Background and Objective: Diabetes Mellitus is a long-term, multifaceted metabolic condition that necessitates ongoing medical management. Hypogonadism is a syndrome that is a clinical and/or biochemical indicator of testosterone deficiency. Cross-sectional studies have reported that 20-80.4 % of all men with Type 2 diabetes have hypogonadism, and Type 2 diabetes is related with low testosterone. This study presents an analysis of the use of ML and EL classifiers in predicting testosterone deficiency. In our study, we compared optimized traditional ML classifiers and three EL classifiers using grid search and stratified k-fold cross-validation. We used the SMOTE method for the class imbalance problem. Methods: This database contains 3397 patients for the assessment of testosterone deficiency. Among these patients, 1886 patients with type 2 diabetes were included in the study. In the data pre-processing stage, firstly outlier/excessive observation analyses were performed LOF and missing value analyses were performed with random forest. The SMOTE is a method for generating synthetic samples of the minority class. Four basic classifiers, namely MLP, RF, ELM and LR, were used as first level classifiers. Tree ensemble classifiers, namely ADA, AGBoost, and SGB, were used as second level classifiers. Results: After SMOTE, while the diagnostic accuracy decreased in all base classifiers except ELM, sensitivity values increased in all classifiers. Similarly, while the specificity values decreased in all classifiers, F1 score increased. The RF classifier gave more successful results on the base-training dataset. The most successful ensemble classifier in the training dataset was the ADA classifier in the original data and in the after SMOTE data. The testing data, XGBoost is the most suitable model for your intended use in evaluating model performance. XGBoost, which exhibits a balanced performance especially when SMOTE is used, can be preferred to correct class imbalance. Conclusions: SMOTE is used to correct the class imbalance in the original data. However, as seen in this study, when SMOTE was applied, the diagnostic accuracy decreased in some models, but the sensitivity increased significantly. This shows the positive effects of SMOTE to better predict the minority class.

Supervised machine learning (SML) is a powerful method for predicting a small number of well-defined output groups (e.g., potential buyers of a certain product) by taking as input a large number of known well-defined measurements (e.g., past purchases, income, ethnicity, gender, credit record, age, favorite color, favorite chewing gum). SML is predicated upon the existence of a training dataset in which the correspondence between the input and output is known to be true. SML has had enormous success in the world of commerce, and this success may have prompted a few scientists to employ it in the study of molecular and genome evolution. Here, we list the properties of SML that make it an unsuitable tool in certain evolutionary studies. In particular, we argue that SML cannot be used in an evolutionary exploratory context for the simple reason that training datasets that are known to be a priori true do not exist. As a case study, we use an SML study in which it was concluded that most human genomes evolve by positive selection through soft selective sweeps (Schrider and Kern 2017). We show that in the absence of legitimate training datasets, Schrider and Kern (2017) used (1) simulations that employ many manipulatable variables and (2) a system of cherry-picking data that would put to shame most modern evangelical exegeses of the Bible. These two factors, in addition to the lack of methodological detail and negative controls, lead us to conclude that all evolutionary inferences derived from so-called SML algorithms (e.g., S-HIC) should be taken with a huge shovel of salt.

A key component for the proper functioning, availability, and reliability of power grids is the power trans- former. Although these are very reliable assets, the early detection of incipient degradation mechanisms are very important to prevent failures that may shorten their lifetime. In this work a review and comparative analysis, of classical Machine Learning algorithms (such as single and ensemble classification algorithms) and two automatic machine learning classifiers, are presented for the fault diagnosis of power transformers. The goal is to determine whether fully automated ML approaches are worse or better than traditional ML frameworks that require a human in the loop (such as a data scientist) to identify transformer faults from oil-dissolved gases data. The methodology uses a DB compiled from published and proprietary transformer fault samples. Faults data is obtained from the literature, the Duval pentagon method, and user-expert knowledge. The parameters from, either single or ensemble classifiers, were optimized through standard machine learning procedures. The results showed that the best performing algorithm is a robust automatic machine learning classifiers model followed by classical algorithms such as neural networks and stacking ensembles. These results highlight the ability of a robust automatic machine learning model for, handling imbalanced power transformers faults datasets with high accuracy, using the minimum tuning effort by the electrical experts. By providing the most probable transformer fault condition will reduce the time required to find and solve the fault.

This paper describes and demonstrates an autonomous robotic team that can rapidly learn the characteristics of environments that it has never seen before. The flexible paradigm is easily scalable to multi-robot, multi-sensor autonomous teams, and is relevant to satellite calibration/validation and the creation of new remote sensing data products. A case study is described for the rapid characterisation of the aquatic environment, over a period of just a few minutes we acquired thousands of training data points. This training data allowed our machine learning algorithms to rapidly learn by example and provide wide area maps of the composition of the environment. Along side these larger autonomous robots two smaller robots that can be deployed by a single individual were also deployed (a walking robot and a robotic hover-board), observing significant small scale spatial variability.

The potential of generalized machine learning models developed for crop water estimation was examined in the current study. Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), and Random Forest (RF) are three ensembled machine learning models that were developed using all of the data from a single location from 1976 to 2017 and then immediately applied at eleven different locations without the need for any local calibration. For the test period of January 2018 to June 2020, the model's capacity to estimate the numerical values of crop water requirement (Pen-man-Monteith (PM) ETo values) was assessed. In comparison to the GBM and RF models, the XGBoost model outperformed them both marginally and significantly. The estimate's weighted standard error was smaller than 0.85 mm/day, and the model's effectiveness varied from 96% to 99% across various locations. The model's strong performance was indicated by the decreased noise-to-signal ratio. A real-time water management system at the regional level can be seamlessly linked with this type of model due to its accuracy in estimating crop water requirements and its capacity to generalize.

In this brief letter we report our initial results on the application of deep-learning to the massive MIMO channel estimation challenge. We show that it is possible to estimate wireless channels and that the possibility of mitigating pilot-contamination with deep-learning is possible given that the leaning model underwent an extensive training-phase and that it has been presented with a large number of different channel conditions.

Machine learning (ML) is a subdivision of artificial intelligence in which the machine learns from machine-readable data and information. It uses data, learns the pattern and predicts the new outcomes. Its popularity is growing because it helps to understand the trend and provides a solution that can be either a model or a product. Applications of ML algorithms have increased drastically in G.I.S. and remote sensing in recent years. It has a broad range of applications, from developing energy-based models to assessing soil liquefaction to creating a relation between air quality and mortality. Here, in this paper, we discuss the most popular supervised ML models (classification and regression) in G.I.S. and remote sensing. The motivation for writing this paper is that ML models produce higher accuracy than traditional parametric classifiers, especially for complex data with many predictor variables. This paper provides a general overview of some popular supervised non-parametric ML models that can be used in most of the G.I.S. and remote sensing-based projects. We discuss classification (Naïve Bayes (NB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), Decision Trees (DT)) and regression models (Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Linear and Non-Linear) here. Therefore, the article can be a guide to those interested in using ML models in their G.I.S. and remote sensing-based projects

The rapid industrial growth in solar energy is gaining increasing interest in renewable power from smart grids and plants. Anomaly detection in photovoltaic (PV) systems is a demanding task. In this sense, it is vital to utilize recent advances in machine learning to accurately and timely detect different anomalies and condition monitoring. This paper addresses this issue by evaluating different machine learning techniques and schemes and showing how to apply these approaches to solve anomaly detection and detect faults on photovoltaic components. For this, we apply distinct state-of-the-art machine learning techniques (AutoEncoder Long Short-Term Memory (AE-LSTM), Facebook-Prophet, and Isolation Forest) to detect faults/anomalies and evaluate their performance. These models shall identify the PV system's healthy and abnormal actual behaviors. Our results provide clear insights to make an informed decision, especially with experimental trade-offs for such complex solution space.

Which machine-learning model is the best at winning the prisoner’s dilemma? Which models create the best cumulative outcomes? Is there a model that perfectly captures both winning and cumulative points? These are questions generated from a simple 2 x 2 payoff matrix of the prisoner’s dilemma. Imagine you and your partner in crime are caught and sent independently into questioning. You can either collaborate or defect, but you don’t know what your partner will do. If you both collaborate, cumulatively, you’ll each get one year in jail. If you defect and your partner collaborates, you’ll serve no time and they will serve 10 years, and vice versa. If you both defect, you’ll both serve 5 years in jail. Placing AIs against each other to play just one round doesn’t reveal much about their code, strategy, and end goal. So the Reinforcement Learning, Pattern Learning, Tit For Tat, and other models were put up against each other in a 100 round game where their behavior, convergence, and learning were analyzed to reveal the most effective ways strategies to beat the prisoner’s dilemma. Different machine learning models (multiple linear regression, vector support machines, artificial neural networks and random forests) are applied to predict the monthly global irradiation (MGI) from different input variables (latitude, longitude and altitude of meteorological station, month, average temperatures, among others) of different areas of Galicia (Spain). The models were trained, validated and queried using data from three stations, and each best machine model was checked in two independent stations. The results obtained confirmed that the best ML methodology is the ANN model which presents the lowest RMSE value in the validation and querying phases 122.6·10kJ/(m2∙day) and 113.6·10kJ/(m2∙day), respectively, and predict conveniently for independent stations, 201.3·10kJ/(m2∙day) and 209.4·10kJ/(m2∙day), respectively. Given the good results obtained, it is convenient to continue with the design of artificial neural networks applied to the analysis of monthly global irradiation.

Fault detection in transmission lines plays a role in maintaining the dependability and steadiness of power networks. Traditional methods for identifying faults often struggle to handle the diverse nature of real world fault situations. Machine learning (ML) algorithms offer a data centered approach that can adjust and learn from datasets potentially overcoming the limitations of traditional approaches. This document presents a review of progress in using ML for detecting faults in transmission lines. By drawing insights from a variety of studies we explore how ML algorithms have evolved in fault detection, including techniques like networks, recurrent neural networks featuring Long Short Term Memory and convolutional neural networks. We delve into the spectrum of applications where ML is used for fault detection across fault scenarios and operational settings. Additionally we discuss the obstacles and prospects linked to putting ML based fault detection systems into practice such as challenges with data quality, model interpretability and integration with existing grid monitoring systems. Lastly we outline future research paths focused on pushing forward the boundaries of fault detection, in power transmission systems through approaches and collaborative endeavors involving academia, industry players and policymakers. In general, this review highlights how machine learning has the power to revolutionize fault detection methods enhancing the resilience and dependability of power systems.

This paper presents a system based on pedestrian dead reckoning for localization of networked mobile users, which relies only on sensors embedded in the devices and device- to-device connectivity. The user trajectory is reconstructed by measuring step by step the user displacements. Though step length can be estimated rather accurately, heading evaluation is extremely problematic in indoor environments. Magnetometer is typically used, however measurements are strongly perturbed. To improve the location accuracy, this paper proposes a cooperative system to estimate the direction of motion based on a machine learning approach for perturbation detection and filtering, combined with a consensus algorithm for performance augmentation by cooperative data fusion at multiple device. A first algorithm filters out perturbed magnetometer measurements based on a-priori information on the Earth's magnetic field. A second algorithm aggregates groups of users walking in the same direction, while a third one combines the measurements of the aggregated users in a distributed way to extract a more accurate heading estimate. Extensive indoor experiments show that the heading error is highly reduced by the proposed approach thus leading to noticeable enhancements in localization performance.

