The DEP force is usually calculated from the object’s point of view using the interaction of the object’s induced dipole moment with the inducing field. Recently, we described the DEP behavior of high- and low-conductive 200-µm 2D spheres in a square 1x1mm chamber with a plane-versus-plane electrode configuration from the system’s point of view. Here we extend our previous considerations to the plane-versus-plane and pointed-versus-pointed electrode configurations. The trajectories of the sphere center and the corresponding DEP forces were calculated from the gradient of the system’s overall energy dissipation for given starting points. The dissipation’s dependence on the sphere’s position in the chamber is described by the numerical “conductance field”, which is the DC equivalent of the capacitive charge-work field. While the plane-versus-plane electrode configuration is field-gradient free without an object, the presence of the highly or low-conductive spheres generates structures in the conductance fields, which result in very similar DEP trajectories. For both electrode configurations, the model describes trajectories with multiple endpoints, watersheds, and saddle points, very high attractive and repulsive forces in front of pointed electrodes, and the effect of mirror charges. Because the model accounts for inhomogeneous polarization within the objects, the approach allows the modeling of the complicated interplay of attractive and repulsive forces near electrode surfaces and chamber edges. Non-reversible DEP forces or asymmetric magnitudes for the highly and low-conductive spheres in large areas of the chamber indicate the presence of higher-order moments, mirror charges, etc.

The increased focus on sustainability in response to climate changes has given rise to many new initiatives to meet the rise in building load demand. The concept of distributed energy resources (DER) and optimal control of supply to meet power demands in buildings have resulted in growing interest to adopt microgrids for a precinct or a university campus. In this paper, a model for an actual physical microgrid has been constructed in OPAL-RT for real-time simulation studies. The load demands for SIT@NYP campus and its weather data are collected to serve as input to run on the digital twin model of DERs of the microgrid. The dynamic response of the microgrid model in response to fluctuations in power generation due to intermittent solar PV generation and load demands are examined via real-time simulation studies and compared with the response of the physical assets. It is observed that the simulation results match closely to the performance of the actual physical asset. As such, the developed microgrid model offers plug-and-play capability which will allow power providers to better plan for on-site deployment of renewable energy sources and energy storage to match the expected building energy demand.

Recently, the environment is being put under constantly increasing pressure. Globally, water shortage is considered as one of the most serious environmental problems which affect human life and plant wealth. Iraq is highly affected by water deficit in many regions. In particular, Al-Najaf region is selected to be under evaluation for the current and future water resources shortage. This study is based on the collected data for rainfall, evaporation, flow-rate, groundwater, water needed for irrigation, and daily uses for the period between 2000 and 2018. The Artificial Neural Network, normal distribution, and lognormal distribution type III are applied for analyzing the collected data in addition to predict the water shortage for year 2050. Results show a water shortage in years 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2017 only for the selected period. A Simulink model is constructed using Matlab to increase the credibility of the estimated results and gives accurate results for the groundwater and surface water needed. Where in 2050, it is found that it needs to use the groundwater source by 0.024 x 10⁹ m³ to support the surface water source which is represented by the Euphrates River. The study shows the extent of inefficient management of water resources in Al-Najaf region.

In two previous papers, we calculated the dielectrophoresis (DEP) force and corresponding trajectories of high- and low-conductance 200-µm 2D spheres in a square 1x1mm chamber with plane-versus-pointed, plane-versus-plane and pointed-versus-pointed electrode configurations by applying the law of maximum entropy production (LMEP) to the system. Here, we complete these considerations for configurations with four-pointed electrodes centered on the chamber edges. The four electrodes were operated in either object-shift mode (two adjacent electrodes opposite the other two adjacent electrodes), DEP mode (one electrode versus the other three electrodes), or field-cage mode (two electrodes on opposite edges versus the two electrodes on the other two opposite edges). As in previous work, we have assumed DC properties for the object and the external media for simplicity. Nevertheless, every possible polarization ratio of the two media can be modeled this way. The trajectories of the spherical centers and the corresponding DEP forces were calculated from the gradients of the system’s total energy dissipation, described by numerically-derived conductance fields. In each of the three drive modes, very high attractive and repulsive forces were found in front of pointed electrodes for the high and low-conductance spheres, respectively. The conductance fields predict bifurcation points, watersheds, and trajectories with multiple endpoints. The high and low-conductance spheres usually follow similar trajectories, albeit with reversed orientations. In DEP drive mode, the four-point electrode chamber provides a similar area for DEP measurements as the classical plane-versus-pointed electrode chamber.

