The COVID-19 pandemic, has underscored the critical importance of sustainability across various sectors, particularly within the global economy and corporate responses to pandemic-induced challenges. Companies worldwide have grappled with unprecedented financial and operational hardships, pushing some to the brink of closure. A crucial dimension of sustainability in this context pertains to corporate financing policies. Analyzing how the pandemic has impacted these policies reveals significant insights. Government support has been instrumental in mitigating pandemic-induced disruptions, but often proved insufficient for severely affected companies. Companies, seeking financial resilience, turned to state-guaranteed lines of credit as a lifeline. Additionally, moratoriums on existing credits provided temporary relief, but long-term consequences, particularly regarding corporate indebtedness. As companies adapted financing strategies, corporate indebtedness increased. Coupled with rising interest rates in late 2022, corporate financing costs surged, emphasizing the need for sustainable financial approaches addressing both short-term crises and long-term stability. In conclusion, corporate sustainability during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic necessitates a comprehensive approach. Governments must provide adequate support, companies should pursue sustainable financing solutions, and a careful consideration of the long-term consequences of financial policy changes is essential. Prioritizing sustainability in the corporate sector prepares businesses for future crises while safeguarding global economic stability.

Several empirical studies indicate that the lack of financing is one of the main barriers that affects the economic growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The main objective of this investigation was to determine to what extent the economic sector; enterprise size; the characteristics inherent to the enterprise; legal status; the variables linked to the performance of the enterprise; and the attributes of the owner influence the access to bank financing of SMEs in Mexico. Using a discrete response probit regression model, the impact of enterprises characteristics on the probability of obtaining a bank loan was determined. The data collected is from the Enterprise Surveys of Mexico, carried out by the World Bank. The sample of 1,480 enterprises is representative by enterprise size, by economic sector, and by region. The research has a quantitative approach with a correlational scope and a non-experimental and transectional design. One of the main results highlights that the determinants with the greatest influence on access to bank financing are: age, the small size, foreign participation, and the manufacturing sector. These results are consistent with other empirical studies, as well as with the pecking order theory and the financial life cycle theory.

Despite the success of recent efforts to increase access to improved water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) globally, approximately one-third of schools around the world still lack adequate WASH services. A lack of WASH in schools can lead to the spread of preventable disease and increase school absences, especially among women. Inadequate financing and budgeting has been named as a key barrier for integrating successful and sustainable WASH programs into school settings. For this reason, the purpose of this review is to describe the current knowledge around the costs of WASH components as well as financing models that could be applied to WASH in schools. Results show a lack of information around WASH costing, particularly around software elements as well as there is a lack of data overall for WASH in school settings as compared to community WASH. This review also identifies several key considerations when designing WASH budgets or selecting financing mechanisms. Findings may be used to advise future WASH in school programs.

The challenge of accessing finance by entrepreneurs from traditional financial sources is pervasive. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated the problem of limited access to finance from banks. Against this backdrop, the objective of the study was to determine the factors driving crowdfunding success during the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa. The ordinary least squares (OLS) and probit regression models were estimated to analyse 216 crowdfunding projects in Africa. The results of the study documented that targeted amount (TA), and COVID-19 pandemic were negative and significant drivers of crowdfunding success. Furthermore, comments (CMM) and duration (DRN) were negative and significantly affected crowdfunding success. Conversely, images (IM), videos (VD), backers (BCK), and updates (UPD) were positive and significantly affected crowdfunding success. The study contributes to the body knowledge by investigating the drivers of crowdfunding success during the COVID-19 pandemic period which hitherto had not been researched on extenisvely.

Based on the data of A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen of China from 2011 to 2018 and the digital inclusive finance index of Peking University (2011-2018), this paper empirically tests the impact of digital finance development on corporate social responsibility in various provinces of China and its impact mechanism. The results show that: (1) the development of digital finance helps to promote the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility; (2) the influence mechanism of the development of digital finance to promote the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility lies in that it reduces the cost of debt financing and leads to the improvement of corporate social responsibility.(3) Further research shows that the positive relationship between digital finance and corporate social responsibility is more significant in private enterprises. At the same time, the impact is more significant in areas with poor market environment. The above research shows that the development of digital finance has a significant positive effect, which will improve the level of corporate social responsibility.

