Electromyostimulation (EMS) has been shown to improve body composition, but what biomarkers it affects has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to compare the EMS-effect of aerobic dance on fatness and biomarkers’ levels in obese elderly women. Methods: Twenty-five women with obesity were randomly classified into a control group (CON; n = 12) and EMS group (EMSG; n = 13). EMS suits used in this study enabled the simultaneous activation of eight muscles with selectable intensities. Program sessions of EMS were combined with aerobic dance three times a week for 8 weeks. Although both groups received the same program, CON did not receive electrical stimuli. Results: Compared with CON, a significant effect of the EMS intervention concerning decreased fatness, as well as an increased skeletal muscle mass and basal metabolic rate, were evident. Compared with CON, aerobic dancing with an EMS suit also improved biomarkers in EMSG. Cytokines, including interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor, C-reactive protein, resistin, and carcinoembryonic antigen were significantly changed in EMSG, whereas those of CON did not change from the baseline to the end of the experiment. These results showed significant differences between groups. Similarly, the changes caused by EMS were represented in high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. Conclusions: The results indicate that a significant effect due to the EMS intervention was found concerning body composition and biomarkers in obese elderly women.

Metagenomics have opened our eyes to the otherwise enigmatic microbial consortia that relies on different human body niches that impact on disease pathogenesis. This work originally aims to re-analyse a public shotgun metagenomics dataset to glean insights on the microbial species that may partake in stomach cancer pathogenesis. However, a random selection of sequenced reads reveals poor percent identities (79 to 94%) of the microbial identification obtained in a BLAST search. This surprising result suggests possible stomach acid induced degradation or modification of the sequenced read that reduced the effectiveness of the metagenomics approach in microbial identification. Further analysis of the dataset highlights that poor percent identities did not arise due to highly fragmented nature of the genetic material where there is a good abundance of sequenced reads in the 100 to 1300 base pair category. More intriguingly, attempts to obtain a correlation between percent identity and read length did not reveal a correlation which meant that stomach acid did not modify all types of nucleotides. More likely, stomach acid only modified low abundance nucleotide in this case, which point to the probability of identifying a microbe in the modified gene fragment in totally unpredictable ways. Overall, data reported in this work suggests caution in the interpretation of results of shotgun metagenomics studies of stomach cancer microbiota where stomach acid likely degraded the genetic material of microbes that may result in mis-identification.

The optimization of production of lignin-nanofiber-filled thermoplastic starch composite film for potential application in food packaging was carried using Response Surface Methodology (RSM), through the adoption of the Box-Wilson Central Composite Design (CCD) with 1 center point. The effects of filler loading on moisture absorption (MAB), tensile strength [TS], percent elongation [PE] and Young’s modulus [YM]) of the films were investigated in order to construct the desirability indices of the composite. The quality of the fitting model was expressed by the coefficient of determination, R2 and the adjusted R2. Results showed that the nanocomposite films were best fitted by a quadratic regression model with a high coefficient of determination (?2) value. The selected film has desirability of 76.80%, close to the objective function, and contained 4.81% lignin and 5.00% nanofibre. The MAB, TS, YM and PE of the selected film were 17.80 %, 21.51 MPa, 25.76 MPa and 48.81%, respectively. The addition of lignin and nanofiber to starch composite reduced the moisture absorption tendency but increased the mechanical properties of the films due to the good filler/matrix interfacial adhesion. Conclusively, results suggested that these films would be suitable for packaging application.

(1) Background: Among the chronic complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus, cancer became the leading cause of death in several countries. Our objective was the determination of whether prevalent type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with a higher incidence of cancer. (2) Methods: This study is a nationwide analysis performed in Hungary. Study population was divided into a group with type 2 diabetes mellitus and into a non-diabetic group. The primary outcome was the risk related to overall cancer incidence. A key secondary outcome was the overall incidence of cancer in distinct study years. Further outcomes were the annual percent changes. (3) Results: The odds ratio related to the overall incidence of cancer was 2.50 (95% confidence interval: 2.46-2.55, P<0.0001) in patients with diabetes as related to controls. The odds ratio was higher in males than in females. The highest risk was found in the 18-39-year-old subgroup. The annual cancer incidence rate declined in controls, but not in patients with diabetes. Several types of cancer showed a decreasing tendency in non-diabetic controls.; (4) Conclusions: type 2 diabetes is associated with a higher risk of cancer. High risk in young patients with type 2 diabetes suggests that these young individuals should be considered as a risk group.

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) remains a significant global health concern, being one of the most important contributors to morbidity and mortality worldwide. Accurate assessment of coronary lesions is crucial for guiding appropriate interventions and optimizing patient outcomes. Patients with acute myocardial infarction represent a population which is rarely selected in studies of intracoronary hemodynamics. Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) has emerged as a valuable physiological index for evaluating the functional significance of coronary lesions, although the data of intravascular hemodynamic evaluation in patients with acute myocardial infarction is scarce [1-3]. In recent years, advancements in intravascular imaging techniques, such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), have provided detailed insights into coronary anatomy both in acute or elective settings. [4-7]. Methods: This article aims to explore the correlation between different non-culprit vessel OCT-parameters and FFR value in the patients with recent acute myocardial infarction. The study included 114 patients with acute myocardial infarction (ST elevation myocardial infarction and non ST elevation myocardial infarction)for whom primary PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) was performed for the culprit lesion. The non-culprit vessels with intermediate coronary stenoses (157 lesions) were evaluated in a staged procedure (during the index hospitalization) with OCT, FFR and revascularization was performed accordingly. Minimal luminal area (MLA) and percent luminal area stenosis (PSA) were analyzed in relation with the FFR value. Results: There is good correlation between OCT-derived parameters and FFR values in patients with recent acute myocardial infarction. Minimal luminal area (MLA) and percent luminal stenosis area (PSA) were independent predictors of FFR< 0,80 in multivariate logistic regression analysis. A value of 2,08 mm2 for the MLA and 76,85 % for the PSA have proved to be the best cut-offs for predicting a FFR< 0,80. Conclusions: OCT parameters are valuable additional tools in current angiographic practice, including patients with acute myocardial infarction, with the ability to bring numerous direct imagistic and indirect hemodynamic information.
