Baía de Todos os Santos is the second largest bay in Brazil and is home to important ecosystems, including estuarine systems and mangroves. However, studies on the seasonal variability of its soil properties and composition are still scarce. For this study, soil and leaf samples were seasonally collected from mangrove forests at four sites (Cacha Prego, Ponta Grossa, Ilha de Maré, and Pitinga), which are representative of different environmental conditions within the BTS. Soil physicochemical properties, soil composition and partition of Fe forms were determined, and analysis of minerals by Scanning Electron Microscope, was performed on soil samples. Isotopic ratios (δ13C, δ15N) were also determined on soil and leaf samples. Soils showed significant spatial and temporal changes affecting both their properties (pH, Eh) and their composition (TOC, pyrite and Fe oxyhydroxide contents). Clear spatial changes were observed in redox potential, significantly affecting the concentrations of the different geochemical forms of Fe, particularly the concentrations of crystalline oxyhydroxydes and pyrite in one of the studied sites. In three of the study sites, pyrite crystals showed clear evidence of degradation associated with sandy soils. Finally, δ13C and N/C ratios in soils seem to suggest a mixed origin of organic matter.

One of the largest in the archipelago silver-copper mineralisation at Mount Sigurdf′ellet in West Spitsbergen Island was found in 1990 by Russian geologists. Firstly genesis was caused exclusively with hydrothermal ore migration of a substance from the enclosing sandstone and siltstone of the Devonian age. But subsequent work on the ore and nearest rocks of the basement gave a new factual material on the geochemical characteristics of potential sources of metals and found new for this mineral occurrence - gold mineralization. Similarity of geochemical associations of Sigurd ore occurrence with nearby upper Proterozoic marble as the first likely source of ore substance and the second - caused by carbonate-containing streaks in Low Devonian sediments. Ore-formation, probably due to repeated hydrothermal processes and was completed in a period of tectono-magmatic activity in Jurassic-Cretaceous time.

The Mazenod Lake region of the southern Great Bear Magmatic Zone (GBMZ) of the Northwest Territories, Canada comprises the north-central portion of the Faber volcano-plutonic belt. Mazenod geology is dominated by rhyodacite to basaltic-andesite ignimbrite sheets with interlayered volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks dominated by fine-grained laminated tuff sequences. Much of the intermediate to mafic nature of volcanic rocks is disguised by low-intensity but pervasive metasomatism. The region is affected by a series of coalescing magmatic-hydrothermal systems that host the Sue-Dianne magnetite-hematite IOCG deposit and several related showings including magnetite, skarn, and IOA styles of alteration ± mineralization. Exposed at surface are dominantly mid to upper levels of these systems, with underlying batholith, pluton and stocks exposed along the periphery, as well as locally within volcanic rocks associated with more intense alteration and mineralization. Widespread alteration includes potassic and sodic metasomatism, and silicification with structurally controlled giant quartz complexes. Localized tourmaline, skarn, magnetite-actinolite, and iron-oxides occur within structural breccias, and where most intense formed the Sue-Dianne Cu-Ag-Au diatreme-like breccia deposit. Magmatism, volcanism, hydrothermal alteration and mineralization formed during a negative tectonic inversion within the Wopmay Orogen. This generated a series of oblique offset rifted basins with continental style arc magmatism and extensional structures unique to GBMZ rifting. All significant hydrothermal centres in the Mazenod region occur along and at the intersections of crustal faults either unique to or put under tension during the GBMZ inversion.