This paper presents an analysis of the power flow within the Northern Interconnected Grid of Cameroon. The Newton-Raphson method has been performed, known for its accuracy, under MATLAB software, to model and solve complex power flow equations. This study simulates a series of outage scenarios to evaluate the responsive-ness of the grid. The results obtained underline the crucial importance of reactive power management and highlight the urgent need to consolidate the grid infrastructure of North Cameroon. To increase grid resilience and stability, the paper recommends the strategic integration of renewables and the development of interconnections with other power grids. These measures are presented as viable solutions to meet cur-rent and future energy distribution challenges, ensuring a reliable and sustainable power supply for Cameroon.

The inverse system identification toolbox named INVSID 1.0 for MATLAB, which is used to identify the inversion of single-input single-output systems, is developed. The complete process of developing the toolbox is demonstrated. Afterwards, a numerical example is illustrated to describe how the toolbox can be used to solve inverse identification problems. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the toolbox.

Abstract: Petrol is considered the most common fire accelerant. However, the identification and classification of petrol sources through the years has been proven to be a challenging field in the investigation of fire debris analysis. This research explored the possibility of identifying petrol sources by high field NMR methods accompanied by ML (Machine Learning). The automated identification and classification of petrol brands were achieved for first time based on the ML clas-sification model developed in this research. A hierarchical classification model was constructed using local classifiers to categorize neat or weathered petrol into its sources.

Introduction: EEGLAB is one of the most famous software for processing, analyzing, and researching experiments that have Electroencephalography (EEG) datasets. Due to the numerous and famous add-ins along with global, widespread communications and online free training, its popularity increased every year. Method: To address this phenomenon from a bibliographic perspective, we found 20,464 citations in Google Scholar for the main EEGLAB reference since 8/27/2023. Then, only the Web of Science (WOS) articles were 12,700 that they were extracted. The results were analyzed with Bibliometrix package from CRAN R software. Results: The time span of these articles is from 2004 to 2023 with 12,700 documents in 1,125 sources (journals, books, etc.), 29,125 authors, 19,062 author’s keywords, 13,707 keywords PLUS, 279,617 references. The annual growth rate is 28.12 %, international Co-authorship is 37.27 % and Co-authors per document is s 4.89 and the average citations per document is 22.51. The most relevant sources are Neuroimage, Frontiers in Human Neurosciences, Scientific Reports, Psychophysiology, and PLOS One with 780, 526, 446,425, and 371 articles, respectively. The most cited countries are the USA, Germany, and the United Kingdom with 93,093, 32,621, and 20,748 total citations, respectively. The ERPLAB, ADJUST, and ICLabel add-ins have the local to global citation ratios equal to 85.4%, 65.1%, and 78.2% respectively. Other bibliometric analyses such as co-occurrence networks and thematic maps of abstracts, titles, and keywords are estimated and presented. Conclusions: EEGLAB is among the most cited MATLAB toolboxes in computational neuroscience. Many developed and developing countries use it in their research publications.

The vast rise in the number of Internet-connected devices necessitates a more accessible spectrum. As a result, Cognitive Radio was already proposed as a solution to the problem of restricted spectrum resources by utilizing available spectrum which is assigned to primary users. This method allows the secondary user to utilize the spectrum whenever the primary user is not using it, and it does so without intruding with the primary user. Whenever the secondary user detects the spectrum, it faced some issues, such as complexity in sensing leading to a lack of noise value, and the primary user is hidden to all secondary users. In order to tackle these challenges, an adaptive threshold matched filter detector and a cooperative matched filter detector are utilized in this paper to detect the spectrum. The probability of detection (Pd), probability of miss detection (Pm), and probability of false alarm (Pf) are the metrics used to assess sensing accuracy. To simulate suggested detectors, the MATLAB R2020a software was utilized. In comparison to earlier studies, the simulation conclusions reveal that the detection process starts with lower SNR values.

With the widespread use of mobile phones, increasing use of mobile applications in different areas of life have gained a large place. Between the reasons of the preference of the rapid increasing number of apps in the application markets of the different platforms, the aesthetic appereance of the icons that apps have perhaps the most important one. In this study, the visual symmetrical side of the icons of the most downloaded apss which are developed for preparing to Public Servant Exam in Turkey is emphasized. Two different types of data are obtained with working on the icons with image processing technique by using Mathworks Matlab program and survey method which is applied on Korkut Ata University students. By comparing the obtained data with the binary logistic regression method, it was determined that the visual symmetry in the apps’ icons partially contributed to the aesthetic appreciation.

