Propolis is known to have many benefits, especially in the health sector. Due to the sharp aroma & taste, and the phenolic compounds contained in propolis are easily oxidized & hydrolyzed at high temperatures, the application of propolis in the food sector is still lacking. Microencapsulation with a coacervation complex is used to overcome these problems. The thickness of the coating material is an important factor in the microencapsulation of complex coacervation. This study aimed to determine the coating ratio used to produce propolis microcapsules with the highest phenolic stability during storage and heating. This study consisted of three treatment ratios of whey protein isolate (WPI) & pectin coating materials 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1. The results showed that the yield value ranged from 37.279-40.116%, aw 0.375-0.529, and encapsulation efficiency 85.45-96.44%. The color of the microcapsules produced was bright (L* = 94.28-95.35%), tended to be reddish (a* = 0.07-0.11) & yellowish (b* = 4.36-4.83). The difference in the ratios treatment significantly affected the storage stability, while the heating stability ratio only significantly affected the 2:1 treatment. The best total phenolic stability of propolis microcapsules during storage & heating was obtained by 1:1 treatment with retention values of 97.31% and 63.86%.

This study investigated the efficacy and safety of a propolis mangosteen extract complex (PMEC) on gingival health in patients with gingivitis and incipient periodontitis. A multi-centered randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 104 subjects receiving either PMEC or placebo for eight weeks was conducted. The primary focus was on changes in inflammatory biomarkers from gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), with clinical parameters as secondary outcomes. Results revealed that the PMEC group showed significantly reduced expression of all measured GCF biomarkers compared to the placebo group (p<0.0001) at 8 weeks, including substantial reductions in IL-1β, PGE2, MMP-8, and MMP-9 levels compared to baseline. While clinical parameters trended towards improvement in both groups, inter-group differences were not statistically significant. No significant adverse events were reported, indicating a favorable safety profile. These findings suggest that PMEC consumption can attenuate gingival inflammation and mitigate periodontal tissue destruction by modulating key inflammatory mediators in gingival tissue. Although PMEC shows promise as a potential adjunctive therapy for supporting gingival health, the discrepancy between biomarker improvements and clinical outcomes warrants further investigation to fully elucidate its therapeutic potential in periodontal health management.

The chemical composition of stingless bee honey and propolis depends on the plant sources they are derived from, and thus reflects the flora available in the vicinity of the hives, the preference of the bee species, and the climate (altitude and temperature). To understand the relative influence of these factors, we studied the composition of honey and propolis. Samples from 24 colonies were analyzed: 12 from each of two Scaptotrigona mexicana meliponiaries located in the state of Chiapas in southern Mexico approximately 8.5 km apart. The chemical composition of honey and propolis was studied using NMR, and GC-MS, respectively. Antioxidant activity of propolis was also studied. Chemometric analyses were applied. The Tuxtla Chico honey samples contained higher concentrations of glucose and fructose, while the Cacahoatán samples displayed a rich composition of di- and trisaccharides. These differences can be attributed to the distinct nectar sources utilized by the bees in each location. Propolis composition in the two locations also demonstrated qualitative differences, indicating a specific choice of resins by the bees. The observed substantial variations in the chemical composition of propolis and honey of S. mexicana from two relatively close locations support the assumption that bee species cannot be regarded as the most important factor determining their chemistry.

The aim of our work was to check if one of the products of natural origin, namely honey bee propolis may be an alternative or supplement to currently used antifungal agents. The activity of 50 ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEPs), harvested in Polish apiaries, was tested on a group of 69 clinical isolates of C. albicans. Most of the EEPs showed satisfactory activity, with minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFC) mainly in the range of 0.08-1.25% (v/v). Eradication of biofilm from polystyrene microtitration plates in 50% (MBEC50) required concentrations in the range of 0.04% (v/v) to more than 1.25% (v/v). High activity was also observed in eradication of biofilm formed by C. glabrata and C. krusei on the surfaces of PVC and silicone catheters. EEPs at subinhibitory concentrations inhibited yeast-to-mycelia morphological transformation of C. albicans in liquid medium and mycelial growth on solid medium. A synergistic effect was observed for the action of EEPs in combination with fluconazole (FLU) and voriconazole (VOR) against C. albicans. In the presence of EEP at concentration as low as 0.02%, the MICs of FLU and VOR were 256 to 32 times lower in comparison to those of the drug alone. Evidences for the fungal cell membrane as the most probable target of EEPs are presented.

