This study aimed to evaluate and compare the mechanical properties of three CAD-CAM monolithic esthetic zirconia (Ceramill® Zolid FX Multilayer (ZF), IPS e.max® ZirCAD MT Multi (ZM), and KATANATM STML (KS)) with a CAD-CAM lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max® CAD LT (MC)) as control. 80 samples (20/group) were milled, sintered, and subjected to a three-point bending test (3-PBT) to measure flexural strength and elastic modulus; Vickers indentations were used to measure microhardness. The numerical outcomes were analyzed using one-way ANOVA with a statistical significance set at <0.05. Zirconia showed superior mechanical properties compared with lithium disilicate (P<0.05). ZM had the highest values of flexural strength (P<0.05), KS and ZM showed significantly higher elastic modulus values than ZF (P<0.05), and ZF and KS microhardness values were significantly higher than ZM (P<0.05). Monolithic multi-layered zirconia had enhanced mechanical properties when compared with lithium disilicate and can be a predictable replacement in clinical applications.

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the fracture resistance of definitive zirconia dioxide restorations obtained using a computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system. Methods: Two groups of ten samples were analyzed for each material (n: 20), the first group was Zolid Gen X Amann Girrbach (ZGX) and the second group was Cercon HT Dentsply Sirona (CDS). The restorations were designed with identical parameters and milled with a CAD/CAM system. Each specimen was load tested at a speed of 0.5 mm/min with a direction parallel to the major axis of the tooth and with an initial preload of 10N until fracture using a universal testing machine (Universal/Tensile Testing Machine, Autograph AGS-X Series) equipped with a 20 kN load cell. The results obtained were recorded in Newtons (N), using software connected to the testing machine. Results: Statistically significant differences were found, and the fracture toughness of the monolithic zirconia crowns was lower in the CDS group (1744.84 ± 172.8 N), compared to the ZGX group (2387.41 ± 516 N). Conclusions: The monolithic zirconia CAD-CAM zirconia crowns showed sufficient fracture strength to be used in posterior molar and premolar zones with either material as they withstood fracture loads greater than the maximum masticatory force.

This study evaluated the impact of rough, smooth, and very smooth Titanium (Ti) and zirconia (Zr) surfaces on the neutrophil expression of elastase (NE), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-8, MMP-9 and extracellular traps (NETs). Ti and Zr disks with a diameter of 10mm and a thickness of 1.5mm were processed using diamond-impregnated polishing burs and paste to generate rough (R; Ra= > 3µm), smooth (S; Ra= ≥1 to 1.5µm) and very smooth (VS; Ra= <0.1µm) surfaces. Peripheral neutrophils from Wistar rats were cultured on these surfaces and the culture supernatants subsequently analyzed for the presence of NE, MMP-8, and MMP-9 by ELISA, while NETs formation was demonstrated immunohistochemically by staining neutrophils with CD16b and DNA with DAPI. Overall, the expression of NE and MMP-8 were significantly higher from neutrophils cultured on both on Ti and Zr rough surfaces compared to the very smooth surface (R>S>VS) after 2h and 4h of culture. The expression of MMP-9 also increased with culture time however no significant surface effects on expression were observed. Similarly, rough Ti and Zr surfaces (R & S) also showed significantly larger NETs formation compared to the very smooth surface (VS) after 4h and 8h culture. Our findings suggest that increasing surface roughness on Ti and Zr triggers higher secretion of NE, MMP-8 and NETs formation.

In this study, we considered the structural stability, electronic properties, and phonon dispersion of the cubic (c-ZrO₂), tetragonal (t-ZrO₂), and monoclinic (m-ZrO₂) phases of ZrO₂. We found that the monoclinic phase of zirconium dioxide is the most stable among the three phases in terms of total energy, lowest enthalpy, highest entropy, and other thermodynamic properties. The smallest negative modes were found for m-ZrO₂. Our analysis of the electronic properties showed that during the m–t phase transformation of ZrO₂, the Fermi level first shifts by 0.125 eV toward higher energies and then decreases by 0.08 eV in the t–c cross-section. The band gaps for c-ZrO₂, t-ZrO₂, and m-ZrO₂ are 5.140 eV, 5.898 eV, and 5.288 eV, respectively. Calculations based on the analysis of the influence of doping 3.23, 6.67, 10.35, and 16.15 mol. %Y₂O₃ onto the m-ZrO₂ structure showed that the enthalpy of m-YSZ decreases linearly, which accompanies further stabilization of monoclinic ZrO₂ and an increase in its defectiveness. The doping-induced and concentration-dependent phase transition of zirconium dioxide under the influence of yttrium oxide was studied, after which the position of the Fermi level changes and the energy gap decreases. It has been established that, not only for pure systems but including those doped with Y₂O₃, the main contribution to the formation of the conduction band is made by the p-states of electrons. The t-ZrO₂ (101) and t-YSZ (101) surface models were selected as optimal surfaces for water adsorption based on a comparison of their surface energies. An analysis of the mechanism of water adsorption on the surface of t-ZrO₂ (101) and t-YSZ (101) showed that H₂O on unstabilized t-ZrO₂ (101) is adsorbed dissociatively with an energy of -1.22 eV, as well as by the method of molecular chemisorption with an energy of -0.69 eV and the formation of a hydrogen bond with a bond length of 1.01 Å. In the case of t-YSZ (101), water is molecularly adsorbed onto the surface with an energy of -1.84 eV. Dissociative adsorption of water occurs at an energy of -1.23 eV, near the yttrium atom. The calculations showed that ab initio research methods are capable of describing the mechanism of phase transitions of materials under the influence of alloying. That is, by optimizing the parameters of DFT calculations, it is possible to observe the effects of doping on other physical and chemical properties of materials, which are still beyond the scope of quantum chemical modeling. The obtained results complement the database of research works carried out in the field of the application of biocompatible zirconium dioxide crystals and ceramics in green energy generation and can be used in designing humidity-to-electricity converters and creating solid oxide fuel cells based on ZrO₂.

