Among young children, parents are a main factor of children's preferences for food served as they are responsible for purchasing and providing Functional Foods (FFs) and they are role models for them. This revies study conducted according PRISMA guidelines and aimed to review the recent data about the consumption of FC into families as part of a balanced diet. The literature search was conducted via online academic search engines PubMed, ResearchGate and Google Scholar. The search process was restricted to research papers published in English in reviewed journals from 2012 to 2023. Thirty six articles were ultimately included in the present review. The results showed that there is a correlation between several socio-demographic and a higher probability of buying FFs for children. There is a positive effect on purchasing frequencies of gender (female), higher household annual income and education level, together with higher levels of nutritional knowledge and trust in positive scientific evidence regarding FFs. Also, parents’ socio-demographic factors affect the children’s F/V consumption. The summary of evidence concludes on the point that parents are the role models about their children’s eating behavior and eating habits.

Mindful Eating (ME) is an increasingly popular dietary practice that may mediate the sympto-matology of Eating Disorders (EDs). Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is a recently proposed eating dis-order characterized by excessive concern for healthy eating and calorie control. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between ME and Psychological Distress (PD) with EDs and ON. In a cross-sectional study involving 407 adults, this research explored the interplay between ME, PD, and EDs, notably ON. Utilizing validated scales for ME (MES-16), EDs (EDE-QS), ON (ORTO-R), and PD, subcategorized in depression, anxiety, and stress (DASS-21), alongside inquiries into Instagram usage, significant correlations emerged. ME demonstrated a robust negative asso-ciation with both EDE-QS (r=-0.501, p<0.001) and ORTO-R (r=-0.519, p<0.001), while EDE-Q and ORTO-R showed significant correlations with depression, anxiety, and stress (p<0.001). Variations in ORTO-R mean scores were notably distinct across different ME categories (p<0.001), emphasizing the relationship between ME and ON. Additionally, participants with extensive daily Instagram use displayed significantly higher ON scores compared to minimal users (p<0.05). These findings sug-gest a negative link between ME with EDs and ON, highlighting ME's potential role in reducing ON tendencies. Furthermore, Instagram use seems associated with PD and elevated ON levels.

(1) Background : Low dietary intake of calcium, vitamin D, vitamin C and magnesium has been associated with increased risk of osteoposrosis. The purpose was to evaluate changes in biomarkers of bone metabolism, and cardiometabolic health in postmenopausal women, with high risk of osteoporosis, followed by a nutritional intervention program. (2) Method: It was a prospective randomized controlled trial. A sample of 115 apparently healthy postmenopausal women(45 -75 years of age) randomized into four groups: (I) nutritional intervention group(n=40) received daily 1000mg vitamin C, 500mg vitamin D3, 500mg calcium(Ca) and 300mg magnesium (Mg); (II) control group(n=42) received daily 500mg vitamin D3, 500mg Ca and 300mg Mg; (III) nutritional intervention group (n=18) received daily 150mg bisphosphonates, 500mg vitamin D3, 500mg Ca and 300mg Mg; and (IV) nutritional intervention group (n=15) received daily about 364 mg polyphenols via an innovative functional food (50g olive paste enriched with mountain tea extract) along with 500mg vitamin D3, 500mg Ca and 300mg Mg. Groups I -III received supplementation for a year whereas group IV for 5 months. Changes in calciregulatory hormone parathormone (PTH) were evaluated at the beginning of the study as well as at 5 and 12 months intervals. Blood levels of vitamin D, vitamin C, Ca, Mg and the lipid profile were assessed at the beginning and at the end of the study. Anthropometric indices (weight, body fat(Kg), Body Mass Index(BMI) and bone mineral density(BMD) were evaluated at the beginning and at the end of the study. Statistical analysis was performed with IBM-SPSS Statistics-21. The level of statistical significance was set at p<0.05. (3) Results: 25(OH)D3 levels were improved, in groups II, III and IV (+3,71% and +1.45% and +5.62% respectively). PTH levels were increased at the end of the intervention period, for groups I and IV. Significant positive changes recorded, in total BMD, in all four study groups. Significant beneficial changes for total cholesterol was observed in group IV (-2.07%, P<0.05) and positive changes in group I for HDL biomarker (+61.62%, P<0.05) (4) Conclusions:. Additional larger-scale clinical trials and intervention studies are considered essential, in order to fully investigate and elucidate associations between dietary components and biochemical indices of bone metabolism.

In the last two decades, plant taxonomy has bloomed, following the development of a novel technique, namely DNA Barcoding. DNA barcodes are standardized sequences, ideally unique, coding or non-coding, either from the genome of the organism or from its organelles, that are used to identify/classify an organismal group; in short the method includes amplification of the DNA barcode, sequencing and comparison with a reference database containing the relevant sequences from different species. In plants, the use a universal DNA barcode, such as COI which is used in animals, has not been achieved so far. Several DNA barcodes from single loci as well as combinations of barcodes have been successfully used in various settings; additionally, as next generation sequencing becomes affordable, very long sequences- super barcodes, such as the chloroplast genome are being used successfully especially to distinguish between close species. In this review we summarize the work done on DNA barcoding in plants and discuss different approaches used so far.

