic is frequently met with skepticism because to date no protocol to measure the content or intensity of conscious experiences in an observer-independent manner has been agreed upon. Here we present a novel proposal: Conscious experience arises whenever a quantum mechanical superposition forms. Our proposal has several implications: First, it suggests that the structure of the superposition determines the qualia of the experience. Second, quantum entanglement naturally solves the binding problem, ensuring the unity of phenomenal experience. Finally, a moment of agency may coincide with the formation of a superposition state. We outline a research program to experimentally test our conjecture via a sequence of quantum biology experiments. Applying these ideas opens up the possibility of expanding human experience through brain-quantum computer interfaces.

Selection is a fundamental interaction element in Virtual Reality (VR) and 3D user interfaces (UIs). Raycasting, one of the most common object selection techniques, has been known to have difficulties in selecting small or distant objects. Meanwhile, recent advancements in computer vision technology have enabled seamless vision-based hand tracking in consumer VR headsets, enhancing accessibility to freehand mid-air interaction and highlighting the need for further research in this area. This study proposed a new technique called TouchView which utilizes a virtual panel with a modern adaptation of the Through-the-lens metaphor to improve freehand selection for VR UI. TouchView enables faster and less demanding target selection by allowing direct touch interaction with the magnified object proxies reflected on the panel view. Repeated-measures ANOVA on the results of a follow-up user experiment on multitarget selection with 23 participants showed that TouchView outperformed the current market-dominating freehand raycasting technique, Hybrid Ray in terms of task performance, perceived workload, and preference. The user behavior was also analyzed to understand the underlying reasons for these improvements. The proposed technique can be used in VR UI applications to enhance the selection of distant objects, especially for cases with frequent view shifts.

The purpose of this study is to ​​explore the use of a custom Transformer model in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that translate the neural activity present when an individual with limited verbal and fine-motor skills attempts to handwrite. As found in previous studies, Transformers have performed better than recurrent neural networks (RNNs) in translation tasks which are similar to its usage here in decoding neural signals into intended handwritten text. Due to the known benefits of a Transformer, the hypothesis was that the Transformer would show promise in the context of a BCI through the recorded metrics. The neural signals of a tetraplegic individual, when they attempted to handwrite, were provided by existing research. Four trials were conducted using data with or without augmentation which the model used when training to separately minimize training loss and validation loss. When comparing the results of a BCI with the implementation of a Transformer model with the original RNN BCI (the original data source), the Transformer model performed less favorably across all four trials. Although the results do not indicate that the Transformer model currently outperforms an RNN BCI, it is important to note that further testing of the model's capabilities (such as training it with a larger and more preferable dataset and/or for longer, comparing training times between the RNN and Transformer, and/or seeing how the Transformer is improved with an offline autocorrect feature) is necessary before determining whether Transformers can enhance communication in this manner.

A single paragraph of about 200 words maximum. Electroencephalography (EEG) accumulates the electrical activities of human brain. It is an easy and cost effective tool to characterize motor imagery (MI) task used in brain computer interface (BCI) implementation. The MI task is represented by short time trial of multichannel EEG. In this paper, the raw EEG is decomposed into a finite set of narrowband signals obtained from individual EEG channels using Fourier transformation based bandpass filter. Each of the subband signals represents narrowband rhythmic components which characterize the brain activities related to motor imagery. The subband signals are arranged to extent the dimension of EEG trial in spatial domain. The spatial features are extracted from the set of extended trials using common spatial pattern (CSP). An optimum number of features are used to classify the motor imagery tasks represented by EEG trials. Artificial neural network is used to classify MI tasks. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using two publicly available benchmark datasets. The experimental results show that it performs better than the recently developed algorithms.

In the last decades, the automatic recognition and interpretation of brain waves acquired by electroencephalographic (EEG) technologies have undergone remarkable growth, leading to a consequent rapid development of Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs). EEG-based BCIs are non-invasive systems that allow communication between a human being and an external device interpreting brain activity directly. Thanks to the advances in neurotechnologies, and especially in the field of wearable devices, BCIs are now also employed outside medical and clinical applications. Within this context, this paper proposes a systematic review of EEG-based BCIs, focusing on one of the most promising paradigms based on Motor Imagery (MI) and limiting the analysis to applications that adopt wearable devices. This review aims to evaluate the maturity levels of these systems, both from the technological and computational points of view. The selection of papers has been performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), leading to 84 publications considered in the last ten years (from 2012 to 2022). Besides technological and computational aspects, this review also aims at systematically list experimental paradigms and available datasets in order to identify benchmarks and guidelines for the development of new applications and computational models.

Motor imagery(MI)-based Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) have shown increased potential for the rehabilitation of stroke patients; nonetheless, their implementation in clinical practice has been restricted due to their low accuracy performance. To date, although a lot of research has been made in benchmarking and highlighting the most valuable classification algorithms in BCI configurations, most of them are using offline data and not from real BCI performance during the closed-loop (or online) sessions. Since rehabilitation training relies on the availability of an accurate feedback system, we surveyed articles of current and past EEG-based BCI frameworks who report the online classification of the movement of two upper limbs in both healthy volunteers and stroke patients. We found that the recently developed Deep Learning methods do not outperform the traditional machine learning algorithms. In addition, patients and healthy subjects exhibit similar classification accuracy in current BCI configurations. Lastly, in terms of neurofeedback modality, Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) yielded the best performance compared to non-FES systems.

The feasibility of a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) brain-computer interface (BCI) with a single flicker stimulus for multiple-target decoding has been demonstrated in a number of recent studies. The single-flicker BCIs have mainly employed the direction information for encoding the targets, i.e. different targets are placed at different spatial directions relative to the flicker stimulus. The present study explored whether visual eccentricity information can also be used to encode target for the purpose of increasing the number of targets in the single-flicker BCIs. A total number of 16 targets were encoded, placed at eight spatial directions, and two eccentricities (2.5° and 5°) relative to a 12 Hz flicker stimulus. Whereas distinct SSVEP topographies were elicited when participants gazed at targets of different directions, targets of different eccentricities were mainly represented by different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Using a canonical correlation analysis-based classification algorithm, simultaneous decoding of both direction and eccentricity information was achieved, with an average offline 16-class accuracy of 66.8±16.4% averaged over 12 participants and a best individual accuracy of 90.0%. Our results demonstrate a single-flicker BCI with a substantially increased target number towards practical applications.

In Brain-Computer Interface Motor Imagery (BCI-MI) systems, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have traditionally dominated as the deep learning method of choice, demonstrating significant advancements in state-of-the-art studies. Recently, Transformer models with attention mechanisms have emerged as a sophisticated technique, enhancing the capture of long-term dependencies and intricate feature relationships in BCI-MI. This research investigates the performance of EEG-TCNet and EEG-Conformer models, which are trained and validated using various hyperparameters and bandpass filters during preprocessing to assess improvements in model accuracy. Additionally, this study introduces the EEG-TCNTransformer, a novel model that integrates the convolutional architecture of EEG-TCNet with a series of self-attention blocks employing a multi-head structure. The EEG-TCNTransformer achieves an accuracy of 82.97% without the application of bandpass filtering. The source code of EEG-TCNTransformer is available on GitHub.

Motor intention is a high-level brain function related to planning for movement. Although studies have shown that motor intentions can be decoded from brain signals before movement execution, it was unclear whether intentions relating to mental imagery of movement could be decoded. Here, we investigated whether differences in spatial and temporal patterns of brain activation were elicited by intentions to perform different types of motor imagery and whether the patterns could be used by a multivariate pattern classifier to detect such differential intentions. The results showed that it is possible to decode intentions before the onset of different types of motor imagery from functional MR signals obtained from fronto-parietal brain regions, such as the premotor cortex and posterior parietal cortex, while controlling for eye movements and for muscular activity of the hands. These results highlight the critical role played by the aforementioned brain regions in covert motor intentions. Moreover, they have substantial implications for rehabilitating patients with motor disabilities.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) from electroencephalography (EEG) provide a practical approach to support human-technology interaction. In particular, motor imagery (MI) is a widely-used BCI paradigm that guides the mental trial of motor tasks without physical movement. Here, we present a deep learning methodology, named Kernel-based Regularized EEGNet (KREEGNet), leveled on Centered Kernel Alignment and Gaussian Functional Connectivity, explicitly designed for EEG-based MI classification. The approach proactively tackles the challenge of intra-subject variability brought on by noisy EEG records and the lack of spatial interpretability within end-to-end frameworks applied for MI classification. KREEGNet is a refinement of the widely accepted EEGNet architecture, featuring an additional kernel-based layer for regularized Gaussian functional connectivity estimation based on CKA. The superiority of KREEGNet is evidenced by our experimental results from binary and multi-class MI classification databases, outperforming the baseline EEGNet and other state-of-the-art methods. Further exploration of our model’s interpretability is conducted at individual and group levels, utilizing classification performance measures and pruned functional connectivities. Our approach is a suitable alternative for interpretable end-to-end EEG-BCI based on deep learning.

Functional connectivity (FC) is a potential candidate that can increase the performance of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) in the elderly because of its compensatory role in neural circuits. However, it is difficult to decode FC by current machine learning techniques because of a lack of its physiological understanding. To investigate the suitability of FC in BCI for the elderly, we propose the decoding of lower- and higher-order FCs using a convolutional neural network (CNN) in six cognitive-motor tasks. The layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP) method describes how age-related changes in FCs impact BCI applications for the elderly compared to younger adults. Seventeen younger (24.5±2.7 years) and twelve older (72.5±3.2 years) adults were recruited to perform tasks related to hand-force control with or without mental calculation. CNN yielded a six-class classification accuracy of 75.3% in the elderly, exceeding the 70.7% accuracy for the younger adults. In the elderly, the proposed method increases the classification accuracy by 88.3% compared to the filter-bank common spatial pattern (FBCSP). LRP results revealed that both lower- and higher-order FCs were dominantly overactivated in the prefrontal lobe depending on task type. These findings suggest a promising application of multi-order FC with deep learning on BCI systems for the elderly.