Yttria stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) ceramics with drastically reduced yttria content have been introduced by different manufacturers aiming at improving the damage tolerance of ceramic components. In this study an alumina doped 1.5Y-TZP was axially pressed, pressureless sintered in air at 1250–1400 °C for 2 h and characterized with respect to mechanical properties, microstructure and phase composition. The material exhibits a combination of high strength of 1000 MPa and a high toughness of 8.5–10 MPa√m. The measured fracture toughness is, however, extremely depending on measurement protocol. Direct crack length measurements overestimate toughness due to trapping effects. The initially purely tetragonal material has a high transformability of &gt; 80 %, the transformation behavior is predominantly dilatoric, measured R-curve related toughness increments are in good agreement with transformation toughness increments derived from XRD data.

Yttria stabilized zirconia materials are frequently used in mechanical engineering and biomedical applications. Demanding loading conditions require materials combining a high level of strength and fracture toughness. A ready to press alumina doped 2 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia powder was shaped by axial pressing and sintering in air at 1250 - 1500 °C for 2 h. The best combination of strength and toughness value of 7.8 MPa√m. Materials sintered in the middle of the chosen temperature range combine fully density, high transformability and small grain size. Toughness measurements by direct crack length measurements delivered unrealistically high fracture toughness values.

Geopolymer is an emerging material alternative to Portland cement and has potential as a refractory material. Adding filler in geopolymer material is a strategy to increase the advantages of its physical and mechanical properties. It has been previously reported that adding nanoparticles can increase the compressive strength value, but there is no reported interaction between nanoparticles and geopolymer during the geopolymerization process. This study aims to study the effect of adding nano-zirconia fillers on the physical and mechanical changes of metakaolin-based geopolymers with nano-zirconia fillers. The geopolymer samples were made with 100 g of metakaolin as the base material and nano-zirconia in amounts of 2 gr, 5 gr, 10 gr, and 15 gr. Further characterization was carried out by XRD, FTIR, and SEM-EDX. This study showed that the compressive strength of the MZr05 sample increased significantly by 58.7% compared to the control sample. The test results of the structure and functional groups did not lead to any new compounds formed in the geopolymerization reaction. Therefore, the interaction of metakaolin geopolymer with nano-zirconia only creates an interfacial bonding.

Partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) is a promising material with superior combination properties in a wide range of industries. In this study, the effect of grain size on the mechanical properties such as hardness, bending strength and fracture toughness (named as ‘indentation toughness’ in this study) was investigated. The multi-doped zirconia ceramics were prepared by powder processing and pressure-less sintered following four sintering schedules. The measured mechanical properties results show that the polymorph structure sintered at a higher temperature has a lower bending strength and hardness. But 300% more indentation toughness (30.54 Kg/mm) of samples sintered at 1600 °C +1150 °C relative to others was estimated due to the grain size effect by our suggested equation. By contrast, the fracture toughness was calculated with an existing method. The results showed that similar trends were obtained. It appeared to be a novel method for evaluating the toughness of partially stabilized zirconia ceramics with micron grains based on the size effect.

The development in the field of ceramics has been increasing over the past several decades. Among all of the dental ceramics, zirconia ceramics show very good mechanical properties and a significant improvement in mechanical function. However, it is properly established that each step of the fabrication process of zirconia ceramics must be controlled to achieve the expected mechanical properties. These steps include the block constructing, sintering process, machining and surface processing. Recent advances have focused on zirconia ceramics in forming and sintering processes, mechanical properties, combining with various materials, and on surface processing. All these items provide conceptions about the formability and machinability of the zirconia. Until now, very excellent studies have been done to specify the evolution of microstructures, phase and mechanical properties of zirconia ceramics during the sintering process. However, more studies are required in this field. This paper aims to demonstrate general views and various studies in the field of zirconia ceramics. The properties, applications and tests performed and the recent developments in the field of zirconia bioceramics are discussed.

The phase composition design principle is introduced to obtain balanced properties of ionic conductivity and thermo-tolerant for zirconia solid electrolytes used in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The zirconia ceramic solid electrolytes are fabricated by two-step free sintering. With increasing Y/Mg ionic ratio from 1.78:1 to 1.88:1, the content of monoclinic phase fluctuates little (±3%). The ionic conductivity, including the total electrical resistance; grain electrical resistance and grain boundary electrical resistance at 1223K, are all gradually declining with the increasing of Y/Mg ionic ratio. Furthermore, the enrichment of Mg ion in grain boundary acts as a disincentive to grain boundary ionic conductivity. In addition, the maximum total equivalent conductivity at 1223K in this study reaches to 0.143 Scm-1 which can compare with that of certain YSZ. It will be beneficial to SOFCs application profited from increasing ionic conductivity of ceramic solid electrolytes.

Abstract: This work for the first time investigated the densification of multi-doping zirconia ceramic body with organic coating powders for solid electrolyte of solid oxide fuel cells via online imaging technology. The densification results show the initial stage plays a key role in the sintering. It can be found the covered organic PVA (polyvinyl acetate) supplies a potential kinetics to the initial densification during sintering. As a result, a kinetic function of densification in the initial stage was suggested. Furthermore, a novel sintering model with six sub-stages is developed for polycrystalline zirconia ceramics. The findings would be a valuable reference for predicting final temperature of sintering, the equivalent strain during the sintering process, as well as optimizing the densification behavior.

