The European corn borer (ECB) and in a lesser extent the western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) are a threat to maize in the Po Valley (Northern Italy), and its control can require insecticide applications. The results of a study to assess the effects of insecticide sprays on the beneficial insect Trichogramma brassicae (Hymenoptera Trichogrammatidae) and aphid predators are reported. A three-year research was carried out in two study areas, in Lombardy. In area 1, crop rotation was a common practice, while in area 2, maize monoculture was practiced. The ordinary trend of ECB egg masses attacked by T. brassicae was affected and parasitism rates were reduced as a result of exposure to insecticides (chlorpyriphos methyl, cypermethrin, alphacypermethrine, teflubenzuron). Repeated maize crop and insecticides spraying increased the aphid population abundance and negatively affected the aphid predator community, which mainly included ladybirds, hoverflies, bugs and lacewings. In sprayed fields, managed according to repeated crop protocols, the predator community was dominated by hoverflies, whereas ladybirds and Orius spp. prevailed in maize fields managed according to crop rotation protocols. Crop rotation protocols help to prevent ECB outbreaks; when threshold limit can be at risk, inundative release of T. brassicae or microbial control (i.e. use of preparation of Bacillus thuringiensis) can integrate natural biocontrol, a valuable alternative to chemical insecticides.

In our study, we assessed the effects of verbenone, the most widely studied bark beetle aggregation inhibitor, on saproxylic beetles of a Mediterranean pine forest in Tuscany. Verbenone pouches were devised in the laboratory and then applied to Ips sexdentatus pheromone traps so that catches could be compared to those of traps with just the bait. The trial was carried out in spring-summer 2023, collecting insect catches every two weeks. A total of 9440 beetles were collected, belonging to 32 different families and 57 species. About 80% of captures were bark beetles, mainly Orthotomicus erosus. Beetle predators accounted for about 17% of the captures, with a total of 12 species. Some of these predator species had never been studied yet in relation to verbenone effects, like other saproxylic beetles recorded in this study. A significant reduction of captures was recorded for some beetles (e.g. I. sexdentatus and O. erosus), for other species no differences emerged, and in some cases captures increased significantly when verbenone was present in the traps (i.e.. Hylurgus ligniperda, Corticeus pini, Aulonium ruficorne). The diversity of caught saproxylic beetles increased significantly in verbenone traps, highlighting possible implications of the use of verbenone when managing bark beetle outbreaks.

Outbreaks of the Nearctic leafhopper Erasmoneura vulnerata represent a recent issue for winegrowers in Southern Europe, in particular in North-eastern Italy. Problems are frequent in organic vineyards because insecticides labeled for organic viticulture show limited effectiveness towards leafhoppers. On the other hand, the response by naturally occurring predators and parasitoids to E. vulnerata populations in vineyards is often unable to keep leafhopper densities under levels that are acceptable for winegrowers. Here we evaluated the potential of two generalist predators, i.e., Chrysoperla carnea and Orius majusculus, in controlling E. vulnerata populations. Laboratory and semi-field experiments were carried out to evaluate both species' predation capacity on E. vulnerata nymphs. Then, predators were released in vineyards colonized by large E. vulnerata populations. Both predator species exhibited a remarkable voracity in the laboratory and significantly reduced leafhopper densities in semi-field experiments. Predator releases in vineyards reduced leafhopper densities by about 30%. Results obtained in laboratory, semi-field, and field experiments are discussed to implement these biocontrol agents' use in pest control tactics.
