Fire outbreaks continue to cause damage despite the improvements in fire-detection tools and algorithms. It is still challenging to implement a well performing and optimized approach, which is sufficiently accurate, and has tractable complexity and low false alarming rate. Small amount of fire and identification of fire from a long distance is also a challenge in previously proposed techniques. In this study, we propose a novel hybrid model based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to detect and analyze fire intensity. 21 convolutional layers, 24 Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) layers, 6 pooling layers, 3 fully connected layers, 2 dropout layers, and a softmax layer are included in the proposed 57-layer CNN model. Our proposed model performs instance segmentation in order to distinguish between fire and non-fire events. To reduce the intricacy of the proposed model, we also propose a key-frame extraction algorithm. The proposed model uses Internet of Things (IoT) devices to alert the relevant person by calculating the severity of fire. Our proposed model is tested on a publicly available dataset having fire and normal videos. The achievement of 95.25 % classification accuracy, 0.09% False Positive Rate (FPR), 0.65 percent False Negative Rate (FNR), and a prediction time of 0.08 seconds validates the proposed system.

In an IoT system, the sheer volume of data generated by numerous sensing devices necessitates a well-designed scheme for storing and retrieving data efficiently, enabling streamlined data processing and analytics. One promising storage architecture involves utilizing solid-state drives (SSDs) to cache data from hard disk drives (HDDs), thereby creating an SSD-based caching storage system. To further enhance access performance, it is possible to employ readahead techniques to minimize data access latency. However, the existing Linux readahead scheme falls short in fully leveraging SSD-based caching storage systems. We address this limitation by introducing a novel cross-layered readahead architecture that effectively communicates with the VFS layer, the file system layer, and the block I/O layer. This communication facilitates the acquisition of readahead timing, readahead data continuity, and readahead data location, respectively. To guide prefetching decisions, our architecture analyzes the degree of data access sequentiality, the performance model of the target storage device, and the access patterns of the I/O workload on the corresponding storage device. The implementation of this new architecture in the Linux kernel yields promising experimental results, demonstrating its robustness by consistently outperforming the stock Linux kernel. Notably, our architecture reduces the total execution time of the stock Linux kernel by up to 49%, except in cases of random workloads where both the stock Linux kernel and our architecture exhibit similar performance.

Immense challenges arise in the Quality Assurance area due to contemporary development in Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Current issues are mainly related to test coverage, test diversity, IoT Stability, Use of Cellular Networks in IoTs, IoT Devices updates, Security, Data Integration, and interoperability. In this paper, we present all those issues with suggestions for tackling those issues.

The fourth industrial revolution has resulted in the digitalization of projects and operations across all sectors. Accordingly, efforts are being made to utilize advanced technologies to improve the energy efficiency of the building sector. This study has reviewed the current application and limitations of cutting-edge technologies in this regard. An overview of the use of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), digital twin (DT), and building information modeling (BIM) for energy efficiency of buildings has been provided. It has been found that the use of Industry 4.0 technologies, during the construction and operational phase of buildings, has a great potential to reduce energy consumption and emissions of the sector. This study may help stakeholders of the built environment to understand the role of industry 4.0 tools for energy efficiency of the sector.

Globally, groundwater is the largest distributed storage of freshwater that plays an important role in an ecosystem’s sustainability in addition to aiding human adaptation to both climatic change and variability. However, groundwater resources are dynamic and often changes as a result of land usage, abstraction as well as variation in climate. Thus, efficient management of groundwater resources to prevent overexploitation, scarcity, and minimising the effects of drought has become a major challenge for researchers as well as water managers. Furthermore, a number of research challenges such as the lack of computational efficiency and scalability due to uncertainties from input parameters to the groundwater resource model have been revealed in the management of groundwater resources. To solve these challenges, many conventional solutions such as numerical techniques have been proffered for groundwater modelling. Also, the use of data-driven techniques such as machine learning is gaining more attraction to solve these aforementioned challenges. Thus, this has made efficient data gathering essential to maintain da-ta-driven groundwater resources management models from the observation site. The global evolution of the Internet of Things (IoTs), has increased the nature of data gathering for the management of groundwater resources. In addition, efficient data-driven groundwater resource management relies hugely on information relating to changes in groundwater resources as well as their availability. Although the IoTs enabled automated data processing systems are in existence by transmitting the generated data from IoT enabled devices into the cloud through the Internet. However, traditional IoT Internet is not scalable and efficient enough to process the generated vast IoT data At the moment, some pieces of the literature revealed the groundwater managers lack an efficient, scalable and real-time groundwater management system to gather the required data. Also, the literature revealed that the existing methods of collecting data lack efficiency to meet computational model requirements and meet management objectives. Thus, it is necessary to have an efficient and scalable IoT system to extract valuable information in real-time for groundwater resource management. Unlike previous surveys which solely focussed on particular groundwater issues related to simulation and optimisation management methods, nonetheless, this paper seeks to highlight the current groundwater management models as well as the IoT contributions
