Considering the significant interest in the synthesis and various properties of the polymorphs of tin dioxide (SnO2), they are still comparatively rare in modern photovoltaic techniques. The hybrid organic-inorganic lead perovskites have triggered a revolution among solar cell researchers due to their low cost and ultrahigh power conversion efficiency. In this research, the optical properties of seven stable polymorphs (Balakrishnan Kanimozhi et al. ACS omega 7, 12 (2022): 10382-10393) of SnO2 have been investigated using first-principles approaches. The effective mass of stable SnO2 polymorphs has been computed and it is found to vary depending on the specific polymorph and the direction in which it is measured. Moreover, the spectroscopic limited maximum efficiency (SLME) of SnO2 polymorphs was also computed and compared to that of other efficient perovskite solar cells. Both Pnnm and Pbca have equivalent efficiency in comparison to the rutile polymorph. Three of the seven stable polymorphs are effective in solar cell applications. This study is the very first attempt to examine the atomic structure and electronic properties of various SnO2 polymorphs using X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) at both the Sn-K-edge and O-K-edge wavelengths. Our findings, as mentioned in this paper, may be an important advancement in the understanding of these materials, thereby facilitating the development of more efficient photovoltaic devices.

Hydrodechlorination reaction of 3-(benzo-1,3-dioxol-5-yl)-3-chloro-2-methylacrylaldehyde in the presence of different low metal content heterogeneous mono- or bi-metallic catalysts was tested for the synthesis of the fragrance Helional® (3-[3,4-methylendioxyphenyl]-2-methyl-propionaldehyde). In particular, mono Pd/Al2O3, Rh/Al2O3 or bi-metallic Pd-Cu/Al2O3, Rh-Cu/Al2O3 catalysts were tested in different reaction conditions from which it emerged that mono-Rh/Al2O3 was the best performing catalyst allowing to achieve 100% substrate conversion and 99% selectivity towards Helional® in 24h at 80°C, p(H2) 1.0 MPa in the presence of a base. To establish correlations between atomic structure and catalytic activity, catalysts were characterized by Cu, Rh and Pd K-edge XANES, EXAFS analysis. These characterizations allowed to verify that the formation of Pd-Cu alloys and the presence of Cu oxide/hydroxide species on the surface of the Al2O3 support, are responsible for the very low catalytic efficiency of bimetallic species tested.

This study investigated the speciation, transformation and availability of P during indigenous vegetable production by employing a combination of chemical and spectroscopic techniques. The study focused upon sites in two ecozones of SSA, the Dry Savanna (lna, Benin Republic) and Rainforest (Ilesha, Nigeria). Both sites were cultivated with two indigenous vegetable species; local amaranth (Amaranthus cruentus (AV)) and African eggplant (Solanum macrocarpon (SM)). The soils were treated with 5 t/ha poultry manure and urea fertilizer at the rate of 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 kg N/ha. Soil samples were collected before planting and after harvest. Phosphorus K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy was used to determine P speciation in these soils. Quantitative analysis showed that adsorbed and organic P were the two dominant P species in the manure amended Dry Savanna (DS) soils before planting and after harvest in soils cultivated with both AV and SM, with the addition of urea (40 kg N/ha) causing an increase in the organic P form in Dry Savanna soils cultivated with AV. Soils of the Rainforest (RF) cultivated with AV initially had large amounts of apatite P in the manure amended soils prior to planting which was transformed to adsorbed and organic P after harvest. Urea addition to the Rainforest soils shifted the dominant P species from organic P to adsorbed and apatite P, which is likely to limit P availability. Soils cultivated with SM had similar proportions of both organic and adsorbed P forms, with 40 kg N/ha addition slightly increased the proportion of adsorbed P.

The heavy transition metal tantalum (Ta) offers a wide range of applications, especially in the field of electronics, e.g. Ta capacitors with a comparatively long life-time. Therefore, electronic scrap containing these components is a potentially valuable secondary source of this metal. However, the recovery of Ta, as other critical raw materials, that are lost in pyrometallurgical slags can be a challenging process. As a way of overcome this, the "engineered artificial minerals" EnAM approach is proposed by first searching for suitable host minerals and characterizing them. A favorable prerequisite is the enrichment of the desired element(s) in compounds that have particularly suitable properties for this purpose, such as morphology, crystal size, surface or magnetic properties. Subsequently, the slag system is adapted (e.g. chemism, solidification curve, cooling and holding times) to optimize this compound. This paper presents the results of mineralogical characterization of Ta-containing iron (Fe)-rich synthetic slags in reducing environment under different cooling rates, and describes and discusses the incorporation of Ta into the different compounds detected by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and electron beam microanalysis (EPMA). Additionally, the speciation of Fe and Ta was accessible through X-Ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. EPMA also provides a first semi-quantitative assessment of the Ta distribution in these individual compounds. According to this, depending on the cooling rate the enrichment factor is highest in tantalite/perovskite-type oxides (FexTayO6, CaxFeyTazO3) with up to 60 wt.% Ta and ‘tantalomagnetite’ (FeII(FeIII(2-5/3xTax)O4) with a maximum of ~ 30 wt.% Ta (only fast cooling). This is followed by a perovskite-like silicon containing oxide (XYO3) with 12-15 wt.-% Ta (only slow cooling), and a hedenbergite-like compound (XYZ2O6) with varying content of 0.3 - 7 wt.-%. The Ta-concentration in pure Fe, Fe(1-x)O, hercynitic spinel and hematite is negligible. Since a larger fraction of potentially amorphous hedenbergitic matrix is formed at faster cooling, in this case the main Ta is enriched in this compound despite the significantly lower Ta content.

The flux growth of InVO4 bulk single crystals has been explored for the first time. The reported eutectic composition at a ratio of V2O5:InVO4 = 1:1 could not be used as a self-flux, since no sign of melting was observed up to 1100 °C. Crystals of InVO4 of typical size 0.5×1×7 mm3 were obtained using copper pyrovanadate (Cu2V2O7) as a flux, using Pt crucibles. XRD confirmed the orthorhombic Cmcm structure. Rests of flux material were observed on the sample surface, with occasional traces of Pt indicating some level of reaction with the crucible. X-ray absorption spectroscopy showed that oxidation states of indium and vanadium ions are +3 and +5, respectively. The size and high quality of the obtained InVO4 crystals makes them excellent candidates for the further study of their physical properties.
