The present study provided a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on the Urban Metaverse, focusing on its integration into urban planning and design, as well as the ethical, social, and economic implications in urban settings. This study aims to evaluate the present standing and scope of the metaverse in the context of urban planning and city design; investigate the obstacles and remedies in integrating metaverse components into urban spaces; and explore the ethical, social, and economic ramifications of the metaverse in urban settings. The methodology involved a qualitative investigation of the relevant literature using academic databases and a review of thirty-two selected studies published between 2022 and 2024. The findings emphasise the changing nature of interpersonal relationships, potential alienation from physical spaces, and ethical implications of technology-driven urban changes. The study also highlights the potential opportunities and challenges associated with incorporating the metaverse into urban environments and offers strategies to address these challenges, including the formulation of data protection regulations, expansion of infrastructure, and ensuring equal access for all residents. The implications of the findings underscore the necessity of regulatory frameworks, technological investments, ethical considerations, and inclusive governance structures to ensure inclusive and sustainable urban development in the emerging era of the metaverse.

Since 1974, when Heinz von Foerster made the distinction between “the cybernetics of observed systems” as first-order cybernetics (1oC) and “the cybernetics of observing systems” as second-order cybernetics (2oC), cybernetics has been dominated by this observer-centric paradigm that he claimed cannot be extended meaningfully to a third-order. Rather than attempting to extend his paradigm, we derive an alternative, model-centric paradigm from first principles of regulation that naturally extends to three orders, where the third order is ethical regulation. We thus consider a type of regulator that requires a third model and a third observer: If the third model is a model of acceptable (ethical) situations, then a third observer is a necessary element of the system’s “conscience” that prevents or detects any violations of the model of ethical situations. In this paradigm, the cybernetics of systems that are designed to exhibit ethical behaviour can be characterized as third-order cybernetics (3oC). By being able to extend the paradigm to include ethical systems, the model-centric paradigm brings clarity and utility that is not possible using the philosopher-friendly observer-centric paradigm and its under-specified (abstract) observers. Finally new definitions for cybernetics are proposed that clearly differentiate between the science and the philosophy, of cybernetics.

Burnout is a factor that affects organizational performance. Researchers agree that the emotional stability provided by an ethical climate and adequate work autonomy often has a buffering effect on chronic stress. However, despite the abundant literature analyzing the relationship between work autonomy and burnout, whether work autonomy acts as a stress-reducing resource or a stress-increasing demand is not sufficiently well established. It is also unknown to what extent work autonomy contributes to explaining the relationship between ethical climate and burnout. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to examine the relationship between an ethical climate of principles and norms on burnout, using the moderating effect of work autonomy. A multivariate moderation analysis was used to address the issue. The sample consists of 448 employees in the Colombian electric sector. The results show that an ethical climate of principles and work autonomy relate positively to burnout. However, when a rule-demanding work environment is related to a high perception of work autonomy, the relationship with burnout syndrome changes from positive to negative. In conclusion, when employees have significant control over their usual tasks, they develop a behavior pattern that includes both the organization's internal standards and the principles that shape individual morale. In this case, employees are able to balance the workload with the high psychological demands of an ethical climate of principles, without it representing a disturbance to their emotional well-being.

Virtual assistants (VAs) have gained widespread popularity across a wide range of applications, and the integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT has opened up new possibilities for developing even more sophisticated VAs. However, this integration poses new ethical issues and challenges that must be carefully considered, particularly as these systems are increasingly used in public services: transfer of personal data, decision-making transparency, potential biases, and privacy risks. This paper, an extension of the work presented at IberSPEECH 2022, analyzes the current regulatory framework for AI-based VAs in Europe and delves into ethical issues in depth, examining potential benefits and drawbacks of integrating LLMs with VAs. Based on the analysis, this paper argues that the development and use of VAs powered by LLMs should be guided by a set of ethical principles that prioritize transparency, fairness, and harm prevention. The paper presents specific guidelines for the ethical use and development of this technology, including recommendations for data privacy, bias mitigation, and user control. By implementing these guidelines, the potential benefits of VAs powered by LLMs can be fully realized while minimizing the risks of harm and ensuring that ethical considerations are at the forefront of the development process.

Many ethical issues arise when robots are introduced into elder-care settings. When ethically charged situations occur, robots ought to be able to handle them appropriately. Some experimental approaches use (top-down) moral generalist approaches, like Deontology and Utilitarianism, to implement ethical decision-making. Others have advocated the use of bottom-up approaches, such as learning algorithms, to learn ethical patterns from human behaviour. Both approaches have their shortcomings when it comes to real-world implementations. Human beings have been observed to use a hybrid form of ethical reasoning called Pro-Social Rule Bending, where top-down rules and constraints broadly apply, but in particular situations, certain rules are temporarily bent. This paper reports on implementing such a hybrid ethical reasoning approach in elder-care robots. We show through simulation studies that it leads to better upholding of human values such as autonomy, whilst not sacrificing beneficence.

In the current era of emerging technologies and cutting-edge inventions, it is equally important to consider the ethical aspects of research and innovations to have an ethical space for the sustainable progress and safety of humanity. The field of nanotechnology research and innovation often faces criticism due to its potential adverse impacts on health, the environment, limited accessibility, high costs, and concerns about data privacy. Therefore, it is crucial to address and resolve these ethical issues systematically. In this regard, we present our findings and methods for exploring the application of the ethics technology assessment method by considering its relevance at different stages of innovation development. Specifically, the present work provides a conceptual framework for ethics technology assessment focused on evaluating a significant innovation in nanotechnology within the domain of food safety with specific reference to mycotoxin remediation. By leveraging the value-sensitive design approach, we described various strategies for analyzing the ethical implications of nanotechnology-based innovations in mycotoxin remediation. Through comprehensive ethics technology assessment, nanotechnology-based innovations can be guided toward becoming more value-oriented, thereby making substantial contributions to social progress.

Italy is the leading European producer of rice. The transition to organic farming could represent a solution for environmental protection, as well as for the economic sustainability of farms, consumer safety and as a measure of climate mitigation, but it currently displays several weaknesses in the control and certification system. The objective of the current study is to propose advice for improving the control and certification scheme in the organic rice sector. To achieve this aim, we adopted a qualitative methodology based on participant observation at stakeholders’ meetings, focus groups, community-led workshops and deep interviews with relevant local actors. Findings show that there are some solutions to mitigate the weakness of the Italian certification scheme. The study also produces managerial implications to improve the Italian organic rice system.

Building an ethical culture is challenging and a basic requirement of the companies to embed transparency in their systems, creating a positive image; serving the internal and external communities. This paper based on detailed interviews of 12 family owned businesses over a period of 16 months explores how these companies build the ethical culture, identifying the ethical culture sustainability triggers, challenges and role of religion in such practices. The values, culture, community and social norms are identified as major ingredients of a sustainable ethical culture development and implementation of the ethical policies and procedures require institutional and structural mechanisms for effectiveness in family owned businesses. The findings at numerous occasions are in contrast to the literature, whereas, in other instances are similar. The religion, society, family image, the entrepreneurs themselves and their family members play a vital role. Non-interference in private matters of the employees, whistle blowing, code of ethics, training and awareness creation and a number of other factors play a leading role in ethical culture development in family businesses.

Business school curriculums are designed to improve business skills and a student’s eventual workplace performance. In addition to these business skill sets the emerging business environment demands softer skills associated with ethical decision-making and sustainable business practices. Understanding the key influencers of ethical orientation and attitudes towards the environment is the first critical step for curriculum planning designed to develop both ethical decision-making and environmental sensibilities of students in business schools. Using a bivariate regression analysis (OLS) that compared the established New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scale and the newly introduced Ethical Orientation Scale (EOS), this study assesses environmental eco-consciousness and ethical orientation over time and across varying socio-demographic variables. The study shows first, that in addition to socio-cultural variables, situational factors influence ethical decision-making. Secondly, it illuminates that ethical orientations as measured by the EOS predicts beliefs about the environment as measured by the NEP scale. It further provides evidence of the ethical underpinnings of the New Ecological Paradigm as well as provides initial validation for the new EOS. These outcomes provide additional levers to assist business educators in the creation of high impact teaching strategies to measure and encourage ethical decision-making and sustainable business practices that protect the environment.

Background: The potential of Artificial intelligent (AI) models to process and interpret large health datasets at scale could revolutionize public health and epidemiology, providing a foundation for public health. Ethics has been recognized as a priority concern in the development and deployment of AI. Because AI technology can jeopardize patient safety, privacy, and posing a new set of ethical problems that must be addressed. Objectives: We aim to provide a holistic view on what are the different ethical and legal principles that was addressed in the included studies regarding the use of AI in public health and what are the ethical challenges that can arise.Methods: Following PRISMA guideline, five bibliographic databases were used in our search: PubMed, Scopus, JSTOR, IEEE Xplore, and Google Scholar from 2015 to February 2022. Four reviewers carried out study selection and data extraction, and the data extracted was synthesized by a narrative approach. Results: This review included 23 unique publications out of a total of 1123 items that were initially identified. Different ethical principles regarding the uses of AI in public health and community health were identified and discussed distinctly in the current review. The common ethical and legal themes that this review focused on are equity, bias, privacy and security, safety, transparency, confidentiality, accountability, social justice, and autonomy. In addition, five ethical challenges were mentioned. Conclusion: Research regarding ethical and legal principles and challenges about using AI in public health specifically consider a new filed, because all previous themes are concerning the physical and patients’ area where it focuses only on the clinical settings.

