Chess is an interesting game for artificial intelligence research and an entertaining hobby and sport for a growing number of people. However, humans differ greatly in their ability to play. Typically, the Elo rating is used to determine a player's skill and to predict who will win. When differences in Elo are too great the weaker player is almost guaranteed to lose. While on one hand, the Elo rating allows players to be matched to equally well-playing opponents, it also to some degree restricts the games to be played between equally strong opponents since otherwise the result is known beforehand. Here a handicap system where stronger players remove pieces at the start of the game is evaluated. Specifically, the effect each removed piece or combination of pieces have on a player. Interestingly, pieces do not always reduce the Elo of a player by a predefined amount, but their effect depends strongly on the player's current Elo. The results presented here are from playing the computer engine Stockfish because data about humans playing this scheme is limited. However, the results make direct predictions about the effect of piece removal on Elo.

This research examines the effects of the implementation of an educational programme of mindfulness training using Virtual Reality (VR) with students in adapted vocational training. The aim of this programme is to instruct and strengthen attention and self-regulation skills in relation to the learning process, with the objective of reducing anxiety and impulsivity in students, contributing to promoting sustainability in education, as well as reducing inequalities. The development and implementation of this project was carried out in IES Teguise in Lanzarote (Spain) with 11 students with intellectual disabilities who used the Virtual Reality Mindfulness application called TRIPP for three months. The use of Virtual Reality offers immersive experiences, while mindfulness enables concentration, which directly contributes to higher academic performance. After the implementation of the programme, it is observed that the use of this emerging technology provides students with a sense of calm and well-being, which translates into improvements in their academic grades, promoting equal and quality education in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The rising challenge of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste necessitates efficient collection methods to mitigate environmental impacts. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is one of the Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) approaches utilized in this study. The Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) was used to rank each alternative according to the objective weight that AHP had produced. Also, sensitivity analysis was performed to determine how robust the findings were when considering equal weights and entropy weights to maximize PET waste collection techniques. The alternative achieved the objective of obtaining the best collection method, Threshold Plastic Bottle Waste Collection (Tpbw), out of all the three alternatives considered. Another MCDA approach, VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR), was used to compare the results and validate the ranking result achieved by the TOPSIS method. The VIKOR technique's validation of the TOPSIS approach showed that the outcomes were highly consistent. Data for the study were gathered from the archives of waste management companies on possible practices of plastic waste collection addressing costs, environmental impacts, social acceptance, feasibility, and efficiency. The findings provide a prioritized framework for enhancing PET waste collection strategies, contributing to sustainable waste management. Many criteria are considered when deciding the best collecting method for PET waste recycling, making it challenging. By using criteria importance, multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) was applied in this study, and the objective weight of the criteria was determined using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The five criteria considered in this study are Initial investment cost, Operational cost, Transportation cost, Environmental risk, Employment potential, and the objective weights allocated to them. AHP results 0.4952, 0.1997, 0.1565, 0.0870, and 0.0616 are respectively determined.

This study aims to automate the optimization of a Full-Range speaker in an SUV's audio system according to the equal loudness contours principle. The input signal, and frequency responses of the amplifier and speaker were transferred to Matlab. Using ideal filter parameters, ten parametric equalizer models were created, and the speaker output was obtained using the convolution technique. The same filter settings were applied to the vehicle multimedia system, and experimental results were obtained. The simulation and experimental results were compared, showing high similarity with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.9295 and an RMSE of 2.29. Results were compared with the ideal contour. The Pearson correlation coefficients for simulation and experimental results were 0.6341 and 0.6715, with RMSE values of 4.88 and 2.57, showing low similarity. Consequently, each parametric equalizer filter's parameters were optimized using a genetic algorithm. The optimized parameters were applied to the vehicle multimedia system, and results were compared with the ideal contour. The Pearson correlation coefficients for simulation and experimental results were 0.965 and 0.9661, with RMSE values of 2.12 and 1.48. These results indicate that optimization aligns the speaker output closer to the ideal contour, enhancing in-vehicle audio system performance and increasing user satisfaction.

This article combines the traditional definition of portfolio risk with minimum spanning tree based “interconnectedness risk" to improve the equal risk contribution portfolio performance. We use betweenness centrality to measure an asset’s importance in a market graph (network). After filtering the complete correlation network to a minimum spanning tree, we calculate the centrality score and convert it to a centrality heuristic. We develop an adjusted variance-covariance matrix using the centrality heuristic, to bias the model to assign peripheral assets in the minimum spanning tree higher weights. We test this methodology using the constituents of the S&P 100 index. The results show that the centrality equal risk portfolio can improve upon the base equal risk portfolio returns, with a similar level of risk. We observe that during bear markets, the centrality-based portfolio can surpass the base equal risk portfolio risk.