Propolis is a bee product widely used as a dietary supplement and included in sweets or baby foods due to its well-known antioxidant and nutritional properties that are directly correlated with its phenolic composition. For this reason, this study analysed the total contents of flavones and flavonols, flavanones and dihydroflavonols, and the antioxidant capacity by using the methods of ABTS and linoleic acid/β-carotene in 99 samples of propolis from Spain and Chile. A rapid method was developed for quantifying these parameters in raw propolis using near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy with an optical fibre probe of remote reflectance applied directly to the ground up sample. The models developed allow the determination of the total of flavones and flavonols (0-183 mg rutin/ g propolis), of the total of flavanones and dihydroflavonols (9-109 mg pinocembrin/ g propolis extract), and the antioxidant capacity by the ABTS method (0-3212 nmolesTrolox/ mg of propolis) and of linoleic acid/β-carotene (22-86% inhibition). The NIR spectroscopy models were applied in external validation to different samples of the calibration group, which led to the conclusion that the methods developed provide significantly identical data to the initial chemical data of reference.

The structure of wound dressing materials presents one of the most relevant characteristics for effective skin tissue repair. Electrospinning is a common technique used to produce polymeric fibres that can mimic fibrillar disposition of skin extracellular matrix, favouring cell migration, and thus regeneration of the damaged tissue. Moreover, beads, also known as by-products of electrospinning, have potential as reservoirs for sustained drug release. Processing parameters, such as molecular weight and viscosity of the polymer solution, can affect the desirable morphologies of electrospun films. Thereby, this work had the purpose of producing and characterized electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) mats loaded with propolis, a popular extract in traditional medicine with potential for skin repair aid. Films with different morphologies were obtained depending on the storage period of the solution prior to the lectrospinning, probably due to the PCL hydrolysis. FTIR analyses of the extract confirmed propolis composition. GPC and viscosity analyses demonstrated that the decrease in molar mass over the storage period was responsible for nanostructure diversity. Propolis acts as a lubricant agent, affecting the spun solutions' viscosity and the thermal properties and hydrophilicity of the films. All films are within the value range of the water vapour transpiration rate of the commercial products. The presence of beads did not affect the propolis release pattern. However, "in vitro" wound healing assay showed that propolis-loaded films composed by beaded fibres increased the cell migration process. Thus, it can be inferred that these films presented the potential for wound dressing application.

The knowledge in chemical composition of propolis is crucial for understanding the characteristics of products of different origin, but also for quality control and regulatory purposes. To date, offical monographs or official analyses that allow to evaluate propolis in a proper way have not yet been released. This study focuses on the characterization of twenty-seven Italian propolis and the identification of chemical markers that define its geographical provenance. Total polyphenol (TP) and total flavonoid (TF) content, alongside the quantification of pinocembrin, chrysin, galangin, and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), were identified as as potential markers. Additionally, DPPH assays was conducted to evaluate antiradicalic activity of propolis samples. Our findings demonstrated that TP, TF and pinocembrin differed in propolis of different origin, especially in samples from the islands. However, the quantification of the sum of chrysin and galangin and CAP provided a clear distinction of the geographical origin of the propolis samples. In contrast, the DPPH assay did not prove useful for this purpose, as most results were similar and, therefore, not significant. This study lays the groundwork for future research on propolis. These findings could contribute to the development of more refined methods for distinguishing propolis origins, enhancing the understanding, valuation and quality control of this natural product in various applications.