The Neoproterozoic (900-600 Ma) Arabian Nubian Shield is an example of Precambrian plate tectonics and arc accretion. The Western Ethiopian Shield (the southern extension of ANS) is geo-tectonically a characteristic of lower grades of Metavolcano-sedimentary sequences of ANS intruded by associated felsic granitoid and mafic bodies and at the same time it is contained of gneisses rocks of the MB. The Gold mineralization and alterations initiating throughout the Tulu Kapi syenite are in the form of in enechelon vein arrays and related structures, which are controlled by conjugate shear zones in the syenite and steep N-S striking structures. The earliest recorded deformation and alterations revealed the syenite albitization which is the one hosting for gold mineralization and it has been widely overprinted by multistage hydrothermal system that appears to have been controlled mainly by veins, crackle zones, fractures and minor breccia zones. Primary gold mineralization displays spatial and temporal relationship with Tulu Kapi syenite and the Kapi gabbro, both of which host gold mineralization, are 738.3±2.6 Ma and 699.5±2.7 Ma period, respectively, in a volcanic arc subduction syn-collisional tectonic setting by the fractionation of underplated, LREE-enriched basaltic magma with substantial crustal input to possible crustal melting. The underplated basaltic magma had been sourced from LREE-enriched mantle by subduction of sediment laden crustal slabs at a subduction zone. Fractional crystallization involved formation of Ca-rich plagioclase, which continually reacted with hydrothermal fluids to more fractionated Na-rich plagioclase, forming the gold mineralization hosting altered (albitized) syenites. The Pan-African orogeny, and associated regional metamorphism and magmatism, generated large-scale movements of gold and base metal-bearing fluids in the crust, channelized along complex fractures into regional NE-SW foliation in Ethiopia (e.g., western Ethiopia). However, these gold-rich alkalic magmas are so modified by crustal processes that evidence of their genetic relationship with gold become obscured. The primary ore mineral assemblage of quartz veins and veinlets, and associated mineralised syenite within Tulu Kapi area consists of pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, hematite, and gold. The major and trace element composition of ore- forming fluids from the mineralised vein, barren and granitic intrusion is still largely unknown, yet could provide important and more direct evidence for the fluid source(s). This is vital in establishing a direct genetic link between syenite and other granitoid intrusion, and gold mineralization.

Asbestos, also known by its commercial name of amianthus, has been a widely used material in various industries due to its unique properties. However, its extensive use has led to serious consequences for human health, most notably asbestosis, an irreversible chronic lung disease. Asbestosis increases the risk of lung cancer and malignant meso-thelioma both fatal diseases. To understand the role of asbestos in human health, applied sciences such as microscopy (optical and scanning electron microscopy) and geochemistry are fundamental to characterize the mineral fibers. In previous work we used these technics to characterize the fibers and, in this paper, we explore their issues associated with asbestos and asbestosis, as well as the challenges of science communication strategies to effectively inform society and workers about these risks. The lack of scientific culture, in general, leads to the lack of public awareness of risks, and to address these challenges, it is essential to implement effective communication and outreach plans and strategies, including the visualization of the fibers to understand why there may be a problem if inhaled. Educational campaigns, guidelines and plans that are informative and action-able, targeting workers, communities and the public about asbestos risks are very im-portant. General knowledge of mineralogy and geochemistry is needed and providing proper scientific communication and dissemination may help to cover the knowledge gap. We use examples and experience in Spain and Italy to illustrate this subject.

Hot spring is a hot water that is naturally occurring on the surface from the underground and typically heated by subterranean volcanic activity and local underground geothermal gradient. There are four main hot springs in Rwanda such as: Kalisimbi, Bugarama, Kinigi and Nyamyumba former name Gisenyi hot springs. It is often believed that soaking in hot springs is a great way which naturally detox human skin. This research focused on the geochemical analysis of Nyamyumba hot springs located near the fresh water of Lake Kivu for the purpose of understanding its healing capacity and safety. Nyamyumba hot springs are located in the western branch of the East African Rift System and they are located near Virunga volcanic complex, explaining the rising and heating mechanism of water. The concentrations of Sulfate, Iron, Ammonia, Alkalinity, Silica, Phosphate, Salinity, Alkalinity, and Conductivity using standard procedures were measured. The results showed that hot spring water has higher concentrations of chemicals compared to Lake Kivu water and the geochemistry of these hot springs maybe associated with rock dissolution by hot water. The measured parameters were compared with World Health Organization (WHO) standards for recreational waters and it has been identified that Nyamyumba hot springs are safe to use in swimming and therapeutic activities.

