Due to the complex underground environment, pumping machines are prone to produce numerous failures. The indicator diagrams of faults are similar in a certain degree, which produces indistinguishable samples. As the samples increases, manual diagnosis becomes difficult, which decreases the accuracy of fault diagnosis. For accurately and quickly judging the fault type, we propose an improved adaptive activation function and apply it to five types of neural networks. The adaptive activation function improves the negative semi-axis slope of the ReLU activation function by combining the gated channel conversion unit to improve the performance of the deep learning model. The proposed adaptive activation function is compared with the traditional activation function through the fault diagnosis data set and the public data set. The results show that the activation function has better nonlinearity, can improve the generalization performance of deep learning model, the accuracy of fault diagnosis. In addition, the proposed adaptive activation function can also be well embedded in other neural networks.

Near Earth Asteroids represent potential threats to human life because their trajectories may bring them in the proximity of the Earth. Monitoring these objects could help predict future impact events, but such efforts are hindered by the large numbers of objects that pass through the Earth’s vicinity. Additionally, there is also the problem of distinguishing asteroids from other objects in the night sky, which implies sifting through large sets of telescope image data. Within this context, we believe that employing machine learning techniques could greatly improve the detection process by sorting out the most likely asteroid candidates to be reviewed by human experts. At the moment, the use of machine learning techniques is still limited in the field of astronomy and the main goal of the present paper is to study the effectiveness of deep CNNs for the classification of astronomical objects, asteroids in this particular case, by comparing some of the well-known deep convolutional neural networks, including InceptionV3, Xception, InceptionResNetV2 and ResNet152V2. We have applied transfer learning and fine-tuning on these pre-existing deep convolutional networks and from the results that we have obtained one can see the potential of using deep convolutional neural networks in the process of asteroid classification. The InceptionV3 model has the best results in the asteroid class, meaning that by using it, we loose the least number of valid asteroids.

This paper proposes a multimodal fusion 3D target detection algorithm based on the attention mechanism to improve the performance of 3D target detection. The algorithm utilizes point cloud data and information from camera. For image feature extraction, the ResNet50+FPN architecture extracts features at four levels. Point cloud feature extraction employs the voxel method and FCN to extract point and voxel features. The fusion of image and point cloud features is achieved through regional point fusion and regional voxel fusion methods. After information fusion, the Coordinate attention mechanism and SimAM attention mechanism extract fusion features at a deep level. The algorithm's performance is evaluated using the DAIR-V2X dataset. The results show that compared to the Part-A2 algorithm, the proposed algorithm improves the mAP value by 7.9% in BEV view and 7.8% in 3D view at IOU=0.5 (cars) and IOU=0.25 (pedestrians and cyclist). At IOU=0.7 (cars) and IOU=0.5 (pedestrians and cyclist), the mAP value of the SECOND algorithm is improved by 5.4% in the BEV view and 4.3% in the 3D view, compared to other comparison algorithms.

The unique characteristics of frescoes on overseas Chinese buildings can attest to the integration and historical background of Chinese and Western cultures. Reasonable analysis and preservation of overseas Chinese frescoes can provide sustainable development for culture and history. This research adopts the image analysis technology based on artificial intelligence, and proposes a ResNet-34 model and method integrating transfer learning. This deep learning model can identify and classify the source of the frescoes of the emigrants, and can effectively deal with the problems such as the small number of fresco images on the emigrants' buildings, poor quality, difficulty in feature extraction, and similar pattern text and style. The experimental results show that the training process of the model proposed in this article is stable. On the constructed Jiangmen and Haikou fresco JHD datasets, the final accuracy is 98.41%, and the recall rate is 98.53%. The above evaluation indicators are superior to classic models such as AlexNet, GoogLeNet, and VGGNet. It can be seen that the model in this article has strong generalization ability and is not prone to overfitting. It can effectively identify and classify the cultural connotations and regions of frescoes.

Extracting railway tracks is crucial for creating electronic railway maps. Traditional methods require significant manual labor and resources, while existing neural networks have limitations in efficiency and precision. To address these challenges, a railway track extraction method using an improved DeepLabV3+ model is proposed, which incorporates several key enhancements. Firstly, the encoder part of the method utilizes the lightweight network MobileNetV3 as the backbone extraction network for DeepLabV3+. Secondly, the decoder part adopts the lightweight universal upsampling operator CARAFE for upsampling. Lastly, to address any potential extraction errors, morphological algorithms are applied to optimize the extraction results. Additionally, a dedicated railway track segmentation dataset is created to train and evaluate the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that the model achieves impressive performance on the railway track segmentation dataset and DeepGlobe dataset. The MIoU scores are 88.93% and 84.72%, with Recall values of 89.02% and 86.96%. Moreover, the overall accuracy stands at 97.69% and 94.84%. The algorithm's operation time is about 5% lower in comparison to the original network. Furthermore, the morphological algorithm effectively eliminates errors like holes and spots. These findings indicate the model's accuracy, efficiency, and the enhancement brought by the morphological algorithm in error elimination.

The creation of crop-type maps from satellite data has proven challenging, often impeded by a lack of accurate in-situ data. This paper aims to demonstrate a method for crop-type (ie. Maize, Wheat and Other) recognition based on Convolutional Neural Networks using a bottom-up approach. We trained the model with a highly accurate dataset of crowdsourced labelled street-level imagery. Classification results achieved an AUC of 0.87 for wheat, 0.85 for maize and 0.73 for other. Given that wheat and maize are the two most common food crops globally, combined with an ever-increasing amount of available street-level imagery, this approach could help address the need for improved crop-type monitoring globally. Challenges remain in addressing the noisy aspect of street-level imagery (ie. buildings, hedgerows, automobiles, etc.), where a variety of different objects tend to restrict the view and confound the algorithms

There is only a very short reaction time for people to find the best way out of a building in a fire outbreak. Software applications can be used to assist the rapid evacuation of victims; however, this is an arduous task, which requires an understanding of advanced technologies. Since well-known pathway algorithms (such as, Dijkstra, Bellman-Ford and A*) can lead to serious problems over performance, we decided to make use of deep reinforcement learning techniques. A wide range of strategies including a random initialization of replay buffer and transfer learning were assessed in three projects involving schools of different sizes. The results showed the proposal was viable and that in most cases the performance of transfer learning was superior. In addition, the study raised challenges that had to be faced in the future.

In this study, we present a statistical forecasting framework and assess its efficacy using a range of established machine learning algorithms for predicting Particulate Matter (PM) concentrations in the Arctic, specifically in Pallas (FI), Reykjavik (IS), and Tromso (NO). Our framework leverages historical ground measures and 24-hour predictions from 9 models provided by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) to provide PM predictions for the following 24 hours. Furthermore, we compare the performance of various memory cells based on artificial neural networks (ANN), including recurrent neural networks (RNNs), gated recurrent units (GRUs), long short-term memory networks (LSTMs), echo state networks (ESNs), and windowed multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs), which are commonly employed in time series forecasting tasks. Irrespective of the chosen memory cell type, our results demonstrate that the proposed framework consistently outperforms the CAM models in terms of mean squared error (MSE), with average improvements ranging from 25% to 40%. Additionally, we investigate the impact of outliers on the overall model performance.

We propose a deep reinforcement learning based manipulator path tracking method to solve the computationally difficult and non-unique problem of manipulator path tracking methods based on inverse kinematics. By transforming the path tracking task into a sequence decision problem, our method adopts an end-to-end learning method for closed-loop control and avoids the process of finding the inverse solution. We first explored the feasibility of the deep reinforcement learning method in the path tracking of the manipulator. After verifying the feasibility, the path tracking of the multi-degree-of-freedom(multi-DOF) manipulator was realized by combining the maximum entropy deep reinforcement learning algorithm. The experimental results show that our method has a good effect on the path tracking of the manipulator, which not only avoids the process of finding the inverse kinematics solution, but also requires no dynamic model. Therefore, we believe that our method has great significance in the study of manipulator path tracking.

We present a hierarchical reinforcement learning (RL) architecture that employs various low-level agents to act in the trading environment, i.e. the market. The highest level agent selects among a group of specialised agents, and then the selected agent decides when to sell or buy a single asset for some period. This period can be variable according to a termination function. We hypothesized that due to different market regimes, more than one single agent is needed when trying to learn from such heterogeneous data, and instead, multiple agents will perform better, with each one specialising in a subset of the data. We use $k-means$ clustering to partition the data and train each agent with a different cluster. Partitioning the input data also helps model-based RL (MBRL), where models can be heterogeneous. We also add two simple decision-making models to the set of low-level agents, diversifying the pool of available agents and thus increasing overall behaviour flexibility. We perform multiple experiments showing the strengths of a hierarchical approach and test various prediction models at both levels. We also use a risk-based reward at the high level, which transforms the overall problem into a risk-return optimization. This type of reward shows a significant reduction in risk while minimally reducing profits. Overall, the hierarchical approach shows significant promise, especially when the pool of low-level agents is highly diverse.

The synthesis 2-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol is of great significance because of its widely application in industry, and the development of highly efficient catalyst is necessary to the alkylation of p-cresol and tert-butyl alcohol. Here, an efficient and mild method was established, caprolactam was chosen as hydrogen-bonding acceptor, p-toluenesulfonic acid was employed as hydrogen-bonding donor, and deep eutectic solvent (DES) was prepared to catalyze the alkylation reaction. The structure of the DES catalyst was characterized by 1H NMR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis and fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR). In addition, response surface design based on Box-Behnken method was employed to optimize the alkylation reaction process parameters, the study of reaction kinetics was also carried out subsequently. The recycle performance of the catalyst was evaluated by recovery experiments, and a good result was obtained. Comparing with the literature reported, we here provide a mild method to the synthesis of 2-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol.

The intrinsic non-linearity and complexity of suspended sediment dynamics, which are impacted by the geographical variability of basin parameters and temporal climatic patterns, make it difficult to estimate suspended sediment concentration (SSC) accurately in hydrological processes. Deep neural networks (DNNs), a cutting-edge modeling method that can capture the innate non-linearity in hydrological systems, have emerged as a solution to this problem. Using primary data on discharge, SSC, and turbidity, the long short-term memory method of DNNs was employed in this study to simulate the discharge-suspended sediment connection for the Esopus Creek, NY, USA as the first objective. To develop effective modeling strategies, multiple scenarios of feature selection, including combinations of discharge, turbidity and SSC for preceding days, were considered. Secondly, the variations in SSC and discharge between the three USGS gages along Esopus Creek that were upper stream, lower stream, and downstream, adjacent to the pourpoint were analyzed. Statistical metrics and scenarios of feature importance were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the DNN-based models. The study shows that among 24 DNN approaches feature selection is crucial in simulating the daily SSC, and discharge and presenting novel research directions for utilizing machine learning algorithms in water quality.

Recently, new semantic segmentation and object detection methods have been proposed for direct processing of three-dimensional (3D) LiDAR sensor point clouds. LiDAR can produce highly accurate and detailed 3D maps of natural and man-made environments and is used for sensing in many contexts due to its ability to capture more information and its robustness to dynamic changes in the environment. In addition, the cost of LiDAR sensors has decreased in recent years, which is an important factor for many application scenarios. The challenge with 3D LiDAR sensors like the Velodyne HDL-64E S2 is that they can output large 3D data at up to 1,300,000 points per second, which is difficult to process in real time when applying complex algorithms and models for efficient semantic segmentation. Most existing approaches are either only suitable for relatively small point clouds or rely on computationally intensive sampling techniques to reduce their size. As a result, most of these methods do not work in real-time in realistic field robotics application scenarios, making them unsuitable for practical applications. Systematic point selection is a possible solution to reduce the amount of data to be processed, but although it is memory and computationally efficient, it selects only a small subset of points, which may result in important features being missed. To address this problem, we propose a new approach to semantic segmentation in forestry that uses a systematic sampling method in which the local neighbors of each point are retained to preserve geometric details. Our approach has been shown to process up to 1 million points in a single pass. It outperforms the state of the art in efficient semantic segmentation in large datasets such as Semantic3D. We also present a preliminary study on the performance of LiDAR-only data, i.e., intensity values from LiDAR sensors without RGB values for semi-autonomous robot perception.

