Preprints.org Is Indexed in OpenAlex

Preprints.org is pleased to announce that, as of January 2026, preprints posted on our platform are now indexed in OpenAlex, a free open-source catalog of scholarly output. This inclusion contributes to and benefits from a more open and interconnected scholarly ecosystem.

Preprints.org is already indexed by 8 major academic databases, including Web of Science, Crossref, Google Scholar, Dimensions, PrePubMed, SHARE, Scilit, and Europe PMC. Indexing in OpenAlex further expands our discoverability, ensuring that work shared on Preprints.org reaches broader audiences across disciplines and regions.

What Indexing in OpenAlex Means for Authors on Preprints.org

OpenAlex is a key component of the open research infrastructure ecosystem, designed to track connections between scholarly outputs across various formats and platforms, aiming to make global research freely accessible to everyone, everywhere.

At the end of 2025, OpenAlex expanded its coverage with the launch of its fully rewritten codebase, Walden, adding over 190 million new works. This update included datasets, software, and other research objects from DataCite and thousands of repositories, making millions of previously hard-to-find works truly discoverable.

Indexing in OpenAlex further strengthens the visibility of work posted on Preprints.org by:

  • Improving discoverability

With more than 3 million monthly pageviews in 2025, OpenAlex is widely used by researchers, institutions, developers, and data analysts as a discovery tool, making preprints hosted on our platform more visible within the global scholarly ecosystem.

  • Greater exposure through API

Indexing in an open, API-ready dataset makes Preprints.org content accessible to universities, national governments, analytics platforms, and research evaluation workflows worldwide.
