Fringe projection profilometry(FPP) has been extensively applied in various fields for its superior fast speed, high accuracy and high data density. However, measuring some objects with high reflective surfaces or high dynamic range surfaces remains challenging for FPP. Some multiple exposure image fusion methods have been proposed and successfully improved the measurement performance for these kinds of objects. Normally, these methods have a relatively fixed sequence of exposure settings determined by artificial experience or trial and error experiments, which may decrease the efficiency of the entire measurement process and may have less robustness to various environmental lighting conditions and object reflective properties. In this paper, a novel self-adaptive multiple exposure image fusion method is proposed with two main aspects of improvement on adaptively optimizing the initial exposure and the exposure sequence. By introducing the theory of information entropy, combined with the analysis of the characterization of fringe image entropy, an adaptive initial exposure searching method is first proposed. Then, an exposure sequence generation method based on dichotomy is further described. On the base of these two improvements, a novel self-adaptive multiple exposure image fusion method for FPP as well as its detailed procedures are given. Experimental results validate the performance of the proposed self-adaptivity multiple exposure image fusion method by measuring the objects with different surface reflectivity and in different ambient lighting conditions.

With the rapid development of MEMS (Micro-electro-mechanical Systems) fabrication technologies, manifolds microelectrodes with various structures and functions have been designed and fabricated for applications in biomedical research, diagnosis and treatment through electrical stimulation and electrophysiological signal recording. The flexible MEMS microelectrodes exhibit multi-aspect excellent characteristics beyond stiff microelectrodes based on silicon or SU-8, which comprising: lighter weight, smaller volume, better conforming to neural tissue and lower fabrication cost. In this paper, we mainly reviewed key technologies on flexible MEMS microelectrodes for neural interface in recent years, including: design and fabrication technology, flexible MEMS microelectrodes with fluidic channels and electrode-tissue interface modification technology for performance improvement. Furthermore, the future directions of flexible MEMS microelectrodes for neural interface were described including transparent and stretchable microelectrodes integrated with multi-aspect functions and next-generation electrode-tissue interface modifications facilitated electrode efficacy and safety during implantation. Finally, the combinations among micro fabrication techniques with biomedical engineering and nanotechnology represented by flexible MEMS microelectrodes for neural interface will open a new gate to human lives and understanding of the world.

Epoxy asphalt (EA) concrete is widely used in constructing long-span steel bridge pavements (SBDPs). This study aims to derive a fatigue damage evolution law, conducting an experimental investigation of SBDP. First, a general theoretical form of the fatigue damage evolution law of materials is established based on the thermal motion of atoms. Then, fatigue experiments demonstrate that this evolution law well represents the known damage–life relationships of SBDP. Taking into account the experimental relationships between damage and fatigue life under symmetrical cyclic loadings with different overload amplitudes and temperature variations, a detailed damage evolution law is deduced. Finally, the role of damage accumulation is discussed on the basis of the proposed damage evolution law for the extreme situation of heavy overload and severe environments. The results show that both heavy loading and falling temperatures increase the fatigue damage of SBDP considerably; therefore, SBDP should avoid heavy loading combined with winter temperatures. EA shows a fatigue life two to three times longer than that of modified matrix asphalt (SMA) or guss asphalt (GA). For the same thickness, EA pavement is demonstrated to be more suitable for an anti-fatigue design of large-span SBDP under high traffic flows and low temperatures.

Mountain ecosystems are crucial for global biodiversity conservation. However, their landscape features are constantly changing owing to urban expansion. Understanding the relationships between biotic communities and landscape features is essential for biodiversity conservation. This study aimed to examine the effect of land-cover type on avian communities in Lishui, a mountainous urban area in eastern China. Avian surveys were conducted using a total of 168 line transects across different land-cover types once per season from December 2019 to January 2021. We assessed the diversity of bird communities by calculating various metrics at both taxonomic and functional levels. Among the land-cover types measured, woodland, built-up land, cultivated land, and water bodies significantly influenced bird community diversity and composition. Species richness, species abundance, and functional richness were negatively correlated with the proportion of woodland but positively correlated with the proportion of non-natural land cover, such as built-up and cultivated land. In contrast, functional evenness was positively correlated with the proportion of woodland and grassland but negatively correlated with the proportion of non-natural land cover. Land-cover type also exhibited significant correlations with avian functional characteristics such as diet, foraging strata, and body mass, thereby influencing the overall community structure. Our results indicated that mountainous landscape patterns substantially affect avian communities. Different land-cover types possess varying resource endowments that affect the distribution of avian species. Therefore, urban landscape planning in mountainous areas should carefully consider the various functions provided to organisms by different types of land cover to promote biodiversity.