Background: Three-dimensional gait analysis plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation assessment of post-stroke hemiplegic patients. However, the data generated from such analysis is often complex and difficult to interpret in clinical practice, requiring extensive time and complicated procedures. The Gait Deviation Index (GDI) serves as a simplified metric for quantifying the severity of pathological gait. Although isokinetic dynamometry is widely employed in muscle function assessment and rehabilitation, its application in gait analysis remains underexplored. Objective: This study aims to investigate the use of isokinetic muscle strength data obtained from the Biodex system, combined with machine learning techniques, to predict the GDI in hemiplegic patients. Methods: A cohort of 150 post-stroke hemiplegic patients was evaluated. The peak torque, peak torque/body weight, maximum work of repeated actions, coefficient of variation, average power, total work, acceleration time, deceleration time, range of motion, and average peak torque for both flexor and extensor muscles on the affected side were measured at three angular velocities (60°/s, 90°/s, and 120°/s) using the Biodex System 4 Pro. GDI was calculated using data from a Vicon three-dimensional motion capture system. The study employed four machine learning models—Lasso regression, random forest (RF), support vector regression (SVR), and BP neural networks—to model and validate the data. Model performance was evaluated using mean squared error (MSE), the coefficient of determination (R²), and mean absolute error (MAE). SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis was used to enhance model interpretability. Results: The RF model outperformed others in predicting GDI, with an MSE of 16.18, an R² of 0.89, and an MAE of 2.99. In contrast, the Lasso regression model yielded an MSE of 22.29, an R² of 0.85, and an MAE of 3.71. The SVR model had an MSE of 31.58, an R² of 0.82, and an MAE of 7.68, while the BP neural network exhibited the poorest performance with an MSE of 50.38, an R² of 0.79, and an MAE of 9.59. SHAP analysis identified the maximum work of repeated actions of the extensor muscles at 60°/s and 120°/s as the most critical features for predicting GDI, underscoring the importance of muscle strength metrics at varying speeds in rehabilitation assessments. Conclusion: This study highlights the potential of machine learning techniques in analyzing complex clinical data. The developed GDI prediction model, based on isokinetic dynamometry data, offers a novel, streamlined, and effective tool for assessing rehabilitation progress in post-stroke hemiplegic patients, with promising implications for broader clinical application.

Tremendous progress has been witnessed in artificial intelligence within the domain of neural network backed deep learning systems and its applications. As we approach the post Moore’s Law era, the limit of semiconductor fabrication technology along with a rapid increase in data generation rates have lead to an impending growing challenge of tackling newer and more modern machine learning problems. In parallel, quantum computing has exhibited rapid development in recent years. Due to the potential of a quantum speedup, quantum based learning applications have become an area of significant interest, in hopes that we can leverage quantum systems to solve classical problems. In this work, we propose a quantum deep learning architecture; we demonstrate our quantum neural network architecture on tasks ranging from binary and multi-class classification to generative modelling. Powered by a modified quantum differentiation function along with a hybrid quantum-classic design, our architecture encodes the data with a reduced number of qubits and generates a quantum circuit, loading it onto a quantum platform where the model learns the optimal states iteratively. We conduct intensive experiments on both the local computing environment and IBM-Q quantum platform. The evaluation results demonstrate that our architecture is able to outperform Tensorflow-Quantum by up to 12.51% and 11.71% for a comparable classic deep neural network on the task of classification trained with the same network settings. Furthermore, our GAN architecture runs the discriminator and the generator purely on quantum hardware and utilizes the swap test on qubits to calculate the values of loss functions. In comparing our quantum GAN, we note our architecture is able to achieve similar performance with 98.5% reduction on the parameter set when compared to classical GANs. With the same number of parameters, additionally, QuGAN outperforms other quantum based GANs in the literature for up to 125.0% in terms of similarity between generated distributions and original data sets.

Abstract: The main contribution of this paper is to introduce a new iterative training algorithm for restricted Boltzmann machines. The proposed learning path is inspired from online sequential extreme learning machine one of extreme learning machine variants which deals with time accumulated sequences of data with fixed or varied sizes. Recursive least squares rules are integrated for weights adaptation to avoid learning rate tuning and local minimum issues. The proposed approach is compared to one of the well known training algorithms for Boltzmann machines named “contrastive divergence”, in term of time, accuracy and algorithmic complexity under the same conditions. Results strongly encourage the new given rules during data reconstruction.

With the evolution of computing technology in many application like human robot interaction, human computer interaction and health-care system, 3D human body models and their dynamic motions has gained popularity. Human performance accompanies human body shapes and their relative motions. Research on human activity recognition is structured around how the complex movement of a human body is identified and analyzed. Vision based action recognition from video is such kind of tasks where actions are inferred by observing the complete set of action sequence performed by human. Many techniques have been revised over the recent decades in order to develop a robust as well as effective framework for action recognition. In this survey, we summarize recent advances in human action recognition, namely the machine learning approach, deep learning approach and evaluation of these approaches.

Despite ongoing efforts, the relationship between groin strength and injury remains unclear. The challenge of accurately predicting injuries presents an opportunity for researchers to develop pre-vention strategies to reduce the occurrence of such injuries. Consequently, this issue requires further investigation to obtain insights into effective mitigation strategies. In 120 male soccer players the maximum isometric strength of the hip muscle groups was measured, and the strength ratios were calculated. Previous injury and anthropometric data were registered. Injury data were collected following the FIFA/UEFA consensus. The K- Nearest Neighbour (k-NN), was used to predict the incidence of injury, while the significant predictive variables of the k-NN algorithm were fitted into a multivariate logistic regression model (LR) to analyze the likelihood of players sustaining a groin injury. The LR model determined two variables as significant predictors of groin injury. Players were less likely to sustain a groin injury by 76% for each decrease of the Adductors/Abductors isometric strength ratio in the non-dominant limb (OR = 0.238, CI 95%= [(0.098-0.572]). Players with a history of previous injury had a 67% greater risk of sustaining an injury (OR = 0.333, CI 95%= [(0.1068-1.038]). Isometric hip adductor and abductor strength im-balances of the non-dominant lower limb and a history of previous injury were risk factors for groin injury in soccer players.

The aim of this article is to discuss the transformative amalgamation of Internet of Things and Machine Learning technologies within the domain of vegetable hydroponic systems for nutrition management. Hydroponics, being an efficient cultivation method, benefits a great deal from the precision and adaptability that machine learning algorithms can offer, along with the real-time monitoring facilitated by the devices using the Internet of Things. This study summarizes the latest research and underlines how ML and IoT may work together, focusing on nutrient optimization, plant development, and resource efficiency. The use of ML algorithms, the function of IoT devices for real-time monitoring, communication protocols, scalability issues, and implementation are among some of the key subjects of the discussion. The research indicates benefits to crop output, efficiency in using resources, and sustainability based on the case studies and the analysis of results. However, ethical problems and some complications concerning data privacy do call for responsible adoptions. The conclusion of this paper provides directions for further research and calls for more investigation into state-of-the-art machine learning approaches and scalable solutions for the re-silient and sustainable future of hydroponic agriculture. The machine learning and deep learning models introduced in this research were evaluated against contemporary studies, revealing an accuracy enhancement ranging from 1.17% to 5.25%, depending on the dataset and algorithm employed. The present study conducts a comparative analysis involving machine learning algo-rithms, indicating that among all the models, the Decision Tree and Gradient Boosting Classifier achieved an accuracy of 99.42% in the dataset by making stage-wise decisions.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dementia is the seventh leading reason of death among all illnesses and one of the leading causes of disability among the world’s elderly people. Day by day the number of Alzheimer’s patients is raising. Considering the increasing rate and the dangers, Alzheimer’s disease should be diagnosed carefully. Machine learning is a potential technique for Alzheimer’s diagnosis but general users do not trust machine learning models due to the black-box nature. Even, some of those models do not provide the best performance because of using only neuroimaging data. To solve these issues, this paper proposes a novel explainable Alzheimer’s disease prediction model using a multimodal dataset. This approach performs a data-level fusion using clinical data, Freesurfer MRI segmentation data, and psychological data. For Alzheimer’s disease vs cognitively normal prediction, the random forest classifier provides 100% accuracy. Furthermore, Alzheimer’s disease and non-Alzheimer’s dementia should be classified properly because their symptoms are similar. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to present a three-class classification on Alzheimer’s disease vs cognitively normal vs non-Alzheimer’s dementia and achieved 99.86% accuracy using an ensemble model. Besides, a novel Alzheimer’s patient management architecture is also proposed in this work..

In this paper, a seamless connection between sensor technology and machine learning (ML) has been presented which has wide applicability in rehabilitation and physical medicine. The intent is to identify an ML algorithm which has a better performance, easy to deploy, and has less training time and consumes less computational resources. In short, we propose an algorithm which maximizes the synergy between a sensor and ML by maximizing classification performance and easy to do implementation, which is robust in computational power and lower in resource consumption. The premise of the work is to show the important considerations for evaluating ML algorithms for Upper-limb activity recognition for Physical medicine and rehabilitation field.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an airborne infectious disease caused by organisms in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) complex. In many low and middle-income countries, TB remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Once a patient has been diagnosed with TB, it is critical that healthcare workers make the most appropriate treatment decision given the individual conditions of the patient and the likely course of the disease based on medical experience. Depending on the prognosis, delayed or inappropriate treatment can result in unsatisfactory results including the exacerbation of clinical symptoms, poor quality of life, and increased risk of death. This work benchmarks machine learning models to aid TB prognosis using a Brazilian health database of confirmed cases and deaths related to TB in the State of Amazonas. The goal is to predict the probability of death by TB thus aiding the prognosis of TB and associated treatment decision making process. In its original form, the data set comprised 36,228 records and 130 fields but suffered from missing, incomplete, or incorrect data. Following data cleaning and preprocessing, a revised data set was generated comprising 24,015 records and 38 fields, including 22,876 reported cured TB patients and 1,139 deaths by TB. To explore how the data imbalance impacts model performance, two controlled experiments were designed using (1) imbalanced and (2) balanced data sets. The best result is achieved by the Gradient Boosting (GB) model using the balanced data set to predict TB-mortality, and the ensemble model composed by the Random Forest (RF), GB and Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) models is the best model to predict the cure class.

