Zwitterionic polymers emerge as very useful materials for applications in antifouling surfaces. The properties of these polymers can be tuned by variation of the chemical structure of the corresponding monomer. In this study, two zwitterionic ammonium sulfonate monomers bearing an hydroxyl function and a styrenic polymerizable groups were prepared in two steps. The two monomers were obtained using 4-vinylbenzyl chloride as the key precursor. The zwitterionic monomers were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). These two monomers enable the preparation of novel zwitterionic polymers with enhanced hydrophilicity due to the presence of a hydroxyl group.

In this study, ignition delay and burning rate are experimentally investigated in relation to the effect of pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs), sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), and diesel blends. Single droplet combustion tests were conducted in a combustion system for 21 days using CNTs at concentrations of 50 ppm and 100 ppm, that were dispersed in Colombian commercial diesel and stabilized by SDBS. Additionally, recordings of the combustion were collected, and the Shadowgraph optical method was utilized for monitoring the evolution of droplet size during combustion. The measurements were done over a four-week period. The results demonstrated that the temporal stability has a direct impact on the single droplet combustion tests because a concentration of CNTs of 100 ppm showed higher stability than those achieved by 50 ppm. Consequently, improvements were found with a concentration of 100 ppm, for instance, thermal conductivity increased by about 20%, ignition delay time by 16.2%, and burning rate by 30.5%.

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) is a widely detected replacement for legacy long-chain perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment and human blood samples. Its potential toxicity led to its recent classification as a global regulated persistent organic pollutant. Although animal studies have shown a positive association between PFHxS levels and hepatic steatosis and hepatocellular hypertrophy, the link with liver toxicity, including end-stage liver cancer, remains inconclusive. In this study, we examined the effects of PFHxS on the proliferation of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, Hep3B and SK-Hep1. Cells were exposed to different PFHxS concentrations for 24–48 hr to assess viability and 12–14 days to measure colony formation. Viability of both cell lines increased at PFHxS concentrations <200 μM, decreased at >400 μM, and were highest at 50 μM. Colony formation increased at <300 μM and decreased at 500 μM PFHxS. Consistent with the effect on HCC proliferation, PFHxS increased expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and cell-cycle molecules (CDK2, CDK4, cyclin E, and cyclin D1). In summary, PFHxS exhibited a biphasic effect on HCC cell proliferation, promoting survival and proliferation at lower concentrations and being cytotoxic at higher concentrations. This suggests that PFHxS potentially exacerbates HCC progression.

Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) anionic surfactants are widely used, present in wastewater, and can be discharged causing environmental damage. Without considering biodegradation, sorption and desorption reactions play an important role and depend on the characteristics of the aquifer medium such as the content of organic matter and clay. These processes are modelled with PHREEQC using laboratory-obtained data on columns with an input LAS pulse. LAS adsorption and desorption step experiments carried out in sand columns were also modelled with this software and distribution constants were similar to those obtained for pulse. The values of the starting distribution constant provided by batch tests with sand and agricultural soil mixtures establish the maximum value that must be obtained for column modelling. Distribution constants from column experiments obtained by Freundlich and linear isotherms provided very similar results, the latter with more consistent achievement. The modelling results showed longer elution times in the case of the heavier homologues and with a higher percentage of agricultural soil, which would translate into the great persistence of these compounds in the environment. In the case of soil contamination with wastewater-containing surfactants, these results would allow the development of mitigation strategies for these environmental impacts.

In this work, a novel single crystal (3-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,5-dihydroisoxazol-5-yl)methyl benzenesulfonate has been synthetized via a one-pot sequential strategy under sonication. A single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was reported. In the crystal, a layer structure is generated by C—H···O and C—H···N hydrogen bonds. A Hirshfeld surface analysis indicates that the most important contributions to the crystal packing are from H···H (28.9%), H···O/O···H (26.7%) and H···C/C···H (15.8%) interactions. The optimized structure calculated using density functional theory at the B3LYP/6–311 G+(d,p) level is compared with the experimentally determined structure in the solid state. The calculated highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy gap is 4.6548 eV.
