While a number of studies focused on pre-service teachers’ belief change in teacher education programs, the process of English Language Teaching (ELT) pre-service teachers’ belief change on technology integration remains underexplored. Adopting Cabaroglu and Roberts (2000)’s framework, this study investigated the process of belief change among three ELT pre-service teachers in a digital humanity course in a teacher education program in the US. The data were collected from interviews, the “story of self” of the participants, bi-weekly reflective journals, end-of-the semester reflection papers, and lesson plans. The study revealed that student teachers’ beliefs experienced different processes of change during the course, including awareness and realization, confirmation and consolidation, elaboration and polishing, addition, disagreement, and reversal. The paper provides a new understanding of the benefit of a digital humanity course with a technology integration focus in a teacher education program, which could exert a significant effect on affecting pre-service teachers’ beliefs on technology integration.

This brief report detailed the investigation of secondary school students' future intention to use Computer-Based Testing (CBT) in Lagos, Nigeria. A sample of 531 students, which is made-up of new and returning users of CBT, responded to a questionnaire based on a four-point Likert scale. The study aimed to explore whether ease of use, gender, computer self-efficacy, and prior experience influence the future intention to use CBT. Findings show that students who find CBT easier to use have a significantly higher intention to use it again. This association remains significant even when controlling for gender, computer self-efficacy, and experience. New users demonstrated a slightly higher mean intention to use CBT than returning users, possibly due to the novelty effect. This report recommends improving CBT's ease of use to accommodate varying levels of computer literacy and self-efficacy. Limitations of the investigation include the nominal nature of the data and the self-reported responses, which could impact the accuracy of the analysis. Future studies should adopt more robust methodologies, such as Structural Equation Modeling, to better explore these relationships.

(1) Background: This qualitative research had the objective to study the reasons for non-acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccination by some Muslims in the three southern border provinces of Thailand; (2) Methods: Data collection was done in a community of Pattani province and communities along the Thai-Malaysian border of Narathiwat province by observation and in-depth interview. The 40 key informants were community Muslims, religious leaders and public health workers selected by purposive sampling according to their knowledge of the situation. The data were tested by triangulation and analytical descriptive conclusion; (3) Results: Some Muslims did not accept the COVID-19 vaccination for six important reasons: 1) The belief that the village health volunteers (VHV) who persuaded them to have vaccination only hoped for the state reward. 2) Death is the will of God so vaccination is not necessary. 3) Every kind of vaccine is not halal. 4) Vaccination is the cause of weakened ability. 5) Vaccination had caused death, and 6) Fear of re-vaccination impact because they had the vaccination in Malaysia. (4) Conclusions Involving religious leaders and fostering Thailand-Malaysia cooperation are key to combating health misinformation. Culturally sensitive health education can improve public health responses in the southern border region.

This exploratory study investigates the role of wearable technologies in fostering emotional connections between human brands and customers. Given the rapid growth of the wearable technology market and the increasing importance of emotional connections in marketing, this research aims to uncover the potential of these technologies in strengthening the affective bond between brands and consumers. The mixed-method approach included semi-structured in-depth interviews with 25 marketing experts and an online survey of 300 consumers. Data analysis was conducted using thematic coding and statistical tests including Pearson correlation and multiple regression. Results indicated that wearable technologies can enhance emotional connections through personalized interactions (r=0.72, p<0.001), creating a sense of proximity (β=0.65, p<0.01), and facilitating two-way communications (β=0.58, p<0.01). These findings offer new perspectives for marketing strategies and customer relationship management in the digital age, highlighting the potential of wearable technologies as a powerful tool for building and maintaining emotional bonds between human brands and their audiences. The study contributes to the growing body of literature on technology-mediated brand relationships and provides practical implications for marketers seeking to leverage wearable technologies in their brand communication strategies.

The flow of mapping the development and direction of research on Socioeconomic Factors in the Education Ecosystem is known through published articles with the Scopus database index. Quantitative approach is used as the article research with bibliometric data analysis techniques to explore all publications indexed in the Scopus database on Socioeconomic Factors in the Education Ecosystem from 1990 to 2023. The data obtained were analyzed using Excel and R/R-Studio. VOSViewer is used to perform visual analysis of keyword occurrence and document citations stimulantly. Researchers found 772 publications that fit the function, subject, and criteria that had been set. The annual growth rate is seen in the data obtained. The papers are analyzed in terms of publications by field of science, the number of studies published annually. The bibliometric data analysis performed was limited to Scopus data. Other national and international databases were not taken into account in the study. The limitation of this study is only taking data sets or meta data in publications indexed by Scopus. This article presents a brief overview of the literature accessible to researchers working in the field of Socioeconomic Factors in the Education Ecosystem as well as provides recommendations for future research.

This study investigates the emerging applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in strategic management and its impact on organizational decision-making processes. As AI technology rapidly advances, it has become a crucial component in redefining organizational strategies. According to a global survey by the Boston Consulting Group, over 60% of executives believe that AI can significantly improve key performance indicators and enhance opportunities for strategic differentiation and sustainable competitive advantages. Using a descriptive-survey methodology and questionnaire-based data collection, this research examines the influence of AI on strategic decision-making in large organizations. The statistical population comprises senior managers across various industries, with sampling conducted through convenience sampling. Data analysis was performed using SMART-PLS software, revealing significant improvements in strategic decision-making processes through AI implementation. The study demonstrates that AI, by analyzing complex data sets and identifying hidden patterns, assists managers in making more optimal decisions. Furthermore, AI's predictive analytics capabilities contribute to enhanced strategic planning and risk mitigation in decision-making processes. The research findings indicate a statistically significant positive correlation (r = 0.72, p < 0.001) between AI adoption and the quality of strategic decisions. This paper concludes by proposing that organizations should leverage AI as a tool to strengthen their organizational strategies, while emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations and human oversight. The implications of this research extend to both academic and practical domains, offering insights into the integration of AI in strategic management processes and its potential to revolutionize organizational decision-making paradigms.

Purpose: This study investigates the influence of human brands on the formation of Generation Z's digital identity. Given the increasing importance of the digital space in this generation's life, understanding how their identity is shaped by human brands in this environment is crucial. Method: Using a netnographic approach, qualitative data was collected and analyzed from 500 posts and interactions of Gen Z users on Instagram and TikTok platforms. Thematic content analysis was conducted using NVivo 12 software, with inter-coder reliability confirmed (κ = 0.85). Findings: Results indicate that human brands influence Gen Z's digital identity through three main mechanisms: 1) lifestyle emulation (β = 0.42, p < 0.001), 2) value alignment (β = 0.38, p < 0.001), and 3) self-presentation modeling (β = 0.35, p < 0.01). Multiple regression analysis showed these three factors explain 67\% of the variance in digital identity formation (R² = 0.67, F(3,496) = 335.42, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that human brands play a significant role in shaping Generation Z's digital identity. Understanding this influence can help marketers and policymakers design more effective strategies for engaging with this generation.

It is a fact, that the varying definitions and perspectives on thinking among scientists, emphasizing the influence of theoretical foundations and practical experiences on individual mental processes, would equally highligh the importance of mathematics in developing thinking skills by fostering connections between ideas, organizing information, and encouraging students to record problem-solving strategies. The professional development of mathematics teachers aims to enhance students' thinking abilities by focusing on skills such as problem-solving, abstraction, generalization, and divergent thinking. The use of puzzles and games in education to enhance students' mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills, as a significant indicator on how puzzles and games can engage students in critical thinking, logical reasoning, and creative problem-solving, leading to a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. By incorporating educational games into teaching, educators can create a fun and interactive learning environment that promotes cognitive, emotional, and psychomotor development in students. On a different note, the potential negative behaviors that can arise from games, such as fraud and deception, when the focus shifts away from educational goals, could be prevented to ensure that games are not solely recreational, do not overly emphasize winning or losing, align with social values, and are understood by students as purposeful educational activities. Additionally, fostering self-efficacy beliefs among students can enhance their persistence and success in achieving goals, as demonstrated in studies using game-based learning environments to improve mathematical skills and motivation. The current exposition showcases the significance of employing puzzles to revolutionize both theory and practice of teaching mathematics. Most potentially, some emerging open problems are provided. The paper ends with some concluding remarks combined with futuristic research pathways.

Many children who live in the interior and mountainous areas of Papua-Indonesia do not get the right of education. This research aims to formulate a theoretical concept of boarding school-based character education by implementing Papuan cultural contextual education in the process of education. The method used is a qualitative method with a grounded theory approach. The research participants were 14 people. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and textual analysis of the interview results. The data analysis technique uses the Atlas.ti application by using three levels of coding: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The research results show that there are six main concepts as a model of boarding school character education: personal development, spiritual development, extracurricular activities, clean and healthy lifestyles, learning from inspirational figures, and academic development. These six theoretical concepts can be divided into internal and external character building. One of the uniqueness of character education is the integration of local cultural values in the whole process of character education of the children, both in the school environment and in the dormitory. The results of the study provide insights for educators, schools, and government on different forms of character education models.

The purpose of this research is to find out the mediation role of employees’ brand knowledge between organizational citizenship behavior and employees behavior in hotels. Quantitative approach used in this research, and 204 online questionnaire used to collect the data from three, four, and five, hotel employees in Jordan. The findings proposed that there is a positive mediation role of employees’ brand knowledge between organizational citizenship behavior and employees’ behavior in hotels. Moreover, findings approved that organizational citizenship behavior has a positive effect on employees’ behavior and its dimensions, helping behavior, in-role performance, and creative behavior. On the other hand, organizational citizenship behavior proposed a negative effect on employees’ deviant behavior. The value and the originality of this research is to provide deep understanding and practical implications to the hotel managements and sector on how the employees in the hotels may behave and affected by their organizational citizenship behavior.