As a result, it is reported critically, accurately, and swiftly identifying ransomware. Numerous methods have been proposed for ransomware, each with pros and cons. The main objective of this study is to discuss current trends and potential future debates on automated ransomware detection. The document includes an overview of ransomware, a timeline of assaults, and details on their background. It also provides a comprehensive study of existing methods for identifying, avoiding, minimizing, and recovering from ransomware. An analysis of studies between 2017 and 2022 is another advantage of the study. This provides readers with up-to-date knowledge of the most recent developments in ransomware detection. It also highlights advancements in methods for combating ransomware attacks. In conclusion, this study highlights unanswered concerns and potential research challenges in ransomware detection.

Machine learning (ML) is increasingly useful as data grows in volume and accessibility as it can perform tasks (e.g. categorisation, decision making, anomaly detection, etc.) through experience and without explicit instruction, even when the data are too vast, complex, highly variable, full of errors to be analysed in other ways , . Thus, ML is great for natural language, images, or other complex and messy data available in large and growing volumes. Selecting a ML algorithm depends on many factors as algorithms vary in supervision needed, tolerable error levels, and ability to account for order or temporal context, among many other things. Importantly, ML methods for explicitly ordered or time-dependent data struggle with errors or data asymmetry. Most data are at least implicitly ordered, potentially allowing a hidden `arrow of time’ to affect non-temporal ML performance. This research explores the interaction of ML and implicit order by training two ML algorithms on Twitter data before performing automatic classification tasks under conditions that balance volume and complexity of data. Results show that performance was affected, suggesting that researchers should carefully consider time when selecting appropriate ML algorithms, even when time is only implicitly included.

The calculation of effective doses is crucial in many medical and radiation fields, in order to ensure safety and compliance with regulatory limits. Traditionally, Monte Carlo codes using detailed human body computational phantoms have been used for such calculations. Monte Carlo dose calculations can be time-consuming and require expertise in different processes when building the computational phantom and dose calculations. This study employs various machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict the organ doses and effective dose conversion coefficients (DCCs) for different anthropomorphic phantoms. A comprehensive data set comprising neutron energy bins, organ labels, masses, and densities is compiled from Monte Carlo studies, and is used to train and evaluate the supervised ML models. This study includes a broad range of phantoms, including those from the International Commission of Radiation Protection (ICRP-110, ICRP-116 phantom), the Visible-Human Project (VIP-man phantom), and the Medical Internal Radiation Dose Committee (MIRD-Phantom), with row data prepared using numerical data and organ categorical labeled data. Extreme gradient boosting (XGB), gradient boosting (GB), and the random forest-based Extra Trees regressor are employed to assess the performance of the ML models against published ICRP neutron DCC values using the mean square error, mean absolute error, and R² metrics. The results demonstrate that the ML predictions significantly vary in lower energy ranges and vary less in higher neutron energy ranges, while showing good agreement with ICRP values at mid-range energies. Moreover, the categorical data models align closely with the reference doses, suggesting the potential of ML in predicting effective doses for custom phantoms based on regional populations, such as the Saudi voxel-based model. This study paves the way for efficient dose prediction using ML, particularly in scenarios requiring rapid results without extensive computational resources or expertise. The findings also indicate potential improvements in data representation and the inclusion of larger data sets to refine model accuracy and prevent overfitting. Thus, ML methods can serve as valuable techniques for the continued development of personalized dosimetry.

Many works have recently identified the need to combine deep learning with extreme learning to strike a performance balance with accuracy especially in the domain of multimedia applications. Considering this new paradigm, namely convolutional extreme learning machine (CELM), we present a systematic review that investigates alternative deep learning architectures that use extreme learning machine (ELM) for a faster training to solve problems based on image analysis. We detail each of the architectures found in the literature, application scenarios, benchmark datasets, main results, advantages, and present the open challenges for CELM. We follow a well structured methodology and establish relevant research questions that guide our findings. We hope that the observation and classification of such works can leverage the CELM research area providing a good starting point to cope with some of the current problems in the image-based computer vision analysis.

The real estate market is exposed to many fluctuations in prices, because of existing correlations with many variables, some of which cannot be controlled or might even be unknown. Housing prices can increase rapidly (or in some cases, also drop very fast), yet the numerous listings available online where houses are sold or rented are not likely to be updated that often. In some cases, individuals interested in selling a house (or apartment) might include it in some online listing, and forget about updating the price. In other cases, some individuals might be interested in deliberately setting a price below the market price in order to sell the home faster, for various reasons. In this paper we aim at developing a machine learning application that identifies opportunities in the real estate market in real time, i.e., houses that are listed with a price substantially below the market price. This program can be useful for investors interested in the housing market. We have focused in a use case considering real estate assets located in the Salamanca district in Madrid (Spain) and listed in the most relevant Spanish online site for home sales and rentals. The application is formally implemented as a regression problem, that tries to estimate the market price of a house given features retrieved from public online listings. For building this application, we have performed a feature engineering stage in order to discover relevant features that allows attaining a high predictive performance. Several machine learning algorithms have been tested, including regression trees, $k$-nearest neighbors, support vector machines and neural networks, identifying advantages and handicaps of each of them.

Vaccines trigger a complicated immunological response that includes B and T cells, with B cells producing antibodies. SARS-CoV-2 immunity weakens over time after vaccination. Discovering key changes in antigen-reactive antibodies over time after vaccination could help improve vaccine efficiency. In this study, we collected data on blood antibody levels in a cohort of healthcare workers vaccinated for COVID-19 and obtained 73 antigens in samples from four groups according to the duration after vaccination, including 104 unvaccinated healthcare workers, 534 healthcare workers within 60 days after vaccination, 594 healthcare workers between 60 and 180 days after vaccination, and 141 healthcare workers over 180 days after vaccination. An efficient machine learning based framework containing four feature selection methods (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, light gradient boosting machine, Monte Carlo feature selection, and maximum relevance minimum redundancy) and four classification algorithms (decision tree, k-nearest neighbor, random forest, and support vector machine) was designed to screen out essential antigens. Several efficient classifiers with weighted F1 value around 0.75 were constructed. This study revealed that S1+S2, S1.mFcTag, S1.HisTag, S1, S2, Spike.RBD.His.Bac, Spike.RBD.rFc, and S1.RBD.mFc were most highly ranked among all features, where S1 and S2 are the subunits of Spike, and the suffixes represent the tagging information of different recombinant proteins. Meanwhile, the classification rules were extracted from the optimal decision tree to explain quantitatively the roles of antigens in the classification. This study identified antibodies associated with decreased clinical immunity based on populations with different time spans after vaccination. These antibodies have important implications for maintaining long-term immunity to SARS-CoV-2.

Still, the same unorganized data contain valuable information that is often hidden. The task of data mining techniques is to extract patterns to classify the data accurately. One of the various Data mining and its methods have been used often to diagnose various diseases. In this study, a machine learning (ML) technique based on distributed computing in the Apache Spark computing space is used to diagnose diabetics or hidden pattern of the illness to detect the disease using a large dataset in real-time. Implementation results of three ML techniques of Decision Tree (DT) technique or Random Forest (RF) or Support Vector Machine (SVM) in the Apache Spark computing environment using the Scala programming language and WEKA show that RF is more efficient and faster to diagnose diabetes in big data.

Radiomics refers to the extraction and analysis of a wide range of medical imaging features in a non-invasive and cost-effective manner to comprehensively characterise tumours. In this study, machine learning models combining radiomics and clinical factors were developed to predict retroperitoneal lymph node metastasis in testicular germ cell tumours (TGCTs), with the aim of reducing unnecessary treatment in this group of young patients. Ninety-one patients with surgically proven testicular germ cell tumours and contrast-enhanced CT were included in this retrospective study. After segmenting 273 retroperitoneal lymph nodes using dedicated radiomics software, we developed machine-learning prediction models using Random Forest (RF), Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM), Support Vector Machine Classifier (SVC), and K-Nearest Neighbours (KNN). For each classifier, we developed a radiomics-only, clinical-only, and combined radiomics-clinical prediction model. The models’ performances were evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs). The RF-based combined clinical and radiomic model showed the most robust performance in predicting LNM with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.95 (±0.03; 95% CI), accuracy 87%, precision 89%, recall 86% and F1 score 87%, followed by the LGBM model with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.93 (±0.05; 95% CI), accuracy 83%, precision 87%, recall 80% and F1 score 82%. Decision curve analysis demonstrated the clinical utility of our proposed RF-based combined clinical–radiomics model. Our study has identified reliable and predictive machine-learning techniques for predicting lymph node metastasis in early-stage testicular cancer. Identifying the most effective machine-learning approaches for predictive analysis based on radiomics integrating clinical risk factors can expand the applicability of radiomics in precision oncology and cancer treatment. Multi-centre validation is required to provide high-quality evidence for clinical application.

This paper presents a Multilayer Perceptron and Support Vector Machine algorithms approach to predict the number of COVID19 infections in different countries of America. It intends to serve as a tool for decision-making and tackling the pandemic that the world is currently facing. The models were trained and tested using open data from the European Union repository where a time series of confirmed contagious cases was modeled until May 25, 2020. The hyperparameters as number of neurons per layer were set up using a tabu list algorithm. The countries selected to carry out the study were Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and the United States. The metrics used are Pearson's correlation coefficient (CP), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Mean Percentage Error (MPE). For the testing stage we obtained the following results: Brazil, CP=0.65, MAE=2508 and MPE=17%; Chile, CP=0.64, MAE=504, MPE=16%; Colombia, CP=0.83, MAE=76, MPE=9%; Mexico, CP=0.77, MAE=231, MPE=9%; Peru, CP=0.76, MAE=686, MPE=18% and the United States of America, CP=0.93, MAE=799, MPE=4%. This resulted in powerful machine learning tools although it is necessary to use specific algorithms depending on the data and the stage of the country’s pandemic.

In this paper, we introduce deboost, a Python library devoted to weighted distance ensembling of predictions for regression and classification tasks. Its backbone resides on the scikit-learn library for default models and data preprocessing functions. It offers flexible choices of models for the ensemble as long as they contain the predict method, like the models available from scikit-learn. deboost is released under the MIT open-source license and can be downloaded from the Python Package Index (PyPI) at https://pypi.org/project/deboost. This study addresses the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions in the power sector, a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, by employing system engineering principles coupled with machine learning techniques. It focuses on analyzing the interplay between regional marginal prices (LMP) and carbon emissions within electricity markets. Leveraging a dataset that encompasses hourly LMP and carbon emissions data across various regions of New York State, the paper explores how market designs and operational strategies influence carbon output. The analysis utilizes neural networks to simulate and predict the effects of different market scenarios on carbon emissions, highlighting the role of LMP, loss costs, and congestion costs in environmental policy effectiveness. The results underscore the potential of system engineering to provide a holistic framework that integrates market dynamics, policy adjustments, and environmental impacts, thereby offering actionable insights into optimizing market designs for reduced carbon footprints. This approach not only enhances the understanding of the complex interactions within electricity markets but also supports the development of targeted strategies for achieving sustainable energy transitions.