The fetal heart rate (FHR) is a screening signal for preventing fetal hypoxia during labor. When experts analyze this signal, they have to position a baseline and then identify decelerations and accelerations. These steps can potentially be automated and made more objective by signal processing analysis. Various methods have been described in the literature but there are no open-source programs for performing these steps. The MATLAB toolbox presented here comprises a standard signal pre-processing function, 11 re-coded literature methods for fetal heart rate analysis, a signal viewer (enabling annotation by an expert) and an evaluation procedure with various criteria measuring intrarater agreement.

The pneumatic muscle is an actuator well known for its inherited compliance. In the last years, there have been a lot of applications of these actuators, mainly oriented toward medical devices. However, there are few papers that use muscle as a model associated with mechanical structures. These actuators are difficult to control because their stiffness depends on the applied pressure, determining a non-linear behavior. This article presents a model, created in Matlab, considering the muscle as a kinematic structure. The model is simulated as an individual structure and a PID controller is applied to test the response. Then, these results are validated by experimental tests done in the laboratory on different types of muscles. Comparison results validate the accuracy of the model.

Bamboo is the building material of the past and future. It offers numerous properties that make it versatile for various applications, including construction. Its impressive strength-to-weight ratio enables it to bear substantial loads and stresses, while its good elasticity allows efficient energy absorption. However, its mechanical properties can vary based on factors such as species, age, locations, methods, and treatment. Treating bamboo is essential to enhance its properties and durability. The literature provides various natural and chemical treatments which enhanced some of the properties but also reported a drawbacks on higher temperature, content and duration. This paper reviewed 57 articles from Scopus database, specifically focusing on article-document type publications from the years 2003 to 2023. Additional references were also incorporated to address concerns in properties, treatment and standards to provide systematic understanding. MATLAB was utilized for data text analytics. With extensive assessment on the articles, the following gaps and concerns were observed and recommends for further study and assessment such as for bamboo properties, the development of centralized guidelines and procedures for the preparation and processing; exploration of alternative materials to reinforce bamboo without compromising its ductility; development of joint connections, and testing of mechanical properties considering seismic, wind and vibration. For treatment methods, the standardization of procedures using natural, chemical or combination. Lastly, for bamboo codes and standards, assessment of existing codes and standards for testing the mechanical properties of bamboo highlighting the potential limitations and areas, uniformity, differences with all existing similar standards. By filling these gaps, it can support the reliability and robustness of bamboo as a sustainable material, fostering its promotion and adoption in construction industry.

Muography is an expanding technique for the investigation of the internal structure of targets of interest in geophysics. The flux of high penetrating muons produced by primary cosmic rays is attenuated by traversing kilometer size objects like X-ray flux is attenuated through the human body. This gives the possibility to study the internal structure of volcanoes or underground cavities, e.g., starting from the measure of the muon flux transmission through the target. Many groups of researchers working with this technique have to face with high background level that afflicts the reconstruction of muon tracks near the horizontal direction. An important source of background is the scattering of particles near the detector that produces a wrong reconstruction of the incoming direction. An innovative technique based on Cherenkov radiation was investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations developed in Geant4 toolkit and MATLAB. The results reported in this paper show that the presented technique is able to correctly distinguish the incoming direction of particles with an efficiency higher than 98%. This new kind of detector could represent an alternative for high resolution charged particle tracking also for other applications.

This study investigated the efficiency of scale-propellers, typically used on small drones. A scale-propeller is accepted as having a diameter of 7 to 21 inches. The Ukraine War has demonstrated the utility of relatively small, low-cost first-person view (FPV) drones, which are attritable. This investigation outlines the development of a MATLAB optimisation code, based on minimum induced loss propeller theory, which calculates the optimal chord and twist distribution for a chosen propeller operating in known flight conditions. The MATLAB code includes a minimum Reynolds number functionality, which provides the option to alter the chord distribution to ensure the entire propeller is operating above a set threshold value of Reynolds (>100,000), as this has been found to be a transition point between low and high section lift-to-drag ratios. Additional functions allow plotting of torque and thrust distributions along the blade. The results have been validated on experimental data taken from an APC ‘Thin Electric’ 10” x 7” propeller, where it was found that both the chord and twist distributions were accurately modelled. The MATLAB code resulted in a 16% increase in the maximum propulsive efficiency. Further work will investigate a direct interface to SolidWorks to aid rapid propeller manufacturing capability.