This paper presents a study on the development of the cross-curricular learning outcome (CCLO) "Ethical, environmental and professional responsibility" by the students of different Bache-lor’sDegrees taught at Universitat Politècnica de València. The work and development of this learning outcome entails great complexity, given the double dimension of responsibility that it involves. At the end of their training at the university, students are expected to show ethical, en-vironmental, and professional responsibility towards themselves and others. Interviews have been conducted with lecturers who work and assess this outcome in their subjects, most/all of them related to science and engineering. The objective was to identify the learning approach used at the different subjects to guarantee the acquisition of this CCLO by the students. A focus group has also been carried out with students to determine the importance they give to this learning outcome, and to know their degree of satisfaction with the training received. The methodology used to obtain the data from lecturers and students and to process the information to get a precise diagnosis is fully described in the paper. Results are satisfactory to some extent: most of the lecturers carry out appropriate activities and most of students achieve the expected proficiency level. Finally, recommendations are given to improve the development of this cross-curricular learning outcome.

This study explores the elements that influence consumer vegetarian diet choices in parts of South Korean provinces. The study examines these explanatory variables: ethical-animal-welfare, health, environment, social issues , mood-emotion, and religious-beliefs with vegetarianism serving as the dependent variable. The Likert scale data from 264 respondents were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. Results show that health, ethical-animal-welfare ideals as well as environmental concerns emerge as significant variables influencing the decision to embrace a vegetarian diet. This shows that consumers (international students) in Korea are becoming more aware of and concerned about health, ethical and sustainable dietary choices. Secondly, health plays a crucial role in the vegetarian diet selection, indicating that health-conscious people are more inclined to choose a vegetarian lifestyle. Religious belief and mood have various degrees of influence on the vegetarian diet decision. The findings of this study have consequences for consumer behavior, marketing managers, and decision-makers. Businesses in the food industry, in particular, can gain from catering to the needs and tastes of consumers that prioritize ethical-animal welfare ideals, as well as those that value health and environmental sustainability. Creating and advertising vegetarian and vegan choices in local restaurants can effectively attract and serve this specific target demographic.

The escalating antibiotic crisis in Nigeria presents a critical challenge, violating fundamental human rights and ethical obligations. Skyrocketing antibiotic costs severely restrict access to essential medications, particularly for vulnerable populations. This crisis not only exacerbates health disparities but also fuels the emergence of antibiotic resistance, posing grave public health risks. Rooted in regulatory gaps, lack of transparency in drug pricing, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure, the crisis demands a comprehensive, collaborative response. Policy interventions targeting antibiotic affordability, regulatory reforms, and healthcare infrastructure investments are imperative. Upholding ethical standards and accountability mechanisms is essential to ensuring equitable access to antibiotics and safeguarding public health in Nigeria.

The risk factors and positive factors of teleworking have been widely analyzed. Emotional exhaustion has been one of the most studied among them. However, the impact of ethical leadership in virtual environments has remained completely unnoticed. There is no clear answer to whether the ethical leader is a factor that buffers or accelerates stress-related processes in teleworking. Furthermore, the role of perceived work autonomy as a theoretical mechanism that protects against specific adverse psychological outcomes requires more scientific evidence because the results obtained so far are confusing and contradictory. Therefore, this study explores how and when ethical leadership influences emotional exhaustion through work autonomy and teleworking intensity (TI). The sample consisted of 448 professionals from six organizations in the Colombian electricity sector. The mediation effect was evaluated through a four-step procedure, and the moderated mediation model was analyzed using statistical tools such as PROCESS and AMOS macros for SPSS. Surprisingly, our results revealed a positive relationship between ethical leadership and emotional exhaustion, with work autonomy potentially mediating this relationship. However, teleworking intensity (TI) was found to moderate this mediation process. Specifically, the negative impact of ethical leadership on emotional exhaustion was nullified when TI was high. Moreover, a high level of TI strengthened the relationship between ethical leadership and work autonomy, while weakening the positive relationship between work autonomy and emotional exhaustion. In conclusion, our study suggests a potential positive relationship between ethical leadership and emotional exhaustion from the follower's perspective. However, the number of teleworking days can influence this trend, potentially even reversing it. In other words, teleworking intensity (TI) is a resource as its intensity increases, and it can alter the direction of work autonomy and reconfigure the relationship between ethical leadership and emotional exhaustion. This study, to the best of our knowledge, is the first to analyze these variables, significantly contributing to our understanding of the attributes of ethical leadership and its impact on employee well-being.

This qualitative study explores the influence of ethical supply chain practices on brand equity from the perspective of consumers. In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 participants to examine their attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors towards brands that emphasize ethical considerations in their supply chain operations. Thematic analysis revealed several key findings. Transparency and authenticity emerged as critical factors influencing consumer trust and perceptions of brand integrity. Participants valued brands that communicated clearly and honestly about their ethical sourcing practices, viewing transparency as indicative of reliability and ethical commitment. Ethical considerations significantly influenced consumer purchase decisions, with participants emphasizing the importance of factors such as fair labor practices, environmental sustainability, and responsible sourcing in shaping their perceptions of product quality and brand value. Brands that integrated these ethical principles into their supply chain management were perceived as offering higher-quality products, which enhanced consumer willingness to pay a premium and bolstered brand reputation. The study also highlighted varying levels of consumer awareness and engagement with ethical supply chain practices, underscoring the importance of effective communication and consumer education. Ethical supply chain practices were found to foster brand loyalty and trust, with brands perceived as ethical and socially responsible enjoying stronger consumer relationships and loyalty. Overall, the findings suggest that ethical supply chain practices play a crucial role in enhancing brand equity by aligning business operations with consumer values and expectations. The study contributes to existing literature by providing empirical insights into the mechanisms through which ethical considerations influence consumer perceptions and behaviors towards brands.

Multicomponent training is recommended for people with dementia living in long-term care homes. Nevertheless, evidence is limited and people with severe dementia are often excluded from trials. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate (1) the feasibility and (2) the requirements regarding a multicomponent training for people with moderate to severe dementia. The study was conducted as an uncontrolled single arm pilot study with a mixed methods approach. 15 nursing home residents with a mean age of 82 years (range: 75-90 years; female: 64%) with moderate to severe dementia received 16 weeks of multicomponent training. Feasibility and requirements of the training were assessed by a standardized observation protocol. Eleven participants regularly attended the intervention. The highest active participation was observed during gait exercises (64%), the lowest during strength exercises (33%). It was supportive if exercises were task-specific or related to everyday life. This study confirms that a multicomponent training for the target group is (1) feasible and well accepted. To enhance active participation (2) individual instructions and the implementation of exercises related to everyday life is required. The effectiveness of the adapted training should be tested in future randomized controlled trials.

The utilization of artificial intelligence in education can contribute to sustainable development goals in various ways. AI in education can effectively convey sustainability issues to students. Through simulations and virtual environments, learners can experience sustainable practices firsthand. On the other hand artificial intelligence can assist administrators and educators in making data-informed decisions. This allows for more effective shaping of educational policies. This study explores how teachers and artificial intelligence (AI) address ethical dilemmas in edu-cation, comparing their decisions and examining the influence of variables such as gender, years of service, and education level. A total of 141 teachers from public schools in Turkey participated, and their responses were compared to AI-generated decisions using Yin's nested multiple-case de-sign. The scenarios were analyzed through five ethical frameworks: virtue ethics, deontological ethics, utilitarianism, social justice ethics, and situation ethics. Results showed that AI provided the same answer as the majority of teachers in six out of eight dilemmas but differed in two. AI favored a more analytical, result-oriented approach, while teachers emphasized empathy and rule adherence. Gender differences revealed that males leaned towards utilitarianism, while females favored social justice and situation ethics. Less experienced teachers preferred deontological and social justice ethics, while more experienced teachers leaned towards virtue ethics and utilitarian-ism. Elementary teachers emphasized virtue and social justice ethics, while middle and high school teachers favored deontological ethics and utilitarianism. The findings provide insights into ethical decision-making in education by highlighting the differences between solutions proposed by artificial intelligence and those offered by teachers. Additionally, they emphasize the im-portance of adapting artificial intelligence to everyday life to foster a sustainable world.

