Abstract
Platichthys stellatus is extensively farmed in Korea, and the importance of aquaculture technology is growing in economic and industrial sectors. However, pigmentation anomalies, such as discoloration of the skin during the farming process, have resulted in significant eco-nomic losses. Despite continuous studies to uncover the causes, genomic research in this area remains insufficient. This study utilizes RNA-seq de novo assembly analysis to establish candi-date genes in brain tissue related to pigmentation variation in P. stellatus. Genes associated with albinism and melanism were identified, with 1,053 genes linked to albinism and 642 genes asso-ciated with melanism. Additionally, functional analysis of these genes was conducted through gene ontology (GO) analysis, categorizing genes by biological process, cellular component, and molecular function. KEGG pathway analysis revealed significant associations with five path-ways for albinism and two pathways for melanism in brain tissue. The large-scale gene expres-sion profiles identified in this study provide valuable genomic resources for future studies on aquaculture species, including P. stellatus.
