The cubic B2 to monoclinic B19’ martensitic transformation in NiTi shape memory alloys proceeds by the nucleation and propagation of habit plane interfaces that remain undistorted and unrotated by the transformation. Due to incompatibility of austenite and martensite lattices in NiTi, the interfaces form between austenite and twinned martensite as described by Phenomenological Theory of Martensite Crystallography (PTMC). This have been assumed also for stress-induced martensitic transformation where, however, interfaces with single martensite variant have been frequently reported. On this account, we propose a different solution of strain compatibile habit planes by considering the effect of elastic deformation of both lattices due to external stress. Using modified PTMC theory, we evaluate the magnitudes and orientations of the critical uniaxial stress in tension and compression for which strain compatible habit plane interfaces with a single variant of martensite can form. The calculated stress is too high, but considering the pre-transformation softening of the C’ elastic constant for the {110}A⟨110⟩A austenite shear mode, the critical stress decreases down to 500 MPa. For such situation, we analyse orientation dependence and tension-compression asymmetry of required C’ softening, and the orientations of strain compatible habit planes that are compared with available experimental results. The role of coalesced bainite in hydrogen embrittlement of tempered martensitic steels was investigated. Results showed that the coalesced bainite significantly enhanced the hydrogen embrittlement resistance by restricting hydrogen accumulation at the prior austenite grain boundaries, thus shifting the hydrogen-assisted failure mode from intergranular to transgranular fracture.

This paper mainly used database technology, machine learning, thermodynamic calculation, experimental verification, etc., on integrated computational materials engineering. The interaction between different alloying elements and the strengthening effect of precipitated phases are investigated mainly for martensitic ageing steels. Modelling and parameter optimization were performed by machine learning, and the highest prediction accuracy was 98.58%. Investigated the influence of composition fluctuation on performance and correlation tests to analyze the influence of elements from multiple perspectives. Furthermore, screen out the three-component composition process parameters with composition and performance with high contrast. Thermodynamic calculations studied the effect of alloying element content on the nano-precipitation phase, Laves phase, and austenite in the material. The heat treatment process parameters of the new steel grade were also developed based on the phase diagram. A new type of martensitic ageing steel was prepared by selected vacuum arc melting. The sample with the highest overall mechanical properties had a yield strength of 1887 MPa, a tensile strength of 1907 MPa, and a hardness of 58 HRC. The sample with the highest plasticity had an elongation of 7.8%. The machine learning process for the accelerated design of new ultra-high tensile steels was found to be generalizable and reliable.

Alloys based on TiNi are widely used in various fields of technology and medicine. In the present work, we report on preparation of TiNi-alloy based wire with the shape memory effect, which was used for compression clips for surgery. Composition and structure of the wire, and its martensitic and physical-chemical properties were studied using SEM, TEM, optic microscopy, profilometry, mechanical tests, etc. The TiNi alloy was found to consist of B2 and B19' and secondary-phase particles of Ti2Ni, TiNi3 and Ti3Ni4. Its matrix was slightly enriched in Ni (50.3 at. % of Ni). Homogeneous grain structure was revealed (an average grain size of 19±0.3 μm) with equal quantities of grain boundaries of special and general types. Surface oxide layer provide improved biocompatibility and promote adhesion of protein molecules. Overall, the obtained TiNi wire was concluded to exhibit martensitic, physical and mechanical properties suitable for its use as an implant material. The wire was then used for manufacturing compression clips with the shape memory effect and applied in surgery. The medical experiment that involved 46 children demonstrated that the use of such clips in children with double-barreled enterostomies permitted to improve the results of surgical treatment.

The effects of partial replacement of Si by Al on the microstructure, tensile properties, and Charpy impact toughness were investigated using 0.2%C-Si/Al-Mn-Cr-B TRIP-aided martensitic steels. The impact toughness was related to the microstructural and mechanical properties. The partial re-placement decreased the volume fraction of retained austenite and increased the mechanical stabil-ity, accompanied by softening and an increase in the volume fraction of the primary martensite. Resultantly, the partial replacement decreased strength and ductility. The impact absorbed energy (value) at 25 C was slightly increased by the partial replacement. The increased impact absorbed energy was mainly caused by high crack/void propagation energy due to the softened primary martensite and a small contribution of the stabilized retained austenite. The 50% shear fracture ductile-to-brittle transition temperature was marginally raised by the partial replacement. The raised transition temperature was mainly associated with an increase in a unit crack path of qua-si-cleavage/cleavage fracture.

