The development of novel porous composite materials for organic dye degradation and removal has received increasing attention due to water contamination problem. In this paper, hydrothermal synthesized nano zeolite A have been encapsulated with porous periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) through a simple modified StÖber method an organosilane-directed growth-induced etching strategy, the obtained yolk-shell structured sample was further functionalized by the impregnation of copper, realizing the composite material with hierarchical porous and catalytic properties. The morphology, porosity and metal content of the zeolite Cu/A and Cu/A@Et-PMO were fully characterized. As compared to the parent material, the composite Cu/A@Et-PMO have an efficient adsorption and catalytic degradation performance on methylene blue (MB), the removal efficiency reached as high as 95% of 60 mg/L MB with 10min. These novel structured porous composites may have great potential for adsorption and degradation application including waste effluents.

As one of toxic Volatile Organic Pollutant (TVOCs), formaldehyde has a toxic effect on microorganisms, and then inhibits the biochemical process of formaldehyde wastewater treatment. Therefore, the selective degradation of formaldehyde is of great significance to achieve formaldehyde wastewater high-efficiency and low-cost treatment. This study constructed a heterogeneous Fe-ZSM-5/H2O2 Fenton system for selective degradation to target compounds. By bonding Fe3+ onto the surface of ZSM-5 molecular sieve, Fe-ZSM-5 was prepared successfully. XRD, BET and FT-IR spectral studies shown the prepared Fe-ZSM-5 was mainly composed of micropores. The influences of different variables on formaldehyde selective heterogeneous Fenton degradation performance were studied. The 93.72% formaldehyde degradation and the 98.15% selectivity of formaldehyde compared with glucose had demonstrated in the optimized Fenton system after 360 min. Notably, the resultant selective Fenton oxidation system had a wide range of pH suitability from 3.0 to 10.0. Also, the Fe-ZSM-5 was used in 5 consecutive cycles, while the degradation efficiency of formaldehyde did not drop dramatically. Using reactive oxygen species scavengers, hydroxyl radical was the main active substance to degrade formaldehyde. Furthermore, the great degradation performance of this system to high concentration of formaldehyde was acquired, and the degrading efficiency was more than 95%.

In pursuit of overcoming Fenton’s oxidation limitations in wastewater treatment, an introduction of heterogeneous photocatalyst is developed. In this regard, the current work is introducing ZnO nanocrystals that were successfully prepared by thermal decomposition technique and then capped with oleic acid (OA). The synthesized ZnO-OA and the pristine ZnO were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Then, the study introduces the application of such materials in advanced oxidation processes, i.e. Fenton's reaction to treat dye-containing wastewater. Synthetic wastewater that prepared using Reactive Blue 4 (RB4) is used as a simulated textile wastewater effluent. Fenton’s oxidation is applied, and the system parameters were assessed using the modified Fenton’s system. The synthesized samples of ZnO are characterized by a recognized wurtzite hexagonal structure. Modifying the surface of ZnO with oleic acid (OA) led to an increase in crystallite size, lattice parameters, and cell volume. These modifications are linked to the efficient capping of ZnO nanoparticles by OA, which further improved the dispersion of the nanoparticles, as demonstrated by SEM imaging. The optimum conditions of ZnO and ZnO-OA synthesized modified Fenton composites showed 400, 40 mg/L for H2O2 and catalyst respectively, at pH 3.0 within 90 min under UV irradiation for maximal dye oxidation reached 93%. The catalytic performance at its optimal circumstances was in accordance with a pseudo-second-order kinetics model for both ZnO-OA and the pristine ZnO based Fenton’s systems. Also, the thermodynamic parameters were also checked and the values settled that both Fenton systems are spontaneous in nature, proceeds at a low energy barrier condition (10.38 and 31.38 kJ/mol for ZnO-OA and the pristine ZnO based Fenton reaction, respectively).

A magnetite (CDC@Fe3O4) heterogeneous photocatalyst was synthesized via treated and modified cotton in two steps. The designed nanocomposites were characterized by FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, and VSM analyses. The Fenton-photocatalytic decomposition efficiency of the synthesized magnetic catalyst was evaluated under visible sunlight using Methyl Orange (MO) as a model organic pollutant. The impacts of several degradation parameters, including the light source, catalyst load, irradiation temperature, oxidant dose, and pH of the dye aqueous solution and its corresponding concentration on the Fenton photodegradation performance, were methodically investigated. (CDC@Fe3O4) heterogeneous catalyst showed a remarkable MO removal rate of 97.9% at 10 min under visible-light irradiation. (CDC@Fe3O4) nanomaterials were also used in a heterogeneous catalytic optimized protocol for a multicomponent reaction procedure to obtain nine tetra-substituted imidazole derivatives. The green protocol afforded imidazole derivatives in 30 min with good yields (91-97%) at room temperature and under ultrasound irradiation. Generally, a synthesized recyclable heterogeneous nano-catalyst is a good example and is suitable for wastewater treatment and organic synthesis.