The present contribution is focused on the relation preparation – structure – optical properties of hybrid silica and zirconia powders containing Eu(III) complexes: [Eu(ntac)₃][pphendcn] and [Eu(phen)₂](NO₃)₃. Methods for functionalization of silica and zirconia microparticles, based on adsorption of 1,10-phenantroline and [Eu(ntac)₃][pphendcn], and doping with [Eu(phen)₂](NO₃)₃ nanoparticles are proposed to obtain of red emitting hybrid composites with quantum efficiency 20 – 50 %. The optical properties of rare earth ions incorporated in silica and zirconia composites are used to explore the site symmetry (D₂, C_2v or lower) of the Eu³⁺ optical centers in the hybrid composites. Quantum yields of the investigated sol-gel micropowders and quantification of their optical spectra are presented.

Zirconia has recently become one of the most popular dental materials in prosthodontics being used in crowns, bridges, and to implants. However, weak bonding strength of dental adhesives and resins to zirconia surface has been a grand challenge in dentistry, thus finding a better adhesion to zirconia is urgently required. Marine sessile organisms such as mussels use a unique priming strategy to produce a strong bonding to wet mineral surfaces; one of the distinctive chemical features in the mussel’s adhesive primer proteins is high catechol contents among others. In this study, we pursued a bioinspired adhesion strategy, using a synthetic catechol primer applied to dental zirconia surfaces to study the effect of catecholic priming to shear bonding strength. Catechol priming provided a statistically significant enhancement (P < 0.05) in shear bonding strength compared to the bonding strength without priming, and relatively stronger bonding than commercially available zirconia priming techniques. This new bioinspired dental priming approach can be an excellent addition to the practitioner’s toolkit to improve dental bonding to zirconia.

Strategies followed to improve SBA-15 surface (essentially inert) included modifications by adding acidic or basic (or both) species during or after silica synthesis. Amphoteric properties are especially important as some reactions (alcohols dehydrations, for instance) require of both type of sites to efficiently take place. In this work, single Zr (nominal 3, 5 and 10 wt%, as ZrOCl2•8H2O) direct addition during SBA-15 synthesis was used to impart amphoteric characteristics (as determined by NH3 and CO2 TPD) to mesostructured SiO2 matrices. Additional materials characterization included textural (N2 physisorption) and structural (XRD, FTIR and UV-vis spectroscopies, and HRTEM as well) studies. Actual solids composition was also determined (EDS). Degree of Zr incorporation to mesoporous silica was enhanced with nominal content in binary formulations, although not necessarily integrated in SBA-15 walls forming Zr-O-Si linkages. It seemed that single ZrO2 domains (framework and extra-framework) could provide suitable amphoteric properties by significantly increasing number and strength of both acid and basic sites (especially formulation containing nominal 5 wt% Zr), as to those over mesostructured silica matrices. Also, potentially deleterious strong acid sites were avoided. The binary oxides present great potential to be applied in reactions requiring vicinal acid-basic pairs (alcohols dehydration, for instance).

Background: Our previous study revealed that the addition of pentavalent cations, such as niobium (Nb), to zirconia stabilized with trivalent cations, such as yttrium (Y), increased fracture toughness. However, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and opacity also increased undesirably. Thus, a novel surface treatment is required to enhance fracture toughness without changing the CTE and the translucency. Methods: The surfaces of pre-sintered 3-mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) and 4.2-mol% yttria-stabilized partially stabilized zirconia (4.2Y-PSZ) were treated with an Nb sol solution containing Nb2O5 nanoparticles. After drying and final sintering, a surface layer with high Nb content formed to a depth of approximately 1 mm. Results: Nb was equivalent to that of the bulk uniformly containing 1 mol% Nb2O5. The tetragonality of tetragonal zirconia near the surface increased with the addition of Nb, leading to improve fracture toughness in the surface layer and enhancing the fracture toughness of the entire specimen. However, the CTE and the translucency remained unchanged. Conclusions: The addition of pentavalent cations such as Nb, confined to the surface vicinity, improved fracture toughness without affecting the CTE and the translucency. By selectively adding Nb to the surface of weak parts of zirconia prosthesis, the overall strength can be improved, making it possible to produce highly reliable dental restorations.

Double-walled carbon nanotube-yttria-stabilized ZrO2 nanocomposites are prepared by a mixing route followed by Spark Plasma Sintering. Incorporation of carbon at contents higher than 2 wt.% results in significantly lower friction coefficients, both against alumina and steel balls. Double-walled carbon nanotubes improve wear resistance and reduce friction without severe damage, contrary to multi-walled carbon nanotubes.

Peri-implantitis continues to be one of the major reasons for implant failures. We propose a new approach for incorporating MTA into Zirconia implant surfaces with Nd:YAG laser and investigate the biological response of peri-implant cells as well as the microbiological response. Discs of Zirconia stabilized with Yttria and Titanium were produced according 4 tested groups: Nd:YAG laser textured Zirconia coated with MTA (Zr MTA); Nd:YAG laser textured Zirconia (Zr Textured); Zirconia and Titanium discs (Zr and Ti ). Contact profilometry was used to evaluate surface roughness. Human osteoblasts, gingival fibroblasts and S. oralis were cultured on samples. Cell adhesion and morphology, cell viability, cell differentiation markers and bacterial growth were assessed. Zr Textured roughness was significantly higher compared to all other groups. Cellular adhesion was observed at 1 day in all samples in both cell lines. Osteoblasts viability was lower in Zr MTA group, unlike fibroblasts viability was shown to be higher in Zr MTA group compared to Zr Textured group at 3 and 7 days. Osteocalcin and IL-8 release by osteoblasts were higher in Zr MTA. Zr Textured showed higher IL-8 values released by fibroblasts. No differences in S. oralis CFUs were observed between groups. The results suggest that Zirconia implant surfaces coated with MTA seems to promote fibroblasts proliferation and osteoblasts differentiation, however does not appear to have antibacterial properties.

