Abstract
A recent debate regarding the Carbohydrate-Insulin Model (CIM) and the Mass Balance Model (MBM) has raised a fundamental question: Does measuring mass rather than energy explain the pathogenesis of obesity, or does it merely quantify the excess? Gary Taubes has argued that whether we measure mass or energy, we are simply measuring a quantity, and this tells us nothing about how the system works. This commentary demonstrates that this argument rests on a fundamental category error. Mass and energy are not interchangeable currencies; energy is a scalar property of mass. The pathogenesis of obesity is a physical process – the trafficking of carbon atoms. By examining Taubes’s own analogy of a car’s fuel gauge, I show that mass accounting is not merely a quantification; it is the direct observation of the metabolic engine. The MBM does not replace the CIM’s focus on insulin; it supplies the physical language required to prove it.