This research evaluates the mineral ions and their concentrations in formation water from five well samples of the Bibi Hakimeh oil field. The study reveals the presence of calcium (Ca2+), so-dium (Na+), and magnesium (Mg2+) cations, as well as sulfate (SO42-), bicarbonate (HCO3-), and chloride (Cl-) anions, which are soluble in water within the Bibi Hakimeh oil formation. Fur-thermore, mineral deposits of CaSO4, CaSO4.2H2O, CaCO3, and MgCO3 are investigated. The findings highlight the significant formation of calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate mineral deposits under the operating conditions of the Bibi Hakimeh oil well. Additionally, the study examines the interaction between rock and water of the Bibi Hakimeh formation, revealing a notable correlation between the concentration of calcium and magnesium ions and the water-rock reaction in this field

The impact of riparian wetlands on the cycling, retention and export of nutrients from land to water varies according to local environmental conditions and is poorly resolved in catchment management approaches. To determine the role a specific wetland might play in a catchment mitigation strategy, an alternative approach is needed to the high frequency and spatially detailed monitoring programme that would otherwise be needed. Here, we present a new approach using a combination of novel and well-established geochemical, geophysical and isotope ratio approaches. This was developed and tested against a 2-year high-resolution sampling programme in a lowland permeable wetland in the Lambourn catchment, UK. The monitoring programme identified multiple pathways and water sources feeding into the wetland, generating large spatial and temporal variations in nutrient cycling, retention and export behaviours within the wetland. This complexity of contributing source areas and biogeochemical functions within the wetland were effectively identified using the new toolkit approach. We propose that this technique could be used to determine the likely net source/sink function of riparian wetlands prior to their incorporation into any catchment management plan, with relatively low resource implications when compared to a full high frequency nutrient speciation and isotope geochemistry-based monitoring approach.

Listwaenite rocks are widely spread in Fenja area of the Semail ophiolite of Oman and in Islam Abad area of the Neyriz ophiolite of Iran. There are three types of listwaenites found in these regions: silica-, carbonate-, and carbonate-silica (which includes dolomite, calcite, and magnesite. The alteration of host harzburgites started with hydrothermal alteration to serpentinite, followed by carbonation and silicification of serpentinite. Calcite- and magnesite-dolomite- listwaenites are more abundant in the Fenja area of Oman, while dolomite-listwaenites are more abundant in Islam Abad area in Iran. The mineralogy of listwaenites varies in both Iran and Oman; common minerals include quartz, calcite, goethite, magnesite, dolomite, serpentine, hematite, magnetite, Cr-mica, and Cr-spinel The major element chemistry of the different types of listwaenites in both Fenja and Islam Abad area generally comparable, and is largely similar to that of hydrothermally carbonated harzburgites, serpentinite, and listwaenites worldwide, despite spanning extraordinary and highly variable contents in major oxides, such as CaO, SiO2, MgO and LOI. Relict texture and common occurrence of Cr-spinel as well as the high concentrations of Cr, Ni and Co suggest that the protolith of the listwaenites in both regions was serpentinized harzburgites and serpentines. In comparison to the primary mantle and chondrite in spider diagrams, the Neyriz listwaenites have higher trace and REE element abundances than comparable listwaenites in the Fenja region. Harzburgite-normalized patterns of trace elements and REE in serpentinite and listwaenites overlap the average composition of harzburgite. PM-normalized trace element and REE patterns for serpentinized harzburgite and serpentinite show enrichment in Cs, U, Pb and Sr, with no Eu anomaly, comparable to mantle wedge serpentinites. The variable and high abundances of Ca, Mg, Ba, Zr, Sr, Pb, Zn, Mo and W in the carbonate- and silica-carbonate listwaenites, with unique Si enrichment and Mg, Na2O, Zr, Y, Ba, Sr, Rb, Cu, Pb, Sc, Cs, Nb, Mo and W. depletion in silica listwaenites are indicative of large fluctuations in major and trace element mobility. Cr, Ni and Co were immobile during alteration Enrichment in Ca and Si could occur by internal or late outside supply. Ca, Mg and Si are conceivably the foremost mobile major components amid harzburgite and serpentinite carbonation with mobilization confirmed by formation of quartz and Mg-carbonate in silica-carbonate listwaenites and quartz in silica listwaenites. The listwaenites in Islam Abad and Fenja area were formed due to hydrothermal alteration of serpentinite along thrust faults and shear zones which acted as pathway for Ca and/or Si rich fluids. The intensity of deformation in Islamabad listwaenites has been higher than Fenja listwaenites as indicated by higher abundance of trace elements.