The objective was to compare the failure loads of glass ceramic, and polymer crowns against yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) crowns with varying yttria concentrations. Monolithic crowns of zirconia (Cercon XT, Katana UTML, BruxZir Anterior), glass ceramic (Celtra press, IPS e.max press, Lisi press), and polymeric materials (Trilor, Juvora, Pekkton) were fabricated and cemented to epoxy abutments. The total number of specimens was 135 for crowns and 135 for discs (15 specimens per material type and design). A universal testing machine was used to perform compressive loading of all crowns to failure with a steel hemisphere along the longitudinal axis of the abutments. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to identify the concentration (mol% yttria-partially stabilized zirconia) for each zirconia brand. The data were analyzed using a generalized linear model and regression analysis. The results revealed significant differences (P < .05) in mean failure loads for different crown materials: Trilor (6811 ± 960 N) > Juvora (5215 ± 151 N) > Cercon (4260 ± 520 N) = BruxZir (4186 ± 269 N) = e.max (3981 ± 384 N) > Katana (3195 ± 350 N) = Lisi (3173 ± 234 N) = Pekkton (3105 ± 398 N) > Celtra (2696 ± 393 N). EDS showed that the zirconia materials contained yttria at different concentrations (BruxZir = 5Y-PSZ, Cercon = 4Y-PSZ, Katana = 3Y-PSZ). The yttria concentration had a significant effect on the failure load of the Katana (3Y-PSZ) crowns, which revealed lower failure loads than the Cercon (4Y-PSZ) and BruxZir (5Y-PSZ) crowns. New zirconia materials are provided with different yttria concentrations (3Y-, 4Y-, and 5Y-PSZ). Since a higher yttria concentration increases the translucency, clinicians should be aware that 4-5 wt% yttria-partially stabilized zirconia materials provide comparable or higher mechanical properties than e. max glass ceramic for dental application of crowns.

The study examined the effect of noninvasive crown retrieval/reuse process using erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser (Er:YAG). Twenty-six extracted human teeth were prepared for a crown. The crown was milled using lithium disilicate (LD) and zirconia (Z) materials, n=13 per group, 3 for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crown was luted using composite resin cement and subjected to a laser retrieval process. After the retrieval process, the crown was cleaned, recemented and laser-retrieved two more times, without and with additional tooth reduction mimicking clinical refreshment of dentin. Retrieval time and temperature were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Surface changes were observed through SEM. The retrieval times were 267.1±130.43, 220±79.09, 277.1±126.44, 368.4±136.14, 355±159.39, and 419.2±121.36 seconds for first, second, third LD and Z groups, respectively (p=.009). The maximal temperatures were 23.95.1±1.89°C, 24.86±2.01°C, 24.17±1.53°C, 22.88±1.51°C, 24.03±1.74°C, and 21.99±1.32°C for for first, second, third LD and Z groups, respectively (p=.006). Er:YAG laser crown removal is an effective retrieval tool for all-ceramic crowns. Minimal changes to teeth and crowns were observed following laser irradiation.

Ceria, zirconia and mixed cerium-zirconium mesoporous oxides were synthesized and used as supports for sulfur and gold species. The materials were characterised using selected advanced techniques (ICP-OES, elemental analysis, XPS, XRD, N₂ adsorption and desorption isotherms, UV-vis, ATR-FTIR, TPR-H₂, TG-DTA) which allowed monitoring of the oxidation state of metals (cerium and gold) and the surface properties of the catalysts, in particular the concentration of the components on the surface and in the bulk of materials. The interactions between gold, sulfur and metals from oxides were considered. The goal of this work was studied the changes in the chemical composition of materials and the oxidation states of cerium species after the modification of oxides with sulfur and gold species and the estimation of the influence of these changes on the surface properties. The chemical composition of surface affects the mobility of surface oxygen and the oxidation state of cerium, which can play the role of redox sites (e.g. Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ species), and therefore it strongly influences on the adsorption of hydrogen sulfide and then gold loading. Additionally, gold catalysts modified with sulfur species were tested in the reaction of glycerol oxidation in the liquid phase at basic conditions as the test reaction of the catalytic oxidation of organic pollutants from water.

Additive manufacturing (AM) processes, including stereolithography (SL), can fabricate complex ceramic parts layer by layer using computer-aided design (CAD) models. A ceramic slurry with high solid loading is usually used in SL to fabricate the desired shape, which is further sintered to produce the final part. The traditional SL system utilizes a tank filled with printable material, known as a vat, which for ceramic slurry contributes several limitations and operational difficulties, and further renders it non-recyclable mainly due to its high viscosity and the fragility of the green state. In this study, we utilized a continuous film supply (CFS) printer integrated with a tape casting system using in-house-designed ceramic slurry to print standard prototype specimens. Various printing parameters, including viscosity, layer thickness control, and slurry recycling efficiency, were studied. In addition, post-processing optimizations of the prototype, characterizations, and the microhardness of sintered samples were studied to determine their properties and compare them with traditional methods. The effectiveness of slurry reusability was demonstrated by printing with original and recycled slurry to produce consistent densification of final parts. Post-processing was optimized to achieve a relative sinter density of 99.02% and microhardness of 12.59 GPa. This method provides new opportunities to realize dense complex ceramic features with final properties comparable to those produced by subtractive machining and traditional SL. Furthermore, slurry recycling helps to reduce the overall cost and material consumption.