Since ancient times, music has been instrumental in giving life to the stories we build our identities and cultures around. Music perpetuates myth by storytelling, retelling and updating old stories, and creating new ones. Many musicals, such as The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Wicked, and Hamilton, have been based on novels or epic poems. I will examine adaptations on a smaller scale, of rock songs based on novels, poems, and/or myths, and look at how, in our time, music creates myth by creating its own heroes and heroines through capital and the star system. In traditional literary and cultural analysis, a distinction was drawn between the natural and the supernatural when discussing literary mythology (Frye, 1957); in the twentieth century, an equivalent distinction was made in works of art that, in Baudrillard’s terminology, make use of the realms of the real and the “hyperreal” (1981). In today’s mythmaking, the supernatural has been largely replaced by the technological, and recent developments blur the line between science fiction and fantasy; tech has become megalotech. Examples can be seen in a number of recent and current songs, as well as films and television shows about music, musicians, and the music business.

The understanding of the ‘I-Thou’ relationship is the recognition that there is a relation between one and another in the world of human being. Each individual is an entity that carries a great deal of dignity and the good appropriation of this dignity fosters a great interpersonal relationship. For there to be any peace-relation among beings, a way to human enquiry and understanding of common good and advancement, there is a need for unbiasness. In Robert Kane’s view, it is through a positive I-Thou peace-relation which is achievable through ‘openness’ that human beings sustain the moral sphere, and avoid breaking it. It will help them to arrive at truth and a way forward to any debatable issue among human beings. Openness is a form of respect for another even in the face of divided or different opinions. Hence, in any deliberation of any sort, one has to take the part of Openness by limiting narrowness of vision and choose to respect every other point of view and way of life. This will help to foster the ideal I-Thou or inter-human beings’ peace-relation in the face of obstacles and conflicts. However, he seems to take for granted the uniqueness or difference in human thinking patterns and so he creates back the problem which he sets out to resolve by not giving a stand on what truth is and how human beings can get to it when openness fails. Adopting expository and analytic methods, the research argues that Kane’s idea of Openness appears to be a solution to sustain harmony among human beings.

The present study examines the contribution of intonation to the vocal expressions of boredom in utterances. It begins by providing a theoretical overview of the role intonation plays in conveying emotions or attitudes. Further, it outlines the tonetic aspects, pitch characteristics, and other prosodic factors that participate in conveying boredom in English depending on the literature available. The study then turns to analysing sixteen tone groups taken from four Kurdish films and recorded materials of everyday spoken Kurdish. It tests and underscores the tonetic aspects and pitch characteristics of these chosen tone groups used for the expression of boredom, relying on six parameters, namely the syntactic category, the height of the pre-head, the height of the head, the tone used, the pitch range, and the key. The role of all these intonation factors is investigated. Special reference is also made to other factors such as loudness, speed of speaking, and paralinguistic features. The work shows that the cues used to convey boredom vary, although pitch and pitch variation become dominant and central. Among all the intonation cues used to express boredom, pitch range, and tone are the most relevant and useful cues.

There is limited evidence showing how developing universities in South Africa have successfully adopted and effectively used online learning to support students for positive learning experiences. Presently, there are numerous challenging factors with regards to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) adoption in South African developing universities. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the extent of online learning support for student learning at developing universities in South Africa. The study resides in an interpretive framework from a philosophical perspective as it adopts a hermeneutic framework, with the literature obtained being classified, mapped, critically assessed, and themes and arguments developed. There is scant evidence of studies conducted and published between 2000 and 2024 on online learning support as a pedagogical strategy for student learning in the developing universities in South Africa. The findings resulted in five emerging themes from the literature review. These major themes include lack of ICT governance; poor digital infrastructure; lack of ICT skills; budget constraints; and accessibility and inclusivity challenges. This study is expected to have a significant impact on the development of universities' online learning policies and practices. It will also contribute to the pedagogical strategies and frameworks of academics and scientific knowledge on how scholars should perceive online learning support in the context developing universities.

The American Civil War has been commemorated with a great variety of monuments, memorials, and markers. These monuments were erected for a variety of reasons, beginning with memorialization of the fallen and later to honor aging veterans, commemoration of significant anniversaries associated with the conflict, memorialization sites of conflict, and celebration of the actions of military leaders. Sources reveal that during both the Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras, many were erected as part of an organized propaganda campaign to terrorize African American communities and distort the past by promoting a ‘Lost Cause’ narrative. Through subsequent decades, to this day, complex and emotional narratives have surrounded interpretive legacies of the Civil War. Instruments of commemoration, through both physical and digital intervention approaches, can be provocative and instructive, as the country deals with a slavery legacy and the commemorated objects and spaces surrounding Confederate inheritances. Today, all of these potential factors and outcomes, with internationally relevance, are surrounded by swirls of social and political contention and controversy, including the remembering/forgetting dichotomies of cultural heritage. The modern dilemma turns on the question: In today’s new era of social justice, are these monuments primarily symbols of oppression, or can we see them, in select cases, alternatively as sites of conscience and reflection encompassing more inclusive conversations about commemoration? What we save or destroy and assign as the ultimate public value of these monuments rests with how we answer this question. In this essay, drawing from the testimony of scholars and artists, I address the conceptual landscape of approaches to the presentation and evolving participatory narratives of Confederate monuments that range from absolute expungement and removal to more restrained ideas such as in situ re-contextualization, removal to museums, and preservation-in-place.

The fast-paced advancements in the technological space and its application have influenced greatly its usage in teaching especially in science and mathematics subjects. The overall objective of this study was to examine the physical proximity of learning in shaping students’ mastery of technology-enhanced mathematics and science concepts. Consequently, the study investigates how technology can promote teaching presence toward the mastery of mathematics and science concepts and how the latter can be grasped by the learners using physical proximity strategies. This research study used a mixed-method research design and was conducted in Kayonza District (Eastern Province) and Gasabo District (Kigali), Rwanda. The participants were postgraduate students at the University of Rwanda, College of Education undertaking a master degree in chemistry education, mathematics education, physics education and biology education under the Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovative Teaching and Learning Mathematics and Science. A sample size of 88 students was selected from both Remera and Rukara campuses. Participants were in a range of 21-40 years old. The study used both interviews and questionnaires to collect empirical data. Qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis while quantitative data was analyzed using R software. The study reveals that a virtual lab is a vital tool in promoting teaching presence regarding the mastery of mathematics and science concepts. The use of virtual labs seems to foster instructional design and organization from teachers. Moreover, virtual labs seem to facilitate meaningful discourses, interactions between learners and between the learners and the teacher. The findings show also that virtual visualizing seems also to play a role in direct instruction where the teacher offers guidance and direction to learners on various subjects or issues of contention that may need the clarity. Thus 87.6% of the respondents affirm that technology integration in learning is efficient in bridging the gap of physical proximity among learners and teachers through various virtual instruments and platforms. The study also demonstrates that various forms of technology that can be used to bring mathematics and science concepts to the learners’ physical proximity including WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Zoom and Webex. The study therefore recommends that visualization should be integrated in the curricula, training of teachers and students to maximize physical proximity components and sharing of best practices among teachers and students.

This Research is to analyze the effect of Intellectual Quotient (IQ), Emotional Quotient (EQ), and Spiritual Quotient (SQ) to the employee performance of Inspectorate South Kalimantan Province. All of The employee are involved as the samples, 81. Data are the perception of the employee regarding the variables. Technique of analysis is using multiple linear regression. Tests involved are Model Test (F), t Test, and classic Assumption test. Significant Test is connected to pvalue. The results show that (1) Intellectual Quotient (IQ) is influencing insignificantly to the employee performance; (2) Emotional Quotient (EQ) is influencing insignificantly to the employee performance; (3) Spiritual Quotie nt (SQ) is influencing significantly to the employee performance. The results also indicate that such effects need further research. Variables should be considered are attitude, operating standar and Technology.

This study analyzed the dynamic spatial and temporal distribution of natural disasters in Traditional Authorities Ngabu and Lundu in Chikwawa District in the Lower Shire Valley. The study assessed the vulnerability of people to disasters, evaluated the value of losses and damages incurred when disasters strike and to locate disaster hotspots. The mixed design that embraces qualitative and quantitative approaches was used. Data collection methods such as in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussion, documentary review, structured interview and Participatory Geographical Information Systems (P-GIS) were employed. The study revealed that farming with 64%, 37% and 76% done before, during and after disasters respectively, was the main adaptive capacity to floods and drought in T/A Ngabu. In T/A Lundu, community members also valued farming with 58%, 55% and 70% done before, during and after disasters respectively. The study found that Traditional Environmental Knowledge Systems (TEKS) were highly valued in T/As Ngabu with 90% and Lundu 81%. The study also unveiled those disasters led to losses of human lives and livestock and damages to properties, environment and critical infrastructures. However, some community members still remained in the disaster-prone areas for farming, fishing, protecting the chieftaincy and ancestral reasons. The study also showed that CBDRM was highly adopted. However, disasters continued to occur and losses were increasing. Generally, CBDRM could be effective through multisectoral approach and good legal institutional framework. Therefore, the research recommends that further studies similar to this, should use GIS in assessing the efficacy of CBDRM approaches to produce hazard maps that will be used as models for disaster risk reduction in Chikwawa District in the Lower Shire Valley.

Abstract: This article intends to highlight and reconstruct the relationships between humans (harvesters, woodworkers and master artisans) and non-humans (raw materials, tools, places, products, etc.) in the Barniz de Pasto mopa-mopa tradition.1 These are relationships that were lost when the focus came to be primarily on the objects, as happens in most popular art forms world-wide. The text is organised in the form of ethnographic overviews: the home-workshops of the masters of Barniz de Pasto; the workshops of the woodworkers; the montañas-selvas (Andean rain-forest highlands or mountain jungle) and the mopa-mopa harvesters; and the works (objects, products, goods). Unlike a conventional article, it does not end with firm and immutable conclu-sions. Rather, the reflections resulting from ten years of accompanying artisans and harvesters during the process of patrimonialización 2 of the mopa-mopa are to be found in each of the sections, always open for discussion.