Information regarding physiological and molecular plant responses to the treatment with new biofertilizers is limited. In this study a fast-composting soil amendment (FCA), obtained from solid waste by means of a Fenton reaction, was tested to evaluate the effects on the growth of Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia seedlings. Growth rate, leaves and roots biomass, chlorophyll concentration and total soluble proteins of seedlings treated with the 2% FCA soil amendment showed significant increase in comparison with control seedlings. Leaf proteomic analysis revealed that the FCA soil amendment induced the up-regulation of proteins belonging to photosynthesis machinery, carbohydrate metabolism and promoted the up-regulation of the water stress response. Root proteomics indicated that FCA strongly induced the organs morphogenesis and developments; root cap development, lateral root formation, post-embryonic root morphogenesis were the main biological processes enriched by the treatment. Overall, our data suggest that addition of FCA formulation to the base soils might ameliorate plant growth by inducing carbohydrates primary metabolism and the differentiation of a robust root system.

Textile wastewater containing dyes pose significant environmental hazards. Advanced oxidative processes, especially the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process, are effective in degrading a wide range of contaminants due to high conversion rates and ease of catalyst recovery. This study evaluates the photocatalytic degradation of azo dyes Acid Red 18 (AR18), Acid Red 66 (AR66) and Orange 2 (OR2) using magnetite as a catalyst. The magnetic catalyst was synthesized via a hydrothermal process at 150°C. Experiments were conducted at room temperature, investigating the effect of catalyst dosage, pH, and initial concentrations of H2O2 and AR18 dye. Kinetic and thermodynamic studies were performed at 25, 40 and 60°C for the three azo dyes (AR18, AR66 and OR2) and the effect of the dye structures on the photocatalytic efficiency was investigated. At 25 °C for 0.33 mmol.L-1 of dyes at pH 3.0, using 1.4 g.L-1 of catalyst and 60 mg.L-1 of H2O2 under a UV radiation of 16.7 mW.cm-2 the catalyst showed a 62,3% degradation for AR18, 79.6% for AR66, and 83.8% for OR2 in 180 minutes of reaction. The oxidation of azo dyes under these conditions is spontaneous and endothermic. The pseudo-first order kinetic constants indicated a strong temperature dependence with an order of reactivity of the type: OR2 > AR66 > AR18, which is associated to the characteristics of molecular complexity (size, steric hindrance, aromatic conjugation), electrostatic repulsion and the nature of the acid-base interactions on the catalytic surface.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a multifaceted neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline and neuronal loss, representing a most challenging health issue. We present a computational analysis of transcriptomic data of AD tissues vs. healthy controls, focused on elucidation of functional roles played by long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) throughout the AD progression. We first assembled our own lncRNA transcripts from the raw RNA-Seq data generated from 527 samples of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, resulting in the identification of 31,574 novel lncRNA genes. Based on co-expression analyses between mRNAs and lncRNAs, a co-expression network is constructed. Maximal subnetworks with dense connections are identified as functional clusters. Pathway enrichment analyses are conducted over mRNAs and lncRNAs in each cluster, which serve as the basis for the inference of functional roles played by lncRNAs involved in each of the key steps in an AD development model that we have previously build based on transcriptomic data of protein-encoding genes. Detailed information is presented about the functional roles by lncRNAs in activities related to stress response, reprogrammed metabolism, cell-polarity, and development. Our analyses have also revealed that lncRNAs have discerning power in distinguishing between AD samples of each stage and healthy controls. This study represents the first of its kind.

This study investigated the efficacy of advanced oxidation process (AOP) for the reduction of pollution loads in mixed agro-food industrial wastewaters (dairy and slaughterhouse) in Nablus city, Palestine. Bench-scale Jar tests using an advanced oxidation process (AOP) were performed as a pretreatment stage. Initial results on direct applications of Fenton’s process on mixed agro-food wastewater (COD: 15400-18200 mg/l) were unsatisfactory. Hence, the performance of the Fenton process was applied on three mixed wastewater samples with different pre-treatment trials: (A) coagulant (FeCl3.6H2O) addition, (B) settling (2h), and use of flocculent (lime Ca(OH)2) in sample (C). Preceded with lime, Fenton`s process (Sample C) was most effective in the removal of organic carbon and nitrogen (89% COD; 80% TKN). The removal efficiency in inorganic loads (91% TSS; 62% TS) were achieved under H2O2/COD (w/w ratio 2:1), H2O2/Fe+2 (w/w ratio 10:1) and acidic conditions (pH = 3). The adoption of AOP technology by agro-food industries could ensure compliance with municipal by-laws and acquire connection permits to sewerage networks.

