In this paper glass crystallization behavior of 50ZnO:47B2O3:3Nb2O3:0.5Eu2O3 (G-0h) glass has been investigated in detail by DSC, XRD and TEM analysis. The luminescent properties of resulted glass-ceramics were also investigated. By XRD and TEM analysis crystallization of several crystalline phases have been proved (α-Zn3B2O6, β-Zn3B2O6 and ZnNb2O6). By calculating of crystal parameters it was found that europium ions are successfully incorporated in the β-Zn3B2O6. Photo-luminescent spectra show an increased emission in the resulting glass-ceramic samples as compared with the parent glass sample because of the higher asymmetry of Eu3+ ions in the crystalline phases obtained. It was established that the optimum emission intensity is registered for glass-ceramic sample obtained after 25 hours heat treatment of the parent glass.

Zn2GeO4 is considered a very promising alternative to current luminescent semiconductors. Previous results suggest that its emitted wavelength may depend on different variables, such as particle size and morphology, among others. In this work, we have prepared pure and highly homogeneous Zn2GeO4 nanorods under hydrothermal synthesis conditions with a willemite-like structure. Their luminescent properties have been explored and their band gap estimated, which are distinct to previously reported Zn2GeO4 bulk particles. Therefore, our results identify particle morphology as a crucial factor for maximizing and fine-tuning the luminesce of Zn2GeO4 nano-phosphors.

Loess provides a valuable terrestrial record of past environmental conditions, including the dynamics of air mass circulation responsible for dust transport. Here we explore variations in the luminescence characteristics of sedimentary quartz and feldspar – dominant minerals in loess-palaeosol sequences (LPS) - as possible tools for identifying changes in source. We investigate luminescence sensitivity, a rapidly measurable index which is the product of interplay between source lithology and the history of the mineral in question. Variations in sensitivity down profile may therefore reflect, among other factors such as pedogenesis and reworking, changes in sediment provenance. We undertake an empirical investigation of the luminescence sensitivity of quartz and feldspar from different grain-size fractions from the climatically sensitive Schwalbenberg LPS in the German Rhine valley, comparing samples from a 30 m core spanning the last full glacial cycle with samples of oxygen isotope stage (OIS) 3-2 age exposed within a c. 6 m profile downslope. The temporal overlap enables comparison of luminescence characteristics with respect to possible provenance change during that timeframe. We find an overall inverse relationship between quartz and feldspar sensitivity, as well as variability in sensitivity between different quartz grain sizes. There is some indication that feldspar sensitivity increases during periods of soil formation down the core. In particular, measurements of IR50 sensitivity on unprocessed sediments show correlation with down-profile trends in more established indicators of provenance. This suggests it may be used to provide a reliable, rapid scan of sensitivity changes, and may suggest source variability over millennial timescales.

Luminescence-based sensors for measuring oxygen concentration are widely used both in industry and research due to the practical advantages and sensitivity of this type of sensing. The measuring principle is the luminescence quenching by oxygen molecules, which results in a change of the luminescence decay time and intensity. In the standard approach, this change is related to an oxygen concentration using the Stern–Volmer equation. This equation, which in most of the cases is non-linear, is parametrized through device-specific constants. Therefore, to determine these parameters every sensor needs to be precisely calibrated at one or more known concentrations. This work explores an entirely new artificial intelligence approach and demonstrates the feasibility of oxygen sensing through machine learning. The specifically developed neural network learns very efficiently to relate the input quantities to the oxygen concentration. The results show a mean deviation of the predicted from the measured concentration of 0.5 % air, comparable to many commercial and low-cost sensors. Since the network was trained using synthetically generated data, the accuracy of the model predictions is limited by the ability of the generated data to describe the measured data, opening up future possibilities for significant improvement by using a large number of experimental measurements for training. The approach described in this work demonstrates the applicability of artificial intelligence to sensing technology and paves the road for the next generation of sensors.

The interband transitions of urania (UO2) are validated independently through cathode luminescence of UO2. A picture emerges consistent with density functional theory. While theory is generally consistent with experiment, it is evident that the choice of functional can significantly alter the band gap and some details of the band structure, in particular at the conduction band minimum. Strictly ab initio predictions of the optical properties of the actinide compounds, based on density functional theory alone continues to be somewhat elusive.

Nanocrystalline La_1-xNd_xFeO₃ powders with different concentrations of Nd³⁺ have been synthesized by modified Pechini method. Their structure was studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Further, La_1-xNd_xFeO₃ nanoceramics were prepared by high pressure sintering technique. The luminescence spectra of the powders were investigated as a function of concentration of active dopant to check the possible energy transfers observed due to Nd³⁺ concentration changes. The electrical and magnetic properties of the powders and ceramics were investigated to determine the effect of Nd³⁺ doping on the dielectric permittivity and magnetization in the wide frequency range.