The paper reconstructs Merleau-Ponty’s philosophical project in terms of a phenomenology of sensible transcendence. According to this framework, i) any given data is correlative to a subjec-tive apprehension, ii) but it cannot be fully captured by this same experience. Therefore, subjec-tive apprehension must remain open to a type of absence or radical indeterminacy. This notion of transcendence must be grounded in bodily experience, and the challenge is to develop a notion of logos that can account for its sensible donation. We describe that the critical apparatus mobilized to achieve this goal, primarily through the notions of “field of presence” and “presentation”, re-stores a logic of consciousness in these analyses that focus on the body. Wetlands play a crucial role not only in providing ecological services but also in enriching the cultural and spiritual life of human society. Despite this, their cultural values have often been overlooked. The formal recognition of cultural values began with the Ramsar Convention in the 1970s, which acknowledged wetlands as resources of great economic, cultural, scientific, and recreational value. The wetlands of Majuli are of profound cultural and socio-cultural importance, particularly in terms of religious and spiritual significance, as well as recreational value. This study examines the cultural services provided by the wetland ecosystem of Majuli, focusing on its significance in the local human-environment nexus. Utilizing a qualitative approach with quantitative aspects, data was collected from primary sources through observation, interviews, and group discussions, along with secondary sources such as books, journals, and web portals.

There are clear signs that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a straining impact on the higher education sector in South Africa and the far reaches of the world. This chapter examines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) STEM lecturers’ experiences with digital assessments and perspectives on the continuity of digital transformation in the higher education sector in the post-COVID-19 era at one of South Africa’s rural universities. In 2022, a survey of ten (10) lecturers was conducted and the reports were also consulted by four (4) e-learning practitioners to obtain their views on the use of online learning and contact courses in the post-pandemic period. A qualitative research approach was used to understand the puzzling issues faced by STEM lecturers at a previously disadvantaged institution in Limpopo Province. The results of this study show that there is a puzzling conundrum that hinders the integration of effective online learning. Furthermore, online education as the new normal in the post-COVID-19 era seems unattainable due to extremely complex and difficult-to-understand mathematical symbols. Software and tools proved to be limitations in terms of establishing an interactive learning environment for students and lecturers on online learning platforms. Lecturers’ use of learning and teaching platforms deteriorated due to numerous unknown challenges, but also the tightening of COVID-19 restrictions. Furthermore, the results showed that science and mathematics lecturers believe that contact learning remains irreplaceable across generations and eras as some are not technology enthusiasts. This paper recommends that the lack of technological systems as well as technological resistance and reluctance to adopt transformative pedagogy and innovative practices, should not be viewed as a thorny issue to end the dominance of online education in STEM courses. This research investigates the intersection of family business practices and cultural heritage management in Malaysia, a country rich in cultural diversity. The study was motivated by the need to understand how family-run businesses contribute to preserving and promoting cultural heritage in Malaysia. Through a qualitative analysis, we examined the business strategies, cultural values, and operational models of family businesses engaged in cultural heritage sectors. Our findings reveal a unique blend of traditional values and modern business understanding, highlighting how these businesses play a crucial role in sustaining cultural heritage. Family businesses in Malaysia have developed distinctive approaches to cultural heritage management, blending traditional values with innovative strategies to navigate the challenges of modernisation and globalisation. This has implications for business practices and cultural preservation, offering insights into sustainable cultural heritage management in a rapidly evolving global landscape. The study underscores the importance of family business-based culture in the stewardship of cultural heritage. It argues for greater recognition of these businesses in policy formulation and heritage management strategies. It shows that Malaysia's symbiotic relationship between family businesses and cultural heritage presents a model that balances economic viability with cultural preservation, offering lessons for the business world and cultural heritage sectors globally.

This study investigates the impact of integrating ChatGPT on the academic writing performance and engagement of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) undergraduate students in Delhi, India, during the first semester of the academic year 2024/2025. It addresses the challenges within the Indian education system by exploring the effectiveness of AI-driven writing tools in enhancing writing skills and motivation among EFL learners. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research evaluates ChatGPT's influence on 32 EFL Indian undergraduate students through draft revisions, questionnaires, and interviews. The findings highlight ChatGPT's positive impact on writing quality, engagement levels, and immediate feedback appreciation, emphasizing its potential in improving writing instruction and student outcomes in EFL contexts. Recommendations are provided for practitioners to integrate ChatGPT in writing exercises and for researchers to conduct longitudinal studies and explore ethical considerations in AI use for educational purposes, ultimately contributing to enhanced EFL education and technology-mediated learning.

The landscape of business intelligence (BI) is marked by rapid growth, extensive research, and practical implementations, reflecting its sustained relevance in modern business strategies. This paper delves into the dynamics of BI, particularly focusing on the interplay between maturity and agility. While BI maturity emphasizes optimization and predefined goals, BI agility prioritizes adaptability and response to change. The paper highlights the contradictions between these concepts, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach in BI strategy formulation.The role of organizational culture in fostering BI agility is explored through literature review and interviews with BI professionals. Key insights include the necessity of an open culture for effective BI utilization, clear strategic vision, decision delegation, information sharing, business-IT cooperation, and a learning-oriented mindset. These cultural factors contribute significantly to BI effectiveness and the ability to navigate dynamic business landscapes. The paper proposes pillars of agile maturity supported by an open organizational culture, including efficient communication, information integration, creative problem-solving, and close collaboration between business and IT. These pillars underscore the importance of a flexible and open mindset in navigating BI challenges and ensuring sustained value. Empirical validation and further research are suggested to deepen our understanding of the impact of organizational culture on BI agility and effectiveness.

This study explores innovative strategies to enhance hands-on learning experiences in a Database Management Systems (DBMS) course while addressing challenges related to software installation complexities and financial barriers. The investigation focuses on an online course format catering to students majoring in information systems, healthcare administration, business administration, and marketing. Traditional software installation hurdles, especially for complex systems like Microsoft Access and MySQL, can impede students' engagement and access. To overcome these challenges, the study proposes leveraging cloud-based solutions and clientless remote desktop gateways like Apache Guacamole. Results indicate that these approaches effectively eliminate software installation obstacles, ensuring seamless access to essential tools for all students. The study underscores the importance of innovative technological solutions in promoting inclusive and impactful learning environments in higher education.

This study explored factors influencing the adoption of blockchain technology in US educational settings using the UTAUT2 model. Results from 160 IT officers via an online survey and PLS-SEM analysis showed that performance expectancy and social influence significantly predict behavioral intentions towards blockchain adoption, impacting actual utilization. While some factors like effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, price value, and habit did not show significant relationships, this research underscores UTAUT2's relevance in blockchain acceptance in education. Future studies should address limitations and explore diverse stakeholder perspectives for strategic implementation approaches.

This paper reports data from three sources showing young people’s positive responses to the population-wide Act-Belong-Commit mental health promotion campaign: (i) impact on 14-25 year old participants in a peer-educator workshop program; (ii) impact on 11-14 year old student participants in an adaptation of the campaign in secondary schools (the ‘Mentally Healthy Schools Framework’); and (iii) impact of the population wide media-based campaign on 18-24 and 25-34 year olds in the general population (versus those 35+ years). Overall, these findings support the conclusion that mental health promotion interventions can be based on underlying constructs relevant across the lifespan and then tailored for specific ages and settings rather than requiring the development of separate, distinct programs based on different constructs for younger age groups.

The prevailing challenge in our current era is climate change, a crisis recognized by the global community that has prompted immediate actions to confront and mitigate its consequences. There is a consensus among scientists that human activities, driven by developmental ambitions, are the driving force behind the ongoing climate crisis. “The well-documented aftermath, including the rise in sea levels, coastal erosion, reduced agricultural yields, compromised access to clean water, and health implications, emphasizes the intricate and wide-ranging effects of climate change.” Furthermore, there is an increasing recognition that climate change gives rise to distinct social, economic, and divergent consequences. “Although all countries worldwide will undergo the impacts of climate change, the distribution of these effects will differ among regions, generations, age groups, income levels, occupations, and genders.” Notably, the adverse consequences will disproportionately impact the impoverished, predominantly situated in developing nations. “This paper explores the effects of climate change on displacement and the ensuing refugee dilemma.” It aims to scrutinize the inclusion of climate-induced displacement in the present international framework, encompassing both climate change and refugee regimes. The paper promotes a human rights-centred approach to tackling displacement stemming from climate change.

Virtual tours with 360 photos present a quick, easy and accessible way to create immersive experiences. The visualization in diverse devices, provide a user experience that can be different. A virtual tour with 360 photos of the Chapel of Dolores (Tenerife), has been created. Whose access is limited to specific days, so the creation of a virtual tour allows you to visit it at any time, in addition, a pilot test has been carried out with students of the degree of restoration and conservation of cultural heritage in order to measure the user experience of the virtual tour depending on the device used. The participants took a virtual tour of the Dolores Chapel, first with a cell phone and then with the virtual reality headset, and then completed a user experience questionnaire. The results obtained comparing both visualization technologies are detailed, highlighting that when using the virtual reality headset no better results are obtained in the immersion subscale, in addition, the visualization on a Smartphone is more comfortable and obtains better results in consequences such as dizziness and vertigo. Therefore, it may be an interesting strategy to have simple versions that work quickly on the cell phones.

Being forced to live in an area following a catastrophic landslide may adversely impact people's mental well-being. Unprivileged communities such as Adivasis, Dalits, plantation workers, and people with low incomes in Kerala's hilly districts are forced to live in landslide-affected areas despite their fear. This paper examines the fears and concerns of landslide survivors from the marginalized sections of society from a broader framework of the political economy of mental health. This approach aligns with the assertion made by the World Health Organisation that individual factors do not solely determine mental health but are intricately linked to broader social, political, and economic circumstances. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with fatal landslide survivors and key informants [ ]. The study employed thematic data analysis from in-depth interviews of various fatal landslide survivors since 2018. The three major themes unveiled in the analysis are: 1. post-disaster fears, 2. The factors that triggered fear and concern and 3. Socio-economic marginality and mental health. The study asserts that individuals who are poor and unprivileged are highly susceptible to mental health issues associated with landslides.