Agricultural Big Data is a set of technologies that allows responding to the challenges of the new data era. In conjunction with machine learning, farmers can use data to address different problems such as farmers' decision-making, crops, weeds, animal research, land, food availability and security, weather, and climate change. The purpose of this paper is to synthesize the evidence regarding the challenges involved in implementing machine learning in Agricultural Big Data. We conducted a Systematic Literature Review applying the PRISMA protocol. This review includes 30 papers, published from 2015 to 2020. We develop a framework that summarizes the main challenges encountered, the use of machine learning techniques, as well as the main technologies used. A major challenge is the design of Agricultural Big Data architectures, due to the need to modify the set of technologies adapting the machine learning techniques, as the volume of data increases.

Today, across the most critical problems faced by hospitals and health centers are those caused by the existence of patients who do not attend their appointments. Among others, this practice generates waste of resources and increases the patients’ waiting list. To handle these problems, hospitals are actively trying to implement methods to reduce the idle time caused by patient no-shows. Many scheduling systems developed require predicting whether a patient will show up for an appointment or not. Although, a challenging problem resides in obtaining these estimates precisely. The goal of this work is to analyze how objective factors influence a patient not to attending their appointment, to identify the main causes that contribute to a patient’s decision, and to be able to predict whether or not the patient will attend the scheduled appointment. As a result, the obtained model is tested on a real dataset collected in a health center linked to the University of Vale do Itajaí (UNIVALI), which includes 25 features and about 5000 samples. The algorithm that produced the best results for the available dataset is the Random Forest classifier. It reveals the best recall rate (0.91), since it measures the ability of a classifier to find all the positive instances and achieves a receiver operating characteristic curve rate of 0.969.

In this short communication, a concept has been presented to model geographical data to predict future temperature of Tabuk, region. Machine learning has been applied to the weather station data to develop a prediction model. The preliminary results are promising and encouraging and are envisaging to further this research towards the determination of unknown temperature rise in the region. This is important to mention here, that the problem has been formulated as a Regression problem, NOT as a classification problem. Hence, applying Convolutional neural networks is not possible, due to the non-existence of classes or converting the temperature values to classes does not make any sense. Hence, this is defined as a regression problem which achieved encouraging desirable results.

This paper presents an innovative approach to dimensionality reduction and feature extraction in high-dimensional datasets, with a specific application focus on wood surface defect detection. The proposed framework integrates sparse modeling techniques, particularly Lasso and proximal gradient methods, into a comprehensive pipeline for efficient and interpretable feature selection. Leveraging pre-trained models such as VGG19 and incorporating anomaly detection methods like Isolation Forest and Local Outlier Factor, our methodology addresses the challenge of extracting meaningful features from complex datasets. Evaluation metrics such as accuracy and F1 score, alongside visualizations, are employed to assess the performance of the sparse modeling techniques. Through this work, we aim to advance the understanding and application of sparse modeling in machine learning, particularly in the context of wood surface defect detection.

Shear velocity logs are crucial in the oil and gas industry for assessing subsurface mechanical properties, including rock stiffness, shear strength, and seismic wave propagation, essential for optimizing hydrocarbon exploration and production strategies. However, obtaining shear velocity logs conventionally is expensive and time-consuming, especially when drilling additional wells solely for this purpose. With the recent boom in machine learning algorithms adoption across various scientific domains, it proved to be an extremely valuable tool for numerous applications in the oil and gas industry. It makes use of the readily available large datasets collected over decades and leverages this data to train powerful, data-driven models, reducing the reliance on empirical relationships that usually have poor generalization. This study follows this approach and presents the use and comparison of machine learning algorithms for predicting shear velocity logs from conventional and readily available logs in the Ahnet field, Algeria. Ultimately, this study aims to enhance reservoir assessment and optimize hydrocarbon recovery processes, potentially reducing exploration costs and improving oil and gas production decision-making in the region.

Objective: With just ten questions, the Berlin questionnaire (BQ) stands out as one of the simplest and most widely implemented non-invasive screening tools for detecting subjects at high risk for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a still underdiagnosed syndrome characterized by partial or complete obstruction of the upper airways during sleep. The main aim of this study was to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of the BQ through Machine Learning (ML) techniques. Methods: A ML classifier (hereafter, ML-10) was trained using the ten questions of the standard BQ. A simplified variant of the BQ, BQ-2, which comprises only two questions out of the total of ten, was also assessed in a ML context. A 10-fold cross validation scheme was used. Ground truth was provided by the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) measured by Home Sleep Apnea Testing. Model performance was determined comparing ML-10 and BQ-2 with the standard BQ by the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (ROC), Area Under the Curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. Results: ML-10 demonstrated superior performance in predicting the risk for OSA compared to the standard BQ and was also capable in classifying OSA with two different AHI thresholds (AHI>=15, AHI>=30), typically used in clinical practice. Remarkably, BQ-2 was also better in sensibility to assess moderate to severe OSA (AHI≥ 15) compared to the ML-10. Conclusions: The study underscores the importance of integrating ML techniques for early OSA detection, suggesting a direction for future research to improve diagnostic processes and patient outcomes in sleep medicine.

As telecommunication networks continue to grow, the volume, variety, and velocity of such `big data' poses an immense challenge for security and service analysts. A primary data format in such networks are Call Detail Records (CDRs), and more recently, eXtended Detail Records (XDRs), that capture a variety of information such as caller, receiver, duration, carrier, datetime, amongst other attributes. In this short paper, we investigate the current research trends and challenges that exist within this data-rich domain. As part of this, we look at the domain-specific tasks that analysts will seek to address, we look at how machine learning has been utilised to date within this domain, and we present our current findings on open research problems that are ripe for further investigation.

Introduction: Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the deadliest and most common causes of malignancy and death in men worldwide, more specifically with higher prevalence and mortality in developing countries. Factors such as age, family history, race and certain genetic mutations are some of the factors contributing to the occurrence of PCa in men. The recent advances in technology and algorithms gave rise to the computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) of PCa. With the availability of medical image datasets and emerging trends in state-of-the-art machine and deep learning techniques, there is a growth in recent related publications. Materials and Methods: In this study, we present a systematic review of PCa diagnosis with medical images using machine learning and deep learning techniques. We conducted a thorough review through relevant studies indexed in four databases (IEEE, PubMed, Springer and ScienceDirect) using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. With well-defined search terms, a total of 608 articles were identified and 77 met the final inclusion criteria. Key elements in the included papers were presented and conclusions were drawn from them. Results: Findings showed that the United States has the most research in PCa diagnosis with machine learning, Magnetic Resonance Images are the most used datasets and transfer learning is the most used method of diagnosing PCa in recent times. In addition, some available PCa datasets and some key considerations for choice of loss function in the deep learning models were presented. The limitations and lessons learnt were discussed and some key recommendations were made. Conclusion: The discoveries and the conclusions of this work have been organized so as to enable researchers in the same domain to use this work and make crucial implementation decisions.

Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) are sophisticated cyberattacks aimed at stealing sensitive information or causing damage over an extended period. Detecting APTs is crucial for maintaining cybersecurity, and machine learning (ML) has emerged as a powerful tool in this domain. This paper explores the role of ML algorithms in detecting APTs, comparing their accuracy and effectiveness. We evaluate various algorithms, discuss the challenges in achieving superior accuracy, and suggest strategies for improvement. Our findings highlight the potential and limitations of ML in APT detection, emphasizing the need for continuous advancements in this field.

This project focuses on using machine learning classification algorithms to determine whether two people are 6 feet apart or not. Two Raspberry Pis were used simulate smart phones. RSSI values of the Bluetooth beacons transmitted between the Raspberry Pis were collected and recorded to train the classifier. The Gaussian Support Vector Machine Classifer yielded the highest testing accuracy of 79.670 and the Decision Tree Classifier yielded the highest AUC of 0.80.

The importance of knowing the advance time in drip irrigation lines lies in its precision, as this influences the proper management of water and nutrients delivery. The mathematical calculation to determine the advance time is based on the general hydraulic flow equation, which relates the fluid velocity and the cross-sectional area of the pipe to the volume of water flowing through it. However, in irrigation pipes, where the flow is a mixture of dripper properties, its pressure, the approach to solving the advance time is different, as it is the sum of individual advance times for each segment. To address this issue, Python 3.11 was used along with various libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, Seaborn, and Scikit-learn to create a modeling environment and run algorithms that could predict outcomes. A program was developed that calculates the advance time for each segment of the drip line using partial velocities, and a dataset was generated that was used to train and test machine learning models. Several machine learning algorithms such as Linear Regression, Support Vector Machines (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Decision Trees, and Random Forests were implemented to predict the advance time. Additionally, SciPy optimize was used to obtain multivariable equations that describe the advance time in drip irrigation lines. Results showed that the dripper flow has the greatest influence on the advance time, followed by the diameter and distance. Decision Tree and SVM models had the best accuracy with scores above 98%. Equations were found to calculate the advance time in the complete drip line and in 95% of its length, with coefficients of determination close to 99.33%. This study demonstrated the importance of understanding the relationship between dripper parameters and travel time in drip irrigation, as well as the utility of machine learning and optimization tools for predicting and modeling this phenomenon.

In tunnel excavation with boring machines, the tunnel face is supported to avoid collapse and minimise settlement. This article proposes the use of reinforcement learning, specifically the Deep Q-Network algorithm, to predict the face support pressure. The approach is tested both analytically and numerically. By using the soil properties ahead of the tunnel face and the overburden depth as the input, the algorithm is capable of predicting the optimal tunnel face support pressure, adapting to changes in geological and geometrical conditions.

Machine learning, including deep learning, reinforcement learning, and generative artificial intelligence are revolutionising every area of our lives when data is made available. With the help of these methods, we can decipher information from larger datasets while addressing the complex nature of biological systems in a more efficient way. Although machine learning methods have been introduced to human genetic epidemiological research as early as 2004, those were never used to their full capacity. In this review, we outline some of the main applications of machine learning to assigning human genetic loci to health outcomes. We summarise widely used methods and discuss their advantages and challenges. We also identify several tools, such as Combi, GenNet and GMSTool, specifically designed to integrate these methods for hypothesis-free analysis of genetic variation data. We elaborate on the additional value and limitations of these tools from a geneticist’s perspective. Finally, we discuss the fast-moving field of foundation models and large multi-modal omics biobank initiatives.

Additionally, this paper aims at showing the state of the art of new techniques used in transportation engineering that might have synergies with other industries (eg. commodities cost reduction, energy supply…). Finally, this paper aims to provide foundation for further research and development using more sophisticated data and algorithms that will help to close the gap between theoretical and practical scope of this techniques.

Machine learning (ML) has emerged as a critical tool for making sense of the growing amount of genetic and genomic data available because of its ability to find complex patterns in high dimensional and heterogeneous data. While the complexity of ML models is what makes them powerful, it also makes them difficult to interpret. Fortunately, recent efforts to develop approaches that make the inner workings of ML models understandable to humans have improved our ability to make novel biological insights using ML. Here we discuss the importance of interpretable ML, different strategies for interpreting ML models, and examples of how these strategies have been applied. Finally, we identify challenges and promising future directions for interpretable ML in genetics and genomics.