The classical approach to non-linear regression in physics, is to take a mathematical model describing the functional dependence of the dependent variable from a set of independent variables, and then, using non-linear fitting algorithms, extract the parameters used in the modeling. Particularly challenging are real systems, characterised by several additional influencing factors related to specific components, like electronics or optical parts. In such cases, to make the model reproduce the data, empirically determined terms are built-in the models to compensate for the impossibility of modeling things that are, by construction, impossible to model. A new approach to solve this issue is to use neural networks, particularly feed-forward architectures with a sufficient number of hidden layers and an appropriate number of output neurons, each responsible for predicting the desired variables. Unfortunately, feed-forward neural networks (FFNNs) usually perform less efficiently when applied to multi-dimensional regression problems, that is when they are required to predict simultaneously multiple variables that depend from the input dataset in fundamentally different ways. To address this problem, we propose multi-task learning (MTL) architectures. These are characterized by multiple branches of task-specific layers, which have as input the output of a common set of layers. To demonstrate the power of this approach for multi-dimensional regression, the method is applied to luminescence sensing. Here the MTL architecture allows predicting multiple parameters, the oxygen concentration and the temperature, from a single set of measurements.

In this study, we report a novel synthesis of hydrophobic silica aerogel powder composites, functionalized and binary-doped with [Tb(phen)₂](NO₃)₃ and [Eu(phen)₂](NO₃)₃ nanocrystals, employing a two-step sol-gel methodology. The investigation delves into the structural elucidation, optical properties and thermal conductivity of these functionalized Tb(III)-Eu(III) composites. Our analysis encompasses diffuse reflectance spectra, along with excitation and luminescence spectra, highlighting the quantum yields of composites with varying chemical composition. Remarkably, these samples exhibit a strong luminescence, with distinct hues of red or green color upon the specific doping type and level. The detailed examination of excitation spectra and quantum yields unequivocally establishes robust energy transfer mechanisms from the 1,10-phenanthroline molecule to the lanthanide ions. Notably, our study uncovers a Tb³⁺→Eu³⁺ energy transfer phenomenon within the binary functionalized samples, providing compelling evidence for a structural formation process occurring within the mesoporous framework of the aerogel powders.

Up-conversion luminescence (UCL) materials are of great importance due to their unique optical properties. In particular, the red UCL, falling into the optical transmittance window of biological tissues, can realize deep tissue penetration depth and high-resolution bioimaging. In this work, effective red UCL is achieved in the ternary sulfide by the introduction of Tm3+ or Ho3+ ions into Er3+ doped NaYS2 under 1550 nm excitation. The main emission peak is successfully tuned from green (NaYS2:Er3+) to highly efficient red luminescence (NaYS2:Er3+,Tm3+ and NaYS2:Er3+,Ho3+). The maximum red to green emission intensity ratio (IR/IG) increased by 31 and 80 times, respectively. The lifetime of 4I9/2(Er3+) level decreases significantly from 3432 s (NaYS2:Er3+) down to 636 (NaYS2:Er3+,Tm3+) and 423 s (NaYS2:Er3+,Ho3+), respectively. This is due to the altered energy transfer pathways, resulting in the population of 4F9/2(Er3+). The mechanisms of UCL and energy transfer processes are further supported by fluorescence decay dynamic measurements. The results show the realization of red-emissive UCL in the promising NaYS2 matrix, representing a new type of red UCL phosphors.

The present contribution is focused on the relation preparation – structure – optical properties of hybrid silica and zirconia powders containing Eu(III) complexes: [Eu(ntac)₃][pphendcn] and [Eu(phen)₂](NO₃)₃. Methods for functionalization of silica and zirconia microparticles, based on adsorption of 1,10-phenantroline and [Eu(ntac)₃][pphendcn], and doping with [Eu(phen)₂](NO₃)₃ nanoparticles are proposed to obtain of red emitting hybrid composites with quantum efficiency 20 – 50 %. The optical properties of rare earth ions incorporated in silica and zirconia composites are used to explore the site symmetry (D₂, C_2v or lower) of the Eu³⁺ optical centers in the hybrid composites. Quantum yields of the investigated sol-gel micropowders and quantification of their optical spectra are presented.

Phosphors based on magnesium titanate activated with Mn⁴⁺ ions are of great interest because, when excited with blue light, they display a strong red-emitting luminescence. They are characterized by a luminescence decay which is strongly temperature dependent in the range from 0 to 80 °C, making these materials very promising for temperature sensing in the biochemical field. In this work the optical and thermal properties of the luminescence of Mg₂TiO₄ are investigated for different Mn⁴⁺ doping concentrations. The potential of this material for temperature sensing is demonstrated by fabricating a fiber optic temperature microsensor and by comparing its performance against a standard resistance thermometer. The response of the fiber optic sensor is exceptionally fast, enabling monitoring of temperature fluctuation in subsecond time domain.

Solving the problem of searching for new scintillators based on available materials, we were the first to obtain and study a single crystal of CsI doped with divalent ytterbium ions. This work was directed to study of luminescence mechanism of Yb2+ ions and excitation transfer from crystalline matrix of CsI to dopant ions under VUV excitation. Using time-resolved spectroscopy, spin-allowed and spin-forbidden radiative transitions of ytterbium ions at room temperature were discovered. At 10 degrees, the emission of self-trapped excitons was detected. UV and VUV excitation spectra were obtained in the emission bands of ytterbium and self-trapped excitons. It was found that Yb2+ luminescence is excited in the excitonic region in the range of 10-45 eV. The mechanism of charge compensation of Yb2+ ions in a CsI crystal was also studied, the spectrum of the thermally stimulated depolarization current was measured, and the activation energies of the two observed peaks were calculated. These peaks belong to impurity-vacancy complexes in two different positions.It is concluded that Yb2+ ions are promising dopants for CsI scintillators and X-ray phosphors in combination with SiPM photodetectors.