This paper explores indigenous perspectives on the understanding and management of cultural heritage within the Mapungubwe and Makgabeng Cultural landscapes in South Africa. State-based management system paid little attention to indigeneity resulting in contested interpretation of the archaeological past. This by-passing of indigenous input is a product of colonial and apartheid policies that glorified Western practices at the expense of black African heritage stakeholders. World heritage mechanisms are also skewed in favor of modern practice which is overly designed to be sensitive to tangible aspects of the past than the intangible elements that make up much of indigenous African heritage. We used the archaeology of Mapungubwe and Makgabeng Cultural landscapes as a test case for the impact of indigenous voices on heritage, but the results have wider applicability. We employed semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions to gather qualitative data that we calibrated with our lived experiences as products of Tsonga-speakers from this broader landscape. The results expose that indigenous people use physical manifestation of sites, ethnographic inquiry, names, oral history, spirit mediums, landscape memory, genealogy, and praise poetry to identify, interpret, evaluate, and manage their cultural heritage. Additionally, indigenous perspectives which rely on collective memory, ritual practices, and indigenous knowledge systems have huge potential for enriching our understanding of the archaeological heritage. We propose a more inclusive archaeology and heritage management practice that involve indigenous groups in the identification, interpretation, grading, and presentation of the African past.

Open science, accessibility and knowledge sharing, especially of articles and monographs stemming from a publicly funded research, seem to be quite a positive direction in the development of science and have received almost unanimous approval from a scientific community. However, when it comes to data sharing, the data obtained by qualitative methodology deserve special attention and treatment. Although FAIR principles provide ways to anonymise the data and interlocoutors (as explained in Celjak et al 2020) individuals coming from smaller communities or even communities of practice can sometimes be easily regcognized by members of the same communitiy, especially if the data refers to audio files! The researcher is obliged to thoroughly describe the ways in which the data will be managed and used, and if it will state that the data will be managed in line with FAIR principles, this will inevitably impact the narratives collected. The prerogative to make all the data open will inevitably lead to autocesorship i.e. in creating a kind of FAIRy Tales for the future, interlocutors will share with researchers. Having all that in mind I argue for a more vigilant approach when embracing the idea that all the data should be made FAIR. Not all the data should be made FAIR because this could, in the end, compromise the research process itself. Some data must remain in the space of trust created between main actors in the research process. These data should be treated with CARE principles.

Abstract This study investigates the assessment literacy, perceived practice, and observed practice of CBA practices among TVET teachers and assessors in private TVET colleges in South Gonder Zone, Ethiopia. The participants included 49 teachers and 14 assessors. Data collection utilized a modified four-option multiple-choice test, the Teacher Assessment Competency Inventory Questionnaire, a five-point Likert scale for perceived and observed practices, a semi-structured observation checklist, and interviews. Descriptive analysis, including mean scores, standard deviation, one-sample t-test, and proportions (%), was employed to analyze the data. Pearson correlation test was used to explore relationships between teacher assessment test scores, observed practices, and perceived practices. Findings revealed that private TVET teachers in the Amhara National Regional State lacked competence in assessing students' competence, falling short of overall and specific standards in both the assessment competence test and real classroom practice. Despite this, teachers modestly perceived their assessment practices across competency domains. Consequently, there were significant differences between teachers' actual competence and practice in educational assessments and their self-perceived practice. Qualitative approaches, employing theme analysis of assessment practice from semi-structured observations and interviews, highlighted poor performance among teachers on most assessment criteria. A small percentage demonstrated competence in specific concepts. Overall, the majority of teachers exhibited low levels of assessment literacy, suggesting a need for professional support in educational assessment approaches to enhance competence among TVET teachers.

Over the last two decades, knowledge production, research and reconfiguration of universities have been understood as ways of giving new meanings to the university-society binomial. In this regard, humanities are the subject of multiple debates in the face of ideas about their impact in relation to the "other sciences". Based on these premises, this article sets out to explore possible meanings attributed by researchers to the concepts of commitment, mobilization and transfer of research in humanities in view of the debates on the university-society interaction and the third mission of the university (Alonso, Cuschnir and Napoli, 2021). The methodology used will address bibliographical analysis, theoretical background and statements from different institutions, as well as the analysis of material from four interviews. As a first instance, the preliminary results show that strengthening critical thinking as forms of commitment emerge as central senses, focusing on hungarian characteristics and productions in order to unravel the ways of understanding and imagining Eastern European reality. In this respect, the discussion of certain western knowledge is seen as a task associated with social commitment with public universities as a focus of resistance.

Purpose: The pandemic, named COVID-19, which shook global economy, production and trade has equally affected the social and domestic lives of ours. In this study the COVID-19’s impact has been investigated on lack of social interaction, financial stress and how it influences the domestic violence in a developing country like Pakistan. The study focuses on some of the important factors that are root causes of increased domestic violence in Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach: The study is quantitative and survey questionnaire has been conducted for structural equation modelling (SEM) to evaluate the hypotheses. The modified scale was validated using confirmatory factor analysis, the Purposive and snowball sampling technique is used for collecting data from 200 respondents of Punjab Pakistan for data analysis through SPSS and SmartPLS. Findings: It is revealed that Covid 19 has a significant effect on lack of social interaction and financial stress. Moreover, lack of social interaction and financial stress also enhances domestic violence. Finally, lack of social interaction and financial stress mediates COVID-19 and domestic violence. Originality/value: This study appears to be frontier research which determines the impact of COVID-19 on lack of social interaction, financial stress and domestic violence particularly in a developing country like Pakistan.

On entering higher education, students from disadvantaged schools seem unable to cope with new academic demands and all too often the need for adjustment is attributed to under-preparedness. The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors contributing to and mitigating the alienation of students in institutions of higher learning. The narrative inquiry with a qualitative method was employed to obtain the perceptions of 51 selected first-level science university students on their experiences. This is a case of the University of Venda first-year level students registered in the 2023 academic year. The findings of this paper build on and contribute to the literature on understanding alienation in higher education. In particular, the key findings of this paper reveal that the students failed to quickly adapt to a different culture of teaching and learning; the academic workload was overwhelming, and lecturers were unapproachable Students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds especially struggled to assimilate into the new university culture of teaching and learning. This paper concludes by recommending that there is a serious need to take cognisance of the influx of previously disadvantaged students into institutions that were not created with them in mind. Universities and their teaching staff should recognise the culturally diverse nature of the student body and thereby restructure teaching and assessment to foster social justice to promote student success.

This project delves deep into Armenian inscriptions, employing advanced digital tools and strategies like the Oxygen text editor and EpiDoc guidelines to efficiently catalogue, analyze, and present these historical treasures. Amidst the adversities posed by Azerbaijan's stance towards Armenian heritage in Artsakh, the digital documentation and preservation of these inscriptions have become a beacon of cultural resilience. The XML-based database ensures consistent data, promoting scholarly research and broadening accessibility. Integrating the Grabar Armenian dictionary addressed linguistic challenges, enhancing data accuracy. This initiative goes beyond merely preserving stone and text; it is a testament to the stories, hopes, and enduring spirit of the Armenian people in the face of external threats. Through a harmonious blend of technology and traditional knowledge, the project stands as a vanguard in the fight to ensure that Armenia's rich epigraphic legacy and the narratives they enshrine remain undiminished for future generations.

The study investigates the effect of corporate governance characteristics on the financial performance of 124 Indian-listed companies that have undergone mergers and acquisitions during 2014–2020. It employs several performance measures, such as short-term capital market performance, long-term capital market performance, accounting-based and market-based measures, and firm-level control factors. The study found board size to be a positive and significant factor affecting short-term market performance. Further, it also documents weak linkages with other corporate governance variables like board independence, CEO duality, etc. Regarding control variables, leverage, the company's age, price-to-book ratio, and research and development expenses significantly impact the acquiring companies' financial returns. The study's findings add to our understanding of corporate governance's impact on performance in cases such as mergers and acquisitions.

In the ever-evolving landscape of higher education, the shift to hybrid teaching approaches has introduced novel challenges and opportunities for both educators and students. This qualitative study, grounded in a robust theoretical framework, combines in-depth literature reviews, informal interviews, observations, and thematic analysis to explore the multifaceted dynamics of hybrid language learning within a College of Arts and Sciences. By investigating the experiences of twenty students (referred to as 'S-Part 1' to 'S-Part 20'), the research delves into the core theme of 'Teacher-Student Interaction in Higher Education Institutions' and unpacks nine additional themes: 'Adaptability and Resilience,' 'Flexibility and Autonomy,' 'Connectivity Challenges,' 'Feelings of Isolation,' 'Technology Competence,' 'Personalized Learning,' 'Resource Accessibility,' 'Support Mechanisms,' and 'Positive Learning Experiences.' In this study, these themes encapsulate the diverse experiences and challenges encountered by teachers and college students as they navigate the evolving educational landscape. The insights derived from the study are underpinned by a robust theoretical framework and complemented by existing scholarly literature. As we delve into these themes, it becomes evident that they shed light on not only the intricacies of hybrid language learning but also the broader educational context, offering valuable guidance for educators, institutions, students, and researchers. Based on the ample results, recommendations are presented for school administrators, teachers, students, and future researchers to enhance the quality of hybrid teaching and learning, aligning it with the demands of the post-academic era. Overall, this study contributes to the ongoing dialogue on innovative pedagogical strategies and responsive educational environments, underlining the significance of teacher-student interaction in the new normal of higher education.

This experimental research study investigates the influence of ChatGPT on student learning behavior and offers insights into its potential drawbacks.

This research article examines the state-wise literacy rates in India, with a focus on male and female literacy, as well as the disparities between them. The data was sourced from a survey conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO), with a special emphasis on Union Territories and Northeastern states based on the 2011 Census. Kerala boasts the highest literacy rate at 96.2%, while Andhra Pradesh reports the lowest at 66.4%. Notably, the national male-female literacy gap stands at 12.9%. Kerala also demonstrates the smallest gender gap at 2.2%, while Rajasthan exhibits the highest at 23.3%. Through descriptive and explorative analysis, this article provides a comprehensive overview of literacy rates across various Indian states and Union Territories, highlighting the significant disparities that exist.

