Abstract: Development of the fast neutron radiography with higher penetration capability in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques is rapidly. The detection efficiency and the imaging spatial resolution are the main problem of the radiography detector for many fast neutron imaging systems. In this paper, a detector composed of pixelated EJ200 scintillator array，an 16 × 16 silicon-photomultipliers (SiPM) array, and a capacitive multiplexing network readout electronics is designed. Using Monte-Carlo simulations，the main parameters of the detector was optimization. Then the detector prototype was fabricated and tested at a 14 MeV D-T neutron source. The preliminary test results showed that the prototype has spatial resolution of 1.26 mm. Using pixelated scintillator structure，the conflict between spatial resolution and detect efficiency could improved. Moreover, SiPMs offer a flexibility for the expansion of application field of the imaging system due to their excellent photon detection performance, relatively low price and joint possibility for large area.

NUSES is a pathfinder satellite project hosting two detectors: Terzina dedicated to the study of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) above 100 PeV and Zirè focused on the study of protons and electrons below 250 MeV and MeV gamma rays. This work concerns mainly the description of the Cherenkov camera, composed of SiPMs, for the Terzina telescope. Cherenkov light produced by extensive air showers induced by Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays in the atmosphere could be detected from space, thus ensuring huge exposures. The Terzina telescope is being designed to detect such light. It has an effective area of about 0.1 m2 and an equivalent focal length of about 930 mm with a diameter of the circle containing 80% of the photons of less than 1 mm2. The photo-detection plane is composed of 2×5 SiPM arrays with 8×8 channels of 3×3 mm2 pixels each. To increase the data-taking period NUSES orbit will be sun-synchronous (with a height of about 550 km), thus allowing Terzina to point always towards the dark side of the Earth’s limb. The sun-synchronous orbit requires small distances to the poles, and as a consequence the expected dose received by the SiPMs will be 10 Gy during three year of NUSES mission. About 70% of the integral dose is delivered by the electrons and secondary gammas created in the mechanical structure and about 30% from protons. This estimation is done with the Geant4 simulation of the preliminary telescope geometry, without taking into account solar wind protons. We study the SiPM photo sensors under the irradiation received by the 50 MeV protons up to 30 Gy of total integrated dose corresponding to 9 years of the satellite operation.

The main consequence of radiation damage on a Silicon-Photomultiplier (SiPM) is a significant increase in the dark current. If the SiPM is not adequately cooled, the power dissipation causes it to heat up, which in turn affects its performance based on the temperature. In order to investigate this heating effect, experiments were carried out using a KETEK SiPM glued on an Al2O3 substrate, as well as HPK SiPMs that were either glued onto an Al2O3 substrate or a flexible PCB. The assemblies were connected either directly to a temperature-controlled chuck on a probe station or through layers of materials with well-defined thermal resistance. A DC-mode LED was used to illuminate the SiPM, and the resulting SiPM current was measured to determine the steady-state temperature. This temperature depended on the power dissipated in the multiplication region of the SiPM and the thermal resistance. This information can be utilized to adjust the SiPMs working point, taking into account the effects of self-heating. Similarly, this approach can be applied to packaged SiPMs that have an unknown thermal contact to a heat sink.

Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) systems for e-health applications usually suffer of poor signal detection mainly due to a low end-to-end signal to noise ratio of the electronics chain. Lock-In Amplifiers (LIA) historically represent a powerful technique helping to improve performances in such circumstances. In this work it has been designed and implemented a digital LIA system, based on a Zynq® Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), trying to explore if this technique might improve fNIRS system performances. More broadly, FPGA based solution flexibility has been investigated, with particular emphasis applied to digital filter parameters, needed in the digital LIA, and it has been evaluated its impact on the final signal detection and noise rejection capability. The realized architecture was a mixed solution between VHDL hardware modules and software ones, running within a softcore microprocessor. Experimental results have shown the goodness of the proposed solutions and comparative details among different implementation will be detailed. Finally a key aspect taken into account throughout the design was its modularity, allowing an ease increase of the input channels while avoiding the growth of the design cost of the electronics system.
