Choosing a career path is an important decision in a person’s life and forms the basis for their future direction. It impacts the future career and influences financial stability as well as the person’s well-being. Many people struggle to find out what they are interested in and talented in, making it difficult to choose a fitting career path. Therefore, the decision-making process requires careful consideration, self-reflection, and exploring numerous options. While virtual environments provide an effective way to explore different experiences, virtual reality (VR) offers users immersive interactions with simulated 3D environments. This allows the realistic exploration of different job fields in a virtual environment without being physically present. VR 360-degree videos have been shown to significantly increase job interest among students. The ability to review and refine performance makes VR an ideal tool for career skill development as well as career guidance. In this paper, we present a tool that offers young people virtual career guidance through an immersive VR experience. The study investigates the extent to which performing occupational tasks in a virtual environment influences the career perceptions of young adults and whether it enhances their understanding of professions. In total, 23 teenagers and 8 application experts were involved to assess the teenager’s expectations and the potential of the career guidance tool.

Using numerical simulation method, combined with the pre-branch material characteristics of the measurement results, based on the LS-DYNA software to simulate the branch crushing process, the analysis found that not only the existence of the cutter cutting in the branch destruction process, there is also the cutting of the opposing surface of the bending fracture, with the increase in the speed of the knife rollers, the cutter cutting resistance increases, the cutting resistance reaches 2690 N when the cutter at 2500 r/min, the cutter cutting resistance is the smallest in the cutting simulation at the blade angle of 55°, the blade angle is more suitable for the cutting of the branch. In the cutting simulation under different cutting edge angles, the cutting resistance of the tool is the smallest when the edge angle is 55°, which is 1860 N. This edge angle is more suitable for branch crushing and cutting. Using Fluent software to analyse the airflow characteristics of the crushing device, it was found that with the increase of the knife roller speed, the inlet flow and negative pressure of the crushing chamber are increasing, the speed of 2500 r/min, the inlet flow and negative pressure were 1.92 kg/s and 37.16 Pa, which will be conducive to the feeding of branches, but the speed is too high and it will also lead to the enhancement of the vortex of part of the area in the crushing device, which will affect the feeding of branches and the throwing of the crushed material. affect the feeding of branches and the throwing out of crushed materials, and finally determined the speed range of the crushing knife roller is 1800 ~ 2220 r/min. Based on ANSYS/Model module modal analysis of the crushing knife roller, the knife roller of the first six orders of the intrinsic frequency and vibration pattern, crushing knife roller of the lowest order of the modal intrinsic frequency of 137.42 Hz, much larger than the crushing knife roller operating frequency of 37 Hz, the machine will not resonate during operation.

As an active device, air source heat pumps (ASHP) are widely used for heating and cooling in buildings. However, in cold regions, their efficiency decreases, and frost formation becomes a significant issue during winter. This paper proposes a new scheme that couples air source heat pumps with passive heating. By using software simulations and mathematical models, the new scheme is compared to traditional ASHP systems to analyze its heating performance in rural homes during winter in China’s cold regions. According to the simulation and calculation analysis, on the coldest day of winter, the coupling scheme can provide approximately 99.41kWh of heat to the interior, surpassing the 86.67kWh required to maintain an indoor temperature of 20℃. The system’s power consumption is 36.96 kWh, which is 66.88% lower than that of traditional heat pump heating. The study shows that a coupled system of air source heat pumps and passive heating has better heating performance in cold regions. By incorporating phase change materials and heat storage media to address the shortage of solar energy at night, the system can meet the heating needs throughout the entire day.

As technology advances, the field of electrical and computer engineering continuously demands the introduction of innovative new tools and methodologies to facilitate effective learning and comprehension of fundamental concepts. This research addresses an identified gap in technology-augmented education capabilities and researches the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) technology with real-time electronic circuit simulation to enable and enhance the visualization of non-observable concepts such as voltage distribution and current flow within these circuits. In this paper, we describe the development of our immersive educational platform, which makes understanding these abstract concepts intuitive and engaging. This research also involved the design and development of a VR-based circuit simulation environment. By leveraging VR’s immersive capabilities, our system enables users to physically interact with electronic components, observe the flow of electrical signals, and manipulate circuit parameters in real-time. Through this immersive experience, learners can gain a deeper understanding of fundamental electronic principles, transcending the limitations of traditional two-dimensional diagrams and equations. Furthermore, this research focuses on the implementation of advanced and novel visualization techniques within the VR environment for non-observable electrical and electromagnetic properties, providing users with a clearer and more intuitive understanding of electrical circuit concepts. Examples include color-coded pathways for current flow and dynamic voltage gradient visualization. Additionally, real-time data representation and graphical overlays are researched and integrated to offer users insights into the dynamic behavior of circuits, allowing for better analysis and troubleshooting.

Repetitive elements, often referred to as selfish genes, pose significant challenges to genome assembly and read mapping in bioinformatics. These elements can replicate within the genome without providing functional benefits to the host organism, leading to complexities in accurate genome analysis. This study presents a simulation-based approach to illustrate the impact of repetitive elements on read mapping accuracy. By comparing genome sequences with and without repetitive elements, we demonstrate how these selfish genes create ambiguities and errors in read alignment. The findings underscore the importance of developing advanced bioinformatics tools aligned with artificial intelligence to mitigate the effects of repetitive sequences and improve the reliability of genomic analyses.

While there are software tools available for assisting to conduct the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), such as OpenLCA, these tools lack integration with process design, simulation and optimization software. As LCA has critical role in sustainable product design, it is presented in this work a platform called EMSO_OLCA, which integrates the LCA provided by OpenLCA into the Environment for Modeling, Simulation, and Optimization (EMSO). EMSO_OLCA incorporates a database of environmental impact assessment methodologies from OpenLCA and aligns to the principles of LCA outlined in ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. Validation tests were conducted to compare the results obtained by the LCA of sugarcane ethanol using OpenLCA and EMSO_OLCA, revealing a high level of agreement. The average relative error was 0.045%, indicating a negligible discrepancy between the tools. Besides, it took only 0.3 seconds for calculation, which is desirable for using with process systems engineering tools. A second case study was applied to a steam and bioelectricity production from the combustion of sugarcane bagasse and straw in a combined heat and power system. The results show the integration of LCA with simulation and sensitivity analysis tools, thus contributing for supporting sustainable decision-making processes. EMSO_OLCA bridges the gap between LCA and process engineering, enabling a holistic approach to sustainability, design and implementation of environmentally friendly solutions.

In general, during emergencies, healthcare is provided by tents and temporary structures that do not consider the environmental and social impact of the structure as a first term, in favor of swift response. The resultant construction intended as a temporary solution often persists long-term. This paper aims to analyze an alternative and innovative modular structure designed as a transitory solution in emergency and everyday life. In the first part of the paper, the conceptual framework, and the preliminary design for the new approach to basic non-conventional sanitary spaces are described, by investigating the benefits of a safe space as a generator space for care services and community. In the second part, the technological requirements of the system, its energy efficiency, and environmental impact are analyzed.

This study addresses the prevalent gap between formal and informal architectural methodologies in software engineering. Recognizing the potential of informal architecture artifacts in analytical processes, we introduce a groundbreaking methodology that efficiently transforms these informal components into structured formal models. This method facilitates a deeper understanding and utilization of informal diagrams and enhances analytical capabilities through graph analysis techniques. By leveraging user-friendly tools like Draw.io, the methodology democratizes the modeling process, making sophisticated architectural analyses accessible to a broader spectrum of professionals without requiring deep expertise in formal methods. The innovative aspects of this methodology lie in its ability to streamline the transformation process, significantly improving both the efficiency and effectiveness of model creation and analysis. These enhancements are demonstrated through a practical application involving a sample architecture diagram, where the resulting model is thoroughly analyzed using advanced graph analysis tools like Python's NetworkX library and Neo4j. This approach bridges the theoretical and practical divides in software architecture and sets a new standard for integrating informal artifacts into systematic engineering workflows. In addition, considerations for Artificial Intelligence developments are discussed.

Subgrid scale models for unresolved turbulent fluxes are investigated with a focus on combustion for space propulsion applications. An extension to the gradient model is proposed, introducing a dependency on the local burning regime. The dynamic behavior of the model's coefficients is investigated, and scaling laws are studied. The discussed models are validated using a DNS database of a high-pressure turbulent fuel-rich methane-oxygen diffusion flame. The operating point and turbulence characteristics are selected to resemble those of modern combustors for space propulsion applications to support the future usage of the devised model in this context.

The rapid integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is transforming the traditional electrical grid into a {\em Smart Grid}. Smart grids enable two-way communication and improved monitoring and control between utilities and customers. However, due to its heterogeneous nature, public exposure, and weak security at low-powered devices, the Smart Grid has vulnerabilities to various malicious threats, adversaries, and cyber attacks, which may affect cost and service availability. Additionally, when the systems' confidentiality, integrity, or availability are compromised, the resulting fallout can threaten national security and have cascading effects on human lives. Given the extreme consequences of an attack, smart-grid technology must be thoroughly tested for correct operation and security {\em before} it is deployed. As a result, vulnerability testing of smart grids, not only for correctness but for security purposes, has been the subject of numerous studies by academics, government agencies, and private companies. This paper reviews the vulnerabilities associated with the smart grid and spotlights simulation as the vulnerability testing methodology conducted in recent pertinent research works. It also presents various security aspects of the smart grid, including grid applications, system and network infrastructure and components, cyber threats and attacks, simulation, and different mitigation techniques. Finally, we analyze the gaps in the current research works, focusing on simulation. We briefly present a real-time simulation testbed that mimics customer behaviour and integrates hardware in the loop to apply attack methods, analyze vulnerabilities and risk mitigation associated with the smart grid system, and propose future work to improve the current framework.

The paper outlines a methodology for developing a model to estimate energy consumption in electric vehicles (EVs). The most robust validation indicators were exhibited by an artificial intelligence method, specifically neural networks. Within this framework, two predictive models for EV energy consumption were developed for winter and summer conditions, based on actual driving cycles. Such models hold particular significance for microscale road analyses. The resultant model for test data in summer conditions demonstrates validation indicators with an R2 of 86% and an MSE of 1.4, while for winter conditions, the values are 89% and 2.8, respectively, confirming its high precision. The paper also presents exemplary applications of the developed models, utilizing both real and simulated microscale data. The results obtained and the presented methodology can be especially advantageous for decision-makers in city road management and infrastructure planners, aiding both cognitive understanding and better planning of charging infrastructure networks.

Daylighting has been widely adopted in recent years due to its potential to improve the indoor environment in terms of visual comfort and energy-saving. One of the energy-saving techniques for energy-efficient buildings is the integration of louver systems. Louvers are considered more efficient for providing daylight in the interior as compared to other daylighting systems. Here, this paper presents the design of a louver system for conducting energy simulations for lighting and cooling requirements in office spaces. The simulation results indicate that the use of louvers in different opening configurations can lead to energy savings, particularly in the lighting aspect. The louver system in office spaces with a 50% louver opening leads to 27.0% energy savings. Further, the results are presented for different louver openings to calculate the lighting and cooling energy savings. The overall performance of the system is better in terms of providing consistent daylight, which eventually improves energy saving.

Matrix asphalt material has poor road performance, which is improved by adding polymer modified agents. The original asphalt material experiment research has a certain limitation in that it cannot truly expose the mechanism and influence of modifiers on asphalt materials. To explore the gain effect of the modified agent on the asphalt material's road performance, the molecular dynamic simulation technology is used to explain its mechanism in the micro dimension. The three parameters of the free volume score, radial distribution function and average directional shift diffusion coefficient are analysed to improve the performance of the modifier on asphalt material, an exploration of the microdimension shows that the amount of SBS modifiers is 6% and the amount of rubber modified asphalt material is 22%. The improvement of materials is better than that of rubber modifiers.