Using the data of China's A-share non-financial listed enterprises from 2015 to 2022 as a sample, this study empirically tests the impact of ESG rating disagreement on corporate debt financing cost. The results show that ESG rating disagreement significantly increases the debt financing costs of enterprises, and this result still holds after a series of robustness tests such as replacing the dependent and independent variables and PSM approach. Meanwhile, the heterogeneity analysis reveals that non-state-owned enterprises and enterprises in non-heavily polluting industries are more sensitive to ESG ratings disagreement. In addition, mechanism analysis shows that corporate financing constraints mediate the relationship between ESG rating disagreements and debt financing costs. The findings of this study provide important evidence for understanding the impact of ESG rating disagreement on the costs of debt financing, enrich the meaning of ESG rating disagreement, and reveal the significance of unifying ESG rating standards.

Background/Objectives: The introduction of robotic surgery has revolutionized surgical procedures bringing significant improvements in procedures such as radical prostatectomy. In Poland, robotic technology was first used in public healthcare in 2010 for colorectal surgery in Wrocław. Public funding for robotic urologic surgery began in 2022. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of integrating a stable source of funding on the development and utilization of robotic surgery. Methods: Using data from the National Health Fund, a retrospective analysis of these procedures was conducted, focusing on radical prostatectomies from the beginning of the funding period to November 2023. Results: The study showed that in the first year of public funding (2022), 2,149 radical prostatectomies were performed using robotic systems, and this number almost doubled to 4,331 by October 2023. Patients aged 60 years and older accounted for more than 80% of those undergoing robotic surgery. The rise in the popularity of robotic surgery is attributed to its advantages, including high precision, reduced invasiveness in the surgical field, minimized bleeding and pain, and reduced postoperative wound size. The use of robotic surgery also brings environmental benefits. Conclusions: The growing number of robot-assisted surgeries in Poland reflects the increasing role of robotics in medicine. These advances meet the growing demand for healthcare services and demonstrate the precision and effectiveness of robotic technology, potentially improving healthcare access and outcomes. Further implementation and refinement of robotic solutions are necessary to meet the changing needs of medical specialties.

This study aims to identify the COVID-19 impact on the green banking activities including green financing of banks and non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs) during the pandemic. Besides, this study also reveals the in-house environmental management of banks and NBFIs during the COVID-19 outbreak. To analyze the impact of the pandemic on green banking activities, secondary data were obtained from the quarterly and annual reports of Bangladesh Bank (BB) on green banking activities, annual reports and websites of the sample banks and NBFIs in Bangladesh for the period 2020–2019. The study utilized descriptive statistics, relative percentage changes, and varying tables and graphs to analyze the obtained secondary data. Consequently, the empirical findings revealed that, compared to the pre-pandemic period, banks’ total green financing rose by 7.26% during the pandemic, while total green financing of NBFIs plummeted by 18.53% during the same period. In addition, the category-wise results indicate that green financing of the private commercial banks (PCBs) decreased by 11% during the COVID-19 pandemic, contrasting the 56.54% increase witnessed by the state-owned commercial banks (SOCBs) during the same period. Interestingly, our findings showed that green financing of foreign-owned commercial banks (FCBs) during the pandemic increased by 78.69% in 2020 compared to 2019. During the same period, BB refinancing scheme for green products/initiatives of banks and NBFIs grew by 76.97%. The results further showed that the PCBs and FCBs’ in-house environmental management expanded during the outbreak except for the number of solar-powered ATM booths, which dropped by 68.25% for PCBs and 9.09% for FCBs. On the other hand, SOCBs’ in-house environmental management grew during the pandemic. Furthermore, the results indicate that the Bangladeshi banks’ automation towards green banking were satisfactory during the pandemic. Therefore, major policy implications for the green economic recovery of the government, BB, and mangers of the banks and financial institutions in emerging economies like Bangladesh were discussed.