This work promotes new methods in Mathematical Modeling, consisting in the use of the methods of Non-standard Analysis in Topoi, having as its main purpose, the mathematical definitions of the pseudoparticles from the title, with arguments from Biology/Physiology (Mathematical Neuroscience), Physics (String Theory and Emergent Quantum Mechanics), and Cybernetics (Global Brain, including Natural and Artificial Intelligence). The connections between brain and mind will be scketched via the genetic/epigenetic interplay. The topoi model the intuitionistic logic (multi-valued) and have been used in Quantum Physics while Non-Standard Analysis in SET (= the Category of sets) has been applied in Mathematical Economics; topics from Theory of Categories were also used in the study of Consciousness; however, the combination topoi - non-standard analysis was never used until now in Applied Mathematics. Another important objective is to produce progress in this aria of Pure Mathematics also - the build of non-standard analysis in classes of topoi, already used in Physics. We propose the logic of non-standard extensions in topoi as a model of the human thinking (based on infons/receptons), these theories representing new top and very difficult results in Abstract Mathematics either.

Cognitive impairment is a condition which affects aging patient populations and is becoming more prevalent as the geriatric population expands. It is categorized by the extent of cognitive decline, memory loss, functional abilities, and the capability to perform daily tasks. Based on the degree of impairment, it is classified as mild cognitive impairment or dementia. Considering the debilitating nature of cognitive decline and its impact on quality of life, prevention is key. In addition, given the gradual progression of the underlying causes of cognitive decline, early diagnosis and appropriate management has the potential to offer clinical advantages and better patient outcomes. Management options discussed vary from pharmaceutical regimens to neurosurgical interventions, with differing outcomes based on etiology of cognitive impairment.

In this paper, we propose an imagined speech-based brain wave pattern recognition using deep learning. Multiple features were extracted concurrently from eight-channel Electroencephalography (EEG) signals. To obtain classifiable EEG data with fewer number of sensors, we placed the EEG sensors on carefully selected spots on the scalp. To decrease the dimensions and complexity of the EEG dataset and to avoid overfitting during the deep learning algorithm, we utilized the wavelet scattering transformation. A low-cost 8-channel EEG headset was used with MATLAB 2023a to acquire the EEG data. The Long-Short Term Memory Recurrent Neural Network (LSTM-RNN) was used to decode the identified EEG signals into four audio commands: Up, Down, Left, and Right. Wavelet scattering transformation was applied to extract the most stable features by passing the EEG dataset through a series of filtration processes. Filtration has been implemented for each individual command in the EEG datasets. The proposed imagined speech-based brain wave pattern recognition approach achieved a 92.50% overall classification accuracy. This accuracy is promising for designing a trustworthy imagined speech-based Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) future real-time systems. For better evaluation of the classification performance, other metrics were considered, and we obtained 92.74%, 92.50% and 92.62% for precision, recall, and F1-score, respectively.

Non-invasive, electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) on motor imagery movements translate the subject’s motor intention into control signals through classifying the EEG patterns caused by different imagination tasks, e.g. hand movements. This type of BCI has been widely studied and used as an alternative mode of communication and environmental control for disabled patients, such as those suffering from a brainstem stroke or a spinal cord injury (SCI). Notwithstanding the success of traditional machine learning methods in classifying EEG signals, these methods still rely on hand-crafted features. The extraction of such features is a difficult task due to the high non-stationarity of EEG signals, which is a major cause for the stagnating progress in classification performance. Remarkable advances in deep learning methods allow end-to-end learning without any feature engineering, which could benefit BCI motor imagery applications. We developed three deep learning models: 1) a long short-term memory (LSTM); 2) a proposed spectrogram-based convolutional neural network model (pCNN); and 3) a recurrent convolutional neural network (RCNN), for decoding motor imagery movements directly from raw EEG signals without (manual) feature engineering. Results were evaluated on our own, publicly available, EEG data collected from 20 subjects and on an existing dataset known as 2b EEG dataset from "BCI Competition IV". Overall, better classification performance was achieved with deep learning models compared to state-of-the art machine learning techniques, which could chart a route ahead for developing new robust techniques for EEG signal decoding. We underpin this point by demonstrating the successful real-time control of a robotic arm using our CNN based BCI.

Neuromorphic computing, a brain inspired non-Von Neumann computing system, addresses the challenges posed by the Moore’s law memory wall phenomenon. It has the capability to increasingly enhance performance while maintaining power efficiency. Neuromorphic chip architecture requirements vary depending on the application and optimizing it for large-scale applications remains to be a challenge. Neuromorphic chips are programmed using spiking neural networks which provide them with important properties such as parallelism, asynchronism, and on-device learning. Widely used spiking neuron models include the Hodgkin-Huxley Model, Izhikevich model, integrate-and-fire model and spike response model. Hardware implementation platforms of the chip follow three approaches: analog, digital, or a combination of both. Each platform can be implemented using various memory topologies which interconnects with the learning mechanism. Current neuromorphic computing systems typically use the unsupervised learning spike timing-dependent plasticity algorithms. However, algorithms such as voltage-dependent synaptic plasticity have the potential to enhance performance. This review summarizes the potential neuromorphic chip architecture specifications and highlights which applications they are suitable for.

Uncontrolled and fast cell proliferation is the cause of brain tumors. Early cancer detection is vitally important in order to save many lives. Brain tumors can be divided into several categories depending on the kind, place of origin, pace of development, and stage of progression; as a result, tumor classification is crucial for targeted therapy. The aim of brain tumor segmentation is to accurately delineate the areas of the brain. A specialist with a thorough understanding of brain illnesses must manually identify the proper type of brain tumor. Additionally, processing a lot of images takes time and is tiresome. Therefore, automatic segmentation and classification techniques are required to speed up and enhance the diagnosis of brain tumors. Tumors can be quickly and safely detected by brain scans using imaging modalities, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and others. Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) have shown promise in the development of algorithms that aid in automatic classification and segmentation utilizing various imaging modalities. This review discussed various types of brain tumors, publicly accessible datasets, enhancement methods, segmentation, feature extraction, classification, machine learning techniques, and deep learning, learning through transfer, for the study of brain tumors.

This study presents a novel semi-supervised deep learning method utilizing 3D TOF-MRA images for the detection of brain aneurysms, employing landmark-based techniques that mimic radiologist practices to enhance detection accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract: In recent years, low frequency (LF) electroencephalogram (EEG) signals have been decoded to obtain kinematic trajectories with the aim of achieving closed loop natural control. However, decoded trajectories suffer variability and low correlation against the measured movement. This paper suggests that if EEG features of motor intents are directly associated with fixed points along a given range of motion, then the natural kinematic parameters can be quantified. A novel classification method is proposed to evaluate this hypothesis along with equations for obtaining the movement parameters (velocity, acceleration). Furthermore, this implies that the force of an end-effector and work done in moving the end-effector may be computed, leading to natural control of EEG-based robotic arms and neuroprostheses. Finally, expectations are that combining the proposed method with existing classification methods will increase the accuracy and scalability of brain-computer interface (BCI) applications.

The objective of this study was aimed to study the sensory processes of the “human-computer interaction” model when classifying visual images with an incomplete set of signs based on the analysis of early, middle, late and slow components of event-related potentials (ERPs). 26 healthy subjects (men) aged 20-22 years were investigated. ERPs in 19 monopolar sites according to the 10/20 system were recorded. Discriminant and factor analysis were applied. The component N450 is the most specialized indicator of the perception of unrecognizable (oddball) visual images. The amplitude of the ultra-late components N750 and N900 is also higher under conditions of presentation of the oddball image, regardless of the location of the registration points. The results of the study are discussed in the light of the paradigm of the P300 wave application in brain-computer interface systems, as well as with the peculiarities in brain pathology. Promising directions for the development of studies of the “Brain Computer Interface” (BCI) P300 systems are to increase the throughput of information flows. To extend the application of the P300 ERPs to multiple modalities, the underlying physiological mechanisms and responses of the brain for a particular sensory system and mental function must be carefully examined.

Manual interpretation of these huge amounts of image volumes are susceptible to inter-reader variability and human error. Thus, accurate automated CAD scheme is highly desirable in clinical pathological diagnosis. In this research, plethora of machine learning paradigms (e.g. feature extraction, dimensionality reduction and supervised classification methods) were explored, evaluated, compared and analyzed to identify the optimal pathway for brain MR images (normal vs neoplastic) binary classification task. External validation dataset was used to test the generalizability of the optimal predictive models implemented. Relevant and informative features were selected to construct cross-validated decision tree and eventually simple rule set was built based on the decision tree. The experimental results show that almost all pattern recognition paradigms achieve high accuracy with careful selection of number of attributes. LDA+ELM with 55 features are the optimal pipelines which achieve perfect classification when training and test data are of same source; and achieving (accuracy=97.5%, AUC=0.989, sensitivity=95% and specificity=100%) under balanced test dataset; (accuracy=99.5%, AUC=0.988, sensitivity=95% and specificity=100%). Cross-validated decision tree model also shows comparable performance: accuracy=98.8%, AUC=99.1%, sensitivity=99.6% and specificity=98.2%. Three highly relevant and robust attributes are visualized and selected for construction of decision tree models and finally a rule sets are read directly off the decision tree. This rule sets can potentially serve as fast and accurate classification algorithm.

There have been multiple technological advancements that promise to gradually enable devices to measure and record signals with high resolution and accuracy in the domain of Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI). Multi-modal BCIs have been able to gain significant traction given the potential to enhance signal processing by integrating different recording modalities. In this review, we explore the integration of multiple neuroimaging and neurophysiological modalities including Electroencephalography (EEG), Magnetoencephalography (MEG), Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), Electrocorticography (ECoG), and Single-Unit Activity (SUA). This multimodal approach leverages the high temporal resolution of EEG and MEG with the spatial precision of fMRI, the invasive yet precise nature of ECoG, and the single-neuron specificity provided by SUA. The paper highlights the advantages of integrating multiple modalities, such as increased accuracy and reliability, and discusses the challenges and limitations of multimodal integration. Furthermore, we explain the data acquisition approaches for each of these modalities. We also demonstrate various software programs that help in extracting, cleaning, and refining the data. We conclude this paper with discussion on the available literature highlighting recent advances, challenges, and future directions for each of these modalities.

