The Pros and Cons of ChatGPT: Incorporating AI Literacy into the Curriculum

Abstract
In the present world, ChatGPT has become a game-changing technology that gives students a creative approach to gaining knowledge, increasing their learning, and raising their academic standing. This narrative literature study aimed to discuss ChatGPT's advantages and disadvantages. Notwithstanding its many benefits, ChatGPT has drawbacks, including the possibility of academic dishonesty, false information, and excessive dependence on content produced by artificial intelligence. It can give precise and well-organized answers but lacks human intuition and critical thinking, which are necessary for more in-depth learning. Students should utilize it properly instead of completely replacing conventional teaching techniques and see it as an additional tool. Teachers should help pupils distinguish between trustworthy and untrustworthy material by integrating AI literacy into the curriculum. In order to control the use of AI in education, policymakers should also create moral standards and regulations. ChatGPT can remain a potent ally in contemporary education by encouraging ethical AI use and giving students the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world.

Introduction:

In today’s digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in education, revolutionizing how students access knowledge and develop essential skills. One such AI tool, ChatGPT, has gained significant attention for its ability to assist students in various academic tasks, ranging from research and writing to problem-solving and language learning. As technology continues to evolve, integrating AI-driven tools like ChatGPT into education has the potential to bridge learning gaps, enhance student engagement, and provide personalized support. This paper explores the role of ChatGPT in modern education as a new helping hand for students, highlighting its benefits, limitations, and implications for academic growth.
ChatGPT is an effective learning assistant by providing instant access to vast information, enabling students to find answers to complex queries efficiently. According to Luckin et al. (2021), AI-powered tutoring systems have been shown to enhance students' learning experiences by offering real-time explanations and guidance. Unlike traditional learning methods, which may require students to wait for instructor feedback, ChatGPT facilitates immediate interaction, making it a valuable tool for self-paced and independent learning. Additionally, AI-based platforms can support students with diverse learning styles by adapting responses to individual needs. Fostering innovation in education requires collaborative efforts among policymakers, educators, and stakeholders to address structural limitations and drive sustainable progress (Genelza, 2022).
Furthermore, ChatGPT has proven useful in improving students’ writing skills. Research by Zhang and Dafoe (2022) suggests that AI-driven language models can help students refine their essays by providing grammar suggestions, enhancing coherence, and offering content development ideas. Many students struggle with structuring their thoughts coherently in academic writing, and ChatGPT can act as a writing assistant by generating outlines, paraphrasing content, and even summarizing complex readings. This level of assistance fosters critical thinking and encourages students to improve their writing proficiency.
Another notable advantage of ChatGPT in education is its role in promoting digital literacy. As society increasingly relies on technology, students must develop the skills to navigate AI-driven environments. According to Selwyn (2023), exposure to AI tools like ChatGPT helps students develop computational thinking and ethical awareness regarding the use of digital resources. However, while ChatGPT offers numerous advantages, students need to use it responsibly and critically evaluate the information it provides to ensure academic integrity and accuracy. It also enhances accessibility, engagement, and learning outcomes but presents challenges such as technological barriers and varying levels of student digital literacy (Genelza, 2023).
Despite its benefits, concerns regarding overreliance on ChatGPT and academic dishonesty must be addressed. Studies by McNamara et al. (2023) indicate that some students may misuse AI tools to generate entire assignments without engaging in meaningful learning. Educators must emphasize using ChatGPT as a supplementary tool rather than replacing critical thinking and original research. Implementing ethical guidelines and AI literacy programs in educational institutions can help students develop responsible AI usage habits.
The integration of ChatGPT in education also raises questions about the role of educators. While AI can assist in answering student queries, it cannot replace the human elements of teaching, such as mentorship, emotional intelligence, and personalized feedback. Research by Aoun (2018) emphasizes that the future of education should focus on complementing AI capabilities with human-centered learning approaches. Educators can create more dynamic and effective learning environments by leveraging AI as a support system rather than a substitute for traditional teaching methods.
ChatGPT represents a significant advancement in modern education, offering students a valuable resource for academic growth and digital literacy. Its ability to provide instant feedback, improve writing skills, and enhance independent learning makes it an essential tool for today’s learners. However, ethical use and overreliance must be carefully managed through proper guidelines and educator support. As AI continues to shape the educational landscape, integrating ChatGPT responsibly will enable students to harness its full potential while maintaining academic integrity and critical thinking skills.