Purpose: The impact of ethical leadership on employee emotional exhaustion has been widely analyzed. However, the effect of the leader's moral intensity on the employee's emotional state has gone unnoticed. This research seeks to show that ethical management by the leader affects employees' emotional exhaustion in accordance with the scope of the leader's moral standards. Their relationship is not necessarily linear but adopts a curvilinear pattern as a function of the leader's ethical intensity, and affective commitment acts as a mediating mechanism. Methods: A simple mediation model is used. The sample consists of 448 professionals in six organizations in the Colombian electrical sector who responded to an online questionnaire. The sampling is probabilistic by conglomerates. Findings: This research revealed that ethical behavior is voluntary in nature and develops in an environment of trust. When the ethical leader surpasses specific moral turning points, the follower's learning becomes an obligation, preventing affective fluidity. A search for acceptance implies constant consumption of resources that weakens the follower's capacity for self-regulation until it is exhausted. Furthermore, when the leader's expectations are difficult to achieve, affective commitment causes emotional ambiguity in followers, intensifying the stress associated with their role and increasing the likelihood of burnout. Originality: This research challenges conventional wisdom about the positive, linear effect of ethical leadership on employees' emotional state. It broadens the understanding of this management style and fills a crucial knowledge gap by introducing a new perspective. Practical Implications: A horizontal, balanced, and accessible leader can quickly convey a convincing ethical discourse. Emphasizing the vulnerability and importance of human beings can help prevent moral anguish and ethical distances. This, in turn, provides followers with resources to mitigate exhaustion and strengthen commitment.

Consumer trust in supply chain certifications plays a pivotal role in shaping contemporary consumer behavior and marketing effectiveness. This qualitative research investigates consumer perceptions of supply chain certifications and their impact on purchasing decisions and brand loyalty. Through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with 30 participants, the study explores themes such as credibility, transparency, perceived value, and the influence of certifications on consumer trust. Findings reveal that consumers value certifications that signal ethical sourcing practices and sustainability commitments, viewing them as assurances of product quality and social responsibility. Credibility and transparency in certification processes emerged as critical factors influencing consumer trust, while perceived benefits such as environmental sustainability and fair labor practices positively influenced purchase intentions. Moreover, certifications were found to enhance brand loyalty by aligning with consumers' ethical values and beliefs. However, the study identifies challenges including high certification costs, complexity in compliance, and consumer skepticism, which hinder broader adoption and effectiveness of certifications. The implications of these findings suggest that businesses can enhance consumer trust and market competitiveness by investing in rigorous certification standards, clear communication strategies, and sustainable practices. Addressing barriers through improved transparency and consumer education is crucial for maximizing the impact of certifications on ethical consumption. Future research directions include longitudinal studies on certification impacts and comparative analyses across industries and global markets to further enrich understanding of consumer behavior and certification influences.

Challenges such as greenwashing and perceived discrepancies between brand promises and actions underscore the importance of authentic communication in aligning consumer perceptions with brand behaviors. The COVID-19 pandemic further emphasized the role of ethical supply chains in ensuring business resilience and consumer trust during global disruptions. Brands that exhibited ethical leadership during the crisis reinforced their reputational capital and strengthened relationships with ethically conscious consumers. This study contributes to understanding the strategic imperative for businesses to integrate and communicate ethical supply chain practices effectively, thereby fostering sustainable competitive advantages and enhancing long-term brand loyalty. The COVID-19 pandemic further emphasized the role of ethical supply chains in ensuring business resilience and consumer trust during global disruptions. Brands that exhibited ethical leadership during the crisis reinforced their reputational capital and strengthened relationships with ethically conscious consumers. This study contributes to understanding the strategic imperative for businesses to integrate and communicate ethical supply chain practices effectively, thereby fostering sustainable competitive advantages and enhancing long-term brand loyalty. Future research directions include exploring evolving consumer expectations, emerging ethical challenges, and innovative strategies for embedding ethicality into supply chain management.

The early Church had an incredible encounter with the resurrected Christ. Being living witnesses, Christ’s followers spread the Gospel in the world through the power of the Holy Spirit. This piece argued that the Bible contains methodologies used by the Apostles who laid down their lives for the sake of the message of the Cross. Furthermore, it has been contested in this study that the emphasis today has shifted to personal theological agendas of reading the Bible for intellectual preferences. As a result of Christianity’s current emphasis on dogmatic beliefs, various unbiblical approaches to reading the Bible have emerged that ignore the ethical reading of the Bible. This study has reinvestigated the reasons to apply this approach in our modern era to live the Bible rather than any other approach. And one among them is the Enlightenment era which distorted the relationship between ethics and theology (Perry 46). Apart from the above, this study also revealed that many Bible believers have twisted biblical truths because they focus on their convictions. As a result, many strategies fail to provide sound biblical teachings to understand any particular event in the light of the original message of the Bible to reflect upon our situation today. Therefore, in light of the above, on the one hand, the approach of the early Church Fathers is used to reimagine contemporary challenges from this perspective. On the other hand, even though thousands of books have been written on various methodologies to study the Bible, the core concern to critique these current approaches is not personal or denominational, religion-based but rather 'invitational and servational' to live with these biblical beliefs to reorient an ethical approach towards cross-cultural reading in our local and global contexts addressing the problems (injustice and marginalization) and responding to the contemporary challenges.

Malaria remains a primary public health challenge in Africa, and there is growing interest in leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to raise malaria interventions. This research examines the possible influence, challenges, and recommendations for implementing AI-based personalized malaria interventions in Africa. AI offers several opportunities in malaria management, including early detection and prediction of outbreaks, improved diagnosis, personalized interventions, optimal treatment recommendations, surveillance and response, resource optimization, and research innovation. However, the implementation of AI in malaria interventions faces various challenges. These include data availability and quality, infrastructure and resource constraints, contextual relevance and generalizability, ethical and privacy considerations, integration into healthcare workflows, and the need to build trust and acceptance among stakeholders. To address these challenges, it is recommended to strengthen data infrastructure, build local capacity in AI technologies, contextualize AI models to local settings, address ethical considerations, establish monitoring and evaluation frameworks, promote collaboration and knowledge sharing, and secure sustainable funding and long-term commitment. By considering these recommendations, stakeholders can work towards implementing AI-based personalized malaria interventions in Africa that can contribute to improving malaria control outcomes, reducing the weight of the disease, and advancing public health in the region.

Geoscientists developed geoethics, an intra-disciplinary field of applied philosophical studies, during the last decade. Reaching beyond the sphere of professional geosciences, it led to professional, cultural, and philosophical approaches to handle the social-ecological structures of our planet ‘wherever human activities interact with the Earth system’. Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 and considering geoscientists’ experiences dealing with disasters (related to hazards like tsunamis, floods, climate changes.), this essay (1) explores the geoethical approach, (2) re-casts geoethics within western philosophical systems, such as the Kantian imperatives, Kohlberg scale of moral adequacy, Jonas’ imperative of responsibility, and (3) advances a ‘geoethical thesis’. The latter takes the form of a hypothesis of a much broader scope of geoethics than initially envisioned. That hypothesis appears by suspecting a relationship between the relative successes in the COVID-19 battle with the positioning of agents (individual, collective, institutional) into ethical frameworks. The turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, calls for the transfer of experiences between different disciplinary domains to further sustainable governance, hence generalising the geoethical approach. It is emphasized that only when behaving as responsible and knowledgeable citizens, then people of any trade (including [geo-]scientists) can transgress the boundaries of ordinary governance practices with legitimacy.

This study explores the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on financial inclusion satisfaction and recommendation, focusing on ethical dimensions and perceived algorithmic fairness. From the perspectives of organizational justice theory and the heuristic-systematic model, we examine how constructs of algorithm transparency, algorithm accountability, and algorithm legitimacy influence users' perceptions of fairness, and subsequently, their satisfaction with and recommendation of AI-driven financial inclusion. Through a survey-based quantitative analysis, our results indicate that perceived algorithmic fairness acts as a mediating factor between the ethical attributes of AI systems and user satisfaction as well as their recommendation. Findings reveal that higher levels of transparency, accountability, and legitimacy enhance customers' perceptions of fairness, which in turn significantly increases both their satisfaction with financial inclusion services facilitated by AI and their likelihood to recommend them. This research not only contributes to the literature on AI ethics by highlighting the critical role of transparent, accountable, and legitimate AI practices in fostering satisfaction and recommendation among users, but also fills a significant gap in understanding the ethical implications of AI in financial inclusion contexts.