A new approach is presented for dynamic modeling of chemical and isotopic evolution of C1-3 during the hydrocarbon generation process. Based on systematic data obtained from published papers for pyrolysis of various hydrocarbon sources(type I kerogen/source rock, type II kerogen/source rock, type III kerogen/source rock, crude oil, asphalt, etc), the empirical evolution framework of chemical and isotopic composition of C1-3 during the hydrocarbon generation process was built. Although the empirical framework was built only by fitting large amount of pyrolysis data, the chemical and isotopic composition of C1-3 derived from the pyrolysis experiments all follow the evolution laws, convincing us that it is applicable to the thermal evolution process of various hydrocarbon sources. Based on the simplified formula of the isotopic composition of mixed natural gas at different maturities (δ13Cmixed) δ13Cmixed=(X〖*n〗_iA 〖*δ〗^13 C_iA+Y〖*n〗_iB 〖*δ〗^13 C_iB)/(X〖*n〗_iA+Y〖*n〗_iB ), it can be derived that the cumulative isotopic composition of alkane generated in certain maturity interval can be expressed by the integral of the product of instantaneous isotopic composition and instantaneous yield at certain maturity point, and then divided by the cumulative yield of alkane generated in corresponding maturity interval. Thus, the cumulative isotopic composition(A(X)), cumulative yield(B(X)), instantaneous isotope(C(X)),and instantaneous yield(D(x)) in the dynamic model comply with the following formula during the maturity interval of (X0-X) A(X)=(∫_(X_0)^X▒〖C(X)*D(X)dx〗)/(B(X)), where A(X) and B(X) can be obtained by fitting of pyrolysis data, and D(x) can also be obtained from the derivation of B(X). The dynamic model was applied on the pyrolysis data of Pingliang Shale to illustrate the quantitative evolution of cumulative yield ,instantaneous yield, cumulative isotope and instantaneous isotope of C1-3 with increasing maturity.The dynamic model can quantify the yield of methane, ethane and propane as well as δ13C1, δ13C2 and δ13C3 respectively during the hydrocarbon generation process, which is of great significance to evaluate the natural gas resources of hydrocarbon source rock with different maturity and to identify the origin and evolutionary process of hydrocarbons by chemical and isotopic data. Moreover, this model provides an approach to study the dynamic evolution of isotope series of C1-3 (including reversed isotopic series), which is hopeful to reveal the mechanism responsible for isotopic reversal when combined with post-generation studies.

The efficacy of predicting geochemical parameters with a 2-chain workflow using spectral data as the initial input is evaluated. Spectral measurements spanning the approximate 400-25000nm spectral range are used to train a workflow consisting of a non-negative matrix function (NMF) step, for data reduction, and a random forest regression (RFR) to predict 8 geochemical parameters. Approximately 175000 spectra with their corresponding chemical analysis were available for training, testing and validation purposes. The samples and their spectral and chemical parameters represent 9399 drillcore. Of those, approximately 20000 spectra and their accompanying analysis were used for training and 5000 for model validation. The remaining pairwise data (150000 samples) were used for testing of the method. The data are distributed over 2 large spatial extents (980 km2 and 3025 km2 respectively) and allowed the proposed method to be tested against samples that are spatially distant from the initial training points. Global R2 scores and wt.% RMSE on the 150000 validation samples are Fe(0.95/3.01), SiO2(0.96/3.77), Al2O3(0.92/1.27), TiO(0.68/0.13), CaO(0.89/0.41), MgO(0.87/0.35), K2O(0.65/0.21) and LOI(0.90/1.14), given as Parameter(R2/RMSE), and demonstrate that the proposed method is capable of predicting the 8 parameters and is stable enough, in the environment tested, to extend beyond the training sets initial spatial location.

Two peat cores from two bogs were used to reconstruct high–resolution changes in atmospheric Pb accumulation rate (Pb AR) in Belgium during the Roman period. The two records were compared to assess the reliability of peat cores as archives of atmospheric Pb deposition and to established histories of atmospheric emissions from anthropogenic sources. To address these issues we analyze Pb concentration and isotopes, using ICP-MS, LA-ICP-MS and MC-ICP-MS in two peat sections, spanning 1000 yr each. Lead concentrations in the two cores range from 0.1 to 60 μg g⁻¹, with the maxima between 15 and 60 μg g⁻¹. The average natural background of Pb AR was 0.005± 0.002 mg m^-2 yr^-1 and the maximum ranges from 0.7 to 1.2 mg m^-2 yr^-1 between 50 BC and AD 215. The highest Pb AR exceed the pre-Roman period values by a factor of 25-30. Pb isotopic composition indicates that mining and metallurgical activities were the predominant sources of pollution during the Roman period. The Pb AR and chronologies in the Belgian peat cores are consistent with those reported for other continental archives as lake sediments, peat and ice cores.

