| 1 | Because the terms “own-race” vs. “other-race” imply that infants understand race as marking ingroup versus outgroup distinctions, we are careful to limit its usage here. We instead use “familiar” versus “unfamiliar” racial groups to ensure we are not implying infants and toddlers necessarily categorize people as belonging, or not belonging, to their own social group. However, the perceptual discrimination literature provides substantial evidence that infants can track differences between racial groups that they are more versus less familiar with in their everyday environments. Therefore, we use familiar vs. unfamiliar racial groups in this study. |