This study investigates the pivotal role of leadership in driving sustainable supply chain initiatives (SSCI), highlighting the multifaceted ways through which leaders influence the successful integration and implementation of sustainability practices within supply chains. Using a qualitative approach, the research involved semi-structured interviews with leaders and managers from diverse industries, complemented by document analysis and thematic analysis to capture the complexities of leadership in SSCI. The findings reveal that visionary leadership, characterized by a clear and compelling sustainability vision, plays a crucial role in aligning organizational goals with sustainable practices, inspiring collective action, and fostering a shared commitment to long-term environmental and social objectives. Stakeholder engagement emerged as a critical factor, with leaders who prioritize open communication and collaboration successfully building trust, leveraging expertise, and co-creating innovative solutions to sustainability challenges. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of fostering a culture of innovation, where leaders support experimentation, risk-taking, and the adoption of new technologies and processes that enhance sustainability. Ethical leadership, emphasizing integrity, transparency, and accountability, is identified as essential for gaining stakeholder support and reinforcing the legitimacy of SSCI. Furthermore, the integration of sustainability into organizational culture, driven by leadership, is crucial for aligning individual and organizational behaviors with sustainability goals. The ability of leaders to navigate challenges, adapt to global supply chain complexities, and utilize robust sustainability metrics is also emphasized as key to sustaining SSCI. The study concludes that effective leadership is integral to the success of SSCI, offering valuable insights for organizations aiming to enhance their sustainability performance and contributing to the broader understanding of leadership’s role in sustainable supply chain management.

The study addresses improving disaster management performance using artificial intelligence to achieve sustainable development and support the global economy and proposes implementable strategies to achieve resilience and growth. Through a literature review, it examines the impact of natural disasters on international trade and focuses on the challenges faced by developing economies in developing countries. The study emphasizes the interconnectedness of global trade networks and the need for proactive risk management. Existing qualitative literature from previous studies was compiled and analyzed for the study. The results indicate potential disruptions in commercial activities and economic growth in Middle Eastern countries due to natural or human-caused disasters such as wars and terrorism. Here we find the importance of measures to build resilience and diversify trading partners and markets. Recommendations include investing in resilient infrastructure, promoting digital trade, strengthening institutional capacities, and enhancing regional and international cooperation. By providing insights to policy makers, businesses and stakeholders, this study contributes to understanding the resilience of developing economies to natural disasters and provides practical guidance for them to overcome the challenges posed by such disasters and achieve sustainable growth.

This study investigates the relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) dimensions and employees' satisfaction and retention for sustainability in banks. Carroll (1991) proposed a theoretical approach that consists of four components (economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic) to analyze CSR activities and their effects on employee’s satisfaction and retention in the company. Simple random sampling was used to get the information from 221 participants. The entire form of the dataset is utilized to execute regression and correlation analysis using SPSS. In order to find out the relationship between economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic factors and employee's satisfaction and retention, regression beta coefficient and correlation coefficients were used to analyze. This study also examines the relationship between job satisfaction and intentions to retain with an organization. The findings demonstrate that the CSR aspects of ethical and philanthropic have a considerable and favorable influence on employee's satisfaction. The outcome also demonstrates a good and prominent influence of legal CSR on the satisfaction of employee's to retain with the firm. Moreover, this study demonstrates that economic aspect of CSR has no significant impact on employee's retention and satisfaction. Correlation analysis depicts that economic CSR is positively and significantly connected with employee's retention and satisfaction. This research came to the conclusion that enhancing employees view regarding CSR activities such as economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic will increase employee's satisfaction. Therefore, executives and managers in the banks should take steps to influence how employees see CSR areas in order to raise employee's satisfaction and retention in the banks for sustainability.

As ethically motivated vegans (EMV) frequently feel responsible for suffering caused by the consumption of animal products, feelings of guilt are therefore an important issue for many of them. To date, studies on the experience and handling of guilt in vegans have rarely been identified. Therefore, we investigated this topic using a qualitative design. N=64 interviews with N=57 EMV were analyzed using content analysis. Key results are that they perceive guilt as a psychological and sometimes even as a physical influencing factor. They describe how feelings of guilt arise in combination with anger, revulsion and pity thereby affecting their thinking and behavior. Some experience even corporal strain, a physical heaviness. Others helped the transition to a vegan diet to get rid of guilt and to feel emotional and partially also physical relieve. In contrast, others were faced with new problems: no dissociation from other people’s guilt, heightened awareness of one’s own perception, more compassion, and a stronger sense of responsibility. Some even registered an increased tendency to depression and self-destructive thoughts. Beyond its limitations, our study is one of the first illustrating the possible impact of feelings of guilt on mental and physical well-being EMV may sense and suffer from.

Using a variety of theoretical foundations, this paper examines the association between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and employees’ knowledge-sharing behavior, investigating the sequential mediation role of perceived organizational support and organizational commitment as well as the moderating role of ethical climate. Hypotheses were formulated to address both the sequential mediation effect of perceived organizational support and organizational commitment on the link between CSR and knowledge-sharing and the moderation effect of ethical climate on the relationship between CSR and perceived organizational support. In order to mitigate the problems of potential common method bias, data were gathered from a sample of 204 South Korean employees at three distinct time points. The results of the study offer compelling evidence that CSR activities exert a positive influence on employees’ knowledge-sharing behavior, an effect that is sequentially mediated by both perceived organizational support and organizational commitment. Furthermore, the research uncovers the positive moderating role played by ethical climate in the relationship between CSR and perceived organizational support. By integrating multiple theoretical frameworks, this study not only advances the extant literature but also offers invaluable insights for organizations striving to bolster knowledge-sharing through the strategic implementation of CSR initiatives.

Ethical sourcing practices play a pivotal role in addressing price inflation within renewable energy supply chains. This qualitative research investigates the multifaceted impacts of ethical sourcing, drawing insights from interviews with key stakeholders in the renewable energy sector. The study reveals that ethical sourcing enhances supply chain transparency, traceability, and resilience by mitigating risks associated with unethical practices such as labor exploitation and environmental degradation. Fair trade initiatives contribute to economic stability and reduce price volatility by ensuring fair compensation for producers and workers, fostering long-term relationships, and reinvesting premiums into community development projects. Sustainable sourcing practices align with consumer preferences for eco-friendly products, reduce the demand for virgin resources, and promote regulatory compliance and incentives, thereby stabilizing costs and reducing environmental impact. Socially responsible companies that prioritize fair labor practices and community support experience fewer disruptions and benefit from a more stable and productive workforce. Entrepreneurship and emotional intelligence among leaders drive the adoption and successful implementation of ethical sourcing practices, enhancing brand reputation, consumer trust, and market competitiveness. Despite challenges, such as higher implementation costs and supplier resistance, the long-term benefits of ethical sourcing outweigh the initial costs and contribute to sustainable supply chains. Collaboration, consumer education, and effective regulation are essential for promoting ethical sourcing across the renewable energy sector.

From 2008 to 2024, the Newborn Screening Translational Research Network (NBSTRN), part of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Hunter Kelly Newborn Screening Program, served as a robust infrastructure to facilitate groundbreaking research in newborn screening (NBS), rare disease, and genomics. Over fifteen years, NBSTRN developed into a significant international network, supporting innovative research on novel technologies to screen, diagnose, treat, manage, and understand the natural history of more than 280 rare diseases. A key component of these efforts has been the development of resources and expertise for the newborn screening community in ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI). This paper presents findings from a survey conducted by the NBSTRN team with input from one of theNBSTRN's expert workgroups, the Bioethics and Legal Workgroup. With responses from 88 members of the NBS community including researchers and state NBS programs, the survey found that individuals rely on internal and collegial ELSI resources and highlighted a substantial demand for structured, accessible training and resources. The survey’s insights emphasize the importance of privacy and informed consent in NBS research, and suggested a need for improved collaborative tools and educational programs focused on ELSI for the NBS community. The survey results may inform future efforts in ELSI and NBS research including the development of expanded ELSI tools that leverage digital platforms and consultative services.

The objective of this research was to create a Spanish-adapted version of the 30-item Multidimensional Ethics Scale (MES-30), analyze its structural validity, and create a short, valid, and culturally-adapted version. A total of 594 employees from organizations operating in different industries, primarily located in Ecuador, participated in this study. The comparison of different models using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) showed that the bifactor model proved better fit in all scenarios. The high common variance explained by the general factor (> 80%) and the high values of ωh (> .90) led to the conclusion that the explanatory model of the adapted MES-30 is essentially one-dimensional. In order to obtain a more valid and reliable measurement of the substantive common factor, a short version (Spanish MES-15) has been proposed, which contains items from all philosophical approaches and three non-redundant scenarios. The one-dimensional model for the Spanish MES-15 showed excellent goodness of fit in all scenarios. Regarding the metric equivalence between the original instrument (adapted MES-30) and the short one, the correlation between both measurements was greater than .90, the correlation of the short version with the social desirability scale was lower, and both instruments similarly predicted the intention of executing the actions described in the scenarios, the probability of executing the actions attributed to peers and supervisors, and the general ethical evaluation of those actions.

The article also discusses ethical considerations and challenges associated with the integration of AI in education, emphasizing the importance of responsible implementation and human supervision.

Brachycephalic dogs are not only affected by brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), but also comprise up to 30% of canine patients seen by veterinary dermatologists, with English Bulldogs and Pugs particularly overrepresented. Some skin diseases are associated with the abnormal anatomic conformation of brachycephalic dogs, while for others there is a underlying genetic basis or a general predisposition. Anatomic alterations associated with brachycephaly, leading to fold formation of the skin and stenosis of the ear canal, together with primary immunodeficiencies described in some breeds, favor the development of pyoderma, Malassezia dermatitis and otitis externa/media. Frequently neglected but often lifelong dermatological problems of brachycephalic dogs are an important consideration when discussing genetic and medical conditions affecting the welfare of those dogs. Here we review the current state of knowledge concerning dermatological problems of brachycephalic dogs, and combine it with clinical experience in the management of these challenging disorders.