The manipulation of participant allocation in randomized controlled trials to achieve equal groups sizes may introduce allocation bias potentially leading to larger treatment effect estimates. This study aimed to estimate the proportion of nursing trials that have precisely equal group sizes and examine if there was an association with trial outcome. Data were extracted from a sample of 148 randomized controlled trials published in nursing science journals in 2017. One hundred trials (68%) had precisely equal group sizes. Respectively, a positive outcome was reported in 70% and 58% of trials with equal/unequal groups. Trials from Asia were more likely to have equal group sizes than those from the rest of the world. Most trials reported a sample size calculation (n=105, 71%). In a third of trials (n=36, 34%), the number of participants recruited precisely matched the requirement of the sample size calculation; this was significantly more common in studies with equal group sizes. The high number of nursing trials with equal groups may suggest nurses con-ducting clinical trials are manipulating participant allocation to ensure equal group size increasing the risk of bias.

To solve the problem of a uneven load for a dual-input counter-rotating transmission system, this research is based on Small Displacement Torsor Jacobian-Torsor theory.Considering the influence of the local parallel chain of a gearbox on the calculation accuracy of the backlash,the processing method of a meshing tooth pair parallel chain is proposed. The probability distribution of the tolerance band of gearbox manufacturing and assembly errors is modeled, the three-dimensional tolerance analysis model of a dual-input counter-rotating gearbox is established, and the Monte Carlo method is used to solve the backlash of the output end. The output backlash is solved with the Monte Carlo method, and the theoretical design backlash is combined with the output backlash to derive the gearbox side clearance range. The gearbox shaft system is analyzed statically, the range of the equal load coefficient is calculated, and the equal load performance optimization method based on the matching relationship between the gear backlash and the elastic shaft torsional stiffness is proposed. The correctness of the three-dimensional tolerance analysis combined with the elastic deflection angle used to optimize the equal load performance of the dual-input counter-rotating transmission system is verified by comparison with the relevant test data.

The phenomenon of interference is a characteristic of all waves. This paper reviews the interference of classical waves and of matter waves in quantum mechanics. In quantum mechanics, there are two interference mechanisms between identical particles. One is that the de Broglie wavelengths of two interference waves are the same, which is called the equal wavelength interference mechanism. The other is that the wavelengths of interference waves can also be different, in which case there should be an exchange term in additional to the direction term in the wave function. There is a fixed phase difference between the two terms, which causes interference. This is called exchange effect interference mechanism. We propose an experiment, which is simpler to what has been done, to show the exchange effect interference. There is a special case where two interference waves can satisfy both the two mechanisms. We propose an experiment to discriminate that in this case which mechanism plays a role on earth.

Exact and soliton type solutions have great importance in propagation of surface waves, fluid dynamics, optics, and many other elds of nonlinear sciences. In this study, the explicit and exact soliton type solutions for two space-time fractional Equal- Width (FEW) equations with conformable derivative are procured via the hyperbolic function approach. The wave type solutions are represented in some hyperbolic and trigonometric functions.

Equal-Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) is a method used to introduce severe plastic deformation into a metallic billet without changing its geometry. In special cases strain localization occurs and a pattern consisting of regions with high and low deformation (so-called shear and matrix bands) can emerge. This paper studies this phenomenon numerically adopting two-dimensional finite element simulations of one ECAP pass. The mechanical behavior of aluminum is modeled using phenomenological plasticity theory with isotropic or kinematic hardening. The effects of the two different strain hardening types are investigated numerically by systematic parameter studies: While isotropic hardening only causes minor fluctuations in the plastic strain fields, a material with high initial hardening rate and sufficient strain hardening capacity can exhibit pronounced localized deformation after ECAP. The corresponding finite element simulation results show a regular pattern of shear and matrix bands. This result is confirmed experimentally by ECAP-processing of AA6060 material in a severely cold worked condition, where microstructural analysis also reveals the formation of shear and matrix bands. Excellent agreement is found between the experimental and numerical results in terms of shear and matrix band width and length scale. The simulations provide additional insights regarding the evolution of the strain and stress states in shear and matrix bands.