The point cloud is a form of three-dimensional data that comprises various detailed features at multiple scales. Due to this characteristic and its irregularity, point cloud analysis based on deep learning is challenging. While previous works utilize the sampling-grouping operation of PointNet++ for feature description and then explore geometry by means of sophisticated feature extractors or deep networks, such operations fail to describe multi-scale features effectively. Additionally, these techniques have led to performance saturation. And it is difficult for standard MLPs to directly "mine" point cloud. To address above problems, we propose the Detail Activation (DA) module, which encodes data based on Fourier transform after sampling and grouping. We activate the channels at different frequency levels from low to high in the DA module to gradually recover finer point cloud details. As training progresses, the proposed Point-MDA can uncover local and global geometries of point cloud progressively. Our experiments show that Point-MDA achieves superior classification accuracy, outperforming PointNet++ by 3.3% and 7.9% in terms of overall accuracy on the ModelNet40 and ScanObjectNN dataset, respectively. Furthermore, it accomplishes this without employing complicated operations, while exploring the full potential of PointNet++.

Once on Mars, maintenance and repair will be crucial for humans as supply chains including Earth andMars will be very complex. Consequently, the raw material available on mars must be processed and used. Factors such as the energy available for material production play just as important a role as the quality of the material that can be produced and the quality of its surface. With the aim of developing and technically implementing a process chain that meets the challenge of producing spare parts from oxygen-reduced Mars regolith, this paper addresses the issue of low-energy handling. Expected statistically distributed high roughnesses of sintered regolith analogs are approximated in this work by parameter variation in the PBF-LB/M process. For low-energy handling, a dry-adhesive microstructure is used. Investigations are carried out to determine the extent to which the rough surface resulting from the manufacturing process can be smoothed by deep rolling in such a way that the microstructure adheres and enables samples to be transported. For the investigated AlSi10Mg samples (12 mm x 12 mm x 10 mm), the surface roughness varies in a wide range from Sa 7.7 µm to Sa 64 µm after the additive manufacturing process, pull-off stresses of up to 6.99 N/cm² could be realized after deep rolling. This represents an increase in pull-off stresses by a factor of 392.94 compared to the pull-off stresses before deep rolling, enabling handling of even larger specimens. It is noteworthy that specimens with roughness values that were previously difficult to handle can be treated post-deep rolling, indicating a potential influence of additional variables that describe roughness or ripples and are associated with the adhesion effect of the microstructure of the dry adhesive.

In the last decade, the genetic engineering world has been shaken up by a relatively new genetic editing tool based on RNA-guided Nucleases (RGNs): the CRISPR/Cas9 system. Since the first report in 1987 and its characterization in 2007 as a bacterial defense mechanism, the interest and research on this system have grown exponentially. CRISPR systems provide immunity to bacteria against invading genetic material; however, with specific modifications in sequence and structure, it becomes a precise editing system that makes it possible to genetically modify almost any organism. There are diverse approaches regarding the refinement of these modifications, such as constructing more accurate nucleases, understanding the cellular context and facing the epigenetic conditions, or re-designing guide RNAs (gRNAs). Considering the critical importance for the correct CRISPR/Cas9 systems performance, our scope will emphasize in the latter approach. Hence, we present an overview of the past and the most recent guide RNA web-based design tools, highlighting their computational architecture and gRNA characteristics evolution through the years. Our study concisely explains the computational approaches that use machine learning techniques, deep neural networks, and large datasets of gRNA/target interactions to make possible both predictions and classifications directed to design, optimize, and create promising gRNAs suitable for future gene therapies.

Deep-ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on AlGaN crystals have low light-emission efficiency; therefore, there is a need to improve this light-emission efficiency for a wide range of applications such as water and air sterilizations. UV-light-transparent device structures are considered one of the many solutions toward increasing light output power. To this end, the present study focused on developing a transparent AlGaN-based tunnel junction (TJ) as the anode of a deep-UV LED. Deep-UV LEDs composed of n+/p+-type AlGaN TJs were fabricated under the growth condition that reduced the carrier compensation in the n+-type AlGaN layers. The operating voltage was 10.8 V under the direct current (DC) operation of 63 A/cm2. In addition, magnesium zinc oxide (MgZnO)/Al reflective electrodes were fabricated to enhance the output power of the AlGaN homoepitaxial TJ LED. The output power was 57.3 mW under a DC operation of 63 A/cm2, and it was 1.7 times higher than that realized using the conventional Ti/Al electrodes. The combination of the AlGaN-based TJ and MgZnO/Al reflective contact allows further improvement of the light output power. This study confirms that the AlGaN TJ is a promising UV-transmittance structure that can obtain a high light-extraction efficiency.

The application of machine learning techniques to satellite imagery has been the subject of interest in recent years. The increase in quality and quantity of images, made available by Earth observation programs, such as the Copernicus program, led to the generation of large amounts of data. Among the various applications of this data is the creation of land cover maps. The present work aimed to create machine learning models capable of accurately segment and classify satellite images, to automatically generate a land cover map of the Portuguese territory. Several experiments were carried out with the spectral bands of the Sentinel-2 satellite, with vegetation indices, and with several sets of land cover classes. Three machine learning architectures were evaluated, which adopt two different techniques for image classification. One of the classification techniques follows an object-oriented approach, and in this case the architecture adopted in our models was a U-Net artificial neural network. The other classification technique is pixel-oriented, and the machine learning models tested were random forest and support vector machine. The overall accuracy of the results obtained ranged from 68.6% to 94.75%, depending strongly on the number of classes into which the land cover is classified. The result of 94.75% was obtained when classifying the land cover only into 5 classes. However, a very interesting accuracy of 92.37% was achieved by the model when trained to classify 8 classes. These results are superior to those reported in the related bibliography.

Translation of basic animal research to find effective methods of diagnosing and treating human neurological disorders requires parallel analysis infrastructures. Small animals such as mice provide exploratory animal disease models. However, many interventions developed using small animal models fail to translate to human use due to physical or biological differences. Recently, large-animal minipigs have emerged in neuroscience due to both brain similarity and economic advantages. Medical image processing is a crucial part of research as it allows researchers to monitor their experiments and understand disease development. However, although many algorithms are created and optimized for MR analysis of human data, those tools are not directly applicable or sufficiently sensitive to measure minipig data. In this work, we propose PigSNIPE - a pipeline for the automated handling, processing, and analyzing of large-scale data sets of minipig MR images. The pipeline allows for image registration, AC-PC alignment, landmark detection, skull stripping, brainmasks and intracranial volume segmentation (DICE 0.98), tissue segmentation (DICE 0.82), and caudate-putamen brain segmentation (DICE 0.8) in under two minutes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first automated pipeline tool aimed at large animal images.

Intracranial hemorrhage is a serious medical problem that requires rapid and often intensive medical care. Identifying the location and type of any hemorrhage present is a critical step in the treatment of the patient. Diagnosis requires an urgent procedure, and the detection of hemorrhage is a difficult and time-consuming process for human experts. In this paper, we propose methods based on EfficientDet’s deep-learning technology that can be applied to the diagnosis of hemorrhages and thus become a decision-support system. Our proposal is two-fold. On the one hand, the proposed technique classifies slices of computed tomography scans for the presence hemorrhage or its lack, achieving 92.7% accuracy and 0.978 ROC-AUC. On the other hand, our methodology provides visual explanations of the classification chosen using the Grad-CAM methodology.

Sparse reward long horizon task is a major challenge for deep reinforcement learning algorithm. One of the key barriers is data-inefficiency. Even in the simulation environment, it usually takes weeks to training the agent. In this study, a data-efficiency training framework is proposed, where a curriculum learning is design for the agent in the simulation scenario. Different distributions of the initial state are set for the agent to get more informative reward during the whole training process. A fine-tuning of the parameters in the output layer of the neural network for value function is conduct to bridge the gap between sim-to-real. An experiment of UAV maneuver control is conducted in the proposed training framework to verify the method more efficient. We demonstrate that data-efficiency is different for the same data in different training stages.

According to the World Health Organization, about 15% of the world’s population has some form of disability. Assistive Technology, in this context, contributes directly to the overcoming of difficulties encountered by people with disabilities in their daily lives, allowing them to receive education and become part of the labor market and society in a worthy manner. Assistive Technology has made great advances in its integration with Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) devices. AIoT processes and analyzes the large amount of data generated by IoT devices and applies Artificial Intelligence models, specifically Machine Learning, to discover patterns for generating insights and assisting in decision making. Based on a systematic literature review, this article aims at identifying the Machine Learning models used in multiple different research about Artificial Intelligence of Things applied to Assistive Technology. The survey of the topics approached in this article also highlights the context of such research, their application, IoT devices used, and gaps and opportunities for further development. Survey results show that 50% of the analyzed research address visual impairment, and for this reason, most of the topics cover issues related to computational vision. Portable devices, wearables, and smartphones constituted the majority of IoT devices. Deep Neural Networks represent 81% of the Machine Learning models applied in the reviewed research.

Stellar NGC 6853, also known as the Dumbbell Nebula, is a remarkable example of an elliptical morphological type 1 multiple shell planetary nebula, which is now in one of its last evolutionary stages. This project focuses on examining the distinct varieties of the nebula temperatures and densities using observation data from the Issac Newton Group of Telescopes and comparing them with the observation data from Observatoire de Haute Provence from 14th to 18th of October 2019, with a primary focus on the data from the Issac Newton Telescope (INT). The densities ranged from diffused regions of 376.63 ± 228.97 atoms per cm³ to dense regions of 6441.11 ± 228.90 atoms per cm³; these values are slightly lower approximately by 2000 than the values from the Observatoire de Haute Provence. The radial velocity and the expansion velocity were also calculated using the spectroscopic data and were found to be 29.50 ± 0.38 km⁻¹ and 37.40 ± 0.38 km⁻¹ respectively. This result is expected from a multi-shell nebula that consists of the main body and surrounding halo

Histologically poor differentiation is associated with lymph node metastasis. Thus, pathological evaluation of biopsy specimens is crucial when treating stomach cancers. Deep learning of WSIs is challenging because the images are enormous. Given the computing limitations, patch-level supervised learning methods have been proposed. However, valuable information is lost when dividing WSIs into smaller patches. Another drawback is the need for pixel-level annotation by a pathologist. It is acceptable to differentiate, i.e., grade, gastric cancer at the holistic tissue level (i.e., under low magnification). We developed a weakly supervised learning technique for tissue-level gastric adenocarcinoma histological differentiation (well-to-moderately or poorly differentiated) and applied global reasoning to tissue-level features. The tissue-level AUROCs of the histological differentiation classifiers were 0.953, 0.969, and 0.943, respectively when data from five hospitals were subjected to threefold cross-validation. Comparison of the Grad-CAM heatmaps of the trained classifier and the pathologists’ annotations confirmed that our weakly supervised model exhibited performed well.

A modern definition of “deep sleep” is elusive despite being ubiquitously appreciated as an important physiological state supporting health and homeostasis. In modern times, human deep sleep is identified by specific bioelectric signatures in the electroencephalogram (EEG) emerging somewhere between periods of wakefulness. However, deep sleep has been used to describe states of quiescence well before the first electrical brain recordings in the late 1800s, highlighting its own evolution in both lay and medical literature. Furthermore, EEG states are not only ill-defined in most mammals outside of humans and laboratory rodents, but non-existent in some invertebrates. Given that all organisms rest and do so with seemingly well-defined utility, it remains a challenge linguistically, scientifically, and comparatively define what “deep sleep” means—or what it should—in a research context. Here, I explore standard definitions of deep sleep from a modern, comparative perspective, and discuss potential problems of using a strict and narrow definition of such a fleeting concept that has historically undergone significant updates. Finally, I suggest a path towards resolving inconsistencies around the meaning of “deep sleep” and consider whether it is truly reflected by any one measure.