Technology-based approaches for upper limb (UL) motor rehabilitation after stroke are designed mostly for severely affected patients to increase their recovery chances. However, the available randomised controlled trials (RCTs) focused on efficacy of technology-based interventions often include patients with a wide range of motor impairment. This scoping review aims at overviewing the actual severity of stroke patients enrolled in RCTs which claim to specifically address UL severe motor impairment. The literature search was conducted on Scopus and PubMed databases and included articles from 2008 to May 2024, specifically RCTs investigating the impact of technology-based interventions on UL motor functional recovery after stroke. Forty-eight studies were selected. They showed that upon patients’ enrolment the values of the UL Fugl-Meyer Assessment and Action Research Arm Test covered the whole range of both scales, thus revealing the non-selective inclusion of severe impaired patients. Heterogeneity in terms of numerosity, characteristics of enrolled patients, trial design, implementation, and reporting were present across studies. No clear difference in the severity of the included patients according to the intervention type was found. Patient stratification upon enrolment is crucial to best direct resources to those patients who will benefit the most from a given technology-assisted approach (personalised rehabilitation).

Emotions play a vital role in understanding human behavior and interpersonal relationships. The ability to recognize emotions through Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals offers an alternative to traditional methods, such as questionnaires, enabling the identification of emotional states in a non-intrusive manner. Automatic emotion recognition holds great potential, eliminating the need for clinical examinations or physical visits, thereby contributing significantly to the advancement of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology. However, one of the key challenges lies in effectively selecting and extracting relevant features from the EEG signal to establish meaningful distinctions between different emotional states. The process of feature selection is often time-consuming and demanding. In this research, we propose a groundbreaking approach for automatically identifying three emotional states (positive, negative, and neutral) by leveraging auditory stimulation of EEG signals. Our novel method directly applies the raw EEG signal to a Convolutional Neural Network-Long Short Term Memory (CNN-LSTM) architecture, bypassing the conventional feature extraction and selection steps. This unconventional approach offers a significant departure from existing literature. Our proposed network architecture comprises ten convolutional layers, followed by three LSTM layers and two fully connected layers. Through extensive simulations and evaluations on 12 active channels, our algorithm demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving an accuracy of 97.42\% and 95.23\% for the binary classification of negative and positive emotions, as well as a Cohen's Kappa coefficient of 0.96 and 0.93 for the three-class classification (negative, neutral, and positive), respectively. These promising results highlight the efficacy of our novel methodology and its potential implications in advancing emotion recognition using EEG signals.

Mental stress state recognition using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals for real-life applications needs a conventional wearable device. This requires an efficient number of EEG channels and an optimal feature set. The main objective of the study is to identify an optimal feature subset that can best discriminate mental stress states while enhancing the overall performance. Thus, multi-domain feature extraction methods were employed, namely, time domain, frequency domain, time-frequency domain, and network connectivity features, to form a large feature vector space. To avoid the computational complexity of high dimensional space, a hybrid feature selection (FS) method of minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance with Particle Swarm Optimization and Support Vector Machine (mRMR-PSO-SVM) is proposed to remove noise, redundant, and irrelevant features and keep the optimal feature subset. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated and verified using four datasets, namely EDMSS, DEAP, SEED, and EDPMSC. To further consolidate, the effectiveness of the proposed method is compared with that of the state-of-the-art heuristic methods. The proposed model has significantly reduced the features vector space by an average of 70% in comparison to the state-of-the-art methods while significantly increasing overall detection performance.

Medical brain image analysis is a necessary step in the Computers Assisted /Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems. Advancements in both hardware and software in the past few years have led to improved segmentation and classification of various diseases. In the present work, we review the published literature on systems and algorithms that allow for classification, identification, and detection of White Matter Hyperintensities (WMHs) of brain MRI images specifically in cases of ischemic stroke and demyelinating diseases. For the selection criteria, we used the bibliometric networks. Out of a total of 140 documents we selected 38 articles that deal with the main objectives of this study. Based on the analysis and discussion of the revised documents, there is constant growth in the research and proposal of new models of deep learning to achieve the highest accuracy and reliability of the segmentation of ischemic and demyelinating lesions. Models with indicators (Dice Score, DSC: 0.99) were found, however with little practical application due to the uses of small datasets and lack of reproducibility. Therefore, the main conclusion is to establish multidisciplinary research groups to overcome the gap between CAD developments and their complete utilization in the clinical environment.

In recent years, news media has been greatly disrupted by the potential of technologically driven approaches in the creation, production, and distribution of news products and services. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged from the realm of science fiction and has become a very real tool that can aid society in addressing many issues, including the challenges faced by the news industry. The ubiquity of computing has become apparent and has demonstrated the different approaches that can be achieved using AI. We analyzed the news industry’s AI adoption based on the seven subfields of AI: (i) machine learning; (ii) computer vision (CV); (iii) speech recognition; (iv) natural language processing (NLP); (v) planning, scheduling, and optimization; (vi) expert systems; and (vii) robotics. Our findings suggest that three subfields are being developed more in the news media: machine learning, computer vision, as well as planning, scheduling, and optimization. Other areas have not been fully deployed in the journalistic field. Most AI news projects rely on funds from tech companies such as Google. This limits AI’s potential to a small number of players in the news industry. We make conclusions by providing examples of how these subfields are being developed in journalism and present an agenda for future research.

Computer vision is considered as an ally to solve business problems that require human intervention, intelligence and criteria. This topic of research has evolved in XXI century at faster peace, delivering various alternatives from open source until commercial platforms. With so many options and market growing, it result difficult to make a decision on which one to use, or even worse, realize it was not suited for different scenarios. In this paper we analyze five options selected arbitrarily and tested on a dataset of 755 images to detect persons in an image, using object detectors. We analyze elapsed time to process an image, error with observations by humans, number of persons detected, correlation of time and person density, object detected size and F1 Score, considering precision and recall. As we found there are score ties and similar behaviors among options available, we introduce a novel index that takes in consideration the number of persons and their pixel size, to propose the Vision Acuity Index of Computer Vision. The results demonstrate this is a good option to serve as indicator to make decisions. Also, this index proposed have a potential to be expanded for different business use cases, and to measure new proposed algorithms in the future along with the traditional metrics used previously.

Based on non-invasive neuroimaging techniques and graph theory-based network analyses, many researchers have tried to use small-world network model to elucidate sex differences in the brain. This manuscript aims to compile the related research findings from the past few years and summarize the sex differences in human brain networks from the perspective of small-world properties. We reviewed published reports examining altered small-world properties in both the functional and structural brain networks between males and females. Based on four patterns of altered small-world properties proposed--randomization, regularization, stronger small-worldization and weaker small-worldization, we found that current results point to a significant trend toward more regularization in females and more randomization in males in the functional brain networks. As for particular topological properties, the most consistent findings include a significant shift toward higher global efficiency in males and higher local efficiency in females in the functional network studies. On the other hand, there seems to be no consensus to date on the sex differences in small-world properties of the structural brain networks. Nevertheless, we noticed that the sample sizes in many published studies are limited, and future studies with larger samples are warranted to obtain more reliable results. We anticipate that the conclusions in this manuscript will contribute to a deeper understanding of neurobiological mechanisms underlying the sex differences in the brain.

Whole-brain radiation therapy and stereotactic radiosurgery are two treatment modalities commonly utilized to treat brain metastases (BMs). The aim of this study is to retrospectively analyze the main radio-oncologic and clinical-demographic aspects of a cohort of BM patients treated with Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy for radiosurgery (VMAT-RS). This is a cross-sectional observational design study with retrospective review of medical records of patients with brain metastases treated with VMAT- RS between 2012 and 2018. Clinical and demographic data, with special attention to sex, age, primary tumor, brain tumor-related epilepsy (BTRE), number and brain location of BMs, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS), the updated DS-GPA prognostic index and the survival estimated according to the Kaplan-Meier model from the date of radiosurgery were analyzed. One hundred and twenty-one patients with 229 BMs were treated with VMAT-RS. Patients presented 1-4 BMs, which were treated with 5 non-coplanar VMAT arcs. Sixty-eight percent of the patients had lung cancer and 35% of the BMs were in the frontal lobe. Proportion of local control was 88.5%. BTRE prevalence was 30.6%. The median survival time (MST) was 7.7 months. In the multivariate analysis of the Cox Regression model KPS70 (HRKPS<70=2.59; p=0.001) and higher DS-GPA (HRDS-GPAII =0.55, p=0.022; HRDS-GPAIII-IV =0.38, p=0.006) were associated with improved survival. In the univariate analysis, primary tumor, age and the presence of metastases in the posterior fossa (PFBMs) were also significative. In conclusion, the VMAT-RS is a technique with an overall survival comparable to other radiosurgery techniques. The median survival is significantly longer in those with higher KPS and DS-GPA. Other variables such as the type of primary tumor, age and PFBMs could also influence survival, although further studies are needed.

By integrating techniques such as facial recognition, gesture control, and eye tracking, interfaces can adapt in real-time to users’ actions and intentions, thus enhancing accessibility, efficiency, and engagement across various applications, from healthcare to gaming. The study reviews current advancements and challenges in using AI and CV for HCI, including data privacy, model interpretability, and computational efficiency. Experimental results demonstrate the potential of these technologies to improve interaction quality and user satisfaction. This work aims to contribute to the growing field of intelligent HCI design, offering insights into practical implementations and future research directions in AI-driven interface development.

The proliferation of intelligent monitoring devices has led to the widespread adoption of background extraction technology across a multitude of domains, including intelligent transportation, video surveillance, human-computer interaction, and medical diagnosis. In this work, the model employs a multi-layer convolutional neural network structure, which enables the extraction and fusion of scene features from different scales in a layer-by-layer manner. This approach facilitates the comprehensive capture of complex scene information. The convolutional network comprises multiple layers, with each layer responsible for extracting features at a specific scale. The shallower layers capture more detailed feature information, whereas the deeper layers focus on more global scene features. The strategy of multi-scale feature fusion allows the model to fully capture multi-level and multi-dimensional information in the context of large-scale scenes. Furthermore, the incorporation of an attention mechanism enables the model to adaptively allocate attention to salient regions, thereby enhancing its capacity to discern intricate scenes by assigning greater significance to pivotal features. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective in practice, as evidenced by its performance on public datasets.