The study investigated the chemical and functional characterization of propolis collected in southern Italy, in particular in Basilicata, a region rich in ecological and vegetative biodiversity. Sixteen samples of propolis, collected within a radius of 40 km from each other in the Basilicata region, showed significant differences between the chemical and functional parameters investigated: color index (L*, a*, b*; P<0.05), variation in chemical composition and antioxidant activities, by ABTS and FRAP assays. In general, Lucanian propolis had a low content of waxes (P<0.05) and a high content of resin (P<0.05) and balsams (P<0.05). The content of total phenolic compounds and flavonoids were highly variable, as was the biological capacity. In conclusion, Lucanian propolis showed a remarkable variability, highlighting a significant diversification according to the geographical position and the diversity of the flora surrounding the apiary of which the bees use as a source of resin. This study therefore contributes to the enhancement of the quality of propolis, laying the foundations for the production and marketing of propolis not only in the food industry, but also in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

The main goal of this research is to create biocompatible hydrogels using gelatin and a double cross-linking technique involving both covalent and ionic bonds to immobilize propolis. Covalent bonds are formed through Schiff base cross-links between protein-free amino groups (NH2) from the lysine residue and aldehyde groups (CHO) produced by oxidizing sodium alginate with NaIO4, while the ionic bonds are achieved using Mg2+ ions. Hydrogel films were obtained by varying the molar ratios -CHO/NH2 under different pH conditions (3.5 and 5.5). The presence of aldehyde groups in the oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) was confirmed using FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. The oxidation degree was monitored over 48 hours, and the influence of temperature was examined. Results showed that higher -CHO/-NH2 molar ratios led to increased conversion index values of NH2 groups, and a decrease in swelling degree values was observed in mediums with pH of 5.5 and 7.4. The encapsulation and release efficiency of propolis decreased with the increase of the hydrogel cross-linking degree. UV irradiation enhanced the antioxidant activity of both free and encapsulated propolis. These findings offer valuable insights into designing biocompatible hydrogels for propolis immobilization, with potential for controlled release in biomedical and pharmaceutical fields.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the potential of poplar-type propolis for wound healing by analyzing its phytochemical profile and biological effects. Methods: The phytochemical characterization included specific colorimetric assays to estimate the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and the triterpenoids content. Some of the main components of poplar propolis (pinocembrin, pinobanksin, CAPE, chrysin, galangin) were analyzed using HPLC-DAD. Scavenging activity and total antioxidant capacity were assessed through DPPH and ORAC assays, respectively. Biological in vitro assays used keratinocyte, fibroblast, and monocytic cell lines. The direct wound healing properties were tested through scratching assays and ELISA kits for the assessment of the production of growth factors (FGF-7, Latency Associated Peptide - LAP), while the indirect effects were evaluated through the estimation of the levels of MMP9, IL-1β, IL-8 and TNF-α using ELISA kits together with a cell-free test on the inhibition capacity on collagenases. During the study, the Network Pharmacology analysis was employed to further explore possible mechanisms of action of propolis on the healing process. Results: The analyses confirmed the high phenolic content of poplar propolis, dominated by flavonoids, and terpenes. Propolis exhibited significant antioxidant activity and interestingly, propolis showed indirect wound-healing properties by mitigating inflammation and remodeling (reduced IL-1β and MMP9) and potentially modulating the immune response (upregulated IL-8). In vitro studies confirmed these effects, demonstrating decreased MMP9 production and collagenase inhibition when cells were co-treated with propolis and a stressor. Propolis also suppressed IL-1β release in fibroblasts, although its impact on TNF-α was inconclusive. Notably, co-treatment upregulated IL-8 in monocytes, suggesting a potential immunomodulatory role. Conclusion: poplar propolis may not directly stimulate cell proliferation during wound healing, while its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties could suggest an indirect contribution to the process.

This work demonstrates the antimycotic activity and structural damage of stingless bee propolis against Malassezia pachydermatis,causative agent of canine otitis.Two propolis ethanolic extracts(EEP) derived from the stingless bees, Scaptotrigona mexicana and Tetragonisca angustula were tested against three clinical strains of Malassezia pachydermatis and one of reference (ATCC 14522). Each ethanolic extract of propolis was analyzed by Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry(GC-MS). Antimycotic activity was evaluated by plate microdilution. To evaluate the induced changes in yeasts, by fluorescence microscopy, stains were performed with chalcofluor white and propidium iodide. For both propolis, sesquiterpenes were the main components determined by GC-MS. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 32 mg/mL and a minimum fungicidal concentration of 64 mg/Ml were determined in both extracts. EPP of Scaptotrigona mexicana and Tetragonisca angustula caused significant damage to yeast morphology. Propidium iodide penetration was observed, indicating damage to the yeast and with calcofluor-white stain, only morphology deformation was observed..The antimycotic activity and structural damage of propolis from Scaptotrigona mexicana and Tetragonisca angustula against Malassezia pachydermtais was demonstrated .This probably being the first scientific report that demonstrates structural damage in Malassezia pachydermatis of Mexican stingless bee propolis