Cosmogenic nuclides are widely used to constrain the landscape history of glaciated areas. At nunataks in continental polar regions with extremely arid conditions, cosmogenic nuclides are often the only method available to date the ice thinning history of the glacier. However, the amount of cosmogenic isotopes accumulated at the surface of nunataks depends not only on the length of time that rock has been exposed since the last deglaciation, but on the full history of the surface, including muon production under ice, exposure during previous interglacials, subaerial weathering rate, glacial erosion rate, and uplift rate of the nunatak. The NUNAtak Ice Thinning model (NUNAIT) simulates the cosmonuclide accumulation on vertical profiles, fitting the aforementioned parameters to a set of multi-isotope apparent ages from samples taken at different elevations over the ice-sheet surface. The NUNAIT calculator is an easy-to-use tool that constrains parameters that describe the geological history of a nunatak from a set of surface exposure ages.

Over the years, artificial intelligence (AI) is spreading its roots in different areas by utilizing the concept of making the computers learn and handle complex tasks that previously require substantial laborious tasks by human beings. With better accuracy and speed, AI is helping lawyers to streamline work processing. New legal AI software tools like Catalyst, Ross intelligence, and Matlab along with natural language processing provide effective quarrel resolution, better legal clearness, and superior admittance to justice and fresh challenges to conventional law firms providing legal services using leveraged cohort correlate model. This paper discusses current applications of legal AI and suggests deep learning and machine learning techniques that can be applied in future to simplify the cumbersome legal tasks.

Well deliverability optimization is essential for oil and gas production and nodal analysis is a common tool used for selecting suitable production parameters. To accurately calculate upstream and downstream pressures at various production rates at a certain selected node, proper modeling of multiphase flow in wellbores is necessary. However, this process is complex due to the inconsistent velocities of the fluids (i.e., oil, gas, and water) and the interaction between the liquids under high temperature and pressure. Empirical models, such as Hagedorn and Brown (1965), Beggs and Brill (1973), and Mukherjee and Brill (1983 and 1985), and the drift-flux model (Zuber 1965) are commonly used for multiphase flow calculations in wellbores. In this paper, we programmed and evaluated three multiphase flow models (Hagedorn-Brown, Mukherjee-Brill, and drift-flux) using Matlab. The programming includes holdup calculation, pressure gradient calculation, pressure traverse calculation, inflow curve determination, inflow performance relationship (IPR) curve determination, and well deliverability determination. Additionally, we conducted a case study to examine the sensitivity of parameters and compare and analyze the results of pressure traverse, tubing intake curve, and deliverability determination between the drift-flux and Mukherjee-Brill models. Sensitivity analysis was conducted on two of the seven parameters in the drift-flux model, and the effects of production and reservoir parameters on well deliverability were analyzed. The case study results indicated that the Mukherjee-Brill model predicted slightly higher bottomhole pressure compared to the drift-flux model at a fixed oil flow rate, but its well deliverability determination was lower. Furthermore, the drift-flux model showed that the pressure increased with an increase in the distribution coefficient for bubble flow (C0_bubble), while the beta parameter had little impact on the calculated pressure in the studied range. The well deliverability increased when the tubing size and reservoir pressure increased, or the tubing head pressure decreased.

Manufacturers of photovoltaic modules do not provide all the information necessary to predict their performance under different climatic conditions. This forces the development of mathematical models of behavior and the application of mathematical methods for the calculation of their associated parameters. A toolbox called PVMSim implemented in MATLAB/GUI is proposed in this paper. PVMSIm provides models allowing the simulation of photovoltaic modules. A two-diode model is used to represent the effect of irradiance and temperature on the V-I and V-P characteristic curves. The accuracy of PVMSim has been vaildated by applying the models to two mono-crystalline and multi-crystalline solar modules of different power ratings and manufacturers. The model PVMSim model accuracy was verified against the manufacturer’s datasheet. This paper shows that this tool is useful for designers and professionals who require an intuitive graphical interface for fast and accurate modeling, simulation and sizing of photovoltaic systems.