This study explores the integration of computer vision with topology optimization for additive manufacturing, with a focus on maximizing eigenfrequency in a design domain. Utilizing cus-tom-developed photogrammetry software, high-resolution images are processed to generate de-tailed 3D models, subsequently converted to STL files with precision. Adaptive meshing in COMSOL Multiphysics, controlled through a MATLAB API, ensures optimal mesh resolution. Prioritizing resource conservation in extraterrestrial environments, the original volume is reduced by 50% while preserving structural integrity. The design domain undergoes rigorous topology optimization in MATLAB, supported by COMSOL's advanced FEM simulation. The optimized design exhibits a 57% performance improvement and a 50% weight reduction, maintaining desired vibration characteristics, validating the efficacy of the modifications. Moreover, the case with an eccentric mass shows a significant 64% increase in eigenfrequency.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among all ages; despite the advances, understanding pathophysiological responses after TBI is still complex, involving multiple mechanisms. Previous reviews have focused on potential targets; however, the research on potential targets has continuously grown in the last five years, bringing even more alternatives and elucidating previous mechanisms. Knowing the key and updated pathophysiology concepts is vital for adequate management and better outcomes. This article reviews the underlying molecular mechanisms, the latest updates, and future directions for pathophysiology-based TBI management.

Along just over a century of research we moved from learning how to cultivate tissues in a dish to grasping the concepts for creating an entire brain in a vat. As we approach the divisive moment in which we can first detect signs of awareness in such artificially developed organoids, we need to lay foundation for what lays ahead. It is crucial that ethical, legal and moral implications of organoid research are clear and that boundaries are set to separate scientific progress from human life preservation. The largest obstacle may be the definition of consciousness itself, which has arguably been historically neglected by philosophy, psychology and neurosciences at large. One reason may be the difficulties posed by the underlying qualities of awareness, such as its subjective and heterogeneous nature. Another reason may lie on the possibly that consciousness is an overarching emergent property of our brain. For the time being, one can see brain organoids as philosophical zombies, physical analogues of the human brain which mimic sentient human reactions but lack experiential properties of sensation (a.k.a. qualia).

The field of 3D model generation has become essential across various industries, including gaming, virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), architecture, and medical imaging. Traditionally reliant on manual efforts, 3D content creation is now being transformed by deep generative models, enabling more efficient, scalable, and dynamic generation of complex shapes and environments. This survey provides a comprehensive review of key backbone architectures used for 3D generation, including autoencoders, variational autoencoders (VAEs), generative adversarial networks (GANs), autoregressive models, diffusion models, normalizing flows, attention-based models, CLIP-guided models, and procedural generation techniques. We explore each model’s role in 3D generation, highlighting their strengths—such as the precision of VAEs, the realism of GANs, the stability of diffusion models, and the scalability of procedural methods—alongside their limitations, such as training instability, high computational costs, and the difficulty in handling multi-modal data. Additionally, we discuss the increasing relevance of attention-enhanced models and the integration of text-based CLIP supervision for improved semantic alignment in 3D outputs. The survey concludes with an analysis of open challenges, including balancing efficiency with expressiveness, managing training complexity, and addressing dataset limitations. It also identifies future research directions, such as few-shot learning, hybrid architectures, and neural-symbolic approaches, which promise to advance the field by improving the generalization and versatility of 3D generation models. This paper aims to guide researchers and practitioners in navigating the evolving landscape of 3D generative methods and inspire new innovations in the creation of realistic, high-quality 3D content.

Engineering of quantum computers requires reliable characterization of qubits, quantum operations, and even the entire hardware. Quantum tomography is an indispensable framework in quantum characterization, verification, and validation (QCVV), which has been widely accepted by researchers. According to the tomographic target, quantum tomography can be categorized into quantum state tomography (QST), quantum process tomography (QPT), gate set tomography (GST), process tensor tomography (PTT), and instrument set tomography (IST). Standard quantum tomography toolkits generally consist of basic linear inverse methods and statistical maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) based methods. Furthermore, the performance of standard methods, including effectiveness and efficiency, has been further developed by exploiting Bayesian estimation, neural networks, matrix completion techniques, etc. In this review, we introduce the fundamental quantum tomography techniques, including QST, QPT, GST, PTT, and IST. We first introduce the details of basic linear inverse methods. Then, the framework of MLE methods with constraints is summarized. Finally, we briefly introduce recent further research in developing the performance of tomography. This review provides a primary getting-start in developing quantum tomography, which promotes quantum computer development.

Background: Processing whole-slide images (WSI) to train neural networks can be intricate and laborious. We developed an open-source library covering recurrent tasks in processing of WSI and in evaluating the performance of the trained networks for classification tasks. Methods: Two histopathology use-cases were selected. First we aimed to train a CNN to distinguish H&E-stained slides obtained from neuropathologically classified low-grade epilepsy-associated dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNET) and ganglioglioma (GG). The second project we trained a convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict the hormone expression of pituitary adenoms only from hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained slides. In the same approach, we addressed the issue to also predict clinically silent corticotroph adenoma. We included four clinico-pathological disease conditions in a multilabel approach. Results: Our best performing CNN achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.97 for the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) for corticotroph adenoma, 0.86 for silent corticotroph adenoma and 0.98 for gonadotroph adenoma. Our DNET-GG classifier achieved an AUC of 1.00 for the ROC curve. All scores were calculated with the help of our library on predictions on a case basis. Conclusions: Our comprehensive library is most helpful to standardize the work-flow and minimize the work-burden in training CNN. It is also compatible with fastai. Indeed, our new CNNs reliably extracted neuropathologically relevant information from the H&E staining only. This approach will supplement the clinico-pathological diagnosis of brain tumors, which is currently based on cost-intense microscopic examination and variable panels of immunohistochemical stainings.

Background: Patients undergoing brain tumor resection experience neurological and cognitive (i.e., neurocognitive) changes reflected in altered performance on neuropsychological tests. These changes can be difficult to explain or predict. Brain connectivity, measured with neuroimaging, offers one potential model for examining these changes. In this study, we evaluated whether longitudinal changes in brain connectivity correlated with changes in neurocognitive abilities in patients before and after brain tumor resection.

Methods: Patients underwent functional and diffusion MR scanning and neuropsychological evaluation before tumor resection followed by repeat scanning and evaluation two weeks post-resection. Using this functional and diffusion imaging data, we measured changes in the topology of the functional and structural networks. From the neuropsychological testing scores, we derived a composite score that described a patient’s overall level of neurocognitive functioning. We then used a multiple linear regression model to test whether structural and functional connectivity measures were correlated with changes in composite scores.

Results: Multiple linear regression on 21 subjects showed that connectivity changes were highly correlated with changes in neuropsychological evaluation scores (R² adjusted = 0.79, p<0.001). Changes in functional local efficiency (p<0.001) and global efficiency (p<0.05) were inversely correlated with changes in composite score, while changes in modularity (p<0.01) as well as the patient’s age (p<0.05) were directly correlated with changes in composite score.

Conclusion: Short interval changes in brain connectivity markers were strongly correlated with changes in the composite neuropsychological test scores in brain tumor resection patients. Our findings support the need for further exploration of brain connectivity as a biomarker relevant to brain tumor patients.

Background: There is an increasing interest in the role of EEG in neurorehabilitation. We primarily aimed to identify the knowledge base through highly influential studies. Our secondary aims were to imprint the relevant thematic hotspots, research trends, and social networks within the scientific community. Methods: We performed an electronic search in Scopus looking for studies reporting on rehabilitation in patients with neurological disabilities. The most influential papers outlined the knowledge base, while a word co-occurrence analysis imprinted the research hotspots. Likewise, co-citation analyses highlighted collaboration networks between Universities, authors, and countries. The results were presented in summary tables, burst detection plots, and geospatial maps. Finally, a content review based on the top-20 most cited articles completed our study. Results: Our current bibliometric study was based on 874 records from 420 sources. There was a vivid research interest in EEG use for neurorehabilitation, with an annual growth rate as high as 14.3%. The most influential paper was the study titled "Brain-computer interfaces, a review" by Nicolas-Alfonso LF and Gomez-Gill J, with 997 citations, followed by "Brain-computer interfaces in neurological rehabilitation" by Daly J. and Wolpaw JR (708 citations). The USA, Italy, and Germany were among the most productive countries. The research hotspots shifted with time from the use of “functional magnetic imaging” to EEG-based “brain-machine interface”, “motor imagery”, and “deep learning”. Conclusions: EEG constitutes the most significant input in brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and can be successfully used in the neurorehabilitation of patients with stroke, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and traumatic brain and spinal injury. EEG-based BCI facilitates training, communication, and control of wheelchair and exoskeletons. However, research is limited to specific scientific groups from developed countries. Evidence is expected to change with the broader availability of BCI and improvement in EEG filtering algorithms.

Tissues of the brain, especially white matter, are extremely heterogeneous - with constitutive response varying spatially. In this paper, we implement a high-resolution Finite Element (FE) head model where heterogeneities of white matter structures are introduced through Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) experiments. Displacement of white matter under shear wave excitation is captured and the material properties determined though an inversion algorithm are directly used in the FE model. This approach is found to improve model predictions when compared to experimental results. In the first place, responses in the cerebrum near stiff structures such as the corpus callosum and corona radiata are markedly different compared with a homogenized material model. Additionally, the heterogeneities introduce additional attenuation of the shear wave due to wave scattering within the cerebrum.

One of the biggest queries in cognitive sciences is the emergence of consciousness from matter. Modern neurobiological theories of consciousness propose that conscious experience is the result of interactions between large-scale neuronal networks in the brain, traditionally described within the realm of classical physics. Here, we propose a generalized connectionist framework in which the emergence of “conscious networks” is not exclusive of large brain areas, but can be identified in sub-cellular networks exhibiting non-trivial quantum phenomena. The essential feature of such networks is the existence of strong correlations in the system (classical or quantum coherence) and the presence of an optimal point at which the system’s complexity is maximized, expressed either by maximization of the information content in large scale functional networks or by achieving optimal efficiency through the quantum Goldilock effect.

This study presents a novel approach combining computer vision with topology optimization for additive manufacturing. Using specialized photogrammetry software, we capture high-resolution images of the design domain to create precise 3D models through detailed scanning. These models are converted into STL file format and remeshed using an adaptive algorithm within COMSOL 5.3 Multiphysics, managed by a custom MATLAB 2023. This integration allows optimal mesh resolution and accuracy in analyses. We applied this method to design a concrete pillar for 3D printing, aiming for a 75% volume reduction to enhance material efficiency and stability, crucial for extraterrestrial environments. The design, scanned with a 360-degree camera array, informed the MATLAB-based topology optimization process. Combining MATLAB’s optimization algorithms with COMSOL’s meshing and finite element solver solver, we explored material-efficient configurations. The results show significant volume reduction, particularly in the central design area, optimizing material use while maintaining structural stability. The optimization algorithm demonstrated rapid, stable convergence to near-optimal solutions within about 20 iterations, highlighting the method’s efficiency and robustness in complex design optimization.