(1) Background: Prefabricated zirconia crowns are used to restore teeth in children. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the removal of these crowns with the erbium, chromium: yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser; (2) Methods: Twelve primary and 13 permanent teeth were prepared and prefabricated zirconia crowns were passively fitted and cemented with two resin modified glass-ionomer cements. Surface areas of prepared teeth and crowns were calculated. Crowns were removed using two laser settings: 4.5 Watts, 15 Hertz, 20 water/ 20 air, and 5 Watts, 15 Hertz, 50 water/50 air. The retrieval time and temperature changes were tested recorded. Data were analyzed using ANOVA with Tuckey’s adjusted post hoc pairwise comparison t-test; (3) Results: The average time for crown removal was: 3 minutes, 47.7 seconds for permanent; and 2 minutes 5 seconds for primary teeth. The mean temperature changes were 2.48℃ (SD=1.43) for permanent; and 3.14℃ (SD=1.88) for primary teeth. The time to debond was significantly positively correlated with tooth inner surface area and volume, outer crown volume, and the cement volume; (4) Conclusions: Use of the Er,Cr:YSGG laser is an effective, safe and non-invasive method to remove prefabricated zirconia crowns cemented with RMGI cements from permanent and primary teeth.

The effect of ceria doping of (ZrO2)1-x(Sm2O3)x crystals on their phase composition, microhardness and fracture toughness has been studied. The (ZrO2)0.995-х(Sm2O3)х(СеО2)0.005 crystals (where x = 0.032, 0.037 and 0.04) have been grown using directional melt crystallization in cold skull. The phase composition and structure of the crystals have been studied using X-ray diffraction, TEM and Raman spectroscopy. The mechanical properties such as microhardness and fracture toughness have been studied using Vickers indentation. It has been shown that the (ZrO2)0.995-х(Sm2O3)х(СеО2)0.005 solid solution crystals contain both Се4+ and Се3+ ions. Phase analysis data suggest that СеО2 doping increases the tetragonality degree of the transformable t phase and reduces the tetragonality degree of the non-transformable t' phase as compared to the (ZrO2)1-x(Sm2O3)x crystals. As a result, the t→m phase transition triggered by the indentation-induced stress in the СеО2 doped crystals is more intense and covers greater regions. СеО2 doping of the solid solutions increases the fracture toughness of all the crystals studied whereas the microhardness of the crystals changes but slightly. СеО2 doping of the (ZrO2)1-х(Sm2O3)х solid solutions in the experimental concentration range does not improve the high-temperature phase stability of the crystals and does not prevent high-temperature degradation of their fracture toughness.

This manuscript presents the result of utilizing cellulose as a template to prepare na-nosized WO3-NiWO4 and its application as co-catalysts in Pt/WO3-C and Pt/WO3-NiWO4-C for ethanol and glycerol electro-oxidation. Microcrystalline cellulose was hydrolyzed with phosphotungstic acid (H3PW12O40) to prepare the nanosized template of crystalline cellulose. Next, the template was impregnated with Ni(NO3)2, rendering a precursor mate-rial that is subsequently air-calcinated, removing the carbon-template material to obtain the nanometric WO3 and NiWO4. Elemental analysis confirmed the coexistence of nickel and tungsten, whereas the thermal analysis evidenced the high thermal stability of these materials. The X-ray diffractograms displayed crystal facets of WO3 and, when added Ni, of NiWO4. The transmission electron micrographs corroborated the formation of na-nosized particles with average particle sizes close to 50 nm. Finally, to apply this material, Pt/WO3-C and Pt/WO3-NiWO4-C were prepared and used in ethanol and glycerol electro-oxidation in alkaline medium, observing a promotional effect of the oxide and tungstate by reducing the onset potential and increasing the current density. These materials show great potential to produce clean electricity or green hydrogen contributing to energetic transition.

This work is devoted to the study of active and stable nickel catalysts for methane dry reforming based on Pr-doped ceria-zirconia obtained by solvothermal continuous method. The studies of physicochemical and catalytic properties of the 5%Ni\Ce0.75Zr0.25-xPrxO2 series showed that Pr introduction leads to an increase in the amount of highly reactive oxygen of the oxide lattice. Praseodymium-based catalysts showed significantly higher reactant conversions. In addition to the nature of support, the method of nickel introduction was also studied - Ni was added both by impregnation and one-pot with mixed oxide preparation. The method of Ni addition was shown to have significant effect on the morphology of the supported active component and, respectively, on the catalytic activity. The 5%Ni/Ce0.75Zr0.15Pr0.1O2 catalyst prepared by one-pot method showed stable operation in the MDR reaction for 30 hours at CO2 and CH4 conversions of ~40% and an H2 yield of ~18% (Т=700°С, τ=10ms).