Stroke constitutes a significant public health concern due to its impact on mortality and morbidity. This study investigates the utility of machine learning algorithms in predicting stroke and identifying key risk factors using data from the Suita study, comprising 7,389 participants and 53 variables. Initially, unsupervised K-prototype clustering categorized participants into risk clusters, while five supervised models including Logistic Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Light Gradient Boosted Machine (Light-GBM) were employed to predict stroke outcomes. Stroke incidence disparities among identified risk clusters using the unsupervised K-prototype clustering method are substantial, according to the findings. Supervised learning, particularly RF was a preferable option because of the higher levels of performance metrics. The Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) method identified age, systolic blood pressure, hypertension, estimated glomerular filtration rate, metabolic syndrome, and blood glucose level as key predictors of stroke, aligning with findings from the unsupervised clustering approach in high-risk groups. Additionally, previously unidentified risk factors such as elbow joint thickness, fructosamine, hemoglobin, and calcium level demonstrate potential for stroke prediction. In conclusion, machine learning facilitated accurate stroke risk predictions and highlighted potential biomarkers, offering a data-driven framework for risk assessment and biomarker discovery.

The application, results, and performance metrics are discussed based on the collected observations, computations, and statistics in the studies, which revealed records of high accuracy degrees ranging from 86% to 98% on average and quality ML models including Neural Networks (NNs), Support Vector Machines (SVMs), and LSTM, as well as deep learning models that disclosed effective results of determining challenges and problems within the optical fiber lines. The review mainly centralized on superior machine learning technologies that surpass traditional techniques in fault detection and localization for improved optical fiber networks’ operations while providing insights into the limitations and challenges encountered in real-world applications of these models, offering a comprehensive perspective on the optical fiber network’s domain.

The goal was to create a novel machine learning (ML) model which can predict the magnitude and direction of pubertal mandibular growth in males with Class II malocclusion. Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 123 males at three time points (T1: 12, T2: 14, T3: 16 years old) were collected from an online database of longitudinal growth studies. Each radiograph was traced, and 7 different ML models were trained using 38 data points obtained from 92 subjects. 31 subjects were used as a test group, to predict post-pubertal mandibular length and Y-axis using input data from T1 and T2 combined (2-year prediction), and T1 alone (4-year prediction). Mean absolute errors (MAEs) were used to evaluate the accuracy of each model. For all ML methods tested using the 2-year prediction, the MAEs for post-pubertal mandibular length ranged from 2.11-6.07mm and 0.85-2.74° for the Y-axis. For all ML methods tested with 4-year prediction, the MAEs for post-pubertal mandibular length ranged from 2.32-5.28 mm and 1.25-1.72° for the Y-axis. Besides its initial length, the most predictive factors for mandibular length were found to be chronological age, upper and lower face heights, upper and lower incisor positions and inclinations. For the Y-axis, the most predictive factors were found to be Y-axis at earlier time points, SN-MP, SN-Pog, SNB and SNA. Whilst the potential of ML techniques to accurately forecast future mandibular growth in Class II cases is promising, a requirement for more substantial sample sizes exists to further enhance the precision of these predictions.

The proliferation of fake news on social media platforms poses significant challenges to information authenticity and public trust. In this study, the impact of various word embedding techniques on the performance of both machine learning and deep learning models for fake news detection is systematically evaluated. The comprehensive TruthSeeker dataset, which spans over a decade of labeled news articles and social media posts, is utilized. Three popular word embedding techniques are analyzed: TF-IDF, Word2Vec, and FastText. These embeddings were tested with multiple machine learning classifiers, including logistic regression, naive Bayes, K-nearest neighbors, support vector machines, multilayer perceptrons, decision trees, and random forests, as well as deep learning models, specifically convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Among machine learning models, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) with TF-IDF achieved the highest accuracy of 99.03%, precision of 98.92%, recall of 99.15%, and F1 score of 99.03%. The Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) also demonstrated strong performance with Word2Vec, reaching an accuracy of 95.24%, precision of 94.95%, recall of 95.50%, and F1 score of 95.07%. For deep learning models, CNNs combined with TF-IDF embeddings showed outstanding results, achieving an accuracy of 98.99%, precision of 98.56%, recall of 99.48%, and F1 score of 99.02%. These results highlight the critical role of word embeddings in enhancing model accuracy and reliability in misinformation detection.

In this paper, we study the usage of machine learning models for sales time series forecasting. The effect of machine learning generalization has been considered. A stacking approach for building regression ensemble of single models has been studied. The results show that using stacking technics, we can improve the performance of predictive models for sales time series forecasting.

Cone snails (genus Conus) are venomous marine snails that inject prey with a lethal cocktail of conotoxins, small, secreted, cysteine-rich peptides. Given the diversity and often high affinity for their molecular targets, consisting of ion channels, receptors or transporters, many conotoxins have become invaluable pharmacological probes, drug leads and therapeutics. Transcriptome sequencing of Conus venom glands followed by de novo assembly and homology-based toxin identification and annotation is currently the state-of-the-art for discovery of new conotoxins. However, homology-based search techniques, by definition, can only detect novel toxins that are homologous to previously reported conotoxins. To overcome these obstacles for discovery we have created ConusPipe, a machine learning tool that utilizes prominent chemical characters of conotoxins to predict whether a certain transcript in a Conus transcriptome, which has no otherwise detectable homologs in current reference databases, is a putative conotoxin. By using ConusPipe on RNASeq data of 10 species, we report 5,230 new putative conotoxin transcripts that have no homologues in current reference databases. 893 of these were identified by at least 3 out of 4 models used. These data significantly expand current publicly available conotoxin datasets and our approach provides a new computational avenue for the discovery of novel toxin families.

The combination of new-generation information technology and manufacturing technology has resulted in major and profound impact on future development paradigm of manufacturing. It is challenging for existing methods to conduct a multidimensional trend exploration related to machine tool domain, which is the basis of virtually everything in manufacturing. In this paper, we proposed an integrating approach framework combined topic models, bibliometric, trend analysis and patent analysis to mine insightful information about future development from multi-source data related to machine tool, such as papers, grants, patents and news. Specifically, papers and grants provided two different perspectives to explore the current focuses and future trends in machine tool research. Furthermore, the future technology development of machine tool was investigated through patents analysis. Finally, news related to machine tool industry in recent years was analyzed to analyze future machine tool business mode. The integration of the above various analytical methods and the multi-dimensional mining of literatures enabled the analysis of the future development of machine tool domain systematically from multi-perspectives which include research, technology development and industry. The conclusions obtained in this paper is beneficial to different communities of machine tool in terms of determining the research directions for researchers, identifying industry opportunities for corporations and developing reasonable industry policy for policy makers.

This research developed and evaluated a machine learning model for predicting thunderstorm frequency, in the Wa region of Ghana, with a focus on its impact for agricultural planning and management. Using a range of meteorological variables including Total Column Water(TCW), Total Column Rain Water(TCRW), and Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE), the research aim to identify important predictors of thunderstorm occurrence and quantify their relative importance. A Random Forest algorithm was employed to create the predictive model, which was trained and tested on historical weather data. The model demonstrated good predictive capabilities, explaining approximate 72.6% of the variance in thunderstorm occurrences, with a mean absolute error of 2.34 storms and an index of agreement of 0.926. Key findings showed the importance of atmospheric moisture content, particularly TCW and TCRW , in predicting thunderstorm frequency. Atmospheric instability measures, such as CAPE, played a secondary but important role. The model showed strength in capturing overall trends in thunderstorm frequencies but exhibited some limitations in predicting extreme events. The research contributes to the field of meteorology by demonstrating the effectiveness of machine learning techniques in capturing complex atmospheric interactions leading to thunderstorm formation. It also provides a framework for linking thunderstorm predictions to potential agricultural impacts, enhancing the practical applicability of weather forecasting in the agricultural sector. The study lays the groundwork for more sophisticated, localized weather predictions systems that can greatly benefit agricultural planning and broader weather dependent activities in the region. Future research dimensions include exploring advanced feature engineering, integrating temporal and spatial analysis, and developing agricultural impacts models to further enhance the practical utility of thunderstorm predictions.

In this paper, we propose methods for brain tumor detection in MRI images based on ensemble learning. We build upon prior research on ensemble methods by testing the concatenation of pre-trained models: features extracted via transfer learning are merged and segmented by classification algorithms or a stacked ensemble of those algorithms. The proposed approach achieved accuracy scores of 0.98 , outperforming a benchmark VGG-16 model. Considerations to granular computing are given in the paper as well.

In the information society, challenges posed by climate change and population growth have rendered the development of crop varieties with enhanced abiotic stress tolerance and improved nutritional value a prime objective in agricultural advancement. Chinese cabbage, recognized for its significant economic benefits, not only supplements the human body with vitamin C and vitamin E but also plays a crucial role in preventing cardiovascular diseases. Nonetheless, its growth and development are adversely affected by various abiotic stresses, including waterlogging and temperature fluctuations. Consequently, the identification of abiotic stress-responsive genes (SRGs) in Chinese cabbage is of paramount importance for enhancing its resilience. While transcriptome analysis is a reliable approach for identifying stress-related genes, it is inherently species-specific and can be time-consuming. In this study, we proposed a computational model utilizing machine learning techniques to predict genes in Chinese cabbage that respond to four specific abiotic stresses: cold, heat, drought, and salt. To construct this model, we compiled data from relevant studies regarding the response to these abiotic stresses, and the protein sequences encoded by abiotic SRGs were converted into numerical representations for subsequent analysis. For the selected feature set, we employed six distinct machine learning binary classification algorithms. The results demonstrate that various models can effectively predict SRGs associated with the four types of abiotic stresses, with the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (auROC) for the models being 81.42%, 87.92%, 80.85%, and 88.87%, respectively. Furthermore, we have established an online prediction server, named MLAS (http://47.122.66.48:4433), designed to predict the response genes of Chinese cabbage under the aforementioned abiotic stresses. The computational model and the prediction tool developed in this study can serve as valuable resources for the identification of abiotic SRGs in Chinese cabbage.

Artificial learning and machine learning is playing a pivotal role is the society especially in the field of medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. Particularly its algorithms, neural networks or other recurrent networks drive this area. In this review, we have taken into account the diverse use of AI in a number of pharmaceutical industries including discovery of drugs, repurposing, development of pharmaceutical drug and its clinical trials. In addition, the efficiency of these artificial or machine learning programs in achieving the target drugs in short time period, along with accurate dosage and cost effectively of the drug has also been discussed. Numerous applications of AI in property prediction such as ADMET have been used for prediction of strength of this technology in QSAR. In case of de-novo synthesis, it results in generation of novel drug molecules with unique design proving this a promising field fir drug design. Moreover, its involvement in synthetic planning, ease of synthesis and much more contribute to automated drug discovery in near future.