A 7.4 m long sediment core has been retrieved from the central part of Lake Vrana on the Island of Cres to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions. Lake Vrana is the deepest freshwater lake in Croatia, located in the karst region of the eastern Adriatic coast. A dated sediment sequence in Lake Vrana of 4.4 m spans the past 16.4 kyr, and features a dynamic sediment deposition until the beginning of the Holocene, including strong sediment input and supply to the lake by runoff sediments of dolomitic origin from the catchment in the period 16.4-14.4 cal kyr BP. High organic carbon content, which originates from mixed terrestrial and aquatic origins in the periods 14.4-13.3 cal kyr BP and 12.7-11.7 cal kyr BP, indicates fluctuating lake levels in shallow water environments during the late glacial to Holocene transition. The Holocene sequence indicates the development of more stable conditions and continuous sediment deposition, characterized by increasing trend of siliciclastic sediments delivered into the lake during the early Holocene (11.7-10 cal kyr BP), and dominantly from 8 to 4.4 cal kyr BP, indicating enhanced input and erosion, which coincides with humid and pluvial period, recorded in the central Mediterranean region. It is followed by sediments with high organic carbon content between 4.4 to 1.6 cal kyr BP, which points to higher lake productivity. Calcite sedimentation prevail between 1.6 to 0.4 cal kyr BP, indicating stable deeper-lake conditions, while dominantly siliciclastic sediments in the period 0.4-0.1 cal kyr BP indicate erosion during Little Ice Age (LIA), with enhanced precipitation and sediment discharge from the catchment. The re-establishment of calcite sedimentation has been observed over the last 100 years.

The study was performed to get the first insight of distribution of the low field volume magnetic susceptibility (MS) throughout the Zagreb city area, based on in-situ field measurements. Most interesting locations were selected for soil sampling and geochemical content was determined using ICP-OES. A geostatistical approach was applied on MS and geochemical results. Median value of 0.245 x 10-3 SI units is proposed to be used as relevant average MS value in Zagreb area. Mean concentrations of heavy metals in Zagreb soils (in µg/g) are: Pb (36.82), Zn (87.77), Cu (30.84), Cd (0.66), Cr (29.04), Co (11.89) and Ni (28.40), being relatively low in comparison with Croatian legislation and with European and world average. Boxplot analyses showed that 45% of studied elements do not show any anomaly, while the rest of elements mostly show only one weak anomaly and they are located at the same sites as MS anomalies. Statistical analysis found significant correlations between MS and following elements: Cd, Co, Fe, Mn, Na, Pb, Sb and Zn. In-situ MS measurements proved to be an efficient tool for initial screening of large areas in terms of elevated heavy elements concentrations, enabling cheap and fast assessment of state of environment.

Paleopeat-forming environments have an important effect on the dispersion and enrichment of trace elements in coal. The C3 coal seam of the Xuanwei Formation in eastern Yunnan was used as a case study to reconstruct the paleopeat-forming environment based on the coal facies parameters and geochemical characteristics, and its influence on trace element (including rare earth elements and yttrium, REY) enrichment was investigated. The C3 coal was classified as medium rank coking coal with an ultra-low moisture content, medium-high-ash yield, and low-medium volatile content. Compared to the average values for Chinese coals, Cu and V were enriched and Co was slightly enriched in the C3 coal. Compared with the average values for world coals, Cu and V were enriched, while several other trace elements were slightly enriched, including Co, Hf, Nb, Sc, Ta, Zn, and Zr in the C3 coal. The C3 coal was deposited in a low peat mainly limno-telmatic swamp, with deep water, weak hydrodynamic conditions, brackish to salty water, and reducing conditions. Trace elements, including Cu, V, Hf, Nb, Sc, Ta, Zr, and REY, are typically enriched in a limno-telmatic environment with fresh water, and reducing and weak hydrodynamic conditions. Additionally, REY and V are also significantly enriched in brackish water limno-telmatic conditions with the same depositional environment.