Despite being well established phenomena, solidification principles are experiencing tough challenges in their application to explain microscale transport phenomena in additive manufacturing melt pool. The problem becomes even more complicated when applied to multicomponent bulk metallic glass matrix composites (BMGMC) whose behavior is dubious and still not fully understood. The aim of the present study is to highlight pathways to overcome these challenges. A comprehensive nucleation and growth model based on original KGT theory and Rappaz modification is proposed encompassing actual transient thermophysical BMGMC data to predict evolving microstructure during additive manufacturing. The model is aimed at pictorial representation of in-situ ductile phase dendrite evolution from melt pool during solidification using two-dimensional cellular automaton (CA) methods. It is proposed to be coded in MATLAB® using commercial simulation code ABAQUS® at back end for macroscopic heat transfer model. The results will be compared with experimental values for validation.

As the number of ships for marine transportation increases with the advancement of global trade, encountering multiple ships in marine traffic becomes common. This situation raises the risk of collision of the ships; hence this paper proposes a novel Fuzzy-logic based intelligent conflict detection and resolution algorithm, where the collision courses and possible avoiding actions are analyzed by considering ship motion dynamics and the input and output fuzzy membership functions are derived. As a conflict detection module, the Collision Risk (CR) is measured for each ship by using a scaled nondimensional Distance to the Closest Point of Approach (DCPA) and Time to the Closest Point of Approach (TCPA) as inputs. Afterwards, the decisions for collision avoidance are made based on the calculated CR, encountering angle and relative angle of each ship measured from others. In this regard, the rules for the Fuzzy interface system are defined in accordance with the COLREGs, and the whole system is implemented on the MATLAB Simulink platform. In addition, to deal with the multiple ship encounters, the paper proposes a unique maximum-course and minimum-speed change approach for decision making, which has been found to be efficient to solve Imazu problems, and other complicated multiple-ship encounters.

The abrupt increase of the electric vehicles in Bangladesh needs huge amount of power. As a result, alternative energy sources are emphasized due to limited fossil fuels in order to develop a sustainable energy sector with environment friendly resources. Bangladesh has an enormous potential in the field of renewable resources like biogas and biomass. This paper presents 20 kW electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) utilizing biogas resources where maximum energy requirement is 100 kWh. In this paper, the biogas based EVCS is designed using MATLAB Simulink and HOMER software. Daily 15-20 electric vehicles can be recharged their batteries using the proposed charging station. The proposed system offers lower cost of energy compared to the grid electricity. Moreover, the proposed charging station shows 68.75% reduction in CO₂ emission than grid based charging station. In addition, the proposed EVCS will save monthly $ 16.25 and $ 27.50 respectively for easy bike and auto rickshaw type electric vehicles in Bangladesh.

Due to an increase of the monocrystalline PV systems installations, for a drive towards the sustainable smart cities in the hot arid developing country such as Pakistan, pose challenges of the performance and degradation issues. Monocrystalline PV module efficiencies are declining and damaging under the continuous exposure to higher surface day-time temperatures in the different parts of the country. A MATLAB simulations were performed based on the validated mathematical approach. This paper investigates the hot arid surface temperature impacts on the performance of PV modules during the summer and winter seasons in Pakistan. The investigations are performed examining the power generating efficiency of the PV system. This paper also investigates the influence of installations of PV-system in the North, South, East and West regions of Pakistan. It was examined that the northern areas of Pakistan are more suitable for maintaining the long-term durability of the PV system. Investigations are performed for the peak summer and peak winter days. During summer months, cooling strategies have to be implemented to overcome the heating effects whilst reducing degradation effect on installed PV-system.

Rising sensitivity of the loads with respect to power quality has grown-up the consideration of power system study and power quality enhancement systems. The fluctuation of voltage outside the normal working range due to faults may lead to unsuitable interruption of wind turbines. This thesis present 1.5MW grid connected Adama Ⅰ Wind Farm in Ethiopia with the objectives to capture the optimal power from the wind and ensure voltage source for sensitive load. This paper deals with the effective voltage sag mitigation and Harmonic distortion effectively met IEEE 519-1992 standard under all Phase to ground fault compensation by using Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR), to regulate the terminal voltage of the wind farm and safe operation of sensitive load. The DVR utilizes a feed forward control-based algorithm to generate PWM. The simulation results are going to be carried out by MATLAB-Simulink to verify the operation and effectiveness of DVR during balanced voltage sag and swell conditions.

