The surface fluorination of polypropylene (PP) was performed using F2 and O2 gas mixtures with different F2 gas proportions at 25 °C and 13.3 kPa for 1 h. The surface roughness of the fluorinated PP samples was approximately 1.5 times higher than that of the untreated sample (5 nm). The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that the PP-derived bonds (-C-C- and -CHx) decreased because they were converted into polar groups (-C–O, -CHF-, and -CFx), which increased the surface electronegativity of PP. The variation in the F2 gas proportion in the gas mixture significantly affected the hydrophilicity and surface composition of PP. At F2 gas proportions of <70%, the hydrophilicity of the fluorinated PP samples improved. Notably, the hydrophilic and negatively charged PP surface enhanced the dyeing of the polymer with basic methylene blue (MB). In contrast, at F2 gas proportions of >90%, the PP surface became hydrophobic owing to increased hydrophobic -CF3 bonds. Thus, enhanced PP dyeing can be controlled based on the composition of the F2 and O2 gas mixture.

In this study we present gas-phase fluorination as a method to create a thin LiF layer on Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.5O12 (LLZTO). We compare these fluorinated films with LiF films produced by RF-magnetron sputtering, where we investigated the interface between the LLZTO and the deposited LiF showing no formation of a reaction layer. Furthermore, we investigate the ability of this LiF layer as a protection layer against Li2CO3 formation in ambient air. By this we show that Li2CO3 formation is absent at the LLZTO surface after 24 h in ambient air supporting the protective character of the formed LiF films and hence could enhance the handling of LLZTO in air for battery production. With respect to the use within hybrid electrolytes consisting of LLZTO and a mixture of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and Lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) we also investigated the interface between the formed LiF films and a mixture of PEO LiTFSI by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showing decomposition of the LiTFSI at the interface.

Fluorine represents a privileged building block in pharmaceutical chemistry. Diethylaminosulfur-trifluoride (DAST) is a reagent commonly used for replacement of alcoholic hydroxyl groups with fluorine and is also known to catalyze water elimination and cyclic Beckmann-rearrangement type reactions. In this work we aimed to use DAST for diversity-oriented semisynthetic transformation of natural products bearing multiple hydroxyl groups to prepare new bioactive compounds. Four ecdysteroids, including a new constituent of Cyanotis arachnoidea, were selected as starting materials for DAST-catalyzed transformations. The newly prepared compounds represented combinations of various structural changes DAST was known to catalyze, and a unique cyclopropane ring closure that was found for the first time. Several compounds demonstrated in vitro antitumor properties. A new 17-N-acetylecdysteroid (13) exerted potent antiproliferative activity and no cytotoxicity on drug susceptible and multi-drug resistant mouse T-cell lymphoma cells. Further, compound 13 acted in significant synergism with doxorubicin without detectable direct ABCB1 inhibition. Our results demonstrate that DAST is a versatile tool for diversity-oriented synthesis to expand chemical space towards new bioactive compounds.