Compressed gas storage of hydrogen has emerged as the preferred choice for fuel cell vehicle man- ufacturers, as well as for various applications like road transport, and aviation. However, designers face increasing challenges in designing safe and efficient composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) for hydrogen storage. One challenge lies in the development of precise software that con- sider a multitude of factors associated with the filament winding process. These factors include layer thickness, stacking sequence, and the development of particularly robust models for the dome region. Another challenge is the formulation of predictive behavior and failure models to ensure that COPVs have optimal structural integrity. The present study offers an exploration of numerical methods used in modeling COPVs, aiming to enhance our understanding of their performance characteristics. The methods examined include finite element analysis in Abaqus, involving conventional shell elements, continuum shell elements, three-dimensional solid elements, and specialized homogenization tech- niques for multilayered composite pressure vessels. Through rigorous comparisons with type-III pressure vessels from the literature, the research highlights the most suitable choice for simulating COPVs and their practicality. Finally, we propose a new design for type-IV hydrogen composite pressure vessels using one explored method, paving the way for future developments in this critical field.

Using metaheuristics, such as the Evolutionary Algorithm (EA), within control structures is a realistic approach for certain optimal control problems. Their role is often predicting the optimal control values over a prediction horizon using a process model (PM). The big computational effort sometimes causes problems. Our work addresses a new issue: whether a machine learning (ML) algorithm could “learn” the optimal behaviour of the couple (EA, PM). A positive answer is given by proposing datasets apprehending this couple's optimal behaviour and appropriate ML models. Following a design procedure, a number of closed-loop simulations will provide the sequences of optimal control and state values, which are collected and aggregated in a data structure. For each sampling period, datasets are extracted from the aggregated data. The ML algorithm experiencing these datasets will produce a set of regression functions. Replacing the EA predictor with the ML model, new simulations are carried out, proving that the state evolution is almost identical. The execution time decreases drastically because the PM’s numerical integrations are totally avoided. The performance index equals the best-known value. In different case studies, the ML models succeeded in capturing the optimal behaviour of the couple (EA, PM) and yielded efficient controllers.

Abstract: The population issue has been increasingly urgent in China in recent years. Fertility desire is an essential component of fertility research. Studies on fertility desire mainly contain two aspects: socio-economic structure and individual family[1]. The psychological structure of individuals in individual families is the primary factor of fertility desire. Based on the parasocial relationship theory, this study analyzed the changes in real behavioral intention achieved by players through the identification and attachment to avatars while constructing parasocial relationships[2]. The results indicate that character attachment can significantly enhance the variables of game concentration and player self-identity, actively mediates parasocial emotions and parasocial cognition, and ultimately increases fertility desire. As a theoretical contribution, this study provides a comprehensive interpretation of the psychology of Chinese players in a Simulation Game and explores the theoretical connections among role attachment, role identity, and parasocial relationships in virtual game players.

With an explosion of data in the nearly every domain, from physical and environmental sciences to econometrics and even social science, we have entered a golden era of time-domain data science. In addition to ever increasing data volumes and varieties of time-series, there's a plethora of techniques available to analyses them. Unsurprisingly, machine learning approaches are very popular. In environmental sciences (ranging from climate studies to space weather/solar physics), machine learning (ML )and deep learning (DL) approaches complement the traditional data assimilation approaches. In solar and astrophysics, multiwavelength time-series or lightcurves along with observations of other messengers like gravitational waves provide a treasure trove of time-domain data for ML/DL approaches for modeling and forecasting. In this regard, deep learning algorithms such as recurrent neural networks (RNNs) should prove extremely powerful for forecasting as it has in several other domains. Such methods agnostic of the physics can only predict transient flares that are represented in the original distribution trained on (eg. coloured noise fluctuations) and not special, isolated episodes (eg. a one-off outburst like a major coronal mass ejection) potentially distinguishing them. Therefore it is vital to test robustness of these techniques ; here we attempt to make a small contribution to this by exploring sensitivity of RNNs with some rudimentary experiments. We test the performance of a very successful class of RNNs, the Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) algorithms with simulated lightcurves. As an example, we focus on univariate forecasting of time-series (or lightcurves) characteristic certain variable astrophysical objects (eg. active galactic nuclei or AGN). Specifically, we explore the sensitivity of training and test losses to key parameters of the LSTM network and data characteristics namely gaps and complexity measured in terms of number of Fourier components. We find that typically, the performances of LSTMs are better for pink or flicker noise type sources. The key parameters on which performance is dependent are batch size for LSTM and the gap percentage of the lightcurves. While a batch size of $10-30$ seems optimal, the most optimal test and train losses are under $10 \%$ of missing data for both periodic and random gaps in pink noise. The performance is far worse for red noise. This compromises detectability of transients. Thus, we show that generative models (time-series simulations) are excellent guides for use of RNN-LSTMs in building forecasting systems

Plasmonics is the study of resonant oscillations of free electrons in metals caused by incident electromagnetic radiation. Surface plasmons can focus and steer light on the subwavelength scale. Apart from metals, plasmonic phenomena can be observed in soft matter systems such as electrolytes where resonant charge oscillations can be induced for ions in solution. Due to their larger mass, they are plasmon-active in a lower frequency regime and on a larger wavelength scale. Spatial confinement allows increasingly strong charge interactions and gives rise to nonlocality or spatial dispersion effects. These effects manifest as additional longitudinal propagation modes and are known to cause plasmonic broadening and resonance shifts in metal nanostructures. We derive and discuss the nonlocal optical response of ionic plasmons using a hydrodynamic, two-fluid model in a planar homogeneous three-layer system with electrolyte-dielectric interfaces. Studying such systems enables us to identify and understand plasmonic phenomena in biological and chemical systems.

This study rolls out a robust framework relevant for simulation studies through the Generalised Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (GARCH) model using the rugarch package. The package is thoroughly investigated, and novel findings are identified for improved and effective simulations. The focus of the study is to provide necessary simulation steps for volatility estimation that involve "background (optional), defining the aim, research questions, method of implementation, and summarised conclusion". The method of implementation is a workflow that includes writing the code, setting the seed, setting the true parameters a priori, data generation process and performance assessment through meta-statistics. This novel, easy-to-understand steps are demonstrated on financial returns using illustrative Monte Carlo simulation with empirical verification. Among the findings, the study shows that regardless of the arrangement of the seed values, the efficiency and consistency of an estimator generally remain the same as the sample size increases. The study also derived a new and flexible true-parameter-recovery measure which can be used by researchers to determine the level of recovery of the true parameter by the MCS estimator. It is anticipated that the outcomes of this study will be broadly applicable in finance, with intuitive appeal in other areas, for volatility estimation.

Currently, there are different types of technology for the production of electricity that use various energy sources, this causes the establishment of generation centers that provide from a small amount to tens of megawatts of electrical energy. These centers are built to supply electricity to nearby loads through networks integrated into a large electrical system or in isolation with their electrical system. The technological evolution, the different energy sources, and the generation centers close to the consumers entail what has been called a distributed generation (DG), the DG carries with it aspects that need to be analyzed. In this paper, the impact of wind generation on the medium voltage energy distribution network is studied, it was determined that the addition to the distribution network of power by wind turbines less than the transmission center does not produce an impact on the network. Simulated results obtained using SIMULINK and DIgSILENT are presented and discussed.

The heritage of ancient buildings is an important part of the world's history and culture, which has an extremely rich historical-cultural value and artistic research value. Beijing has a large number of palace ancient buildings, and because of the age of their construction, many of them have problems of varying degrees of peeling and mold on the inner surfaces of the envelope. To solve the problems of the damp and moldy interior of palace buildings, a mathematical model of indoor heat and moisture transfer was established based on a wooden palace ancient building in Beijing. Through the indoor mold distribution validation model, the effects of outdoor humidity, soil moisture, wall humidity, and other factors on the indoor heat and moisture transfer of ancient buildings were simulated and analyzed by using the control variables method. The results showed that the molds were distributed at the indoor corners and floors, and the simulation of indoor humidity match the measured humidity. Thus, the simulation results were consistent with the actual situation. The variable trend of the relative humidity of the indoor environment with the outdoor humidity is inconsistent from plane to plane, i.e. it increases or remains constant with the increase of the outdoor humidity. The indoor ambient relative humidity increased with increasing the wall humidity. And the indoor average temperature is 23.3 ℃ and indoor relative humidity ranged between 90.9 % to 92.44 %. Soil moisture and wall humidity were the main factors affecting the indoor environmental relative humidity.

Copper indium gallium diselenide, Cu(In,Ga)Se2, thin-film of about 1.2 μm has been deposited on Mo coated soda lime glass by thermal co-evaporation of Cu, In, Ga, and Se sources. The thin film CIGS was characterized by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and identified the elemental composition of Cu, In, Ga and Se in the film. A CIGS device was completed by the successive deposition of multiple layers; SLG/Mo/CIGS/CdS/ZnO/ITO which yielded the efficiency of 11%. External spectroscopic ellipsometry (ex-situ SE) was performed on the completed device and the device analysis was performed. Starting with the parameterized complex dielectric functions of the individual component layers, SE analysis was performed using a step-wise procedure that ranks the fitting parameters according to their ability to reduce the mean square error (MSE) of the fit. The resulting layer thicknesses and dielectric functions were used to simulate the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the device assuming complete active layer collection. Electronic losses were identified by comparison of simulated EQE with the measured EQE. The ultimate goal of this work is the optimization of narrow band-gap CIGS-related solar cells for the bottom layer in tandem devices.

This work deals with the evaluation of adhesive single-lap joints using ultrasonic guided waves. An adhesive bonded lap joint can be modelled as a three-layer system made up of two adherents and an adhesive. The propagation of guided waves in the joint is developed from matrix formulations. The behavior of the different guided wave modes that propagate in the bonded region is characterized and it is found that their relative amplitudes can be estimated based on the properties of the incoming wave that propagates in the non-bonded region. It was verified that the excitation of these modes is ruled by the degree in which the shapes of both modes match each other. A 3D simulation of two aluminium bonded plates using 500 kHz ultrasonic transducers in a pitch and catch configuration was implemented using the Matlab k-Wave toolbox. Scattering effects due to some produced defects located in the bond line of the lap joints were simulated. Experimental setup with some artificial defects produced in the aluminum joints were used in order to compare with the simulated. Qualitative agreement was observed for the two approaches. The observed deviation can be due to the different characteristics of the experimental and simulated defects.

A wave is an energy that can propagate with a medium, the propagation of a wave moves with respect to time by carrying energy that moves with velocity per unit of time. Sea waves are one of the propagating wave problems that are broken down to produce wave propagation with a relatively inhomogeneous minimum amplitude and speed of sea waves which have their own difficulties in solving them numerically. This study aims to analyze the stability of wave propagation of submerged breakwaters using the Boundary Element Method. This research will approximate the boundary discretization of the breakwater domain and then combine it with the Finite Element Method in determining the moving elements of the velocity of fluid flow through a porous submerged breakwater. This study varies the magnitude of the incoming propagation velocity and the influence of the breakwater distance. The results of this study indicate that the resulting minimal wave assuming v = 1 m/s and the breakwater distance of s = 20 m gives a wave reflection with a minimum wave speed and amplitude of 0.12515 m

In this paper, we propose a modeling method based on peridynamics for ductile fracture at high temperatures. A thermoelastic coupling model combining peridynamics and classical continuum mechanics is used to limit the peridynamics calculations to the failure region of a given structure, thereby reducing computational costs. Then, a plastic constitutive model of peridynamic bonds is developed to capture the ductile-fracture process of the structure. Furthermore, an iterative algorithm for ductile-fracture calculation is presented. Finally, several numerical examples are shown. Particularly, the fracture processes of a superalloy structure under 800℃ and 900℃ environments are simulated and compared with experimental results. Our comparisons show that the crack modes captured by the proposed model are similar to experimental observations, which verifies the validity of the proposed model.

Enhancement in chemisorption is one of the active research areas in carbon materials. To remedy the thermally degraded chemisorption at high temperatures, we report a comprehensive study of kink structures in free-standing monoatomic carbon nanowires upon heating. Our Monte Carlo simulation considers multi-monoatomic carbon chains laterally interacted by the Van der Waals force. Our study reveals that the carbon nanowires maintain their linearity regardless of chain length at low temperatures, but this is not the case at high temperatures. Disordered kink structure is observed in the short carbon chains, especially above the Peierls transition temperature. The severe kink structure might increase the possibility of attaching negatively charged atoms, thereby contributing to the development of next-generation materials for chemisorption at high temperatures. We have also provided an important inspection that any physical property of the finite-length carbon chain predicted by ab-initio calculation should reconsider the atomic rearrangement due to the thermal instability at high temperatures.