Objective: To determine the effect of sandblasting before and after sintering on the surface roughness of zirconia and the micro-tensile bond strength of a pressable veneering ceramic to zirconia. Methods: Pre-sintered zirconia blocks (IPS e.max ZirCAD, Ivoclar Vivadent) were divided into a control group (CTR, no surface treatment) and four test groups of three specimens each: Pre-S-30, Pre-S-50, Pre-S-110 were sandblasted with 30µm SiO2, 50µm Al2O3 and 110µm Al2O3 particles respectively, before sintering, Post-S-30 was sandblasted with 30µm SiO2 after sintering. For each treatment, the surface roughness was measured (Ra, Perthometer M4P, Mahr Perthen). After sintering the zirconia blocks, a liner and a pressable ceramic (IPS e.max ZirPress, Ivoclar Vivadent) were fired. Sixteen micro-bars were obtained from each block and submitted to the micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS) test. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA. Any correlation between Ra and µTBS was evaluated (Sperman test). Results: Sandblasting before sintering with 110µm Al2O3 (Ra=3.44±0.44µm), 50µm Al2O3 (Ra=2.32±0.46µm), and 30µm SiO2 (Ra=1.22±0.22µm) resulted in significantly higher roughness than sandblasting after sintering with 30µm SiO2 (Ra=0.46±0.11µm). The highest µTBS was measured when the sintered zirconia was sandblasted with 30μm SiO2 (26.79±14.80 MPa), which was significantly different from that of specimens that were sandblasted before sintering (Pre-S-30=20.90±11.70; Pre-S-50=21.27±15.19; Pre-S-110=23.99±16.83) or were not treated (CTR=17.44±14.03). Conclusions: Sandblasting zirconia before sintering enhances the surface roughness proportionally to the particle size of the sand used. Sandblasting with 30µm SiO2 after sintering appeared to improve bonding between the veneering ceramic and zirconia. Clinical Significance: Sandblasting with 30µm SiO2 after sintering may improve bonding between veneering ceramics and zirconia, thus reducing ceramic fractures/chippings.

Preventing the occurrence of secondary caries serves as one of the significant issues in dental clinic, thus make it indispensable to improving the properties of conventional composite resin (CR) by developing a novel CR. In present study, two groups of experimental CRs loaded with different contents of fluoride-doped nano-zirconia fillers (25 wt% and 50 wt%) were fabricated. The surface topography, mechanical performance, fluoride release, antibacterial effect, aging property and cytotoxicity of the experimental CRs were evaluated subsequently. A uniform distribution of the F-zirconia fillers over the whole surface of resin matrix could be observed. The experimental CRs showed continuous fluoride release within 28 days, which was positively correlated with the content of F-zirconia fillers. Moreover, the amount of fluoride release increased in the acidic buffer. Addition of F-zirconia fillers could improve the color stability, wear resistance and microhardness of the experimental CRs, without reducing the flexure strength. Furtherly, the fluoride ions released continuously from the experimental CRs resulted in effective contact and antibacterial properties, while they showed no cytotoxicity. As a consequence, considerations can be made to employ this new kind of composite resin loaded with fluoride-doped nano-zirconia fillers to meet clinical requirements when the antimicrobial benefits are desired.

The aim of this study was to assess and contrast the effects on the vertical marginal fit of full contour CAD/CAM generated monolithic zirconia crowns pre- and post-cementation of employing chamfer finishing line designs with various occlusal reduction schemes (planar and flat) and cements. Material and Method: Forty sound human maxillary first premolars were selected for this study. Samples will be divided into two main groups of twenty samples in each group according to the occlusal reduction scheme: Group A: chamfer finishing line design with planar occlusal reduction scheme. Group B: chamfer finishing line design with flat occlusal reduction scheme. Each main group will be subsequently separated into two smaller groups based on the kind of cement that was utilized (n=10) Subgroup A1: crowns will be cemented by using resin-modified Glass Ionomer cement (Fuji Plus). Subgroup A2: crowns will be cemented using a Universal adhesive system (Duo Estecem II). Subgroup B1: crowns will be cemented by using Fuji Plus. Subgroup B2: crowns will be cemented using a Duo Estecem II. Result: Marginal gaps were measured at 4 indentations, using a Dino light-stereomicroscope (230X). Paired T-tests and student t-tests analyzed the data. Prior to cementation, subgroup A1 scored the lowest mean of vertical marginal gap values (80.284±23.021), while subgroup B2 scored the highest mean (118.597±9.956); following cementation, subgroup A1 scored the lowest mean of vertical marginal gap values (95.45±17.598), and subgroup B2 scored the highest mean of vertical marginal gap values (134.806 ±8.114). Chamfer finishing line design with a planar occlusal reduction scheme could be a preferable occlusal reduction scheme.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface texture and biofilm adhesion of veneered or CAD/CAM milled zirconia (partially stabilized with yttrium) after professional oral hygiene procedures. Samples (4x4 mm, thickness 2 mm; n = 72) were separated from zirconia blanks (3Y-TZP-LA). One group was veenired with ceramics and the other group of samples was CAD/CAM milled. Each group had 2 subgroups: polished and glazed. The samples were subjected to simulated strokes of professional brushing using abrasive paste and ultrasonic scaling. Parameters of surface micromorphology and receptivity to biofilm were calculated before and after simulating the given methods of professional maintenance of oral hygiene. The characteristics of zirconia surface were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Microbial bacterial/fungal species (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus sanguinis and Candida albicans) were used and cultured on the respective sterilized zirconia surfaces. The amount of biofilm formation on zirconia surface was quantified by colony forming unit (CFU) counts. Results: SEM analysis showed the greatest change in surface microtopography after the use of ultrasonic scaling, in glazed zirconia samples. Less formation of colonies on the surface CAD/CAM milled zirconia restorations was observed. Conclusion: Routine methods of professional maintenance of oral hygiene can damage the surface of glazed zirconia restorations.