In this paper, a new method by combining cold drawing and martensitic transformation was proposed to produce ultrahigh-strength steel wire, and the effect of austenitizing heating rate on microstructure and mechanical properties was studied. Compared with Muffle furnace heating, salt bath heating has a much higher austenitizing heating rate, which is beneficial to obtain ultrafine-grained martensite for steel wire with a larger section. By salt bath hardening and low-temperature tempering, an ultrahigh strong (strength of 2.48 GPa) and tough (elongation of 6.0%) steel wire was produced. Moreover, to explore whether is it possible to replace long-time low-temperature tempering with short-time tempering at elevated temperatures to improve the tempering efficiency, the effect of tempering time on the evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties of the steel wires tempered at 350 °C was systematically studied. The results demonstrate that tempering at 350 °C for 30 s can endow the steel wire with comparable mechanical properties to that of the one tempered at 250 °C for 2 h. With tempering time prolonging, the strength decreases gradually with the precipitated phase transition from χ-Fe5C2 carbide into θ-Fe3C carbide and coarsening, which plays a major role in the strength decrease.

In this study, we demonstrate how the incorporation of appropriate feature engineering together with the selection of a Machine Learning (ML) algorithm that best suits the available dataset, leads to the development of a predictive model for transformation temperatures that can be applied to a wide range of shape memory alloys. We develop a gradient boosting ML surrogate model capable of predicting Martensite Start, Martensite Finish, Austenite Start, and Austenite Finish transformation temperatures with an average accuracy of more than 95% by explicitly taking care of potential distribution changes when modeling different alloy systems. We included heat treatment, rolling, extrusion processing parameters, and alloy system categorical features in the model input features to achieve more accurate and realistic results. In addition, using Shapley values, which are calculated based on the average marginal contribution of features to all possible coalitions, this study was able to gain insights into the governing features and their effect on predicted transformation temperatures, providing a unique opportunity to examine the critical parameters and features in martensite transformation temperatures.

The aim of this work is to study the phase transformations, microstructures and mechanical properties of the martensitic stainless steel (MSS) 410 deposits produced by laser powder-directed energy deposition (LP-DED) additive manufacturing. The LP-DED MSS 410 deposits underwent the post heat treatment in austenitizing at 980℃ for 3hrs and followed by different tempering treatment at the temperatures of 250, 600, and 750℃ for 5hrs, respectively. The analyses of phase transformations and microstructural evolutions of LP-DED MSS 410 were carried out using X-ray diffraction, SEM-EDS, and EBSD. Vickers hardness and tensile strength properties were also measured to analyze the effects of the different tempering heat treatments. It reveals that as-built MSS 410 has very fine lath martensite and high hardness of about 480HV1.0 and tensile strength of about 1280 MPa, but elongation was very lower than the post heat treated ones. Precipitations of chromium carbide (Cr23C6) were most commonly observed at the grain boundaries and the entire matrix at the tempering temperatures of 600℃ and 750℃. In general, the tensile strengths de-creased from 1381MPa to 688MPa as tempering temperatures increased up to 750℃ from 250℃. Additionally, as the tempering temperature increased, the chromium carbide and tempered mar-tensite structures became coarser.

The effect of the melt cooling rate on the atomic ordering of austenite and, as a consequence, on the martensitic transformation of a nonstoichiometric alloy of the Ni-Mn-In system has been studied. In-situ TEM observations revealed differences in the mechanism of phase transformations of the alloy subjected to different cooling conditions. It is shown that during quenching a high density of antiphase boundaries (APB) is formed and the alloy is in the austenite-martensitic (10M and 14M) state up to a temperature of 120K. In a slowly cooled alloy, a lower APB density is observed, and a two-stage transformation L21/B2 → 10M → 14M occurs in the range of 150–120 K.

Equiatomic CuZr alloy undergoes a martensitic transformation from the B2 parent phase to martensitic phases (P21/m and Cm) below 150 °C. We clarified the effect of the thermal cycling on the morphology and crystallography of martensite in equiatomic CuZr alloy using a transmission electron microscopy. The 10th cycled specimens consisted of different multiple structures at the maximum temperature of DSC measurement: 400 °C and 500°C, respectively. At the maximum temperature 400 °C of DSC measurement, it is composed of the fine plate-like variants, and a lamellar eutectoid structure consisting of Cu10Zr7 and CuZr2 phases on the martensitic variant. Concerning the maximum temperature 500 °C of DSC measurement, it is observed the martensitic structure and the lamellar structure in which the martensitic phase was completely eutectoid transformed. The formation of this lamellar eutectoid structure due to thermal cycling leads to the shift of forward and reverse transformation peaks to low and high temperature side. In addition, new forward and reverse transformation peaks indicating a new transformation appeared by thermal cycling, and the peaks remained around -20 °C. This new martensitic transformation behavior is also discussed.

