Abstract
Large language models can retrieve studies, synthesize evidence and support clinical decisions. This Review examines six overlapping domains and the evidence for their use. Improvements in individual tasks do not establish reliable syntheses or patient benefit. Across retrieval, synthesis, updating and clinical evaluation, the central challenge is to preserve source support, methodological judgment and patient context while testing whether the resulting workflow improves care.