This work addresses the challenge of EEG visual multiclass classification into 40 classes for Brain-Computer interface applications, by using deep learning architectures. The visual multiclass classification approach offers BCI applications a significant advantage, since it allows the supervision of more than one BCI interaction, considering that each class label supervises a BCI task. However, because of the nonlinearity and nonstationarity of EEG signals, performing multiclassifiers based on EEG features remains a significant challenge for BCI systems. In the present work, mutual information-based discriminant channel selection and Minimum-Norm Estimate algorithms are implemented to select discriminant channels and enhance EEG data. Hence, deep EEGNet and Convolutional-recurrent neural networks are implemented separately to classify EEG data of image visualization into 40 labels. By using the k-fold cross-validation approach, average classification accuracies of 94.8% and 89.8% were obtained by implementing the aforementioned network architectures, respectively. Satisfactory results obtained with this method offer a new implementation opportunity for multi-task BCI applications by utilizing a reduced number of channels (&lt;50%), compared to those presented in the related literature where the whole set of channels is used.

Brain tumors still remain a deadly cancer that, in most cases, is difficult to diagnose at an earlier stage. Therefore, it is necessary to develop rapid, sensitive methods for detecting cancer biomarkers. Such a biomarker may be a microRNA which expression level in body fluids is strongly correlated with cancer. Numerous studies have demonstrated changes in the expression of microRNAs in cerebrospinal fluid and blood samples collected from patients with brain tumors. These new biomarkers have the potential to help diagnose brain cancers at an early stage, avoiding the most invasive procedures. This review discusses the functional role of microRNAs and the prospects for their use as diagnostic biomarkers in patients with brain tumors.

A brain tumor is an abnormal mass of tissue found inside the brain that consists of cells that grow and multiply without any control and unchecked by the mechanisms that regulate normal cell growth. It is one of the leading causes of death in many different regions worldwide, affecting various ages, sex, race, or ethnicities. Besides being a life-threatening condition, it can also disrupt normal brain function leading to severe cognitive morbidity. Additionally, the cost associated with active treatment and palliative care of the brain tumor most often proves to be out of reach for many people. Over the past decades, even though we have several published literature showing the epidemiology and characteristics of brain tumors, up-to-date epidemiological data is yet to be published. This review will provide comparable recent statistics regarding the incidence of brain tumors in 3 different regions; - the USA, the UK, and Australia. Also, a focus will be given to brain tumor’s key characteristics, classifications, and treatment protocol.

Background: Dosimetric predictors of brain necrosis (BN) have not yet been established for fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT). Methods: Multivariate logistic models were developed for comprehensive analyses of dosimetric predictors in patients who received first-line fractionated SRT for brain metastases (BMs). The normal brain volume receiving a xx Gy biological dose in 2 Gy fractions (VxxGyE) was calculated from the retrieved dose-volume parameters. Results: Three-fraction SRT was delivered to 34 patients with 74 BMs (mean target volume, 4.3 cc), 5-fraction SRT to 58 with 106 BMs (15.4 cc), and 10-fraction SRT to 20 with 35 BMs (25.9 cc) according to protocols depending on the target volume (p &lt;0.001). In the 5- and 10-fraction groups, the incidence of symptomatic BN was significantly higher in patients with a larger V50GyE (odds ratio: 1.07, p &lt;0.02), V55GyE (1.08, p &lt;0.01), or V60GyE (1.09, p &lt;0.01). The incidence of BN was also significantly higher in cases with V55GyE &gt;30 cc or V60GyE &gt;20 cc (p &lt;0.05). Conclusion: In 5- or 10-fraction SRT, at least V55GyE ≤30 cc or V60GyE ≤20 cc should be maintained to lower the risk of BN.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) acts as a specialized structure separating the brain from peripheral blood circulation and plays an important role in brain function. Following an ischaemic stroke or cerebral ischaemia, the BBB is damaged leading to degraded proteins being released into blood circulation. However, little is known about cerebral ischaemia and reperfusion (I/R) induced BBB damage and changes in circulatory biomarkers. This study aims to use both immunohistochemistry and western blotting (WB) to examine neuronal death, glial cell alterations and changes in BBB tight junction (TJ) proteins such as zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), Occludin and Claudin-5 in the hippocampus in a murine model of cerebral I/R. The changes in these proteins in the blood serum of this model were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The results showed neuronal death and a significant increase in glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a protein primarily expressed in astrocytes and a significant decrease in TJ proteins, ZO-1, Occludin and Claudin-5 in the hippocampus of occluded mice as compared to sham-operated mice. These changes are associated with an increased level of these proteins in blood serum in ischaemic mice, suggesting that these proteins can be used as potential biomarkers for determining ischaemic stroke.

Magnetic Nanoparticles (MNPs) is a promising technique to cure brain diseases. On the one hand, by serving as drug carriers, they can bypass the blood-brain barrier and deliver drug molecules to the brain parenchyma; on the other hand, their transport trajectory can be manipulated by applying an external magnetic field. However, due to the complex microstructure of brain tissues, e.g. the anisotropy of white matter (WM), how to achieve desired drug distribution patterns, e.g. uniform distribution, by tuning the drug delivery system is largely unknown. Here, in this study, by adopting a mathematical model capable of capturing the diffusion trajectories of MNPs in the microstructures, we systematically investigated the effects of key parameters in the MNPs delivery system on the equivalent diffusion coefficient of MNPs in the microenvironment of brain WM. The results show that uniform distribution of MNPs in anisotropic tissues can be achieved by adjusting the particle size and magnetic field. We have not only obtained a deeper understanding on how to optimise the MNPs delivery system, it can also be anticipated that an improved mathematical model could even help to achieve complex drug distribution patterns in the complicated brain environment by designing an appropriate combination of the key parameters.

Proper nutrition is crucial for normal brain and neurocognitive development. Failure to optimize neurodevelopment early in life can have profound long-term implications for both mental health and quality of life. Although the first 1000 days of life represent the most critical period of neurodevelopment, the central and peripheral nervous systems continue to develop and change throughout life. All this time, development and functioning depend on many factors, including adequate nutrition. In this review, we outline the role of nutrients in cognitive, emotional, and neural development in infants and young children with special attention to the emerging roles of polar lipids and high quality (available) protein. Furthermore, we discuss the dynamic nature of the gut-brain axis and the importance of microbial diversity in relation to a variety of outcomes, including brain maturation/function and behavior are discussed. Finally, the promising therapeutic potential of psychobiotics to modify gut microbial ecology in order to improve mental well-being is presented. Here we show that the individual contribution of nutrients, their interaction with other micro-and macronutrients, and the way in which they are organized in the food matrix are of crucial importance for normal neurocognitive development.

Our knowledge on the plastic functions of the serotonin (5-HT) receptor subtype 7 (5-HT7R) in the brain physiology and pathology considerably advanced in the last few years. A wealth of data show that the 5-HT7R is a key player in the establishment and remodeling of neuronal cytoarchitecture during development and in the mature brain, and its dysfunction is linked to neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental diseases. The involvement of this receptor in synaptic plasticity is further demonstrated by data showing that its activation allows to rescue long term potentiation (LTP) and long term depression (LTD) deficits in various animal models of neurodevelopmental diseases. In addition, it is becoming clear that the 5-HT7R is involved in inflammatory intestinal diseases, possibly playing a role in the gut-brain axis, and modulates the function of immune cells. In this review, we will mainly focus on recent findings on this receptor’s role in the structural and synaptic plasticity of the mammalian brain, although we will also illustrate novel aspects highlighted in gut and immune system.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects approximately 1% of the world's population. To diagnose and estimate the occurrence of epilepsy, the analysis of recorded brain activity is performed by a neurologist, which is not only time-consuming and tedious but also occasionally accompanied by human error. Therefore, in recent decades, researchers have aimed to unravel an approach for designing and building an automated method for diagnosing and estimating the occurrence of epilepsy. Accordingly, the present study proposed two new-fangled ways based on brain signals and a convolutional neural network (CNN). Moreover, this research implements a CNN with a sequential three-layer structure. Numerous experiments were performed, and the accuracy of estimating epilepsy using the developed methods was achieved at 95% without feedback and 97% with feedback. The proposed methods were proven to be more accurate than the previous techniques and can be employed as a physician's assistant once entering the field of operation.

Here, we review findings and trends in sleep research in 2020-2021 demonstrating how COVID-19 and sleep disorders can induce the BBB leakage via neuroinflammation, which might contribute to the 'coronasomnia' phenomenon. The new studies suggest that the controlling of sleep hygiene and quality should be incorporated into the rehabilitation of COVID-19 patients. We also discuss perspective strategies for prevention of COVID-19-related BBB disorders. We demonstrate that sleep might be a novel biomarker of the BBB leakage and the analysis of sleep EEG patterns can be a breakthrough non-invasive technology for diagnosis of the COVID-19-caused BBB disruption.

New research points to a possible link between Autism Spectrum Disorder and the gut microbiota as many autistic children have co-occurring gastrointestinal problems. This review focuses on specific alterations of gut microbiota mostly observed in autistic patients. Particularly, the mechanisms through which such alterations may trigger the production of the bacterial metabolites or leaky gut in autistic people are described. Various altered metabolite levels were observed in autistic children, many of those were of bacterial origin such as short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), indoles and lipopolysaccharides. A less integrative gut-blood-barrier is abundant in autistic individuals. This explains the leakage of bacterial metabolites into the patients triggering new body responses or altered metabolism. Some other co-occurring symptoms such as mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress in the cells, altered tight junctions in the blood brain barrier and structural changes in cortex, hippocampus, amygdala and cerebellum were detected. Moreover, this paper suggests that autism is associated with an unbalanced gut microbiota (dysbiosis). Although the cause-effect relationship between autism and gut microbiota is not yet well established, consumption of specific probiotics may represent a powerful tool to re-establish gut homeostasis and promote gut health. Diagnostic and therapeutic value of new biomarkers leading to the perturbation in the phenylalanine metabolism will be discussed.

