Knowing the mechanical properties of fibrous composite materials used in aeronautical industry from the design phase is a primary objective for designers. There are many methods for determining them, but they are laborious and require a long calculation time. And some of the methods are very approximate, giving only upper and lower bounds for these values. Experimental measurements also consume time and others resources. A method for sufficiently accurate and quickly obtained estimation of the engineering constants of the homogenized material is presented in the work. FEM is used to determine the natural frequencies of a standard bar, for which there are sufficiently precise classical methods for expressing these constants according to the properties of the homogenized material. In this way, these sought constants can be determined. In the work, Young's modulus will be determined for such a material, using the relationships that provide the proper pulsations for the longitudinal vibrations. Within the adopted model, transverse and torsional vibrations will be eliminated by blocking the nodes on the surface of the bars. In this way, more longitudinal self-pulsations can be obtained, so the precision in calculating the Young's modulus will increase.

Foam concrete is a construction material with controllable low strength and untraditional physical properties. Its highly crushable nature leaves it a niche as an engineered energy-absorbing material in many value-added applications; however, fundamental understanding of the material properties is crucial. As foam concrete is highly cellularized and ductile, conventional concrete testing methods such as compression test are insufficient to characterize the key material attributes of foam concrete, especially when the foam density is low. The resonant frequency test (ASTM C215) is specified for evaluating dynamic Young’s modulus of normal concrete. Inspired by the non-destructive feature of this test, we investigate the possibility of using the resonant frequency test to continuously monitor the modulus build-up of foam concrete with age. For the representativeness of the samples, three variables are considered in material design—bulk density ranging from 0.4 to 1.2 g/cm3, water to cementitious materials ratio of 0.42 and 0.47, and fly ash replacement of 10 and 30% by weight of cement. After examining the different vibration modes, the fundamental transverse frequency is determined most suitable for interpreting the foam modulus. The experimental results demonstrate good accuracy of using this approach for the measurement of different samples. It is also confirmed that, for a given foam concrete, the foam modulus can be predicted by knowing the foam density and solid modulus of its base cement paste, which provides an important insight for the further studies and real applications of foam concrete.

When developing bone implants Young's modulus is one of the primary characteristics of the material that should be considered. The study focuses on the possibility of regulating the modulus of the alloy Ti-50.8 at % Ni by varying its initial structure as well as aging-induced microstructure in a wide range. Microstructure observations were performed using TEM and SEM observations. The calorimetric studies of martensitic transformations were carried out using "Mettler Toledo 822e". Tensile tests were performed in a test temperature range of ‒196≤T≤+100°C using an «IN-STRON 5966». The grain/subgrain size of B2-austenite strongly affects the modulus magnitude. This effect is ambiguous for a material with a grain size of 0.13–3 µm and depends on the test temperature. The effectiveness of aging on the modulus reduction depends on the initial structure: it is most pronounced in an alloy with a relatively coarse grain size of 9 µm and brings a decrease by 3.8 times at a temperature of 37°C. Bone-like elastic modulus (10–30 GPa) at a human body temperature of 37°C is realized in an aged fine-grained NiTi alloy. An ultrafine-grained sub-structure exhibits he same values of Young's modulus in the temperature range from -100°С to 25°С.

In this study, the determination of static E50 and υ parameters of rock materials was investigated using P-S wave velocities and Shore hardness (SH), non-destructive measurement methods. We used multiple linear regression (MLR), multiple non-linear regression (MNLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) models to estimate and determine these parameters. When the models defined by MLR, MNLR, and ANN were compared to the R2 values, ANN models that estimate E50 and υ parameters of rock materials using non-destructive methods (Vp, Vs, Vp/Vs, d, and SH) could be determined with higher accuracy than MLR and MNLR models. The study’s originality is based on the fact that ores such as galena, chromite, and barite have been studied for the first time on rock mechanics, and in this respect, it offers an innovative perspective. In addition, the use of all non-destructive measurement methods, Vp, Vs, and Shore hardness tests, also increases the originality of the study.

