Validity of Current Smartwatches for Triathlon Training: How Accurate Are Heart Rate, Distance, and Swimming Readings?

Smartwatches are one of the most relevant fitness trends of the past two decades, and they collect increasing amounts of health and movement data. The accuracy of these data may be questionable and requires further investigation. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to validate smartwatches for use in triathlon training. Ten different smartwatches were tested for accuracy in measuring heart rate, distance (via global navigation satellite systems, GNSS), swim stroke rates and the number of swim laps in a 50 m Olympic-size pool. The optical heart rate measurement function of each smartwatch was compared to that of a chest strap. Thirty participants (15 females, 15 males) ran five 3-minute intervals on a motorised treadmill to evaluate the accuracy of the heart rate measurements. Moreover, for each smartwatch, running und cycling distance tracking was tested over six runs of 4,000 m on a 400 m tartan stadium track, six hilly outdoor runs over 3.4 km, and four repetitions of a 36.8 km road bike course, respectively. Three swimming protocols ranging from 200 m to 400 m were performed in triplicate in a 50 m Olympic-size pool, evaluating tracked distance and detected number of strokes. The mean absolute percentage errors (MAPEs) for the average heart rate measurements varied between 3.1% and 8.3%, with the coefficient of determination ranging from 0.22 to 0.79. MAPE results ranged from 0.8% to 12.1% for the 4,000 m run on the 400 m track, from 0.2% to 7.5% for the 3.4 km outdoor run, and from 0.0% to 4.2% for the 36.8 km bike ride. For the swimming tests, in contrast, the deviations from the true distance varied greatly, starting at a 0.0% MAPE for the 400 m freestyle and reaching 91.7% for the 200 m medley with style changes every 25 m. In summary, for some of the smartwatches, the measurement results deviated substantially from the true values. Measurements taken while road cycling over longer distances with only a few curves were in relative terms more accurate than for outdoor runs and even more accurate than for the 400 m track. In the swimming exercises, the accuracy of the measured distances was severely deteriorated by the medley changes among the majority of the smartwatches. Altogether, the results of this study should help in assessing the accuracy and thus suitability of smartwatches for general triathlon training.

In the last decade, a higher level of reliability became a compulsory demand when it comes to modern DC-DC converters. This work addresses the main reliability metrics: the failure rate λλ and MTBF of an output capacitor bank used within a high current low voltage buck converter due to many studies have shown that the output capacitor bank was demonstrated being the most critical component within the converter. Many authors treated this issue, usually by doing reliability predictions. The majority of the papers use only one specific Standard Prediction to solve the problem. Herein calculation was done using both the older standard MIL-HDBK-217 and the latest one Telcordia SR-332, providing a benchmark comparison between the two which is a helpful tool for the output capacitor selection in the early stage design. Military standard was well accepted for decades in order to reliability prediction even on industrial electronics and is still used today under a critical manner because no more update after the latest version MIL-HDBK-217F - Notice 2 released in 1995. Since then, newer prediction standards had appeared in the electronics reliability market. Over time, this standard was mostly used but it does not accurately model the reliability because lack of taking account of mission profile. The above-mentioned newer standard – i.e., Telcordia SR-332 is trying to compensate also the lack of the newest component technology in the older standard (which is the first standard released on the market) supplying useful design data for design engineers who use the so-called “design with the reliability in mind” concept. Within the paper were established the environmental condition for the passive components by means of a PoL (Point of load) buck converter that is used for both calculation methods. The influence of temperature and several specific concepts like reference conditions, operating conditions, ripple, and internal self-heating were taking account in order to display the results. The temperature for the capacitor’s capsule needed in π_T stress factor calculation was derived by PSPICE simulation. High fidelity and dedicated SPICE models provided by the manufacturer were used for MOSFETs, polymer electrolytic, and MLCC capacitors that compose the converter.

Nowadays there is a need to increase the density of interconnections on printed circuit boards (PCBs). Does this mean that the only way out for quality PCB manufacturing is to proportional increase in precision of equipment, or is there another way? One of the main constraints to increasing the density of PCB interconnections is the transition holes. As the number of conductive layers increases, the number of vias increases and they cover a significant space on the PCB. On the other hand, reducing the size of the vias is limited by the capability of spatial alignment of the PCB stack during manufacturing. There are standards that set limits for the design of contact pads on a PCB (IPC-A-600G, IPC-6012B). However, depending on the precision of production, the contact pads may be of poor quality. This raises the issue of determining the reliability of a contact pad with defined parameters at the design stage, taking into account manufacturing capabilities. This research proposes an analytical method for evaluation of reliability of a via or plated through-hole based on calculation of its probability of production in accordance with the current standards. On the basis of the method a model was developed both for the case of a contact pad without any conductors connected to it (nonfunctional contact pad) and for the real case with a connected conductor. The model estimates the probability of making an acceptable via for a given reliability class depending on parameters such as the conductor width (minimum permissible and usable), drilled hole diameter and pad diameter, as well as the accuracy of the drilling operation. The analysis of the modeling results showed that for the real case, a reduction in the reliability class would insignificantly affect the probability of making an acceptable via due to the tight limitation on the connection place of the conductor and the contact pad. In conclusion, we propose an algorithm for determining the optimal parameters of teardrops to minimize the negative impact of the conductor on the reliability of the vias.

