Effective development of digital twins of real-world objects requires sophisticated data collection techniques and algorithms for automated modeling of individual objects. In City Information Modeling (CIM) systems, individual buildings can be modeled automatically at the second Level Of Detail or LOD 2. Similarly, automated solutions for 3D modeling of individual trees at different levels of details are required for Tree Information Modeling (TIM) and building Forest Digital Twins (FDT). The existing algorithms support the automated modeling of trees by generating models of the canopy and the lower part of the trunk. Our work in this paper is based on the assumption that, similar to the canopy shape, the structure of tree trunk and branches is also an important consideration. An algorithm for automated modeling of tree trunks is proposed. Aiming to generate 3D models of tree trunks, the suggested approach starts by extracting the trunk point cloud, which is then segmented into single stems. Finally, the individual stems are modeled by dividing them into slices. The geometry of the developed tree models is represented in a matrix format. This solution enables automatic comparisons of tree elements over time, which is necessary for monitoring changes in forest stands and promoting sustainable forest management. Despite the huge variation of trunk geometric forms, the proposed modeling approach can gain an accuracy of better than 4 cm in the constructed tree trunk models.

Recent advances in sensor and platform technologies such as satellite systems, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), manned aerial platforms, and ground-based sensor networks have resulted in massive volumes of data is produced and collected about the earth. Processing, managing, and analyzing these data is one of the main challenges in 3D synthetic representation used in modeling and simulation (M&S) of the natural environment. M&S devices, such as flight simulators, traditionally require a variety of different databases to provide a synthetic representation of the world. M&S often requires integration of data from a variety of sources stored in different formats. Thus, for simulation of a complex synthetic environment, such as a 3D terrain model, tackling interoperability among its components (geospatial data, natural and man-made objects, dynamic and static models) is a critical challenge. Conventional approaches used local proprietary data models and formats. These approaches often lacked interoperability and created silos of content within the simulation community. Therefore, open geospatial standards are increasingly perceived as a means to promote interoperability and reusability for 3D M&S. In this paper, the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) CDB Standard is introduced. “CDB” originally refers to Common DataBase which is currently considered as a name with no abbreviation in the OGC community. The OGC CDB is an international standard for structuring, modeling, and storing geospatial information required in high performance modeling and simulation applications. CDB defines the core conceptual models, use cases, requirements, and specifications for employing geospatial data in 3D M&S. The main features of the OGC CDB Standard are described as run-time performance, full plug-and-play interoperable geospatial data store, usefulness in 3D and dynamic simulation environment, ability to integrate proprietary and open-source data formats. Furthermore, compatibility with the OGC standards baseline reduces the complexity of discovering, transforming, and streaming geospatial data into the synthetic environment and makes them more widely acceptable to major geospatial data/software producers. This paper includes an overview of OGC CDB version 1.0 which defines a conceptual model and file structure for the storage, access, and modification of a multi-resolution 3D synthetic environment data store. Finally, this paper presents a perspective of future versions of the OGC CDB and what the steps are for humanizing the OGC CDB standard with the other OGC/ISO standards baseline.

The ongoing expansion in volume, velocity and variety of geospatial data has stimulated the development of artificial intelligence applications and associated online cartographic visualizations. In this context, the cartographic communication through peer-reviewed media evolved to incorporate Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Re-usability (FAIR) principles. In this paper, we review the functionalities proposed by current international peer-reviewed media for accessing, exploring and re-using geospatial data, and situate them on a diagram conceived for peer-reviewed cartography in the artificial intelligence era. We then present an overview of the cartographic infrastructure and workflow currently available in the Terra Digitalis journal for the online publication of massive spatiotemporal data. This free and opensource based solution allows a smooth integration, from data submission to final peer reviewed publication, of dynamic, interactive 2D and 3D maps. As a proof of concept, we present two maps derived from massive spatiotemporal data, related, respectively, to a climate numerical model (raster data) and a bike sharing system’s origin-destination dataset (vector data). We argue that the combination of technologies used in the journal provides an efficient and low-cost solution, unmatched by other publication media, to boost the accessibility and FAIR principles for geospatial big data.

In 2012 the Open Geospatial Consortium published GeoSPARQL defining “an RDF/OWL ontology for [spatial] information”, “SPARQL extension functions” for performing spatial operations on RDF data and “RIF rules” defining entailments to be drawn from graph pattern matching. In the 8+ years since its publication, GeoSPARQL has become the most important spatial Semantic Web standard, as judged by references to it in other Semantic Web standards and its wide use for Semantic Web data. An update to GeoSPARQL was proposed in 2019 to deliver a version 1.1 with a charter to: handle outstanding change requests and source new ones from the user community and to “better present” the standard, that is to better link all the standard’s parts and better document & exemplify elements. Expected updates included new geometry representations, alignments to other ontologies, handling of new spatial referencing systems, and new artifact presentation. In this paper, we describe motivating change requests and actual resultant updates in the candidate version 1.1 of the standard alongside reference implementations and usage examples. We also describe the theory behind particular updates, initial implementations of many parts of the standard, and our expectations for GeoSPARQL 1.1’s use.

Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are thought to be relevant to the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Glutathione (GSH) homeostasis fulfills a number of important roles in mitochondria, such as maintenance of mitochondrial DNA and respiratory competency of cells. Although the transport of mitochondrial GSH (mGSH) is not fully understood, increasing evidence from non-ocular tissues suggests that OGC (2-oxoglutarate carrier, SLC25A11) and DIC (dicarboxylate carrier, SLC25A10) are involved in mGSH transport. However, whether OGC and DIC mediate the transfer of GSH into the mitochondria of retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE) remains unknown. Thus, we investigated the expression, localization, and function of OGC and DIC in human RPE (hRPE) in relation to oxidative stress and GSH. Both OGC and DIC are expressed in hRPE and are localized in mitochondria. We also found a dose and time-dependent decrease of OGC and DIC expression under oxidative stress and increased expression in polarized RPE. Our data show that the downregulation of OGC and DIC resulted in increased apoptosis and mGSH depletion which can be overcome by co-treatment with GSH-MEE. These findings suggest that overexpression of OGC and DIC may be an effective strategy to decrease susceptibility to mitochondrial toxicants by elevation of mGSH.
