Digital Storytelling as a 21st Century Pedagogical Strategy

Abstract
Digital storytelling is an emerging pedagogical strategy whereby the traditional art of storytelling is merged with modern technologies and multimedia, where learners construct narratives through combinations of storylines, images, sound, audio, video, animation, music, and texts. As modern education systems emphasize such skills as creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, digital literacy, and learner autonomy, there are plenty of opportunities for integration of these skills within digital storytelling. This paper explores digital storytelling as a pedagogical strategy of the 21st century and discusses its theoretical background, features, educational application, advantages, and difficulties of implementation. The analysis shows that digital storytelling can be a very helpful tool for active, collaborative, experiential, and student-centered learning. It also considers the importance of digital storytelling for the development of multiliteracy and multimodality, as well as its applicability in the context of contemporary teacher education and technologically enhanced learning environment. The paper concludes that digital storytelling should not be considered just a technological exercise, but a pedagogical strategy where learners construct knowledge and communication skills, reflect their experiences, and critically evaluate digital media.

1. Introduction

There is a major change taking place in the field of education within the 21st century due to the influence of digital technologies in the creation, delivery, access, and dissemination of knowledge. Learners in the contemporary environment come into contact with information through multimodal learning environments consisting of text, imagery, sound, video, animation, social networking sites, and interactive media. Therefore, pedagogies, which largely depend on the teacher explaining information through textbooks, have been supplemented with other pedagogies, where the learners are engaged with creating, communicating, collaborating, and critically engaging with information (Redecker, 2017).There has been a lot of focus on the skills such as creativity, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, digital literacy, problem-solving, and self-directed learning during the process of creating 21st-century education (Partnership for 21st Century Learning [P21], 2019). In order to develop these skills, there is a need for pedagogies where the learners construct knowledge and not just learn information. This is where digital storytelling becomes relevant.
Typically, digital storytelling refers to the production of brief multimedia stories with photos, illustrations, and recordings of voiceovers, music, video fragments, text materials, and other digital media. Despite the fact that storytelling as such is a rather old tradition of sharing knowledge and experience, digital technology made it possible to make stories in many more ways than before (Robin, 2008). It has become the object of research in school and university education, teacher training, language learning, literacy education, professional development, and community-based learning. Digital storytelling gives learners the possibility to do research on some topic, organize material, construct a story, create digital content, and present their ideas to the audience. Hence, it includes several steps of thinking and communicating. The significance of digital storytelling for education lies not only in the process of producing digital video but in the process itself which can make learners connect academic knowledge with personal experience, cultural background, social problems, and real life situations. This can facilitate meaningful and contextual learning (Sadik, 2008).

2. Concept of Digital Storytelling

It is possible to describe digital storytelling as the process of creating a story through the use of digital technologies. It implies the integration of the traditional format of storytelling with the use of various multimedia components, including photographs, illustrations, narration, music, sound effects, video and text. According to Robin (2008), digital storytelling is defined as the use of technology-supported storytelling technique, which enables people to create stories, by using images, text, recorded audio narration, music, and video. In other words, digital storytelling is the convergence of traditional storytelling techniques and modern digital media. Most digital stories are short and based on specific topics, experiences, events, concepts or issues. However, what is important about the process of creation of digital stories is not the use of complicated technologies but the research, planning, scripting, designing, creation, revising, and presenting of the story.
Thus, digital storytelling may be viewed through the prism of three interrelated dimensions: Narrative dimension - creation of a meaningful story; Technological dimension – application of digital technologies and multimedia; Pedagogical dimension - utilization of storytelling for learning and knowledge creation. This combination distinguishes digital storytelling from mere presentation of videos or slideshows in a classroom.

3. Theoretical Background

3.1. Constructivist Theory

One of the best theoretical bases for digital storytelling is constructivist theory. From the constructivist perspective, knowledge is constructed through experience, interaction, reflection, and interpretation and not acquired passively (Piaget, 1972).
In digital storytelling, the learner constructs knowledge by choosing relevant information, creating narratives, and integrating the new information with their previous experiences. It is not a matter of consuming digital information but becoming producers of knowledge.
By making a digital story, the learner determines the important information, connections between various pieces of information, and how to communicate the story. This process is aligned with constructivist principles.