Most of the municipalities in the Gulf region are facing performance related issues in their municipal solid waste management (MSWM) systems. They lack to possess a deliberate inter-municipality benchmarking processes. Instead of identifying the performance gaps for their key components (e.g., personnel productivity, operational reliability, etc.) and adopt proactive measures, the municipalities primarily rely on an efficient emergency response. A novel hierarchical modeling framework, based on deductive reasoning, is developed for performance assessment of MSWM systems. Fuzzy rule based modeling using Simulink-MATLAB was used for performance inferencing at different levels, i.e., component, sub-components, etc. The model is capable of handling the inherent uncertainties due to limited data and imprecise knowledge base. The model’s outcomes can exclusively assist the managers working at different levels of organizational hierarchy for effective decision-making. Performance of the key component, assists the senior management to assess the overall compliance level of performance objectives. Subsequently, operation management can hone in the sub-components to acquire useful information for intra-municipality performance management. While, individual indicators are useful for inter-municipality benchmarking. The model has been implemented on two municipalities operating in Qassim Region, Saudi Arabia. The results demonstrate the model’s pragmatism for continuous performance improvement of MSWM systems in the country and elsewhere.

This paper presents the automation of the thin-layer chromatography technique whose separation and identification of molecules present in a mixture are currently done manually and laboriously [1]. We have therefore found an interest in automating this technique. In this part, the method implemented comprises 2 steps. First we proceeded to the segmentation of the spots obtained on the chromatographic plate. We then developed a program to identify families of molecules such as coumarins, terpenes, tannins, flavonoids, polyphenols, etc. by calculating segmentation parameters such as standard deviation, entropy, average pixel intensity from an algorithm on the matlab software. Finally our results have been compared to the results obtained by the traditional identification technique in laboratories. Some similarity between the two results obtained shows the reliability and the robustness of our technique.

In this paper, we propose, implement, and test two novel downlink LTE scheduling algorithms. The implementation and testing of these algorithms were in Matlab, and they are based on the use of Reinforcement Learning, more specifically, the Qlearning technique for scheduling two types of users. The first algorithm is called a Collaborative scheduling algorithm, and the second algorithm is called a Competitive scheduling algorithm. The first type of the scheduled users is the Primary Users, and they are the licensed subscribers that pay for their service. The second type of the scheduled users is the Secondary Users, and they could be unlicensed subscribers that dont pay for their service, device to device communications, or sensors. Each user whether it is a primary or secondary is considered as an agent. In the Collaborative scheduling algorithm, the primary user agents will collaborate in order to make a joint scheduling decision about allocating the resource blocks to each one of them, then the secondary user agents will compete among themselves to use the remaining resource blocks. In the Competitive scheduling algorithm, the primary user agents will compete among themselves over the available resources, then the secondary user agents will compete among themselves over the remaining resources. Experimental results show that both scheduling algorithms converged to almost ninety percent utilization of the spectrum, and provided fair shares of the spectrum among users.

In this work, the problem is considered for eliminating a non-uniform rectilinear smearing of an image by mathematical and computer-based way, for example, a picture of several cars taken with a fixed camera and moving with different speeds. The problem is described by a set of 1-dimensional Fredholm integral equations (IEs) of the first kind of convolution type with a 1-dimensional point spread function (PSF) at uniform smearing and by a set of new 1-dimensional IEs of a general type (not convolution type) with a 2-dimensional PSF at non-uniform smearing. The problem is also described by one 2-dimensional IE of convolution type with a 2-dimensional PSF at uniform smearing and by a new 2-dimensional IE of a general type with a 4-dimensional PSF at non-uniform smearing. The problem for solving Fredholm IE of the first kind is ill-posed (unstable). Therefore, IEs of convolution type are solved by the Fourier transform (FT) method and Tikhonov's regularization (TR), and IEs of general type are solved by the quadrature/cubature and TR methods. Moreover, the magnitude of the image smear Δ is determined by the original “spectral method”, which increases the accuracy of image restoration. It is shown that the use of a set of 1-dimensional IEs is preferable to one 2-dimensional IE in the case of non-uniform smearing. In the inverse problem (image restoration), the Gibbs effect (the effect of false waves) in the image may occur. It can be edge or inner. The edge effect is well suppressed by the proposed technique “diffusing the edges". In the case of an inner effect, it is eliminated with difficulty, but the image smearing itself plays the role of diffusing and suppresses the inner Gibbs effect to a large extent. It is shown (in the presence of impulse noise in an image) that the well-known Tukey median filter can distort the image itself, and the Gonzalez adaptive filter also distorts the image (but to a lesser extent). We propose a modified adaptive filter. A software package was developed in MatLab and illustrative calculations are performed.