Modern lifestyle has increased our utilization of pollutants such as heavy metals, aromatic compounds, and contaminants of emerging concern including pharmaceutical and personal products and other materials that may have an important environmental impact. Especially, the ultimate results of intense use of highly stable materials, such as heavy metals and chemical restudies are that they turn into waste materials which, when discharged, accumulate in the environment water bodies. In this context, the present review presents application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in electrochemiluminescent (ECL) sensing for water pollutant detection. MOF composites applied as innovative luminophore or luminophore carriers, materials for electrode modification and enhancement of co-reaction in ECL sensors have enabled sensitive monitoring of some most common contaminants of emerging concern such as heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals and cyanotoxins. Moreover, we provide future trends and prospects associated with ECL MOF-composites for environmental sensing.

Novel tetragonal matrix Ba0.5Gd0.5-xNaxF2.5-x, where x = 0.05, doped by Yb3+, Ho3+, Er3+, was synthesized by molten salt synthesis (MSS) from nitrate flux. XRD data show that tetragonal phase with a = 4.122(1) Å, c = 17.672(1) Å is stable in argon atmosphere up to 960 °C. Luminescence spectra recorded in 500-900 nm and 1050-1700 nm upon 974 nm pumping demonstrated the characteristic luminescence at 1550 nm (4I13/2 → 4I15/2) for Er3+ and 1150 nm (5I6 → 5I8) for Ho3+. The relative thermal sensitivity (Sr) at 296-316 K were 0.3 %*K-1 and 5.5%*К-1 in shortwave infrared (SWIR) and visible range, respectively. Synthesized luminophores can be used as dual-range optical temperature sensors, which simultaneously operating in visible and SWIR ranges.

Diamond powders with inclusions of europium atoms were synthesized at high pressure (7.7 GPa) and temperature (1800oC) from a mixture of pentaerythritol, C(CH2OH)4, and pyrolyzate of diphthalocyanine (C64H32N16Eu) served as a special precursor. In prepared diamonds by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, we have found the concentration of Eu atoms of 51±5 ppm that is by two orders of magnitude greater than that in known natural and synthetic diamonds. X-ray diffraction, SEM, X-ray exited optical luminescence, Raman and IR spectroscopy have confirmed the formation of diamond monocrystals of high quality with em-bedded Eu atoms and a nitrogen content of ~500 ppm. Numerical simulation has allowed us de-termine the energy cost of 5.8 eV needed for the incorporation of a single Eu atom with adjacent vacancy into growing diamond crystal (528 carbons).

The figures of merit of luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) thermometry for Er3+ in 40 different crystals and glasses have been calculated and compared. For calculations, the relevant data has been collected from the literature while the missing data were derived from available absorption and emission spectra. The calculated parameters include Judd-Ofelt parameters, refractive indexes, Slater integrals, spin-orbit coupling parameters, reduced matrix elements (RMEs), energy differences between emitting levels used for LIR, absolute and relative sensitivities. We found a slight variation of RMEs between hosts as a result of variations in values of Slater integrals and spin-orbit coupling parameters, and we calculated their average values over 40 hosts. The calculations showed that crystals perform better than glasses in Er3+ based thermometry, and we identified hosts that have large values of both absolute and relative sensitivity.

A tetraphenylethylene-derived compound, TPEPhDAT, has been prepared by successive Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and ring-closing reactions. This compound exhibits aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties in the DMSO/MeOH system, with a fluorescence emission intensity in the aggregated state that is 5-fold higher than that of its counterpart in a dilute solution. Moreover, the diaminotriazine structure of the molecule is a good acceptor of protons, and thus the TPEPhDAT molecule exhibits acid-responsive fluorescence. TPEPhDAT was protonated by trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), leading to a fluorescence quenching, which was reversibly restored by treatment with ammonia (On-Off switch). Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) computational studies have shown that protonation enhances the electron-withdrawing capacity of the triazine nucleus and reduces the bandgap, producing a more intense intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), thus leading to fluorescence quenching. MeOH can easily remove the protonated TPEPhDAT, and this acid-induced discolouration and erasable property can be applied in anti-counterfeiting.

For colloids of NaYF4:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanoparticles in DMSO by the method of time-resolved lumi-nescence spectroscopy with nanosecond pulsed excitation at a wavelength of 975 nm the photo-physical processes that determine the course of kinetic curves have been revealed. It has been found that the luminescence rise time decreases with an increase of the concentration of activators and sensitizers due to increase of the efficiency of energy transfer from sensitizers to activators. Cross-relaxation of the excited states of activators provides a decrease of the lumi-nescence decay time with an increase of the concentration of activators and a constant concentration of the sensitizer. There was no correlation between the time of luminescence decay with the change of the concentration of sensitizers and constant concentration of activators due to the competition of the processes of energy back transfer from activators to sensitizers and the "feeding" of activators by excitations coming from remote sensitizer ions.

We present a crack-free optically active SiO2 glass-composite material containing YAG:Ce synthesized by a modified sol-gel technique. A glass-composite material consisting of yttrium aluminum garnet doped with Ce3+ (YAG:Ce) entrapped into a SiO2 xerogel. This composite material has been prepared by sol–gel technique with modified gelation and drying process to obtain crack-free optically active SiO2 glass. The concentration of the YAG:Ce was from 0.5 to 2.0 wt%. All synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques. The luminescence properties of the obtained materials were studied.