In previous studies regarding the osseointegration of zirconia (ZrO2) implants, a lack of consistency was observed in the surface topographies of the ZrO2 and Ti samples because of the difficult processability of ZrO2 surfaces. To resolve this problem, we used the molecular precursor method (wet process), which is a surface-modifying technique that can easily change the surface chemistry without changing the surface topography. A roughened Ti surface was prepared using sandblasting (large-grit) and acid treatment. We were able to create ZrO2-coated Ti implants with the same topography as that of roughened Ti substrates using the molecular precursor method, which solution contained a Zr complex. The uniform presence of tetragonal Zr was confirmed, and the apparent zeta potential of the surface of the ZrO2-coated Ti implant was higher than that of Ti. In animal experiments, ZrO2-coated Ti implants showed an equivalent or higher bone-to-implant contact ratio compared to that of the non-coated implants inserted into the femur bone defects of the rats. ZrO2 with the same surface topography as that of roughened Ti exhibits a promotion of osteogenesis equivalent to or better than that of Ti in the early stages of bone formation.

Objective: CAD/CAM generated ceramic implant abutments have recently attracted interest due to their superior customization possibilities and aesthetic advantages. Despite their widespread clinical use, little information is currently available on their surface topography, however. The transmucosal portion of the abutment shoulder is of particular interest, as it ideally supports soft tissue but minimizes mechanical plaque retention. The aim of this in vitro study was to topographically characterize the trans- and subgingival roughness of CAD/CAM zirconia abutments from different manufacturers and compare them with zirconia stock abutments. Material and Method: The surface topography of eight CAD/CAM zirconia implant abutments (tests) and two prefabricated zirconia stock abutments (controls) was determined using focus variation microscopy. Two points on the abutment shoulder were subjected to profilometric examination. 2D and 3D parameters of roughness were obtained and compared. Results: The surface roughness of all the test abutments exceeded the recommended threshold of Ra = 0.2 µm and therefore exhibited an increased risk of mechanical plaque retention. Obvious differences in surface structure were apparent, allowing conclusions to be drawn about the manufacturing method and subsequent reworking processes. Conclusion: Manually reworking the trans- and submucosal area of the investigated CAD/CAM zirconia abutments appears necessary to fulfil the conditions for optimal surface topography. The Sa value as arithmetic mean, taking the maximum height (Sz value) and surface excess (Sdr) into account, is an essential parameter for assessing the surface topography of implant abutments.

For dental implant treatment to be successful, esthetics, functionality, and cleanability are all required of the superstructure, the final prosthesis. Screw fixation and cementation have been the conventional methods of choice for the crown prosthesis of implants, but these individual methods cannot fulfill all the requirements. As a solution to this problem, we have devised a new implant superstructure restoration method (inlay covering esthetic technique) using computer-aided design / computer-aided manufacturing inlays. This involves the placement of an inlay covering the access hole in a highly translucent partially stabilized zirconia crown. This technique expands the indications for implant treatment and improves the oral quality of life of patients.

The advent of zirconia ceramics with excellent mechanical, biomechanical and optical properties has made it an attractive metal-free substitute for titanium implants. Both animal and human studies have documented shortcomings with titanium implants. A review of the current literature on 3 iterations of zirconia implant designs has been challenging due to heterogeneous success data and limited follow-up. Zirconia implants hold promise for a new generation of dental implants, but technical developments are needed for design and material enhancements that will need to be validated by long-term rigorous studies.

The real-time monitoring of food freshness in refrigerators is of significant importance in detecting potential food spoiling and preventing serious health issues. One method that is commonly reported and has received substantial attention is the discrimination of food freshness by the tracking of volatile molecules. Nevertheless, the ambient environment of low temperature (normally below 4^oC) and high humidity (90% R.H.) as well as poor selectivity in sensing gas species remain the challenge. In this research, an integrated smart gas-tracking device is designed and fabricated. By applying pump voltage on the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) membrane, the oxygen concentration in the testing chamber can be manually tailored. Due to the working principle of the sensor following the mixed potential behavior, distinct differences in sensitivity and selectivity are observed for the sensor that operated at different oxygen concentrations. Typically, the sensor gives satisfactory selectivity to H₂S, NH₃, and C₂H₅OH at the oxygen concentrations of 10%, 30%, and 40%, respectively. In addition, an acceptable response/recovery rate (within 24 s) is also confirmed. Finally, a refrigerator prototype that includes the smart gas sensor is built, and satisfactory performance in discriminating food freshness status of fresh or semi-fresh is verified for the proposed refrigerator prototype. In conclusion, these aforementioned promising results suggest that the proposed integrated smart gas sensor could be a potential candidate for alarming food spoilage.

Fabrication of a true-3D inorganic ceramic with resolution down to nanoscale using sol-gel resist precursor is demonstrated. The method has an unrestricted free-form capability, control of the fill-factor, and high fabrication throughput. A systematic study of the proposed approach based on ultrafast laser 3D lithography of organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel resin followed by a heat treatment enabled formation of inorganic amorphous and crystalline composites guided by the composition of the initial resin. The achieved resolution of 100 nm was obtained for 3D patterns of complex free-form architectures. Fabrication throughput of 50×10³ voxels/s is achieved; voxel - a single volume element was recorded by a single pulse exposure. After a subsequent thermal treatment, ceramic phase was formed depending on the temperature and duration of the heat treatment as validated by Raman micro-spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed a gradual emergence of the crystalline phases at higher temperatures with a signature of cristobalite SiO₂, a high-temperature polymorph. Also, the tetragonal ZrO₂ phase known for its high fracture strength was observed. This 3D nano-sintering technique is scalable from nano- to millimeter dimensions and opens a conceptually novel route for optical 3D nano-printing of various crystalline inorganic materials defined by an initial composition for diverse applications for microdevices in harsh physical and chemical environments and high temperatures.