A facilitative transport system exists on the blood brain barrier (BBB) that has been tacitly assumed to be a path for glutamate entry to brain. But glutamate is a non-essential amino acid whose brain content is much greater than plasma, and studies in vivo show that glutamate does not enter brain in material quantities except in those small regions with fenestrated capillaries (circumventricular organs). The situation became understandable when luminal (blood facing) and abluminal (brain facing) membranes were isolated and studied separately. Facilitative transport of glutamate and glutamine exist only on the luminal membranes whereas Na+-dependent transport systems for glutamate, glutamine and some other amino acids are present only on the abluminal membrane. The Na+-dependent cotransporters of the abluminal membrane are in a position to actively transport amino acids from the extracellular fluid (ECF) into the endothelial cells of the BBB. These powerful secondary active transporters couple the energy of the Na+-gradient to move glutamate and glutamine into the ECF whereupon glutamate can exit to blood on the luminal facilitative glutamate transporter. Glutamine may also exit brain on a separate facilitative transport system that exists on the luminal membranes or glutamine can be hydrolyzed to glutamate within the BBB thereby releasing ammonia that is freely diffusible. The γ-glutamyl participate cycle participates indirectly by producing oxoproline (pyroglutamate) that stimulates almost all secondary active transporters yet discovered in the abluminal membranes of the BBB.

The aim of this study is to develop a software solution for real-time recognition of sign language words using two arms. This will enable communication between hearing-impaired individuals and those who can hear. Several sign language recognition systems have been developed using different technologies, including cameras, armbands, and gloves. The system developed in this study utilizes surface electromyography (muscle activity) and inertial measurement unit (motion dynamics) data from both arms. Other methods often have drawbacks, such as high costs, low accuracy due to ambient light and obstacles, and complex hardware requirements, which have prevented their practical application. A software has been developed that can run on different operating systems using digital signal processing and machine learning methods specific to the study. For the test, we created a dataset of 80 words based on their frequency of use in daily life and performed a thorough feature extraction process. We tested the recognition performance using various classifiers and parameters and compared the results. The Random Forest algorithm was found to have the highest success rate with 99.875% accuracy, while the Naive Bayes algorithm had the lowest success rate with 87.625% accuracy. Feedback from a test group of 10 people indicated that the system is user-friendly, aesthetically appealing, and practically useful. The new system enables smoother communication for people with hearing disabilities and promises seamless integration into daily life without compromising user comfort or lifestyle quality.

This brief report detailed the investigation of secondary school students' future intention to use Computer-Based Testing (CBT) in Lagos, Nigeria. A sample of 531 students, which is made-up of new and returning users of CBT, responded to a questionnaire based on a four-point Likert scale. The study aimed to explore whether ease of use, gender, computer self-efficacy, and prior experience influence the future intention to use CBT. Findings show that students who find CBT easier to use have a significantly higher intention to use it again. This association remains significant even when controlling for gender, computer self-efficacy, and experience. New users demonstrated a slightly higher mean intention to use CBT than returning users, possibly due to the novelty effect. This report recommends improving CBT's ease of use to accommodate varying levels of computer literacy and self-efficacy. Limitations of the investigation include the nominal nature of the data and the self-reported responses, which could impact the accuracy of the analysis. Future studies should adopt more robust methodologies, such as Structural Equation Modeling, to better explore these relationships.

Automation in agriculture is transforming the management of field tasks. These robotic systems integrate advanced machine vision technologies and neural networks to accurately detect ripe fruits and obstacles, thereby optimizing harvesting efficiency. Additionally, the use of proximity and touch sensors is emphasized, ensuring careful and safe handling of fruits to prevent damage during harvesting. The technical specifications of these robots, including traction, speed, and their ability to operate on slopes, are evaluated to ensure adaptability to different types of crops and ground conditions. Perception systems, utilizing advanced cameras and sensors, provide essential data for crop inspection and route planning. Through a thorough analysis of operational demands, environmental conditions, and technical specifications, this article aims to establish a solid foundation for guiding the development and construction of an efficient and viable harvesting robot. The prospects and potential of fruit-harvesting robots to transform agriculture are highlighted, underscoring the importance of ongoing research and development to overcome current challenges and enhance the feasibility and effectiveness of these robotic systems.

The computer program "Histropy" is an interactive Python program for the quantification of selected features of two-dimensional (2D) images/patterns (in either JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, or baseline TIF/TIFF formats) by means of calculations based on the pixel intensities in this data, their histograms, and user-selected sections of those histograms. The histograms of these images display pixel-intensity values along the x-axis (of a 2D Cartesian plot), with the frequency of each intensity value within the image represented along the y-axis. The images need to be of 8-bit or 16-bit information depth and can be of arbitrary size. (Up to 1024 pixels maximum on both sides is recommended as larger images tend to significantly slow the program’s performance). Histropy generates an image’s histogram surrounded by a graphical user interface that allows one to select any range of image-pixel intensity levels, i.e. sections along the histograms’ x-axis, using either the computer mouse or numerical text entries. The program subsequently calculates the (so-called Monkey Model) Shannon entropy and root-mean-square contrast for the selected section and displays them as part of what we call a "histogram-workspace-plot." To support the visual identification of small peaks in the histograms, the user can switch between a linear and log-base-10 display scale for the y-axis of the histograms. Pixel intensity data from different images can be overlaid onto the same histogram-workspace-plot for visual comparisons. The visual outputs of the program can be saved as histogram-workspace-plots in the PNG format for future usage. The source code of the program and a brief user manual are published in the supporting materials as well as on GitHub . Instead of taking only 2D images as inputs, the program’s functionality could be extended by a few lines of code to other potential uses employing data tables with one or two dimensions in the CSV format.

Livestock marketplaces consist of infrastructure and rules through which information is exchanged and transactions are completed. Livestock trading incurs significant transaction costs, beyond just commission fees paid to marketplace owners (e.g., se-lecting, loading and transporting animals). In addition, animals being transported, held and transacted in a market setting increases the likelihood of injury or disease. The Covid-19 pandemic contributed to large-scale changes across typically physical marketplaces as stay-at-home orders and travel restrictions were invoked. Livestock marketplaces pivoted online rapidly, facilitated by the deployment of video feeds, al-lowing buyers to view/purchase animals via mobile phone. This shift offered the promise of mitigating many of the transaction costs associated with a fully physical marketplace. This study evaluated how computer vision (CV) approaches can con-tribute to the evolution of livestock marketplaces. It used livestock video data for 240 cattle (bulls) weighing 320-740 Kg from 16 different breeds to elicit additional trade-relevant data (livestock weight) and can be considered as an intermediary step to better understand how video data can be used to further digitalize livestock trade, price formation and transaction completion via technology solutions. The dataset comes from three sales held on different dates in a single mart location, which allows a consistent camera setup throughout. CV technologies were employed to solve the problem of cattle weight estimation and a distinctive achievement lies in curating a dataset cap-turing cattle in motion within the context of a cattle auction thereby injecting realism and complexity into the CV weight estimation task. Employing advanced object detection algorithms, the study created an intricate data pipeline to generate an appropriate modelling dataset and devised new multi-channel architectures for deeper analysis of diverse image inputs. The significance of sizable datasets and the challenge of man-aging inherent input variability for accurate CV regression is highlighted. Top-down view predictions demonstrate comparatively better performance, although failing to achieve benchmark precision. Challenges arise from camera angle variations, roaming behaviors, and breed diversity. Likewise, side-view predictions face challenges due to increased variability and lack of standardization. Despite this, these predictions offer insights into the value of incorporating Region of Interest (ROI) coordinates and data augmentation for enhanced performance. The study concludes with a multi-input ar-chitecture combining top-down and side-view predictions, demonstrating moderate success highlighting potential synergy between both perspectives. The central con-clusion resonates strongly – using standardized and multi-view images encompassing controlled movement and consistent poses could bolster accurate CV weight estima-tion.

The term artificial intelligence refers to the field of computer science that deals with the design and implementation of computer systems that mimic elements of human behavior that imply basic intelligence: learning, adaptability, inference, contextual understanding, and problem solving among others. Artificial intelligence is a point of intersection between multiple sciences such as computer science, psychology, philosophy, neurology, linguistics and engineering science, with the aim of synthesizing intelligent behavior, with elements of reasoning, learning and adaptation to the environment, while it is usually applied to specially made machines or computers.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of the All-on-4 technique in fully edentulous maxilla using R2GATE software for flapless, computer-guided surgery and immediate loading. Ten adult patients with fully edentulous maxilla, aged between 35 and 60 years, were included in the study between April 2021 and April 2022. The surgical procedure was performed under local anesthesia and followed the All-on-4 approach with immediate loading of implants using a screw-retained provisional acrylic resin prosthesis on the same day. Final prosthesis was delivered four months after the surgery. Clinical and radiographic outcomes were evaluated at four- and twelve-months post-operation. The study reported a 95% implant survival rate using the All-on-4 technique. The mean marginal bone level was recorded at 0.35 mm and 0.66 mm during the 4 and 12-month follow-up periods, respectively. Fixed provisional prosthesis fracture, abutment, and prosthesis screw loosening were the most frequent mechanical complications reported. Within the limitations of this study, the use of computer-guided surgery in the All-on-4 technique seemed to be a promising treatment option with high implant survival rates that may help reduce post-surgical discomfort and mechanical complications in the rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla.

Background: Electrical conductivity of trabecular bone at 100 kHz was recently reported as a good predictor of bone volume fraction. However, to quantify its relationship with the free water (or physiological solution) content and between the conductivities of its constituents, is still unclear. Methods: In this contribution, in silico models inspired by microCT images of trabecular bovine samples were used to build realistic geometries. Finite Element Method was applied to solve the electrical problem and to robustly fit the conductivity of the constituents with literature data. The obtained effective electrical conductivity was compared to Bruggeman three media mixture model: physiological solution, bone marrow and bone matrix. Results: The values for physiological solution plus bone marrow and bone matrix that captured better the bone volume fraction in the two media Finite Element model were: σps+bm = 298.4 mS/m and σb = 21.0 mS/m, respectively. Additionally, relative good results were obtained by a three media Bruggeman mixture model with σbm= 103 mS/m, σb= 21.0 mS/m, and σps= 1200 mS/m. Simple linear relationships between the proportions of constituents depending on bone volume fraction were tested. Degree of anisotropy and fractal dimension do not show detectable changes in effective conductivity. Conclusions: These results provided some useful findings for simulation purposes: first, a higher value of electrical conductivity of bone marrow has to be used in order to obtain similar values to those experimental published data. Second, anisotropy is not detectable by conductivity measurements for small trabecular samples (cube 5 mm). Finally, the simulations presented here showed a relatively good fitting of the mixture Bruggeman model which potentially would allow both, accounting for the free water content and re-scaling the model for whole bone electrical simulations.