Virtual Reality (VR) technology in education has the potential to revolutionize the Indian school education system. This research study investigates the present state of VR adoption, perceived benefits, concerns, and future expectations among both students and educators. The survey-based approach collected responses from 45,000 students and 2,000 educators across a diverse range of schools in India. The findings highlight a mixed current landscape with significant room for expansion in VR utilization. Both students and educators express optimism regarding the benefits of VR, recognizing its capacity to enhance engagement, comprehension, and motivation in the learning process. However, challenges, including budget constraints, the need for training and support, and concerns about student safety, must be addressed to effectively integrate VR into education. Expectations for the future emphasize inclusivity, accessibility, and customized learning experiences. The research underscores the transformative potential of VR in Indian education while emphasizing the necessity of addressing practical challenges for its successful implementation.

This study assesses the impact and sustainability of community development initiatives in Awgbu, Anambra State, spanning from 2015 to 2023. Using qualitative research methods, including interviews with key informants from the Awgbu community and government personnel. The observatory method is also applied which helped the researcher to see activities executed in the community. The research investigates the specific contributions of the Awgbu community to the overall development of Anambra State, how the community has benefitted from state government initiatives, and the extent to which the community responds to government requests and initiatives. The study also explores challenges in the relationship between the state government and Awgbu in terms of community development initiatives and offers recommendations for enhancing this relationship. The findings reveal that the Awgbu community has made significant contributions to the development of Anambra State, particularly in areas such as security, education, and infrastructure. The community has actively responded to government calls, participating in initiatives like the Choose Your Project Initiative (CYPI) and vigilante groups, thus fostering a positive and mutually beneficial relationship with the state government. However, challenges such as leadership crises and communication gaps exist, hindering the community's progress. Recommendations include improving community leadership, enhancing communication, and promoting peace to ensure sustainable community development. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamics between communities and government in achieving sustainable development and highlights the importance of collaborative efforts for positive outcomes. The findings have managerial and policy implications for both local communities and governments seeking to enhance community development initiatives and foster mutually beneficial relationships.

Persons with stroke-induced aphasia (PWAs) are often impaired in tense/time reference (TR) production. It is not clear, however, whether PWAs’ impaired TR production is due to TR-related encoding or retrieval deficits. This study aims at disentangling TR-related encoding deficits from TR-related retrieval deficits in aphasia. Two sentence completion tasks (SCTs) tapping production of past and future reference were administered to eight Greek-speaking PWAs, eight Russian-speaking PWAs, six Italian-speaking PWAs, seven English-speaking PWAs and four groups of language-, age- and education-matched healthy controls. SCT 1 tapped TR-related encoding processes and TR-related retrieval processes to a similar extent. SCT 2 predominantly tapped TR-related retrieval processes. All four control groups performed at ceiling. Three Greek-speaking PWAs, one Russian-speaking PWA, three Italian-speaking PWAs and two English-speaking PWAs showed between-task dissociations. A double dissociation emerged, as some Greek-, Russian- and English-speaking PWAs performed better on SCT 1 than on SCT 2, whereas other Greek- and Italian-speaking PWAs performed worse on SCT 1 than on SCT 2. It will be shown that the experimental design employed here has the potential to disentangle TR-related encoding deficits from TR-related retrieval deficits, as both PWAs with selective TR-related encoding deficits and PWAs with selective TR-related retrieval deficits were identified.

The findings resonate with a clarion call for educational institutions to synchronize curricula with industry requisites, nurturing graduates with the critical thinking and communication skills imperative for heightened employability. Amidst this voyage, it becomes evident that personal aspirations wield remarkable influence in carving distinct career trajectories, underscoring the indispensable role of comprehensive career guidance and counseling within educational domains. Noteworthy is the profound impact of the ever-changing economic dynamics of the Philippines on the employability of these alumni, demanding perpetual adaptation in educational paradigms. Remarkably, the collective contributions of these graduates span diverse academic programs, attesting to their positive workforce imprint. Further exploration reveals a substantial proportion engaging in post-graduate education and training to enrich their qualifications. In a remarkable testament to their educational journey, alumni manifest a notably high level of job satisfaction, buoyed by facets like work-life equilibrium and employment stability. Overall, this tracer study is poised to drive transformative shifts in higher education, advocating for curricular harmonization, amplified career support, holistic skill cultivation, resilience to economic fluctuations, and sustained research to remain aligned with the dynamic job market. In this study, we investigate the existence of positive solutions within a system of Riemann-Liouville fractional differential equations that incorporate the (r1,r2,r3)-Laplacian operator while being subject to three-point boundary conditions. These equations incorporate various fractional derivatives and are influenced by parameters represented as (ψ1,ψ2,ψ3). Our approach involves employing techniques such as cone expansion and compression of the functional type, in conjunction with the Leggett-Williams fixed point theorem, to establish the existence of positive solutions. To emphasize the practical significance of our findings in the realm of fractional differential equations, we provide two illustrative examples.

In an ever-evolving landscape of higher education, this study delves into the transformative potential of merging deep learning principles and meaningful pedagogy in language acquisition, aided by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Through comprehensive data collection methods, including literature review, interviews, and classroom observations, the study presents insights from 30 participants from SMC. The qualitative findings reveal emerging themes related to deep learning, meaningful learning, AI integration, and language acquisition, underscoring their profound impact on teaching methods and student engagement. This research contributes to the field by shedding light on innovative approaches that elevate language acquisition in an AI-evolving educational environment. The study concludes with implications for school administrators, teachers, and students, offering recommendations for future research directions, ultimately striving to enhance language education in the modern era.

This research enriches digital ethnography and cultural dynamics, offering fresh perspectives on the symbiotic relationship between digital culture and traditional beliefs, underscored by data from a maximum purposeful sampling of thirty (30) participants. Overall, this exploration emphasizes digital culture's dynamic role in shaping and reflecting cultural convictions, contributing to the understanding of cultural dynamics and evolving digital ethnography in the academic landscape.

Massification in higher education has made the satisfaction of students’ needs a difficult conundrum among university lecturers. In contrast, the use of innovative design for collaborative learning enhances student engagement in the populous student’s context. Moreover, this paper aims to extensively explore innovative designs for fostering student engagement and collaborative learning among first-year students at the University of Venda. The study employed a qualitative research method with the purposive sampling technique. Subsequently, a group of 200 students was the population of this study. Participant Observation and narrative inquiry were used as data collection instruments. The students in their respective groups were assigned topics from the module content to use their talents to demonstrate their understanding of certain content in the module. The non-surprising findings of this paper elucidated that collaborative learning expedites students’ mastery of key concepts and subject content. The module lecturers introduced students to these innovative designs to ensure collaborative learning and effective student engagement. The key findings elucidated these aspects namely, role-playing exercises, group projects, peer-to-peer learning, use of talents, and peer feedback. The implication of this study is that students learn to work together, delegate responsibilities and communicate effectively to attain a common goal. Using these strategies, the lecturers promote collaboration among students and foster a more engaging and interactive learning experience. This paper further recommends efficient and effective techniques and strategies to foster student engagement and collaboration to track and monitor at-risk students timeously.

This study aimed to explore the experiences of teachers in the recovery of educational skills. Specifically, ten teachers of Andap National High School are selected for the in-depth interview. This study employed a qualitative-phenomenological research design of which in-depth interview (IDI) was used in gathering the data. The study utilized phenomenological approach to study a particular phenomenon concerning the post-pandemic experiences of teachers in the implementation of the face-to-face classes. After gathering sufficient amount of data through the conduct of in-depth interviews, thematic analysis was used to analyse further the results and to check the disparities and similarities of all responses gathered. This was the time wherein responses were categorized and organized into themes. The findings of the study revealed that the challenges encountered of educational skills recovery were sources of learning materials, learning gaps, learners characteristics, difficulty with comprehension and lack of interest. It was also revealed that the most challenging teaching experiences in the recovery of educational skills were catching attention, learning gaps, communicating to students, need for remedial instruction, retroactive interference and difficulty in understanding English Language. They frequently have to quickly convert lesson material they had intended to teach in a classroom setting to any learning modality implemented. Further, adjust and learn new trend, provide opportunities to develop new skills, helps to manage stress, improved educational outcomes, become well-rounded teacher, networking and learning and continue doing responsibilities helped in these insights had in confronting challenges brought by the pandemic.

This study explores the relationship between mental and physical therapeutic through three dimensions: man-environment relationships; a sense of place and symbolic landscapes. The study used a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Local residents living in the coastal area of Xinglin Bay are the research objects. Quantitative data analysis revealed that the frequency of residents' visits was an important variable affecting their physical and treatment perceptions. In addition, the significance is higher for females than for males. The text analysis shows that the environment, especially the ecological restoration of water quality and migratory birds, is of great significance to the identity of local residents. Daily activities contribute to a sense of place and are what make the coast a place of therapeutic landscape function.

By addressing gaps in the literature, it provides a deeper understanding of the phenomena at hand. The implications of this study extend to the development of interventions and strategies that address self-denial tendencies, promote effective time management, and foster a supportive learning environment. Community-led initiatives have emerged as powerful drivers of change in the realm of local environmental protection. This qualitative study, conducted in Acmac, Iligan City in 2020, delves into the motivations, strategies, challenges, and outcomes of community-led initiatives, shedding light on their transformative potential. Through interviews, participant observations, and document analysis, the study explores the themes of community empowerment, collaborative decision-making, environmental justice, sustainable practices, and policy advocacy. The findings reveal the significance of bottom-up approaches, emphasizing the role of community engagement in achieving environmental sustainability. The study contributes to the literature by filling gaps in understanding and providing insights into the dynamics and effectiveness of community-led initiatives. The implications of the findings extend beyond the local context, highlighting the need for inclusive environmental practices and policy frameworks. By fostering community empowerment and collaborative action, this research sets the stage for future research and the promotion of community-led initiatives worldwide.