Near-surface humidity (Qa) is a key parameter that modulates oceanic evaporation and influences the global water cycle. Remote sensing observations act as feasible sources for long-term and large-scale Qa monitoring. However, existing satellite Qa retrieval models are subject to apparent uncertainties due to model errors and insufficient training data. Based on in situ observations collected over the China Seas over the last two decades, a deep learning approach named Ensemble Mean of Target deep neural networks (EMTnet) was proposed to improve the satellite Qa retrieval over the China Seas for the first time. The EMTnet model outperforms five representative existing models by nearly eliminating the mean bias and significantly reducing the root-mean-square error in satellite Qa retrieval. According to its target deep neural networks selection process, the EMTnet model can obtain more objective learning results when the observational data are divergent. The EMTnet model was subsequently applied to produce a 30-year monthly gridded Qa data over the China Seas. It indicates that the climbing rate of Qa over the China Seas under the background of global warming are probably underestimated by current products.

In videos, the human's actions are of three-dimensional (3D) signals. These videos investigate the spatiotemporal knowledge of human behavior. The promising ability is investigated using 3D convolution neural networks (CNNs). The 3D CNNs have not yet achieved high output for their well-established two-dimensional (2D) equivalents in still photographs. Board 3D Convolutional Memory and Spatiotemporal fusion face training difficulty preventing 3D CNN from accomplishing remarkable evaluation. In this paper, we implement Hybrid Deep Learning Architecture that combines STIP and 3D CNN features to enhance the performance of 3D videos effectively. After implementation, the more detailed and deeper charting for training in each circle of space-time fusion. The training model further enhances the results after handling complicated evaluations of models. The video classification model is used in this implemented model. Intelligent 3D Network Protocol for Multimedia Data Classification using Deep Learning is introduced to further understand space-time association in human endeavors. In the implementation of the result, the well-known dataset, i.e., UCF101 to, evaluates the performance of the proposed hybrid technique. The results beat the proposed hybrid technique that substantially beats the initial 3D CNNs. The results are compared with state-of-the-art frameworks from literature for action recognition on UCF101 with an accuracy of 95%.

Objective A trained T1 class Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model will be used to examine its ability to successfully identify motor imagery when fed pre-processed electroencephalography (EEG) data. In theory, and if the model has been trained accurately, it should be able to identify a class and label it accordingly. The CNN model will then be restored and used to try and identify the same class of motor imagery data using much smaller sampled data in an attempt to simulate live data. Approach PyCharm, a Python platform, will be used to house and process the CNN. The raw data used for the training of the CNN will be sourced from the PhysioBank website. The EEG signal data will then be pre-processed using Brainstorm software that is a toolbox used in conjunction with MATLAB. The sample data used to validate and test the trained CNN, will be also be extracted from Brainstorm but in a much smaller size compared to the training data which is comprised of thousands of images. The sample size would be comparable to a person wearing a Brain Computer Interface (BCI), offering approximately 20 seconds of motor imagery signal data. Results The raw EEG data was successfully extracted and pre-processed. The deep learning model was trained using the extracted image data along with their corresponding labels. After training, it was able to accurately identify the T1 class label at 100 percent. The python coding was then modified to restore the trained model and feed it test sample data in which it was found to recognise 6 out of 10 lines of T1 signal image data. The result suggested that the initial training of the model required a different, more varying approach, so that it would be able to detect varying sample signal image data. The outcome of which could mean that the model could be used in applications for multiple patients wearing the same BCI hardware to control a device or interface.

The robust control of high precision electromechanical systems, such as micropositioners, is challenging in terms of the inherent high nonlinearity, the sensitivity to external interference, and the complexity of accurate identification of the model parameters. To cope with these problems, this work investigates a disturbance observer-based deep reinforcement learning control strategy to realize high robustness and precise tracking performance. Reinforcement learning has shown great potential as optimal control scheme, however, its application in micropositioning systems is still rare. Therefore, embedded with the integral differential compensator (ID), deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) is utilized in this work with the ability to not only decrease the state error but also improves the transient response speed. In addition, an adaptive sliding mode disturbance observer (ASMDO) is proposed to further eliminate the collective effect caused by the lumped disturbances. The sterling performance is revealed with intensive tracking simulation experiments and demonstrates the improvement in the accuracy and response time of the controller.

Recent progress in microfabrication technique allowed the rapid development of neural implants. They are getting categorized as effective tools for clinical practice, especially to treat traumatic and neurodegenerative disorders. Microelectrode arrays already have been used in numerous neural interface devices. Basically, almost all neural implants have been developed based on BCI (Brain Computer Interface) system. When BCI system falls under invasive technique, it is referred as BMI or Brain Machine Interface. BMIs hold promises for neurorehabilitation of motor and sensory function, cognitive state evaluation and treatment of neurological chaos. A directed overview of the field of neural implants is discussed in this article. The aim of this review is to give a brief introduction of neural prosthetics as well as their exciting applications in treating neurological disorders and a deep discussion on their functionality are mentioned. BCI system and their different types, their functionality, their pros and cons, how other neural implants developed, and their present status have been covered. Different possibilities and possible future of deep brain stimulation (DBS), Neuralink, motor and sensory neural prosthetics are further discussed.

The use of Attitude and Heading Reference Systems (AHRS) for orientation estimation is now common practice in a wide range of applications, e.g., robotics and human motion tracking, aerial vehicles and aerospace, gaming and virtual reality, indoor pedestrian navigation and maritime navigation. The integration of the high-rate measurements can provide very accurate estimates, but these can suffer from errors accumulation due to the sensors drift over longer time scales. To overcome this issue, inertial sensors are typically combined with additional sensors and techniques. As an example, camera-based solutions have drawn a large attention by the community, thanks to their low-costs and easy hardware setup; moreover, impressive results have been demonstrated in the context of Deep Learning. This work presents the preliminary results obtained by DOES , a supportive Deep Learning method specifically designed for maritime navigation, which aims at improving the roll and pitch estimations obtained by common AHRS. DOES recovers these estimations through the analysis of the frames acquired by a low-cost camera pointing the horizon at sea. The training has been performed on the novel ROPIS dataset, presented in the context of this work, acquired using the FrameWO application developed for the scope. Promising results encourage to test other network backbones and to further expand the dataset, improving the accuracy of the results and the range of applications of the method.

The vehicular technology has integrated many features in the system, which enhances the safety and comfort of the user. Among these features, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) is the only feature that maintains the set cabin air temperature (CAT). The user’s command drives the set CAT, and the thermostat provides feedback to the HVAC to maintain the set CAT. The CAT is increased by extracting the heat from the engine surface produced by the fuel combustion, whereas the CAT is reduced by the known processes of the air conditioning system (ACS). Therefore, the CAT driven by the user’s command may not be optimal, and estimating the optimal CAT is still unsolved. In this work, the user was allowed to input a range for CAT instead of a single value. Optimal HVAC criteria were defined, and the CAT was estimated by performing iterative analysis in the user-selected range satisfying the criteria. The HVAC criteria were defined based on two measurable parameters: air conditioning refrigerant fluid pressure (ACRFP) and engine surface temperature (EST) empirically defined as the vector CATOP. In this article, a NARX DL model by mapping the vehicle-level vectors (VLV) to predict the CATOP in real-time using field data obtained from a 2020 Cadillac CT5 test vehicle. Utilising the DL model, CATOP for future time steps were predicted by varying the CAT in the definite range and applying HVAC criteria. Thus, an optimal set CAT was estimated, corresponding to the optimal CATOP defined by the HVAC criteria. We performed the validation of the DL model for multiple datasets using traditional statistical techniques, namely, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values, first-order derivatives (FOD), and root-mean-square error (RMSE).

Over a billion people live in slums, with poor sanitation, education, property rights and working conditions having direct impact on current residents and future generations. A key problem in relation to slums is slum mapping. Without delineations of where all slum settlements are, informed decisions cannot be made by policymakers in order to benefit the most in need. Satellite images have been used in combination with machine learning models to try and fill the gap in data availability of slum locations. Deep learning has been used on RGB images with some success but since labeled satellite images of slums are relatively low quality and the physical/visual manifestation of slums significantly varies within and across countries, it is important to quantify the uncertainty of predictions for reliable application in downstream tasks. Our solution is to train Monte Carlo dropout U-Net models on multispectral 13-band Sentinel-2 images from which we can calculate pixelwise epistemic (model) and aleatoric (data) uncertainty in our predictions. We trained our model on labelled images of Mumbai and verified our epistemic and aleatoric uncertainty quantification approach using altered models trained on modified datasets. We also used SHAP values to investigate how the different features contribute towards the model’s predictions and this showed that certain short-wave infrared and red-edge image bands are powerful features for determining the locations of slums within images. Having created our model with uncertainty quantification, in the future it can be applied to downstream tasks and decision-makers will know where predictions have been made with low uncertainty, giving them greater confidence in its deployment.

Existing methods for building extraction from remotely sensed images strongly rely on aerial or satellite-based images with very high resolution, which are usually limited by spatiotemporally accessibility and cost. In contrast, relatively low-resolution images have better spatial and temporal availability but cannot directly contribute to fine- and/or high-resolution building extraction. In this paper, based on image super-resolution and segmentation techniques, we propose a two-stage framework (SRBuildingSeg) for achieving super-resolution (SR) building extraction using relatively low-resolution remotely sensed images. SRBuildingSeg can fully utilize inherent information from the given low-resolution images to achieve high-resolution building extraction. In contrast to the existing building extraction methods, we first utilize an internal pairs generation module (IPG) to obtain SR training datasets from the given low-resolution images and an edge-aware super-resolution module (EASR) to improve the perceptional features, following the dual-encoder building segmentation module (DES). Both qualitative and quantitative experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach is capable of achieving high-resolution (e.g. 0.5 m) building extraction results at 2×, 4× and 8× SR. Our approach outperforms 8 other methods with respect to the extraction result of mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) values by a ratio of 9.38%, 8.20% and 7.89% with SR ratio factors of 2, 4, and 8, respectively. The results indicate that the edges and borders reconstructed in super-resolved images serve a pivotal role in subsequent building extraction and reveal the potential of the proposed approach to achieve super-resolution building extraction. Graphically-rich applications such as games are ubiquitous with attractive visual effects of Graphical User Interface (GUI) that offers a bridge between software applications and end-users. However, various types of graphical glitches may arise from such GUI complexity and have become one of the main component of software compatibility issues. Our study on bug reports from game development teams in NetEase Inc. indicates that graphical glitches frequently occur during the GUI rendering and severely degrade the quality of graphically-rich applications such as video games. Existing automated testing techniques for such applications focus mainly on generating various GUI test sequences and check whether the test sequences can cause crashes. These techniques require constant human attention to captures non-crashing bugs such as bugs causing graphical glitches. In this paper, we present the first step in automating the test oracle for detecting non-crashing bugs in graphically-rich applications. Specifically, we propose GLIB based on a code-based data augmentation technique to detect game GUI glitches. We perform an evaluation of GLIB on 20 real-world game apps (with bug reports available) and the result shows that GLIB can achieve 100\% precision and 99.5\% recall in detecting non-crashing bugs such as game GUI glitches. Practical application of GLIB on another 14 real-world games (without bug reports) further demonstrates that GLIB can effectively uncover GUI glitches, with 48 of 53 bugs reported by GLIB having been confirmed and fixed so far.

Recommender systems have been applied in a wide range of domains such as e-commerce, media, banking, and utilities. This kind of system provides personalized suggestions based on large amounts of data in order to increase user satisfaction. These suggestions help client select products, while organizations can increase the consumption of a product. In the case of social data, sentiment analysis can help gain better understanding of a user’s attitudes, opinions and emotions, which is beneficial to integrate in recommender systems for achieving higher recommendation reliability. On the one hand, this information can be used to complement explicit ratings given to products by users. On the other hand, sentiment analysis of items that can be derived from online news services, blogs, social media or even from the recommender systems themselves is seen as capable of providing better recommendations to users. In this study, we present and evaluate a recommendation approach that integrates sentiment analysis into collaborative filtering methods. The recommender system proposal is based on an adaptive architecture, which includes improved techniques for feature extraction and deep learning models based on sentiment analysis. The results of the empirical study performed with two popular datasets show that sentiment–based deep learning models and collaborative filtering methods can significantly improve the recommender system’s performance.