Cause-Related Marketing (CRM) has emerged as a new concept that links CSR activities to marketing, enabling corporations to pursue both building company-consumer partnership and gaining sustainable mutual benefits that are elicited from the partnership. Among various cause-related marketing activities, on-line cause-related advertising is the most commonly used one. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of on-line cause-related advertising and moderating role of ethical consumption propensity. In particular, this study intends to contribute to successful development of on-line cause-related advertising strategy by focusing on the relationship between the four factors: customers' perception of on-line cause-related advertising, brand-consumer relationship, brand attachment and loyalty. The results of this study are as follows: First, customers' perception of on-line cause-related advertising was related positively to consumer-brand- relationship. Second, brand-consumer relationship was related positively to brand attachment and customer loyalty. Third, brand attachment was related positively to customer loyalty. Furthermore, from the consumer’s psychological viewpoint, ethical consumption propensity had a significant moderating effect to between customers' perception of cause-related advertising and brand-consumer relationship as well as brand attachment. The results of this study may contribute to the existing literature as an new empirical attempt to examine the effect of the on-line cause-related advertising.

Artificial intelligence (AI) driven language models have seen a rapid rise in development, deployment, and adoption over the last few years. This surge has sparked many discussions about their societal and political impact, including political bias. Bias is a crucial topic in the context of large models due to its far-reaching consequences on technology, politics, and society. It significantly influences public perception, decision-making, political discourse, and AI policy governance and ethics. This study investigates political bias through a comparative analysis of four prominent AI models: ChatGPT-4, Perplexity, Google Gemini, and Claude.Through a comprehensive analysis by systematically and categorically evaluating their responses to politically and ideologically charged tests and prompts, utilizing the Pew Research Center’s Political Typology Quiz, the Political Compass assessment, and ISideWith political party quiz, this study identifies significant ideological leanings and the nature of political bias within these models. The findings revealed that ChatGPT-4 and Claude exhibit a liberal bias, Perplexity is more conservative, while Google Gemini adopts more centrist stances. The presence of such biases underscores the critical need for transparency in AI development and the incorporation of diverse training datasets, regular audits, and user education to mitigate these biases. This analysis also advocates for more robust practices and comprehensive frameworks to assess and reduce political bias in AI, ensuring these technologies contribute positively to society and support informed, balanced, and inclusive public discourse, which will point towards neutrality.The results of this study add to the ongoing discourse about the ethical implications and development of AI models, highlighting the critical need to build trust and integrity in AI models. Additionally, future research directions have been outlined to explore and address the complex issue of bias in AI.

This qualitative research investigates the influence of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) within the e-commerce sector. The study reveals that CSR enhances trust, collaboration, and risk mitigation within e-commerce supply chains through transparent communication, shared values, and ethical practices. Strategically, CSR contributes to enhanced brand equity, competitive advantage, and long-term value creation by differentiating firms in competitive markets and attracting socially conscious consumers and investors. However, economic trade-offs, stakeholder divergence, and operational complexities require firms to adopt adaptive strategies that balance short-term financial goals with long-term sustainability objectives. The findings suggest avenues for future research exploring longitudinal impacts of CSR on supplier relationships, cross-sectoral comparisons, and technological advancements in CSR-driven SRM practices. Practically, e-commerce firms should prioritize strategic alignment of CSR initiatives with core business objectives, engage stakeholders in CSR strategy development, and embrace continuous improvement to foster ethical conduct, stakeholder trust, and sustainable business practices.

53% of adults in the US acknowledge racial bias as a significant issue, 23% of Asian adults experience cultural and ethnic bias, and more than 60% conceal their cultural heritage after racial abuse. AI models like ChatGPT and Google Bard, trained on historically biased data, inadvertently amplify racial and ethnic bias and stereotypes. This paper addresses the issue of racial bias in AI models using scientific, evidence-based analysis and auditing processes to identify biased responses from AI models and develop a mitigation tool. The methodology involves creating a comprehensive database of racially biased questions, terms, and phrases from thousands of legal cases, Wikipedia, and surveys, and then testing them on AI Models and analyzing the responses through sentiment analysis and human evaluation, and eventually creation of an 'AI-BiasAudit,' tool having a racial-ethnic database for social science researchers and AI developers to identify and prevent racial bias in AI models.

We explore the capabilities of AI agents, including problem-solving, predictive analytics, and automation, and their applications across healthcare, business, and education, showcasing their role in diagnostics, customer service, and personalized learning, among other areas. We also address the integration of AI agents in the workplace, presenting strategies for collaboration between humans and AI, and outline the challenges and ethical considerations that accompany the development and deployment of AI technologies. A comprehensive tutorial provides insight into the development process of AI agents, emphasizing goal definition, data handling, algorithm selection, and ethical guidelines. We also consider the pathway towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and the societal and ethical implications of widespread AI integration, proposing strategies for equitable and ethical AI use.

The present paper brings to the fore issues relating to the meaning and construction of ethics in online team communication by exploring the discursive strategies that contribute to the construction of a team’s sense of duty and individual virtuousness. The study relies on a complex toolkit which includes ethnolinguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse and conversation analysis. Data consist in a one-day interaction unit as part of a larger set of real communication exchanges (ca. 34,000) over a time period of six months, observation notes, as well as unstructured interviews. Our empirical analysis has revealed that individual virtuousness and sense of duty are actually interrelated. A virtuous team climate leads team members to share positive perceptions about the team, which in turn increases team commitment. Furthermore, we argue that the blurring of private and professional life not only allows for the enactment of ethic-driven discourse strategies that result in enhanced cooperation and improved team performance but also for high levels of interconnectivity and improved social interaction. The results of the analysis supplement organisational literature based on ethics-centred observations on the effectiveness of virtual work, and show how a discourse-driven approach can provide tools for further theorisations about the practices and the ecology of digital communication.

The worldwide interconnected objects, called Internet of Things (IoTs), have been increasingly growing in the last several years. Different social media platforms and devices are continuously generating data about individuals and facilitate the technological and the social convergence of their Internet-based data and services with globalized users. These social and device-related IoTs create rooms for data breaches as such platforms provide ability to collect private and sensitive data. We assert that data breaches are fundamentally failures of access control - most users are too busy or technically ill-equipped to understand access control policy expressions and decisions. We argue that this is symptomatic of globalised societies structured by the conditions of algorithmic modernity; an era in which our data is increasingly interdependent on, and enmeshed with, ever more complex systems and processes that are vulnerable to attack. Ethically managing data breaches is now too complex for current access control systems, such as Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and Context-Aware Access Control (CAAC). These systems do not provide an explicit mechanism to engage in decision making processes, about who should have access to what data and when, that are involved in data breaches. We argue that a policy ontology will contribute towards the development of Ethical CAAC better suited to attributing accountability for data breaches in the context of algorithmic modernity. We interrogate our proposed Ethical CAAC as a theoretical construct with implications for future policy ontology models and data breach countermeasures. An experimental study on the performance of the proposed framework is carried out with respect to a more generic CAAC framework.

Background: Little is known about the decisional background of choosing an appropriate disease model. Therefore, this paper aims, (1) to identify a spectrum of reasons for choosing between animal and non-animal disease models and (2) provides an ethical analysis of these reasons. Methods: 13 researchers from basic and preclinical research were interviewed, the interviews were analyzed qualitatively and the results were categorized. The ethical analysis was based on the principlism approach and a value judgement model. Results: This paper presents 66 reasons why researchers use animal (41 %) or alternative, non-animal disease models (59 %). Most of the reasons were be assigned to the work environment (29 reasons) and scientific standards (22 reasons). Other reasons were assigned to personal attitudes (11 reasons) and animal welfare (4 reasons). Qualitative relevant normative differences are presented in the ethical analysis. Even if few reasons can be rejected outright from an ethical point of view, there are good reasons to give some more weight than others. Conclusions: The spectrum of reasons and its ethical assessment provide a framework for reflection for researchers who may have to choose between animal models and (investing in) alternatives. This can help to reflect on and justify decisions.