In Japan, bariatric surgical treatment was started in 1982. The Japanese Society for Treatment of Obesity (JSTO) was established in 2007 and then JSTO started national registry of bariatric surgery cases and multidisciplinary educational program. 44 facilities registered 4055 bariatric surgical cases until 2021. In this study, the purpose is to clarify the indication, the safety and the effectiveness of the sleeve gastrectomy using national registry data base compiled by JSTO. Preoperative BMI was ranged from 27.6 to 90.7kg/m², and the mean value was 42.7. As gender, men/women was 1/1.3. Age was 42.2 as mean.　As preoperative comorbidities, DM ratio was 54.4% of the patients, Hypertension 64.5%, dyslipidemia 65.1%, and sleep apnea syndrome 69.8%. As operation method, laparoscopic method were taken in 99.7% of the cases. The intra operative incidents rate was 0.9 %. Conversion rate to open method was 1.1%. Postoperative morbidity ratio was 5.6% and mortality was 0 %. Reoperations were performed in 1.5 % of the cases. Postoperative hospital stay was 5 days in Median value. Body weight loss was 27.6 kg in the mean value after follow up days of 279±245. As the effect on the preoperative metabolic comorbidities, DM has improved in 82.9 % of the cases, hypertension 67.9 % and Dyslipidemia 66.6%. In conclusion, using JSTO database, we evaluated the indication, postoperative complications and weight loss effect of sleeve gastrectomy in Japan. Regarding the evaluation of the effect on preoperative comorbidities, future follow-up based on more detailed criteria was considered to be necessary.

A roadmap is proposed that defines a systematic approach for craft preservation and its evaluation. The proposed roadmap aims at deepening craft understanding, so blueprints of appropriate tools that support craft documentation, education, and training can be designed while achieving preservation through the stimulation and diversification of practitioner income. A roadmap is required because understanding making activities that include “care, judgement, and dexterity” [1] call for interdisciplinary contributions from Anthropology, Cognitive Science, Art History, as well as Physical and Computational Sciences, to cover the multifaceted expression of crafts as living and developing heritage, as a source of income, and as the expression of the mind through “imagery, technology, and sedimented knowledge” [2]. In addition to this roadmap, an evaluation strategy is proposed to validate the efficacy of the developed results and provide a benchmark for the efficacy of craft preservation approaches. The proposed contribution aims at the catalysation of craft education and training with digital aids, widening access and engagement to crafts, economising learning, increasing exercisability, and relaxing remoteness constraints in craft learning.

This work discusses the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and pollution in Spain using an autoregressive distributed lag regression model (ARDL) from 1961 to 2018. The authors apply the theoretical context of pollution haven/halo and conclude that FDI in Spain does not contribute to the transfer of green technologies for cleaner production, despite being included within the European environmental regulatory framework. The authors also verify the adequacy of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) and the Load Capacity Curve hypothesis (LCC) in the Spanish environmental context and find that income per capita has a positive effect on environmental sustainability and quality. In this sense, the further development of an efficient renewable energy infrastructure could efficiently drive to a better standards all pollution indexes in Spain, including nuclear energy production, contributing the emissions neutrality aimed by the EU by 2050.

The province of Jaén (Andalusia, Spain), despite being declared the European territory with the largest number of defensive constructions (castles, fortifications, etc.), has few conservation plans, with many remains included on the Red List of Spanish Heritage ly-ing abandoned. This poses a challenge for landscape conservation and the optimal use of the province’s tourism potential. In this paper we present the early implementation of an ongoing methodological approach designed to alleviate this situation. It takes advantage of data from the Sentinel 2A and 2B satellites, HBIM, RPAS, GIS and fieldwork that will be applied across five archaeological case studies. It has been tested for the first time in the village of Magaña. Three main objectives and phases of this methodological approach have been designed: 1. Preparation of an Environmental Risk Chart with which to answer such ques-tions as “How have climate change, anthropic alterations and environmental characteris-tics affected the state of conservation of certain heritage sites?” 2. Preparation of HBIM models to foster monitorisation and conservation policies for the main archaeological remains and improving their protection based on digital and technological tools. 3. Building a Smart Tourism App for mobile devices aimed at promoting smart tourism by digitalising and virtualising tourist itineraries and archaeological remains. Finally, public administrations will be apprised of the need to implement a conservation policy for cultural assets and their surroundings in a simple, quick and cost-effective man-ner.

Since its introduction almost 50 years ago, the concept of ‘flow’ has been descriptive of optimal experiences, also in relation to play. However, the explorative nature of play leads to some discrepancies between flow and the optimal experience of play. In this paper the differences between flow and play are explored, leading to proposing the state of ‘wonder’ (directed at exploration) as an alternative to ‘flow’. From this perspective, the study further explores how we may design toys that enable meaningful experiences of play, identifying opportunities in designing for toys as the enablers of immersed experiences of wonder.

The paper draws attention and opens the debate on major societal issues that concern not only Muslims but human societies, at large, because of their profound implications, afflictions, and their present and future transitive dimensions. The paper discusses two major issues that have attracted a great deal of attention in the recent past: wealth and income disparities, and global indebtedness. Four remedies have stressed upon and/or proposed to eradicate and/or lessen some of the burdens of these problems have been thoroughly examined. These are: - Stripping commercial banks of their power to create money out of thin air (i.e., Ex Nihilo). Thus, reviving financial reform in line with the spirit of the call for the “Establishment of a National Bank [in England]” in the 1820s by the renowned British economist David Ricardo (1772-1823). The Bank of England was a private commercial entity at that time. - Prohibiting of ‘harmful’ speculation activities in financial and economic transactions and/or imposing hefty taxes on transactions relating to such activities. The implementation of such a policy requires and clear-cut distinction between the ‘harmful’ and ‘non-harmful’ speculative activities in financial and non-financial markets. - Levying adequate and fair taxes on the wealthiest upper class at the global scene. Calls for such a policy is on rise in the past few years. For instance, “Speakers at the European Development Days summit in Brussels, [in 2017], said that a just tax system should be “at the heart” of the development debate, and that more transparency is needed to ensure that companies pay their fair share. Tax avoidance schemes used by multinational companies, such as moving profits to tax havens, result in global losses of around $650 billion a year in tax receipts — with developing countries losing $200 billion, according to a study from the International Monetary Fund”, (Edwards, 2017; Crivello et al., 2015, p. 21) - Establishing a neutral legislative and tax regimes for different modes of financing. Thus, providing ‘a level playing field’ for equity and debt modes of financing due to the current biasness of the tax regimes to debt-based financing instruments as it has been documented in various studies carried out by the IMF, the European Commission, and other international prominent bodies.

Humanity’s path to avoiding extinction is a daunting and inevitable challenge which proves difficult to solve, partially due to the lack of data and evidence surrounding the concept. We aim to address this confusion by addressing the most dangerous threats to humanity, in hopes of providing a direction to approach this problem. Using a probabilistic mode, we observed the effects of nuclear war, climate change, asteroid impacts, artificial intelligence and pandemics, which are the most harmful disasters in terms of their extent of destruction on the length of human survival. We consider the starting point of the predicted average number of survival years as the present calendar year. Nuclear war, when sampling from an artificial normal distribution, results in an average human survival time of 60 years into the future starting from the present, before a civilization-ending disaster. While climate change results in an average human survival time of 193 years, the simulation based on impact from asteroids results in an average of 1754 years. Since the risks from asteroid impacts could be considered in the far future, it can be concluded that nuclear war, climate change, and pandemics are presently the most prominent threats to humanity. Additionally, the danger from superiority of artificial intelligence over humans, although abstract in its sense, is a factor of careful study and could also have wide ranging implications, impeding man’s advancements towards becoming a more advanced civilization.

The history of life on Earth has been shaped by a series of major evolutionary innovations. While some of these innovations occur repeatedly, some of the most important innovations are evolutionary singularities, arising only once. This fact has often been interpreted to mean that singularities are particularly difficult, low-probability evolutionary events, implying the long-term course of life on Earth is highly contingent. Alternatively, singularities could arise from evolutionary priority effects, where first-movers suppress subsequent independent origins. Here, we disentangle these hypotheses by examining the origins of phototrophy. The ability to use light for energy evolved independently twice, preserving information about their origins that is lost when examining singularities. We show that the two forms of phototrophy occupy opposite ends of key trade-offs: most importantly efficiency of light capture vs. return on investment. Our results suggest that the dual singularity of phototrophy exists due to evolutionary interactions between nascent phototrophs, within a phototrophic niche space too large for a single first mover to fill all niches and fully suppress all future innovation. While often ignored over geological time scales, ecological interactions and evolutionary priority effects may play a fundamental role in the tempo and mode of major evolutionary innovations.

The article presents a literature review of three Chinese manuscripts containing natural dyes recipes and three containing synthetic dyes from the Ming Dynasty to the Republican Period. The manuscripts mentioned were exclusively used as references and sources. Four databases were used to access the original documents, then, a translation from old mandarin to Spanish was made. For natural dyes, the results show four dyestuffs were commonly used to produce colors, sappanwood (Caesalpinia sappan L.), followed by safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), indigo (Indigofera tinctoria L.), and sophora (S. japonicum L.). While the synthetic dyes exported to or produced in China were mainly bluish, greenish, and violet probably because they were difficult to obtain from natural ones. The literature review of the dyes and their recipes can be a key factor in any art history or conservation study, improving the understanding of how the colors were achieved and as complementary information for analytical analyses. It provides useful details that contribute to the preservation of Chinese dye history on silk heritage.

Aesthetic ability is a powerful tool that can enhance student learning outcomes in arts education. This study not only determines the effect of aesthetic ability on student learning but also determines the effects of different factors on improvement in students' aesthetic abilities. The data used to investigate the mentioned relationships have been obtained from randomly selected 322 undergraduate students of arts education at different universities in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. The reliability of the data has been tested through Cronbach’s Alpha and regression analysis has been employed to determine the relationships among variables. Study findings revealed that teacher role, clarity of teaching goal, scientific plan, students' guidance, future creation, learning reflection, participation in exhibitions, improvement of art, appreciation of artwork, and innovative teaching methods influence student learning positively and significantly. Further, the effect of improvement in aesthetic ability on student learning has been found to be positive and significant. Based on the findings, some important implications have been discussed at the end of the study.