The interaction between hard-core soft-shell colloids are characterized by having two characteristic distances: one associated with the penetrable, soft corona and another one corresponding to the impenetrable core. Isotropic core-softened potentials with two characteristic length scales have long been applied to understand the properties of such colloids. Those potentials usually show waterlike anomalies, and recent findings have indicated the existence of multiple anomalous regions in the 2D limit under compression, while in 3D only one anomalous region is observed. In this direction, we perform Molecular Dynamics simulations to unveil the details about the structural behavior in the quasi-2D limit of a core-softened colloid. The fluid was confined between highly repulsive solvophobic walls, and the behavior at distinct wall separation and colloid density was analyzed. Our results indicated a straight relation between the 2D or 3D-like behavior and the layers separation. We can relate that if the system behaves as independent 2D-layers, it will have a 2D-like behavior. However, for some separations the layers are connected, with colloids hopping from one layer to another – having then a 3D-like structural behavior. Those findings fill the gap in the depiction of the anomalous behavior from 2D to 3D.

ZnO was synthesized by Sol gel method using zinc nitrate as precursor at different calcination temperatures. Nucleation of ZnO crystallites and their growth with rise in temperature was observed. Exciton bands and lattice imperfections affected the absorption spectra. The decrease in band gap with temperature was due to the formation of defect energy levels. Phonon assisted non-radiative transitions caused broadening of the peaks. The possibility of tuning the band gap of ZnO by changing the temperature was explored. Simulation studies showed transition to single phase with rise in temperature.

There is increasing interest in automating train operations of mainline services, e.g. to increase network capacity. Automatic train operation (ATO) is already achieved by several pilot projects, but not implemented on a large scale. Before the general introduction of new or adapted technologies can have a transformative effect on the operation of such a complex system as train operation on mainlines, they have to pass functional, interoperability and performance tests. A virtual preliminary analysis is one way to ensure a smooth as well as safe introduction and implementation. This paper aims to present an approach that applies to the performance testing of ATO systems. Therefore, methods and test standards for technologies enabling automatic operation in other transport sectors are reviewed. The main findings have been adapted, transformed and combined to be used as a general strategy for virtual performance testing in the railway sector. Specifically, universal performance indicators, namely punctuality, accuracy, energy consumption, safety and comfort, are presented. A layer model for scenario description is adapted from the automotive sector, as well as the definition of different scenario types. Lastly, factors that can influence the performance of an ATO algorithm are identified. To demonstrate the developed approach, a straightforward investigation of a case study is conducted using a microscopic train simulator in combination with an ATO algorithm.

A multiscale modeling concept for numerical simulation of multiphysics turbulent flow utilizing map-based advection is described. The approach is outlined with emphasis on its theoretical foundations and physical interpretations in order to establish the context for subsequent presentation of the associated numerical algorithms and the results of validation studies. The model formulation is a synthesis of existing methods, modified and extended in order to obtain a qualitatively new capability. The salient feature of the approach is that time advancement of the flow is fully resolved both spatially and temporally, albeit with modeled advancement processes restricted to one spatial dimension. This one-dimensional advancement is the basis of a bottom-up modeling approach in which three-dimensional space is discretized into under-resolved mesh cells, each of which contains an instantiation of the modeled one-dimensional advancement. Filtering is done only to provide inputs to a pressure correction that enforces continuity and to obtain mesh-scale-filtered outputs if desired. The one-dimensional advancement, the pressure correction, and coupling of one-dimensional instantiations using a Lagrangian implementation of mesh-resolved volume fluxes is sufficient to advance the three-dimensional flow without time advancing coarse-grained equations, a feature that motivates the designation of the approach as autonomous microscale evolution (AME). In this sense, the one-dimensional treatment is not a closure because there are no unclosed terms to evaluate. However, the approach is additionally suitable for use as a subgrid-scale closure of existing large-eddy-simulation methods. The potential capabilities and limitations of both of these implementations of the approach are assessed conceptually and with reference to demonstrated capabilities of related methods.

The incorporation of unmanned aircraft terminal operations into the scope of Detect and Avoid systems necessitates analysis of the safety performance of those systems—principally, an assessment of how well those systems prevent loss of well clear from and collision with other aircraft. This type of analysis has typically been conducted by Monte Carlo simulation with synthetic, statistically representative encounters between aircraft drawn from an appropriate encounter model. While existing encounter models include terminal airspace classes, none explicitly represents the structure expected while engaged in terminal operations, e.g., aircraft in a traffic pattern. The work described herein is an initial model of such operations, scoped at this time specifically for assessment of unmanned aircraft landings and encounters with other aircraft either landing or taking off. The model shares the Bayesian network foundation of other MIT Lincoln Laboratory encounter models but tailors those networks to address structured terminal operations, i.e., correlations between trajectories and the airfield and each other. This initial model release is intended to elicit feedback from the standards-writing community.

For better understanding the corrosion and corrosion products behavior in the primary circuit of lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) coolant reactor, the concentration distribution of soluble impurities and the transport of solid particles are investigated through finite-element method. An axisymmetric model of the primary circuit of LBE reactor was constructed to accelerate the calculation the thermal hydraulic filed of circuit. The saturation concentration of solute Fe, Cr and Ni in LBE coolant are identified through the equilibrium of their oxides and PbO. And the very different saturation concentrations of Fe/Cr/Ni in LBE will lead to significant element selective corrosion. The migration of solid oxides particles in the primary circuit is also investigated by the Euler-Lagrange tracing model. The simulation shows that driving force for the movement of particles >100 μm is buoyancy, which lets particles float on a free surface, while particles <10 μm tend to suspend in coolant. However, the behavior of particles also depends on the formation position, the particles formed above the core have the high possibility of re-entering in the core.

The once-held wisdom of the supreme efficiency of one-way streets has been gradually sup-planted by the perceived sustainability of two-way streets in the design of livable cities that prioritizes the safety of pedestrians and thriving of local businesses. However, it is rarely dis-cussed on whether one-way street conversions have truly improved the long-term traffic effi-ciencies on urban street networks, as conflating socioeconomic factors such as vehicular popula-tion growth and induced travel demand may render empirical analysis inconclusive. In this study, microscopic traffic simulations implemented on SUMO platform was performed to ana-lyze the effect of street conversion in Downtown Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. This approach can control and standardize travel demand in both one-way and two-way street networks, and would therefore give a fairer evaluation by precluding all socioeconomic factors. It was found that one-way streets do not necessarily improve the traffic efficiency of the network, as it is very dependent on the traffic scenario evolution over time. One-way streets perform better at the on-set of traffic congestion due to its higher capacity, but on average, the 4-fold longer travel times that made it harder to clear traffic by getting vehicles to their destinations compared to two-way streets. As time progresses, congestion in one-way streets may become twice as worse compared to two-way streets. This study may contribute to a more holistic assessment of traffic circulation plan designed for smart and livable cities

The study of the influence of the nanoparticle volume fraction and aspect ratio of microchannels on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids in microchannels is important in the optimal design of heat dissipation systems with high heat flux. In this work, the computational fluid dynamics method was adopted to simulate the flow and heat transfer characteristics of two types of water–Al2O3 nanofluids with two different volume fractions and five types of microchannel heat sinks with different aspect ratios. Results showed that increasing the nanoparticle volume fraction reduced the average temperature of the liquid–solid heat transfer surface and thereby improved the heat transfer capacity of the nanofluids. Meanwhile, the increase of the nanoparticle volume fraction led to a considerable increase in the pumping power of the system. Changing the aspect ratio of the microchannel effectively improved the heat transfer capacity of the heat sink. Moreover, increasing the aspect ratio effectively reduced the average temperature of the heating surface of the heat sink without significantly increasing the flow resistance loss. When the aspect ratio exceeded 30, the heat transfer coefficient did not increase with the increase of the aspect ratio. The results of this work may offer guiding significance for the optimal design of high heat flux microchannel heat sinks.

There is a case about a system comprising two queues of M/M(a)/1/K with a due date with FCFS service policy in each queue. Using the methods of simulation and mathematical analysis, the solution diagrams were illustrated for the fixed due date Ɵ=1 second at the phase of due date up to the commencement of the service, limited capacity K₁=5 and K₂=4, for both scenarios of different service management rate resulted. For the analytical solution, first, a SAN model from the system was created in the Mobius tool. For simulation, a java discrete systems simulation code was used. Adjustment of the initial values, selection of the scenarios for service rate, the number of the consumers in the simulation, etc. were all carried out in the simulation code.

Hands-on type training of Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) is characterized by assisted application and combination of multiple simulation software tools and data. In this paper, we present recent experiences in establishing a cloud-based infrastructure to enable remote use of dedicated commercial and open access simulation tools during an interactive on-line training event. In the first part, we summarize the hardware and software requirements and illustrate how these have been met using cloud hardware services, a simulation platform environment, a suitable communication channel, common workspaces and more. The second part of the article focuses (i) on the requirements for suitable on-line hands-on training material and (ii) on details of some of the approaches taken. Eventually, the practical experiences made during three consecutive on-line training courses held in September 2020 with 35 nominal participants each, are discussed in detail.

The increasingly used approach of combining different simulation software in testing of automated driving systems (ADS) increases the need for potential and convenient software designs. Recently developed co-simulation platforms (CSP) provide the possibility to cover the high demand on testing kilometers for ADS by combining vehicle simulation software (VSS) with traffic flow simulation software (TFSS) environments. The emphasis on the demand of testing kilometers is not enough to choose a suitable CSP. The complexity level of the used vehicle, object, sensors and environment models is essential for valid and representative simulation results. Choosing a suitable CSP raises the question of how the test procedures should be defined and constructed and what the relevant test scenarios are. Parameters of the ADS, the environments, objects, sensors in VSS as well as traffic parameters in TFSS can be used to define and generate test scenarios. In order to generate a large number of scenarios in a systematic and automated way, suitable and appropriate software designs are required. In this paper we present a software design for CSP based on the Model-View-Controller (MVC) design pattern and implementation of a complex CSP for virtual testing of ADS. Based on this design, an implementation of a CSP is presented using the VSS from IPG Automotive called CarMaker and the TFSS from PTV Group called Vissim. The results have shown that the presented CSP design and the implementation of the co-simulation can be used to generate relevant scenarios for testing of ADS.

The paper introduces a valuable new description of fatigue strength in relation to material properties and thus a new perspective on the overall understanding of the fatigue process. Namely, a relation between the endurance limits and the accompanying values of the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for various metallic materials has been discovered by means of a multiscale approach for fatigue simulation. Based on the uniqueness of the relation, there is a strong indication that it is feasible to relate the endurance limit to the CRSS, and not to the ultimate strength as often done in the past.

History is often thought to be dull and boring – where large numbers of facts are memorized for passing exams. But the past informs the present and future, especially in delineating the context surrounding specific events that, in turn, help provide a deeper understanding of their causes and implications. Scientific progress (whether incremental or breakthroughs) is built upon prior work. Chronological examination of computational chemistry’s evolution reveals the existence of major “epochs” (e.g., transition from semi-empirical methods to first principles calculations), and the centrality of key ideas (e.g., Schrodinger equation and Born Oppenheimer approximation) in potentiating progress in the field. The longstanding question of whether computing power (both capacity and speed) or theoretical insights play a more important role in advancing computational chemistry was examined by taking into account the field’s development holistically. Specifically, availability of large amount of computing power at declining cost, and advent of graphics processing unit (GPU) powered parallel computing are enabling tools for solving hitherto intractable problems. On the other hand, this essay argues (using Born Oppenheimer approximation as an example) that theoretical insights’ role in unlocking problems through simple (but insightful) assumptions is often overlooked. Collectively, the essay should be useful as a primer for appreciating major development periods in computational chemistry, from which counterfactual questions illuminate the relative importance of theoretical insights and advances in computer science in moving the field forward.