Speleothems have proven to be one of the most reliable terrestrial archives for palaeoclimate research. However, due to the complexity of karst systems, long-term monitoring and high-resolution analyses of the cave atmosphere and water geochemistry have become essential to better constrain the factors that control calcite growth and how geochemical palaeoclimate proxies are encoded into speleothems. While calcite precipitation incorporates the palaeoclimate signals into the speleothem fabric, certain conditions in caves can favour dissolution, which may form hiatuses or even destroy these signals. In extreme cases, in-cave dissolution by dripwater can form cup-shaped features (i.e., corrosion cups), which were the main focus of this study. The study site in Postojna Cave, Slovenia, was investigated through cave climate monitoring and drip and cup water sampling, which took place during 2017–2021. We found that the cups are fed by low calcium drips as the consequence of the thin vadose zone above the cave. Due to the specific configuration of airflow pathways, the study site accumulates high levels of CO2 (>10,000 ppm), which shifts low calcium dripwater into undersaturation. This causes dissolution on rock surfaces and speleothems on the cave floor. The results of this study have broader significance in addressing the suitability of cave environments and speleothems used in paleoclimate research.

Emerging of mass-spectroscopy with inductively-coupled plasma (ICP-MS) made possible to study the microelement composition of crude oil and its derivatives (with the limit of detection at the ppt level). We have studied the crude oil composition of some West Siberian and Tatarstan oilfields with the ICP-MS method to detect 50 rare, rare-earth, and other microelements. The elemental composition is reasonably comparable to their concentrations in ultrabasites whereas the contents of most of the elements are low to the limit. On the diagrams of rare-earth elements, one can see the prevalence of light lanthanides and positive europium anomaly. The study shows that crude oils have a specific microelement composition that stands out from other geological systems.

Soil, geochemical, microbiological and archaeological studies were conducted at eight settlements dating from the Paleolithic to Late Medieval and New Times near the Southern Trans-Urals mountains, Russia. The forest-steppe landscapes, rivers and abundance of mineral resources have attracted people to region since ancient times. Properties of cultural layer (CLs): close to neutral pH, well structured, absence of salinity, enrichment with exchangeable calcium and anthropogenic phosphorus (0.2–0.4%). The majority of CLs start from 3–25 cm and last up to 40–60 cm and contain 6–10% organic carbon (Corg), in a layer of 0–20 cm because modern processes are developing here, at Ishkulovo site (around 14th century) Corg decreases to 1.3%, because CL is below 80 cm and in the absence of fresh organic material it is mineralized. The content of microbial biomass of the 0–10 cm layer is 520–680 μg С/g of soil, microbes cause the emission of 0.2–1.0 μg C–CO2/g soil per h. The proximity of the studied sites to deposits of copper, chromium, zinc, manganese and Magnitogorsk Metallurgical and Uchaly processing plants creates geochemical anomalies of soils. Pollutants are also released into the CLs from bronze products, ore, ceramic fragments and raw materials from their manufacture. It leads to the concentration of pollutants of the 1st (arsenic, lead, zinc) and 2nd (cobalt, copper, nickel, chromium) hazard classes in the studied CLs, often in quantities higher than the clarke and less often – more than the allowable content for human health.

This study investigates the petroleum potential of the Middle Jurassic Khatatba Formation (Fm) in the Matruh Basin, northwestern Egypt. This formation shows in situ dual source and reservoir characteristics, where alternations of fine and coarse clastics were deposited during semi-arid and semi-humid conditions due to climate changes and Tethyan sea level fluctuations. The organic-rich shales and argillaceous siltstones are fair to very good/excellent (TOCm wt%: 0.91–3.07) source rocks. They are rich in late mature to early postmature mostly gas-prone organic facies C, which sourced the juxtaposing intraformational coarse clastics of the Lower Safa Member with gas and condensates. The source rocks show poor to fair gas generation potential (S2: 0.38–1.96, mg HC/g rock). The middle part of the Lower Safa Member shows excellent organic richness (TOCm wt%: 5.39 and 22.90) of early postmature gas-prone carbonaceous material and coal deposits. These coaly shale layers exhibit fair to excellent wet gas and condensate generation potential (S2: 4.51–27.43, mg HC/g rock). Maturation of the source rocks was related to the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous Tethyan rifting. The onset of oil generation occurred in the Early Cretaceous (~ 116 Ma ago), while the onset of gas generation occurred in the Oligocene (~ 24 Ma ago). Shales of the Lower Cretaceous Alam El Bueib Fm are primary sealing rocks, while carbonates and shales of the Khatatba Fm are secondary sealing rocks. Trap types are structural, formed during the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous rifting of the Matruh Basin. Sandstones of the Upper Safa Member show upward increases in kaolinite and exhibit low-quality tight sandstone reservoirs. The Lower Safa Member sandstones show better gas reservoir quality with lower shale volumes. Operationally, the Lower Safa sandstone reservoirs in the Imhotep W-1X well are not suitable for gas production because they are ductile and show a high decline in production and pressure. Overall, the petroleum system of the Khatatba Fm shows mainly fair hydrocarbon potential in the study area.