This qualitative research explores the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) within the e-commerce sector. SRM is critical for e-commerce platforms to maintain efficient supply chains, optimize supplier interactions, and ensure competitive advantage in a dynamic marketplace. AI technologies offer advanced capabilities such as predictive analytics, machine learning algorithms, and natural language processing, which revolutionize traditional SRM practices by enhancing decision-making accuracy, mitigating supply chain risks, and fostering personalized supplier relationships. Through semi-structured interviews with 20 e-commerce professionals and industry experts, this study investigates AI's impact on supplier selection, operational efficiencies, and strategic supplier relationships. Findings highlight AI's ability to streamline supplier evaluation processes, improve demand forecasting accuracy, and optimize inventory management strategies. AI also facilitates personalized supplier engagement through sentiment analysis and real-time insights, promoting collaboration and trust. Ethical considerations, including algorithmic bias and data privacy, emerge as significant concerns in AI adoption for SRM. Addressing these challenges is crucial to maintaining stakeholder trust and ensuring responsible AI deployment. Furthermore, technological integration barriers and organizational readiness are identified as critical factors influencing successful AI implementation. Looking forward, the study underscores the potential of AI to drive innovation and competitiveness in e-commerce SRM, emphasizing the importance of ethical AI practices, technological infrastructure investments, and organizational preparedness for sustainable growth.

In the rapidly advancing field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), this study presents a critical evaluation of the resilience and cybersecurity efficacy of leading AI models, including ChatGPT-4, Bard, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot. Central to this research is the use of innovative adversarial prompts designed to rigorously test the content moderation capabilities of these AI systems. The study introduces new types of adversarial tests and the Response Quality Score (RQS), a metric specifically developed to assess the nuances of AI responses. Additionally, the research spotlights FreedomGPT, an AI tool engineered to optimize the alignment between user intent and AI interpretation. The empirical results from this investigation are pivotal for assessing the current robustness and security of AI models. They highlight the necessity for ongoing development and meticulous testing to bolster AI defenses against an array of adversarial challenges. Importantly, the study also delves into the ethical and societal implications associated with employing advanced 'jailbreak' techniques in AI testing. The findings are significant for understanding AI vulnerabilities and formulating strategies to enhance the reliability and ethical soundness of AI technologies, paving the way for safer and more secure AI applications.

Accounting studies neglected to link corporate social responsibility to accounting information, the theoretical background revealed the study gap and the paper referred to it in the question: Do the corporate social responsibility CSR dimensions affect the accounting information quality? as the study aimed to reveal the effect of corporate social responsibility dimensions (economic, ethical, legal, and philanthropic) on accounting information quality (relevance and reliability) in banks in the Riyadh Governorate in Saudi Arabia. The researcher used a questionnaire to collect data from the study sample, and the data analysis was done using SPSS and smart partial least squares (pls), and its reliability and validity have been confirmed. Result revealed a positive effect of CSR (economic, ethical) dimension on the relevance of accounting information, a negative effect of CSR Legal dimension on the relevance of accounting information, and no effect of CSR philanthropic dimension on the relevance of accounting information, a positive effect of CSR (ethical, philanthropic) dimension on the reliability of accounting information and no effect of CSR economic and legal dimension on the reliability of accounting information.

This review article is aimed at exploring the possibility of developing an integrated approach in the management of the different needs of endometrial cancer (EC) patients seeking to become pregnant. Life preservation of the woman, health preservation of the baby, a precocious and – as much as possible – minimally invasive characterization of the health and fertility parameters of the patient, together with the concerns regarding the obstetric, neonatal, and adult health risks of the children conceived via assisted reproduction techniques (ART) are all essential aspects of the problem to be taken into consideration, yet the possibility to harmonize such needs through a concerted integrated approach is still highly challenging. This article aims to illustrate the main features of EC and how it affects the normal physiology of pre-menopausal women. Then, we focus on the prospect for a miR-based, molecular evaluation of patient health status, including both EC early diagnosis and staging and, similarly, the receptivity of the woman, discussing the possible evaluation of both aspects using a single specific panel of circulating miR in the patient, thus allowing a relatively fast, non-invasive way to perform such testing with a significantly reduced margin of error. Finally, the ethical and legal/regulatory complexities arising from such innovative techniques require not only a risk-benefit analysis; respect for patient autonomy and equitable health care access allocation are fundamental issues as well.

Barry Turner’s 1978 Man-made Disasters and Charles Perrow’s 1984 Normal Accidents were seminal books but a detailed comparison has yet to be undertaken. Doing so is important to establish content and priority of key ideas underpinning contemporary safety science. Turner’s research found socio-technical and systemic patterns that meant that major organisational disasters could be foreseen and were preventable. Perrow’s macro-structuralist industry focus was on technologically deterministic but unpredictable and unpreventable ‘system’ accidents, particularly rare catastrophes. Andrew Hopkins and Nick Pidgeon respectively suggested that some prominent writers who wrote after Turner may not have been aware of, or didn’t properly acknowledge, Turner’s work. Normal Accidents didn’t cite Turner in 1984 or 1999. Using a methodology involving systematic reading and historical, biographical and thematic theory analysis, a detailed review of Turner’s and Perrow’s backgrounds and publications sheds new light on Turner’s priority and accomplishment, highlighting substantial similarities as well as clear differences. In a previously unpublished letter, Perrow confirmed reading Man-made Disasters while writing Normal Accidents. Turner became better known after a 1997 second edition but under-acknowledgment issues continued. Ethical citation and potential reasons for under-acknowledgment are discussed. It is concluded that Turner’s foundational importance for safety science should be better recognised.

This paper combines the Good Regulator Theorem with the Law of Requisite Variety and seven other requisites that are necessary and sufficient for a cybernetic regulator to be effective and ethical. The resulting Ethical Regulator Theorem provides a basis for systematically evaluating and improving the adequacy of existing or proposed designs for systems that make decisions that can have ethical consequences; regardless of whether the regulators are human, machines, cyberanthropic hybrids, organizations, corporations, or government institutions. The theorem is then used to define an ethical design process that has potentially far-reaching implications for society. A six-level framework is proposed for classifying cybernetic and superintelligent systems, which highlights the existence of a possibility-space bifurcation in our future time-line. The implementation of “super-ethical” systems is identified as an urgent imperative for humanity to avoid the danger that superintelligent machines might lead to a technological dystopia. Third-order cybernetics is defined as the cybernetics of ethical systems. Concrete actions, a grand challenge, and a vision of a super-ethical society are proposed to help steer the future of the human race and our wonderful planet towards a realistically achievable minimum viable cyberanthropic utopia.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the disruptive potential to transform patients’ lives via innovations in pharmaceutical sciences, drug development, clinical trials, and manufacturing. However, it presents significant challenges, ethical concerns, and risks across sectors and societies. AI’s rapid advancement has revealed regulatory gaps as existing public policies struggle to keep pace with the challenges posed by these emerging technologies. The term AI itself has become commonplace to argue that greater “human oversight” for “machine intelligence” is needed to harness the power of this revolutionary technology for both potential and risk management, and hence to call for more practical regulatory guidelines, harmonized frameworks, and effective policies to ensure safety, scalability, data privacy, and governance, transparency, and equitable treatment. In this review paper, we employ a holistic multidisciplinary lens to overview the current regulatory landscape with a synopsis of the FDA workshop perspectives on the use of AI in drug and biological product development. We discuss the promises of responsible data-driven AI, challenges and related practices adopted to overcome limitations, and our practical reflections on regulatory oversight. Finally, the paper outlines a path forward and future opportunities for lawful ethical AI. This review highlights the importance of risk-based regulatory oversight, including diverging views in the field, in reaching a consensus.

This article purposed to examine the impact of integration between Lean accounting (LA) tools & Just in Time (JIT) technique on Cost Reduction (CR) in modern manufacturing environment in Saudi establishments, these two variable moderated by Ethical Standards (ESs). A quantitative methodology was used for realizing the study objectives and answering study questions, the main tool exercised for producing the incipient data was a fully-structured questionnaire with closed ended questions, which was designed and passed around online among a selected sample of (109) managers and accountants in Saudi manufacturing firms. Descriptive and deductive statistics adopted to derive the findings, wherefore the compiled responses analyzed by SPSS & AMOS and the results showed that there is direct and indirect effect of LA tools & JIT technique on CR in Saudi industrial companies, especially when using ESs. These findings could provide decision makers in Saudi manufacturing companies with the acuity of adopting both methods in a combined way to maximize the profits of these firms. The results of this study also suggest that the application of LA tools & JIT technique has a positive effect on the promotion of sustainable manufacture and consequent achievement of high sustainable performance.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on brand image in the apparel industry in Jordan, using the moderating variable of customer consciousness. The current research uses a quantitative, descriptive, cause-effect, and cross-sectional approach, and also it uses a convenience sampling method. Data was collected from 440 respondents. Results indicate that Jordanian Apparel organizations have medium to highly implementing of all items and constructs of CSR, brand image items, and consciousness items. Moreover, there is a strong relationship between CSR dimensions, a medium relationship be-tween each CSR dimension and brand image, a medium relationship between each CSR dimension and consciousness, a medium relationship between total CSR and brand image, a medium relationship between total CSR and consciousness, and the medium relationship between brand image and consciousness. Results of the first model show that total CSR affects the brand image. Where social responsibility has the highest positive effect, followed by ethical responsibility, then economic responsibility, however, environmental responsibility negatively affects the brand image. The second model shows consciousness moderates the effect of CSR on the brand image. The study recommends longitudinal research on the Jordanian Apparel industry, especially to test the effect of environmental responsibility on the brand image. Moreover, the re-search uses customers’ consciousness as a moderating variable, which improves the effect of CSR on brand image. The Apparel industry organizations in Jordan should revise their daily practices particularly environmental responsibility and/or increase their customers’ awareness of their practices. Finally, the current research contributes to existing studies by using consciousness as a moderating variable.