Precise monitoring of NOx concentrations in nitric oxide delivery systems is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of patients undergoing inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) therapy for pulmonary arterial hypertension. Currently, NOx sensing in commercialized iNO instruments predominantly relies on chemiluminescence sensors, which not only drives up costs but also limits their portability. Herein, we developed solid state gas sensors utilizing Ni-based sensing materials for effectively tracking the level of NO and NO2 in NO delivery system. These sensors comprised of NiO-SE or (NiFe2O4+30 wt.% Fe2O3)-SE vs. Mn-based RE demonstrated high selectivity towards 100 ppm NO under the interference of 10 ppm NO2 or 3 ppm NO2 under the interference of 100 ppm NO, respectively. Meanwhile, excellent stability, repeatability, and humidity resistance were also verified for proposed sensors. Sensing mechanisms were thoroughly investigated through assessments of adsorption capabilities and electrochemical reactivity. It turns out that the superior electrochemical reactivity of NiO towards NO, alongside with the NO2 favorable adsorption characteristics of (NiFe2O4 + 30 wt.% Fe2O3), is the primary reason for the high selectivity to NOx. These findings indicate a bright future for the application of these NOx sensors in innovative iNO treatment technologies.

Aseptic implant loosening after total joint replacement is partially influenced by material-specific factors when cobalt-chromium alloys are used, including osteolysis induced by wear- and corrosion products, and stress shielding. Here, we aim to characterize a hybrid material consisting of alumina-toughened zirconia ceramics (ATZ) and additively manufactured Ti-35Nb-6Ta (TiNbTa), joined by a glass solder. The structure of the joint, static and fatigue shear strength, the influence of accelerated aging, and the cytotoxicity using an elution assay with human osteoblasts is characterized. Furthermore, the biomechanical properties of functional demonstrators of a femoral component for total knee replacements are evaluated. TiNbTa-ATZ specimens showed a homogenous joint with statistical distributed micro-pores and a slight accumulation of Al-rich compounds at the glass solder-TiNbTa interface. The static shear strength was 26.4 ± 4.2 MPa (Ti-ATZ reference: 38.2 ± 14.4 MPa, p = 0.117), all specimens survived 107 cycles of shear loading to 10 MPa, and aging did not reduce the strength. TiNbTa-ATZ did not impair the proliferation and metabolic activity of human osteoblasts. Functional demonstrators of TiNbTa-ATZ provided a maximum bearable extension-flexion moment of 40.7 ± 2.2 Nm. Biomechanical and biological properties of TiNbTa-ATZ demonstrate potential application for endoprosthetic implants.

Time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) in the Terahertz (THz) frequency range is gaining in importance in nondestructive testing of dielectric materials. One application is the layer thickness measurement of a coating layer. To determine the thickness from the measurement data, the refractive index of the coating layer must be known in the surveyed frequency range. For perpendicular incidence of the radiation, methods exist to extract the refractive index from the measurement data itself without prior knowledge. This paper extends these methods for non-perpendicular incidence, where the polarization of the radiation becomes important. Furthermore, modifications considering effects of surface roughness of the coating are introduced. The new methods are verified using measurement data of a sample of Inconel steel coated with yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and with COMSOL simulations of the measurement setup. To validate the thickness measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the layer structure are used. The results show good agreement with an average error of 1% for the simulation data and under 4% for the experimental data compared to reference measurements.

In our study we investigated the additive manufacturing (AM) of ceramic-based Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) by the direct AM technology Thermoplastic 3D-Printing (T3DP). Zirconia components with a varying microstructure were additively manufactured by using thermoplastic suspensions with different contents of pore forming agents (PFA) and were co-sintered defect-free. Different materials were investigated concerning their suitability as PFA for the T3DP process. Different zirconia-based suspensions were prepared and used for AM of single- and multi-material test components. All samples were sintered defect-free and in the end we could realize a brick wall-like component consisting of dense (<1% porosity) and porous (approx. 5% porosity) zirconia areas to combine different properties in one component. The T3DP opens the door to AM of further ceramic-based 4D-components like multi-color or multi-material, especially multi-functional components.

Achieving the best aesthetic result is a key objective of implant-prosthetic therapy. To maximize the aesthetic outcome, ensuring that implant-supported restorations are in harmony with the peri-implant soft tissues and bone is essential. A comparative analysis of zirconia and titanium dental implants revealed that both materials offer high success rates; however, they present distinct advantages and limitations in clinical practice. Titanium implants, with surface modifications but without chemical composition changes, boast remarkable long-term survival. In contrast, zirconia implants, while presenting high aesthetic and biocompatibility qualities, have a relatively high incidence of material-specific failure, ranging from 4% to 2% after 5-10 years. While titanium implants generally show superior long-term performance, zirconia implants benefit from ongoing advancements aimed at improving their osseointegration and longevity. This study emphasizes the need for short-term and long-term studies, complemented by randomized controlled trials (RCTs), which are essential for optimizing implant materials and ensuring patient satisfaction. Continued innovation and research are crucial for advancing dental implant technology and enhancing the quality of life for patients requiring dental restorations. Finally, it is important to understand that all materials have both advantages and disadvantages, so the choice of the optimal material should be based on the specific purpose.
