We are pleased to announce that Dr. Bruno M. Guerreiro has joined the Advisory Board of Preprints.org, bringing with him a blend of cryobiology research excellence, data science innovation, and a strong commitment to both our community and to open science.
We wish to welcome Dr. Bruno M. Guerreiro and wish for success in both his research and in his contributions to the Preprints.org scholarly community.
Dr. Bruno M. Guerreiro earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from NOVA School of Science and Technology, Portugal. He has accumulated 10 years of cryopreservation research and several recognitions in the field, namely the prestigious John K. Critser Award by The Society for Cryobiology. Dr. Guerreiro has held research positions at institutions including the University of California, Berkeley, and has served as an Assistant Professor at NOVA School of Science and Technology, Portugal. He is also a certified peer reviewer and has contributed as an associate scientific editor to the Portuguese Society of Chemistry (SPQ).
Dr. Guerreiro’s research focuses on data-driven cryopreservation, using biopolymers to control ice nucleation and enhance biological survival to the cold.
His interdisciplinary approach integrates bioinformatics, thermodynamics, molecular dynamics, and machine learning, pushing the boundaries of open-source biotechnology.
Advancing open science together
Dr. Guerreiro’s dedication to open science resonates with our mission to foster transparent, collaborative, and accessible research at Preprints.org.
As he states,
“sometimes ideas do not need to be peer-reviewed for months to generate other ideas for other researchers… Preprints allow you to publish ideas.”
He sees preprints as a powerful tool to achieve the following:
- Secure intellectual ownership;
- Accelerate data sharing;
- Foster progress through feedback;
- Promote transparency.
Having conducted research both in the U.S. at the University of California, Berkeley, and in Europe, Dr. Guerreiro is particularly invested in shifting the cultural perception of preprints within European academia. He joined the Advisory Board to help drive that change. He explained to us that he wanted to contribute in a different way. Beyond authoring papers and being involved in peer review, he also wanted to help shape the ecosystem.
Wanting to help shape the future of the preprints environment is a great aim.
Dr. Guerreiro’s views on preprints
Dr. Guerreiro is also a strong advocate for incorporating preprints into early-career researcher training, seeing it as a vital first step. By involving his students in the preprint process, he helps them gain practical experience in manuscript preparation and submission and engaging with feedback.
He notes that,
“Publishing a preprint can be a first training step for students. It helps them learn how to write, publish, and importantly, how to receive and learn from criticism.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Guerreiro hopes Preprints.org will continue to foster a wider cultural acceptance of preprints among institutions, publishers, and fellow researchers.
When asked on the topic, Dr. Guerreiro suggests,
“Focus on promoting general acceptance of preprints. Work with journals and institutions to change the mindset. Open science should be for everyone, especially the public, who often fund the research with taxes. We need to break down the wall that divides science from society.”
Like many academics, Dr. Guerreiro can be found on Sciprofiles.com. Learn more about him, along with updates on his work.
By welcoming Dr. Guerreiro to our Advisory Board, we continue our mission to foster a more inclusive, transparent, and collaborative research ecosystem. Together, let us work to make research more accessible.
Learn more about the Preprints.org Advisory Board
The Preprints.org Advisory Board is a group of researchers who share guidance and perspective with the Preprints.org team. Their efforts make sure that the platform meets the needs of the scientific community.
The advisory board is made up of active scholars and researchers, many of whom act as editorial board members of peer-reviewed journals.
