Abstract
Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) present significant challenges that are gradually being addressed by the research community. Vehicle-to-vehicle communication is one area requiring improvement, particularly regarding link connectivity between vehicles. Routing protocols used in these networks can be significantly enhanced through the application of artificial intelligence techniques, such as fuzzy logic controllers. The three types of fuzzy controllers address measurement uncertainty with increasing sophistication, ranging from the simplest (Type-1) to the most advanced (Type-3). VANETs are characterized by mobility patterns that introduce considerable uncertainty in various aspects, such as route lifetime. This article presents three fuzzy decision systems (one of each type) sharing the same rules and input parameters. The objective is to determine whether the complexity of these networks justifies the use of more complex systems. Simulation results show that the system based on Type-3 controllers yields the best performance, confirming their potential to improve routing in VANETs.