Intelligent ship technology is currently an international research hotspot, and model predictive control is widely used in the path-tracking control of intelligent vehicles. To construct an intelligent ship anti-disturbance path-tracking control method, firstly, an environmental disturbance model was constructed with the actual meteorological data of the target sea area. Secondly, the Fossen ship equation of motion is linearized and discretized as the ship motion model. Thirdly, the expression of the prediction equation is derived from the ship motion model. Fourthly, the cost function is constructed by using the polar diameter and polar angle values of the ship. Fifth, the power function in the cost function is replaced with an exponential function to obtain an improved cost function. Sixthly, according to the Lyapunov theory and the MPC terminal constraint theory, the stability of the improved cost function is verified. Seventh, different test paths are set up, the environmental disturbance model is taken as the external disturbance, the ship motion model, the prediction equation, and the improved cost function are used to design the anti-disturbance path-tracking control algorithm according to the model prediction control idea for simulation experiments. Finally, different MATLAB simulation results show that the improved cost function can resist disturbance of the external wave, current, and wind, and effectively track the target path. Therefore, this study provides a reference for improving the navigation safety of ship path-tracking.

Digital twins are the foundation of autonomous off-road vehicles. Dynamic reduction methods are one of several ways to develop digital twins for off-road vehicles. The article commences with a comprehensive overview of the most widely used dynamic reduction methods and then introduces performance metrics for assessing their efficacies in the context of digital twins. The paper additionally includes a detailed mathematical derivation of the state-space representation for reduced-order finite element models. The state-space representation of the reduced finite element models facilitates their export to problem-solving environments for dynamic analysis. The state-space models are eventually solved utilizing the built-in libraries of numerical solvers in textual and graphical programming platforms. In addition, the article identifies the set of solvers that best suit the simulation of virtual models for off-road vehicles. This article also includes an evaluation of the simulation results of digital models with modes ranging from 0 to 30 Hz. In addition, the article demonstrates the lower bound of the frequency range necessary and sufficient to be retained in off-road vehicle virtual models. Finally, the paper presents the simulation outcomes for digital models of commercial off-road vehicles with custom-built control, electrical, and control systems.

The migration from MATLAB to Python (M-to-PY) has gained significant traction in recent computational research. While MATLAB has long served as a linchpin in myriad scientific endeavors, there's an emerging trend to rejuvenate these projects using Python's extensive AI tools and libraries. This study presents a semi-automated process for M-to-PY conversion, using a detailed case study of an image skeletonization project comprising fifteen MATLAB files and a 1404-image dataset. Skeletonization is foundational for ongoing 3D motion detection research using AI transformers, predominantly developed in Python. The utilization of ChatGPT-4, acting as an AI co-programmer, is pivotal in this conversion. By leveraging the public OpenAI API, we developed an M-to-PY converter prototype, evaluated its efficacy using test cases from the Bard bot, and subsequently employed the converted code in an AI application. The dual contributions encompass a well-tested M-to-PY converter and a Skeleton App capable of sketching and skeletonizing any given image, enriching the AI toolset. This study accentuates how AI resources, like ChatGPT-4, can simplify code transitions, opening doors for innovative AI implementations using primarily MATLAB-coded scientific research.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) represent a new model of social robots for home care of dependent persons. In this regard, this article introduces a study on people’s feeling of safety and comfort while watching the monitoring trajectory of a quadrotor dedicated to determining their condition. Three main parameters are evaluated: the relative monitoring altitude, the monitoring velocity and the shape of the monitoring path around the person (ellipsoidal or circular). For this purpose, a new trajectory generator based on a state machine, which is successfully implemented and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink®, is described. The study is carried out with 37 participants using a virtual reality (VR) platform based on two modules, UAV Simulator and VR Visualiser, both communicating through the MQTT protocol. The participants’ preferences have been a high relative monitoring altitude, a high monitoring velocity and a circular path. These choices are a starting point for the design of trustworthy socially assistive UAVs flying in real homes.