Bee products have a millennial tradition in human use due to their numerous heal-ing properties. The paper presents the chemical characterization, antioxidant, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory potential of royal jelly, apilarnil and propolis. These were obtained in the Banat area, Romania, in 2022. Royal jelly and apilarnil were analyzed in pure and lyophilized form and propolis in pure form and tincture. The percentage of moisture, dry matter, pH, acidity, content of impurities, sugars, proteins, ash, macro and micro minerals, total amino acids, polyphenols and flavo-noids were studied. The samples analyzed by us have a very well developed antiox-idant and according to the analysis of the mineral content of beekeeping products, an increased variability of macro and microminerals was determined, but also the lack of Pb in their composition. The flavonoid content of the samples was between 2.61519 mg QE/g sample for commercial pure apilarnil and 279.56115 mg QE/g sample for propolis harvested in 2021, and that of polyphenols between 0.63507 mg QE/g sample for natural royal jelly and 42.82186 mg QE/g sample in propolis with harvest in 2021. Propolis acts as a good antimicrobial and antiinflammatory agent, a fact that deserves to be researched in detail and exploited as a product with an ap-itherapeutic role for various microbial and inflammatory conditions.

Background: Endocrine conditions that impact women define polycystic ovary syndrome. Previous studies have demonstrated a connection between PCOS and insulin intolerance, oxidative stress, and immune system dysfunction. Additionally, some reports have indicated that propolis has antioxidant properties and that chitosan nanoparticles have beneficial effects on the reproductive system. The goal of the present study is to compare metformin (Met) to chitosan-propolis nanoparticles and explain how they protect against a rat PCOS model caused by estradiol valerate (EV). (as a control treatment). Methods: In order to cause PCOS in rodents, a single subcutaneous injection of estradiol valerate was used, followed by a 42-day oral administration of 500 mg/kg of chitosan-propolis nanoparticles. Four sets of rats were created: the control, PCOS, metformin (PCOS and 150 mg/kg metformin), and chitosan-propolis nanoparticle (PCOS and 500 mg/kg chitosan-propolis nanoparticle) groups. The histopathological examination of the ovaries and measurement of serum ferctors were performed on all of the animals. Estradiol valerate caused PCOS, but chitosan-propolis nanoparticle therapy reversed it. Results: After chitosan-propolis nanoparticle intervention, the body weight and ovarian morphology had improved, and the serum biochemical parameters, including esretogen, progestron, vitamin D, calcium, and the insulin resistance index, had been corrected. These EV-induced changes include decreased SOD activity, elevated MDA levels, and evidence that oxidative stress was increased by EV when chitosan-propolis nanoparticle/Met were administered for 42 straight days. Additionally, certain relative mRNA transcripts, including those for the MCP, IL18, and CRP genes, were markedly upregulated in EV-treated animals. These findings unequivocally demonstrate the beneficial effects of chitosan-propolis nanoparticles/Met in inflammatory disorders. Conclustion: Together, the study's end findings, which are presented here, are consistent with the hypothesis that chitosan-propolis nanoparticle/Met offered protective activity against the harmful effects of EV. Although ameliorative effects may have been implicated, the primary pathway or pathways still need to be clarified.

Different products from a unique Propolis extract, Propolis (bee glue), an of resinous consistency produced by bees, has been used as indigenous medicine for the treatment of several diseases in some contrary. Safety assessment of propoils extracts with respect to antimicrobial activity against three bacterial isolates, Proteus Mirabilis , Klebsiella Pneumonia and Staphylococcus Qureus.The result showed that the main composition of the extract was Anthraquinone, the last one was responsible for the biological activity of the extract. FT-IR, UV results showed more than eight peaks for represent the main fine composition of the extract. The present study also showed that the extract has antibacterial activity against three bacterial isolates

