Little is known about the association between equol and bioavailable testosterone (BT) in adults. We examined the associations of urinary equol concentrations with serum total, bioavailable and free testosterone (FT), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfide (DHEAS), free androgen index (FAI) and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) concentrations. This cross-sectional study included 1904 women aged 59.7 years. Urinary equol and serum sex hormone concentrations were measured. Overall, urinary equol tended to be inversely associated with bioactive forms of androgenic indices (BT, FT or FAI) but not with total testosterone (TT) or DHEAS. Urinary equol was also positively associated with SHBG. In multi-covariate-adjusted analyses stratified by menopausal status, graded and inverse associations between urinary equol and bioactive forms of androgenic indices (BT, FT and FAI) were observed in postmenopausal women (all p-trends <0.05), but not in premenopausal women. A significant positive association between urinary equol and SHBG was observed only in postmenopausal women. No significant associations were observed between urinary equol and TT or DHEAS in either group. A path analysis indicated that these associations of equol with androgens in postmenopausal women might be mediated by SHBG. Our findings indicated urinary equol exhibited graded and inverse associations with BT or FT but not TT in women.

With the development of social economy, the quality of national life has been rapidly improved, along with the accelerated aging of the population and the continued prevalence of metabolic risk factors. Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) have become a major disease burden for both urban and rural residents in China, and most of them are related to lifestyle changes in modern society, especially circadian rhythm disorders. Circadian rhythm regulating the activity of metabolism, such as carbohydrates, lipids, and other nutrients, is the most important pathway modulating the health. Nowadays, studies have shown that the interaction between circadian rhythmicity and gut microbiota counts for the homeostasis of metabolic health, while circadian rhythm disruption is associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis and metabolic diseases. However, there is a lack of research on the topic of gut microbiota mechanisms regulating circadian rhythm disruption leading to CMDs. With increased burden of CMDs prevention and treatment, as well as the demand of healthcare resource allocation, it prompts us to put forward a new strategy to solve this problem. This review focuses on the interactions between circadian rhythm and gut microbiota to elucidate the potential mechanisms of circadian rhythm disruption induced CMDs, providing a solid support for further prevention and treatment.

High-power laser facilities necessitate predicting incremental damage to final optics to identify evolving damage trends. In this study, we propose a surface damage detection method utilizing image segmentation employing ResNet-18, and a damage area estimation network employing U-Net++. Paired sets of online and offline images of optics obtained from a large laser facility is used to train the network. The trends of varying damage could be identified by incorporating additional experimental parameters. A key advantage of the proposed method is that the network can be trained end-to-end on small samples, eliminating the need for manual labeling or feature extraction. The software developed based on these models can facilitate the daily inspection and maintenance of optics in large laser facilities.