Longitudinal dispersion coefficient (LDC) plays an essential role in modeling the transport of pollution and sediment in the natural rivers. As a result of transportation processes, the concentration of pollution changes along the river. Different studies have been conducted to provide simple equations for estimating LDC. In this study, Support Vector Regression (SVR), Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), M5P and Random Forest (RF) examined to predict the LDC in the natural streams. The hydraulic and geometric features of different rivers gathered for developing the mentioned models for LDC estimation and various statistical criteria were utilized to scrutinize of the models. Furthermore, the Taylor chart was used to evaluate the models and achieved results showed that among machine learning models, M5P displayed the superior performance with CC of 0.823, SI of 0.812, NS of 0.577 and WI of 0.879. As well, S-D model with CC of 0.795 SI of 0.827, NS of 0.558 and WI of 0.890 had more precise results than other empirical models. The results indicates that the developed M5P model with simple formulations was superior to other machine learning models and empirical models and therefore, it can be used as a proper tool for estimating LDC in natural rivers.

Analytics have become increasingly popular among sports in recent years, providing valuable information regarding physical and mental health. Many athletes have found that analytics during training can help to improve their performance, reduce the risk of injury, and enhance their overall well-being. This paper aims to improve the results of handball players by applying a method for measuring the influence of different trials on aggregate performance calculated per each athlete in order to qualify for the Olympic Games. By separating the isolated action of each trial, the result is an additional influence caused by the interaction of factors or the simultaneous action. That might explain why the neuromuscular feedback loop is utterly necessary to perform handball motor actions. Further on, the ML analysis can help identify areas for improvement, optimize training programs, and enhance overall team performance.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, highly aggressive skin cancer characterized by two etiologies: the first one, observed in most cases, is attributed to Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV), a DNA tumor virus, while the second one is due to ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure. Currently, there are limited diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic biomarkers available for MCC. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNA molecules that do not code for proteins but regulate various cellular processes, including cell cycle progression, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. The dysregulation of miRNAs has been associated with a wide range of cancers since they can act as either tumor suppressors or oncogenes. This paper aims to collect, summarize and re-organize the recent discoveries concerning miRNAs, whose dysregulation in the pathogenesis and progression of MCC is slowly emerging. Furthermore, the potential clinical applications of miRNAs as diagnostic biomarkers, possible differentiation between MCPyV-related and unrelated MCC, predictors of response to therapy and prognostics are also discussed. From this review, it emerges that miRNAs may have, in the near future, the potential to become clinically significant in improving the diagnostic accuracy, prognostic evaluation, and therapeutic options of MCCs. Finally, the new perspectives on the poorly explored field of artificial intelligence in MCC are provided.

Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) constitute a fundamental framework for modeling various physical phenomena across diverse fields such as physics, engineering, and finance. Solving PDEs accurately and efficiently remains a significant challenge, particularly when dealing with complex systems or high-dimensional data. In this paper, we present a novel approach based on deep learning techniques to investigate the effective factors in solving PDEs. Our methodology leverages the expressive power of deep neural networks to learn and represent the underlying relationships between input parameters and the solutions of PDEs. By incorporating domain knowledge into the network architecture and training process, our approach aims to provide insights into the key factors influencing the solution of PDEs. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method through numerical experiments on various PDEs, showcasing its capability to identify important features and improve predictive accuracy. Our findings suggest that deep learning techniques offer a promising avenue for understanding and analyzing the complex dynamics inherent in PDEs, paving the way for enhanced computational methods in scientific and engineering applications.

In recent years, Machine Learning (ML) has become a buzzword in the petroleum industry with numerous applications which guide engineers in better decision-making. The most powerful tool that most production development decisions rely on is reservoir simulation with applications in numerous modeling procedures, such as individual simulation runs, history matching and production forecast and optimization. However, all these applications lead to considerable computational time and computer resources associated costs, rendering reservoir simulators as not fast and robust enough, thus introducing the need for more time-efficient and smart tools, like ML models which are able to adapt and provide fast and competent results that mimic the simulator’s performance within an acceptable error margin. The first part of the present study (Part I) offers a detailed review of ML techniques in the petroleum industry, specifically in subsurface reservoir simulation, for the cases of individual simulation runs and history matching, whereas the ML-based Production Forecast Optimization applications will be presented in Part II. This review can assist engineers as a complete source for applied ML techniques since, with the generation of large-scale data in everyday activities, ML is becoming a necessity for future and more efficient applications.

Use of Machine Learning (ML) methodologies in optical communications has paved a new pathway. In this paper, firstly, we discuss the use of ML methodologies for reducing optical fiber nonlinearities, nonlinearity compensation, fault detection and optical performance monitoring. Then we present our recent work where we compare RL-SARSA and SVM based method with conventional method. The results show that RL-SARSA and SVM methods are successful candidates in mitigating the nonlinearities in proposed system as compared to conventional optical communication system.

Plants have a natural protective process of altering their genetic molecules in response to changing environments. To uncover the genetic potential of plants, it is crucial to understand how they adapt to adverse conditions by analyzing their genetic molecules. In the study, we focused on understanding the responsive genes of tomatoes under drought conditions. We analyzed RNASeq data from different Tomato genotypes, tissue types, and different drought durations. We used a time series scale to identify early and late drought-responsive gene modules and applied a machine learning method to identify the best responsive genes. We found six candidate genes of Tomato (ASCT, FLA2, BAG5, DCL2b, NFP7.3, and ADC1) that were responsive to drought. We further constructed their protein-protein interaction network to identify their potential interactors and found them drought responsive proteins. The candidate genes can help to explore the adaptation of tomato plants under drought conditions. The identification of these candidate genes and modules can have far-reaching implications for molecular breeding and genome editing in Tomato, providing insights into the molecular mechanisms that underlie drought adaptation. This research underscores the importance of the genetic basis of plant adaptation, particularly in changing climates and growing populations.

In this review we summarize existing trends of flow control used to improve the aerodynamic efficiency of wings. We first discuss active methods to control turbulence, starting with flat-plate geometries and building towards the more complicated flow around wings. Then, we discuss active approaches to control separation, a crucial aspect towards achieving high aerodynamic efficiency. Furthermore, we highlight methods relying on turbulence simulation, and discuss various levels of modelling. Finally, we thoroughly revise data-driven methods, their application to flow control, and focus on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). We conclude that this methodology has the potential to discover novel control strategies in complex turbulent flows of aerodynamic relevance.

Epigenetic aging has been found associated with a number of phenotypes and diseases. Few studies investigated its effect on lung function in relatively older people. However, this effect has not been explored in younger population. This study examines whether lung function at adolescent can be predicted with epigenetic age accelerations (AAs) using machine learning techniques. DNA methylation based AAs were estimated in 326 matched samples at two time points (at 10 years and 18 years) from the Isle of Wight Birth Cohort. Five machine learning regression models (linear, lasso, ridge, elastic net, and Bayesian ridge) were used to predict FEV1 (Forced Expiratory Volume in one second) and FVC (Forced Vital Capacity) at 18 years from feature selected predictor variables (based on mutual information) and AA changes between the two time points. The best models were ridge regression (R2 = 75.21% ± 7.42%; RMSE = 0.3768 ± 0.0653) and elastic net regression (R2 = 75.38% ± 6.98%; RMSE = 0.445 ± 0.069) for FEV1 and FVC, respectively. This study suggests that the application of machine learning in conjunction with tracking changes in AA over life span can be beneficial to assess the lung health in adolescence.

Automation is at the core of modern industry. It aims to increase production rates, decrease production costs, and reduce human intervention in order to avoid human mistakes and time delays during manufacturing. On the other hand, human assistance is usually required to customize products and reconfigure control systems through a special process interface called Human Machine Interface (HMI). Machine Learning (ML) algorithms can effectively be used to resolve this tradeoff between full automation and human assistance. This paper provides an example of the industrial application of ML algorithms to help human operators save their mental effort and avoid time delays and unintended mistakes for the sake of high production rates. Based on real-time sensor measurements, several ML algorithms have been tried to classify paper rolls according to paper grammage in a white paper mill. The performance evaluation shows that the AdaBoost algorithm is the best ML algorithm for this application with classification accuracy (CA), precision, and recall of 97.1%. The generalization of the proposed approach for achieving a cost-effective mill construction by reducing the total number of the required physical sensors will be the subject of our future research.

The history of Artificial Intelligence (AI) development dates to the 40s. The researchers showed strong expectations until the 70s, when they began to encounter serious difficulties and investments were greatly, reduced. With the introduction of the Industry 4.0, one of the techniques adopted for AI implementation is Machine Learning (ML) that focuses on the machines ability to receive data series and learn on their own. Given the considerable importance of the subject, researchers have completed many studies on ML to ensure that machines are able to replace or relieve human tasks. This research aims to analyze, systematically, the literature on several aspects, including publication year, authors, scientific sector, country, institution, keywords. Analyzing existing literature on AI is a necessary stage to recommend policy on the matter. The analysis has been done using Web of Science and SCOPUS database. Furthermore, UCINET and NVivo 12 software have been used to complete them. Literature review on ML and AI empirical studies published in the last century was carried out to highlight the evolution of the topic before and after Industry 4.0 introduction, from 1999 to now. Eighty-two articles were reviewed and classified. A first interesting result is the greater number of works published by USA and the increasing interest after the birth of Industry 4.0.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a Random Forest model for predicting above-ground biomass in South Carolina (SC), utilizing diverse remote sensing and climatic data sources. SC, with its humid subtropical climate and varied geography, including the Atlantic coastal plain, Piedmont, and Blue Ridge Mountains, poses unique challenges for biomass estimation. We integrated global biomass datasets for 2010, MODIS vegetation indices (NDVI and EVI), Leaf Area Index (LAI) from MOD15A2H, and climate data from TerraClimate. The model was trained using 2010 data and applied to 2022 datasets to assess biomass changes. To validate the model, plot-level biomass estimates from the 2023 FIA data were interpolated using Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW). Performance evaluation showed a strong positive correlation between predicted and observed biomass, with a correlation coefficient of 0.77 and an R² value of 0.62, indicating that the model explains 62% of the variability in biomass. Comparison with IDW-interpolated biomass data resulted in a correlation coefficient of 0.64, confirming the model's validity. Although the Random Forest model demonstrated reliable predictions, the study suggests potential improvements by incorporating additional data sources and advanced modeling techniques. The findings emphasize the value of integrating remote sensing data, machine learning, and interpolation methods to enhance biomass estimation accuracy. This research provides crucial insights into biomass distribution in SC and establishes a basis for future studies on forest monitoring and carbon accounting, highlighting the importance of combining various data sources for comprehensive environmental analysis.