The paper is to examine the influence of business innovation, business expansion, product and service development, working capital, machinery and equipment on financing choices in the western part of Nigeria. To determine the effect on financing choices, a logistic regression analysis was used. The results in an impressive manner indicate that entrepreneur, essentially with working capital (WC), machinery and equipment (ME) requirement and business innovation (BI) used internal funding sources while business expansion (BE) and product and service development (PS) lean toward external funding sources and the more established and larger firm utilizes debt financing. The approach and the experiential findings offer an unprecedented degree of investigation from an academic point of view through the previous study on Nigeria entrepreneur. Similarly, the experimental results will strengthen the entrepreneur's knowledge, awareness and perception. Through the capabilities of the entrepreneurs, they can prepare and adapt in accordance with the business condition they conduct business and to help them in their choice procedure regarding the capital structure of their organization in the midst of an interval when the fuss of entrepreneur funding is gradually elicited in the Nigerian climate.

In response to the escalating climate-related catastrophes of recent decades and their significant impacts on global transportation systems, this study explores the concept of resilience bonds as a novel financial tool for enhancing supply chain sustainability. The research applies a case study from China to demonstrate the application of resilience bonds in funding infrastructure projects that aim to enhance the sustainability and resilience of supply chain networks. The study examines the market mechanisms and valuation models of resilience bonds, assessing their potential to mitigate risks associated with transportation failures and to reduce economic losses from unexpected disruptions. By applying empirical data, the research quantitatively evaluates the impact of resilience bonds on the sustainability and reliability of transportation systems. The findings show that resilience bonds can significantly contribute as a sustainable solution to enhance supply chain resilience and sustainability, offering insightful alternatives for financing resilient infrastructure projects. This study not only supports policymakers, investors, and business leaders in understanding innovative funding mechanisms but also makes a significant contribution to resilience financing for sustainable transportation within supply chains, especially in the context of global disruptions.

Having effective and efficient financing is one of the most important steps in accelerating the development of public infrastructure, including toll roads. This study aims to identify Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for the implementation of toll infrastructure financing in Indonesia. Thirty-three CSFs have been identified from literature review. A Delphi survey involving a panel of experts working in the infrastructure industry was conducted. Based on the survey, it is known that internal rate of return, affordability, investment decision, commercial banks, financing costs, interest rate risk, control of cash flow, contract scope, and principles of risk transfer are important factors for the implementation of toll infrastructure financing in Indonesia. This study fills research gaps by developing a CSF model for successful toll road infrastructure financing in Indonesian PPPs, considering private perspectives and aiming to provide insights for investors and enhance understanding of country profiles in developing countries. The focus on toll road implementation in Indonesia contributes to a comprehensive understanding of CSFs for PPPs in the country.

This study examines whether and how carbon trading policy impacts the financialization of non-financial firms, using China emission trading scheme as a natural experiment. We show that the carbon trading policy has effectively long-term inhibitory effect on corporate financialization. Our findings are robust to possible result bias and more precise control group. In addition, we explore potential channels through which carbon trading policy can affect financialization, and find that it contributes to curb financialization by reducing financing constraints. Finally, we show that the relationship between carbon trading policy and financialization of non-financial companies is moderated by company’s ownership, region and industry competition.

For several years, commercial banks in Poland have been reporting activities related to the impact on the environment, society, and corporate governance (ESG). However, only new guidelines, mandatory for many entities, including banks, will allow for comparing these reports, which will be of great importance mainly for investors. The forms of these reports were and still are different, difficult to compare in individual years, and difficult to compare between banks. The article aims to present the banks' preparation for the new reporting rules based on the latest ESG reports. The research was conducted in 4 groups of commercial banks operating in Poland, which are the largest companies listed in the WIG Banks sub-index of the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Gaps in the preparation of these banks for non-financial reporting were identified. The non-financial reports of the banks studied have significant information potential that can be used by various stakeholder groups, including investors, customers, employees, regulators, and local communities. However, the comparability of ESG reports is one of the key challenges faced by both reporting banks and users of these reports. The research results can be used both in scientific works and by bank representatives to improve non-financial reports.