The modification of cellulose woven fabrics and viscose nonwovens was carried out with the aim of preparing sustainable coatings from biodegradable natural polymers. The modification of fabrics with biodegradable natural polymers represents an ecological alternative to other textile modifications such as the sol-gel process. Coatings were prepared from erythritol, gelatin and collagen in various formulations with the addition of propolis and alginate fibers and a natural plasticizer (glycerin). The morphology of the materials was determined before and after modification with Dino-lite, the pH value, the drop test method, the angle recovery angle, the thickness and the mass per unit area. The modifications have no significant effect on the thickness and mass per unit area, in a larger proportion they show hydrophilic properties, which favours the application for medical purposes - for example the absorption of exudates, wound dressings etc. Due to the neutral and slightly alkaline pH value of the modified samples, they are suitable for external application on the skin. The recovery angle of the modified samples proves that the samples do not tend to crease and that they retain their elasticity after modification and have a pleasant textile feel (fabric hand).

Propolis was widely used in health preservation and disease healing, it contains many ingredients. The previous study had been revealed that the propolis has a wide range of efficacy, such as antiviral, immune enhancement, anti-inflammatory and so on, but its antiviral components and underlying mechanism of action remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the chemical composition, and anti-PPV and immunological enhancement of Propolis Flavonoid(PF). Chemical composition of PF was distinguished by UPLC-Q/TOF-MS/MS analysis.The presence and characterized of 26 major components was distinguished in negative ionization modes.To evaluate the effects of PF used as adjuvant on the immune response porcine parvovirus (PPV). Thirty Landrace-Yorkshire hybrid sows were randomly assigned to 3 groups, and the sows in adjuvant groups were intramuscular injected PPV vaccine with 2.0 mL PF adjuvant (PA), oilemulsion adjuvant (OA), respectively. After that, serum hemagglutination inhibition antibody titers, IgM and IgG subclasses, eripheral lymphocyte proliferation activity, and concentrations of cytokines were measured. Results indicated an enhancing effect of PA on IgM, IL-2, IL-4, IFN-γ and the IgG subclass responses. These findings suggested that PA could significantly enhance the immune responses. Furthermore, we screened the chemical components the effective of anti-PPV, Ferulic acid have an excellently anti-PPV effective.

Previous research has shown that propolis has immunomodulatory activity. Extracts from two UK propolis samples were assessed for their anti-inflammatory activities by investigating their ability to alter the production of the cytokines tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6 and IL-10 from mouse bone marrow derived macrophages co-stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The propolis extracts suppressed secretion of IL-1β and IL-6 with less effect on TNFα. In addition, propolis reduced the levels of nitric oxide formed by LPS-stimulated macrophages. Metabolomic profiling was carried out by liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) on a ZIC-pHILIC column. LPS increased the levels of intermediates involved in nitric oxide biosynthesis; propolis lowered many of these. Also, LPS produced an increase in itaconate and citrate and propolis treatment increased itaconate still further while greatly reducing citrate levels. Moreover, LPS treatment increased levels of GSH and intermediates in its biosynthesis while propolis treatment boosted these still further. In addition, propolis treatment greatly increased levels of UDP-sugar conjugates. Overall, the results showed that propolis extracts exert an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines and by metabolic reprogramming of LPS activity in macrophages.

Ethanolic extracts of propolis collected from Apis mellifera hives have been shown to reduce Nosema ceranae infection in honey bee workers. This study aimed to determine the propolis concentration that optimizes the control of N. ceranae infection in honey bee workers. Newly emerged worker bees were individually fed 2 μL of 50% sucrose solution (w/v) containing 105 N. ceranae spores per bee, and treated with 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% ethanolic extracted propolis in 50% sucrose solution (v/v). The treated bees were maintained in cages at 34 ± 2˚C and 55 ± 5% RH throughout the study. The number of dead bees was counted and removed from the cages daily for 30 days to generate survival curves. The number of N. ceranae spores per bee (infectivity) was quantified using a hemocytometer, and the number of infected bees per hundred bees (infection rate) was determined. The survival rates of N. ceranae infected bees fed 25%, 50%, and 75% propolis (NP1, NP2, NP3, respectively) were significantly higher than those of infected bees not fed propolis (NO). Furthermore, the infectivity and infection rates of NP2 and NP3 groups were significantly lower than those of the NO group. The infectivity and infection rates of the NP1 group were not different than those of the NO group. Our data suggest that 50% and 75% propolis extracts are appropriate concentrations for treating N. ceranae infection in honey bees. Ethanolic extracted propolis can be an alternative treatment for N. ceranae infection in Western honey bees.