In infectious disease and clinical microbiology, rarely encountered species are often of special concern simply by virtue of their unfamiliarity, especially in settings of complicated underlying disease. This is all the more so when the infectious agent has an appearance that distinguishes it from most commonly encountered organisms, making it a mystery that must be explained. In this context, it is rare for histopathologists to be more familiar with a bacterial species than clinical microbiologists but Sarcina ventriculi is one such example. Infrequently seen in tissue and even less often in culture, we here report a case of Sarcina ventriculi in the GI tract of a geriatric patient with complex underlying history. A brief discussion of the history, clinical presentation, treatment, and culture conditions of this organism is provided, along with clarification of nomenclature, which has changed and could otherwise be a source of additional confusion in this rarely encountered bacterium.

Lung cancer remains the most common cancer worldwide with a limited prognosis despite personalized treatment regimens. Low-dose computed tomography (CT) scanning as a means to early diagnosis has been disappointing due to the high false positive rate. Other non-invasive means of testing need to be developed that offer both timely diagnosis and predict prognosis. Methods: In the course of stool testing in a large-scale testing of 2,922 patients at increased risk of CRC we were able to ascertain 112 patients documented to have prospectively been diagnosed with lung cancer. Stool and colonic effluents were tested for p87 with anti-adenoma antibody (Adnab-9) reactivity by ELISA and western blot. Survival data were obtained where available. Results: Of 112 cancers, approximately 27.6% were squamous (SSC), 17.9% were adenocarcinoma, 8% small, 6.25% large cell and 3.57% were designated non-small cell cancer (NSCLC), 0.89% indeterminate, 0.89% lepidic spread (1), 3.57% had metastasis and in 31.25% data was unavailable. 49.1% of the lung cancer patients had fecal Adnab-9 testing. Overall, 60% had positive testing compared to 38%, which was significant (OR2.19[1/06-4.53];p=0.045). Cancers with higher lethality were less likely to test positive (approximately, 8.5% each for both small and large cell lung cancers), and higher, 56% with SCC and 25% for adenocarcinoma. 0% NSCLC). In the larger groups overall survival was worse in those testing positive: 474 testing positive versus 844 days in SCC and 54 testing positive versus 749 days in adenocarcinoma patients. Most importantly, the time from a positive test to the clinical diagnosis ranged from 2.72 years for small cell, 3.13 for adenocarcinoma, 5.07 for NSCLC, 6.07 for SSC, and 6.24 for large cell cancer. In excluded cases where cancer in the lung was believed to be metastatic,83.3% of cancers were positive. Conclusions: At a projected real-world sensitivity of 0.60 and specificity of 0.60 and the ability to predate diagnosis by up to 4.7 years overall, this test could help direct lung cancer screening. In addition, the Adnab-9 testing selectively detects worse tumor types (87.5%) and those with worse prognosis amongst the more common, favorable phenotypes thus making early diagnosis possible in those patients who stand to benefit most from this strategy. Metastatic lung cancer also detected by the test should be identified by the follow-up imaging studies and therefore would not be considered to be a major pitfall.

Objective:This study aims to evaluate the impact of drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) compared to conventional transarterial chemoembolization (cTACE) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), with a specific focus on liver fibrosis progression. By utilizing propensity score matching (PSM), the study seeks to examine the effects of both treatments on liver fibrosis and survival rates, providing evidence to inform clinical decision-making. Methods:This retrospective analysis included HCC patients who underwent DEB-TACE or cTACE at Xuzhou Cancer Hospital between October 2020 and September 2023. Propensity score matching (PSM) was employed to ensure comparability between the two groups based on baseline characteristics, with a 1:1 matching ratio. The primary endpoints included liver fibrosis markers (such as hyaluronic acid, type III procollagen, type IV collagen, and laminin), liver function trends (ALT, AST, TBIL, ALB), and adverse events. Kaplan-Meier methods were used to evaluate progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Results:After PSM, 92 patients were included (46 in the DEB-TACE group and 46 in the cTACE group). Results demonstrated that the DEB-TACE group showed superior outcomes in reducing liver fibrosis markers (e.g., PC-III, IV-C, and LN) compared to the cTACE group. Additionally, the incidence of nausea, vomiting, and postoperative pain was significantly lower in the DEB-TACE group (p < 0.001). Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that PFS and OS were significantly longer in the DEB-TACE group compared to the cTACE group (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis further confirmed the independent protective effect of DEB-TACE in reducing liver fibrosis progression (OR = 2.39, p = 0.044). Conclusion:This study confirms the advantages of DEB-TACE in treating patients with intermediate to advanced HCC, particularly in slowing liver fibrosis progression and improving survival outcomes. The use of propensity score matching enhances the reliability of these findings. Future studies should continue to explore the potential of DEB-TACE in broader patient populations to optimize treatment strategies for HCC.