Highly colloidal Eu-doped Gd2O3 nanoparticles(core-NPs) were synthesized by thermal decomposition via weak base at low temperature (150oC), subsequently, silica layers were deposited to increased colloidal stability, solubility, biocompatibility and no-toxicity at the environmental condition. XRD results indicate the highly purified, crystalline, single phase cubic phase Gd2O3 nanocrystals. TEM image shows the mesoporous thick silica layer was effectively coated over the core nanocrystals, which have irregular size with nearly spherical shape and a mean grain size is about 10-30 nm. Absorption spectra and zeta potential results in aqueous media revealed that solubility, colloidal stability, and biocompatibility character was enhanced from core to core-shell structure because of silica layer surface encapsulation. The samples demonstrate excellent photoluminescence properties (dominant emission 5D0→7F2 transition in red region at 610 nm) indicated the advantage to use in optical bio-detection and bio-labeling etc. The photoluminescence intensity of the silica shell modified core/shell nanoparticles were suppressed relatively core-nanoparticles, it indicates the multi-photon relaxation pathways arising from the surface coated high vibrational energy molecules of the silanol groups. The core/nSiO2/mSiO2 nanocrystals display strong emission (5D0→7F2) transition along with excellent solubility and biocompatibility, which may find promising applications in photonic based biomedical applications.

The optical properties of the Nafion polymer membrane containing colloidal CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanocrystals embedded by diffusion have been studied. The CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanocrystals have a core/shell/shell appearance. A toluene solution was used to provide mobility of the active sul-fone groups of the Nafion membrane and to embed the nanocrystals inside the membrane. The kinetics of the process of nanocrystal embedding into the membrane matrix was studied using luminescence analysis, absorption spectroscopy and laser emission spectroscopy techniques. The diffusion of colloidal CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanocrystals into the Nafion proton exchange membrane resulted in a new molecular complex «Nafion-colloidal CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanocrystals». The pres-ence of new luminescence centers based on CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanocrystals in the membrane was registered using laser emission spectroscopy. Colloidal nanocrystals located in the Nafion ma-trix represent an analogue of a luminescent transducer. The lines contained in the luminescence spectrum of the membrane, which has been in solution with colloidal nanocrystals for a long time, registered upon its drying, show the kinetics of the formation of the molecular complex «Nafion membrane - nanocrystals». The luminescence spectrum of the membrane with nano-crystals contains additional intensity maxima that do not coincide with the spectral lines of the solvent and Nafion membrane. The intensity of the luminescence spectrum of the membrane with embedded nanocrystals is higher than the intensity of the secondary emission peak of the initial nanocrystals, which is important for the practical use of the complex «Nafion-colloidal nanocrystals» in optical systems.

Even with significant developments in nanoscience, fairly little is known about the interactions of nanocrystal semiconducting materials with bio-macromolecules. These interactions can influence the properties of both nanocrystals and bio-macromolecules. Understanding this interface is a condition to apply both nanoparticles and biomolecules for bioengineering. To investigate the interfacial phenomena of cadmium selenide quantum dots (CdSe QDs) nanocrystals with proteins extracted from Moringa oleifera seeds, different concentrations of cadmium selenide quantum dots-Moringa oleifera seed protein (CdSe—MSP) complexes were prepared. Respective CdSe QDs with hexagonal phase and crystalline size in the range of 4—7 nm were synthesized and labelled with the purified mesoporous MSP having a surface area of 8.4 m2/g. The interaction mechanism between CdSe QDs and MSP was studied using the UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence emission spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. The UV-Vis absorption spectrum showed an absorption band of CdSe-MSP complexes at 546.5 nm. The lowest absorbance intensity was observed for the complex with the highest concentration of M. oleifera seed proteins. The fluorescence (FL) spectroscopy of the complex was excited at 280 nm wavelength and emission was monitored at 598 nm. FL intensity of CdSe QDs was found to decrease with an increasing concentration of MSP. Using Stern-Volmer analysis, the binding constants (Kb), quenching constants (Kq) and the number of binding sites (n) were determined. The thermodynamic potentials ∆Hθ(—321.3 kJmol—1);\ ∆Sθ( 156.0 JK—1mol—1) and ∆Gθ(—46.6 kJmol—1) were also calculated. The complexes could be classified as the dynamic quenching mechanism. In the previous studies, the standard quenchers, viz. acrylamide, iodide and nitrate were used to quench the fluorescence of the MSP whereas in this study the protein has acted as a quencher of QDs fluorescence. The stability of the complex is strongly influenced by the CdSe QDs adsorbed into MSP through electrostatics interaction and surface-bound complexation equilibrium attraction. This information can help to elucidate the surface characteristics of MSP and its potential interactions with other molecules or nanoparticles.