Regular inspections during construction work verify that the work completed is consistent with the plans and specifications and ensure that it is within the planned time and budget. This requires frequent physical site observations to independently measure and verify the completion percentage of the construction progress performed over periods of time. The current computer vision-based (CV) techniques for the measurement of as-built elements, predominantly use 3D laser scanning or 3D Photogrammetry modelling to determine the geometrical properties of as-built elements on construction sites. Both techniques require data acquisition from several positions and angles to generate sufficient information about the element’s coordinates making the deployment of these techniques on dynamic construction project sites a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a pipeline for automating the measurement of as-built components using artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision (CV) techniques. The pipeline requires a single image obtained with a stereo-camera system to measure the size of selected objects or as-built components. We demonstrate our approach by measuring the size of concrete walls and columns. The novelty of this work is attributed to the fully automated CV-based method for measuring any given element using a single image only. The proposed solution is suitable for use in measuring the sizes of as-built components of built assets. It has the potential to be further developed and integrated with BIM models for use on construction projects for progress monitoring.

To solve two key problems in the identification of people who are infected with COVID-19: the first problem is that the identification accuracy is not high enough. The second problem is that present identification method such as nucleic acid testing is expensive in many countries. Methods: So, I decided to design a fast identification method for COVID-19 patients which is based on deep learning. After the model (CoughNet) learns more than 6,000 cough spectrograms of both COVID-19 patients and normal people, the accuracy rate of identification of COVID-19 patients and normal people is higher than 99% in the test set. Structure: This paper is mainly divided into three parts: the first part introduces the main background and research status of the research; The second part introduces the research methods; The third part introduces the specific process of the experiment.

Susceptible, infective, recovered, and hospitalized/isolated individuals are placed on the cells of a nxn square lattice, where each cell is occupied by a single individual or is vacant. At discrete time units (typically one day each) all susceptibles and infectives execute a random movement and when a coincidence of the two types occurs the susceptible is converted to infective status according to some probability. Infectives are labelled by the number of days since originally infected. At each time increment the age label of the infectives is increased by one unit. When the label reaches a number like 15 or 20 days the susceptibles recover with some probability or become isolated/hospitalized. Upon reaching some age the latter types either recover or die. Probabilities for the movements and conversions from one status to another are implemented by random numbergeneration. Simulations were carried out to investigate the effect of several probability and age parameters, the size of population (proportional to nxn) and density (related to fraction of occupied cells), and the size of the movements. Mid-term gradual conversion of susceptibles to isolated was explored as intervention policy.

The growth of urban population, combined with an increase of extreme events due to climate changes call for a better understanding and representation of urban floods. Rainfall and infiltration are two important factors that affect the watershed response to a given precipitation event. In this paper, we evaluate the influence of the representation of infiltration and spatially variable rainfall on the computer simulation of the floods that affected the city of Hull, UK in June 2007. This work compares a uniform rainfall with one generated using Kriging with External Drift and a constant infiltration equal to the soil hydraulic conductivity with a neglected infiltration. The results of the four simulations are then compared with the flood extents observed by public authorities. It results that the computer model is able the reproduce the general dynamic of the flood and identify the main inundated areas. We found that neglecting the infiltration induce a better representation of this flood event. Furthermore, the use of radar rainfall results in an accuracy similar to the one obtained with a constant rainfall. This study indicates that when the spatial resolution of the rainfall data is low compared to the catchment size and the precipitation distribution is uniform, the spatial variability of the rainfall might not add significant information.

In Orch OR model ; using electromagnetic fields, the brain captures, stores and analyzes the information of the cells and then sends the necessary commands to them. If the cells undergo changes and become cancer cells, the information stored in the brain and the electromagnetic signals inside and outside it change. Based on these changes, tumor and cancer formation can be detected in the early stages, and by storing the right information in the brain; it created the context for sending appropriate messages to return the cells to a normal state.

Introduction: Adverse events related to vaccines are reactions that can lead to serious complications, in the present that we live at the publication of this article with the need to generate high rates of vaccination have been presented in the case of vaccine agents against COVID-19 adverse events, with thrombotic events being the most important. Case Presentation: This is a 37-year-old female patient who presents 11 days after ChAdOx1-S vaccination against COVID-19 presents with intense headache associated with symptoms of intracranial hypertension, she was initially taken to simple cranial tomography showing presence of cerebral edema and indirect signs of cerebral venous thrombosis, it is proposed to carry out cerebral angiography which showed the presence of thrombosis of both transverse venous sinuses, no hypercoagulability states were found in the laboratories, the immunological tests carried out for antiphospholipid syndrome were negative, the thrombotic event was associated with the ChAdOx1-S vaccine, later the patient was taken to thrombectomy by Neuroradiology, achieving complete channeling of both transverse venous sinuses. Conclusions: Adverse events associated with vaccination have been described with multiple vaccine agents, this component against COVID-19 is also an event to consider, knowing the pathophysiology of these events is essential to be able to reduce these risks and select the least risky agent. Despite this risk, vaccination remains the only cost-effective measure to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with COVID-19.

Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers a unique lens to study neuroanatomic support of human neurocognition and intelligence. A core mystery is the MRI explanation of individual differences in neurocognition and intelligence. The past four decades have seen great advancement in studying this century-long mystery, but the sample size and population-level studies limit the explanation at the individual level. The recent rise of big data and artificial intelligence offers novel opportunities. Yet, data sources, harmonization, study design, and interpretation need to be carefully considered. This review aims to summarize past work, discuss rising opportunities and challenges, and facilitate further investigations on machine intelligence inferring human intelligence.

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a significant risk factor for post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE). The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the injury-induced epileptogenesis are under under investigation. The dentate gyrus, a structure highly susceptible to injury, and has been implicated in the evolution of seizure development. Methods: Utilizing the murine unilateral focal control cortical impact (CCI) injury, we evaluated seizure onset using 24/7 EEG video analysis at 2-4 months post-injury. Cellular changes in the dentate gyrus and hilus of the hippocampus were quantified by non-biased stereology and Imaris image analysis to evaluate Prox1-positive cell migration, astrocyte branching and morphology, as well as neuronal loss at four months post-injury. Isolation of region-specific astrocytes and RNA-seq was performed to determine differential gene expression in PTE+ vs. PTE- that may comport with the epileptogenic process. Results: CCI injury resulted in 37% PTE+-incidence, which increased with injury severity and hippocampal damage. Histological assessments uncovered a significant loss of hilar interneurons that coincided with aberrant migration of Prox1-positive granule cells and reduced astroglial branching in PTE+ compared to PTE- mice. We uniquely identified Cst3 as a PTE+-specific gene signature in astrocytes across all brain regions. Conclusions: These findings suggest that epileptogenesis may emerge following TBI due to distinct aberrant cellular remodeling events and key molecular changes in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus.

We introduce a mission design for an interstellar expedition to nearby earth-like exoplanets, which our analysis determined to be Tau Ceti and Gliese 667C, at the time of analysis in 2013. We review the research problems in propulsion and AGI that must be addressed to launch an AI guided interstellar probe within 100 years. We propose a new semi-autonomous agent approach for intelligent control of the spacecraft. We introduce the concept of a semi-autonomous agent as having built-in safety guarantees that constrain operation. An autonomous agent case study is presented formulating the objective, constraints, AGI implementation of the agent based on Solomono's Alpha architecture, and adding specicity. We discuss the training required to reach human-level and trans-sapient levels of intelligence which corresponds to an entire crew of AI experts specialized in elds such as astrophysics, astromechanics, astrobiology, quantum physics, computer science, molecular biology, and so forth. We project the feasibility of the human-level AI technology based on empirical ndings in neuroscience, and nd that it should be feasible by 2030. We analyze Solomono's innity point hypothesis in light of Koomey's law about energy eciency of computing and nd that the trends in 2013 indicated an early singularity by 2035, which implies that we might encounter physical bottlenecks which will decelerate computing technology improvements signicantly. We recommend thus year 2040 for launching the probe by which date other required technologies will have been developed. We discuss the scenario of a virtual crew made of brain simulations, which is a bio-information based AI approach. We detail the subsystems of command and control, communication, scientic instrumentation, power, propulsion, navigation, and shielding. We propose a variation of ICAN-II/AIMStar propulsion which uses a positron source instead of anti-protons to initiate micro-fusion reactions. We combine the positron initiated fusion pulse propulsion scheme with a miniaturized version of the Daedelus fusion thruster obtaining high performance. We derive two mission proles one for fusion pulse propulsion, and the yet hypothetical Q-Thruster. Fusion thruster requires 132.2 years for Tau Ceti, and 233.2 years for Gliese 667C, while Q-Thruster takes only 42.3 years for Tau Ceti, and 62.5 years for Gliese 667C. We also discuss extended roles for intelligent interstellar probes such as self-reproduction via nanotechnology, refueling, construction, robotic bodies, and transmission of brain simulations.

There is evidence that spaceflight poses acute and late risks on the central nervous system. To explore possible mechanisms, the proteomic changes following spaceflight in mouse brain were characterized. Space Shuttle Atlantis (STS-135) was launched at the Kennedy Space Center on a 13-day mission. Within 3–5 hours after landing, brain tissue was collected to evaluate protein expression profiles using quantitative proteomic analysis. Our results showed that there were 26 proteins that were significantly altered after spaceflight in the grey and/or white matter. While there was no overlap between the white and grey matter in terms of individual proteins, there was overlap in terms of function, synaptic plasticity, vesical activity, protein/organelle transport, and metabolism. Our data demonstrate that exposure to the spaceflight environment induces significant changes in protein expression related to neuronal structure and metabolic function. This might lead to a significant impact on brain structural and functional integrity that could affect the outcome of space missions.