General derivation of the well-known Ren-Otsuka relation, 1/α (dTo)/dx=-α/β (where To, x, α and β(>0) are the transformation temperature, the composition, as well as the composition and temperature coefficient of the critical shear constant, c’, respectively) for shape memory alloys, SMAs, is provided based on the similarity of interatomic potentials in the framework of dimensional analysis. A new dimensionless variable, to(x)=(To (x))/(Tm (x) ), describing the phonon softening (where Tm is the melting point) is introduced. The dimensionless values of the heat of transformation, H, and entropy, S as well as the elastic constants c’, c44, A=c44/c' are universal functions of to(x) and have the same constant values at to(0) within sub-classes of host SMAs having the same type of crystal symmetry change during martensitic transformation. The ratio of (dto)/dx and α has the same constant value for all members of a given sub-class and relative increase of c’ with increasing composition should be compensated by the same decrease of to. In the generalized Ren-Otsuka relation the anisotropy factor, A appears instead of c’ and α as well as β are the differences of the corresponding coefficients for the c44 and c’ elastic constants. The obtained linear relation between h and to rationalizes the observed empirical linear relations between the heat of transformation measured by DSC (QAM) and the martensite start temperature, Ms.

When developing bone implants Young's modulus is one of the primary characteristics of the material that should be considered. The study focuses on the possibility of regulating the modulus of the alloy Ti-50.8 at % Ni by varying its initial structure as well as aging-induced microstructure in a wide range. Microstructure observations were performed using TEM and SEM observations. The calorimetric studies of martensitic transformations were carried out using "Mettler Toledo 822e". Tensile tests were performed in a test temperature range of ‒196≤T≤+100°C using an «IN-STRON 5966». The grain/subgrain size of B2-austenite strongly affects the modulus magnitude. This effect is ambiguous for a material with a grain size of 0.13–3 µm and depends on the test temperature. The effectiveness of aging on the modulus reduction depends on the initial structure: it is most pronounced in an alloy with a relatively coarse grain size of 9 µm and brings a decrease by 3.8 times at a temperature of 37°C. Bone-like elastic modulus (10–30 GPa) at a human body temperature of 37°C is realized in an aged fine-grained NiTi alloy. An ultrafine-grained sub-structure exhibits he same values of Young's modulus in the temperature range from -100°С to 25°С.

Low alloyed martensitic resistant steels could become a solution for material saving and components lightweighting in the industrial activity due to the combination of high strength and good weldability and toughness characteristics. However, it is known that martensitic resistant steels are susceptible to temper embrittlement (TE), which can cause undesirable brittle fracture during service of components. In this investigation the influence of the cooling rate after a high temperature tempering (650 ºC) on TE of a low alloyed martensitic Mn-Cr-Ni steel was studied. Charpy impact tests and metallurgical analysis using emission Scanning Electron and Transmission Electron Microscopy were carried out on specimens cooled in different cooling media after the tempering to stablish a relation between the microstructures and the TE. Obtained results shown a considerable influence of the tempering-carbides location at grain boundaries at low post-tempering cooling rates on the TE of the selected steel.

Elastic properties of materials and their changes with temperature are important for their applications in engineering. A study on the influence of phase composition of AISI 4130 alloy on Young's modulus (Ed), shear modulus (Gd), and damping (Q-1) was carried out by Impulse Excitation Technique (IET). The material characterization was carried out using confocal microscopy, XRD, MET, HV, and dilatometry. A stable structure, composed of ferrite (BCC) and pearlite (α-Fe+Fe3C), was obtained by annealing. Metastable structure of martensite (BCT) was obtained by quenching. The Ed, Gd, and Q-1 were measured, varying the temperature from RT to 900 °C. The values of Ed and Gd, at RT, were determined as 201.5 and 79.2 GPa (annealed), and 190.13 and 76.5 GPa (quenched), respectively. In the annealed steel, the values Ed and Gd decrease linearly on heating up to 650 °C, with the thermal expansion. In the quenched steel, weak changes in the dilatometric curve, Ed, Gd, and Q-1, in the range of 350-450 °C, indicated decompositions of the martensitic phase. Sharp decrease in the moduli and high peak of Q-1, was observed for both samples around 650-900 °C, revealing low lattice elastic stability of the phases during transformations α(BCC)+Fe3C↔γ(FCC).