Purpose: The goal of the present study was to investigate chief executives’ intention and potential to create a family-supportive culture in the Brazilian context, further assessing the role of their aspirations in their employees’ perceptions. Methodology: Two researchers conducted 60 minutes of online semi-structured interviews with CEOs of seven companies of different sizes (measured by the number of employees), economic sectors, and capital structure. To complement the data gathered from CEOs, we also conducted private and individual 30-minute online interviews with three employees from each company. Findings: A total of four categories and 11 sub-categories emerged from the analysis of CEO interviews, and four categories and six sub-categories emerged from the analysis of employee interviews. Originality: The results suggest that family-supportive culture is promoted through behaviors that are consistent with the organization’s core values, as well as through commitment of the agenda and resources of the company’s leadership team.

Pregnancy planning and genetic testing (PPGT) has emerged as a tool in reproductive healthcare, offering parents-to-be insight in their risks of having a child with a genetic disorder. This paper reviews the advantages, drawbacks and challenges associated with PPGT, providing some practical guidance for health care professionals. Advantages include identification of genetic risks, a possibility to informed reproductive decision-making, and the potential to reduce the parents-to-be risk for an affected child. Challenges and drawbacks include provision of service, ethical considerations, genetic counselling complexities, and the need to increase public and professional awareness by comprehensive education and accessibility. Practical guidance involves considerations for selecting appropriate candidates, counselling strategies, and how to integrate PPGT into existing healthcare frameworks. By addressing these factors, PPGT can offer an increased reproductive informed choice for the individual and the couple reducing the burden of disease in the family.

The findings underscored the foundational role of trust in establishing resilient supplier relationships, facilitated by transparent communication, consistent performance evaluation, and mutual respect for contractual obligations. Effective communication practices, supported by digital platforms and technologies such as AI, blockchain, IoT, and cloud computing, enhanced operational transparency and decision-making capabilities across supply chains. The study identified diverse approaches to risk assessment, from qualitative evaluations to quantitative models utilizing predictive analytics and scenario planning. However, participants highlighted challenges including geopolitical uncertainties, trade disruptions, regulatory changes, and cultural barriers, necessitating adaptive strategies and diversified sourcing options. Innovation initiatives such as joint product development and technology adoption were crucial in enhancing supply chain agility and competitive advantage. Ethical considerations emerged as a critical aspect, influencing supplier selection criteria, CSR initiatives, environmental sustainability practices, and labor standards compliance. Integrating ethical guidelines into supplier contracts reinforced corporate values and enhanced brand reputation. Overall, this study contributes practical implications for e-commerce practitioners seeking to enhance supply chain resilience, mitigate supplier risks, and sustain competitive advantage in a dynamic global marketplace.

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (data of year 2020), Breast Cancer (BC) is one of the most common cancer types worldwide, with large geographical variations occurring between countries and world regions and highest incidence rates in countries that have undergone economic transition. The risk factors for BC include women ageing, genetic mutations, reproductive history, dense breast tissues, personal history of BC or specific non-cancerous breast diseases, family history of breast or ovarian cancer, previous treatment using radiation therapy, and exposure to hormone-like drugs such as diethylstilbestrol (DES). Additional risk factors include being overweight or having obesity after menopause, and taking hormones. MicroRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) are small non-coding RNA molecules that have an essential role in gene expression and are significantly linked to the tumor development and angiogenesis process in different types of cancer, including BC. In the last years, the knowledge about miRNAs role in BC has significantly improved, and complex interactions among coding and non-coding RNA has been elucidated. In this context, an increasing number of papers had been published regarding the role of miR-125 in BC. In this review, we summarize the state-of-the-art about this research topic in addition to elaborating on the need to set novel ethical and legal standards for the governance of such innovations in healthcare.

The metaverse, a virtual world comprising a collective virtual shared space where users interact with one another through avatars and computer-generated objects, aims to closely mimic our real world by integrating elements of Artificial Intelligence (AI), immersive reality, advanced connectivity, and Web3. As metaverse technologies gain momentum across multiple sectors, including animal farming, their potential for addressing complex challenges such as climate change and sustainability in precision food production systems becomes increasingly apparent. However, it is crucial to consider the ethical implications and the role of sensor data and livestock behavior analysis in developing metaverse technologies for modern animal farming, given the sensitive and controversial nature of animal welfare. Failure to address these ethical considerations and harness the power of sensor data and behavior analysis could lead to a lack of credibility and insensitivity towards adopting metaverse technologies in the animal farming sector. It is essential to ensure that the development of metaverse technologies does not prioritize technology over animal welfare, ethics, socio-economic implications, and the potential for data-driven insights. Addressing diversity and equity in the context of animal farming and the metaverse is crucial to avoid perpetuating existing inequalities during the implementation of metaverse technologies. Deepfakes, with their ability to simulate real-world scenarios and interactions, emerge as a potential solution, offering personalized patient education, immersive mental health interventions, remote consultations with virtual avatars, and realistic training simulations for medical professionals.Objective:This research aims to comprehensively understand the multifaceted impact of AI deepfakes in healthcare systems. This study examines the rationale and perceptions surrounding AI in military technologies, focusing on its application in autonomous weapons systems (AWS), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), and decision-support systems (DSS). AI models, such as unmanned aerial and ground platforms, showed high mission success rates, with 92% mission accomplishment, 95% true positive threat identification, and low false alarms. AI's effectiveness surpassed human operators, particularly in response time and threat detection. A global survey revealed mixed opinions: two-thirds believed AI enhances national security, yet 70% opposed autonomous weapons due to ethical concerns, particularly civilian casualties. The study highlights AI's advantages in improving decision-making speed and accuracy but acknowledges challenges such as ethical considerations and public trust in autonomous systems. Future research should address ethical AI models, international humanitarian law (IHL) standards in military operations, human-AI interaction in hazardous environments, and policies related to military robotics and accountability. Understanding and enhancing public awareness of AI in military contexts is also essential.

At 8000 m and above, a ‘death zone’ reputation afforded protection for the fragile ecosystems of the Himalaya and Korakoram ranges for thousands of years. After decades of high-altitude mountaineering, environmental impacts have been documented such as associated carbon-intensive air travel and contamination from waste. Despite the growing popularity, high-risk and fragile context of the sport, the behaviour, perspectives and experiences of high-altitude mountaineers, and the social and economic consequences have not been researched. Following an interpretive paradigm and using purposive sampling, this qualitative study conducted in-depth interviews and open-ended survey questions to collect the experiences of sixteen high-altitude mountaineers. Analysis of the qualitative data was informed by Grounded Theory with the coding process leading to the overarching category of ‘leave no trace’. The results show how the high risks to life, and growing popularity of the activity influence mountaineer’s ability to act sustainably and increase unsustainable behaviour despite a desire to ‘leave no trace’ on the mountain. Meanwhile, climate change has already and will increasingly have profound impacts on the risks associated with 8000m mountaineering. Allowing more time for acclimation would help to address the root causes of unsustainable behaviours along with better enforcement of regulations.

Rapid advances in the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of genetic disorders has increased the number of conditions that could be detected through universal newborn screening (NBS). However, addition of conditions to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP) and implementation of nationwide screening has been a slow process taking several years to accomplish for individual conditions. Here we describe web-based tools and resources developed and implemented by the newborn screening translational research network (NBSTRN) to advance newborn screening research and support NBS stakeholders. NBSTRN’s tools include the Longitudinal Pediatric Data Resource (LPDR), the NBS Condition Resource (NBS-CR), the NBS Virtual Repository (NBS-VR), and the Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues (ELSI) Advantage. Research programs including the Inborn Errors of Metabolism Information System (IBEM-IS), BabySeq, EarlyCheck, and Family Narratives Use Cases have utilized NBSTRN’s tools, and in turn contributed research data to further expand and refine these this resource. Additionally, we discuss ongoing tool development to facilitate expansion of genetic disease screening in increasingly diverse populations. In conclusion, NBSTRN’s tools and resources provide a trusted platform to enable NBS stakeholders to advance NBS research and improve clinical care for patients and their families.