Developing countries, including Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), are exceptionally vulnerable to climate change due to their distinct geographical and environmental characteristics. The impacts of climate change extend across their ecosystems, water resources, and vital economic sectors, such as food systems, health, education, and energy. Escalating sea levels and heightened salinity levels imperil freshwater reserves, while warmer ocean temperatures and acidification disrupt water demand, tourism, health services, and fisheries. Furthermore, developing countries bear the brunt of water shortages, flooding, and deteriorating water quality. Alarmingly, nearly two-thirds of the global population experience severe water scarcity for at least one month annually, with the majority residing in developing countries. By 2025, half of the world's population could inhabit areas grappling with water scarcity, predominantly concentrated in developing nations. In this context, innovative adaptation strategies, notably transformative wastewater projects, are imperative for fostering sustainability and resilience in these regions. However, significant barriers impede progress, creating a stark disparity between current financing capabilities and the imperative to fund water security initiatives. Compounding these challenges, developing countries find themselves ensnared in a burgeoning debt crisis, marked by escalating interest rates and inflation, which threatens to impede developmental progress and curtail investments in adaptation and mitigation endeavors. Consequently, there arises a critical necessity to harness innovative financial mechanisms to transform these debts into assets that facilitate climate action. This paper meticulously explores the potential of debt-for-climate swaps as a catalyst for advancing transformative wastewater projects, with a focused lens on their strategic deployment to underpin critical initiatives. Through rigorous examination of case studies and empirical evidence, the paper elucidates how debt-for-climate swaps can effectively bolster sustainable wastewater management systems in developing countries. Furthermore, it delineates best practices for leveraging these mechanisms to fortify environmental sustainability and resilience. Additionally, the paper delineates the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders, including governments, policymakers, the private sector, communities, and climate financial institutions. By amalgamating theoretical insights with tangible examples, this paper furnishes a comprehensive framework for harnessing debt-for-climate swaps to enhance water security and resilience in developing countries. It endeavors to furnish actionable strategies for policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders to navigate the complex terrain of climate change and engender sustainable development.

At the beginning of 2020, with the onset of the pandemic, the traditional learning environment for learners drastically changed globally. Since then, most students/teachers have started and practiced distance and virtual learning/teaching. Thus, a technological breakthrough in virtual learning has followed. In connection with this, many countries worldwide have commenced allocating additional financing and funds for educational institutions' technological improvement and development. The long-term stay in distance learning has revealed and highlighted new problems students face: their knowledge level has decreased, they lack socialization skills, and they face psychological and physical health problems. Due to this negative impact on students, a need to research and evaluate how much the EU countries allocated to solve the distance learning-caused problems and what programs or models they prepared has emerged and encouraged further studies. The research has found that many countries increased their allocations very minimally, e.g., 0.0.1%, but some increased their available budgets to 32%. Notably, most countries did not separate distance learning exit funding from distance learning preparation funding. Based on the problems the countries saw, only a few states identified withdrawal from distance learning as a problem. Considering this, we set ourselves the goal to evaluate exit models from distance learning and allocated funding amounts. The following objectives were planned to achieve the goal: · to evaluate the global practice of exit from distance learning; · to determine the scope of funding for pandemic management; · to evaluate the amounts of funding allocated to manage pandemic-caused consequences and the GDP ratio. Research methods: mathematical-statistical analysis, empirical analysis, and analysis of scientific literature.

This study presents a comprehensive examination of the transformative potential of Islamic finance in advancing sustainable development goals (SDGs). It underscores the unique position of Islamic finance, with its ethical and moral foundations, to contribute significantly to environmental sustainability, social equity, and economic development. The paper highlights innovative financial instruments like Zakat, Waqf, and green Sukuk, which not only align with but also actively promote SDGs. Through a multidisciplinary approach, it advocates for a paradigm shift towards integrating sustainability into the core of financial systems. The analysis includes challenges in harmonizing Human Development Indexes (HDIs) with Ecological Footprints (EFs), proposing strategies for sustainable development, ecological conservation, and educational reforms. This study is pivotal for policymakers, financial institutions, and educators, providing a roadmap for leveraging Islamic finance towards achieving a balanced, sustainable, and inclusive global economy.