Abstract The article discusses about the current situation of Novel Corona Virus also called as the COVID-19 that hinder for all human’s life including the education. Rapidly escalating COVID-19, has caused havoc in quality education and every educational institution are closed. As the UNESCO report it showed that 1.6 billion children being affected due to the close of institution across 191 countries. With the alternative method every education institution started blended learning virtual classes in order to continue learning environment in students. The articles investigate COVID-19 impact on student’s quality education in Nepal and social work implication. The findings of the study shows that the COVID-19 has seriously effects on the students learning environment. It showed the huge gap between getting the good education in Nepal. However, Nepal has also made some policies to provide equal quality education to all the children through the ICT and also encourage social work to actively participate on providing education to all the majority of group children in Nepal. Whereas social work applied the micro, messo, and macro level of implication in practice to provide the education for children in remote area of Nepal.

Human-driven biodiversity destruction are responsible for significant and sustained heritage losses in Africa. In Venda, northern South Africa, biodiversity losses are eroding the existence of sacred places. Such places define the essence of indigenous people’s identity and well-being. We highlight how developments in Venda such as mining and agricultural expansion since apartheid times have destroyed biodiversity in the broader landscape, undermining efforts to reduce hunger and poverty. Thathe forest, Lake Fundudzi and Phiphidi waterfalls are central to Venda mythology and legends, origins and identity and are key towards conserving current biodiversity and heritage losses.

Globalization plays a very important role in the advancement of science and technology today, especially in Indonesia. Globalization has also succeeded in changing all aspects of human life. In addition to having a positive impact on the development of science and technology in Indonesia, globalization also has a negative impact that is quite visible on the character of today's youth. The crisis of the character of Indonesian youth is a serious matter and is reflected in the behavior of Indonesian youth today which does not coincide with the identity of the Indonesian nation and the values ​​of Pancasila. This paper examines the lack of implementation of Pancasila values ​​in the life of the globalization era and also how globalization affects moral decadence among the younger generation. The method used is the Literature Review method, which is a qualitative research method by collecting data from the literature. The lack of practice of Pancasila values ​​and the emergence of globalization is increasingly diminishing the character of Indonesian youth. The implementation of Pancasila values ​​among teenagers needs to be increased so that the nation's moral character is not eroded by the currents of globalization.

Background: Currently, Indonesia is entering an era that is all digital and uses technology in all fields of activity. The internet has a lot to do with their behavior or character. Millennials are the nation's next generation. The emergence of the digital era caused by globalization has made the millennial generation less appreciative and practicing the values ​​of Pancasila. In this case, character education is something that must be applied to the millennial generation. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the characteristics of the millennial generation, the role of character education in realizing the values ​​of Pancasila in the daily life of the millennial generation, how to cultivate an attitude of patriotism and nationalism towards the nation by practicing Pancasila, and provide motivation for the millennial generation to realize these values. Pancasila values. Methods: This study uses a literature review method. The search for journals was carried out using the google scholar database with the keywords “Character Education”, “millenial generation”, and “Pancasila”. The journals selected are journals from 2019 to 2020. Results: By applying character education to the millennial generation, it will make it easier for them to practice the values ​​of Pancasila. Pancasila should be the way of life of the millennial generation. Recommendation and limitation: As millennials, we must protect the country from values ​​that are contrary to Pancasila. Character education must be applied following the nature of the millennial generation itself. Of course, the applied character education must prioritize and be based on the values ​​of Pancasila as well.

This research described the fundamental inspiration behind the implementation of a humanistic approach to the principal's leadership and the steps of the principal's humanistic approach that have an impact on optimizing the implementation of the program for strengthening character education. This research used a qualitative approach, a case study design. The data collection was performed through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies to achieve the research objectives. Data analysis used a modified analytic analysis method. The level of credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability was the basis of data validity. The research findings explained that personal excellence (integrity, wholeness, and self-authenticity) and the humanistic spirituality of inspirational figures inspired the principal’s humanistic approach. In addition, the application of the principal's humanistic approach had adequate impacts on optimizing the implementation of a program for strengthening character education and influenced the strengthening of the student's character. Through the principal's humanistic approach, school becomes an environment for empowering the character of the students.

We address the need for a model by considering two competing theories regarding the origin of life: (i) the Metabolism First theory and (ii) the RNA World theory. We discuss two inter-related points. (I) Models are valuable tools in understanding both the processes and intricacies of the origin of life issues. (II) Insights from models also help us to evaluate the core objection to origin of life theories called “the inefficiency objection” commonly raised by proponents of both the Metabolism First theory and the RNA World theory against each other. We use Simpson’s paradox as a tool for challenging this objection. We will use models in various senses ranging from taking them as representations of reality to treating them as theories/accounts that provide heuristics for probing reality. In this paper, we will frequently use models and theories interchangeably. Additionally, we investigate Conway’s Game of Life and contrast it with our Simpson’s Paradox (SP)-based approach to emergence of life issues. Finally, we discuss some of the consequences of our view. A scientific model is testable in three senses: (i) a logical sense, (ii) a nomological sense, and (iii) a current technological sense. The SP-based model is testable in the logical sense. It is also testable nomologically. However, it is not currently feasible to test it.

Africa was the only continent not to achieve the 2015 Millennium Development Goal of 50% poverty reduction. This paper asks whether Africa will fare better in meeting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) addressing poverty and hunger by 2030. To answer this question we examine literature, including our field research published over the last thirteen years. We find that ‘sustainable development’ is a failed concept immersed in the contemporary global economic system that favors growth over ecosystem stability and patriarchal systems of governance that undervalue women’s capacity for sustainability in their care-work as food providers. We examine barriers to women’s farming (climate change, gender bias, limited access to land, technology, finance) and provide examples of women’s innovative strategies for overcoming these barriers in their care practices toward family and community well-being and ecosystem health. We conclude that sustainability is only possible through transformation of thinking away from approaches that value profit over people and ecosystems and toward gender-based approaches for achieving the goals laid out in the SDGs through holistic, integrative systems of ecosystem fit.

As of 29th June, Sub-Sahara Africa has reported 382,190 cases of COVID-19. Gifted students are usually known as students who have exceptional cognitive and learning abilities. This can be made clear through their learning performance or test scores. However, there are other students who have been identified as gifted and talented, yet have some learning and /or physical disabilities, and these are called twice-exceptional students. Identifying this population of gifted students is usually problematic because their disabilities and difficulties may mask their abilities and vice versa. It has been suggested that twice-exceptional students’ skills and abilities cannot be improved simply by working harder. Instead, these students need teachers to understand their strengths and weaknesses, use teaching strategies that fit their disabilities and serve their needs, and include their parents and educators in their learning process. Thus, this conceptual paper provides an extensive overview of the needs, challenges, and teaching strategies related to twice-exceptional students.

In this paper we analyse spatial variation in Japanese dialectal lexicon by assembling a set of methodologies using theories in variationist linguistics and GIScience, and tools used in historical GIS. Based on historical dialect atlas data, we calculate a linguistic distance matrix across survey localities. The linguistic variation expressed through this distance is contrasted with several measurements, based on spatial distance, utilised to estimate language contact potential across Japan, historically and at present. Further, administrative boundaries are tested for their separation effect. Measuring aggregate association within linguistic variation can contrast previous notions of dialect area formation by detecting continua. Depending on local geographies in spatial subsets, great circle distance, travel distance and travel times explain a similar proportion of the variance in linguistic distance despite the limitations of the latter two. While they explain the majority, two further measurements estimating contact have lower explanatory power: least cost paths modelling contact before the industrial revolution, based on DEM and seafaring, and a linguistic influence index based on settlement hierarchy. Historical domain boundaries and present day prefecture boundaries are found to have a statistically significant effect on dialectal variation. However, the interplay of boundaries and distance is yet to be identified. We claim that a similar methodology can address spatial variation in other digital humanities, given a similar spatial and attribute granularity.

The article addresses the function of (post)colonial nostalgia in a context of multidirectional memory (Rothberg 2009) in contemporary Europe. How can different cultural memories of the Second Word War be put into respectful dialogue with each other? The text is based on a contrapuntal reading (Said 1994) of British and Egyptian popular narratives, using a qualitative content analysis of 10 British tv documentary films about the North Africa Campaign, and data from qualitative interviews collected during ethnographic fieldwork in Alexandria and Cairo, Egypt, during visits 2013--2015. The study highlights considerable differences between the British and Egyptian narratives, but also significant similarities regarding the use and function of nostalgia. In addition, the Egyptian narrative expresses a profound cosmopolitan nostalgia and a longing for what is regarded as Egypt’s lost, modern Golden Age, identified as the decades before the nation’s fundamental change from western-oriented monarchy to Nasser’s Arab nationalist military state. The common elements between the two national narratives indicate a possibly fruitful way to open up for a shared popular memory culture about the war years, including postcolonial aspects.

