In this paper, we focus on the impact of financial liberalization on stability of emerging stock market. We identify crises in a group of Latin American (Argentina, Brazil and Chile) and Asian countries (Philippines, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand) during 1975–2005. This paper aims to apply the methodology of CMAX method. Our results indicate that liberalization triggers more unstable stock market in the short run and generate several crises. Still, liberalization seems to generate more stable financial markets in the long run. Financial liberalization does not increase the frequency of crises in emerging countries and at long-term, crises are less several.

Because of the need to replace the current clinical artemisinins in artemisinin combination therapies, we are evaluating fitness of amino-artemisinins for this purpose. These include the thiomorpholine derivative artemiside obtained in one scalable synthetic step from dihydroartemisinin (DHA) and the derived sulfone artemisone. We have recently shown that artemiside undergoes facile metabolism via the sulfoxide artemisox into artemisone and thence into the unsaturated metabolite M1; DHA is not a metabolite. Artemisox and M1 are now found to be approximately equipotent with artemiside and artemisone in vitro against asexual P. falciparum (Pf) blood stage parasites (IC50 1.5 – 2.6 nM). Against Pf NF54 blood stage gametocytes, artemisox is potently active (IC50 18.9 nM early-stage, 2.7 nM late-stage). Comparative drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic (DMPK) properties were assessed via po and iv administration of artemiside, artemisox and artemisone in a murine model. Following oral administration, the composite Cmax value of artemiside plus its metabolites artemisox and artemisone formed in vivo is some 2.6-fold higher than that attained following administration of artemisone alone. Given that efficacy of short half-life rapidly-acting antimalarial drugs such as the artemisinins is associated with Cmax, it is apparent that artemiside will be more active than artemisone in vivo, due to additive effects of the metabolites. As is evident from earlier data, artemiside indeed possesses appreciably greater efficacy in vivo against murine malaria. Overall, the higher exposure levels of active drug following administration of artemiside coupled with its synthetic accessibility indicate it is much the preferred drug for incorporation into rational new artemisinin combination therapies.

Background: Sugar laden foods and carbohydrate rich diets with high glycaemic index intake are associated with weight gain, increased incidence of diabetes and is linked with increased cardiovascular risk. A blend of mulberry leaf extract and apple peel extract (Glubloc™) may reduce postprandial blood glucose surge and insulin response following dietary carbohydrate intake by limiting its digestion and uptake from the gut. Methods: In this randomised, placebo-controlled, crossover study, thirty healthy male and female subjects were supplemented with either placebo or Glubloc™, 10 min before a carbohydrate and sugar rich meal intake. Changes in postprandial blood glucose (upto120 minutes) and insulin levels (at 60 minutes) were measured as the primary endpoints. Changes in blood glucose incremental area under the concentration curve (iAUC), maximum concentration (Cmax) and peak time (Tmax) were compared. Results: Thirty adults (mean age 31±7.2 years, BMI 24±3.8 kg/m2) completed the study and the Glubloc™ blend relative to placebo significantly reduced glucose iAUC at 0.5 h (− 38%, p < 0.0003), 1.0 h (− 30%, p = 0.0007), 1.5 h (− 29%, p = 0.0008), and 2.0 h (− 26%, p = 0.002). A statistically significant reduction in 1 h insulin levels (− 35%, p = 0.029) was observed. Conclusion: A single dose supplementation of Glubloc™ significantly reduced the postprandial blood glucose spike and serum insulin levels. The observation of a significant glucose reduction paralleled with a significant lower insulin response supports a reduced gastrointestinal glucose absorption. None of the subjects experienced any major gastrointestinal side effects. This study builds a body of evidence that the combination of white mulberry leaf and green apple peel extracts (Glubloc™) can be a useful supplement to manage postprandial glucose levels, further studies are necessary to evaluate its potential in type 2 diabetes and the regulation of dysglycaemia.