Lassa virus (LASV) is responsible for a type of acute viral haemorrhagic fever referred to as Lassa fever. Lack of adequate treatment and preventive measures against LASV resulted in a high mortality rate in its endemic regions. In this study, a multi-epitope vaccine was designed using immunoinformatics as a prophylactic agent against the virus. Following a rigorous assessment, the vaccine was built using T-cell (N_CTL=8 and N_HTL=6) and B-cell (N_LBL=4) epitopes from each LASV-derived protein with suitable linkers and adjuvant. The physicochemistry, immunogenic potency and safeness of the designed vaccine (~68 kDa) were assessed. In addition, chosen CTL and HTL epitopes of our vaccine showed 97.37% worldwide population coverage. Besides, disulphide engineering also improved the stability of the chimeric vaccine. Molecular docking of our vaccine protein with toll-like receptor (TLR2) showed binding efficiency followed by dynamic simulation for stable interaction. Furthermore, higher levels of cell-mediated immunity and rapid antigen clearance were suggested by immune simulation and repeated-exposure simulation, respectively. Finally, the optimized codons were used in in silico cloning to ensure higher expression within E. coli K12 bacterium. With further assessment both in vitro and in vivo, we believe that our proposed peptide-vaccine would be potential immunogen against Lassa fever.

Physical-law based models are widely utilized in the aerospace industry. One such use is to provide flight dynamics models for use in flight simulators. For human-in-the-loop use, such simulators must run in real-time. Due to the complex physics of rotorcraft flight, to meet this real-time requirement, simplifications to the underlying physics sometimes have to be applied to the model, leading to model response errors in the predictions compared to the real vehicle. This study investigated whether a machine-learning technique could be employed to provide rotorcraft dynamic response predictions, with the ultimate aim of this model taking over when the physics-based model's accuracy degrades. In the current work, a machine-learning technique was employed to train a model to predict the dynamic response of a rotorcraft. Machine learning was facilitated using a Gaussian Process (GP) non-linear autoregressive model, which predicted the on-axis pitch rate, roll rate, yaw rate and heave responses of a Bo105 rotorcraft. A variational sparse GP model was then developed to reduce the computational cost of implementing the approach on large data sets. It was found that both of the GP models were able to provide accurate on-axis response predictions, particularly when the input contained all four control inceptors and one lagged on-axis response term. The predictions made showed improvement compared to a corresponding physics-based model. The reduction of training data to one-third (rotational axes) or one-half (heave axis) resulted in only minor degradation of the GP model predictions.

The present work aims at the comprehensive application of stochastic and optimization tools with the support of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) through a case study in a logistics process for electronic goods; simulation and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) are applied for this purpose. The problem to be evaluated is to define an optimal distribution cost for products shipped to wholesale customers located in different cities in Mexico from a manufacturing plant in Tijuana, Mexico. The factors under study are the product allocation for each distribution center, finished good inventory level and on time deliveries, which are supposed to be significant to get the objective. The methodology applied for this problem considers the design of a discrete event simulation model to represent virtually the real life of logistics process, which is considered a complex system due to different activities are interrelated to carry it out. This model is used to execute the different experiments proposed by the RSM. The results obtained from simulation model were analyzed with the RSM to define the mathematical model that allows identifying the parameters of the factors in order to optimize the process. The findings prove how the ICT facilitate the application of stochastic tools with the purpose of process optimization.

Network Simulators (NS) is typically used to study services and applications in complex scenarios due to the infeasibility of deploying real testbeds. This is the case of Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) which can be extensively used in emergency situations or to gather information without infraestructure. An important factor to get realiable results in the MANETs’ simulations is the wireless channel module of NSs. In this report, we explain how thw wireless channel is implemented in NS-3 and it can be configured.

In the development of automatic control, PID control is the oldest of the basic control mode, the control algorithm is the most widely used in engineering, especially the applied research of robustness has extensive engineering practical value. In this paper, based on the principle of the internal model PID parameter setting method was studied, through different approximate processing method, derived the three different formula of PID internal model setting and simulation verify the effectiveness of the algorithm. At the same time, the robustness of the controlled process under different parameter perturbation is theoretically analyzed and simulated.Finally, the paper summarizes the whole paper and looks forward to the future development trend.

The peri-urban and urban forests in Greece occupy a total area of 105.353 ha. In these vulnerable ecosystems, fire constitutes a natural disaster presenting particular challenges and specific difficulties. These include the high number of visitors as well as forests characteristics - such as the presence of particularly flammable tree species and high accumulation of combustible biomass – that make the on-start of fires more likely. The main purpose of the current research is to identify the optimum combination of silvicultural treatments to efficiently reduce potential forest fire severity and to facilitate their successful suppression by firefighting crews. In order to simulate the basic fire environment of urban forests, two main experimental plots were established and several tree and topographical characteristics were measured. Additionally, the NEXUS wildfire system was used to simulate forest fire potential behavior before and after the adoption of the silvicultural treatments that altered critical characteristics of the forest fire environment. The results clearly show that specific silvicultural prescriptions altered the type of forest fire spreading potential, revealing the overall efficiency of preventing actions during forest management.

This paper introduces a surrogate model to reduce the huge computational load in the process of simulation-optimization and uncertainty analysis. First, the groundwater numerical simulation model was established, calibrated and verified in the northeast of Hetao Plain. Second, two surrogate models of simulation model were established using support vector regression (SVR) method, one (surrogate model A, SMA) was used to describe the corresponding relationship between the pumping rate and average groundwater table drawdown, and another (surrogate model B, SMB) was used to express the corresponding relationship between the hydrogeological parameter values and average groundwater table drawdown. Third, an optimization model was established to search an optimal groundwater exploitation scheme using the maximum total pumping rate as objective function and the limitative average groundwater table drawdown as constraint condition, the SMA was invoked by the optimization model for obtaining the optimal groundwater exploitation scheme. Finally, the SMB was invoked in the process of uncertainty analysis for assessing the reliability of optimal groundwater exploitation scheme. Results show that the relative error and root mean square error between simulation model and the two surrogate models are both less than 5%, which is a high approximation accuracy. The SVR surrogate model developed in this study could not only considerably reduce the computational load, but also maintain high computational accuracy. The optimal total pumping rate is 7947 m3/d and the reliability of optimal scheme is 40.21%. This can thus provide an effective method for identifying an optimal groundwater exploitation scheme and assessing the reliability of scheme quickly and accurately.

Carrying out technological tests and research is indispensably connected with high costs and elongation of implementation time of new casting technologies and their modifications in industry. Hence, the application of specialised computer software, enabling the simulation and analysis of metallurgical and casting processes in modern foundry industry is of special interest. The present work presents an experimental application of MAGMASoft software in casting process of EV31A magnesium alloy structural element of helicopter engine. The results of computer simulation have been compared with industrial cast of the simulated element, fabricated in the same conditions. It has been revealed that the computer simulation provides a complex information on the analysed process, leading to reduction of costs and time, connected with technological tests in implementation of new casting technologies.

In this study, we repositioned thiopurine drugs used for the treatment of acute leukaemia as new tyrosinase inhibitors. Tyrosinase catalyses two distinct and successive oxidations in melanin biosynthesis: the conversions of tyrosine to dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) and DOPA to dopaquinone. Continuous efforts are underway to discover small molecule inhibitors of tyrosinase for therapeutic, cosmetic, and agricultural purposes. Structure-based virtual screening has predicted inhibitor candidates for mushroom tyrosinase from drugs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Enzyme assays have confirmed the thiopurine leukaemia drug, thioguanine, as a tyrosinase inhibitor. Two other thiopurine drugs, mercaptopurine and azathioprine, were also evaluated for their tyrosinase inhibitory activity; mercaptopurine caused stronger inhibition than thioguanine did, whereas azathioprine was a poor inhibitor. The inhibitory constants of thioguanine and mercaptopurine were calculated as 52 and 16 µM, respectively, and the value of mercaptopurine was comparable to that of the well-known inhibitor kojic acid (13 µM). The cell lysate and melanin content assay in B16F10 melanoma cells confirmed that the compounds inhibited mammalian tyrosinase. In particular, 50 µM thioguanine reduced the melanin content by 57% without cytotoxicity. Furthermore, the thiopurine drugs shared little chemical similarity with the known tyrosinase inhibitors.

The accumulation of sea surface debris around the coastal waters of Malta poses significant ecological and environmental challenges, negatively affecting marine ecosystems and human activities. This issue is exacerbated by the lack of an effective system tailored to predict surface debris movement specifically for the Islands of Malta. To address this gap, a pipeline that combines a machine learning (ML) based prediction system with a physics-based model is proposed. This pipeline uses historical sea surface currents (SSC) velocities data to forecast future conditions and visualise debris movement. Central to this system are LSTM and GRU models, trained to predict SSC velocities for the next 24 hours for a specific area. These predictions are then utilised by a Lagrangian model to simulate and visualise the debris movement, providing insights into future dispersion patterns. A comparative evaluation of the models showed that the LSTM model outperformed the GRU model, with lower error metrics such as mean absolute error (MAE), mean squared error (MSE), and root mean squared error (RMSE), alongside narrower interquartile ranges (IQR). This method offers a tailored approach to addressing sea surface debris around Malta by accurately predicting SSC velocities and visualising debris movement, improving cleanup operations, and marine conservation strategies.

There are numerous approaches to model an influence of manufacturing parameters on the dissolution and disintegration of solid dosage forms. A modern approach for modelling and simulating complex and heterogeneous systems such as pharmaceutical tablets focuses on computationally-intensive finite-element or discreet element methods. Industrial challenges such as Process Analytical Technology (PAT) and Quality by Design are stimulating computer-based technologies to design, control and improve the quality of pharmaceutical compacts and their performance. In this study the disintegration and dissolution model based on the numerical solutions of the Noyes-Whitney equation and cellular automata supported disintegration model are proposed and evaluated. The results from in vitro release studies of the mefenamic acid formulations were compared to the calculated release patterns from the tablet structures obtained from microtomography experiments and the purely algorithmically created virtual tablets.

Mathematical modeling is the most important tool for constructing the theory of different kinds of two-phase flows. The review is devoted to the analysis of the advent of the approach of mathematical modeling of two-phase flows, where solid particles act mainly as the dispersed phase. The main problems and features of the study of gas-solid two-phase flows are excluded. The main characteristics of gas flows with solid particles are given and the classification of two-phase flows is developed on their basis. The Lagrangian and Euler approaches to modeling the motion of a dispersed phase (particles) are described. Much attention is paid to the consideration of numerical simulation methods that describe descriptions of turbulent gas flow at different hierarchical levels (RANS, LES, DNS), different levels of description of interphase interactions (one-way coupling (OWC), two-way coupling (TWC) and four-way coupling (FWC)), as well as at different levels of interface resolution (partial-point (PP) and particle-resolved (PR)). Excluded are examples of some studies carried out on the basis of the identified approaches, as well as their exclusion for mathematical modeling of various classes of gas-solid two-phase flows.

We outline and test a new methodology for genuine simulation of stochastic processes with any dependence and any marginal distribution. We reproduce time dependence with a generalized, time symmetric or asymmetric, moving-average scheme. This implements linear filtering of non-Gaussian white noise, with the weights of the filter determined by analytical equations in terms of the autocovariance of the process. We approximate the marginal distribution of the process, irrespective of its type, using a number of its cumulants, which in turn determine the cumulants of white noise in a manner that can readily support the generation of random numbers from that approximation, so that it be applicable for stochastic simulation. The simulation method is genuine as it uses the process of interest directly without any transformation (e.g. normalization). We illustrate the method in a number of synthetic and real-world applications with either persistence or antipersistence, and with non-Gaussian marginal distributions that are bounded, thus making the problem more demanding. These include distributions bounded from both sides, such as uniform, and bounded form below, such as exponential and Pareto, possibly having a discontinuity at the origin (intermittence). All examples studied show the satisfactory performance of the method.