This article uses a contemporary and revelatory case study to explore the relationship between three conversations in the innovation literature: design thinking, creativity in strategy and, the emerging area of art-thinking. Businesses are increasingly operating in a VUCA environment where they need to design better experiences for their customers and better outcomes for their firm and the Arts are no exception. Innovation, or more correctly growth through innovation, is a top priority for business and although there is no single, unifying blueprint for success at innovation, design thinking is the process that is receiving most attention and getting most traction. Design thinking teaches businesses to think with the creativity and intuition of a designer; to show a deep understanding of; and have empathy with the user. But design thinking has limitations. By placing the consumer at the very heart of the innovation process, design thinking can often lead to more incremental than radical ideas. Now there is a new perspective emerging, art-thinking, in which the objective is not to design a journey from current scenario; A to improved position: B. Art thinking requires the creation of B and spends more time in the open ended, problem space, staking out possibilities and looking for uncontested space. In Dublin, we examine a case of the oldest, largest and most prestigious fine art gallery and studio where most of the country’s best-known and successful visual artists both make, exhibit and sell their art. Graphic Studio Dublin is primarily a printmaking studio, established by artists over 60 years ago. It has facilities for woodblock, lino-print, silkscreen, intaglio and carborundum etching spread over four floors of a centrally located studio where the artists have access 24/7. But two years ago it found itself on the brink of collapse having borrowed heavily to invest in new facilities during the period of Ireland’s economic collapse. Its loans were sold to a vulture-fund who were about to foreclose in a move that would have seen a generation of Irish Artists displaced. A new board of directors was empaneled and they introduced some art thinking principles to bring the organisation back from the brink. They used an art-thinking mindset and design thinking tools to restore the fortunes of this venerable, artist-led institution and it worked.

It is time that universities reexamine what is meant by globalization. Contemporary researchers in science and the humanities (Critchley, Chomsky, Mumford, Ostrom, Eisenstein, Ferry, Orr, Shiva, Klein, Margulis, Meadows, Capra and Tolba, just to name a few) have aptly redefined the concept of « world » as a biological and cultural ecosystem. This paper seeks ways to integrate the theory and practice of eco-citizenship into various cross-disciplinary aspects of higher education, with a focus on curricular adjustments that may be steered by World Languages and Cultures programs. While "global citizenship" is still often understood today as a form of supranational citizenship that may find its actualization through the valuable, yet often arrested efforts of the United Nations, or as the individualistic result of a neoliberal economic emancipation of markets and capital throughout the world, this notion must rather be embedded within a radically cultural, natural and ethical bedrock from which a more potent world citizenry will stem. Departments of World Languages and Cultures and cultures are ideally positioned in the academic landscape to foster the development of a greater eco-civic and biospheric awareness that can permeate new curricular orientations of universities in the US and abroad.

In this article, a critical reflection is made that involves questioning the notion of historic urban landscapes profiled in the Memorandum of Vienna (UNESCO, 2005) and the Paris Recommendation (UNESCO, 2011) as a conceptual paradigm on which to base urban conservation in the 21st century. Its limited methodological development and the assumption of change as an inherent part of the urban condition constitutes the source of many of the problems and difficulties posed by management and protection of contemporary cities, since there is no consensus as to what the acceptable limits of change should be in historic urban landscapes - difficulties that become ever more apparent, given the background of Weberian administrative doctrines present in current governance models. Likewise, the concept of Buffer Zones as a landscape management tool is analyzed, with the aim of establishing new methodological proposals that enable spatial organization to be regulated by defining areas of harmonization that are made up of flexible and multifunctional spaces for cooperation where territorial scale comes into contact with modernization of the historical fabric.

The influence of the cult television series Twin Peaks (1990-91) can be detected in a wide range of videogames, from adventure, to roleplaying to survival horror titles. While many games variously draw upon the narrative, setting and imagery of the series for inspiration, certain element of the distinctive uncanniness of Twin Peaks are difficult to translate into gameplay, particularly its ability consistently disrupt the expectations and emotional responses of its audience. This paper examines the ways in which the 2010 survival horror title Deadly Premonition attempts to replicate the uncanniness of Twin Peaks in both its narrative and gameplay, noting how it expands upon conceptualisations of the gamerly uncanny (Hoeger and Huber 2007). It contends that Deadly Premonition's awkward and uncanny recombination of seemingly inconsistent and excessive gameplay features mirrors the ways in which David Lynch and Mark Frost draw upon and subvert audience expectations for police procedurals and soap operas in the original Twin Peaks, while also providing a similarly disorienting excess of “realistic” detail. Furthermore its exploration of the theme of possession – a central element of the television series – offers a diegetic exploration of the uncanny relationship between the player and their onscreen avatar.

In The Work of the Dead: A Cultural History of Mortal Remains, Thomas Laqueur argues that the work of the dead is carried out through the living and through those who remember, honour, and mourn the dead. Further, he maintains that the brutal or careless disposal of the corpse “is an attack of extreme violence”. To treat the dead body as if it does not matter or as if it were ordinary organic matter would be to deny its humanity. From Laqueur’s point of view it is inferred that the dead are believed to have rights and dignities that are upheld through rituals, practices, and beliefs of the living. Drawing on dark tourism scholarship and cultural memory theory, this paper examines the display of human bones at Sedlec Ossuary, Czech Republic and the tourist culture that has built up around the site. Primarily, my writing calls into question the commoditization of burial places as a conceivable violation of the human rights of the dead. My research is driven by a number of questions: What is it that draws tourists to burial grounds and how do heritage sites negotiate visitor experiences? What are the ethical boundaries when a final resting place with bodies on display is also marketed as a tourist site? Do the dead have human rights and how are the living responsible for preserving those rights?

Australian regional areas are now receiving significant numbers of migrants from the African continent. Predominantly Anglo-Saxon communities perceive these ‘newcomers’ as physically and culturally different. Asking, however, how African migrants themselves construct relationships with local communities and build a sense of belonging in regional and rural areas is a very different question. This paper explores South Sudanese migrants’experiences conceptualising their sense of belonging in a small county town: Castlemaine, Victoria. Focus group discussions show that even with the welcoming atmosphere and support from the local community, South Sudanese migrants are still attracted to metropolitan environments that have greater diversity, feeling more at home in such settings. Using the theoretical background of a stranger, this paper argues the cities allow strangers be un-noticed letting them feel at ‘home’. Findings from the study show settings with greater diversity encourage negotiating difference openly and easing power imbalances among different groups.Finally, the locality of Castlemaine, within easy commuting distance to metropolitan Melbourne and suburbs, is considered in relation to hypermobility reducing the capacity to construct ‘bridging capital’ within such local communities.

In resettlement planning literature, much has been written on economic, land valuation and compensation, infrastructure and services aspects of the land. Psychological risks and stresses of resettled communities, however, have been under-researched. The current research looks at the psychological risks of resettlers in a Development-Induced Displacement and Resettlement (DIDR) project in Sri Lanka. Focusing on the stages of resettlement planning process discussed by Scudder and Colson four-stage model (1980) and the psychological risks discussed by Cernea’s (1990) impoverishment risks and reconstruction (IRR) model. This study evaluates the significant level of the psychological risks faced by the communities in DIDR projects in Sri Lanka relating to before and after resettlement. Moragahakanda Resettlement Project (MRP) was selected as the case study which is located in Naula DS division of Matale District, Central Province, Sri Lanka. A questionnaire survey, documents and field observations were used to evaluate the current psychological risks. The responses received from multiple choice questions were analyzed by Significant Point (SP) index. The research findings point that there are no conspicuous changes of psychological risks related to before/after resettlement has occurred in re-settlers. The findings highlight that the psychological risk levels in transition stage have remained the same level in the potential development stage. This research provides a systematic guidance enabling the physical planners to prioritize the most significant psychological risks which should be considered in the decision-making process of DIDR projects.

Arabic was the language of philosophy, logic, Islamic sciences and rhetorical linguistic sciences. It was used in the writing of all sciences generally and became the language of world culture. Although the other languages of the Islamic world had a little share, but all peoples of Islamic countries; Arabs and non-Arabs, Muslims and non-Muslims attributed to that movement appreciated. Hence, Arab sciences flourished in their bright ages. Arabic language was a cultural container of the ancient Greek and Latin intellectual heritage. As the ancient Greek and Latin sciences and literatures were translated into Arabic in the bright ages of Islam. Arab language was a strong bond for them, as a common human heritage for the centuries to save it from being lost, as Muslims used it to develop their sciences and arts, as Muslims in the East used the Western sciences and literatures in the modern age, because they are not Eastern or Western, but the common efforts of all humanity. Arabic language opened for the dictionaries ​​and other tongues of cross-fertilization, civil friction and simulation. Arabic had become the language of sciences: mathematics, astronomy, engineering, logic, philosophy, mysticism, agriculture, industry and economics by the continuous efforts of scientists in their scientific research, invention, experimentation, knowledge collection and classification in various fields, where orientalists recognized the Arab leadership. That scientific and literary civilization moved to Europe through Italy, Andalusia, Crusades and the Ottoman Caliphate. Europeans learned Arabic language, literature and sciences in the centers of Toledo, Fez and cities of Maghreb.

This Special Issue of Humanities comes at a time when the viability of the humanities are challenged on numerous fronts. On the one hand, the humanities face material threats as the politics of austerity continues throughout Europe and the United States, diminishing public support and making profit margin and “job creation” the primary measure of value or the basis of state university funding decisions. On the other, the humanities face conceptual, theoretical and ethical challenges, as the emergence of post-racial and post-humanist discourses signal what Foucault called “a change in the fundamental arrangements of knowledge.” The defining boundaries of constructs such as “race” and “human” have been radically called into question, challenging us to rethink the classificatory systems that found hierarchical relationships between, for example, the “fully human” and sub-human or non-human others. Despite dominant nations’ professed commitment to a universal human rights paradigm, racialized identities are still often the targets of disenfranchisement and dehumanization, while the exploitation and destruction of the natural world continues in the name of “progress” and profits.

The African society is one of the societies with rich culture and traditions. Apart from the indigenous religion of Africa, Christianity and Islam are worshiped as the major religions of the African society. Literature reflects a great amount of influence of religions on the existing societies, people and cultures. African literature often mirrors the clash of indigenous religion with Christianity. In the writings of African authors one can find the elements of Christian beliefs and practices. The present paper, however, is focused on the African woman novelist Buchi Emecheta’s selected four novels: Second-Class Citizen (1974), The Bride Price (1976), The Slave-Girl (1977) and The Joys of Motherhood (1979). The paper attempts to discuss the impact of Christianity on the social and cultural aspects of the African society with special focus on African women. The findings reveal the positive as well as negative impacts of the new religion on African people and on the position of African women through the characters present in the selected novels. With the medium of writing and through Christianity, Emecheta seek to educate her society and improve upon the position of the African women.
