Teeth segmentation plays a pivotal role in dental diagnosis, treatment, planning, and the development of computer-aided dental systems. It enables precise identification and analysis of dental structures, aiding in detecting dental abnormalities, measuring tooth dimensions, and assessing oral health conditions. Accurate teeth segmentation also facilitates the automation of dental workflows, leading to improved efficiency and reduced human error. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has witnessed rapid advancements, with various approaches developed or enhanced. While Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been widely used in medical image segmentation, the U-Net architecture has emerged as a standout performer due to its exceptional segmentation capabilities. This paper presents a proof of concept for the Attention U-Net architecture, as previously used in [1], applied to teeth segmentation. The study demonstrates the superior performance of this network in accurately segmenting teeth using a newly available benchmark dataset called Tufts Dental X-Ray Dataset. When trained and tested on 10-fold cross-validation, the model achieved an average dice coefficient of 95.01%, intersection over union of 90.6%, and pixel accuracy of 98.82%. These scores surpass those of all other networks implemented on the same dataset. By leveraging the Attention U-Net architecture, our research showcases the potential of advanced AI techniques in dental radiography. The findings contribute to the ongoing efforts to develop automated systems to assist dental professionals in their clinical practice.

Autonomous Driving (AD) has become a prominent research area in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in recent years. This opens the door wider for self-driving cars to surpass conventional vehicles in the current market share. Despite its apparent simplicity, AD is composed of complex and heterogeneous systems, which are in need of a high level of coordination and alignment to ensure both full automation and safety. Therefore, numerous research studies have been conducted over the last few years to facilitate such coordination and accelerate the capacity of these types of vehicles to be self-managed in complex situations. The paper summarises these approaches that led to building what is known nowadays as the autonomous driving pipeline. Moreover, although skepticism exists regarding the practicality of AD as a viable alternative to traditional vehicles, extensive research suggests the multiple benefits of relying on them for mobility. While challenges remain in implementing AD in the real world, including regulation and technical issues, substantial progress in recent years indicates a growing acceptance of AD in the near future. This paper further explores the advantages and opportunities of the conducted such systems in facilitating the practicality of Autonomous Driving.

Superficial mycoses, encompassing a range of fungal infections affecting the outer layers of the skin, hair, and nails, have become increasingly prevalent in recent years. While these infections are generally non-life-threatening, the emergence of antifungal resistance poses a growing threat to effective treatment strategies. In this article we explore the escalating specter of antifungal resistance in superficial mycoses, focusing on the underlying mechanisms driving resistance, the clinical implications, and potential avenues for mitigation. The rise of antifungal resistance in superficial mycoses is multifactorial. Consequently, the efficacy of conventional treatments is diminishing, leading to persistent or recurrent infections. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying antifungal resistance is crucial for developing targeted therapeutic approaches. Research efforts aimed at unraveling these mechanisms are essential for identifying new drug targets and designing innovative treatment strategies to combat resistant strains. In response to the escalating threat of antifungal resistance, a multifaceted approach is required. This includes enhanced surveillance of antifungal susceptibility patterns, the development of novel antifungal agents, and the implementation of stringent guidelines for antifungal use. Additionally, educational initiatives targeting healthcare professionals and the public are essential to promote responsible antifungal use, reduce the risk of resistance emergence, and improve treatment outcomes.

Studies on the possible association between bacteria and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remain inconclusive, largely due to methodological variations/limitations. The objective of this study was to characterize the species composition as well as functional attributes of the bacteriome associated with OSCC. DNA obtained from 20 fresh OSCC biopsies (cases) and 20 deep-epithelium swabs (matched control subjects) were sequenced for the V1-V3 region using Illumina’s 2x300 bp chemistry. High quality, non-chimeric merged reads were classified to species level using a prioritized BLASTN-algorithm. Downstream analyses were performed using QIIME, PICRUSt, and LEfSe. Fusobacterium nucleatum subsp. polymorphum was the most significantly overrepresented species in the tumors followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Campylobacter sp. Oral taxon 44, while Streptococcus mitis, Rothia mucilaginosa and Haemophilus parainfluenzae were the most significantly abundant in the controls. Functionally, genes involved in bacterial mobility, flagellar assembly, bacterial chemotaxis and LPS synthesis were enriched in the tumors while those responsible for DNA repair and combination, purine metabolism, phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis, ribosome biogenesis and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis were significantly associated with the controls. This is the first epidemiological evidence for association of F. nucleatum and P. aeruginosa with OSCC. Functionally, an “inflammatory bacteriome” is enriched in OSSC.