As data driven models gain importance in driving decisions and processes, recently it becomes increasingly important to visualize the data with both speed and accuracy. A massive amount of data is presently generated in the educational sphere from various learning platforms, tools, and institutions. Visual analytics of educational big data has capability to improve student learning, develop strategies for personalized learning, and improve faculty productivity. How-ever, there are limited advancements in the education domain for data-driven decision making leveraging the recent advancements in the field of machine learning. Some of the recent tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Microsoft Azure suite, Sisense etc. leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to visualize data and generate insights out of it, however their ap-plicability in educational advances is limited. This paper focuses on leveraging machine learn-ing and visualization techniques to demonstrate their utility through a practical implementation using k-12 state assessment data compiled from the institutional websites of the State of Texas and Louisiana. Effective modeling and predictive analytics are the focus of the sample use case presented in this research. Our approach demonstrates the applicability of web technology in conjunction with machine learning to provide a cost-effective and timely solution to visualize and analyze big educational data. Additionally, ad-hoc visualization provides contextual anal-ysis within areas of concern for Education Agencies (EA).

Mechanistic models have been used for centuries to describe complex interconnected processes, including biological ones. As the scope of these models has widened, so have their computational demands. This complexity can limit their suitability when running many simulations or when real-time results are required. Surrogate machine learning models can be used to approximate the behaviour of complex mechanistic models, and once built, their computational demands are several orders of magnitude lower. This paper provides an overview of the relevant literature, both from an applicability and a theoretical perspective. For the latter, the paper focuses on the design and training of the underlying machine learning models. Application-wise, we show how machine learning surrogates have been used to approximate different mechanistic models. We present a perspective on how these approaches can be applied to models representing biological processes with potential industrial applications (e.g., metabolism and whole-cell modelling) and show why surrogate machine learning models may hold the key to making the simulation of complex biological models possible using a typical desktop computer.

Supplier selection is an important part of supply chain management (SCM) for any organisation to achieve their objectives. The problem has attracted great interest from academics and practitioners. The selection process starts with determining the most important criteria out of a wide range. Many academic researchers apply multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques for supplier selection. However, the complexity of such approaches may increase significantly, especially when considering a large number of suppliers and selection criteria. This paper proposes an integrated approach combining machine learning classification with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to select and evaluate the most suitable supplier. A Decision Tree (DT) classifier is used to select the most important criteria, instead of applying AHP on the complete set of criteria. The applicability of the approach is demonstrated using data from Libyan companies. Results show that decision trees can successfully lead to a most important subset of selection criteria, which would lead to a less complex application of AHP.

The present research project entitled "Development of a method for predicting the optimal maturity level of avocado using machine learning" aims to establish an accurate and efficient approach to assess the maturity of avocados using machine learning methodologies. This research specifically focuses on identifying the relevant physical and chemical characteristics of avocados, creating a dataset containing categorized images of maturity levels, and creating machine learning models capable of accurately predicting fruit maturity. The studies reveal that the application of machine learning, in particular convolutional neural networks and multisensor models, has the potential to transform the prediction of avocado maturity and thus improve product quality and customer satisfaction. The findings indicate that the proposed techniques achieve an accuracy rate of over 90%, demonstrating their viability for integration into mobile applications that can benefit growers and suppliers in their decision-making processes.

The impact of the accurate estimated time of arrival (ETA) is often overlooked by bus operators. By providing accurate ETA to riders, it gives them the impression of bus services is efficient and reliable and this promotes higher ridership in the long run. This research project aims to predict bus arrival time by using the Support Vector Regression (SVR) model which is based on the same theory as the Support Vector Machine (SVM). Urban City Bus data covering part of the Petaling Jaya area (route name PJ03) is used in this research work. Features related to traffic such as travel duration, a distance of the road, weather and operation at peak or non-peak hour have been used as input in the training of the SVR model. By using kernel trick and specifying optimum parameters, all the features in higher dimensions are efficiently calculated and the SVR model achieves convergence. The model is evaluated with the test set of data split from the original dataset. The experimental result indicates the SVR model displays good prediction ability with its low average error on the prediction result. However, weather data has not been influential to the prediction model as the results of the model trained with and without weather data show a negligible difference.

This article presents a review of current advances and future prospects in the field of forecasting renewable energy generation using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques. With the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the electricity grid, accurate forecasting of their generation becomes crucial for efficient grid operation and energy management. Traditional forecasting methods have limitations, and thus ML and DL algorithms have gained popularity due to their ability to learn complex relationships from data and provide accurate predictions. This paper reviews the different approaches and models that have been used for renewable energy forecasting and discusses their strengths and limitations. It also highlights the challenges and future research directions in the field, such as dealing with uncertainty and variability in renewable energy generation, data availability, and model interpretability. Finally, this paper emphasizes the importance of developing robust and accurate renewable energy forecasting models to enable the integration of RES into the electricity grid and facilitate the transition towards a sustainable energy future.

In this paper major machine learning (ML) tools and the most important applications developed elsewhere for numerical weather and climate modeling systems (NWCMS) are reviewed. NWCMSs are briefly introduced. The most important papers published in this field in recent years are reviewed. The advantages and limitations of the ML approach in applications to NWCMS are briefly discussed. Currently, this field is experiencing explosive growth. Several important papers are published every week. Thus, this paper should be considered a simple introduction to the problem.

Tracking and early identification of suspected cases are essential to control and prevent potential COVID-19 outbreaks. One of the most popular techniques used to track this disease is the use of Infrared cameras to identify individuals with elevated body temperatures. However, they are limited by their inability to be implemented in open public settings such as public parks or even outdoor recreational centers. This limits their ability to effectively track possible COVID-19 patients as open public recreational places such as parks, concert venues and other public venues are hotspots for the spreading of the virus. Other technological solutions such as thermal scanners require an individual to perform the actual testing as they are not individual standalone technologies. This method of testing can potentially cause the transmission of the virus between the tester and the individual getting tested. As can be seen, an alternative solution is essential to solving this issue. In this study, we aim to present the system, design and potential scope of a non-invasive system that can diagnose and identify potential COVID-19 patients using thermal and optical images of the individual using drone technology. The proposed system (COVIDRONE) combines multi-modal machine intelligence, computer vision and real-time monitoring to enable scalable monitoring. The system will also involve the use of machine learning algorithms for better and more accurate diagnosis. We envisage that development of such technologies may help in developing technological solutions to combat infectious disease threats in the future pandemics.

The accurate counting of passengers in public transport systems is crucial for optimizing operations, improving service quality, and planning infrastructure. It can also contribute to reducing the number of public transport lines where a high frequency of vehicles is not needed in certain periods during the year, but also by increasing the number of lines where the need is increased. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current methodologies and technologies used for passenger counting, with a focus on image processing and machine learning techniques and concepts. The paper explores various algorithms, including traditional computer vision methods and advanced deep learning approaches, highlighting their strengths and limitations. Additionally, the paper examines the integration of these technologies with other sensing modalities such as infrared sensors, Wi-Fi, and RFID. By analyzing recent advancements and case studies, this review aims to offer insights into the effectiveness, scalability, and practicality of different passenger counting solutions and offers a solution proposal. The paper also analyzed the current GDPR regulation that applies to the European Union and how it affects the use of systems like this. Future research directions and potential areas for technological innovation are also discussed to guide further developments in this field.

Energy demand forecasting is a fundamental aspect of modern energy management. It impacts resource planning, economic stability, environmental sustainability, and energy security. This importance is making it critical for countries worldwide, particularly in cases like Türkiye, where the energy dependency ratio is notably high. The goal of this study is to propose ensemble machine learning methods such as boosting, bagging, blending, and stacking with hyperparameter tuning and k-fold cross-validation, and investigate the application of these methods for predicting Türkiye's energy demand. This study utilizes population, GDP per capita, imports and exports as input parameters based on historical data from 1979 to 2021 in Türkiye. Eleven combinations of all predictor variables were analyzed, and the best one was selected. It was observed that a very high correlation exists among population, GDP, imports, exports, and energy demand. In the first phase, the preliminary performance was investigated of 19 different machine learning algorithms using 5-fold cross-validation and measured their performance using five different metrics: MSE, RMSE, MAE, R-squared, and MAPE. Secondly, ensemble models were constructed by utilizing individual machine learning algorithms, and the performance of these ensemble models was compared with both each other and the best-performing individual machine learning algorithm. The analysis of the results revealed that placing Ridge as the meta-learner and using ET, RF and Ridge as the base learners in the stacking ensemble model produced superior results compared to the other models across performance metrics. It is anticipated that the findings of this research can be applied globally and prove valuable for energy policy planning in any country. The results obtained not only highlight the accuracy and effectiveness of our predictive model but also underscore the broader implications of this study within the framework of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In the field of orthodontics, providing patients with accurate treatment time estimates is of utmost importance. As orthodontic practices continue to evolve and embrace new advancements, incorporating machine learning (ML) methods becomes increasingly valuable in improving orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. This study aimed to develop a novel ML model capable of predicting the orthodontic treatment duration based on essential pre-treatment variables. Patients who completed comprehensive orthodontic treatment at the Indiana University School of Dentistry were included in this retrospective study. Fifty-seven pre-treatment variables were collected and used to train and test 9 different ML models. The performance of each model was assessed using descriptive statistics, intraclass correlation coefficients, and one-way analysis of variance tests. Random Forest, Lasso, and Elastic Net were found to be the most accurate, with a mean absolute error of 7.27 months in predicting treatment duration. Extraction decision, COVID, intermaxillary relationship, lower incisor position, and additional appliances were identified as important predictors of treatment duration. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of ML in predicting orthodontic treatment duration using pre-treatment variables.

While the use of crime data has been widely advocated in the literature, its availability is often limited to large urban cities and isolated databases tend not to allow for spatial comparisons. This paper presents an efficient machine learning framework capable of predicting spatial crime occurrences, without using past crime as a predictor, and at a relatively high resolution: the U.S. Census Block Group level. The proposed framework is based on an in-depth multidisciplinary literature review allowing the selection of 188 best-fit crime predictors from socio-economic, demographic, spatial, and environmental data. Such data are published periodically for the entire United States. The selection of the appropriate predictive model was made through a comparative study of different machine learning families of algorithms, including generalized linear models, deep learning, and ensemble learning. The gradient boosting model was found to yield the most accurate predictions for violent crimes, property crimes, motor vehicle thefts, vandalism, and the total count of crimes. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets of crimes reported in 11 U.S. cities demonstrated that the proposed framework achieves an accuracy of 73 and 77% when predicting property crimes and violent crimes, respectively.