3.2. Social Constructivism

Social constructivist theory by Vygotsky (1978) highlights the significance of social interactions and cultural setting in learning. Learning takes place through social interactions with teachers, fellow students, and the social setting at large. Digital storytelling may create a platform for collaborative learning through working together in the areas of topic research, scripting, selection of multimedia content, narration recording, and editing of the story. As such, the role of the teacher changes from being the only source of knowledge to a facilitator and collaborator.

3.3. Experiential Learning Theory

Kolb’s (1984) experiential learning theory focuses on the processes of learning by means of experience, reflection, conceptualization, and experimentation. The activity of digital storytelling allows creating a meaningful learning cycle that involves experiences. The process of digital storytelling begins with a personal or educational experience, its reflection, linking to theoretical knowledge, creating a digital story, and sharing it with other people. As a result, an experience becomes a source of learning. Thus, digital storytelling becomes especially relevant for reflective tasks, field experience, internship, community studies, and teacher education.

3.4. Multiliteracies Theory

The idea of multiliteracies states that literacy in the modern world goes beyond reading and writing of conventional texts. In today’s world, people need to be able to decode and construct meanings using multiple modalities, such as visual, auditory, linguistic, spatial, and digital modes (New London Group, 1996). The creation of digital storytelling directly promotes multiliteracy because a learner needs to use multiple modes of communication at once. They should know how images, words, sounds, music, and voiceover interact to create a message. Thus, digital storytelling contributes to developing modern literacy.

4. Digital Storytelling and 21st Century Competences

The ability of digital storytelling to nurture several competences in the 21st century is one of its main advantages.

4.1. Creativity

Students can convert their ideas into unique stories by means of pictures, narration, music, videos, and design elements. This activity stimulates creativity and innovation (Robin, 2008).

4.2. Critical Thinking

The ability to evaluate information, select appropriate resources, distinguish between reliable and unreliable information, and determine how evidence will be incorporated in the story is essential for students.

4.3. Communication

Creating a digital story implies that learners need to communicate ideas to their target audience. In this way, they practice communication in an authentic situation.

4.4. Collaboration

Digital storytelling can include research, writing, recording, editing, peer review, and presenting as a team activity. These processes enhance collaboration and communication skills.

4.5. Digital Literacy

It means that students gain skills in searching for information, evaluating digital sources, developing multimedia projects, managing digital objects, and communicating digitally.

4.6. Problem-Solving

Learners face technical and narrative problems when producing their digital story. They should be able to identify and solve problems collaboratively. All these competences are closely linked to the goals of the 21st century education (P21,

5. Digital Storytelling as a Learner-Centred Pedagogy

Digital storytelling contributes to learner-centred learning, since students play an active role in deciding the content, structure, presentation, and meaning of what they learn. Learning in traditional setting often places students in the position of information receivers. Digital storytelling reverses this situation, making students into authors, designers, researchers, and storytellers. According to Sadik (2008), digital storytelling has the potential to enhance classroom activities, since it allows students to construct and communicate knowledge. In turn, storytelling can offer learners an opportunity to express themselves and link classroom knowledge to their experience. The teacher becomes an indispensable part of the process, though he or she does not take the same role. Teachers act as facilitators, helping students in research, writing of stories, digital ethics, copyright, technologies, and assessment.

6. Digital Storytelling for Language Learning

There is a lot of promise in using digital storytelling for language instruction. Language learners require time to build reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, pronunciation, and communication skills. In order to create a digital story, learners have to write a script, revise sentences, use the right vocabulary, practice narration, listen to their recordings, and communicate effectively. For English language learning, digital storytelling could be done on topics like:
  • Personal storytelling
  • Biographical storytelling
  • Descriptive writing
  • Story retelling
  • Book review
  • Historical storytelling
  • Cultural storytelling
  • News storytelling
  • Poetic storytelling
  • Social issues
  • Vocabulary learning
  • Speaking and pronunciation practice
Digital storytelling can help language learners in many ways (Kajder, 2004).