The photophysical properties of Cu(II) complexes with 5,10,15,20-meso-tetrakis(phenyl)porphyrin and 5,10,15,20-meso-tetrakis(N-methylpyridium-4-yl)porphyrin were examined by luminescence and femtosecond time-resolved absorbance methods respectively. These studies were supported by DFT and TD-DFT calculations which highlight the important role played by a ligand-to-metal charge-transfer states in directing the system towards either intersystem crossing to the triplet hypersurface or coordinative expansion to a five-coordinate quasi-stable intermediate. The latter processes occurs when the porphyrin is photolyzed in the presence of suitably located Lewis bases. Femtosecond time resolved absorbance measurements on Cu(II)-5,10,15,20-meso-tetrakis(N-methylpyridium-4-yl)porphyrin confirm that the coordinative expansion in water occurs in approximately 700 fs while crossing to the triplet hypersurface takes approximately 140 fs in the same solvent. These processes are mutually exclusive, but both can occur simultaneously depending on the environment of the porphyrin. The ratio of the two processes depends on the relative orientation of the Lewis base with respect to the copper atom at the time of excitation. As a consequence, copper porphyrins such as these, are excellent probes to the environment of the porphyrin, and can be used to identify the location of the porphyrin when interacting with DNA fragments.

Evaluation of the mobility behavior of radionuclides in highly saline and alkaline conditions is a major concern for performance assessment of radioactive waste disposal. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of up to 2.8 mol/kgsolution content of NaNO3, onto the solubility and the sorption of U(VI) in a hardened cement-paste (HCP) prepared from an ordinary Portland cement (CEM I). To avoid the interference of the high salt concentration (and ionic strength) and because of expected low solubility of uranium under such alkaline conditions, the time-resolved laser fluorescence (TRLFS) was selected to measured accurate U(VI) concentration in solution using the standard addition method in 85% H3PO4 to limit dilution and matrix effects and allows determining of resulting [U(VI)] in solution with acceptable precision for distribution factor (Rd) both in sorption and desorption experiments. The operational solubility limit measured at high ionic strength is lowered by a factor 3 compared to the reference cementitious condition, with the Rd values decrease by ca. a factor 4. Sorption of U(VI) appears to be reversible under these conditions.

A powder synthesis of PbMoO₄ from ancient lead (Pb) and deeply purified commercial MoO₃ powders was performed using a wet chemistry technique to achieve the low radioactivity scintillator for neutrinoless double beta decay search in ¹⁰⁰Mo. The synthesized powders were used to grow single crystals of PbMoO₄ by a Czochralski technique in Ar environment. The luminescence and scintillation properties were measured with excitations using UV, X- and γ-rays in temperature range of 10-300 K. Annealing of the grown PMO crystal in air atmosphere enhanced the scintillation light yield by ~3 orders of magnitude compared to that measured before annealing. The scintillation light yield of grown PMO crystal at 10 K is found to be 127% to that of a reference PMO crystal under 662 keV γ-rays excitation from a ¹³⁷Cs source. The background measurement of the grown crystal performed at 50 K shows negligible activity from ²¹⁰Pb compared to that of reference PMO crystal. These preliminary performances show that the PMO crystal grown from ancient Pb and deeply purified MoO₃ powders has the great potential to be used as cryogenic scintillator for the neutrinoless double beta decay search in ¹⁰⁰Mo.

In March 2013, a novel avian influenza A H7N9 virus was emerged in China, which cause rapidly progressive pneumonia and with a high fatality rate. Serologic studies to evaluate neutralizing antibodies of infected patients and birds are invaluable tools for immunogenicity research of H7N9 and epidemiological investigation. Conventional neutralization assays are laborious and time-consuming which also hampered by biosafety requirement. In this study, We construct and produce pseudovirus bearing the full-length hemagglutinin (HA) of H7N9 virus in the Env-defective, luciferase-expressing HIV-1 backbone. The production of lentiviral pseudovirus was analysed by HA gene specific real-time reverse-transcription PCR, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Western Blot assay to prove the nucleic acid replication, the morphology of virus, and the expression of HA protein in pseudovirus. After that pseudovirus based inhibition assay was established to detect neutralizing antibodies of a panel of serum samples. Our results demonstrated that H7N9 pseudovirus which had single-cycle infection was generated. By comparing the neutralization antibody titers, pseudovirus based neutralization test could be recognized as an alternative of conventional microneutralization (MN). Hence, we conclude that it is possible to use pseudovirus inhibition assay to screen sera samples, as well as evaluate vaccine-induced neutralizing antibodies against H7N9 virus.

The functionalization of copolyfluorenes containing dicyanophenanthrene units by closo-decaborate anion is described. Target copolyfluorenes were analyzed using UV-vis, luminescence, NMR and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The effect of complexation with the closo-decaborate anion on the photophysical properties was studied both experimentally and theoretically. The PL data indicate an efficient charge transfer from fluorene to the dicyanophenanthrene units coordinated to closo-decaborate. The coordination of closo-decaborate clusters to the nitrile groups of copolyfluorenes provides an important route to new materials for sensors and light-emitting devices while at the same time serving as a platform for further study of the nature of boron clusters.

The present work demonstrates the optimization of the ligand structure in the series of bis-phosphine oxide and carbamoylphosphine oxide representatives for efficient coordination of Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions with the formation of the complexes exhibiting high Tb3+- and Eu3+-centered luminescence. The analysis of the stoichiometry and structure of the lanthanide complexes obtained by XRD method reveals the great impact of the bridging group nature between two phosphine oxide moieties on the coordination mode of the ligands with Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions. The bridging imido-group facilitates the deprotonation of imido-bisphosphine oxide ligand followed by the formation of tris-complexes. The spectral and PXRD analysis of the separated colloids indicates that the high stability of the tris-complexes provides their safe conversion into polystyrenesulfonate-stabilized colloids under the solvent exchange method. The red Eu3+-centered luminescence of the tris-complex exhibits the same specificity in the solutions and the colloids. The pronounced luminescent response on the antibiotics ceftriaxone allows to sense the latter in aqueous solutions with the LOD value equal to 0.974 M.

Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are promising bioimaging nanoprobes due to their excellent photostability. As one of the most commonly-used lanthanide activators, Tm3+ ions have perfect ladder-type electron configuration and can be directly excited by bio-friendly near-infrared-II (NIR-II) wavelengths. Here, the emission characteristics of Tm3+-doped nanoparticles under laser excitations of different near-infrared-II wavelengths were systematically investigated. The 1064 nm, 1150 nm and 1208 nm lasers are proposed to be three excitation strategies with different response spectra of Tm3+ ions. Particularly we found that 1150 nm laser excitation enables intense three-photon 475 nm emission, which is nearly 100 times stronger than that excited by 1064 nm excitation. We further optimized the luminescence brightness after investigating the luminescence quenching mechanism of bare NaYF4:Tm (1.75%) core. After growing inert shell, ten-fold increase of emission intensity was achieved. Combining the advantages of NIR-II wavelength and the higher-order nonlinear excitation, a promising facile excitation strategy was developed for the application of thulium-doped upconversion nanoparticles in single nanoparticle imaging and cancer cell microscopic imaging.

The mechanisms of formation of induced intrinsic and impurity radiative states, which consist of intrinsic and impurity electron-hole trapping centers in irradiated Ca2P2O7-Mn and Ca2P2O7 phosphates, were investigated using thermoactivation and vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy methods. These centers are excited at photon energies of 4.0 eV and 4.5 eV, which are within the matrix's transparency region. New radiative induced states at 3.06 eV and 2.92 eV are demonstrated to be generated upon the excitation of anions by photons with energies of 5.0 and 5.64 eV. This process is due to charge transfer from the ion to the impurities, specifically Mn^2+ O^2- Mn^2+ and the neighboring ion O^2- (P2O7)^4-. Furthermore, upon the excitation of matrix anions with photon energies exceeding the band gap (8.0 - 8.25 eV), electron trapping by impurities such as Mn^2+ and (P2O7)^4- ions results.

A series of LaF₃:Ce³⁺ phosphors for the application in photodynamic therapy is synthesized using a one-stage solvothermal synthesis. The conditions providing the maximum intensity of UV- and X-ray-excited luminescence, lowest size and highest colloidal stability of the phosphor nanoparticles are found to respectively include cerium content 5% mol., use of ethanol as the reaction medium for the solvothermal synthesis and addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone as a stabilizer in an optimized amount.

Understanding the processes that govern the transformation of the landscape through time is essential for exploring the evolution of a coastal area. Coastal landscapes are dynamic sites, with their evolution strongly linked with waves and sea-level variations. Geomorphological features in the coastal area, such as beachrock formations and dune fields, can function as indicators of the coastal landscape evolution through time. However, our knowledge of the chronological framework of coastal deposits on the Aegean coasts is limited. Optically stimulated luminescence dating techniques are deemed to be very promising indirect dating of the coastal sediments, especially when they are linked with archaeological evidence. The dating of the sediments from different sediment core depths, as they are determined by the method of luminosity, allows us to calculate the rate of sediment deposition over time. Additionally, the coastal evolution and stability were studied from 1945 until today, with the use of aerial photographs and satellite images. This paper presents the 6000 ka years evolution of a coastal landscape based on geomorphological, archaeological, and radio-chronological data. Based on the results, the early stages of the Ammoudara beach dune field appear to be formed ~9.0 – 9.6 ka BP, while the OSL ages from 6 m depth represented the timing of its stabilization (OSL ages ~5–6 ka). This indicates that the dune field appears to already have been formed long before the Bronze Age (5-10 ka BP) and became stabilized with only localized episodes of dune reactivation occurring, while high coastal erosion rates are found in modern times.

In the periodic table of the elements, ruthenium is ideally placed, right in the middle, just above iron. And like iron, it possesses several oxidation states, with +2 and +3 being the most common. Accordingly, ruthenium chemistry is extremely rich and well developed, ruthenium complexes show excellent catalytic aptitude, tremendous redox capacity, and intriguing biological activity. However, in the design of sensors, the use of ruthenium complexes remains scarce, despite valuable electro- and photochemical properties. Therefore, there is an opportunity here, and ruthenium-based complexes might become one day, key players in sensing technology. Starting ourselves a new research project with ruthenium-based sensors, writing this review was essential to see the current state of research in the field, to identify opportunities, and to have an overview of state-of-the-art examples.

The highest efficiency solar cell won in the efficiency race does not always give the most excellent annual energy yield in the real world solar condition that the spectrum is ever-changing. The study of the radiative coupling of the concentrator solar cells implied that the efficiency could increase by the recycle of the radiative recombination generated by the surplus current in upper junction. Such configuration is called by a super-multi-junction cell. We expanded the model in the concentrator solar cell to non-concentrating installation. It was shown that this super-multi-junction cell configuration was found robust and can keep the maximum potential efficiency (50 % in realistic spectrum fluctuation) up to 10 junctions. The super-multi-junction cell is also robust in the bandgap engineering of each junction. Therefore, the future multi-junction may not be needed to tune the bandgap for matching the standard solar spectrum, as well as relying upon artificial technologies like ELO (Epitaxial lift-off), wafer-bonding, mechanical-stacking, and reverse-growth, but merely uses up-right and lattice-matching growth technologies. We have two challenging techniques; one is the optical cap layer that may be the directional photon coupling layer in the application of the photonics technologies, and another is the high-quality epitaxial growth with almost 100 % of the radiative efficiency.