Instead of simplified steady-state models, with modern computers, one can solve the complete aero-thermodynamics happening in gas turbine engines. In the present article, we describe a mathematical model and numerical procedure to represent the transient response of a PT6A gas turbine engine operating at off-design conditions. The aero-thermal model consists of a set of algebraic and ordinary differential equations that arise from the application of the mass, linear momentum, angular momentum, and energy balances in each engine's component. The solution code has been developed in Matlab-Simulink using a block-oriented approach. Transient simulations of the PT6A engine start-up have been carried out by changing the original Jet-A1 fuel with biodiesel blends. Time plots of the main thermodynamic variables are shown, especially those regarding the structural integrity of the burner. Numerical results have been validated against reported experimental measurements and GasTurb simulations. The computer model has been capable to predict acceptable fuel blends, such that the real PT6A engine can be substituted to avoid the risk of damaging it.

Visualization of volumetric data holds great importance, particularly in medical and biomedical applications. Various imaging techniques, such as FMRI and 3D microscopy, are employed to generate volumetric data, used in medical practice, research, and teaching. Commonly utilized tools like 3D Slicer, Fiji, and MATLAB ® aid in rendering and analyzing 3D images. However, these tools may lack comprehensive rendering functionality and face challenges in handling computational demands as data sizes grow. To address these limitations, this work introduces a GPU-supported renderer with a MATLAB ® interface. This solution gives the user flexible control over rendering parameters and optimizes data transfer through a memory management system. By leveraging the computational power of NVIDIA GPUs, the renderer enables complex and high-quality renderings, enhancing speed and efficiency. It therefore facilitates the analysis and visualization of volumetric data within an integrated environment, namely MATLAB ®, streamlining their workflows. This advancement provides valuable opportunities for researchers and medical professionals to explore and comprehend volumetric data effectively.

This research investigates the energy consumption of buildings managed by traditional Building Management Systems (BMS) and proposes the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to enhance energy efficiency. Conventional BMS often suffer from significant energy wastage and safety hazards due to sensor failures or malfunctions. These issues arise when building systems continue to operate under unknown conditions while the BMS is offline, leading to increased energy consumption and operational risks. The study demonstrates that integrating IoT systems with existing BMS can substantially improve energy efficiency in smart buildings. The research involved designing a system architecture prototype, performing MATLAB simulations, and real-life case study which revealed that IoT devices are effective in reducing energy waste, particularly in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems and lighting. Additionally, an auxiliary bypass system was incorporated in parallel with the IoT system to enhance reliability in the event of IoT system failures. Preliminary findings indicate that the integration of IoT systems with traditional BMS significantly boosts energy efficiency and safety in smart buildings. This integration offers a promising solution for advancing energy management practices and policies, thereby improving both operational performance and sustainability in building management.

Electromagnetic actuation can support many fields of technology, such as robotics or biomedical applications. In this context, fully understanding the system behavior and proposing a low-cost package for feedback control is challenging. Modeling the electromagnetic force is particularly tricky because it is a nonlinear function of the actuated object’s position and coil’s current. Measuring in real time the position of the actuated object with the precision required for accurate motion control is also nontrivial. In this study, we propose a novel, cost-effective electromagnetic set-up to achieve position control via visual feedback. We actuate vertically and under different experimental conditions a 10 mm diameter steel ball hanging on a low-stiffness spring, demonstrating good tracking performance (the position error remains within ±0.5 mm with a negligible phase delay in the best scenarios). The experimental results confirm the feasibility of the proposed set-up, which is characterized by minimum complexity and realized with off-the-shelf and cost-effective components. For these reasons, such a contribution helps to understand and apply electromagnetic actuation even further.

This work is part of an ongoing research project to develop an unmanned flying social robot to monitor dependants at home in order to detect the person’s state and bring the necessary assistance. In this sense, this paper focuses on the description of a virtual reality (VR) simulation platform for the monitoring process of an avatar in a virtual home by a rotatory-wing autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). This platform is based on a distributed architecture composed of three modules communicated through the Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol: the UAV Simulator implemented in MATLAB/Simulink, the VR Visualiser developed in Unity, and the new emotion recognition (ER) System developed in Python. Using a face detection algorithm and a convolutional neural network (CNN), the ER System is able to detect the person’s face in the image captured by the UAV’s on-board camera and classify the emotion among seven possible ones (surprise, fear, happiness, sadness, disgust, anger or neutral expression). The experimental results demonstrate the correct integration of this new computer vision module within the VR platform, as well as the good performance of the designed CNN, with around 85% in the F1-score, a mean of the precision and recall of the model. The developed emotion detection system can be used in the future implementation of the assistance UAV that monitors dependent people in a real environment, since the methodology used is valid for images of real people.