The aim of this study is to examine an efficient and environmental friendly process for hydrolyzing starch, an industrial-derived by-product of the potato processing industry, and to use the produced hydrolysates as substrates for methane production. A full factorial experiment was designed and the optimal concentrations of FeSO4·7H2O, H2O2 and temperature were determined obtaining a yield of 99.5%, with a total carbohydrates content equal to 28.65 g, when the input parameters were at their high level: FeSO4·7H2O 1.00g/L, H2O2 0.51 g/L and temperature 70.0oC. The hydrolysis kinetics were also examined revealing that temperature was the most important factor among the three optimization parameters. Furthermore, biodegradability tests were carried out to measure the methane production potential from the produced hydrolysates. The specific methanogenic activity was reached 0.669 g CODCH4/gVSS-day proving the effectiveness of the hydrolysis process and highlighting the potential of this food manufacturing by-product for bioenergy production. A preliminary cost analysis showed that a small investment for utilizing the starch in an existing wastewater treatment facility of a potato processing industry becomes profitable before the end of the 3rd year obtaining a NPV 37.5% higher than the NPV of the current utilization scenario.

Direct applications of classical Fenton’s process on mixed raw agro-food wastewater samples (COD: 15400-18200 mg/l) revealed unsatisfactory results. The performance of the Fenton process was evaluated using three mixed samples with different pre-treatment trials: (A) coagulant (FeCl3.6H2O) addition, (B) settling (2h) allowed, and use of flocculent (lime Ca(OH)2) in sample (C). Compared with other partial treatments, sample (C), Fenton`s process lime preceded, was the most effective in the removal of organic (89% COD; 80% TKN) and inorganic loads (91% TSS; 62% TS) under H2O2/COD (w/w ratio 2:1), H2O2/Fe+2 (w/w ratio 10:1) and acidic conditions (pH =3). Obtained results comply with Nablus municipal by-law (COD below 2000 mg/l), which help decision-makers within the agro-food industries install pollution reduction systems. Investment in the Fenton-based peroxidation process, allow agro-food industries to obtain connection permits to sewage networks.

Iron-based materials are widely applied in Fenton chemistry and they have promising prospects in the processing of wastewater. The composition complexity and rich chemistry of iron and/or oxides, however, hamper the precise understanding on the active sites and the working mechanism which still remain highly controversial. Herein, iron oxides of four different model systems are designed through a conventional precipitation method plus H2 reduction treatment. These systems feature Fe@Fe3O4 with abundant oxygen vacancy, Fe0 and Fe3O4 particles with interface structures, and Fe3O4-dominated nanoparticles of different sizes. These materials are applied in the decomposition of methyl orange as a model reaction to assess the Fenton chemistry. The Fe@Fe3O4 with core-shell structures exhibited significantly higher decomposition activity than the other Fe3O4-rich nanoparticles. A thin Fe3O4 layer formed by auto-oxidation of iron particles when exposing to air can boost the activity as compared with the Fe0 and Fe3O4 particles with interface structures but poor oxygen vacancy. The unique hetero-structure with the co-existence of both metallic iron and oxygen vacancy displayed excellent redox propensity which might account for the superior Fenton activity. This finding provides a new perspective to understand and design highly efficient iron-based Fenton catalysts.

The aggregate aftermath of persistent inflammation in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) places them at increased risk for the advancement to colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CACRC). CACRC is preceded by IBD, the highly heterogenous, pharmacologically incurable, pertinacious, reverting/worsening, and immune-mediated inflammatory pathologies of the colon and rectum. The molecular and immunological basis of CACRC is highly correlated with the length/duration and stringency/severity of colon inflammation predisposed by the exogenous/free hemoglobin alpha chain (HbαC) the byproduct of infiltrating immune cells, extravasated erythrocytes, and macrophage erythrophagocytosis. The exogenous free HbαC prompts oxygen-free radical-arbitrated DNA damage (DNAD) through increased cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) exacerbated by decreased tissue antioxidant defenses. Mitigation of Fenton reaction via pharmaceutical therapy would attenuate the ROS, promote apoptosis, DNAD repair, and subsequent prevent the incidence of CACRC. Three pharmaceutical options that attenuate hemoglobin toxicity include haptoglobin, deferoxamine, and flavonoids (vitamins C/E). Haptoglobin’s clearance rare from plasma is inversely correlated with its size; the smaller the size, the faster the clearance. Thus, the administration of Hp1-1 may prove to be beneficial. Furthermore, deferoxamine’s hydrophilic structure limits its ability to cross cell membranes. Thus, it may be beneficial if administered intracellularly to avoid the higher plasma concentrations and longer incubation periods associated with extracellular administration. Finally, the effectiveness of flavonoids and natural herb antioxidants is associated with high reactivity of hydroxyl substituents. Multiple analyses are currently underway to assess the clinical context of CACRC and outline the molecular basis of HbαC-induced ROS pathogenesis by exposing colonocytes and/or colonoids to HbαC. These cells are then treated with haptoglobin, deferoxamine (DFO), and flavonoids in order to separate free HbαC and measure their impact on hydroxyl radical formation therapies. The molecular pathogenesis of sporadic colorectal cancer (SCRC) i.e., “inflammation-dysplasia-carcinoma” progression sequence is well described, but the immunopathogenesis of CACRC herein reviewed is broadly still in prodromal stage/phase to be validated and understood. Therefore this timely review outlines the molecular and immunological basis of disease pathogenesis and the pharmaceutical intervention as a protective measure for CACRC.