The planning and decision-making for a distributed energy supply concept in complex actor structures like in districts calls for the approach to be highly structured. Here, a strategy with strong use of energetic simulations is developed, the core elements are presented and research gaps are identified. The exemplary implementation is shown using the case study of a new district on the former Oldenburg airbase in northwestern Germany. The process is divided into four consecutive phases, which are carried out with different stakeholder participation and use of different simulation tools. Based on a common objective, a superstructure of the applicable technologies is developed. Detailed planning is then carried out with the help of a multi-objective optimal sizing algorithm and Monte Carlo based risk assessment. The process ends with the operating phase, which is to guarantee a further optimal and dynamic mode of operation. The main objective of this publication is present the core elements of the planning processes and decision-making framework based on the case study and to find and identify research gaps that will have to be addressed in the future.

The paper introduces an approach to extract information from measurements and generate new load cycles for electrical energy storage systems. Load cycle analysis is performed using rainflow counting, which helps evaluate data and identify stress factors. Load cycle generation can involve clustering methods, random micro-trip methods, and machine learning techniques. The study utilises the Random Pulse Method (RPM) and presents an improved version called the Gradient Random Pulse Method (gradRPM) that allows control over stress factors such as the gradient of the State of Charge (SOC). Another method called Information Maximizing-Recurrent Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (Info-RCGAN) has been developed, and it utilises a deep learning algorithm for data-driven load profile generation with control over stress factors. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the gradRPM and Info-RCGAN methods in generating load profiles based on the given parameters. The findings provide valuable insights into designing simulation data or testing data for electrical energy storage applications, aiding in improving and understanding system behaviour and requirements.

Streamflow forecasting is of great importance in water resources management and flood warnings. Machine learning techniques can be utilized to assist with river flow forecasting. By analyzing historical time series data on river flows, weather patterns, and other relevant factors, machine-learning models can learn patterns and relationships to present predictions about future river flows. In this study, an Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model is constructed to predict the monthly flows of the Athabasca River at three monitoring stations: Hinton, Athabasca, and Fort MacMurray, in Alberta, Canada. The three monitoring stations upstream, midstream, and downstream were selected to represent the different climatological regimes of the Athabasca River. Time series data were used for the model training to identify patterns and correlations using moving averages, exponential smoothing, and Holt-Winters' method. The model's forecasting was compared against the observed data. The results show that the determination coefficients were 0.99 at all three stations, indicating strong correlations. The root mean square errors (RMSEs) were 26.19 at Hinton, 61.1 at Athabasca, and 15.703 at Fort MacMurray, respectively, and the mean absolute percentage errors (MAPEs) were 0.34%, 0.44%, and 0.14%, respectively. Therefore, the ARIMA model captured the seasonality patterns and trends in the stream flows at all three stations and demonstrated a robust performance for hydrological forecasting. This provides insights and predictions for water resources management and flood warnings.

Accurate assessment of shale gas reserves hinges on a detailed characterization of gas and water distribution within shale reservoirs. Despite its importance, the nanoscale behavior of water and methane in deep shale formations, especially under elevated temperatures and pressures, remains poorly understood. This study proposes a novel molecular modeling approach to represent the complex nanocomposite porous media found in deep shale matrices. Leveraging quantitative data from experimental analyses of shale pore composition, we developed a molecular model that accurately reflects the intricate pore-slit structure within a composite of kerogen and illite, common constituents of shale. Employing a hybrid grand canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulation technique, we investigated the micro-scale distribution and preferential adsorption sites of water and methane within the shale matrix. Our research further elucidates the impact of water on the pore structure of shale and delineates the co-occurrence patterns of water and methane. The simulations reveal that water and methane share similar adsorption preferences on kerogen surfaces, while methane does not exhibit specific adsorption preferences on water-bearing illite. We also find that the presence of water significantly alters the illite pore space, leading to a reduction in larger pore volumes and a concomitant increase in smaller pores. The decrease in methane content with increasing water content is more pronounced in the shrinkage cracks compared to the kerogen matrix pores and is particularly notable in the macropores of illite. The findings underscore the differential sensitivity of methane content to water levels across various shale pore types. These insights contribute to a deeper theoretical understanding of gas and water distribution mechanisms in deep shale reservoirs, offering valuable support for the evaluation of deep shale gas resource potential.

Time-of-Flight (ToF) cameras are subject to high levels of noise and errors due to Multi-Path-Interference (MPI). To correct these errors, algorithms and neuronal networks require training data. However, the limited availability of real data has led to the use of physically simulated data, which often involves simplifications and computational constraints. The simulation of such sensors is an essential building block for hardware design and application development. Therefore, the simulation data must capture the major sensor characteristics. This work presents a learning-based approach that leverages high-quality laser scan data to generate realistic ToF camera data. The proposed method employs MCW-Net (Multi-Level Connection and Wide Regional Non-Local Block Network) for domain transfer, transforming laser scan data into the ToF camera domain. Different training variations are explored using a real-world dataset. Additionally, a noise model is introduced to compensate for the lack of noise in the initial step. The effectiveness of the method is evaluated on reference scenes to quantitatively compare to physically simulated data.

This work proposes a conceptual design for a process for recovering Polystyrene (PS) using solvents of agro-industrial origin. The literature describes the dilution of Expanded Polyestyrene (EPS) in limonene, followed by its insolubilization with alcohols for recovery. However, there is no information on the solubility limit for the PS + limonene + alcohol system, which is critical for the process design. To determine the solubility limit, we diluted the waste EPS in D-limonene, mixed it with ethanol to form a precipitate, and used a gravimetric method to measure the mass of the compounds. These results allowed for the conceptual design of an EPS recycling process using a chemical process simulator, which includes a separator, a distillation column, and auxiliary equipment such as heaters, coolers, and pumps. An empirical correlation was obtained for the solubility limit, which enabled the design of a process for the treatment of 52 kg/s of PS using 0.75 kg /s of ethanol and 2.4 kg / s of D-limonene once the stationary state had been reached. The distillation column is six-stage, with a reflux ratio of 1.5 and duties of 30 000 kW and -25 847 kW for the condenser and reboiler, respectively.

The shear stress generated by wall turbulence is the main cause of wall friction resistance in turbulent flow through pipes. This paper investigates the impact of inserting rest periods (regions of constant Reynolds number) within the pulsating operating cycle of velocity on the fully turbulent flow at large time-averaged Reynolds numbers, using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method. The study aims to explore the effect of increasing rest periods within pulsations on drag resistance. The dimensionless shear stress and drag reduction rates during different time periods of rest were analyzed. Numerical simulation results indicate that the pulsating velocity operation mode does not necessarily lead to drag reduction; it may even result in increased resistance. Inserting rest periods within the pulsation cycle can achieve drag reduction effects, with the maximum drag reduction rate reaching 21.8\%. Comparisons with experimental data and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) from the literature validate the feasibility of using the LES method for pipe pulsating operation modes.

The study examines the noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) management of electric vehicle (EV) powertrains, considering the challenges of the automotive industry's transition to electric drivetrains. The growing popularity of EVs brings new NVH challenges, as the lack of internal combustion engine (ICE) noise makes drivetrain noise more prominent. Key to managing NVH in EV powertrains is understanding the noise from electric motors, inverters, and gear systems. Noise from electric motors, mainly resulting from electromagnetic forces, and high-frequency noise generated by inverters significantly impact overall NVH performance. The article details sources of mechanical noise and vibration, including gear defects in gear systems and shaft imbalances. Methods presented in the publication include simulation and modeling techniques that help identify and solve NVH difficulties. Tools like multi-body dynamics (MBD), finite element method (FEM), and multi-domain simulation are crucial for understanding the dynamic behavior of complex systems. With the support of simulations, engineers can predict noise and vibration challenges and develop effective solutions during the design phase. The study emphasizes the importance of a system-level approach in NVH management, where the entire drivetrain is modeled and analyzed together, not just individual components.

The majority of existing numerical simulations of the effect of bridge piers on water movement are based on a limited number of bridge piers at a laboratory scale. Furthermore, some 2D numerical simulations for actual bridge projects have deficiencies, including the use of overly large mesh sizes and an inadequate treatment of bridge piers. In this study, we compare three methods of structural mesh encryption, suspension mesh, and nonstructural mesh based on Delft3D, and apply the optimization scheme to a real bridge project. It is demonstrated that optimal results can be achieved by utilising a grid size comparable to the pier diameter (Dp) in the region away from the piers. In the vicinity of the piers, the grid cell size should be no larger than 1/9 Dp. The suspended grid technique (DD Boundary) can yield results consistent with those obtained using a full-area high-resolution grid, provided that the total number of grids can be reduced and the computational time is considerably reduced. In this study, the unstructured mesh (Deflt3D Flexible Mesh) scheme was unable to capture the oscillations of the wake flow behind the bridge piers. However, the application of the optimized scheme in bridge engineering has demonstrated its practical value. The findings of this study on mesh resolution and suspension mesh scheme can be applied to the Delft3D software and are also useful for other numerical simulation work.

In this study, we develop a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) model to assess the regional severity of temperature increases due to global warming. The model incorporates various stochastic processes to account for uncertainties such as solar explosions, economic upheavals, rising emissions, and irreversible changes in the climate system. Our base temperature model, influenced by latitude, is enhanced by these random factors to simulate realistic and diverse outcomes of climate change. Numerical simulations on a global grid provide a heatmap representing potential temperature increase severity across different regions. The results highlight the significant impact on tropical and polar regions, demonstrating the utility of SPDE models in understanding and predicting the complex dynamics of climate change. This approach offers valuable insights for policymakers and researchers aiming to develop adaptive strategies for mitigating the adverse effects of global warming.

Multi-stage hydraulic fracturing with horizontal well technology has been widely used in shale oil reservoir. After hydraulic fracturing, hydraulic fractures and opened beddings are intertwined, which result in a complex fracture network. As well as the migration of multi-phase fluids during fracturing and soaking processes, which lead to complex flowback performance, and brings dif-ficulty to productivity evaluation and flowback strategies optimization. In this paper, taking the Daqing Gulong shale reservoir as an example, a numerical model for flowback period, which considered oil-water-gas three-phase flow and orthogonal fracture network has been established. The characteristics and influencing factors of flowback performance have been deeply studied, and the flowback modes of shale oil are reasonably optimized. Factors such as PTPG (pseu-do-threshold pressure gradient), opened bedding stress sensitivity, opened bedding permeability and matrix permeability have obvious effects on the flowback performance, resulting in signifi-cant variations in production peaks, high yield periods, and decline rates. In addition, three flowback modes are distinguished based on the rate at which the BHP (bottom hole pressure) drops. These correspond to three types of choke modes. Based on the result of numerical model, three flowback modes are optimized and the impacts of different flowback modes on shale oil flowback are clarified. This study is particularly important for understanding the performance of shale oil flowback and guiding the efficient exploitation of shale oil.

To address the requirements of sonar imaging, such as high receiving sensitivity, wide bandwidth, wide receiving angle, an AlN PMUT with an optimized ratio of 0.6 for the piezoelectric layer diameter to backside cavity diameter is proposed in this paper. A sample AlN PMUT is designed and fabricated with SOI substrate-based bulk MEMS process. The characterization test result of the sample demonstrates a -6 dB bandwidth of approximately 500 kHz and a measured receiving sensitivity per unit area of at 1.37 V/μPa/mm2, which significantly surpasses the performance of previously reported PMUTs. The -6 dB horizontal angles of the AlN PMUT at 300 kHz and 500 kHz are measured 68.30° and 54.24°, respectively. To achieve an accurate prediction of its characteristics when being packaged and assembled in a receive array, numerical simulations with the consideration of film stress are conducted. The numerical result shows a maximum deviation of ±7% in the underwater receiving sensitivity across the frequency range of 200 kHz to 1000 kHz and a deviation of about 0.33% in the peak of underwater receiving sensitivity comparing to the experimental data. By such good agreement, the simulation method reveals its capability of providing theoretical foundation for enhancing the uniformity of the AlN PMUTs in future studies.