This study investigates the complex role of financial risks in the context of public–private partnerships (PPPs) in India and their relationship to the amount and extent of investments made by private partners (s). We hypothesize that subsidies, bid criteria, and risk have a positive relationship with investments made by private partners. A project’s leverage moderates these relationships. Regression was used to analyze the hypotheses using SPSS 24 and PROCESS Macro. Data from the World Bank were collected from 2009 to 2019 for the study variables. Interestingly, our research finds support for these relationships that may seem contrary to some commonly-held notions of risk relationships, such as – the government using ‘viability gap’ funding to attract private investment and ‘leverage’ does not moderate the relationship between risk assumed and private investment. This study is among the first to recognize and elaborate on financial risk relationships, specifically in the context of Indian PPPs. These findings are significant for both private and public participants in terms of financial considerations in PPP projects, especially in emerging markets.

Quality evidence-based decisions and strategies are critical and valuable tools in strengthening health systems policies, strategic priorities action plans and comprehensive care delivery management. Our finding showed that there is scarcity of local/national and internal effective evidence-based and management strategies for informed decision making based on the disease or health epidemics nature, extend, ecological and geo-location of pandemics and epidemics crises burden and impacts. Evidence-based programs or projects are crucial in evolving pandemics and/or (Ebola, meningitis, Cholera and influenza) epidemics persistent morbidity and mortality/ case fatality reduction or prevention; as well as on poverty and inequity alleviation within the vulnerable population and citizenry over time. This paper assesses implications of evidence-based on health systems surveillance and monitoring systems, preparedness and emergency response gaps and needs in improving care delivery uptake and usefulness, coverage and effectiveness in Africa. Furthermore, the article advocates for quality, access to and uptake of knowledge-based policy-decision making and practice improvements in building efficient and standardized surveillance, preparedness and response approaches. Also, in enriching data sharing and inclusiveness through understanding the links between poverty, poor health and inequited related emerging infectious diseases epidemics in Africa. Leveraging on cumulative lessons learnt experiences and innovations in integrating participatory knowledge-based policies and approaches is paramount in fostering vulnerable population awareness and engagement, skills empowerment collaborative productivity and sustainable healthy solutions and measures. Strengthening new partnerships, alliances, and networks requires collaborative and quality evidence policy decisions, appropriate and reliable monitoring and evaluation systems approaches and strategies in improving local preparedness and emergency response capabilities against future emerging infectious diseases epidemics and fast-tracking poverty alleviation knowledge-based livelihoods and health solutions for impact. Furthermore, integrated, participative partnerships and collaborative responsibilities, cost effective and reliable evidence health financing and budget allocation, and targeted capacity development aiming at reducing and averting the burden of poverty related emerging threats and epidemics preparedness and response programs in African countries.

Sub-national governments (SNGs) in developing countries have increasingly explored green municipal bonds as a financing tool, driven by promises of lower borrowing costs, enhanced reputation, and support for sustainable economic development. This study aims to critically examine these claims by analysing the actual costs and complexities associated with green municipal bonds (GMBs). The research involves a comparative analysis of traditional municipal bonds and GMBs, focusing on the financial and operational challenges faced by SNGs. Detailed case studies from Mexico City and Cape Town are used to illustrate the practical implications of issuing GMBs. The findings reveal that, despite similar or slightly lower interest rates, GMBs often entail higher issuance costs due to the need for certification, monitoring, and reporting of green projects. These additional costs, coupled with the necessity of hiring external consultants, make GMBs more expensive and difficult to replicate after initial transactions. Furthermore, the study highlights that the demand from investors has not met initial expectations. While green-aligned investors show a higher appetite for GMBs, they constitute only a small portion of the finance market. Traditional investors, primarily focused on financial returns, are less inclined to invest in GMBs solely based on their green label. Consequently, many SNGs have reverted to issuing traditional “vanilla” municipal bonds while still using the proceeds to fund green initiatives. This shift underscores the need for a realistic assessment of GMBs’ viability in developing countries and calls for a re-evaluation of strategies for promoting sustainable economic development through green finance.