ChatGPT: Knowing Its Pecs and Power

Integrating ChatGPT, a sophisticated language model developed by OpenAI, into educational settings has sparked considerable interest regarding its potential as a supportive tool for students. This review examines the current literature on ChatGPT's role in modern education, focusing on its applications, benefits, challenges, and ethical considerations.
ChatGPT has been utilized across various educational domains to enhance student learning experiences. Higher STEM education offers improved opportunities for students to engage with AI technology, facilitating personalized learning and immediate feedback (Ray, 2023). Additionally, ChatGPT aids in brainstorming, summarization, and research assistance, simplifying complex information and supporting students in their academic endeavors (Lo & Hew, 2023). Its ability to generate human-like responses makes it a versatile tool for enhancing students' digital literacy and writing skills (Mahapatra, 2024).
Despite its advantages, ChatGPT presents challenges that educators and students must navigate. Concerns about academic misconduct have arisen, as ChatGPT's ease of generating assignments may tempt some students to misuse the technology (Marche, 2022). Moreover, ChatGPT's occasional inaccuracies, particularly in technical subjects like mathematics, necessitate a critical evaluation of its responses by users (Mollick, 2023). The potential for over-reliance on ChatGPT could impede the development of critical thinking and creativity among students (Johnson, 2020). There is a need for legal and ethical frameworks to regulate technology and ensure its responsible use while preventing misuse in deepfake-based deception and cybersecurity threats (Genelza, 2024).
The ethical implications of ChatGPT's integration into education are significant. Data privacy, potential biases in AI-generated content, and clear guidelines on acceptable use are paramount (Loos et al., 2023). Educators are urged to establish policies that promote ethical AI usage, ensuring that students understand the boundaries of AI assistance in academic work (Ravšelj et al., 2025).
The widespread use of ChatGPT has prompted educational institutions to reassess traditional assessment methods. With the increasing ability of AI to generate human-like text, educators are exploring alternative evaluation strategies that emphasize critical thinking and problem-solving skills over rote memorization (Alimardani, 2024). This shift aims to maintain academic integrity while leveraging AI's benefits to enhance learning outcomes.
As ChatGPT continues to evolve, its role in education is expected to expand. Ongoing research is essential to understand its long-term impact on student learning and achievement fully. Developing comprehensive guidelines for integrating ChatGPT into curricula will help educators harness its potential while mitigating risks. Emphasizing AI literacy among students and educators alike will be crucial in adapting to this technological advancement in the educational landscape. ChatGPT enables creative innovations in entertainment and AI-driven content generation; the study raises concerns about their role in spreading misinformation, identity fraud, and political manipulation (Genelza, 2024).

Method

A literature review is a structured, organized, and transparent process for identifying, selecting, and critically appraising relevant research studies to answer a specific research question. It aims to provide an unbiased and reliable assessment of current knowledge on a particular topic. A systematic review is a scholarly synthesis of the evidence on a clearly presented topic using critical methods to identify, define, and assess research (Bowman, 2016).

Findings and Discussions

Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into education has led to transformative learning experiences. ChatGPT, an advanced AI language model developed by OpenAI, has emerged as a powerful tool for students, aiding them in academic writing, research, and comprehension. This section presents the findings on the impact of ChatGPT in education and discusses its advantages and limitations.
Findings suggest that students who utilize ChatGPT experience improvements in academic performance. According to Johnson and Kumar (2023), AI-assisted learning helps students grasp complex concepts more effectively by providing instant explanations and contextual examples. This fosters independent learning, allowing students to study at their own pace.
A study by Smith et al. (2023) highlights that ChatGPT aids students in structuring research papers, generating citations, and summarizing academic articles. It reduces the time required for literature reviews, thereby increasing productivity. However, students are advised to verify AI-generated information to maintain academic integrity. The platform’s effectiveness in simplifying complex concepts, encouraging creative expression, and promoting peer learning must also be considered (Genelza, 2024).
ChatGPT enables personalized learning by adapting to students’ queries and providing tailored responses. While it presents numerous advantages, ethical concerns, and accuracy issues must be carefully managed. As students increasingly rely on AI-powered tools, ChatGPT plays a crucial role in bridging gaps in understanding and making education more accessible.
Despite its many advantages, ChatGPT presents challenges, such as the risk of academic dishonesty, misinformation, and over-reliance on AI-generated content. While it can provide accurate and well-structured responses, it lacks critical thinking and human intuition, essential for deeper learning. Students must use it responsibly and view it as a supplementary tool rather than a complete replacement for traditional learning methods. While ChatGPT offers significant benefits, its responsible integration into education requires well-defined policies, faculty training, and digital literacy programs to maximize its effectiveness while mitigating risks (Genelza, 2024).
Furthermore, educators and institutions must recognize the impact of AI in education and find ways to integrate it effectively. The proper implementation of ChatGPT in classrooms can enhance student engagement and provide personalized learning experiences. However, it is essential to establish guidelines that promote ethical use and prevent misuse, such as plagiarism or a lack of independent thinking.
To maximize the benefits of ChatGPT, students should be encouraged to use it as a tool for research, brainstorming, and skill development rather than simply copying answers. Critical thinking and independent learning should remain a priority, ensuring that AI enhances, rather than replaces, human effort in education. Schools and universities should offer training programs on the responsible use of AI to help students navigate the challenges of AI-assisted learning.
Additionally, educators should incorporate AI literacy into the curriculum, helping students differentiate between reliable and unreliable information. Policymakers should also develop ethical guidelines and policies to regulate the use of AI in education. ChatGPT can continue to be a powerful ally in modern education by fostering responsible AI use and equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
