Rammed earth in a built environment has vapor diffusion characteristics and humidity control ability each of which are respectively attributed to the porous structures and the hydrophilic properties. Indeed, these structures and properties, which allows easily absorbing water parti-cles, hence, affecting the durability of a rammed earth wall. This paper presents the water repel-lency method for rammed earth walls which synthesizes siloxane copolymers containing fluo-rine. The water-repellent properties are investigated by measuring the contact angle, water ab-sorption rate, and compressive strength after spray coating with the synthesized siloxane co-polymers on the surface of the rammed earth specimens under study. The water contact angle of the specimen coated with a siloxane copolymer containing 10 mol.% of a silane monomer with a fluorine group is about 140o. The water absorption of the specimen obtained after immersing in water for 24 hours is low at about 3.5 wt.%. In addition, the compressive strength is remained more than 80% of the corresponding strength of the specimen which is not immersed into water. It is confirmed that the use of a 10% by volume of the siloxane copolymer containing the fluo-rine group may assure the water-repellent performance and the economic competitiveness.

Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are a group of common metabolites with a potential of universal infochemicals dedicated to transferring of information between higher organisms and bacteria either from microbiome or external environment. VFAs are common substances among various insect orders, there are numerous studies exploring their influence on the behavior of different insect species. In relation to papers published by J. E. McFarlane, we assess the effects of formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric acids on spatial preference of common stored food grain products, and poultry industry pest – lesser mealworm (Alphitobius diaperinus). We present novel method of continuous, simultaneous assessment of site preference as well as travelled distance in constant-flow olfactometer. All tested VFAs except valeric had a significant repellent effect with formic acid being effective in the lowest concentration. Additionally, VFAs significantly altered distance travelled by insects. Obtained results indicate a potential role of VFAs in the olfactory guided behavior of A. diaperinus, we speculate that reaction to the presence if VFAs may deviate form specificity of species’ original habitat.

The main scope of the presented paper is an assessment of the potential repellent effect of selected essential oils (EOs) against Alphitobius diaperinus, which can cause economic losses in storages and poultry industry. Due to development of pesticide resistance in A. diaperinus populations, as well as an attempt to limit extensive usage of potentially harmful pesticides in food-related industries, there is a strong need for development of alternative methods of management of A. diaperinus infestations. Because of cost-effectiveness, availability and low vertebrate toxicity EOs are promising agents in pest management. In presented paper four of-the-shelf EOs: mint, vanilla, lemon and citronella (and their mixtures) were tested as a potential repellents. Moreover, novel preference assay providing an extended analysis of preference and the locomotor response was used. The most effective EOs were, respectively: citronella and lemon. EOs mixtures were generally more repellent than single EOs, with lemon and vanilla 1:1 mixture acting as the strongest repellent. Few of tested EOs caused significant alterations in locomotor activity, although direct relation wasn’t observed. In conclusion, EOs can be potentially used as a repellent agents in A. diaperinus management. Additionally, data on locomotor activity may lead to better design of pull-push strategies in pest management.