The development of efficient luminescent systems, such as microcavities, solid state lasers, integrated optical amplifiers, optical sensors is the main topic in glass photonics. The building blocks of these systems are glass-ceramics activated by rare earth ions because they exhibit specific morphologic, structural and spectroscopic properties. Among various materials that could be used as nanocrystals to be imbedded in silica matrix, tin dioxide presents some interesting peculiarities, e.g. the presence of tin dioxide nanocrystals allows increase in both solubility and emission of rare earth ions. Here, we focus our attention on Er³⁺ - doped silica – tin dioxide photonic glass-ceramics fabricated by sol-gel route. Although the SiO₂-SnO₂:Er³⁺ could be fabricated in different geometrical systems: thin films, monoliths and planar waveguides we herein limit ourselves to the monoliths. The effective role of tin dioxide as luminescence sensitizer for Er³⁺ ions is confirmed by spectroscopic measurements and detailed fabrication protocols are discussed.

Gallium oxide (Ga2O3) is an emerging wide bandgap semiconductor promising a wide range of important applications. However, mass production of high-quality crystalline Ga2O3 still suffers from limitations associated with poor reproducibility and low efficiency. Low-temperature grown amorphous Ga2O3 demonstrates comparable performance with its crystalline counterparts. Lanthanide Er3+-doped Ga2O3 (Ga2O3: Er) possesses great potential for developing light-emitting devices, photodetectors and optical waveguides. The host circumstance can exert a crystal field around the lanthanide dopants and strongly influence their photoluminescence properties. Here we present a systematical study of the impact of amorphous-to-crystalline transition on the upconversion photoluminescence in Ga2O3: Er thin films. Through controlling the growth temperature of Ga2O3: Er films, the upconversion luminescence of as-grown thin films are strongly enhanced over 100 times. Moreover, the variation of photoluminescence reflects the amorphous-to-crystalline transformation of the Ga2O3: Er thin films. These results will aid further design of favorable optoelectronic devices integrated with lanthanide-doped Ga2O3 thin films.

The Sm3+/Gd3+ co-doped glasses in the B2O3–GeO2–PbO and B2O3–GeO2–Bi2O3 systems have been synthesized in the composition range of 40B2O3–40GeO2–(15-17)PbO(Bi2O3)–(3-2)Sm2O3–(2-1)Gd2O3 and 42.5B2O3–42.5GeO2–(11.25-12.75)PbO(Bi2O3)–(2.25-1.5)Sm2O3–(1.5-0.075)Gd2O3. The physical, structural, and spectral properties of the produced glasses have been studied. The fabricated glass samples demonstrated changes in temperature-sensitive luminescence parameters in 298-673 K temperature range. We found out several photoluminescence bands attributed with transitions from different Stark sublevels. By using a combination of two temperature sensitive and one non-sensitive transitions we calculated fluorescence intensities ratio (FIR). This procedure made it possible to increase the sensitivity of luminescence thermometry in several times. Such method could be very useful for the luminescent thermometry materials based on Ln3+ ions with multiplied f-f transitions.

Lead-free ferroelectric perovskite N-methyl-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium)–ammonium triio-dide, MDABCO-NH₄I₃, nanocrystals are embedded in three different polymer fibers fabricated by the electrospinning technique. The nanofibers, which are very flexible and have a high Young modulus, behave as active piezoelectric energy harvesting sources that produce a piezoelectric voltage coefficient up to geff = 3.6 VmN-1 and show a blue intense luminescence band at 325 nm. In this work, the pyroelectric coefficient is reported for the MDABCO-NH₄I₃ perovskite inserted in electrospun fibers. At the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition, the embedded nanocrystals display a pyroelectric coefficient as high as 194×10-6 Cm-2k-1, within the same order of magnitude as that reported for the state-of-the-art bulk ferroelectric triglycine sulfate (TGS). The perovskite nanocrystals embedded into the polymer fibers remain stable, and no degradation is caused by oxidation.

In our recent works we reported that physical and chemical characteristics of serum can vary in relation to the psychic activity of an individual depending on whether it is oriented to stress or relaxation. We wandered if these observations could be accompanied by an appreciable modification of the Ph, electric conductivity and Delayed Luminescence of the same serum samples. Our preliminary data may suggest that the serum pH could significantly increase during a Relaxation Response intervention while electric conductivity seems to decrease. Moreover, Delayed Luminescense could vary in the same subject according to the Relaxation Response practice. According to our proof of concept study, we postulate the appearance of a coherent system within the blood samples analyzed after the Relaxation Response. Further researches and some technical development are needed to support our preliminary findings.