As the largest accretionary orogen in the world, the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) has continuous juvenile crustal growth in the Phanerozoic. The northern margin of the North China Craton(NCC) and its adjacent area is the eastern segment of the CAOB, and is a key area to study the geological evolution of Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO). In the Permian, the west of the northern margin of NCC belongs to a post-collision extensional environment, and the east belongs to a subduction stage. But, As a connecting area, the Permian evolution of PAO in the middle of northern margin of NCC has not been systematically studied. In order to fill the blank and understand the temporal and spatial continuous evolution process of PAO, this paper focused on the Permian granitic rocks in the Chifeng area, zircon U-Pb dating and the geochemical analysis of the whole rock main and trace elements were conducted in order to build a granite chronological framework, discuss the genesis and tectonic background of the granite rocks as well as the magma-tectonic evolution history in the Chifeng area. Zircon U-Pb dating results of 8 samples are 269±1 Ma, 268±3 Ma, 260±4 Ma, 260±1 Ma, 260±1 Ma, 255±2 Ma, 254±2 Ma, 256±1Ma, which showed that the Permian granitic rocks had undergone three stages of emplacement: (1) The monzogranite and syenite (294-284 Ma); (2) The monzogranite (269-260Ma) and (3) The monzogranite and syenite (256-254Ma). The Middle Permian magmatism (269-260Ma) was represented by the monzogranite assemblages with different grain sizes. The geochemical characteristics showed that they were high-potassium calc-alkaline-potassium dossonite series of granites formed in compressional environment, indicating there was a collision between the Xing’an-Mongolian Orogenic Belt (XMOB) and the North China Craton (NCC). During the Late Permian-Early Triassic (256-248Ma), the granites in the Chifeng area are dominated by the A-type and I-type granites of high-potassium calc-alkaline series formed under an extensional environments, which constituted typical "bimodal" rock assemblage combined with the coeval basic rocks, suggesting the study area was in an extensional environment where the subducting slab is fragmented during the collision between the XMOB and the NCC. According to emplacement time and occurrence location, the plutons are interpreted to have been generated by the subduction-collision of the Paleo-Asian oceanic crust beneath the NCC. This study provides strong evidence for Permian tectonic evolution and the characterization of the eventual closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean in the Chifeng City at the northern margin of the NCC.

The Pingbei area is the main accumulation area of oil and gas in the Xihu Sag. The phase characteristics of oil and gas in this area are complex, and the understanding of their genesis is still unclear. In this paper, based upon discussions of crude oil and natural gas geochemical data, integrated with local geological features, we discuss the sources, migration, and phase state characteristics of oil and gas in the Pingbei area of the Xihu Sag. The study results showed that the crude oil and natural gas in the Pingbei area are coal-derived and the oil and gas produced by the humic organic matter during the maturity stage. The oil and gas source correlation showed that crude oil and natural gas have good affinity with the Eocene Pinghu Formation (PF) coal-bearing source rocks. Crude oil has the characteristics of near-source accumulation and short-distance migration while natural gas is supplied from a dual source: the coal-derived hydrocarbon rocks of PH in the deep part of the study area, supplemented by the coal-derived hydrocarbon rocks of PH on the bottom of the slope, and adjacent hydrocarbon-bearing sub sag. The distribution characteristics and geochemical migration indices of hydrocarbon showed that the oil generated from the hydrocarbon source rocks of PH in the deep Pingbei area mainly migrates vertically along the fault connecting the reservoir and the source rocks to the trap, where it accumulates, while the natural gas exhibits deep and large faults that mainly migrate vertically, supplemented by its lateral migration along the composite transport system composed of faults and sandstone layers in the slope zone. The mechanisms of produced, exhausted, and geochromatographic effects (PGE), as well as evaporative fractionation (EF) and phase-controlled migration fractionation (PMF), result in the obvious discrepancy of hydrocarbon’s properties on the vertical profiles.