In this paper, we propose a new methodology for crack monitoring in concrete structures. This approach is based on a n this paper, we propose a new methodology for monitoring cracks in concrete structures. This approach is based on a multi-resolution analysis of a sample or a specimen of the studied material subjected to several types of solicitation. The image obtained by ultrasonic investigation and processing by a dedicated wavelet will be analyzed according to several scales in order to detect internal cracks and crack initiation. The ultimate goal of this work is to propose an automatic crack type identification scheme based on convolutional neural networks (CNN). In this context, crack propagation can be monitored without access to the concrete surface and the goal is to detect cracks before they are visible on the concrete surface. The key idea allowing such a performance is the combination of two major data analysis tools which are wavelets and Deep Learning. This original procedure allows to reach a high accuracy close to 0.90. In this work, we have also implemented another approach for automatic detection of external cracks by deep learning from publicly available datasets.

This work aims to contribute to better understanding the use of public street spaces. (1) Background: In this sense, with a multidisciplinary approach, the objective of this work is to propose an experimental and reproducible method on a large scale. (2) Study area: The applied methodology uses artificial intelligence to analyze Google Street View (GSV) images at street level. (3) Method: The purpose is to validate a methodology that allows to characterize and quantify the use (pedestrians and cars) of some squares in Rome belonging to different historical periods. (4) Results: Through the use of machine vision techniques, typical of artificial intelligence and which use convolutional neural networks, a historical reading of some selected squares is proposed with the aim of interpreting the dynamics of use and identifying some critical issues in progress. (5) Conclusions: This work validated the usefulness of a method applied to the use of artificial intelligence for the analysis of GSV images at street level.

Training data for a deep learning (DL) neural network (NN) controller are obtained from the input and output signals of a conventional digital controller that is designed to provide the suitable control signal to a specified plant within a feedback digital control system. It is found that if the DL controller is sufficiently deep (four hidden layers), it can outperform the conventional controller in terms of settling time of the system output transient response to a unit-step reference signal. That is, the DL controller introduces a damping effect. Moreover, it does not need to be retrained to operate with a reference signal of different magnitude, or under system parameter change. Such properties make the DL control more attractive for applications that may undergo parameter variation, like sensor networks.

As the development of high-throughput technologies, more and more high-dimensional or ultra high-dimensional genomic data are generated. Therefore, how to make effective analysis of such data becomes a challenge. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have been widely applied for modelling nonlinear and complicated interactions in a variety of practical fields such as high-dimensional survival data. Recently, the multilayer deep neural network (DNN) models have made remarkable achievements. Thus, a Cox-based DNN prediction survival model (DNNSurv model) , which was built with Keras and Tensorflow, was developed. However, its results were only evaluated to the survival datasets with high-dimensional or large sample sizes. In this paper, we evaluate the prediction performance of the DNNSurv model using ultra high-dimensional and high-dimensional survival datasets, and compare it with three popular ML survival prediction models (i.e., random survival forest and Cox-based LASSO and Ridge models). For this purpose we also present the optimal setting of several hyper-parameters including selection of tuning parameter. The proposed method demonstrates via data analysis that the DNNSurv model performs overall well as compared with the ML models, in terms of three main evaluation measures (i.e., concordance index, time-dependent Brier score and time-dependent AUC) for survival prediction performance.

Layer-wise 3D surface morphology information is critical for the quality monitoring and control of additive manufacturing (AM) processes. However, most of the existing 3D scan technologies are either contact or time consuming, which are not capable of obtaining the 3D surface morphology data in a real-time manner during the process. Therefore, the objective of this study is to achieve real-time 3D surface data acquisition in AM, which is achieved by a supervised deep learning-based image analysis approach. The key idea of this proposed method is to capture the correlation between 2D image and 3D point cloud, and then quantify this relationship by using a deep learning algorithm, namely, convolutional neural network (CNN). To validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method, both simulation and real-world case studies were performed. The results demonstrate that this method has strong potential to be applied for real-time surface morphology measurement in AM, as well as other advanced manufacturing processes.

Segmentation of Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) of abdominal organs is useful for analysis prior to surgical procedures and for further processing. Deep Learning (DL) has become the standard, researchers have proposed improvements that include multiple views, ensembles and voting. Loss function alternatives, while being crucial to guide automated learning, have not been compared in detail. In this work we analyze limitations of popular metrics and their use as loss, study alternative loss variations based on those and other modifications and search for the best approach. An experimental setup was necessary to assess the alternatives. Results for the top scoring network and top scoring loss show improvements between 2 and 11 percentage points (pp) in Jaccard Index (JI), depending on organ and patient (sequence), for a total of 22 pp over 4 organs, all this being obtained just by choosing the best performing loss function instead of cross-entropy or dice. Our results apply directly to MRI of abdominal organs, with important practical implications for other architectures, as they can be applied easily to any of them. They also show the worth of variants of loss function and loss tuning, with future work needed to generalize and test in other contexts.

Recently deep cross-modal hashing networks have received increasing interests due to its superior query efficiency and low storage cost. However, most of existing methods concentrate less on hash representations learning part, which means the semantic information of data cannot be fully used. Furthermore, they may neglect the high-ranking relevance and consistency of hash codes. To solve these problems, we propose a Self-Attention and Adversary Guided Hashing Network (SAAGHN). Specifically, it employs self-attention mechanism in hash representations learning part to extract rich semantic relevance information. Meanwhile, in order to keep invariability of hash codes, adversarial learning is adopted in the hash codes learning part. In addition, to generate higher-ranking hash codes and avoid local minima early, a new batch semi-hard cosine triplet loss and a cosine quantization loss are proposed. Extensive experiments on two benchmark datasets have shown that SAAGHN outperforms other baselines and achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

State-of-the-art remote sensing scene classification methods employ different Convolutional Neural Network architectures for achieving very high classification performance. A trait shared by the majority of these methods is that the class associated with each example is ascertained by examining the activations of the last fully connected layer, and the networks are trained to minimize the cross-entropy between predictions extracted from this layer and ground-truth annotations. In this work, we extend this paradigm by introducing an additional output branch which maps the inputs to low dimensional representations, effectively extracting additional feature representations of the inputs. The proposed model imposes additional distance constrains on these representations with respect to identified class representatives, in addition to the traditional categorical cross-entropy between predictions and ground-truth. By extending the typical cross-entropy loss function with a distance learning function, our proposed approach achieves significant gains across a wide set of benchmark datasets in terms of classification, while providing additional evidence related to class membership and classification confidence.

We present a method to improve the reconstruction and generation performance of variational autoencoder (VAE) by injecting an adversarial learning. On the other hand, instead of comparing the reconstructed with the original data to calculate the reconstruction loss, we use a consistency principle for deep features. The training process of the VAE is then divided into two steps, training the encoder and then training the decoder. By using this two-step learning process, our method can be more widely used in applications other than image processing. While training the encoder, the label information is integrated to better structure the latent space in a supervised way. The adversarial constraints allow the decoder to generate data with better authenticity and more realistic than the conventional VAE. We present experimental results to show that our method gives better performance than the original VAE.

The traditional standards employed for pain assessment have many limitations. One such limitation is reliability because of inter-observer variability. Therefore, there have been many approaches to automate the task of pain recognition. Recently, deep-learning methods have appeared to solve many challenges, such as feature selection and cases with a small number of data sets. This study provides a systematic review of pain-recognition systems that are based on deep-learning models for the last two years only. Furthermore, it presents the major deep-learning methods that were used in review papers. Finally, it provides a discussion of the challenges and open issues.

This last decade, the amount of data exchanged in the Internet increased by over a staggering factor of 100, and is expected to exceed well over the 500 exabytes by 2020. This phenomenon is mainly due to the evolution of high speed broadband Internet and, more specifically, the popularization and wide spread use of smartphones and associated accessible data plans. Although 4G with its long-term evolution (LTE) technology is seen as a mature technology, there is continual improvement to its radio technology and architecture such as in the scope of the LTE Advanced standard, a major enhancement of LTE. But for the long run, the next generation of telecommunication (5G) is considered and is gaining considerable momentum from both industry and researchers. In addition, with the deployment of the Internet of Things (IoT) applications, smart cities, vehicular networks, e-health systems, and Industry 4.0, a new plethora of 5G services has emerged with very diverging and technologically challenging design requirements. These include: high mobile data volume per area, high number of devices connected per area, high data rates, longer battery life for low-power devices, and reduced end-to-end latency. Several technologies are being developed to meet these new requirements. Among these we list ultra-densification, millimeter Wave usage, antennas with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), antenna beamforming to increase spacial diversity, edge/fog computing, among others. Each of these technologies brings its own design issues and challenges. For instance, ultra-densification and MIMO will increase the complexity to estimate channel condition and traditional channel state information (CSI) estimation techniques are no longer suitable due to the complexity of the new scenarios. As a result, new approaches to evaluate network condition such as by continuously collecting and monitoring key performance indicators become necessary. Timely decisions are needed to ensure the correct operation of such network. In this context, deep learning (DL) models could be seen as one of the main tools that can be used to process monitoring data and automate decisions. As these models are able to extract relevant features from raw data (images, texts, and other types of unstructured data), the integration between 5G and DL looks promising and one that requires exploring. As main contributions, this paper presents a systematic review about how DL is being applied to solve some 5G issues. We examine data from the last decade and the works that addressed diverse 5G problems, such as physical medium state estimation, network traffic prediction, user device location prediction, self network management, among others. We also discuss the main research challenges when using DL models in 5G scenarios and identify several issues that deserve further consideration.

Face recognition is a valuable forensic tool for criminal investigators since it certainly helps in identifying individuals in scenarios of criminal activity like fugitives or child sexual abuse. It is, however, a very challenging task as it must be able to handle low-quality images of real world settings and fulfill real time requirements. Deep learning approaches for face detection have proven to be very successful but they require a large computation power and processing time. In this work, we evaluate the speed-accuracy tradeoff of three popular deep-learning-based face detectors on the WIDER Face and UFDD data sets in several CPUs and GPUs. We also develop a regression model capable to estimate the performance, both in terms of processing time and accuracy. We expect this to become a very useful tool for the end user in forensic laboratories in order to estimate the performance for different face detection options. Experimental results showed that the best speed-accuracy tradeoff is achieved with images resized to 50% of the original size in GPUs and images resized to 25% of the original size in CPUs. Moreover, performance can be estimated using multiple linear regression models with a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.113 what is very promising for the forensic field.

Significant progress has made in pattern recognition technology. However, one obstacle that has not yet overcome is the recognition of words in the Brahmi script, specifically the identification of characters, compound characters, and word. This study proposes the use of the deep convolutional neural network with dropout to recognize the Brahmi words. This study also proposed a DCNN for Brahmi word recognition and a series of experiments are performed on standard Brahmi dataset. The practical operation of this method was systematically tested on accessible Brahmi image database, achieving 92.47% recognition rate by CNN with dropout respectively which is among the best while comparing with the ones reported in the literature for the same task.

In this paper we address the understanding of the problem, of why a deep learning model decides that an individual is eligible for a loan or not. Here we propose a novel approach for inferring, which attributes matter the most, for making a decision in each specific individual case. Specifically we leverage concepts from neural attention to devise a novel feature wise attention mechanism. As we show, using real world datasets, our approach offers unique insights into the importance of various features, by producing a decision explanation for each specific loan case. At the same time, we observe that our novel mechanism, generates decisions which are much closer to the decisions generated by human experts, compared to the existent competitors.

