Human osteosarcoma (OS) is a rare tumor predominantly affecting long bones and characterized by a poor prognosis. Currently, the first line of intervention consists of surgical resection of primary tumors combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, with a profound impact on patient’s life. Since surgical removal of OS frequently results in large resection of bones the use of biomaterials to sustain the stability of remaining tissue and to stimulate bone regeneration is challenging. Moreover, residual neoplastic cells might be responsible for tumor recurrence. Here we explored the potential of doped-bioactive glass as novel therapeutic intervention to both eradicate residual malignant cells and promote bone regeneration. Bioactive glass (BAG) has been extensively studied and employed in the field of regenerative medicine, due to its osseointegration properties and ability to improve bone tissue regeneration. We found that the incorporation of tellurium in BAG selectively kills OS cells through ferroptosis while preserving the viability of hBMSCs, and stimulating their osteodifferentiation. Although the mechanism of Te toxicity is still unclear: i) Te-BAG generates lipid-ROS through LOXs activity but not iron overload; ii) Te-dependent ferroptosis is mediated by GPX4 down-regulation, and iv) abrogates the anti-ferroptotic activity of FSP1, which expression confers resistance of OS to canonical induction of ferroptosis.

The Sanhetun tellurium-gold (Te-Au) deposit, located in the Duobaoshan polymetallic metallogenic belt (DPMB) within the eastern section of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), is a newly discovered small scale gold deposit. The mineralization, with resource of ≥ 4t Au, is mainly hosted in 3 NNE-trending alteration zones between granitic mylonite and volcanogenic-sedimentary formations. It’s the genesis and timing of formation of this deposit are poorly constrained. Here, we report the results of petrographic studies, TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyzer (TIMA), major and trace element concentrations, and in situ S isotope of pyrite and U-Pb ages of calcite. The results show that there are five species of telluride, including native tellurium, tetradymite, tsumoite, hessite and petzite and four types of pyrite, including coarse-grained euhedral Py1, fine-grained quartz-Py2 vein crosscutting Py1 and anhedral aggregated Py3 and Py4. The pre-ore Py1, containing negligible Au, Te and other trace elements, have a relatively narrow range of δ34S values ranging from -1.20 to -0.57‰. The Py2 have slightly high concentrations of Au and Te and distinctly high concentrations of Mo, Sb, Zn and Mn with markedly positive δ34S values of 4.67 to 14.43‰. The main ore stage Py3 contains high Au and Te concentrations and shows narrow δ34S values ranging from -5.69 to 0.19‰. The post-ore stage Py4 contains low Au concentrations with the δ34S values ranging from 2.66 to 3.86‰. Calcite from ore stage yield a U-Pb age of 135 ± 22 Ma, interpreted as the age of Te-Au mineralization. Our geochemical and geochronological data indicate that the Te was derived from partial melting of mantle metasomatized by the Te-rich fluids that originated from oceanic sediments. We correlate the tectonic setting with the subduction of Paleo Pacific plate in Early Cretaceous.

Tellurium exhibits exceptional intrinsic electronic properties. However, investigations into the modulation of tellurium's electronic properties through physical modification are notably scarce. Here, we present a comprehensive study focused on the evolution of the electronic properties of tellurium crystal flakes under plasma irradiation treatment by employing conductive atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The plasma-treated tellurium experienced a process of defect generation through lattice broken. Prior to the degradation of electronic transport performance due to plasma irradiation treatment, a remarkable observation emerged: in the low-energy region of hydrogen plasma-treated tellurium, a notable enhancement in conductivity was unexpectedly detected. The mechanism underlying this enhancement in electronic transport performance was thoroughly elucidated by comparing it with the electronic structure induced by argon plasma irradiation. This study not only fundamentally uncovers the effects of plasma irradiation on tellurium crystal flakes, but also unearths an unprecedented trend of enhanced electronic transport performance at low irradiation energies when utilizing hydrogen plasma. This abnormal trend bears significant implications for guiding the prospective application of tellurium-based 2D materials in the realm of electronic devices.

A polyphasic taxonomic study was carried out on the rod-shaped, orange pigmented strain C11T, isolated from gold mine tailings. Sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene showed relatedness to Brevundimonas, with 98.4 % and 98.2 % similarity to Brevundimonas bacteroides and Brevundimonas variabilis, respectively. Average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization with the closest phylogenetic neighbor of C11T indicates distinction at the species level, further confirmed by differences in physiology. C18:1 ω7c is the dominant cellular fatty acid. DNA G + C content is 68.3 mol %. The predominant ubiquinone is Q-10; 1,2-Di-O-acyl-3-O-α-D-glucopyranuronosyl glycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, 1,2-di-O-acyl-3-O-α-D-glucopyranosyl glycerol and 1,2-di-O-acyl-3-O-[D-glucopyranosyl-(1->4)-α-D-glucopyranuronosyl] glycerol are the major polar lipid constituents. This bacterium produces bacteriochlorophyll a and tolerates high concentrations of (μg/mL): tellurium (>1500), selenium (1000 to >5000), and vanadium (>5000) oxyanions. Data supports the inclusion of C11T into the genus Brevundimonas as a new species with the proposed name Brevundimonas aurifodinae sp. nov., (C11T = NRRL B-61758T; = DSM 118059T).
