Abstract
Problem solving is a universal, innate, unceasing activity in the living sphere, survival depends on it. The ensuing problematic areas of surviving, achieving ambitions, adapting to environments and troubleshooting are considered in this article. Problem solving is described as the mental processes involved in identifying a problem and specifying the details of its required resolution followed by the dynamic system and static structure as the means of implementation. The ‘subject-predicate’ form of natural language is about : ‘Something is said about the subject by the predicate’, or ‘The predicate describes what the subject is connected to’. The static and dynamic version of the latter is developed as the elementary constituent or ordered pair of structures and systems. Stories in natural language are used as the first step in identifying problematic areas which are transformed by linguistic modelling into reasoning schemes leading to representation of 1st and 2nd order cybernetic configurations by predicate logic conditionals. This forms an empirical, integrated theory of problem solving using systems thinking and processed, natural language as the symbolic basis. The method is applied to instances of product and safety engineering and introduces application of ChatGPT in the APPENDIX.