A novel coronavirus called 2019-nCoV was recently found in Wuhan, Hubei Province of China, and now is spreading across China and other parts of the world. 2019-nCoV spreads more rapidly than SARS-CoV. Unfortunately, there is no drug to combat the virus. It is of high significance to develop a drug that can combat the virus effectively before the situation gets worse. It usually takes a much longer time to develop a drug using traditional methods. For 2019-nCoV, it is now better to rely on some alternative methods to develop drugs that can combat such a disease effectively since 2019-nCoV is highly homologous to SARS-CoV. In this paper, we first collected virus RNA sequences from the GISAID database, translated the RNA sequences into protein sequences, and built a protein 3D model using homology modeling. Coronavirus main protease is considered to be a major therapeutic target, thus this paper focused on drug screening based on the modeled 2019-nCov_main_protease structure. The deep learning based method DFCNN, developed by our group, can identify/rank the protein-ligand interactions with relatively high accuracy. DFCNN is capable of performing virtual screening quickly since no docking or molecular dynamic simulation is needed. DFCNN identifies potential drugs for 2019-nCoV protease by performing drug screening against 4 chemical compound databases. Also, we performed drug screening for all tripeptides against the binding site of 2019-nCov_main_protease since peptides often show better stability, more bio-availability and negligible immune responses. In the end, we provided the list of possible chemical ligands and peptide drugs for experimental validation.

With the rapid development of Internet and the widely usage of smart devices, massive multimedia data are generated, collected, stored and shared on the Internet. This trend makes cross-modal retrieval problem become a hot issue in this years. Many existing works pay attentions on correlation learning to generate a common subspace for cross-modal correlation measurement, and others uses adversarial learning technique to abate the heterogeneity of multi-modal data. However, very few works combine correlation learning and adversarial learning to bridge the inter-modal semantic gap and diminish cross-modal heterogeneity. This paper propose a novel cross-modal retrieval method, named ALSCOR, which is an end-to-end framework to integrate cross-modal representation learning, correlation learning and adversarial. CCA model, accompanied by two representation model, VisNet and TxtNet is proposed to capture non-linear correlation. Beside, intra-modal classifier and modality classifier are used to learn intra-modal discrimination and minimize the inter-modal heterogeneity. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on three benchmark datasets. The results demonstrate that the proposed ALSCOR has better performance than the state-of-the-arts.

The latest methods based on deep learning have achieved amazing results regarding the complex work of inpainting large missing areas in an image. This type of method generally attempts to generate one single "optimal" inpainting result, ignoring many other plausible results. However, considering the uncertainty of the inpainting task, one sole result can hardly be regarded as a desired regeneration of the missing area. In view of this weakness, which is related to the design of the previous algorithms, we propose a novel deep generative model equipped with a brand new style extractor which can extract the style noise (a latent vector) from the ground truth image. Once obtained, the extracted style noise and the ground truth image are both input into the generator. We also craft a consistency loss that guides the generated image to approximate the ground truth. Meanwhile, the same extractor captures the style noise from the generated image, which is forced to approach the input noise according to the consistency loss. After iterations, our generator is able to learn the styles corresponding to multiple sets of noise. The proposed model can generate a (sufficiently large) number of inpainting results consistent with the context semantics of the image. Moreover, we check the effectiveness of our model on three databases, i.e., CelebA, Agricultural Disease, and MauFlex. Compared to state-of-the-art inpainting methods, this model is able to offer desirable inpainting results with both a better quality and higher diversity. Fusarium head blight (FHB) disease is extensively distributed worldwide. This disease damages grain quality and reduces yield. The detection of this disease in a high throughput way is crucial to planters and breeders. Our study focused on developing a method for processing wheat color images and accurately detecting disease areas using deep learning and image processing techniques. The color images of wheat at the milky stage were collected and processed to construct datasets, which were used to retrain a deep convolutional neural network model using transfer learning. Testing results showed that the model can detect spikes, and the coefficient of determination of the number of spikes between the manual count and the detection was 0.80. The model was assessed, and the mean average precision for the testing dataset was 0.9201. On the basis of the results of spike detection, a new color feature was applied to obtain the gray image of each spike. Then, a modified region growing algorithm was implemented to segment and detect the diseased areas of each spike. Results show that the region growing algorithm performs better than K-means and Otsu’s method in segmenting the FHB disease. Overall, this study demonstrates that deep learning techniques enable the accurate detection of FHB in wheat using color images, and the proposed method can effectively detect spikes and diseased areas, thereby improving the efficiency of FHB detection.

Clinically, knowing the number of red blood cells (RBCs) and white blood cells (WBCs) helps doctors to make the better decision on accurate diagnosis of numerous diseases. The manual cell counting is a very time-consuming and expensive process, and it depends on the experience of specialists. Therefore, a completely automatic method supporting cell counting is a viable solution for clinical laboratories. This paper proposes a novel blood cell counting procedure to address this challenge. The proposed method adopts SegNet - a deep learning semantic segmentation to simultaneously segment RBCs and WBCs. The global accuracy of the segmentation of WBCs, RBCs, and the background of peripheral blood smear images obtains 89% when segment WBCs and RBCs from the background of blood smear images. Moreover, an effective solution to separate grouped or overlapping cells and cell count is presented using Euclidean distance transform, local maxima, and connected component labeling. The counting result of the proposed procedure achieves an accuracy of 93.3% for red blood cell count using dataset 1 and 97.38% for white blood cell count using dataset 2.

Biofuels construct an essential pillar of energy systems. Biofuels are considered as a popular resource for electricity production, heating, household, and industrial usage, liquid fuels, and mobility around the world. Thus, the need for handling, modeling, decision-making, demand, and forecasting for biofuels are of utmost importance. Recently, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques have been accessible in modeling, optimizing, and handling biofuels production, consumption, and environmental impacts. The main aim of this study is to review and evaluate ML and DL techniques and their applications in handling biofuels production, consumption, and environmental impacts, both for modeling and optimization purposes. Hybrid and ensemble ML methods, as well as DL methods, have found to provide higher performance and accuracy in modeling the biofuels.

Recently, generative adversarial networks (GANs) can be used to generate the photo-realistic image from a low-dimension random noise. It is very dangerous that the synthesized or generated image is used on inappropriate contents in social media network. In order to successfully detect such fake image, an effective and efficient image forgery detector is desired. However, conventional image forgery detectors are failed to recognize the synthesized or generated images by using GAN-based generator since they are all generated but manipulation from the source. Therefore, we propose a deep learning-based approach to detect the fake image by combining the contrastive loss. First, several state-of-the-art GANs will be collected to generate the fake-real image pairs. Then, the contrastive will be used on the proposed common fake feature network (CFFN)to learn the discriminative feature between the fake image and real image (i.e., paired information). Finally, a smaller network will be concatenated to the CFFN to determine whether the feature of the input image is fake or real. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method significantly outperforms other state-of-the-art fake image detectors.

Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) is a typical image sensor that has a wide range of applications. However, considering the limitations of the weather condition and hardware cost, it is hard to capture high-resolution images by CMOS sensor. Recently, Super-Resolution (SR) techniques for image restoration has been gaining attentions due to its excellent performance. Under the powerful learning ability, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have been proved to achieve great success. In this paper, we propose the Advanced Generative Adversarial Networks (AGAN) to efficiently correct these issues; 1) we design a Laplacian pyramid framework as pre-trained module, which is beneficial to provide multi-scale features for our input. 2) at each feature block, a convolutional skip-connections network, which may contain some latent information, is significant for generative model to reconstruct a plausible-looking image; 3) considering that edge details usually play an important role in image generation, a novel perceptual loss function is defined to train and seek optimal parameters. It is effective to achieve excellent and compelling quality captured by CMOS sensor. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations have been demonstrated that our algorithm not only fully takes advantage of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to improve the image quality, but also performs better than previous GAN algorithms for super-resolution task.

Geologists employ high-spatial-resolution (HR) remote sensing (RS) data for many diverse applications as they effectively reflect detailed geological information, enabling high-quality and efficient geological surveys. Applications of HR RS data to geological and related fields have grown recently. By analyzing these applications, we can better understand the results of previous studies and more effectively use the latest data and methods to efficiently extract key geological information. HR optical remote sensing data are widely used in geological hazard assessment, seismic monitoring, mineral exploitation, glacier monitoring, and mineral information extraction due to high accuracy and clear object features. Compared with optical satellite images, synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) images are stereoscopic and exhibit clear relief, strong performance, and good detection of terrain, landforms, and other information. SAR images have been applied to seismic mechanism research, volcanic monitoring, topographic deformation, and fault analysis. Furthermore, a multi-standard maturity analysis of the geological applications of HR images using literature from the Science Citation Index reveals that optical remote sensing data are superior to radar data for mining, geological disaster, lithologic, and volcanic applications, but inferior for earthquake, glacial, and fault applications. Therefore, geological remote sensing research needs to be truly multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary, ensuring more detailed and efficient surveys through cross-linking with other disciplines. Moreover, the recent application of deep learning technology to remote sensing data extraction has improved automatic processing and data analysis capabilities.

A continuous Deep Belief Network (cDBN) with two hidden layers is proposed in this paper, focusing on the problem of weak feature learning ability when dealing with continuous data. In cDBN, the input data is trained in an unsupervised way by using continuous version of transfer functions, the contrastive divergence is designed in hidden layer training process to raise convergence speed, an improved dropout strategy is then implemented in unsupervised training to realize features learning by de-cooperating between the units, and then the network is fine-tuned using back propagation algorithm. Besides, hyper-parameters are analysed through stability analysis to assure the network can find the optimal. Finally, the experiments on Lorenz chaos series, CATS benchmark and other real world like CO2 and waste water parameters forecasting show that cDBN has the advantage of higher accuracy, simpler structure and faster convergence speed than other methods.

Rockburst is a hazardous phenomenon in deep tunnels influenced by geological structural planes like faults, joints, and shear planes. Small-scale shear-plane-like structures have damaging impact on the boundaries of the tunnel, which accumulate high stresses. Such a shear plane was exposed in the side wall of the right headrace tunnel in the Neelum-Jehlum Hydropower Project. This project is constructed in the tectonically active Himalayas with high stress conditions. A shear plane combined with high stress conditions is very dangerous in deep excavations. The influence of a shear zone on rockburst occurrence near a tunnel is studied. The FLAC3D explicit code simulated the shear zone in the right tunnel, revealing that the stresses are concentrated near the shear zone, with no stress concentration in the left tunnel, which has neither shear zone nor rockburst. Rock mass was displaced near this shear zone even before excavation. Modeling results confirm that the side wall shear zone of the tunnel has a major influence on rockburst occurrence. A shear slip along this plane released huge amounts of energy, causing human fatalities and property damage. A numerical simulation validates the actual conditions and helps us understand the phenomenon of stress concentration near the shear zone and its impact during deep tunneling.

Oil spillage over a sea or ocean’s surface is a threat to marine and coastal ecosystems. Spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data has been used efficiently for the detection of oil spills due to its operational capability in all-day all-weather conditions. The problem is often modeled as a semantic segmentation task. The images need to be segmented into multiple regions of interest such as sea surface, oil spill, look-alikes, ships and land. Training of a classifier for this task is particularly challenging since there is an inherent class imbalance. In this work, we train a convolutional neural network (CNN) with multiple feature extractors for pixel-wise classification; and introduce to use a new loss function, namely ‘gradient profile’ (GP) loss, which is in fact the constituent of the more generic Spatial Profile loss proposed for image translation problems. For the purpose of training, testing and performance evaluation, we use a publicly available dataset with selected oil spill events verified by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). The results obtained show that the proposed CNN trained with a combination of GP, Jaccard and focal loss functions can detect oil spills with an intersection over union (IoU) value of 63.95%. The IoU value for sea surface, look-alikes, ships and land class is 96.00%, 60.87%, 74.61% and 96.80%, respectively. The mean intersection over union (mIoU) value for all the classes is 78.45%, which accounts for a 13% improvement over the state of the art for this dataset. Moreover, we provide extensive ablation on different Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Vision Transformers (ViTs) based hybrid models to demonstrate the effectiveness of adding GP loss as an additional loss function for training. Results show that GP loss significantly improves the mIoU and F1 scores for CNNs as well as ViTs based hybrid models. GP loss turns out to be a promising loss function in the context of deep learning with SAR images.

The Bayes filters, such as Kalman and particle filters, have been used in sensor fusion to integrate two sources of information and obtain the best estimate of the unknowns. Efficient integration of multiple sensors requires deep knowledge of their error sources and it is not trivial for complicated sensors, such as Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). Therefore, IMU error modelling and efficient integration of IMU and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observations has remained a challenge. In this paper, we develop deep Kalman filter to model and remove IMU errors and consequently, improve the accuracy of IMU positioning. In other words, we add modelling step to the prediction and update steps of Kalman filter and the IMU error model is learned during integration. Therefore, our deep Kalman filter outperforms Kalman filter and reaches higher accuracy.