Physical-law based models are widely utilized in the aerospace industry. One such use is to provide flight dynamics models for use in flight simulators. For human-in-the-loop use, such simulators must run in real-time. Due to the complex physics of rotorcraft flight, to meet this real-time requirement, simplifications to the underlying physics sometimes have to be applied to the model, leading to model response errors in the predictions compared to the real vehicle. This study investigated whether a machine-learning technique could be employed to provide rotorcraft dynamic response predictions, with the ultimate aim of this model taking over when the physics-based model's accuracy degrades. In the current work, a machine-learning technique was employed to train a model to predict the dynamic response of a rotorcraft. Machine learning was facilitated using a Gaussian Process (GP) non-linear autoregressive model, which predicted the on-axis pitch rate, roll rate, yaw rate and heave responses of a Bo105 rotorcraft. A variational sparse GP model was then developed to reduce the computational cost of implementing the approach on large data sets. It was found that both of the GP models were able to provide accurate on-axis response predictions, particularly when the input contained all four control inceptors and one lagged on-axis response term. The predictions made showed improvement compared to a corresponding physics-based model. The reduction of training data to one-third (rotational axes) or one-half (heave axis) resulted in only minor degradation of the GP model predictions.

Biofilms are congregations of bacteria on a surface, and they grow into obstacles for the functionalities of any device or machinery involves anything biological. Biofilms are developed through a biochemical system known as ‘Quorum Sensing’ that accounts for the chemical signaling that direct either biofilm formation or inhibition. Computational models that relate chemical and structural features of compounds to their performance properties have been used to aide in the discovery of active small molecules for many decades. These quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models are also important for predicting the activity of molecules that can have a range of effectiveness in biological systems. This study uses QSAR methodologies combined with and different machine learning algorithms to predict and assess the performance of several different compounds acting in Quorum Sensing. Through computational probing of the quorum sensing molecular interaction, new design rules can be elucidated for countering biofilms.

Generating executable code from natural language instructions using Large Language Models (LLMs) presents challenges such as semantic understanding and handling ambiguous input. This study focuses on the SantaCoder model and explores the impact of in-context learning on code generation using the MBPP and HumanEval datasets for evaluation. Our results demonstrate significant improvements in three key metrics (defined in the paper): correctness@k, similarity@k and pass@k. To address the problem of selecting optimal demonstrations to maximize correctness and pass rates, we investigate two methods: latent concept selection and random selection in this paper. These findings highlight the effectiveness of in-context learning and the critical role of demonstration selection in enhancing the accuracy, efficiency, and versatility of the SantaCoder model in code generation.

Diabetics or Diabetic Mellitus is a metabolic disorder of blood sugar levels in the human body. It is a major non-communicable disease and involved many serious health risk issues. This disease is rapidly increasing in India. It is a chronic condition and it occurs when a body doesn't produce enough insulin hormone to control the blood sugar level. In this study, different variables have been analyzed that cause the diabetics, and different machine learning algorithms are used to predict whether an unknown sample is diabetes or not. For this purpose, PIMA diabetic detection for Female patients was used. Here 10 different classification model is used for prediction. Finally, the detailed performance analysis of the different variables of the PIMA dataset and also the classification model are discussed.

This article uses machine learning analysis of wearable sensor data to explore the topic of driver differentiation. The study focuses on using detailed analyzes of data collected from wearable sensors to identify patterns that differentiate skilled drivers from inexperienced ones. On a predetermined driving route, participants experienced a variety of driving conditions, including parking, navigating cities, driving on highways and driving through residential neighborhoods. The gathered data was analyzed using machine learning techniques, yielding a classification accuracy of 94% overall. The results highlight important differences in sensor data between inexperienced and experienced drivers, providing insight into possible uses for improving safety protocols, driver education, and personalized feedback systems. The article fosters improvements in traffic safety and driver education by offering insightful information on the link between driver behavior analysis and machine learning.

Sentiment analysis of public opinion expressed in social networks has been developed into various applications, especially in English. Hybrid approaches are potential models for reducing sentiment errors on increasingly complex training data. This paper aims to test some hybrid deep learning models' reliability in some domains' Vietnamese language. Our research questions are to determine whether it is possible to produce hybrid models that outperform the Vietnamese language. Hybrid deep sentiment-analysis learning models are built and tested on reviews and feedback of the Vietnamese language. The hybrid models outperformed the accuracy of Vietnamese sentiment analysis on Vietnamese datasets. It contributes to the growing body of research on Vietnamese NLP, providing insights and directions for future studies in this area.

With the rise of Blockchain technology, the cryptocurrency market has been gaining significant interest. In particular, the number of cryptocurrency traders and the market capitalization have grown tremendously. However, predicting cryptocurrency price is very challenging and difficult due to the high price volatility. In this paper, we propose a classification machine learning approach in order to predict the direction of the market (i.e., if the market is going up or down). We identify key features such as Relative Strength Index (RSI) and Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) to feed the machine learning model. We illustrate our approach through the analysis of Bitcoin close price. We evaluate the proposed approach via different simulations. Particularly, we provide a backtesting strategy. The evaluation results show that the proposed machine learning approach provides buy and sell signals with more than 86% accuracy.

Previous reviews have investigated machine learning (ML) models used to predict the risk of developing preeclampsia but have not described how the ML models are intended to be deployed throughout pregnancy or feature performance. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the existing ML models and their intended deployment patterns and performance along with identified features of high importance. This review used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines. PubMed, Engineering Village, and the Association for Computing Machinery were searched between January and February 2024. A total of 86 studies were found of which 14 were included. Out of 12 studies, eight showed the intent to use the ML model as a single-use, two intended a dual-use, and two intended multiple-use. A total of seven studies listed the features of the highest importance. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure were listed along with mean arterial pressure to be of high importance. Out of four studies intending to use the ML model more than a single-use, three of them were conducted in the years 2023 and 2024, whereas the remaining study is from 2011. No ML model emerged as superior across the subgroups of PE. Utilizing body mass index and either mean arterial pressure or diastolic blood pressure and systolic blood pressure may benefit the performance. The deployment patterns are mainly single use being within the gestation weeks 11+0 to 14+1.

There is only a very short reaction time for people to find the best way out of a building in a fire outbreak. Software applications can be used to assist the rapid evacuation of victims; however, this is an arduous task, which requires an understanding of advanced technologies. Since well-known pathway algorithms (such as, Dijkstra, Bellman-Ford and A*) can lead to serious problems over performance, we decided to make use of deep reinforcement learning techniques. A wide range of strategies including a random initialization of replay buffer and transfer learning were assessed in three projects involving schools of different sizes. The results showed the proposal was viable and that in most cases the performance of transfer learning was superior. In addition, the study raised challenges that had to be faced in the future.

The paper portrays predictive models for dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in an urban lake using common water quality parameters like Temperature, pH, Conductivity and ORP at a time. Data were sampled using three real-time, industry-standard sensors, OPTOD, CTZN, and PHEHT, and then interpolated using the ArcGIS kriging technique. Correlation studies were analyzed through the ML algorithm, the correlation study signified a highly positive correlation between DO and other water parameters and the model was corroborated by R-score in order to create the linear regression model. In addition, an artificial neural network- a machine learning method using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was developed to build a model to predict the do as well. Then, the performance of the models was validated and also the R² accuracy was checked of the predicted data against the actual data. Thus, the appropriateness of the ANN model for the forecasting of investigated attributes is indicated by the fact that the discrepancy between the forecasted and real ANN model is significantly lesser than that of the regression model. However, the model can be used to reveal DO data from unknown urban lake water.

In Southern Asia, Bangladesh is a well-known developing country. Because of COVID-19, we continuously face challenges. Not only can these issues occur beyond economic or health concerns, but they also generate dangerous social problems, such as family abuse. Since the inception of this epidemic, multiple social crimes are looming. Remaining home during the lockout period enhances divorce rates. This research presents a customized forecast of family violence during the COVID-19 outbreak by using machine learning methods. In this paper, we have applied Random Forest, Logistic Regression, and Naive Bayes machine learning classifiers to predict family violence and discovered the feature importance. The performance of the classifiers is evaluated based on accuracy, precision, recall, and F-score. We have employed an oversampling strategy named synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) to solve the imbalance problem of our data. Even, we have tried to compare three machine learning model performances before and after balancing of normalization data. Finally, ROC analyses and confusion matrices were developed and analyzed by using data augmentation. Our proposed system with the random forest classifier performed better with 77% accuracy in comparison with other two machine learning classifiers.

Abstract: Petrol is considered the most common fire accelerant. However, the identification and classification of petrol sources through the years has been proven to be a challenging field in the investigation of fire debris analysis. This research explored the possibility of identifying petrol sources by high field NMR methods accompanied by ML (Machine Learning). The automated identification and classification of petrol brands were achieved for first time based on the ML clas-sification model developed in this research. A hierarchical classification model was constructed using local classifiers to categorize neat or weathered petrol into its sources.

This research investigates the potential benefits of integrating machine learning algorithms and IoT sensors in modern agriculture. The focus is on optimizing crop production and reducing waste through informed decisions about planting, watering, and harvesting crops. The paper discusses the current state of machine learning and IoT in agriculture, highlighting key challenges and opportunities. It also presents experimental results that demonstrate the impact of changing labels on the accuracy of data analysis algorithms. The findings recommend that by analyzing wide-ranging data collected from farms, including real-time data from IoT sensors, farmers can make more informed verdicts about factors that affect crop growth. Eventually, the integration of these technologies can transform modern agriculture by increasing crop yields while minimizing waste. In our studies, we achieve a classification accuracy of 99.59% using the Bayes Net algorithm and 99. 46% using Naïve Bayes Classifier, and Hoeffding Tree algorithms. Our results indicate that we achieved high accuracy results in our experiments in order to increase crop growth.

Advances in computing technology provide an opportunity to grow and develop an effective crop protection system. This study is a new way of diagnosing plant diseases using a deep and convolutional neural network. Deep learning is the strengthened method of machine learning. It uses a neural network that imitates like a human brain and gains certain information. Although powerful, its training process necessitates millions of tagged data points. The study's Methodology consists of three key stages: data acquisition, pre-processing, and Model Building.

In this paper we use quantum machine learning to detect and classify ocular diseases across age related macular degradation, cataract, diabetic, glaucoma, hypertension, and patological myopia categories versus a control group. We analyze fundus imagery from 1000 patients. Early findings indicate there may be benefit in terms of accuracy and loss function minimization of 2.07% and 1.979x respectively compared to a similar method implemented using traditional computers.

Landscapes evolve due to climatic conditions, tectonic activity, geological features, biological activity, and sedimentary dynamics. These processes link geological processes at depth to surface features. Consequently, the study of landscapes can reveal essential information about the geochemical footprint of ore deposits at depth. Advances in satellite imaging and computing power have enabled the creation of large geospatial datasets, the sheer size of which necessitates automated processing. We describe a methodology to enable the automated mapping of landscape pattern domains using machine learning (ML) algorithms. From a freely available Digital Elevation Model, derived data, and sample landclass boundaries provided by domain experts, our algorithm produces a dense map of the model region in Western Australia. Both random forest and support vector machine classification achieve about 98\% classification accuracy with reasonable runtime of 48 minutes on a single core. We discuss computational resources and study the effect of grid resolution. Larger tiles result in a more contiguous map, while smaller tiles result in a more detailed, and at some point, noisy map. Diversity and distribution of landscapes mapped in this study support previous results. In addition, our results are consistent with the geological trends and main basement features in the region.