Exergames (EG) are interactive video games that require physical activity and use gamification to make exercise more engaging. EG interventions have shown various benefits for older adults, such as improved mental health, quality of life, and reduced fall risk. Enhanced cognition is thought to drive these benefits. This review aimed to identify neural correlates underlying cognitive improvements in healthy older adults and those with neurocognitive disorders. We systematically searched major databases and included 13 studies from 2,095 records. Findings revealed that EG interventions led to structural brain changes and improved functional connectivity in healthy adults, Parkinson patients, and those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Increased activity in the frontal, temporal, and precuneus regions during rest was specific to adults with neurocognitive disorders. Neuroplastic changes, such as elevated BDNF levels and increased neurovascular coupling, were observed in both groups. However, methodological limitations in some studies highlight the need for further high-quality research.

Traumatic Brain Injury represents a significant public health concern due to its role in traumatic death and disability, often caused by head impacts or rapid accelerations. Despite advancements in Finite Element Head Models, existing models primarily represent adult males, neglecting anatomical and physiological differences between genders and age groups. Additionally, the mechanistic roles of specific intracranial tissues, such as the dura mater, have conventionally been overlooked. To better understand the mechanical behavior of the brain and its injured regions in the context of TBI, including the dura mater, this study proposes the development of a Female Finite Element Head Model. This model, representative of a middle-aged female subject, was developed using medical image-derived geometry and finite element modeling techniques. The validation results demonstrate a similarity between the numerical displacement curves and those obtained experimentally. In the model with dura mater, the numerical results show analogous behavior to the experimental results, despite minimal variations in the amplitude of the curves. These advancements highlight the significance of including the dura mater in biomechanical brain modeling. Incorporating the dura mater in Finite Element Head Models produces more realistic results than models without it. This emphasizes the importance of enhancing biomechanical models to better represent anatomical complexity.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), including exosomes, microvesicles, and other lipid vesicles derived from cells, play a pivotal role in intercellular communication by transferring information between cells. EVs secreted by progenitor and stem cells have been associated with the therapeutic effects observed in cell-based therapies, and they also contribute to tissue regeneration following injury, such as in orthopedic surgery cases. This review briefly explores the involvement of EVs in tissue repair and nerve regeneration, their potential as drug carriers, and their significance in stem cell research and cell-based therapies. It underscores the importance for bioengineers to comprehend and manipulate EV activity to optimize the efficacy of tissue engineering and regenerative therapies.

The abnormal accumulation of cells in the human brain, if left untreated, may cause brain damage. Management and treatment of these tumours require an early and accurate diagnosis, while their prognostic characterisation can also be beneficial in the choice of care planning for the patient. CDSSs are being continuously developed and integrated into routine clinical practice as they assist clinicians and radiologists to deal with an enormous amount of medical data, reduce clinical errors, and improve diagnostic capabilities. They assist detection, classification, and grading of brain tumours as well as alerting physicians of requirement of change in treatment plans. The aim of this systematic review is to identify various CDSSs used in brain tumour diagnosis and prognosis, that rely on data captured by any imaging modality. Based on the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol, the literature search was conducted in PubMed and Engineering Village Compendex databases. This review examines various CDSS tool types, system features, techniques used, accuracy, and outcome, to provide the latest evidence available in the field of neuro-oncology. An overview of different types of CDSSs used to support clinical decision-making in the management and treatment of brain tumours, along with highlighting their benefits, challenges, and future perspectives has been provided.

The appearance of brain metastasis is the most serious complication of breast cancer with mostly fatal outcomes. To reach the brain, tumor cells need to pass the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The molecular mechanisms underlying penetration of the BBB are largely unknown. Previously we found that tumor-infiltrating T lymphocytes enhance the development of brain metastasis of estrogen receptor-negative (ER-) breast cancer. In the current study, we investigate the contribution of T lymphocytes and the IFN- pathway in enabling breast cancer cells to pass the in vitro BBB. CD8+ cells display the strongest stimulatory effect on breast cancer cell passage. We show that inhibition of the IFN- receptor in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells, or neutralization of soluble IFN-, impairs the in vitro trespassing of breast cancer cells. Importantly, we validated our findings using gene expression data of breast cancer patients. CXCL-9,-10,-11/CXCR3 axis, dependent on IFN- signaling activity, was overexpressed in primary breast cancer samples of patients who developed brain metastasis. The data support a role for T-lymphocytes and the IFN- pathway in the formation of brain metastasis of ER- breast cancer, and offer targets to design future therapies for preventing breast cancer cells to cross the BBB.

Malignant gliomas are the most common primary brain tumors in adults up to an extent of 78% of all primary malignant brain tumors. However, total surgical resection is almost unachievable due to considerable infiltrative ability of glial cells. The efficacy of current multimodal therapeutic strategies is, furthermore, limited by the lack of specific therapies against malignant cells, and, therefore, the prognosis these in patients is still very unfavorable. The limitation of conventional therapies, which may result from inefficient delivery of the therapeutic or contrast agent to brain tumors are major reasons for this unsolved clinical problem. The major problem in brain drug delivery is the presence of the blood brain barrier which limits the delivery of many chemotherapeutic agents. Nanoparticles, thanks to their chemical configuration, are able to go through the blood-brain barrier carrying drugs or genes targeted against gliomas. Carbon nanomaterials show distinct properties including electronic properties, penetrating capability on the cell membrane, high drug-loading and pH-dependent therapeutic unloading capacities, thermal properties, large surface area and easy modification with molecules, which render them as a suitable candidate to deliver drugs. In this review we will focus on the potential effectiveness of the use of carbon nanomaterials in the treatment of malignant gliomas discussing the current progress of in vitro and in vivo researches of carbon nanomaterials-based drug delivery to brain.

Head injury is among the most devastating types of injury, specifically called Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). There is need to diminish the morbidity related with TBI and to improve the outcome of patients suffering TBI. Among the improvements on the treatment of TBI, neuroprotection is one of the upcoming improvements. Citicoline has been used in the management of brain ischemia related disorders, such as TBI. Citicoline has biochemical, pharmacological, and pharmacokinetic characteristics that make it a potentially useful neuroprotective drug for the management of TBI. A short review of these characteristics is included in this paper. Also, a narrative review of almost all the published or communicated studies performed with this drug in the management of patients with head injury is included. Based on the results obtained in these clinical studies, it is possible to conclude that citicoline was able to accelerate recovery of consciousness and to improve the outcome of this kind of patients, with an excellent safety profile. Thus, citicoline could have a potential role in the management of TBI.

Current hypotheses implicate insulin resistance of the brain as a pathogenic factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, Parkinson’s disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, major depression, and traumatic brain injury. A variety of genetic, developmental, and metabolic abnormalities that lead to disturbances in the insulin receptor signal transduction may underlie insulin resistance. Insulin receptor substrate proteins are generally considered to be the node in the insulin signaling system that is critically involved in the development of insulin insensitivity during metabolic stress, hyperinsulinemia, and inflammation. Emerging evidence suggests that lower activation of the insulin receptor (IR) is another common, while less discussed, mechanism of insulin resistance in the brain. This review aims to discuss causes behind the diminished activation of IR in neurons, with a focus on the functional relationship between mitochondria and IR during early insulin signaling and the related roles of oxidative stress, mitochondrial hypometabolism, and glutamate excitotoxicity in the development of IR insensitivity to insulin.

Human language and social cognition are two key disciplines that have traditionally been studied as separate domains. However, emerging research from detailed studies of comparative animal behavior, human social behavior, language acquisition in children, social cognitive neuroscience, and the cognitive neuroscience of language suggest that language and social cognition are two deeply interrelated capacities of the human species. For instance, recent developmental studies on the acquisition of language in infants and young children, draw attention to the important crucial benefits associated with several different aspects of social stimulation for youngsters, including the quantity and quality of linguistic input, dyadic infant/child-to-parent verbal and non-verbal social interactions, and other important social cues integral for facilitating language learning and social bonding. Studies of the adult human brain further suggest a high degree of specialization for sociolinguistic information processing, memory retrieval, and comprehension, suggesting the function of these regions may link language with social cognition and social bonding. In effect, the social brain and social complexity hypotheses may jointly help to explain how neurotypical children and adults learn language, why autistic adults and children exhibit simultaneous deficits in language and social cognition, and why nonhuman primates and other animals with significant computational abilities do not acquire the capacity for language. But perhaps most critically, the following article argues that this and related research will allow scientists to generate a holistic profile and deeper understanding of the healthy adult social brain, while developing more innovative and effective diagnoses, prognoses, and treatments for maladies and deficits also associated with the social brain.

Brain models present a viewpoint on the fundamental structural components of the brain and their mutual organization, generally relative to a particular concept of the brain axis. A model may be based on adult brain structure or on developmental morphogenetic aspects. Brain models usually have functional implications, depending on which functional properties derive from the postulated organization. This essay examines the present scenario about brain models, emphasizing the contrast between columnar or other longitudinal models and transverse subdivisional neuromeric models. In each case, the main functional implications and apparent problems are explored and commented. Particular attention is given to the modern molecularly based ‘prosomeric model’, which postulates a set of 20 transverse prosomeres as the developmental units that serve to construct all the cerebral parts and the particular typology of many different neuronal populations within the forebrain and the hindbrain, plus a number of additional spinal cord units. These metameric developmental units (serially repeated, but with unique molecular profiles) confer to this model remarkable functional properties based mainly on its multiplicity and modularity. Many important brain functions can be decomposed into subfunctions attended to by combined sets of neuronal elements derived from different neuromeres. Each neuromere may participate in multiple functions. Most aspects related to creation of precise order in neural connections (axonal navigation and synaptogenesis) and function is due to the influence of neuromeric anteroposterior and dorsoventral positional information. Research on neuromeric functionality aspects is increasing significantly in recent times.

Light is an electromagnetic radiation that has visible and invisible wavelength spectrum. The visible light can only be detected by the eyes through the optic pathways. With the presence of scalp, cranium and meninges, the brain is seen as being protected from direct exposure to light. For that reason, the brain can be viewed as a black body lying inside a black box. In physics, a black body tends to be in thermal equilibrium with its environment and can tightly regulate its temperature via thermodynamics principles. Therefore, a healthy brain inside a black box should not get exposed to light. On the contrary, photobiomodulation, a form of light therapy to the brain has been shown to have beneficial effects for some neurological conditions. The proposed underlying mechanisms are multiple. Herein we present our intraoperative findings of rapid electrocorticographic brainwave changes when the brain was shone directly with different wavelengths of light during awake brain surgery. Our findings provide literature proof on light’s ability to influence human brain energy and function. Our proposed mechanism for these rapid changes is the presence of plasma-like energy inside the brain which causes fast brain activities that are akin to lightning strikes.