The use of energy resources is essential to the survival and development of human civilization. However, inefficient energy use not only has an impact on the economy, but it also has a significant impact on climate change. Studying and analyzing the factors that increase energy consumption is crucial for improving energy management. The aim of this study is to analyze the factors influencing energy savings in a building taken as a study model under two different climatic conditions. Measurements of the building's energy performance were carried out using the EnergyPlus calculation engine, which enabled us to analyze the strengths of building parameters such as the number of lights, the equipment used, occupancy, temperature and the relationships between the factors influenced. EnergyPlus is an important software tool in the field of building energy efficiency, enabling the precise simulation of building energy consumption. Simulation scenarios based on actual consumption data carried out by researchers have made it possible to develop energy management strategies in buildings in order to optimize energy efficiency, and in particular to promote the thermal performance of these buildings. In the present work, EnergyPlus building energy simulation software is used to simulate the energy consumption of the building of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University in Iasi, in order to determine the factors influencing building energy consumption. It has been shown that occupancy and heating and cooling systems are the key factors influencing energy consumption in buildings. The advantage of this study is that it can be used to model the most influential factors in predicting future energy consumption in buildings.

Nowadays, Multi-needle electrospinning has used to be an efficient method for producing nanofiber membranes. But in the process, the fluctuation errors in electrospinning fluid flow rate have directly influence the membrane quality, which bringing instability and still have not been solved yet. For finding out the solution to the inaccurate flow control in multi-needle, it is necessary to develop a multi-stage flow runner spinneret for large-scale production of nanofiber membrane. At first, the paper uses the finite element software COMSOL to numerically simulate the polymer flow in the runner of spinneret. Based on it, the velocity field distribution curve was draw and the velocity instability coefficient of the polymer flow was attained, which are providing theoretical guidance for the optimal design of spinneret. Next, the response surface analysis method (RSM) was used to establish a regression model between the average diameter of the nanofiber membrane and the process parameters. Then, above regression model used to perform variance data processing between the average diameter and the process parameter configuration. After that, the 2D and 3D response surface profiles and the significance analysis were completed. Finally, the stability of the nanofibers production was improved, which attained the optimal adjustment of process configuration in multi-needle electrospinning.

Some optimal control problems need metaheuristics in searching for the optimal solution, especially when the process has certain characteristics like the Photobioreactor for Algae Growth (distributed parameter, nonlinearities, etc.). Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms within control structures are a realistic approach; their task is often to predict the optimal control values working with a process model (PM). Owing to numerous numerical integrations, there is a big computational effort that is reflected in a large controller execution time. The authors propose to replace the PSO predictor with a machine learning model that has “learned” the quasi-optimal behavior of the couple (PSO, PM); the training data is obtained through closed-loop simulations over the control horizon. The new controller should preserve the process’s quasi-optimal control. In identical conditions, the process evolutions must also be quasi-optimal. The multiple Linear Regression and the Regression Neural Networks were considered as predicting models. The paper first proposes algorithms for collecting and aggregating data sets for the learning process. Algorithms for constructing the machine learning models, implementing the controllers, and closed-loop simulations are also proposed. The simulations prove that the two machine learning predictors have learned the PSO predictor’s behavior such that the process evolves almost identically. The resulting controllers’ execution time drastically decreased while keeping their optimality.

This paper introduces a low-tech capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) designed with low environmental footprint materials. The fabrication process involves a copper plate as the fixed bottom electrode, a polymer-based adhesive as a dielectric material, and an aluminum foil as the top electrode.Finite element simulations include studies of displacement, mechanical stresses, and eigenfrequency. Experimental measurements validate the device's electromechanical behavior, showing an eigenfrequency of 88.6 kHz and a displacement of 22 pm. The low-tech CMUT demonstrates potential for applications such as ultrasonic actuation and energy harvesting, offering simplicity, biocompatibility, and low environmental impact. While not directly ready for applications, these transducers provide hands-on experience with technology similar to high-performance silicon-based implementations. These low-tech MUTs are perfect practical case studies for teaching purposes, combining simulation and experimental validation.

With much more challenging scenarios encountered in engineering, traditional quadrotors couldn’t accomplish all desired missions perfectly. Task-driven based reconfigurable quadrotors have more latent capacity in environment with dense obstacles and narrow corridors. The translational reconfigurable quadrotors and rotational reconfigurable quadrotors are proposed in this presentation, assumptions, mathematical models and related motion control laws are given subsequently, in order to cope with hazard missions, model reference adaptive control laws are proposed, sufficient numerical simulations demonstrate the validity of the proposed control laws.

Schistosomiasis, acquired by skin-penetrating cercariae of dioecious digenean schistosomes during freshwater contact, afflicts nearly 260 and 440 million people with active infections and residual morbidity, respectively; about 10 million women at reproductive age contract schistosomiasis during gestation every year. Acute schistosomiasis is characterized by pre-patent pro-inflammatory CD4+ T-helper 1 or CD4+ Th1/T-helper 17 reactivity against immature schistosomulae. Chronic schistosomiasis is dominated by post-patent anti-inflammatory CD4+ T-helper 2 reactivity against ova epitopes; flukes co-exist in immunocompetent definitive hosts as they are capable of evading their defense mechanisms. Preventive measures should be complemented by vaccination, inducing long-term protection against transmission, infection, and disease recurrence, given the latest advancements in schistosomal vaccines. Transmission models incorporating vaccination available in PubMed, Embase and Web of Science up to December 31, 2023 are presented. Besides conceptual model differences, predictions meant to guide decision- and policymaking reveal continued worm harboring facilitating transmission besides residual infections, and increased susceptibility to re-infection and rebound morbidity, both shifted to later life stages following the intervention. Consequently, a vaccination schedule is pivotal considering the optimal age for initial immunization, i.e., pre-schoolchildren or schoolchildren, in a cohort-based or population-based manner while incorporating potential non-adherers promoting ongoing transmission; longevity over magnitude of vaccine protection to antigenic schistosomal moieties is crucial including accounting for existing pre-acquired immunity from natural exposure, in utero priming besides herd immunity, and induced by chemotherapy. Combining as one multi-component approach long-term effects of vaccination with short-term effects of chemotherapy as regular repeated vaccine-linked therapy in contrast to a single-component intervention seems most promising for achieving WHO’s endpoints of transmission elimination and morbidity control.

Community centers play a crucial role in urban environments, providing physical and educational services to their surrounding communities, particularly for students. Among the many benefits for students are enhanced academic outcomes, improvement of behavioral problems, and increased school attendance. Such centers are also particularly vital for low-income and racial minority students as they are pivotal in giving them outside-of-school learning opportunities. However, determinants influencing attendance at community centers remain largely unexplored. Using census data, Boston Centers for Youth and Families (BCYF) attendance data, and specific center attributes, we develop human mobility gravitational models to predict attendance across the BCYF network. Using those models, we investigate the potential effects on general and student attendance by changing center attributes, such as facilities and operating hours. We also research the impact of changing the walking accessibility to those centers on their respective attendance patterns. After the analysis, we find that the most cost-effective policy to increase BCYF attendance is changing each center’s educational and recreational offerings far beyond any accessibility interventions. Our results provide insights into potential policy changes that could optimize the attendance and reach of BCYF Community Centers to underserved populations.

Purpose of review The forest industry has deployed ICTs to improve productivity of forest supply chains. In this sense, digitalization of data flows significantly impacts wood supply chains, from forest to mills, which must react flexibly to market fluctuations of forest products. The goal of this study was to conduct a literature review on data flow implementations in management systems of wood supply chains and to evaluate their applicability in supply chains to analyze the opportunities for improving them in practice. Recent findings We utilized the ScienceDirect database, Scopus and Web of Science in order to document data flows in systems and actual applications. Due to ongoing outsourcing, the wood procurement chains, and the wood supply chains were identified in the forest industry. Several different technologies can be implemented also in wood supply chains to digitalize the data flow depending on the specific needs of organizations. In this regard, digitalization of Big Data causes significant changes in elements of supply models that should be integrated and standardized in the optimization and simulation systems. Summary A modelling guide is suggested for accurate dynamic solution of problems of forest logistics. Then, the opportunities in digitalization for connecting different data flows, technologies, and stakeholders are discussed thoroughly. We conclude that data-driven dynamic optimization, and locally implemented digitalization contributes to wood supply modeling in the establishment of standards for cloud-based platforms at time-related and sequential measures which will ensure successful forest logistics through the planning and the monitoring of wood supply chains.

This paper presents a model for determining the availability of continuous systems at open pits using the neuro-fuzzy system. The concept of availability is divided into partial indicators (synthetic indicators and sub-indicators). The presented model in relation to already existing models for determining availability uses a combination of the advantages of artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic. The case study was done for the I ECC (bucket wheel excavator – conveyors – crushing plant) system of the open pit Drmno, Kostolac. In this paper, in addition to the ANFIS model for determining the availability of continuous systems, a simulation model was developed. The obtained results of the ANFIS model were verified with the help of a simulation model that uses certain assumptions about the distribution of failures. This paper was created as a result of several years of field and theoretical research into the availability of continuous sys-tems in open-pit mines, and completes a cycle that consists of several published articles on the subject of modeling the behavior of these systems in real time using a time picture of the state, expert assessment, simulation and AI models, respecting the multidisciplinarity of the problem (mining-technological, mechanical, information-technological aspects).

Motivated by the increasing need of optimised micro-devices for droplets production in medical and biological applications, this paper introduces an integrated approach for the study of the liquid-liquid droplet creation in flow-focusing micro cross-junctions. The micro-junction considered is characterised by a restriction of the channels cross-sections in the junction, which has the function of focusing the flow in the region of the droplet formation. The problem is studied numerically in OpenFOAM environment and validated by the comparison with experimental results obtained by high-speed camera images and micro-PIV measurements. The analysis of the forces acting on the dispersed phase during the droplet formation and the diameter of the droplets obtained numerically are considered for the development of a model of the droplet breakup under the squeezing regime. On the basis of energy balancing during the breakup, a relation between interfacial tension, the size of the cross-sections in the junction, and the time interval needed for droplet creation is obtained, which yields a novel correlation between the dimensionless length of the droplet and the dimensionless flow rate. This correlation is general and can be used to predict the droplet diameters produced by similar micro-junctions with different aspect ratios and extended to different geometries of flow-focusing micro-junctions.

By exploring the immense potential of computational modeling and optimization, we strive to contribute to the ongoing efforts in advancing energy sustainability and shaping the future of LNG as a crucial global energy source."In this paper, our focus is on simulating and optimizing the process of converting natural gas to LNG. Our goal is to achieve the minimum energy consumption per ton of LNG produced. Through our research, we have identified that utilizing a three-stage exchanger is the most effective approach for minimizing energy consumption in an LNG industrial production unit. Moreover, we have discovered that the outlet pressure from the compressor and the type of refrigerant in the cooling system play significant roles in determining the rate of energy conservation. By carefully considering these factors and optimizing their settings, we can further enhance the overall energy efficiency of the LNG production process. Our research aims to provide valuable insights and guidance to industry professionals and decision-makers in the LNG sector. By implementing the findings of this study, we can contribute to the sustainable development and utilization of LNG as a cleaner and more environmentally energy source. Friendly It's great to see the optimized parameters for the refrigerants and pressure settings in the liquefaction and subcooling cycles. With the mass fraction of 0.89 for methane and 0.14 for ethane in the liquefaction cycle, and 0.59 for methane and 0.3 for nitrogen in the composition for achieving energy efficiency in the LNG production subcooling cycle, The optimized outlet pressure of 650 kPa for the compressors in the liquefaction cycle and 1800 kPa for the subcooling cycle furtherr ccontribute to minimizing energy consumption. Based on your findings, the amount of consumed energy at 14.81 kW per ton of produced LNG highlights the success of the optimization efforts. Reducing the energy consumption per ton of LNG produced is a significant accomplishment towards achieving energy sustainability and environmental friendliness in the LNG industry. These results demonstrate the importance of computational modeling and optimization in identifying the best parameters for eenhancing energy efficiency in LNG production. By implementing these optimized settings, we can work towards a more sustainable future with reduced energy consumption and lower environmental impact

Hydrogen storage in high pressure tanks can occur with different filling strategies. Many studies have been carried out on supplies with increasing pressure rates. However, hydrogen filling with constant mass inflow rate have not received the same attention. The present work aims to carry out numerical simulations to study hydrogen flow, in a type 3 tank of 70 MPa NWP and constant inflow rate condition. From the analysis of the results, it was possible to verify that there is a linear relationship between the increase in the total equilibrium temperature and the final hydrogen temperature. There is also a linear increasing relationship between Inlet and final temperatures when the equilibrium temperature is fixed. Considering fully adiabatic walls results in significant increases in temperature. The difference between total and static temperatures found in the Inlet tube decreases with the decrease in mass flow rate. The choice of a polymer for the tank lining led to higher temperatures when compared to an aluminum lining.

