Abstract
In this brief overview, we delve into the world of library consortia. As stewards of knowledge and resources, understanding the dynamics of these collaborative entities is crucial in today’s evolving library landscape. A library consortium is a group of Libraries who partner to coordinate activities, share resources, and combine expertise. This paper is mainly highlights for consortia definition, needs, features, functions, models, prerequisite for library consortia formation, library consortia in India, consortia may focus on and challenges of library consortia.

Introduction

Library consortia play a crucial role in academia and research by fostering collaboration and resource sharing among libraries. A library consortium is an alliance of libraries, typically academic or research-oriented, that leverage their collective strength and provide enhanced services to their respective institutions and patrons. These consortia are robust networks, enabling libraries to access a broader range of resources, reduce costs, and promote cooperation in collection development, digitization efforts, and innovative technology solutions. Through their collaborative efforts, library consortia contribute significantly to advancing knowledge and facilitating greater access to information, benefiting scholars, students, and the wider community.
Library consortia could be specific library type, large or small, formal or informal, local, regional, national or international. It could lead from discovery to delivery like resource sharing through inter-library loan, cooperative collection development, shared e-resources, technology and networking support and service, shared database purchases, training, consulting and professional development.

Definitions of Library Consortia

A consortia is an association of two or more individuals, companies, organizations or governments (or any combination of these entities) with the objective of participating in a common activity or pooling their resources for achieving a common goal. Consortium is a Latin word, meaning ‘partnership, association or society’ and derives from consors ‘partner’, itself from con- ‘together’ and sors ‘fate’, meaning owner of means or comrade.
Aldrich, Bolton, and Sasaki (1998) assessed the meaning that “Consortia usually involve horizontal collaboration among direct competitors.”
Hirshon (1999) explained that “Library Consortia is a generic term to indicate any group of libraries that are working together towards a common goal whether to expand cooperation on traditional library services such as collection development or electronic information services.” Oxford English Dictionary defines “Consortium as an association typically of several companies for a common purpose; it is an association of similar type of organization who are engaged for producing and servicing the common things for providing services for a specific purpose of its users.”

Need for Library Consortia

Several factors call for the adoption of consortium among libraries. Some of the major factors are

Library consortia helps to library to achieve library objective, every library have common objective “right information to right user, at right time” for satisfy our users There must be accessibility to the variety of information reserves particularly in an environment of proliferating electronic information resources in order to education, research and lifelong learning.
