The differential distribution, size, and quality of urban green spaces (UGS) among localities generate a differential distribution of benefits provided to users. We analyzed the spatial distribution of five size categories of UGS among 15 municipalities of Mexico City, compared their total surface per capita and associated them with the social marginality index. We found 1,353 UGSs accessible for public use with a total area of 2,643 ha. Seventy-four percent of them had <1 ha of surface area, and 51% were located in only three municipalities that were mostly middle- and high-income. These municipalities concentrated a higher area of green spaces per capita. We found a negative correlation between the marginality index and the area of UGS per municipality; the lower the marginality index, the higher the area of green spaces. We consider this a situation of environmental injustice since urban environmental services are distributed unequally with respect to marginalized populations.

The use of botanical extracts of the plant Jatropha curcas (Euphorbiaceae) represents a valuable alternative to control insect pests and avoid the detrimental effects on the environment and health that arise due to synthetic chemical insecticides. Thus, we conducted a systematic review to summarize the published evidence on the bioactivity of J. curcas against insect pests. Electronic databases were searched to identify studies that assessed J. curcas extracts against insect pests in various types of crops. We included 39 articles that reported the insecticidal and insectistatic activity of several botanical extracts from J. curcas against insects of eight different taxonomic orders. The evidence demonstrates that aqueous and methanolic extracts from seeds and leaves, seed oil, and petroleum ether seed extracts were effective against insect pests of stored grains, aphids of cabbage, sorghum, fruit flies, and desert locusts. The extracts caused high mortality, controlled the populations, reduced oviposition, diminished hatchability, and increased the antifeedant effect. However, the type of solvent used to obtain the botanical extract and the method of application (contact or food) are fundamental to increase its bioactivity. Therefore, botanical extracts from seeds and leaves of J. curcas should be considered as an alternative against insect pests and may be incorporated into integrative and sustainable management for insect control.

Asthma is the most prevalent cause of chronic respiratory diseases. Herein, we evaluate asthma burden in Mexico based on results from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD 2019) study 2019. Using data from the GBD 2019, we estimated asthma prevalence, incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted lived years (DALYs) counts and crude and age-standardized rates per 100,000 people with a 95% uncertainty interval (UI) by sex and age at the national and subnational levels in Mexico from 1990 to 2019. At the national level, asthma affected 3.35 million (95% UI, 2.59-4.37) people, with 606.0 thousand (433.0-811.1) new incident cases and 1,655 (3-1,931) deaths during 2019. Asthma caused a slightly higher burden in females and affected mainly age groups between 1 and 14 years of age. The burden of asthma gradually decreased from 1990 to 2010. However, during the last decade (2010-2019), prevalence increased by 8.2%, as did incidence by 11.3%, whereas mortality and DALYs decreased by 23.3 and 1.6%, respectively. Finally, the burden of asthma displayed a heterogeneous pattern of disease at the subnational level. In conclusion, asthma causes a significant health loss in Mexico that differentially affects the population distributed among the states of the country, thus causing health disparities that should be addressed to provide sustainable asthma diagnosis and control to reduce its burden, especially at early stages of life.

In 2019, the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) estimated that prostate cancer (PC) was the 16th cause of death globally in males. In Mexico, PC epidemiology has been reported for a selected number of metrics and years, although without including the most up-to-date estimates. Herein, we describe and compare the burden and trends of PC in Mexico and its 32 states from 2000 to 2019. For this, we extracted online available data from the GBD 2019 to estimate the crude and age-standardized rate (ASR per 100,000 people) of incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). In Mexico, PC caused 27.1 thousand (95% uncertainty intervals, 20.6-36.0 thousand) incident cases, 9.2 thousand (7.7-12.7 thousand) deaths, and 161.5 thousand (122.7-219.5 thousand) DALYs in males of all ages in 2019. Among states, Sinaloa had the greatest ASR of incidence and Guerrero the highest values of deaths and DALYs. The burden of PC showed an increasing trend, although the magnitude of change differed between metrics and locations. We found both an increasing national trend and subnational variation in the burden of PC. Our results confirm the need for updated and timely estimates to design effective diagnostic and treatment campaigns in locations where the burden of PC is the highest.

