4. Sample Size Determination
- Using historical studies, fit the meta-analysis model and determine the design priors for the current study parameters.
- Sample values from and . A different value for is drawn if interest is in assurance and is fixed at particular value for power.
- For sample of size n*, simulate new study data based on RR* and p*.
- Analyze the data (with either non-informative priors or using the informative prior) and determine posterior probability .
- Repeat steps 2 – 4 a large number of times and calculate power (or assurance for random RR*) by computing the proportion of data sets where the null is rejected.
- Repeat steps 2 – 5 with different sample sizes to obtain desired power/probability of successful trial.