In the contemporary accelerated pace of life, emphasizing the importance of sleep quality is essential for enhancing overall well-being and health. This study investigates the link between poor sleep quality and key factors affecting wellness, such as mental health and eating disorders. Through a cross-sectional analysis involving 407 participants, utilizing established measures including the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire Short (EDE-QS), and the single-item Sleep Quality Scale (SQS), data was collected and analyzed using SPSS v28 and R-Statistics. The findings reveal a significant correlation (p&lt;0.05) between DASS-21, EDE-QS, and SQS, indicating that individuals experiencing poor sleep quality exhibit higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. Furthermore, multinomial logistic regression analysis highlights low sleep quality as a risk factor for both mental health (OR: 1.071, 95% CI: 1.042, 1.102, p&lt;0.05, low vs. high sleep quality), and eating disorders (OR: 1.047, 95% CI: 1.004, 1.092, p&lt;0.05, low vs. high sleep quality). Overall, these results underscore the critical role of sleep quality in mental health and suggest insomnia as a predictive factor for both poor mental well-being and disordered eating habits. Further research through randomized controlled trials is warranted to validate the findings of this cross-sectional study.

Nowadays, the high demand for healthy foods and sustainable products, has led the food industry to explore innovative food technologies, such as fortification with bioactive compounds like antioxidants and polyphenols, that may be sourced from herbs or by-products. The aim of the present study was to explore the enrichment of refined olive oils with natural bioactive compounds such as the herbs rosemary (salvia rosmarinus), basil (ocimum basil), sage (salvia officinalis), lemon balm (melissa oficinallis), st. john’s wort (hypericum perforatum), pink savory (Thymbra satureja), dittany (origanum dictamnus), and by-products such as pomace from olives, olive leaves (olea europaea tree), orange peel (citrus sinensis), lemon peel (citrus limon), pomegranate peel (punica granatum) and mandarin peel (citrus reticulate). The fortification of the refined olive oils was performed with the use of different methodologies such as Conventional maceration (CM), Incubation shaking maceration (ISM), and Ultrasound assisted maceration (UAM). Their phenolic content and antioxidant capacity were measured with Folin–Ciocalteu assay and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay respectively. All methods demonstrated that different parameters such as time of maceration, temperature and sample concentration, play an important role in the fortification process of the refined olive oils. The predicyed bioavailability of the antioxidant and phenolic compounds in the fortified oils was determined with in vitro digestion and ranged from 4.84% to 53.11%. Furthermore, the refined olive oils fortified with pomace, basil, st. john's wort, and pomegranate peel presented the highest antioxidant and phenolic predicted bioavailability indices during the in vitro process compared to the control refined olive oil. Finally, fortification with natural herbs or by-products can be considered an innovative method for the improvement of the nutritional value of refined olive oils.

Olive oil, as the main source of polyphenols in the Mediterranean diet pattern, is mentioned to show remarkable postprandial bioactivity, contributing to the reduction of cardiometabolic risk factors. In recent years, the consumption of refined olive oil, instead of other olive oil classes, led to a reduced intake of polyphenols from the usual diet. This controlled, human nutritional intervention inves-tigated whether the enhancement of refined olive oil with orange peel extract may modulate postprandial lipemia, glycemia and oxidative stress, in individuals at cardiometabolic risk. In a cross-over framework, 21 participants aged 30-65 years, who met the eligibility criteria, received a fat and carbohydrated meal of mashed potatoes, homogenized with refined olive oil (50 mL) or the functional olive oil, enhanced with 10% orange peel extract, intervening a washout week. Blood draws were performed in fasting, 30min, 1.5h and 3h after the meal intake. Plasma lipids, glucose, uric acid and total plasma antioxidant capacity according to FRAP method, were measured at each timepoint. A significant reduction of LDL-cholesterol was observed, 1.5 h and 3 h after the func-tional meal intake, compared to non-significant changes after the control meal (p <0.05). No other statistically significant interactions were detected to the remaining biomarkers (p> 0.05). Further investigation is needed for safer conclusions about the postprandial modulation of cardiometabolic risk factors, by the functional olive oil, enhanced with orange peel extract.

The human gastrointestinal gut contains about 100 trillion of microorganisms including up to 5000 different types of bacteria called the "gut microbiome". Alterations in the composition of gut microorganisms (dysbiosis) can cause threatening for life diseases. This present seeks to evaluate if finally diet and more specifically functional foods affect the intestinal microbiome, and if obesity and the metabolic syndrome (Mets) are associated with the intestinal microbiome. This systematic review was accomplished according to PRISMA guidelines mostly using the key words functional foods, microbiome, obesity, Mets, Mediterranean diet. The search was carried out of recent scien-tific articles from the databases Pubmed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The most studies discussed in this review showed a potential therapeutic effect of the Mediterranean diet rich in beneficial nutrients, on body weight, fat deposition, in correlation with modulation of the synthesis of gut microbiome. This literature review demonstrates a possible relationship between the metabolites of the microflora, the endotoxemia, obesity and Mets. The role of probiotics, prebiotics, and polyphe-nols in the prevention of obesity and Mets is of high importance in promoting healthy aging. The future challenge is to understand how different dietary patterns can regulate the composition of the gut microflora and whether these changes could be long-term.

Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) encompasses the comprehensive evaluation of an indi-vidual's health and well-being across multiple dimensions. Mindfulness, recognized as a scientifi-cally supported strategy for anxiety management, plays a role in enhancing both physical and mental health. The Gut-Brain Axis (GBA) serves as the bidirectional communication link between the gastrointestinal system and the central nervous system. This study aims to explore the associa-tion between Mindfulness and factors influencing the GBA in both healthy individuals and those with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). A cross-sectional investigation involved 338 adults, in-cluding 50 IBD patients, utilizing validated Greek scales for Mindfulness (MAAS-15), Mediterra-nean Diet (14-MEDAS), and HRQoL (EQ-5D-5L). The questionnaire gathered demographic, an-thropometric, and lifestyle data. Among healthy participants, EQ-5D-5L showed a moderate cor-relation with the MAAS-15 scale (r=0.389, p
