The energy efficient problem of parallel-connected pumps in heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems has received an increasing attention in recent years. While many pump optimization methods are proposed and show great performance, pumps are not always energy efficient and lack flexibility. In this paper, we propose a distributed control algorithm for parallel pumps in HVAC system in a peer-to-peer setting. Based on a spanning tree of the network of the intelligent nodes and a population of potential solutions randomly sampled, the algorithm makes optimal control decision for pumps to minimize energy consumption and meet the system demand. The theoretical analysis on convergence of the algorithm is established. Unlike traditional control structure, the whole system is fully distributed and each pump is controlled by an intelligent node that runs identical control code and coordinates with other nodes through direct data exchange. Simulation experiments on 6 parallel-connected pumps are provided for different working cases to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and compare with other four methods. The results show that our method strictly satisfies the demand constraint and presents a good energy saving potential, the convergence guarantee, the flexibility. The maximum energy saving can be up to 29.92%. Besides, the hardware test clearly presents that our method can perform on low-cost Raspberry Pi3 and reduce system cost.

This paper proposes an ARIMA approach to battery health forecasting with accuracy improvement by K shape-based clustered predictors. The health prediction of the battery pack is an important function of a battery management system in data centers. Accurate forecasting of battery life turns out to be very difficult without failure data to train a good forecasting model in real life. The conventional ARIMA model is compared with total and clustered predictors for battery health forecasting. Results show that the forecasting accuracy of the ARIMA model significantly improved by utilizing the results of the clustered predictors for 40 batteries in a real data center. One year of actual historical data of 40 batteries of large scale datacenter is presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Buildings are responsible for approximately 40% of the world’s energy consumption and 36% of the total carbon dioxide emissions. Building occupancy is essential, enabling Occupant-Centric Control for zero emissions and decarbonization. Although existing machine learning and deep learning methods for building occupancy prediction have achieved remarked progress, their analyses remain limited when applied to complex real-world scenarios. Besides, there is a high expectation for Transformer algorithms to predict building occupancy accurately. Therefore, this paper presents an Occupancy Prediction Transformer network (OPTnet). We fuse and feed multi-sensor data (building occupancy, indoor environmental conditions, HVAC operations) into a Transformer model to forecast the future occupancy presence in multiple zones. We perform experimental analysis and compare it to different occupancy prediction methods (e.g., Decision Tree, Long Short-Term Memory networks, Multi-layer perceptron) and diverse time horizons (1,2,3,5,10,20,30mins). The performance metrics (e.g., Accuracy and Mean Squared Error) are employed to evaluate the effectiveness of prediction algorithms. Our OPTnet method achieves superior performance on our experimental two-week data compared to existing methods. The improved performance signifies its potential to enhance HVAC control systems and energy optimization strategies.