The crosslinking behavior of polyethylene (PE) determines its exceptional performance and application. In this study, we investigated the crosslinking behaviors of different PE resins through model simulation and rheological methods. Specifically, the mathematical equation of "S" model was established for PE resin. According to this equation, the optimal maximum gel content for high-density polyethylene (HDPE) was found to be around 85%. Moreover, the maximum crosslinking degrees for different PE resins depended largely on their density and molecular weight. The melt viscosities before crosslinking in PE resins were highly influenced by their melt index. The higher melt indexes resulted in the lower storage moduli, improving melt processability during processing. In addition, the crosslinking rates of PE resins were strongly influenced by peroxide concentration, independent of PE resin structures. For high molecular weight and low-density PE resins, they exhibited decreased ti values, increased A0 values, and decreased k6 values. However, there were no noticeable variations in the values of k2 and phi among different PE resins. And all simulated modeling outcomes showed the remarkable consistency with the experimental rheological data. These findings are of utmost significance in the industrial manufacture of PE resin.

In this study, we focused on the eco-driving of electric vehicles (EVs). The target vehicle is an electric bus developed by our research team. Using the parameters of the bus and speed pattern optimization algorithm, we derived the EV eco-driving speed pattern. Compared to eco-driving of internal combustion engine vehicles (ICVs), we found several different characteristics. We verified these characteristics with actual vehicle driving test data of the target bus, and the results confirmed its rationality. The EV eco-driving method can improve electricity consumption by about 10% - 20% under the same average speed.

For the polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), the separator thickness plays an important role to determine the weight, the volume and the costs of the PEFC. In addition, thermal management, i.e. temperature distribution is also important for the PEFC system to obtain higher performance. However, there were few reports investigating the relationship between the temperature distribution and the power generation performance such as current density distribution of PEFC operated at higher temperature (HT-PEFC). The aim of this study is to clarify the impact of separator thickness on the relationship between the temperature distribution and the current density distribution of HT-PEFC. This study has also investigated the impact of separator thickness on the relationship between the temperature distribution and the gases such as H2, O2 and the current density distribution of HT-PEFC numerically using CFD software COMSOL Multiphysics. The separator thicknesses of 2.0 mm, 1.5 mm and 1.0 mm were studied. In the study, the operation temperature and the relative humidity (RH) of supply gas were also changed. As a result, it was revealed that the optimum separator thickness was 2.0 mm to obtain higher power generation of HT-PEFC. Since the heat capacity in the case of the separator thickness of 2.0 mm was the largest among the separators investigated in this study, the dehydration of PEM and catalyst layer was smaller compared with the thinner separator thicknesses. It was also revealed that the impacts of separator thickness on distribution of gases, e.g. O2, H2O, and current density distribution became larger under higher temperature and lower RH conditions. This study also concluded that the tendency of temperature distribution matched those of O2, H2O and current density distributions.

African indigenous herbs and medicinal plants are extensively reported for their protective and therapeutic potential against Diabetes. However, most of the constituent phytochemicals that may account for the therapeutic activity are largely uninvestigated. Exploring novel phytochemical–target interactions in silico could help to provide useful insights into the mechanism underpinning the biological activities of these plants and their constituent phytochemicals. The aim of this study was to explore the interactions of terpene struc-tures previously reported from selected African antidiabetic with two emerging drug targets in diabetes. Structure-based virtual screening was used to screen 107 terpene structures against DPP-4 and PTP1B enzymes. The MD simulation, MM-GBSA free energy calculation and DFT were used to clarify the inter-actions of the in silico hits with the target enzymes. Molecular docking, post-docking Prime MM-GBSA analysis revealed the top terpenes with high binding affinity with the active site regions of DPP-4 and PTP1B. Ensemble docking revealed three triterpenes viz: cucurbitacin B (T1), 6-Oxoisoiguesterin (T4) and 20-Epi-isoiguesterinol (T2) as in silico hits which exhibit strong interaction potential with critical residues that define the catalytic triad (Ser630 and His740); oxyanion cavity (Ser631); hydrophobic S1 pocket (Tyr662) and the charged S2 pocket (Arg125) in the active site region of DPP-4. The interactions of these compounds with DPP-4 exhibited structural stability and conformational flexibility during 100 ns full atomistic MD simulation as indicated by the structure dynamics parameters including RMSD, RoG, SASA and hydrogen bond number. The post-MD MM/GBSA calculations further revealed the stability of the triterpene-DPP-4 complexes. Furthermore, Frontier molecular orbital calculations showed that, the triterpenes possess high interaction potential with the enzyme. The triterpenes showed desirable ADMET properties and drug-likeness. Therefore, cucurbitacin B, 6-Oxoisoiguesterin and 20-Epi-isoiguesterinol are recommended for experimental validation.

In the context of post-harvest pest management in agricultural products, the adoption of modified atmospheres presents an eco-friendly alternative to conventional pesticides. This study focuses on nitrogen gas as a potential agent for insect control in stored commodities, utilizing computational simulations to investigate its penetration and distribution within two common storage configurations: chamber-contained pallets and silos. By employing the convection-diffusion equation, the simulations reveal insights into nitrogen distribution dynamics and duration required for oxygen reduction. The results highlight the influence of boundary conditions, commodity porosity, and convection effects on nitrogen dispersion. In chamber scenarios, boundary condition type significantly affects oxygen reduction time, while in silos, convection and diffusion interact to establish a consistent diffusion layer thickness. This research enhances the understanding of modified atmosphere techniques and their potential for sustainable pest management. It provides practitioners with valuable quantitative insights, paving the way for optimized modified atmosphere strategies in real-world agricultural contexts.

Swirling coal flames are encountered in swirl burners of boiler furnaces and cyclone coal combustors, and were studied using large-eddy simulation (LES) in reported references. However, the structures of swirling coal flames remain to be further studied. In the present paper LES of swirling coal flames is conducted for two combustors using two gas combustion models. The statistical simulation results are accessed by experiments and the instantaneous simulation results are used to analyze the specific features of flame structures of four cases. It is seen that different inlet flow conditions and different secondary-air flow rate lead to different flame structures

Understanding the infiltration and solidification processes of liquid 5083Al alloy into Al2O3 three-dimensional reticulated porous ceramic (Al2O3(3D) RPC) is essential for optimizing the microstructure and properties of Al2O3(3D)/5083Al interpenetrating phase composites (IPCs) prepared by low-pressure infiltration process (LPIP). This study employs ProCAST software to simulate the infiltration and solidification processes of liquid 5083Al with pouring velocities (PV) of 0.4 m/s infiltrating into Al2O3(3D) RPC preforms with varying porosities at different pouring temperatures (PT) to prepare Al2O3(3D)/5083Al IPCs using LPIP. The results demonstrate that pore diameter of Al2O3(3D) RPC preforms and PT of liquid 5083Al significantly influence the of the infiltration. Solidification process analysis reveals that the Al2O3(3D) RPC preform with smaller pore diameters allows the lower pouring velocity of 5083Al to solidify faster compared to the preform with larger pore diameters. Al2O3(3D)/5083Al IPCs were prepared successfully from Al2O3(3D) RPC porosity of 15 PPI with liquid 5083Al at PV 0.4 m/s and PT 800 °C using LPIP, resulting in nearly fully dense composites, where both Al2O3(3D) RPCs and 5083Al interpenetrate throughout the microstructure. The infiltration and solidification defects were reduced under air pressure of 0.3 MPa (corresponding to PV of 0.4 m/s) during LPIP. Finite volume method simulations are in good agreement with experimental data, validating the suitability of the simplified model for Al2O3(3D) RPCs in the infiltration simulation.

Coproporphyrins I and III (CP-I and CP-III) are established as substrates of hepatic sinusoidal organic anion transporting polypeptides (Oatps), multidrug resistance-associated protein 3 (Mrp3), and canalicular transporter Mrp2. We aimed to evaluate the potential of plasma CP-I and CP-III concentrations to indicate functional changes in hepatic transporters in nonalcoholic stea-tohepatitis (NASH) rodent models using modeling and simulation approach. Mechanistic copro-porphyrins (CP-I and CP-III) models in rats and mice were constructed based on metabolism, transport, and elimination pathways in rodents. To parameterize the rat mechanistic model, we measured CP concentrations in plasma, liver, bile, and urine in healthy control Sprague Dawley rats. The mouse mechanistic model was parameterized using published data. The rat and mouse CP models described the steady-state levels of CP-I and CP-III in plasma, liver, and bile. The model recapitulated the observed high plasma CP-III / CP-1 ratio (9- and 3-fold in rats and mice, respec-tively) and elimination pathways of CP-I (>90% via biliary secretion) and CP-III (equal via bile and urine). Rat CP model was further validated with the published rat fistula model. The simulated increased plasma CP-I concentrations (4-fold), resulted from decreased Oatp activity (0.6-fold) and increased Mrp3 activity (3-fold) were comparable to those observed in bile-duct ligated NASH model. Sensitivity analysis revealed that 90% inhibition of Oatp and Mrp2 leads to a 4-fold and 2.5-fold increase in plasma CP-I levels, respectively. Additionally, we demonstrated the utility of the mechanistic CP models in testing hypothesis and understanding the mechanisms of the ob-served plasma CPs disposition in the Oatp knockout (KO) mice, bile-duct ligation NASH mice, and Mrp2 deficient TR- rats. Collectively, using a mechanistic model, we conclude that CP-I is a robust and predictable marker for assessing change in the activity of Oatps and Mrps in animal models. Our analysis suggests that efflux transporters (Mrp2 and Mrp3) can play an important role in the disposition of CP-I along with Oatp transporters in rodents.

An atomic-scale approach is employed to simulate the formation of precipitates with different lattice misfits in the early stages of aging of supersaturated aluminum alloys. Simulation results reveal that the increase of lattice misfit could significantly promote the nucleation rate of precipitates, which results in a larger number and smaller size of the precipitates. The morphologies of the precipitates also vary with the degree of lattice misfit. Moreover, the higher the lattice misfit, the earlier the nucleation of the second phase occurs, which can substantially inhibit the movement of dislocations. The research on the lattice misfit of precipitation can provide theoretical guidance for the design of high-strength aluminum alloy.

The coronaviral pandemic has led to a shift in traditional teaching methods to more innovative approaches, such as high-fidelity patient simulation (HFPS), which can improve students’ clinical judgement and decision-making for quality patient care. A modified guideline was introduced to enhance students’ satisfaction and self-confidence in learning through HFPS. The study involved 189 baccalaureate nursing students, with 92 in the intervention group and 97 in the control group. The intervention group received the modified HFPS guideline, while the control group received standard treatment with basic instruction. After the HFPS debriefing session, students provided narrative feedback on their learning experience. The quantitative results showed that students in the intervention group reported a significant improvement in satisfaction and self-confidence in learning compared to the control group. The modified HFPS guideline provided clear guidance for students to learn and apply knowledge and skills more effectively, leading to increased engagement during interactive simulation sessions. The results suggest that the HFPS guideline should be added to the curriculum to enhance students’ satisfaction and self-confidence in learning, even in junior students. Innovative teaching methods, such as HFPS, can be necessary and beneficial for healthcare professional training, after the pandemic.

Cellular automata (CA) models have emerged as a valuable tool in corrosion management. This manuscript provides an overview of the application of cellular automata models in corrosion research, highlighting their benefits and contributions to understanding the complex nature of corrosion processes. Cellular automata models offer a computational approach to simulate corrosion behavior at the microscale, capturing the intricate interactions between electrochemical reactions, material properties, and environmental factors generating a new vision of predictive maintenance. It discusses the key features of cellular automata, such as the grid-based representation of the material surface, the definition of state variables, and the rules governing cell-state transitions. The ability to model local interactions and emergent global behavior makes cellular automata particularly suitable for simulating corrosion processes. Finally, cellular automata models offer a powerful and versatile approach to studying corrosion processes, expanding models that can continue to enhance our understanding of corrosion and contribute to the development of effective corrosion prevention and control strategies.