The optimization of production of lignin-nanofiber-filled thermoplastic starch composite film for potential application in food packaging was carried using Response Surface Methodology (RSM), through the adoption of the Box-Wilson Central Composite Design (CCD) with 1 center point. The effects of filler loading on moisture absorption (MAB), tensile strength [TS], percent elongation [PE] and Young’s modulus [YM]) of the films were investigated in order to construct the desirability indices of the composite. The quality of the fitting model was expressed by the coefficient of determination, R2 and the adjusted R2. Results showed that the nanocomposite films were best fitted by a quadratic regression model with a high coefficient of determination (?2) value. The selected film has desirability of 76.80%, close to the objective function, and contained 4.81% lignin and 5.00% nanofibre. The MAB, TS, YM and PE of the selected film were 17.80 %, 21.51 MPa, 25.76 MPa and 48.81%, respectively. The addition of lignin and nanofiber to starch composite reduced the moisture absorption tendency but increased the mechanical properties of the films due to the good filler/matrix interfacial adhesion. Conclusively, results suggested that these films would be suitable for packaging application.

Wood plastic composite usage and demands have increased due to chemical, and mechanical properties when compared to plastic materials. However, because of the possibility of structural and mechanical changes of the material when exposed to external environment more research needs to be done. In the present study yellow birch/HDPE composites materials made by injection molding were treated by zinc oxide and exposed to fungal rots. Mechanical properties of the composites were assessed by Tensile and Izod impact test. The impact energies of the samples loaded with 30 % ZnO-treated fibers and exposed to G. trabeum and T. versicolor decreased, compared to when samples were not treated with ZnO. The mechanical properties of all samples treated with ZnO and exposed to rot decreased which were reported as a decreased Young's modulus and impact energies. ZnO prevented mycelium proliferation which was nonexistent on samples. It has been noted that the decrease in mechanical properties of treated samples was due to NaOH used to dissolve the ZnO powder.

Abstract: The high entropy alloy (HEA) of equiatomic composition CrNiFeCoMn and with FCC 11 crystal structure was prepared by either induction melting and additive manufacturing with a se- 12 lective laser melting (SLM) process, starting from mechanically alloyed powders. Unlike induction 13 melting, the as-produced SLM alloy showed fine nitride and Cr-rich s phase precipitates. Mechan- 14 ical spectroscopy measurements were performed on specimens cold worked and/or recrystallized. 15 Young’s modulus values of (140±10) GPa and (90±10) GPa were measured at 300 K for induction 16 melted and SLM samples, respectively. The values increased to (160±10) GPa and (170±10) GPa for 17 recrystallized samples. Damping measurements as a function of temperature showed two peaks 18 which were attributed to dislocations bending and grain boundaries sliding. The peaks were super- 19 posed on a temperature increasing background.

Extruded polystyrene (XPS) is frequently used in the construction of many different structures. It is therefore necessary to appropriately characterize its mechanical properties to ensure the safety of said structures. Among the available characterization tests, static bending tests are simple and easy to perform; owing to these characteristics, they should be performed more frequently than other tests. However, in static bending tests on XPS, there are several challenges owing to the high flexibility of XPS, and the chosen testing method and sample configuration affect the accuracy of characterization. In this study, three bending properties (Young’s modulus, proportional limit stress, and bending strength) of samples cut from an XPS panel were determined using three-point bending (TPB), four-point bending (FPB), and compression bending (CB) tests with varying sample span/depth ratios, and statistical analyses were performed to determine the relevance of the tests. The experimental results suggest that the TPB and CB tests were more feasible than the FPB test when the span/depth ratio was appropriately determined. However, clear differences were observed in the sample bending properties determined in these tests. In light of these findings, further studies should be conducted to elucidate these differences.