In any document, graphical elements like tables, figures, and formulas contain essential information. The processing and interpretation of such information require specialized algorithms. Off-the-shelf OCR components cannot process this information reliably. Therefore, an essential step in document analysis pipelines is to detect these graphical components. It leads to a high-level conceptual understanding of the documents that makes digitization of documents viable. Since the advent of deep learning, the performance of deep learning-based object detection has improved many folds. In this work, we outline and summarize the deep learning approaches for detecting graphical page objects in the document images. Therefore, we discuss the most relevant deep learning-based approaches and state-of-the-art graphical page object detection in document images. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the current state-of-the-art and related challenges. Furthermore, we discuss leading datasets along with the quantitative evaluation. Moreover, it discusses briefly the promising directions that can be utilized for further improvements.

In order for robots to attain more general-purpose utility, grasping is a necessary skill to master. Such general-purpose robots may use their perception abilities in order to visually identify grasps for a given object. A grasp describes how a robotic end-effector can be arranged on top of an object to securely grab it between the robotic gripper and successfully lift it without slippage. Traditionally, grasp detection requires expert human knowledge to analytically form the task-specific algorithm, but this is an arduous and time-consuming approach. During the last five years, deep learning methods have enabled significant advancements in robotic vision, natural language processing, and automated driving applications. The successful results of these methods have driven robotics researchers to explore the application of deep learning methods in task generalised robotic applications. This paper reviews the current state-of-the-art in regards to the application of deep learning methods to generalised robotic grasping and discusses how each element of the deep learning approach has improved the overall performance of robotic grasp detection. A number of the most promising approaches are evaluated and the most successful for grasp detection is identified as the one-shot detection method. The availability of suitable volumes of appropriate training data is identified as a major obstacle for effective utilisation of the deep learning approaches, and the use of transfer learning techniques is identified as a potential mechanism to address this. Finally, current trends in the field and future potential research directions are discussed.

Periodontics is a complex field characterized by a constantly growing body of research, posing a challenge for researchers and stakeholders striving to stay abreast of its evolving literature. Tradi-tional bibliometric surveys, while accurate, are labor-intensive and not scalable to meet the demands of such rapidly expanding domains. The aim of this study was to explore the uses of a top-ic-modeling algorithm to investigate the structure of the periodontics research field. To this purpose, we employed BERTopic to automatically sift through a substantial corpus of periodontics manu-scripts published in MEDLINE from 2009 to 2024 and identify topics using two sets of settings, to get a broader and high detailed view of the field, respectively. BERTopic identified and categorized 31 topics, unveiling the internal structure and the relations between publication macroareas. When we used the high granularity settings, we identified 2428 topics, which revealed hotspots within the field. Specific regression highlighted novel research areas such as artificial intelligence and exo-somes. In conclusion, BERTopic offers a flexible tool to provide insights into periodontics, its most recent trends, and serve as a useful instrument to approach the field and direct future research.

Predicting patient readmission is an important task for healthcare risk management, as it can help prevent adverse events, reduce costs, and improve patient outcomes. In this paper, we compare various conventional machine learning models on a multimodal dataset of electronic discharge records from an Irish acute hospital. We \khoi{evaluate the effectiveness of several widely-used Machine Learning models} that leverage patient demographics, historical hospitalization records, and clinical diagnoses codes, to forecast future clinical risks. \khoi{Our work focuses on addressing two key challenges in the medical fields: data imbalance and the variety of data types in order to boost the performance of Machine Learning algorithms. Through extensive benchmarking and the application of a variety of feature engineering techniques, we successfully improved the Area Under the Curve (AUROC) score from 0.628 to 0.7 across our models on the test dataset}. Our study demonstrates how we effectively utilize the routinely collected hospital data to forecast patient readmission through the use of conventional machine learning while applying explainable AI techniques to explore the correlation between data features and patient readmission rate.

Introduction: Chronic ulcers significantly burden healthcare systems, requiring precise measurement and assessment for effective treatment. Traditional methods, such as manual segmentation, are time-consuming and error-prone. This review evaluates the potential of artificial intelligence (AI)--powered mobile apps for automated ulcer segmentation and their application in clinical settings. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane and Google Scholas databases. The review focused on mobile apps that use fully automatic AI algorithms for wound segmentation. Apps requiring additional hardware or needing more technical documentation were excluded. Vital technological features, clinical validation, and usability were analysed. Results: Ten mobile apps were identified, showing varying levels of segmentation accuracy and clinical validation. However, many apps did not publish sufficient information on the segmentation methods or algorithms used, and most lacked details on the databases employed for training their AI models. Additionally, several apps were unavailable in public repositories, limiting their accessibility and independent evaluation. These factors challenge their integration into clinical practice despite promising preliminary results. Discussion: AI-powered mobile apps offer significant potential for improving wound care by enhancing diagnostic accuracy and reducing the burden on healthcare professionals. Nonetheless, the lack of transparency regarding segmentation techniques, unpublished databases, and limited availability of many apps in public repositories remain substantial barriers to widespread clinical adoption. Conclusion: AI-driven mobile apps for ulcer segmentation could revolutionise chronic wound management. However, overcoming limitations related to transparency, data availability, and accessibility is essential for their successful integration into healthcare systems.

Due to the influence of factors such as user consumption habits and manufacturer service quality, e-commerce platforms cannot push personalized product information to any consumer. This project studies the push of product information on e-commerce platforms based on deep neural networks. It mines the data of users' online shopping behaviors such as browsing, collecting, and adding to cart on e-commerce platforms, and pre-processes the mined user behavior data by cleaning, integrating, and normalizing them. It builds a deep bidirectional Transformer model to learn users' historical behavior data and predict the most probable products that meet users' behavior needs, thereby realizing the automatic push of product information on e-commerce platforms. The experimental results show that the F1 value of the push result of product information on e-commerce platforms under the method designed by this algorithm is 0.97, which confirms the effectiveness and superiority of this method.

Sugarcane is the primary crop in the global sugar industry, yet it remains highly susceptible to a wide range of diseases that significantly impact its yield and quality. An effective solution is required to solve the issues given by manual identification of plant diseases, which is time-consuming and wasteful, as well as low detection accuracy. This paper proposes the development of a robust deep ensemble convolutional neural network (DECNN) model for the accurate detection of sugarcane leaf diseases. Initially, several transfer learning (TL) models, including EfficientNetB0, MobileNetV2, DenseNet121, NASNetMobile, and EfficientNetV2B0, were enhanced through the addition of specific layers. A comparative study was then conducted on the improved dataset. The application of data augmentation, along with the addition of dense layers, batchnormalization layers, and dropout layers, led to improved detection accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score for each model. Among the five enhanced transfer learning models, the modified EfficientNetB0 model demonstrated the highest detection accuracy, ranging from 97.08% to 98.54%. In conclusion, the DECNN model was developed by integrating the modified EfficientNetB0, MobileNetV2, and DenseNet121 models using a distinctive performance-based custom weighted ensemble method, with weight optimization carried out using the Tree-structured Parzen Estimator (TPE) technique. This resulted in a model that achieved a detection accuracy of 99.17%, outperforming the individual performances of the modified EfficientNetB0, MobileNetV2, and DenseNet121 models in detecting sugarcane leaf diseases.

Construction projects' unsatisfactory performance has been linked to factors influencing individuals' well-being and mental alertness on projects. Drowsiness is a significant indicator of sleep deprivation and fatigue, being able to identify the cognitive and physical preparedness of workers on site to engage in construction tasks. As a consequence of the strenuous nature of the work involved in construction, long work hours, and environmental conditions, drowsiness is commonplace and has received less attention despite being a leading cause of accidents occurring on-site. Detecting drowsiness is essential for determining the safety and well-being of site workers. This study presents a vision-based approach using an improved version of the You Only Look Once (YOLOv8) algorithm for real-time drowsiness exposure among construction workers. The proposed method leverages computer vision techniques to analyse facial and eye features, enabling early detection of drowsiness signs, effectively preventing accidents, and enhancing on-site safety. The model showed significant precision and efficiency in detecting drowsiness from the given dataset, accomplishing a drowsiness class with a mean average precision (mAP) of 92%. However, it also exhibited difficulties handling imbalanced classes, particularly the underrepresented 'Awake with PPE' class, which was detected with high precision but comparatively lower recall and mAP. This highlighted the necessity of balanced datasets for optimal deep learning performance. The YOLOv8 model's average mAP of 78% in drowsiness detection compared favourably with other studies employing different methodologies. The vision-based drowsiness detection system has broad applications in the construction industry. It can be integrated into existing safety protocols, enabling real-time alerts to supervisors or workers when drowsiness is detected. The system improves productivity and reduces costs by preventing accidents and enhancing worker safety. However, limitations, such as sensitivity to lighting conditions and occlusions, must be addressed in future iterations.

This paper investigates the application of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) in solving the facility location decision problem. By adapting the learning objectives and structure of GNNs, this research bridges the gap between traditional optimization approaches and modern machine learning techniques. The proposed method demonstrates improved decision-making capabilities, providing promising results for facility location optimization. Additionally, potential future research directions are outlined, highlighting areas where GNNs can further enhance decision-making processes in complex supply chain networks. Hybrid GNN and Mixed Integer Programming solutions have been proposed.

Artificial intelligence (AI), the wide spectrum of technologies aiming to give machines or computers the ability to perform human-like cognitive functions, began in the 40s with the first abstract models of intelligent machines. Soon later in the 50s and 60s machine learning algorithms such as neural networks and decision trees ignited large enthusiasm. More recent advancements include the refinement of learning algorithms, the development of convolutional neural networks to efficiently analyze images, and methods to synthesize new images. The renewed enthusiasm was also due to the increase in computational power with graphical processing units and the availability of large digital databases to be mined by neural networks. AI soon began to be applied in medicine, first through expert systems designed to support the clinician’s decision, and later with neural networks for the detection or classification of malignant lesions in medical images. More recently, the use of natural language processing, recurrent neural networks, transformers and generative models has both improved the capabilities of making an automated reading of medical images and moved AI to new domains, including text analysis of electronic health records, image self-labelling and self-reporting. Thanks to its versatility and impressive results and fueled by the availability of powerful computing resources and open-source libraries, AI is one of the most promising resources for frontier research and applications in medicine.

Plant diseases not only cause economic losses, but they also pose a health risk. In this regard, aflatoxins are linked to the development of some type of liver cancer, especially the hepatocellular carcinoma. Aflatoxins are usually produced by the fungi Aspergillus flavus and Parsiticus in figs, and their identification is usually carried out using invasive and complex methods or by visual inspection at an advanced stage. Given that Spain is one of the main producers of figs and Extremadura is the leading region in the country, it is necessary to explore alternative ways of detecting the presence of aflatoxins in figs and preventing them from entering the food chain. The aim of this research is to address the early detection of Aspergillus flavus fungus using non-invasive techniques with the aid of hyperspectral imaging and the application of artificial intelligence techniques, in particular deep learning. The images were taken after inoculation of the microtoxin using 3 different concentrations, related to three different classes and healthy figs (healthy controls). The analysis of the hyperspectral images was performed at the pixel level. Firstly, a full connected neural network was used to analyse the spectral signature associated with each pixel; second, the wavelet transform was applied to each spectral signature. The resulting images are fed to a convolutional neural network. The hyperparameters of the proposed models were adjusted based on the parameter tuning process also performed. The results are promising, with 83% accuracy, 82.75% recall and 83.25% F1-measure for the single neural network, and 77.25% accuracy, recall and F1 for the convolution neural network.