A hydrothermal technique with microwave heating (200 °C, 2 hours, 2 magnetrons, 2.45 GHz) was modified to obtain UV-C luminescent LaPO4: Pr3+ colloidal nanorods for the potential use in X-ray cancer theranostics. For further possible biofunctionalization, a compound of tartaric acid formed under basic conditions was used as a coating and stabilizing agent to provide colloidal properties to the surface of nanoparticles in basic to neutral aqueous media, which was confirmed by zeta potential measurements. In addition, the colloidal properties and clustering processes of synthesized LaPO4:Pr3+ nanorods in aqueous solutions with different pH values were studied in real time using a highly sensitive laser ultramicroscope operating according to the “light-sheet” scheme. A comparative analysis of the transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and high-energy spectroscopy showed the different effects of synthesis parameters on the morphological, crystalline and luminescent properties of the obtained nanorods. Through optimization of the synthesis parameters, stable aqueous solutions of m-LaPO4:Pr3+ nanorods with sizes less than 30 nm and an intensity of UV-C luminescence equal to 5-10% of the unmodified nanofibers were obtained.

The relaxation processes induced by an exposure of the Ar matrices doped with CH4 (0.1 – 10%) to an electron beam were studied with a focus on the dynamics of radiolysis products – H atoms, H2 molecules, CH radicals, and energy transfer processes. Three channels of energy transfer to dopant and radiolysis products were discussed: by free charge carriers, free excitons and photons from the “intrinsic source” provided by emission of the self-trapped excitons. Radiolysis products along with the total yield of desorbing particles were monitored in a correlated manner. Analysis of methane transformation reactions induced by free excitons showed that the CH radical can be considered as a marker of the CH3 species. The competition between exciton self-trapping and energy transfer to the dopant and radiolysis products has been demonstrated. A nonlinear concentration behavior of the H atoms in doped Ar matrices has been established. Real-time correlated monitoring of optical emissions (H atom and CH3 radicals), particle ejection, and temperature revealed a nonmonotonic behavior of optical yields with a strong luminescence flash after almost an hour of exposure, which correlated with explosive pulse of particle ejection and temperature. The connection of this phenomenon with the processes of energy transfer and radical-radical recombination is discussed.

Current paper reviews applications of luminescence bioassays for monitoring low-intensity factors, namely, radioactivity of different types (alpha, beta and gamma), and bioactive compounds (humic substances and fullerenols). Luminescence intensity is taken as a physiological parameter of luminous organisms. High rates of luminescence response can provide (1) a proper number of experiments under comparable conditions and, therefore, proper statistical processing, with this being highly important for ‘noisy’ low-dose exposures; (2) non-genetic, i.e. biochemical and physicochemical mechanisms of cellular response, in accordance to “exposome” concept. Bioassays based on luminous marine bacteria, their enzymes, and fluorescence coelenteramide-containing proteins were used to compare results of low-intensity exposures at cellular, biochemical and physicochemical levels, respectively. Results of the cellular exposures were discussed in terms of hormesis concept. Bioluminescence time dependence under low-dose radiation exposures corresponded to hormesis or threshold models; no bioluminescence monotonic dependency on intensity of exposure (dose rate, radioactivity, concentration) was found. Bioluminescence activation and absence of its dependency on intensity of exposure can be accepted as features of cellular adaptive response. Changes of biological luminescence were analyzed and discussed for bioassays of lower organization level – enzymes and florescent protein.

Photophysical properties of a series of bis(arylydene)cycloalkanone dyes with various donor substituentns are studied by quantum chemistry. Their capacity for luminescence and nonradiative relaxation through trans-cis isomerization is related to their structure, in particular, to the donor capacity of the substituents and the degree of conjugation due to the central cycloalkanone moiety. It is shown that cyclohexanone central moiety introduces distortions and disrupts the conjugation, thus leading to a nonmonotonic change in their properties. The increasing donor capacity of the substituents causes increase in the HOMO energy (raise of the oxidation potential) and decrease in the HOMO-LUMO gap, which results in the red shift of the absorption spectra. The ability of the excited dye to relax through fluorescence or through trans-cis isomerization is governed by the height of the barrier between the Franck–Condon and S1-S0 conical intersection regions on the potential energy surface of the lowest π-π* excited state. This barrier also correlates with the donor capacity of the substituents and the degree of conjugation between the central and donor moieties. The calculated fluorescence and trans-cis isomerization rates are in good agreement with the observed fluorescence quantum yields.

The reliable online analysis of volatile compounds in exhaled breath remains a challenge as a plethora of molecules occur in different concentration ranges (i.e. ppt to %), and need to be detected against an extremely complex background matrix. While this complexity is commonly addressed by hyphenating a specific analytical technique with appropriate preconcentration and/or preseparation strategies prior to detection, we herein propose the combination of three analytical tools based on truly orthogonal measurement principles as an alternative solution: field-asymmetric ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy-based sensors utilizing substrate-integrated hollow waveguides (iHWG), and luminescence sensing (LS). These three tools have been integrated into a single compact analytical platform suitable for online exhaled breath analysis. The analytical performance of this prototype system was tested via artificial breath samples containing nitrogen (N2), oxygen (O2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and acetone as a model volatile organic compound (VOC) commonly present and detected in breath. Functionality of the combined system was demonstrated by detecting these analytes in their respectively breath-relevant concentration range and mutually independent of each other generating orthogonal yet correlated analytical signals. Finally, adaptation of the system towards the analysis of real breath samples during future studies is discussed.
