Diversification in agroecosystems can increase the sustainability of agricultural production and reduce input dependence in agroecological transitions. This study evaluated the effects of intercropping and the introduction of flowering (aromatic) plant strips on the ratio of land use efficiency and crop damage for broccoli and lettuce association. Two experiments were conducted in 2022 and 2023 in experimental plots in southwestern Colombia. Crop association alone did not impact crop yield; the production was higher in the lettuce monoculture. However, in the presence of flowering plant strips, the land use equivalent ratio (LER) is >1 in the two years of study, with a high yield for broccoli. Regarding the damage by the silverback moth Plutella xilostella L on broccoli, no differences were found between crops established with or without flower strips. Similarly, flower strips did not affect the incidence of lettuce rot caused by Sclerotinia spp. In summary, our results support the idea that farmers can introduce flower strips into their horticultural fields to improve the eco-productive efficiency of their farms and reduce dependence on external polluting inputs. However, further research is needed to clarify the mechanisms underlying these results.

In the ongoing work, environmentally sound technologies for converting organic wastes into fertilizers, to improve soil sustainability and crop yield have been identified and assessed. Wet wastes were combined with 50% wood sawdust and 50% 50% wet wastes (Compost 1) or (10% Straw + 90% wet wastes) (Compost 2) to produce soil improvers with a balanced level of nutrients and their effectiveness on soil ecosystem functioning have been tested and compared to horse manure (HM) and nitrogen:phosphorous:potassium (NPK) fertilizers. Unfertilized soil was used as control. Soil chemical and biological properties, have been detected after the harvesting of broccoli and red cabbage (90 days from the initial treatments). Three independent experiments have been conducted in open field in a randomized complete block design with three replications (n=9). Results showed that Compost 1 had the highest C/N ratio and CSC, indicating a better humification of wet material. Compost 1 even if contained a minor amount of organic carbon, as well as a less activity of FDA and DHA than Compost 2, was the most effective in improving soil quality, significantly increasing the labile fraction of organic matter, the oxidative enzyme (DHA), microbial biomass and crop yield. Both composts increased crop productivity.

Brassica vegetables has demonstrated many health benefits over the years due to its composition of phenolic, flavonoid, and glucosinolate content. However, these bioactive molecules can be easily depleted during gastronomic operations. Therefore, a sustainable method which improves the phenolic content and antioxidant activity is required at large for the processors and consumers. Thermal processing has demonstrated as a method to improve the phenolic content and antioxidant status of Brassica vegetables. In the current study four different thermal processing methods, including freeze drying, sauteing, steam and air frying, were employed for five different Brassica vegetables, including kale, broccoli sprout, brussels sprout, red cabbage, and green cabbage. Total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activities were assessed using radical scavenging activity (DPPH and ABTS•+), reducing power (FRAP), and chelating ability of the metal ions. Among tested, air frying at 160oC for 10 minutes showed the highest TPC, TFC, and antioxidant activity of the Brassica vegetables, while sautéing showed the lowest. Steam treatment was preferred over the freeze-drying treatment. Within the vegetables tested, both kale and broccoli sprout contained higher antioxidants properties in most processing treatment employed. Results also indicated that there is a strong correlation between TPC, TFC, and the antioxidant activity (p<0.05). This study indicates that air frying could be a choice of sustainable thermal processing method for improving biomolecules for Brassica vegetables.