A series of precise data consisting of zircon U–Pb ages, whole-rock geochemistry and Sr–Nd–Hf isotope compositions from the Huhetaoergai granitic pluton was collected in this study and combined with data from the western Huhetaoergai, Zhuxiaogubuhe and Yagan granitic plutons to constrain the petrogenesis and tectonic setting of granitic plutons in the northern Ya-Gan fault zone, North Alxa, China. The Huhetaoergai pluton is composed of hornblende diorite, medium- to coarse-grained biotite adamellite and coarse-grained biotite adamellite with K-feldspar megacrysts. The U–Pb zircon ages of biotite adamellite are 220.5 ± 1.9 Ma and 226.5 ± 2.4 Ma. These granitoids are I-type granites with highly radiogenic initial ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr of 0.708085–0.735470, negative eNd(t) average values of −2.98–3.23 and high eHf(t) of 9–11.05. These features indicate the granitoids were formed from magmas generated from juvenile crust. We speculate that the granitoids of the Huhetaoergai pluton were emplaced during an episode of intense intraplate orogenic movement evolution in an extrusional setting after a period of extensional postcollisional intraplate evolution.

Cumulative effects of landscape disturbance in forested source water regions can alter the storage of fine sediment and associated phosphorus in riverbeds, shift nutrient dynamics and degrade water quality. Here, we examine longitudinal changes in major element chemistry and particulate phosphorus (PP) fractions of river-bed sediment in an oligotrophic river during environmentally sensitive low flow conditions. Study sites along 50 km of the Crowsnest River were located below tributary inflows from sub-watersheds and represent a gradient of increasing cumulative sedi-ment pressures across a range of land disturbance types (harvesting, wildfire, and municipal wastewater discharges). Major elements (Si2O, Al2O3, Fe2O3, MnO, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2O, Ti2O, V2O5, P2O5), loss on ignition (LOI), PP fractions (NH4CI-RP, BD-RP, NaOH-RP, HCI-RP and NaOH(85)-RP) and absolute particle size were evaluated for sediments collected in 2016 and 2017. While total PP concentrations were similar across all sites, bioavailable PP fractions (BD-RP, NaOH-RP) increased downstream with increased concentrations of Al2O3 and MnO and levels of landscape disturbance. This study highlights the longitudinal water quality impacts of increasing landscape disturbance on bioavailable PP in fine riverbed sediments and shows how the convergence of climate (wildfire) and anthropogenic (sewage effluent, harvesting, agriculture) drivers can produce legacy effects on nutrients.

The capacity and the mechanism of the adsorption of aqueous barium (Ba), cobalt (Co), strontium (Sr) and zinc (Zn) by Ecuadorian (NatAllo) and synthetic (SynAllo-1 and SynAllo-2) allophanes were studied as a function of contact time, pH and metal ion concentration using kinetic and equilibrium experiments. The mineralogy, nano-structure and chemical composition of the allophanes were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and specific surface area analyses. The evolution of adsorption fitted to a pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics, where equilibrium between aqueous metal ions and allophane was reached within < 10 min. The metal ion removal efficiencies varied from 0.7 to 99.7 % at pH 4.0 to 8.5. At equilibrium, the adsorption behavior is better described by the Langmuir model than by the Dubinin-Radushkevich model, yielding sorption capacities of 10.6, 17.2 and 38.6 mg/g for Ba^(2+), 12.4, 19.3 and 29.0 mg/g for HCoO_2^-, 7.2, 15.9 and 34.4 mg/g for Sr^(2+) and 20.9, 26.9 and 36.9 mg/g for Zn^(2+), respectively, by NatAllo, SynAllo-2 and SynAllo-1. The uptake mechanism is based on a physical adsorption process. Allophane holds great potential to remove aqueous metal ions and could be used instead of zeolites, montmorillonite, carbonates and phosphates for wastewater treatment.