Invasive fungal infections, notably candidemia, have been associated with COVID-19. The epidemiology of candidemia has significantly changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. We aim to identify the microbiological profile, resistance rates, and outcomes of COVID-19 associated candidemia (CAC) compared to patients with candidemia not associated with COVID-19. We retrospectively collected data on patients with candidemia admitted to the American University of Beirut Medical Center between 2004 and 2022. We compared the epidemiology of candidemia during and prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, we compared the outcomes of critically ill patients with CAC to those with candidemia without COVID-19 from March 2020 till March 2022. Among 245 candidemia episodes, 156 occurred prior to the pandemic and 89 during the pandemic. Of the latter, 39 (43.8%) were CAC, most of which (82%) were reported from intensive care units (ICU). Non-albicans Candida (NAC) spp. were predominant throughout the study period (67.7%). Candida auris infection was the most common cause of NAC spp. in CAC. C. glabrata had decreased susceptibility rates to fluconazole and caspofungin during the pandemic period (46.1% and 38.4% respectively). Mortality rate in the overall ICU population during the pandemic was 76.6%, much higher than the previously reported mortality of candidemia from previous studies at our center. There was no significant difference in 30-day mortality between CAC and non-CAC (75.0% vs 78.1%; P =0.76). Performing ophthalmic examination (P = 0.002), CVC removal during the 48 hours following the candidemia (P = 0.008) and identifying the Candida spp. (P = 0.028) were significantly associated with a lower case-fatality rate. The epidemiology of candidemia has been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic at our center. Rigorous infection control measures and proper antifungal stewardship are essential to combat highly resistant species like C. auris.

These features correspond to groupings of pairs of a values for successive same values of M around straight lines of equation mu*M = 2a and are characterized in this paper for rational values of mu.

Pure titanium is limited to be used in biomedical applications due to its lower mechanical strength compared to its alloy counterpart. To enhance its properties and improve medical implants feasibility, advancements in titanium processing technologies are necessary. One such technique is equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) for its severe plastic deformation (SPD). This study aimed to surface modify commercially pure titanium using micro arc oxidation (MAO) technology and mineral solutions containing Ca and P. The composition and shape of the changed surface were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. The weight % of Ca and P in the coating was determined using Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and the corrosion resistance was evaluated through potentiodynamic measurement. The behavior of human dental pulp cell and periodontal cell behavior was also studied through a biomedical experiment over a period of 1-, 3-, and 7-days using trypsin as the culture medium and ELISA as the observation method. This study showed that the mechanical grain refinement method and surface modification significantly improved the biomechanical properties of commercially pure (CP) Titanium. Although the results showed variations in the absorbance values of cells cultured on different surfaces, this study provides valuable insights into pulp cell behavior and advances the field of biomedical research.

The space time fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation, modified Equal Width equation and Benney-Luke Equations are solved by using simple hyperbolic tangent Ansatz method. A simple compatible wave transformation in one dimension is employed to reduce the governing equations to integer ordered ODEs. Then, the ansatz approximation is used to derive exact solutions. Some illustrative examples are presented for some particular choices of parameters and derivative orders.

A diffusion welding of coarse-grained and ultrafine-grained (UFG) specimens of titanium near-α alloy Ti-5Al-2V used in nuclear power engineering was made by Spark Plasma Sintering. The failure of the welded specimens in the conditions of hot salt corrosion and of electrochemical corrosion were shown to have preferentially intercrystalline character. In the case of presence of macrodefects, crevice corrosion of the welded joints was observed. The resistance of the alloys against the intercrystalline corrosion was found to be determined by the concentration of vanadium at the titanium grain boundaries, by the size and volume fraction of the β-phase particles and by the presence of micro- and macropores in the welded joints. The specimens of the welded joints of the UFG alloy have higher hardness, hot salt corrosion resistance and the electrochemical corrosion.

Ecological Society is based on socioeconomic systems directed to the equilibrium of inter-relationships between environment, climate, production systems, technologies and human communities to promote the overall well-being of people and the Earth planet. It has a main goal for supporting sustainable development and equitable societies and achieving optimal health outcomes recognizing the interconnection between people, technologies, animals, plants, and their shared environment for the one health. Using data of scientific publications and patents until the year 2024, this study shows new technologies that can support the energy transition with the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources in an effort to reduce CO₂ emissions for an ecological society having, whenever possible, zero-carbon economies to reduce environmental pollution and climate change and foster health and wellbeing of people. Results reveal that sustainable technologies supporting the transformation of the energy sector, economies and societies, and having a rapid growth, are blue hydrogen, floating photovoltaic systems, carbon capture and utilization, green hydrogen and liquid metal batteries. These findings can guide decisions of policymakers and stakeholders towards fruitful investments driving the transition from fossil-based to zero-carbon socioeconomic systems to have a long-run sustainable development of overall world system that has to direct towards an ecological society associated with one health.