Green credit policy as an important tool to guide China's sustainable economic development, how to effectively play the function of capital deployment and improve the efficiency of industrial green innovation is an important issue facing the construction of ecological civilization. This paper uses China's Green Credit Guideline introduced in 2012 as a quasi-natural experiment , based on relevant panel data of industries from 2007 to 2018, uses the Super-SBM model including non-expected output to measure the green innovation efficiency of 35 industries in China, and constructs the PSM-DID model to explore how green credit policy impact on the green innovation efficiency of heavily polluted industries, the results show that : green credit policy significantly contributes to green innovation efficiency of heavily polluted industries with a lag. Further study finds that green credit policy pushes heavily polluted industries to improve green innovation efficiency by increasing financing cost and R&D investment; meanwhile, the heterogeneity test shows that the higher the state-owned share of industry, the greater the promoted effect of green credit policy on green innovation efficiency of heavily polluted industries. Finally, in order to accelerate the implementation of green credit policy and promote the green innovation efficiency of heavily polluted industries, relevant countermeasures are proposed from three aspects: banks, enterprises and government.

A virtual digital bank (VDB) will match all the posts, negotiate terms as necessary, and move the money -- everyone benefits. Distributed Digital Lending, DDL, applies to macro, long terms loans, as well as to micro. very short terms loans. DDL efficiency will ensure that all money at rest will be money in growth, and the full global lending capacity will be put to good service through the exact loans borrowers want. DDL is hinged in digital transactions which are immediate, irrevocable, and private, per regulatory allowance. The matching is optimized with AI tools. BitMint*LeVeL is the design standard coin for DDL, but other digital money options will do too.

Sustainable energy development (SED) is a crucial component of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), aiming to maintain economic and social progress while protecting the environment and mitigating climate change’s effects. SED serves as a transition paradigm for sustainable development, providing a blueprint for energy peace and prosperity for people and all uses. This article presents the history of SED and then uses a critical discourse approach to summarize existing review studies in SED. Ten interlinked themes of SED are identified, with two of them considered to be among the least studied in existing SED reviews and in the current global discussion around climate change. This study explores these two themes, which include energy financing and the need for 100% renewable energy (RE), a sub-theme of decarbonization strategy working towards the 1.5–2.0 °C scenario. The study suggests that the current G20 countries’ contributions, if maintained continuously per annum, in addition to 80% more funding from private investment compared to the amount in the 1.5 °C scenario financial requirements for clean energy, are sufficient to limit global warming. In addition to the present drive for 100% RE, the article also discusses emerging issues, such as energy storage options with an indication of hydrogen as the most promising, other energy-related development agendas, and the need for regional security stability to prevent energy wars. Selected SED decarbonization strategies are presented across the power, transport, building, and industrial sectors. The study concludes with progress and directions for future research, mainly the need for re-defining nationally determined contribution (NDC) through an emissions budgeting and centralized global or regional emissions stock-taking strategy working towards the 1.5 °C scenario.

Historical legacy of Eastern European and Balkans’ health systems was mutually interdependent and shaped by local socioeconomic circumstances. Three distinctive systems of risk sharing and health financing to develop since the late XIX century were the Bismarck, Beveridge, and Semashko systems. Modern day healthcare systems in these countries are challenged by population ageing, accelerated innovation in medical technology, growing purchasing power and rising demand for healthcare services. Supply side changes contribute to demand side efficiency bottlenecks in financing, driving the costs of the already expensive medical care up. All of the nations have a large share of citizens experiencing difficulty with affordability and access to medical care, particularly in rural and remote areas. Network of Health technology assessment agencies have mushroomed over the past three decades. Principles of health economics theory and cost-effective resource allocation are slowly gaining ground in governing authorities’ mindset and decision-making process. For many years to come, pharmaceuticals and medical services will remain dependent on out-of-pocket spending. Currently accelerating and spreading 4.0 Industrial Revolution, together with the Belt and Road Initiative, are likely to substantially impact the further economic development of this vast region. This study employs a bibliometric analysis of the emerging trends in the area of Money Laundering for Ter-rorism Financing to provide direction for future research in the area. The authors used VOSviewer and an-alysed 2577 published documents generated from the SCOPUS search using the PRISMA methodology. The findings reveal a growing research interest in this area, with a focus on understanding the complex inter-play between money laundering and terrorism financing. Emerging trends such as the use of cryptocurren-cies, trade-based money laundering, and the role of non-profit organizations in facilitating these activities are highlighted. The research contributes to the broader understanding of money laundering for terrorist financing by providing insights into the evolving research landscape and identifying areas for future re-search.