This study presents the development and evaluation of a Multi-Task Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model with an Attention Mechanism designed to predict students' academic performance. The model concurrently addresses two tasks: predicting overall performance (total score) as a regression task and categorizing performance levels (remarks) as a classification task. By processing both tasks simultaneously, the model optimizes computational efficiency and resource use. The dataset includes detailed student performance records across various metrics such as Continuous Assessment, Practical Skills, Demeanor, Presentation Quality, Attendance, and Participation. The model's performance was evaluated using comprehensive metrics. For the regression task, it achieved a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.0249, Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 0.0012, and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 0.0346. For the classification task, it attained perfect scores with an accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score of 1.0. These results highlight the model's high accuracy and robustness in predicting both continuous and categorical outcomes. The Attention Mechanism enhances the model's capabilities by identifying and focusing on the most relevant features. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the Multi-Task LSTM with Attention Mechanism in educational data analysis, offering a reliable tool for predicting student performance and potential broader applications in similar multi-task learning contexts. Future work will explore further enhancements and wider applications to improve predictive accuracy and efficiency.

High-precision, ultra-thin angular detectable imaging upon a single pixel holds significant promise for light field detection and reconstruction, thereby catalyzing advancements in machine vision and interaction technology. Traditional light-direction angle sensors relying on optical components like gratings and lenses face inherent constraints from diffraction limits in achieving device miniaturization. Recently, angle sensors via coupled double nanowires have demonstrated prowess in attaining high-precision angle perception of incident light at sub-wavelength device scales, which may herald a novel design paradigm for ultra-compact angle sensors. However, the current approach to measure the three-dimensional (3D) incident light direction is unstable. In this paper, we propose a flexible segmented concentric nanorings structure capable of discerning the 3D light-direction based on its sensitivity character to both elevation (θ) and azimuth (ϕ) angles at a micrometer device scale. Through deep learning (DL) analysis and prediction, our simulations reveal that for angle scanning with a step size of 1o, the device can still achieve a detection range of 0∼360o for azimuth and 45o∼90o for elevation, with an average accuracy of 0.19o, and DL can further solve some data aliasing problems to expand the sensing range. Our design broadens the angle sensing dimension based on mutual resonance coupling among nanorings segments, and through waveguide implementation or sensor array arrangements, the detection range can be flexibly adjusted to accommodate diverse application scenarios.

In the era of massive construction, damaged and aging infrastructure are becoming more common. Defects, such as cracking, spalling, etc., are main types of structural damage that widely occur. Hence, ensuring the safe operation existing infrastructure through health monitoring has emerged as an important challenge facing structural engineers. In recent years, intelligent approaches, such as data driven machine and deep learning crack detection, gradually dominate over traditional methods. Among them, the semantic segmentation using deep learning models is a process of characterization of accurate location and portrait of cracks using pixel level classification. Most available studies rely on single model knowledge to perform this task. However, it is well-known that the single model might suffer from low variance and low ability to generalize in case of data alteration. By leveraging the ensemble deep learning philosophy, a novel corporative semantic segmentation of concrete cracks method called Co-CrackSegment is proposed. Firstly, five models, namely the U-net, SegNet, DeepCrack19, DeepLabV3-ResNet50, and DeepLabV3-ResNet101 are trained to serve as core models for the ensemble model Co-CrackSegment. To build the ensemble model Co-CrackSegment, a new iterative approach based on the best evaluation metrics, namely the dice score, IoU, pixel accuracy, precision, and recall metrics is developed. Results show that the Co-CrackSegment exhibits a prominent performance compared to core models and weighted average ensemble by means of the considered best statistical metrics.

Two-dimensional ultrasound (2D US) is commonly used in clinical settings for its cost-effectiveness and non-invasiveness, but it is limited by spatial orientation and operator dependency. Three-dimensional ultrasound (3D US) overcomes these limitations by adding a third dimension and enhancing integration with other imaging modalities. Advances in deep learning (DL) have further propelled the viability of freehand image-based 3D reconstruction, broadening clinical applications in intraoperative and point-of-care (POC) settings. This review evaluates state-of-the-art freehand 3D US reconstruction methods that eliminate the need for external tracking devices, focusing on experimental setups, data acquisition strategies, and reconstruction methodologies. PubMed, Scopus, and IEEE Xplore were searched for studies since 2014 following PRISMA guidelines, excluding those using additional imaging or tracking systems other than inertial measurement units (IMUs). Fourteen eligible studies were analyzed, showing a shift from traditional speckle decorrelation towards DL-based methods, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Variability in datasets and evaluation methods hindered a comprehensive quantitative comparison, but notable accuracy improvements were observed with IMUs and integration of contextual and temporal information within CNNs. These advancements enhance freehand 3D US reconstruction feasibility, though variability limits definitive conclusions about the most effective methods. Future research should focus on improving precision in complex trajectories and adaptability across clinical scenarios.

The objective of image super-resolution is to reconstruct a high-resolution (HR) image with the prior knowledge from one or several low-resolution (LR) images. However, in the real world, due to the limited complementary information, the performance of both single-frame and multi-frame super-resolution reconstruction degrades rapidly as the magnification increases. In this paper, we propose a novel two-step image super resolution method concatenating multi-frame super-resolution (MFSR) with single-frame super-resolution (SFSR), to progressively upsample images to the desired resolution. The proposed method consisting of an L0-norm constrained reconstruction scheme and an enhanced residual back-projection network, integrating the flexibility of the variational model-based method and the feature learning capacity of the deep learning-based method. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, extensive experiments with both simulated and real world sequences were implemented. The experimental results show that the proposed method yields superior performance in both objective and perceptual quality measurements, compared to the baseline super-resolution algorithms in the cascade model. In addition, the experiment indicates that this cascade model can be robustly applied to different SFSR and MFSR methods.

The impact of financial risks extends beyond the normal operation and survival of industrial and commercial enterprises and financial institutions. They also have the potential to impede the stable development of a country's and even the world's financial economy. This is clearly demonstrated by the severe consequences of the frequent financial crises that have occurred in recent years. It thus follows that the prevention of financial risks has become one of the core tasks of the operation and management of industrial and commercial enterprises and financial institutions. Portfolio optimization techniques are employed in the construction of a variety of asset allocation models, with reinforcement learning algorithms used to dynamically adjust investment strategies with the objective of maximizing returns and minimizing risks. The preliminary construction of an asset allocation model is achieved through the utilization of a genetic algorithm. Genetic algorithms emulate the processes of natural selection and genetic variation to identify the optimal portfolio of assets that will yield the greatest returns at a pre-established level of risk. Subsequently, the Deep Q-Learning algorithm is introduced to facilitate dynamic adjustments and optimization of the asset allocation, based on the initial construction. Deep Q-learning employs deep neural networks to forecast the prospective returns of disparate investment strategies, thereby optimizing the decision-making process through continuous learning and updating. The combination of genetic algorithms and deep Q-learning enables the system to identify the optimal investment strategy under a diverse range of initial conditions and to adapt it in real-time to respond to market fluctuations and uncertainties. The experimental analysis demonstrates that the proposed method exhibits an exemplary capacity for risk control and a robust ability to generate stable income growth across diverse market environments. In simulation experiments, portfolios constructed using this method demonstrate lower volatility and higher average returns than those generated through traditional methods.

The combination of medical imaging and deep learning has significantly improved diagnostic and prognostic capabilities in the healthcare domain. Nevertheless, the inherent complexity of deep learning models poses challenges in understanding their decision-making processes. Interpretability and visualization techniques have emerged as crucial tools to unravel the black-box nature of these models, providing insights into their inner workings and enhancing trust in their predictions. This survey paper comprehensively examines various interpretation and visualization techniques applied to deep learning models in medical imaging. The paper reviews methodologies, discusses their applications, and evaluates their effectiveness in enhancing the interpretability, reliability, and clinical relevance of deep learning models in medical image analysis.

In addressing the multifaceted problem of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection in wireless communication systems, this work highlights the pressing need for enhanced detection reliability under variable channel conditions and MIMO antenna configurations. We propose a novel method that sets a new standard for deep unfolding approaches to MIMO detection by integrating the iterative conjugate gradient method with Tikhonov regularization, combining the adaptability of modern deep learning techniques with the robustness of classical regularization. Unlike conventional techniques, our strategy treats the regularization parameter of Tikhonov regularization as well as step size values and search direction coefficients of conjugate gradient (CG) method as trainable parameters within the deep learning framework, allowing for dynamic modification according to channel conditions and MIMO antenna configurations. Detection performance is significantly improved by the proposed approach in variety of conditions. In different MIMO settings, the suggested method consistently shows better bit error rate (BER) and normalized minimum mean square error (NMSE) performance. Across a range of MIMO configurations and channel conditions, the proposed method exhibits significantly lower BER and NMSE values than well-known techniques such as DetNet and CG. The proposed method has superior performance over CG and other model-oriented methods, especially in small number of iterations. Consequently, the simulation results demonstrate the flexibility of the proposed approach, making it a viable choice for MIMO systems with a range of antenna configurations and different channnel conditions.

Ultrasound imaging is a vital imaging tool in musculoskeletal medicine, with the number of publications on ultrasound-guided surgery increasing in recent years. However, ultrasound imaging has drawbacks, such as operator dependency and image obscurity. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning (DL), a subset of AI, can address these issues. DL methods, including segmentation, detection, and localization of target tissues and medical instruments, potentially allow physicians and surgeons to perform ultrasound-guided procedures more accurately and efficiently. This review summarizes recent advances in ultrasound-guided procedures for musculoskeletal diseases and provides a comprehensive overview of the utilization of AI/DL in ultrasound for musculoskeletal medicine, particularly focusing on ultrasound-guided surgery.

The exponential growth of multimodal content across social media platforms, comprising text, images, audio, and video, has catalyzed substantial interest in artificial intelligence, particularly in multi-modal sentiment analysis (MSA). This study presents a comprehensive survey of 30 research papers published between 2020 and 2024 by eminent publishers such as Elsevier, ACM, IEEE, Springer, and others indexed in Google Scholar. Our analysis primarily focuses on exploring multimodal fusion techniques and features, with specific emphasis on the integration of text and image data. Additionally, the article offers an overview of the evolution, definition, and historical context of MSA. It delves into the current challenges and potential advantages of MSA, investigating recent datasets and sophisticated models. Furthermore, the study provides insights into prospective research directions. Notably, this review offers valuable recommendations for advancing research and developing more robust MSA models, thus serving as a valuable resource for both academic and industry researchers engaged in this burgeoning field.

This paper presents a methodology based on deep learning models and metaheuristic algorithms for the optimization of airfoils for the design of aircraft wings with large endurance. The use of AZTLI-NN (a neural network with an architecture composed of a multilayer perceptron and a variational autoencoder) is implemented for the prediction of graphs of the aerodynamic coefficients of the airfoil as a function of the angle of attack. This neural network presents good predictions of the aerodynamic coefficients, similar to the coefficients obtained with computational fluid dynamics simulations. AZTLI-NN in combination of metaheuristic algorithms and the CST profile parameterization method show excellent performance in single-objective and multi-objective profile optimization tasks.

Deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) is safe, but subtle neurodevelopmental deficits may persist far beyond the perioperative period. We investigated the relationship between DHCA duration and neurodevelopmental outcomes in young children undergoing cardiac surgery with DHCA. Children aged < 42 months, including neonates who underwent cardiac surgery using DHCA without regional perfusion techniques, were included as the DHCA group. Children in the same age range undergoing cardiac surgery without DHCA were included as the control group. All patients underwent neurodevelopmental assessment using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (BSTID) by a trained pediatrician. Seventeen of 25 DHCA and six of 10 control patients completed the BSTID assessment. The groups showed no preoperative, operative, or postoperative significant differences. In adjusted multivariable analysis, prematurity and age at assessment were significant changing predictors of each of the BSTID components (p < 0.001), other than the gross motor component, where only age at assessment was a significant adjusting predictor. Longer DHCA was associated with lower fine and gross motor BSTID components; however, the association was not statistically significant (p = 0.06). Use of DHCA without regional perfusion techniques may be associated with less optimal neurodevelopmental outcomes if DHCA has a long duration.