The purpose of this investigation was to prepare a water-soluble complex by encapsulation of propolis extract with the carrier 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and to examine the influence of in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion (GID) on the content of the main polyphenolic groups when administered as aqueous suspension. The research was conducted on two continental samples of propolis from Croatia and a mixture of selected polyphenol standards. By applying UAE followed by a lyophilization procedure, it was possible to obtain a powder with a high content of polyphenols. The content of total phenols (TPs), total flavonols/flavones (TFFs) and total flavanones/dihydroflavonols (TFDs) in the fractions of oral and gastric phase and small intestinal phase performed with two models: centrifugation and dialysis through a semi-permeable membrane, was determined by three UV/Vis spectrophotometric methods: Folin-Ciocalteu, aluminium complexation and 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine method. The obtained results for both propolis complexes showed stability in the polyphenol content and high bioaccessibility during all three phases of digestion. The bioaccessibility of TPs, TFFs and TFDs under in vitro conditions after dialysis through a semipermeable membrane was lower compared to the intestinal phase model with centrifugation.

1) Background: Studies indicate that caffeic acid (CA), caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) are compounds with potent chemopreventive effects. Breast cancer is a common cancer among women worldwide. The study shows comparison of caffeic acid and its ester activity in the cells of breast cancer line MDA-MB-231; 2) Methods: The cells of MDA-MB-231 were treated by CA and CAPE with doses from 10 to 100 µM in time 24 h and 48 h. Cytotoxicity MTT test, apoptosis by Annexin V and cell cycle with Dead Cell Assay were performed; 3) Results: The cytotoxic activity was greater for CAPE comparing to CA, in both incubation time (same dosage). IC50 values for CAPE were 27.84 (24h) and 15.83 (48h) and >10000 (24h) and >1000 (48h) for CA. Polyphenols induced apoptosis, higher apoptotic effect observed for CAPE (dose dependent). CAPE induced cell cycle arrest in S phase (time and dose dependent). Dose dependent decline G0/G1 phase (48h) and elimination of phase G2/M (100 µM of CAPE). For CA, only after 48 hours, small effect of cell cycle at phase S (however dose dependent), and slight decline of phase G0/G1 and G2/M only for highest doses (50 and 100 µM); 4) Conclusions: Comparing CA and CAPE activity, on the MDA-MB-231, we clearly see better activity of CAPE, with the same dosage and experiment time.

Propolis, or bee glue, is a complex mixture of resins from plant buds and flowers, wax, pollen and bee saliva. It also contains various vitamins, essential oils, mineral salts, trace elements, hormones and enzymes. It has been found that propolis possesses antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. We have studied the antiviral activity of six extracts of Bulgarian propolis collected from six districts of Bulgaria. The study was conducted against structurally different viruses: Human coronavirus strain OC-43 (HCoV OC-43) and Human respiratory syncytial virus type 5 (HRSV-5) (enveloped RNA viruses), Human herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) (enveloped DNA virus), Human rhinovirus type 14 (HRV-14) (non-enveloped RNA virus) and Human adenovirus type 2 (HadV-2) (non-enveloped DNA virus). The influence of the extracts on the internal replicative cycle of viruses was determined using the cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibition test. The virucidal capacity, their influence on the adsorption stage and their protective effect on uninfected cells were also determined by the end-point dilution method. Residual viral infectivity in propolis samples was compared to untreated controls and Δlgs were calculated. When administered during viral replication, most propolis extracts demonstrated the strongest activity against HCoV OC-43. The influence of propolis extracts on the viability of extracellular virions was expressed to a different degree in the various viruses studied, and the effect was significantly stronger in those with an envelope. Almost all extracts significantly inhibited the step of herpes virus adsorption to the host cell, and some of them showed a protective effect on healthy cells before they were subjected to herpes infection. Our results enlarge the knowledge about the action of propolis and could open new perspectives for its application in viral infections treatment.