7. Digital Storytelling in Teacher Education

Educational institutions preparing future teachers can employ digital storytelling to prepare prospective teachers for technology-enabled classes. Pre-service teachers can develop digital stories based on theories of education, personal teaching experiences, school observations, childhood experiences, professional identity, or classroom difficulties. For instance, future teachers can create a digital story by the name “My Path as a Future Teacher” and make reflections on their ideas, experiences, problems, and professional goals.
Thus, digital storytelling may facilitate reflective practice. Reflective practice is especially significant in teacher education since future teachers require the opportunity to critically evaluate their assumptions, experiences, teaching decisions, and professional growth (Schön, 1983).Moreover, digital storytelling can be used by teacher educators to evaluate not only students’ subject knowledge but also their communication, reflection, creation, collaboration, and digital technology skills.

8. Digital Storytelling in an Era of Generative AI

The advent of generative AI technology presents both opportunities and threats to digital storytelling. The use of AI can help students generate ideas, create outlines, enhance language, produce images, make subtitles, and facilitate multimedia creation. But too much reliance on AI could limit learner autonomy and creativity. When AI creates the entire story, then the students become mere recipients of machine-made products rather than storytellers and critics of the products. This is why AI-assisted digital storytelling must put value on human authorship, criticism, transparency, ethics, and reflective practice. The UNESCO (2023) highlights the significance of human-oriented practices, ethical perspectives, and necessary competencies in using generative AI in education.

9. Steps in Implementing Digital Storytelling

AI must support the process of storytelling, not substitute for the storyteller. A digital storytelling process can be conducted systematically through a number of interconnected stages. First, students choose a topic which has personal relevance to them and is academically relevant. Then, they conduct the research on the chosen topic using appropriate sources of information. In the third stage, students prepare the story and find out the main idea behind it, organize their thoughts and construct the storyline. They also prepare the narration and rewrite the script until it becomes clear, coherent and appropriate for the target audience. Students then gather multimedia material which is associated with the narration, including pictures, drawings, sound recordings, movies, music tracks and other digital content. Students create the digital story using digital technology which incorporates the narration and the appropriate multimedia material. At this stage, students can share their story drafts with fellow students for peer reviews to get feedback about their story content and its technical performance. The last set of stories is then presented to the rest of the class or even more people via classroom presentation or even using online digital means. In the end, reflection on what the students have learned, what problems they faced, what skills they acquired, and the whole process of digital storytelling helps them better understand the issue. In this way, a digital storytelling process becomes not just a technological one but a learning one.

10. Digital Storytelling and NEP 2020

There is significant promise for digital storytelling concerning the educational philosophy of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This policy advocates for experiential learning, critical thinking skills, creative processes, the integration of technology, multilingualism, vocational skills, and holistic development (Ministry of Education, 2020). Digital storytelling can aid in achieving all these aims through the ability to enable students to relate the curriculum content to personal experience, local culture, language, knowledge of community, and the digital world today. Moreover, digital storytelling can serve the goal of multilingualism in education. Here, students can craft stories using their native language, local language, Urdu, Hindi, English, and even a mixture of all languages.

11. Conclusion

Digital storytelling is a significant pedagogical tool for the 21st century since it integrates storytelling, technology, creativity, communication, collaboration, reflection, and knowledge construction. The importance of digital storytelling in pedagogy does not lie in the use of digital tools but in the creation of environments in which learners act as creators and communicators of knowledge. Digital storytelling is grounded in constructivist, social constructivist, experiential, multiliteracies, and multimedia learning theories, thus giving learners opportunities to relate academic knowledge to personal, cultural, and social experiences. Digital storytelling can simultaneously foster creativity, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and digital literacy. Teacher education is one sphere in which digital storytelling is particularly valuable for its ability to give future teachers the experience of using technology not just as a consumer but as a pedagogue. However, successful implementation of digital storytelling requires teacher preparation, access to technology, assessment, digital ethics, and instructional design.
With the advent of the new era of generative artificial intelligence technologies, digital storytelling may prove even more useful if technology is used as a facilitator rather than a substitute for human creativity. Overall, digital storytelling can help shift education from being passive to becoming creative, reflective, collaborative, multimodal, and learner-centred, which In conclusion, digital storytelling can help in making the move from passive learning to creative and reflective, collaborative, multimodal, and learner-centered learning, which is why it is very pertinent for the needs of the 21st-century pedagogy.
