Abstract

This paper investigates the advances in Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) technology and its application in enhancing transient stability in power systems. FACTS devices are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to improve power system performance by controlling power flow, voltage, and stability. Various FACTS technologies are reviewed, including Static Var Compensator (SVC), Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), and Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC), among others. The impact of these technologies on power system stability is examined and a comprehensive analysis of their effectiveness in mitigating transient stability issues is provided. Recommendations for future research in the field of FACTS technology for improving the reliability and stability of power systems are given in the conclusion.

Comment: The wide implementation of renewable sources in the power system, especially recently, creates a number of problems in the functioning of the system. According to their variable and intermittent production, and due to the need to maintain the stability and control of the system, it is necessary to know the parameters of the system in any moment. This paper correctly recognized these problems, and gave a broader overview of FACTS devices that have been developed as regulators of system parameters, such as voltage, frequency, phase angle, etc. However, although there are great benefits from the use of such devices, their wider application has not yet occurred, primarily because of the high cost of such devices, as well as the difficulty to establish economic benefit in relation to their cost. This was correctly stated in the paper, and a proposal was made for the development of standardized effectiveness metrics for the evaluation of various FACTS technologies and increasing of their usage. In terms of looking at the mentioned facts, this paper fully satisfied the set goal.

Comment: Interesting review of the latest research in a growing field of electrical engineering. It would be interesting to see further collaboration with manufacturers and industry stakeholders to obtain information on the total capital requirements and operational costs of FACTS devices, while respecting confidentiality agreements, to see real-world economic data in the field which would be a great starting point for additional implementation by power system operators.

Comment: The paper provides a comprehensive review of various FACTS technologies and their impact on power system stability and emphasizes the importance of considering the cost-effectiveness of FACTS devices and the need for standardized metrics to evaluate different technologies accurately, which would be interesting to see expanded upon. Further elaboration on cost-effectiveness metrics is something that would elevate the paper and make it stand out more and provide additional direction for other researchers.