This study explores the complexities of risk communication practices in orthodontics, specifically examining the perspectives of orthodontists in Greece and Slovakia. Informed by the foundational importance of effective communication in health sciences, particularly in facilitating valid consent and shared decision-making, this research addresses gaps identified in the literature concerning the consistent communication of potential treatment risks based on demographic and cultural characteristics. The study identifies 15 potential critical risks with orthodontic treatment. These risks include root necrosis; temporary undesired changes to the occlusion; sleep difficulties; not achieving an ideal result; development of black triangles between teeth; taking additional X-rays; speech difficulties; using a protective splint during sports; duration of treatment; number of visits; transmission of infectious diseases; and swallowing orthodontic appliances. The questionnaire, distributed electronically to orthodontists in Greece (n=570) and Slovakia (n=210) from Sept. 2022 to Dec. 2022, aimed to assess risk communication practices, with consideration to country, gender, and degree-related variations. 168 valid questionnaires (91 from Slovakia and 77 from Greece) were obtained indicating significant disparities in the risks emphasized and preferred forms of consent. The Greek orthodontists focused more on the risks involved such as on relapse, root resorption, temporal occlusal changes, and failure of desired movement, while the Slovak practitioners tend to be interested more about sleeping difficulties, temporal occlusal changes and not achieving an ideal result. They also tend to obtain written or digital consent from patients or their parents/guardians more frequently than the Greek team. Male orthodontists discussed specific risks more frequently, including relapse and extractions, whereas females preferred written or digital consent. PhD-trained orthodontists prioritized certain risks, indicating the need for tailored approaches. This study underscores the dynamic nature of risk assessment in orthodontic practice, emphasizing its ethical and strategic dimensions. The findings advocate for tailored risk communication strategies, that recognize individual, contextual, and cultural factors and the need of an orthodontic informed consent protocol for tailored communication approach for patients to elevate the standard of care in European orthodontics. The reliance on digital tools reflects contemporary trends in enhancing patient understanding, thereby supporting ongoing innovation in orthodontic practices.

The binomial nomenclature system, introduced by Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century, has been fundamental for scientific communication and data management. Despite its utility, some scientific names reflect historical biases and ethical issues, including colonial legacies, racism, sexism, and derogatory terms. Recent debates highlight the need to address these injustices, with arguments both for and against revising such names. Critics argue that extensive revisions could disrupt scientific stability, while proponents emphasize the moral imperative to correct these issues. In this opinion paper, we advocate for the establishment of a dedicated committee within international nomenclature bodies to revise taxonomic names with clear ethical concerns and recommend the use of persistent identifiers to effectively manage and track name changes, mitigating potential disruptions to taxonomy and the science that depends on it. By adopting transparent revision processes and making use of digital technology, we can address ethical issues without remarkable upheaval. Science should not perpetuate historical injustices, and it is vital for the scientific community to proactively address social injustices in nomenclature to mitigate ongoing debates and resistance.

This study delves into the dynamic nature of 3D genome organization, investigating how these structures influence cellular functions in response to environmental changes and over time. Through a combination of real-time imaging and advanced computational models, we aim to unravel the complex interplay between 3D DNA structures, non-coding RNAs, and chromatin organization, and their collective impact on gene expression and cellular differentiation. A significant focus is placed on understanding the role of 3D DNA structures in the development and progression of genetic disorders. By employing comprehensive genomic and epigenomic profiling, this research seeks to identify structural aberrations linked to diseases, paving the way for the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. The complex progression, specialized care, and comorbidities of chronic diseases place a financial and health burden on society. In some instances, the high hospital readmission rate is also a result of chronic diseases. The readmission rates can be decreased if the quality of life for patients is increased and healthcare costs are reduced through effective management and preventive measures. As a result, healthcare professionals, service providers, and policy-makers are looking for innovative approaches to reduce healthcare costs while enhancing the quality of care. There is an emerging trend in deploying technological advancements like artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), sensors, wearables, social media, mobile apps, and genomics to decrease hospital readmissions. In some instances, predictive analytics, early warning systems, personal-ized care management, remote monitoring and Telehealth, decision support systems, patient education and engagement, and other areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning have outperformed traditional approaches in lowering hospital readmissions. Although AI effectively reduces readmission, there are potential risks if it is not combined with efficient interventions. Therefore, real-time monitoring and intervention are required for AI systems to increase patient safety and decrease hospital readmissions. To achieve autonomy, prevent harm, achieve fairness, and achieve explicability, the ethical principles relating to AI systems should be taken into ac-count. This study examines the significant impact on health and the economy of hospital read-missions for chronic diseases and the role of AI in reducing readmissions.

With the exponential growth of internet usage and mobile devices, the volume of user behavior data has surged, offering significant opportunities and challenges for businesses. This paper explores user behavior analysis in the context of big data, highlighting its pivotal role in driving innovation and strategic decision-making. We begin by discussing the importance of user behavior data and reviewing technological advancements such as machine learning, natural language processing, and data mining that enable deep insights into user behavior. Through a case study on linguistic analysis in livestreaming e-commerce, we demonstrate how text-mining techniques can correlate linguistic characteristics with sales performance, providing actionable marketing insights. We further explore the broader business applications, including personalized recommendations, user portraits, product design, and strategic decision-making. Technical and ethical challenges, such as data integration, privacy concerns, and algorithmic bias, are also addressed. The paper concludes with a discussion on future trends, such as AI and ML advancements, edge computing, IoT proliferation, and ethical AI frameworks, poised to shape user behavior analysis. Our findings underscore the transformative potential of user behavior data in enhancing business operations and user experiences, providing recommendations for future research focused on real-time analytics, privacy-preserving techniques, and ethical implications of data-driven decisions.

This paper proposes a paradigm shift in AI governance by integrating Indigenous knowledge systems to foster inclusivity and cultural sensitivity. Traditional AI governance frameworks are primarily Western-centric, often overlooking the community-oriented values and ethical considerations essential to Indigenous cultures. This study highlights principles such as Kaitiakitanga from Māori culture, which emphasizes guardianship and environmental stewardship, and Hózhó from Navajo philosophy, which stresses harmony and balance. By engaging Indigenous leaders and knowledge holders throughout the AI lifecycle, this approach ensures technology aligns with community values, addressing critical issues like data sovereignty, ethical technology use, and cultural sensitivity. This paper underscores the necessity of relational accountability in AI governance, which includes prioritizing the health of ecosystems alongside community welfare. This model advocates for an AI framework that not only rectifies historical marginalization but also empowers Indigenous communities to shape the technologies affecting their lives. Furthermore, integrating Indigenous perspectives strengthens the ethical foundation of AI systems, advancing sustainability, social justice, and cultural responsiveness in technology applications. The proposed framework illustrates how Indigenous ethical concepts can transform AI governance by aligning technological progress with values of ecological stewardship and community welfare, creating an AI landscape that respects and reflects diverse cultural contexts. Ultimately, this research demonstrates that Indigenous knowledge systems can significantly enhance AI’s effectiveness and equity, paving the way for more sustainable and culturally attuned technological solutions.

Explainable AI (XAI) has emerged as a pivotal tool in healthcare diagnostics, offering much-needed transparency and interpretability in complex AI models. XAI techniques, such as SHAP, Grad-CAM, and LIME, enable clinicians to understand AI-driven decisions, fostering greater trust and collaboration between human and machine in clinical settings. This review explores the key benefits of XAI in enhancing diagnostic accuracy, personalizing patient care, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. However, despite its advantages, XAI faces significant challenges, including balancing model accuracy with interpretability, scaling for real-time clinical use, and mitigating biases inherent in medical data. Ethical concerns, particularly surrounding fairness and accountability, are also discussed in relation to AI's growing role in healthcare. The review emphasizes the importance of developing hybrid models that combine high accuracy with improved interpretability and suggests that future research should focus on explainable-by-design systems, reducing computational costs, and addressing ethical issues. As AI continues to integrate into healthcare, XAI will play an essential role in ensuring that AI systems are transparent, accountable, and aligned with the ethical standards required in clinical practice.

In many algorithmic decision-making processes, optimizing for efficiency alone can inadvertently perpetuate or exacerbate biases, leading to inequitable outcomes. This study explores how data analysis and machine learning can be leveraged to identify and mitigate these biases, ensuring that optimization models yield both efficient and fair solutions. The research presents a framework for incorporating fairness constraints into multi-objective optimization, utilizing various fairness metrics such as demographic parity, equal opportunity, and disparate impact. It investigates the application of this framework across different domains, including resource allocation in healthcare systems, loan approvals in finance, and personalized learning platforms in education. By analyzing real-world data sets, the study demonstrates how fairness-aware optimization can lead to more equitable outcomes without significantly compromising efficiency. One in 12 babies is born with a rare genetic disease. Sadly, most cases are undetected until later age, missing time for early treatment and opportunity to prevent complications. Humanity has entered a new era where Big Data collected by governments, including 2D and 3D facial scans, are available. Many rare genetic diseases can be identified by artificial intelligence (AI) analysis of the facial photo. Phenotyping AI utilizations facilitate comprehensive and accurate genetic evaluations. AI processing of this Big Data to identify rare genetic diseases could bring unimaginable benefits to healthcare, although this would be a questionable step in terms of citizen privacy and could lead to future "Orwellian" ramifications with government abuse. Going forward, a balance must be found between protecting the privacy of citizens and the enticing use of AI for their health risks and cost savings through prevention. The unimaginable potential of AI early diagnostics from facial photos also raises various ethical and legal concerns.