Computer simulation relies on well-defined experimental supported theories, models, and numerical methods. Computer simulation is an alternative to fill the gaps where the experiment is pricy or limited in engineering. Computer simulation is a high-fidelity computational technique that can work as an engineering innovation tool to try imaginative ideas beyond the available technologies. The accuracy of current computer simulation results is reliable enough to accelerate innovation for new materials and mechanical technologies without experimental validation. So, we may need to urge relying on computer simulation results without any experimental validation to accelerate engineering innovations. In addition, using high-fidelity computer simulation for engineering innovation acceleration without validation will be promoted if it is credited as a new classification. This subject and a related justification's classification in engineering have been discussed.

The information society has transformed human life. Technology is almost everywhere, including health and education. For example, years ago, speech and language therapy students required a long time and high-cost equipment to develop healthcare of the auditory and vestibular systems competencies. The high cost of the equipment permitted its practical use only in classes, hindering students’ autonomy in developing those competencies. That situation was a real issue, even more in times of pandemic where online education was essential. This article describes SAEF, an open-source software simulator for autonomously developing procedural audiology therapy competencies, user acceptance, and the validity of experiments and results. SAEF delivers immediate feedback and performance results. Obtained results permit validating students’ and educators’ acceptability of SAEF in audiology therapy education. Obtained results invite authors to continue developing simulator software solutions in other health education contexts. SAEF was developed using open-source technology to facilitate its accessibility, classification, and sustainability.

The popularity and growth of additive manufacturing(AM) in recent years are due to its ability to provide innovative solutions to complex manufacturing challenges and its potential to transform the way products are designed, developed, and produced. In this work, the numerical simulation geometry of the model extruder from nozzle is established along with the material extrusion process. The high gravity material extrusion system (HG-MEX) properties and characteristics during filament fabrication are evaluated. This work investigates the effects of gravity on the material extrusion process from nozzle extrusion. This work is unique in the incorporation of fluid surface characteristics to represent the performance and contact with the material extrusion in additive manufacturing. The use of simulation in high gravity material extrusion in additive manufacturing is a meaningful and valuable approach to improving the quality and efficiency of the process.

In principle, modular or integral character of manufacturing lines depends on topological designs of products and determined operation tasks. On the other hand, in specific situations there is an articulated need for modular design in smart manufacturing systems, since modular layouts are a crucial step towards agile production via smart manufacturing. The aim of this paper is to explore how the modular layout relates to manufacturing lead time (MLT) and to operational complexity of smart manufacturing systems. For this purpose, topologically different models of alternative process layouts were simulated and tested, while MLT values were obtained using Tecnomatix Plant Simulation. Obtained positive findings of this research could be useful not only in selection of the most suitable process design from the alternative ones, but especially in deepening knowledge and better understanding of the concept of optimal network modularity.

A large amount of steel slag (SS) and CO2 are generated in the steelmaking process. The indirect CO2 capture using SS is a promising way for co-treatment of the wastes. Ammonium salt solution is widely used to extract Ca2+ from the SS since it is recyclable. Several works have focus on improving the carbonation rate by adjusting various parameters (e.g., temperature and pH). However, there is little detail information about the associating behaviors and interaction strength between the various ions in the ammonia solution during the carbonation process. In this work, the Ca2+–CO32-–NH4+–Cl-–H2O system was established by using Material studio software. The effects of temperature and concentration of CO32- on CaCO3 growth were explored at the atomic scale by calculating the binding energy, mean square displacement, and diffusion coefficient between particles. Furthermore, the microstructure, bonding characteristics, and occurrence behavior of each particle were studied though molecular dynamics simulation methods. The results showed that with the increase of temperature (20–80 ℃), the binding ability and diffusion coefficients of Ca2+ and CO32- increase in the system, which is beneficial to the formation of CaCO3 clusters. With the increase of the concentration of CO32- (15–25 vol.%), the binding ability and diffusion coefficient of Ca2+ and CO32- in the system are enhanced, which is beneficial to the formation of CaCO3 clusters.

The amino acid composition of the active site in an enzyme is influential on its substrate selectivity. For CYP2E1, the role of PHE residues in the formation of effective orientations for its activity toward aromatic substrates remains unclear. In this study, molecular docking and molecular dynamics analysis were performed toward the interactions between PHEs in the active site of human CYP2E1 and various aromatic compounds as confirmed CYP2E1 substrates. The results indicated that the orientation of 1-methylpyrene (1-MP) in the active site was highly modulated by the PHEs, PHE478 contributing to the binding free energy most significantly. Furthermore, by building a random forest model the relationship between each of 19 molecular descriptors of PCB congeners (from molecular docking, quantum mechanics, and physicochemical properties) and established human CYP2E1-dependent mutagenicity of a series of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which have been proven to be human carcinogens and endocrinal disrupters, was investigated. The presence of PHEs did not appear to significantly modify the electronic or structural feature of each bound ligand (PCB), instead, the flexibility of the molecular conformation of PHEs contributed substantially to the effective binding energy and orientation. It is supposed that PHE residues adjust their own conformation to permit a suitable space for the ligand binding and form an orientation favorable for a biochemical reaction. This study has provided some insights into the role of PHEs in guiding the interactive adaptation of the active site of human CYP2E1 for the binding and metabolism of aromatic substrates.

High density of buildings and the large traffic volume of cities give rise to narrow spaces and high passenger flows in most subway stations. When evacuation is required during an emergency, these problems may trigger issues in operational safety. Therefore, it is imperative to comprehensively assess subway station emergency evacuation times and capacities during the operating process to ensure the design is safe, science-based, and rational. To further enhance safe evacuation capacity, this paper proposes an overall evacuation time model that considers the multielement charac-teristics of subway stations in multiple segments. The evacuation route is decomposed into five stages according to the critical nodes in the evacuation process. An overall emergency evacuation time model is established based on the diversity of bottlenecks in the five stages, integrating elements such as the horizontal movement velocity of passengers, subway equipment parameters, and human density. Taking Xi’an Wulukou Subway Station as an example, this paper verifies the outcomes of the theoretical model against the Pathfinder software and conducts additional anal-yses of the evacuation conditions of stairs and exits. The results show that the error between the theoretical emergency evacuation time and simulation evacuation time was 5.4%, The emergency evacuation model established in this study boasts strong robustness and stability.

Nonequilibrium work switching simulations and Jarzynski’s equation are a reliable method to compute free energy differences, ΔAlow→high, between two levels of theory, such as a pure molecular mechanical (MM) and a quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) description of a system of interest. Despite the inherent parallelism, the computational cost of this approach can quickly get very high. This is particularly true for systems where the core region, the part of the system to be described at different levels of theory, is embedded in an environment, such as explicit solvent water. We find that even for relatively simple solute–water systems, switching lengths of at least 5 ps are necessary to compute ΔAlow→high reliably. In this study, we investigate two approaches towards an affordable protocol, with emphasis on keeping the switching length well below 5 ps. Inserting a hybrid charge intermediate state with modified partial charges which resembles the charge distribution of the desired high level makes it possible to obtain reliable calculations with 2 ps switches. Attempts using step-wise linear switching paths, on the other hand, did not lead to improvement, i.e., faster convergence for all systems. To understand these findings, we analyzed the solutes’ properties as a function of partial charges used, the number of waters in direct contact with the solute, and studied the time needed for water molecules to reorient themselves upon a change in the solute’s charge distribution.

Simulation-Based Medical Education that uses Virtual Patients has become increasingly important during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the need for social distancing and minimizing contact, medical simulation technology has provided a valuable tool for healthcare professionals to practice and improve their skills without the need for face-to-face interactions. MedSIM is a medically accurate simulation platform with Virtual Patients designed for undergraduate medical education. Our study involved two groups of students. The PreCOVID group, before the pandemic, underwent conventional teaching methods. The COVID group, during the pandemic, had students exposed to conventions skills taught earlier and were taught again with MedSIM. Students indicated high satisfaction with the clinical skills demonstrated by the Virtual Patients. More than half agreed that MedSIM had enabled them to perform all kinds of procedures on patients (PreCOVID group 68.8%, COVID group 71.3%), showed cues and consequences much like those in natural clinical environments (PreCOVID 68.4%, COVID 71.3%). Also, MedSIM allowed them to have a repetitive practice that helps in critical skills transfer to actual patients (PreCOVID 72.7%, COVID 74.7%). MedSIM met the expectations of most of the students. Students from both groups rated the online performance of the MedSIM simulator as "Very good." Analysis from a customized word cloud indicated that most students found MedSIM to be good and of educational value. MedSIM platform enhances healthcare professionals' skills and knowledge, leading to better patient outcomes and increased access to healthcare, supporting SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being). It also provides a safe and controlled environment for healthcare professionals to learn and practice essential skills, supporting SDG 4 (Quality Education).

On 11 March 2020, the COVID-19 emergency was declared and a large number of patients were admitted to the ICUs. Consequently, ICUs had to recruit nurses from other units as well as Nursing students without working experience in critical patients care. Since Critical nursing competence is crucial to avoid medical errors, the aim of this study was, to describe the level of safety and nursing competence in critical patient care of recruited nurses and students, during the COVID-19 pandemic in ICUs. A cross-sectional descriptive study of 66 participants using the validated competency assessment questionnaire for nurses in hospital care (COM-VA©) was performed. Our results showed that the level of safety perceived in critical patients care by the students on placement in ICUs and mentors scored higher than the rest of the participants. Interestingly, whereas the participant’s COM-VA© score indicated a level of competence good enough to work autonomously, the supervisor/mentor’s COM-VA© evaluation showed that only the group of students on placement obtained this level of competency. Altogether, we found that students on placement in ICU possesses a higher level of safety and COM-VA© scores than the rest of participants probably due to the close support of the mentor.

A novel physiologically based algorithm (PBA) for fast CFD computation of Flow Fractional Reserve (FFR) in Coronary Artery Trees (CATs) is proposed and developed, which, unlike traditional methods, is based on the extension of the Murray’s law for blood vessels at the outlets and extra inlet conditions prescribed alternatively and iteratively. The PBA is then implemented in both SimVascular and Ansys CFD for testing and validation. For validation purpose, 3D models of CATs are built by using their CT images and computational meshes generated for mesh convergence study. Results obtained are then compared with Invasive Coronary Angiographic (ICA) data for validation and evaluation of its accuracy and computational efficiency. It is found that discrepancies between experimental and calculated values of pressure and flow rate at the inlet were less than 0.1% at the end of the 10^th round of iteration or less. Further validation shows that the difference between estimated and experimental FFR agree with each other with a maximum difference of 1.62% after convergence is achieved. The PBA is found to be a robust patient-specific and physiologically sound method that can be a good alternative to the existing Lumped Parameter Model (LPM) which is based on empirical scaling correlations using limited population-averaged data and requires nonlinear iterative computation for convergence.

Porcelain tile manufacturing is an energy-intensive industry that is in dire need of increasing productivity, minimizing costs, and reducing CO2 emissions, while keeping the product quality intact to remain competitive in today’s environment. In this contribution, alternative processing parameters for the porcelain tile production sequence were proposed based on simulation-based process optimization. Flowsheet simulations in the Dyssol framework were used to study the impact of milling and firing process parameters on the electrical and thermal energy consumption, final product quality, and productivity of the entire processing sequence. For this, a new model of gas flow consumption in the sintering stage was proposed and implemented. During optimization, the primary condition was to maintain the product quality by keeping the final open porosity of the tile within the specified industrial range. The proposed simulation methodology proved to be effective in predicting the influence of processing parameters on the intermediate and final products of the manufacturing sequence, as well as in estimating production costs for the Brazilian and Spanish economic conditions. This approach has shown great potential to promote digitalization and establish digital twins in ceramic tile manufacturing for further in-line process control.