Coffee is one of the most valuable agricultural products worldwide, and it is crucial to have efficient tools to obtain reliable information about production. This study aims to estimate coffee plantation production using segmentation and deep learning techniques in RGB images. Photographs of coffee plants were taken in Tabaconas, San Ignacio-Cajamarca, to create a dataset of crops during the harvest stage. The images were segmented to detect coffee fruits. A deep learning method was developed with YOLOv5 to detect the fruits and OpenCV to count them. The results showed that YOLOv5 achieved an accuracy of 97.25%, a recall of 95.77%, and an F1-Score of 96.37%, demonstrating high reliability in detecting coffee fruits. The average detection time per image was 17.9 seconds. The metrics were evaluated using a confusion matrix, highlighting the model's good performance. In conclusion, segmentation and deep learning techniques, along with counting algorithms developed with OpenCV, proved effective for estimating coffee production. This approach provides a valuable tool for farmers, improving crop management and facilitating decision-making in precision agriculture.

The article evaluates the use of machine learning methods to predict valve plate failures in hydraulic pumps. To conduct this assessment, a laboratory setup was developed that allowed the creation of a training dataset containing both the normal operating state of the pump and the operating state with three different valve plate damages. Five different predictive models were evaluated, including three composite models based on decision trees: Random Forest, Gradient-Boosted Trees, and Rotation Forest, as well as the kNN algorithm and a neural network. The analysis showed that neural networks achieved the highest prediction accuracy, enabling a prediction accuracy level of 89%. The kNN algorithm ranked second, and tree-based algorithms performed 4% worse than the neural network. Additionally, the attribute importance analysis revealed that leak flow, pressure output together with output flow, are the most important parameters for accurate prediction.

In order to shorten the detection time and improve the average precision on embedded devices, A lightweight and high accuracy model is proposed for passion fruit in complex environments (backlight, occlusion, overlap, sunny, cloudy, rainy). Firstly, replacing the backbone network of YOLOv5 with a lightweight GhostNet model reduces the number of parameters and computation while improving detection speed. Secondly, a new feature branch is added to the GhostNet network, and the feature fusion layer in the neck network is reconstructed to effectively combine the lower-level and higher-level features, which not only improves the accuracy of the model but also maintains its lightweight. Finally, the knowledge distillation methods are used to transfer the knowledge from the more capable teacher model to the less capable student model, which significantly improving the detection accuracy. The improved model is denoted as G-YOLO-NK. The average accuracy of the G-YOLO-NK network is 96.00%, which is 1.00% higher than the original YOLOv5s model. Furthermore, the improved model size is 7.14MB, reduced to half of the original model, and the real-time detection frame rate is 11.25 FPS on the Jetson Nano. Compared to the state-of-the-art model, the proposed model outperforms them in terms of average precision and detection performance. The present work provides an effective model for real-time detection of passion fruits in complex orchard scenes, which can provide valuable technical support for the development of orchard picking robots and greatly improve the intelligence level of orchards.

This study explores the potential of a deep-water hydroponic system integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) technology to enhance the production of Chinese celery (Apium graveolens), a popular leafy vegetable with culinary and medicinal properties. Traditional soil cultivation of Chinese celery can take 75-90 days and is susceptible to fungal diseases. To address these challenges, a 2 x 6 meter hydroponic greenhouse was designed and constructed to accommodate 1,000 plants. The study investigated the effects of two key factors on celery growth and yield: daily light exposure (660 nm wavelength, 6:00-11:00 p.m.) and internal temperature regulation using a fog sprayer when temperatures surpassed 35°C. The experiment was conducted in four separate hydroponic houses, each with different factor controls: House 1 (light and temperature), House 2 (temperature only), House 3 (light only), and House 4 (natural conditions). The IoT-based system maintained optimal water conductivity and pH levels, monitored through the Blynk application and regulated by an ESP32 microcontroller. Sensor data, including water conductivity, pH, internal temperature, humidity, and water temperature, were collected throughout the study. Results revealed significant differences in weight and final yield among the houses, with House 1 achieving the highest yield, 13.91% higher than House 4. A comparison between Houses 2 and 3 indicated that temperature played a more critical role than light in celery cultivation under similar conditions. An economic analysis demonstrated the cost-effectiveness of investing in the automated control system, with House 1 being 14% more profitable than House 4 and a breakeven point achieved at 27 months. This research highlights the benefits of IoT-controlled hydroponic systems in elevating Chinese celery production towards sustainable and efficient practices, offering valuable insights for modern agriculture.

Despite the availability of COVID-19 vaccines, the global pandemic remains a significant health challenge. Timely detection of the virus is crucial for effective containment efforts, prompting the exploration of machine learning (ML) models for COVID-19 detection. highlights the ongoing significance of COVID-19 as a global health crisis despite the availability of vaccines. To address the need for timely virus detection, the study explores the efficacy of machine learning (ML) models, including DNN, Voting, Bagging, SVC_rbf, SVC_linear, SVC_polynomial, and SVC_sigmoid, in predicting COVID-19 infection probability. With a dataset comprising 4000 samples split into 3200 for training and 800 for testing, the analysis reveals that DNN and Voting models demonstrate the highest performance, achieving an impressive accuracy of 89%. These results underscore the potential of ML techniques, particularly DNN and ensemble methods like Voting, in facilitating early COVID-19 detection and contributing to effective pandemic management. The study emphasizes the importance of continued research to further refine and optimize ML-based COVID-19 detection systems.

The detection accuracy of bridge superficial defect using the deep neural network approach decreases significantly under light variation and weak texture condition. To address these issues, an enhanced intelligent detection method based on the YOLOv8 deep neural network is proposed in this study. Firstly, multi-branch coordinate attention (MBCA) is proposed to improve the accuracy of coordinate positioning by introducing a global perception module in coordinate attention mechanism. Furthermore, a deformable convolution based on MBCA is developed to improve the adaptability for complex feature shapes. Lastly, the deformable convolutional network-attention-YOLO (DAC-YOLO) detection algorithm is formed by replacing the deep C2F structure in the YOLOv8 architecture with deformable convolution. A supervised dataset consisting of 4794 bridge surface damage images is employed to verify the proposed method, and results show that it achieves improvements of 2.0% and 3.4% in mAP and R. Meanwhile, the model complexity decreases by 1.2G, increasing the detection speed by 3.5/f·s-1.

In high-risk railway construction, personal protective equipment monitoring is critical but challenging due to small and frequently obstructed targets. We propose YOLO-EA, an innovative model that enhances safety measure detection by integrating ECA into its backbone's convolutional layers, improving discernment of minuscule objects like hardhats. YOLO-EA further refines target recognition under occlusion by replacing GIoU with EIoU loss. YOLO-EA's effectiveness was empirically substantiated using a dataset derived from real-world railway construction site surveillance footage. It outperforms YOLOv5, achieving 98.9% precision and 94.7% recall, up 2.5% and 0.5% respectively, while maintaining real-time performance at 70.774 fps. This highly efficient and precise YOLO-EA holds great promise for practical application in intricate construction scenarios, enforcing stringent safety compliance during complex railway construction projects.

The intricate relationship between Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) metrics and machine learning model performance underscores the need for rigorous dataset evaluation and selection protocols to ensure the reliability and generalizability of classification outcomes. This study involved a thorough examination of selected publicly available plant diseases datasets, with an emphasis on how well they performed as measured by GLCM metrics. After first classifying the datasets according to their GLCM metrics, dataset_2 (D2) and dataset_5 (D5) were found, respectively, to be the best-performing dataset in all GLCM analyses. The same datasets were then used to train deep learning models, and their classification performances were assessed. A noteworthy association was observed between the results of training deep learning models and the performance ratings derived from GLCM studies. More specifically, dataset_2 (D2) performed best in both GLCM analysis and deep learning model performance, indicating a strong correlation between the accuracy of classification and the textural qualities that GLCM captured. In the context of plant disease identification, in particular, these results highlight the significance of clearly defined dataset selection criteria in deep learning applications. Scholars can improve the accuracy and dependability of deep learning models for diagnosing plant diseases by giving preference to datasets with favorable GLCM metrics. The research also emphasizes the importance of texture features being taken into account in addition to conventional image features, highlighting the necessity of transparency and rigor in dataset selection procedures.

The dawn of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare stands as a milestone in medical innovation. A plethora of different medical fields are heavily involved and pediatric emergency medicine is no exception. These new tools do not merely provide more advanced and efficient systems for patients’ diagnosis, management and treatment. They rather concern a strict shift from traditional methods based upon broad categories towards a more personalized healthcare. AI offers many promises in pediatric emergency medicine with a wide range of applications involving clinical decision making, patients’ flows management and prioritization. Main barriers to a widespread diffusion involve technological challenges but also ethical issues and the paucity of extensive datasets in pediatric contexts. We conducted a narrative review structured in two parts. The first part explores the theoretical principles of AI, providing all the necessary background to feel confident with these new state-of-the-art tools. The second part presents an informative analysis of AI models in pediatric emergencies, pointing out the actual applications and challenges until future feasible research perspectives.

In this paper we propose a module that uses features learned by a deep convolutional neural network to infer areas of corrosion and segment pixels to corrosion areas of inspection interest. Our segmentation module is based on eigen tree decomposition and information based decision criteria. To interrogate performance we use several state-of-the-art deep learning architectures and compare to our approach. The results indicate that our method produces better results in terms of accuracy and precision, whilst maintaining good (f-score) significance over the entire dataset.

“Dark Web” usually describes a new world of e-living space perceived as a place, free from con-straints, in which its main actors generally are criminal, unstable, and mentally disturbed individ-uals. Nowadays, advancements in information and internet technologies have made the Dark Web more accessible in recent decades. The Dark Web is a virtual world component; therefore, as-sessing users’ behavior may be crucial in understanding motivation to use it. This study aims to discuss the behavior patterns of Dark Web users within the theoretical framework of the technol-ogy acceptance model via a structural equation model. The resulting structural equation model showed that considered causal relationships were statistically significant.

Identification and segmentation of rock particles is very important in geology, mining, engineering construction, and environmental monitoring. Traditional methods for recognizing the rock particle characteristics are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and limited by the geographical scope of the sampling sites, which makes it more difficult to represent the spatial distribution of the rock particles accurately. Recent advancements in deep learning techniques offer promising solutions to automate this process. This study aims at utilizing state-of-the-art (SOTA) Mask R-CNN deep learning algorithm from the Detectron2 framework, to capture global features of rocks that will enable the recognition of rock particles more efficiently, just from having the rock images. These images are subject to image processing techniques such as a Gaussian filter, to denoise and smoothen the image, and an Illumination Adaptive Transformer (IAT) framework, to adjust the lighting exposure; all of which add to improve the quality of the image dataset. Afterward, the Mask R-CNN and Detectron2 models are utilized in training the images using transfer learning. Experimental results from evaluating the performance of the proposed algorithms showcase the effectiveness of the approach, thereby highlighting its potential to revolutionize rock particle segmentation across various domains.

Amid escalating urbanization, devising rational commercial space layouts is a critical challenge. Leveraging machine learning, this study uses a Back-propagation (BP) neural network to optimize commercial spaces in Weinan City's central urban area. The results indicate an increased number of commercial facilities with a trend of multi-centered agglomeration and outward expansion. Based on these findings, we propose a strategic framework for rational commercial space development emphasizing aggregation centers, development axes, and spatial guidelines. This strategy provides valuable insights for urban planners in small and medium-sized cities in the Yellow River Basin and metropolitan areas, ultimately showcasing the power of machine learning in enhancing urban planning.

The IEEE 802.11ah standard is introduced to address the growing scale of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. To reduce contention and enhance energy efficiency within the system, the restricted access window (RAW) mechanism is introduced at the medium access control (MAC) layer to manage the significant number of stations accessing the network. However, the RAW parameters need to be appropriately determined to achieve optimal network performance. In this paper, we optimize the configuration of RAW parameters in the IEEE 802.11ah-based IoT network. We analyze and propose an RAW parameters optimization problem with the objective of improving network throughput and formulate it as a Markov decision process. To cope with the complex and dynamic network conditions, we propose a proximal policy optimization (PPO)-based deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm to find the optimal RAW parameters. We construct network environments with periodic and random traffic in the NS-3 simulator to validate the performance of the proposed PPO-based RAW parameters optimization algorithm. Simulation results reveal that using the PPO-based DRL algorithm, optimal RAW parameters can be obtained under different network conditions, thereby significantly improving network throughput.