The cancer burden is increasing worldwide with contrasting national patterns. Therefore, providing national estimations is necessary to understand and control this health issue. Herein, we comparatively describe incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted lived years (DALYs) due to 29 groups of cancer in Mexico from 1990 to 2019 by sex and age. Using public data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, we assessed the national burden of cancer using counts and crude and age-standardized rates per 100,000 people with 95% uncertainty intervals for 2019 and their trends using the annual percentage of change from 1990 to 2019. In 2019, cancer caused 222,060 incident cases, 105,591 deaths, and 2,86,054 DALYs in the general population. Nonmelanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer had the highest incidence, and six groups of cancer (lung, colorectal, stomach, prostate, breast, and pancreatic) caused 53% of the deaths in 2019. From 1990 to 2019, incidence and mortality showed an increasing trend that varied between 10% and 436% among the groups of cancer, whereas the crude and age-standardized rates showed cancer-specific sex disparities. Our results demonstrate a substantial growth of the national burden of cancer with sex-specific patterns of change. These results may guide national efforts toward reducing health loss due to cancer.

We evaluated the individual and combined insecticidal and insectistatic activities of the acetonic extract of Jatropha curcas seeds (JcAE) and the enzymatic extract of Serratia marcescens (SmEE) against the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda. An ingestion bioassay was performed using 0 ppm, JcAE (100, 250, 1000, and 2500 ppm), SmEE (40, 80, 150, and 300 ppm), or JcAE+SmEE (1000+150, 1000+300, 2500+150, and 2500+300 ppm). We determined the weight, development, and mortality of S. frugiperda larvae and pupae, identified the major components of JcAE, and evaluated the chitinolytic activity of SmEE. Mortality was compared via Fisher’s exact test, whereas continuous variables were compared via the Kruskal‒Wallis test followed by Dunn’s test. The percentage difference was also evaluated using 0 ppm as a baseline. The two highest concentrations of JcAE (1000 and 2500 ppm) and SmEE (150 and 300 ppm) resulted in significant insecticidal and insectistactic activity because they increased the cumulative larval and pupal mortality between 77.33% and 86.67%, decreased the weights of the larvae (range, -63.02% to -80.23%) and pupae (range, -8.45% to -22.72%), and retarded their development for up to 10 and 4 days, respectively. Additionally, 1000+300 and 2500+300 ppm JcAE+SmEE increased the cumulative mortality by 93.33% and 90.0%, reduced larval and pupal weights, and prolonged larval development. Seven major fatty acids were identified as the main components of JcAE, and SmEE showed exo- and endochitinase activity. JcAE and SmEE, either individually or in combination, are alternatives for sustainable biological control of S. frugiperda.

A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to estimate the prevalence of chlamydiosis in small ruminants. The study included 133 publications that reported the presence of Chlamydia abortus in 109 and 74 studies in sheep and goats from 45 countries. The prevalence of chlamydiosis was estimated at global, regional, and national levels using meta-analyses of proportions. Meta-regression and cumulative meta-analyses were also performed. Globally, the prevalence of chlamydiosis in sheep and goats was estimated at 20.1% (95% CI: 17.8-22.4) and 14.4% (11.6-17.4), respectively. For sheep, chlamydiosis prevalence was heterogeneous at regional and national levels. South Asia had the highest prevalence (30.6%) and East Asia and Pacific the lowest (14.0%). Nationally, chlamydiosis was more prevalent in Romania, Hungary, and Germany (range 53.3-87.0%) compared to Costa Rica, Australia, and Zimbabwe (4.7-5.2%). Among goats, chlamydiosis prevalence was similar across regions (10.4-19.7%), but varied significantly among countries, 0.0% in Romania and Australia and 91.7% in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In both species, sample size, number of diagnostic techniques, and latitude were significant covariates. Prevalence varied widely in the first decades of publications before stabilizing. Our study found a high prevalence of chlamydiosis in small ruminants, with the pathogen being distributed globally but heterogeneously across countries.