Long span cable-stayed bridge is the main bridge type with a span of more than 400 meters. It is generally designed as a double tower long-span structure with good spanning capacity and economic performance. Wind resistance safety performance is the main index to control the long-span cable-stayed bridge structure. During the operation of long-span cable-stayed bridge structure, because the service life of the cable is far less than the design life of the structure, the wind resistance performance of the structure will inevitably deteriorate significantly, which will seriously affect the structural service performance of symmetric cable-stayed bridge. Based on symmetric reliability theory, this paper takes flutter and static wind stability of long-span cable-stayed bridge structure as the main design control index, uses positive reliability theory to calculate the reliability index of symmetric cable-stayed bridge structure, uses inverse reliability theory to calculate the safety factor of symmetric cable-stayed bridge structure, and evaluates the wind resistant time-varying performance of long-span cable-stayed bridge structure by comprehensively considering the reliability index and safety factor. Taking a practical project of a long-span cable-stayed bridge as a specific case, the wind resistant time-varying reliability of the bridge during its operation for more than 30 years is analyzed, and the parameter sensitivity is analyzed. The results show that the wind resistance performance of the cable-stayed bridge structure is obviously affected by the cable, and the degradation of the cable performance will have an important impact on the wind resistance time-varying performance of the structure, especially the critical wind speed of the structure has obvious time-varying characteristics. The safety factor and reliability index can objectively evaluate the wind resistance time-varying performance of the long-span cable-stayed bridge structure.

A comprehensive review of uncertainties in power systems, covering modeling, impact, and mitigation, is essential to understand and manage the challenges faced by the electric grid. Uncertainties in power systems can arise from various sources and can have significant implications for grid reliability, stability, and economic efficiency. Australia, susceptible to extreme weather such as wildfires and heavy rainfall, faces vulnerabilities in its power network assets. The decentralized distribution of population centers poses economic challenges in supplying power to remote areas, a crucial consideration for emerging technologies emphasized in this paper. In addition, the evolution of modern power grids, facilitated by deploying the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), has also brought new challenges to the system due to the risk of cyber-attacks via communication link. However, the existing literature lacks a comprehensive review and analysis of uncertainties in modern power systems, encompassing uncertainties related to weather events, cyberattacks, and asset management, as well as the advantages and limitations of various mitigation approaches. To fill this void, this review covers a broad spectrum of uncertainties considering their impacts on the power system and explores conventional robust control, and modern probabilistic and data-driven approaches for modelling and correlating the uncertainty events to the state of the grid for optimal decision making. This article also investigates the development of robust and scenario-based operations, control technologies for microgrids (MGs) and energy storage systems (ESSs), and demand-side frequency control ancillary service (D-FCAS) and reserve provision for frequency regulation to ensure a design of uncertainty-tolerance power system. This review delves into the trade-offs linked with the implementation of mitigation strategies, such as reliability, computational speed, and economic efficiency. It also explores how these strategies may influence the planning and operation of future power grids.

The Republic of Djibouti is a small country in the Horn of Africa and, as in most developing countries, rain gauges are sparse and data are scarce. This study aims to report on the reliability of gridded precipitation datasets (P datasets) across the Republic of Djibouti through direct comparisons with rain gauge measurements from the annual to the daily time scales. Our specific objective is to be able to use such products in the context of hydrological modeling at a daily time step. Given the scarcity of available data in the Republic of Djibouti, our study was carried out on two time windows (1980-1990 and 2008-2013) and two gauge networks with different spatial resolutions: the southeast of the Republic of Djibouti (5000 km2) and the Ambouli catchment (794 km2), which drains the city of Djibouti. The reliability of these products is analyzed with quantitative metrics and categorical metrics, exclusively at a daily time step for the latter. The performance of the P datasets degrades from the annual time scale to the daily time scale. Even though the same products exhibit the best performance at the various time scales, the performance of most of the products differs from one spatial scale to another. Our results demonstrate the importance of the temporal and spatial windows, as the same products can perform differently according to the scale. For all the spatiotemporal scales, the most reliable product is MSWEP v.2.2. This P dataset is derived from a combination of satellite products (multiple sensors such as infrared and passive microwave), reanalysis products, and rain gauge observations. A strong discrepancy between rain gauge observations and P datasets is revealed according to the categorical metric at a daily time step. The analysis of rainfall events triggering runoff, using a 10 mm rainfall threshold showed that the most efficient products were unable to accurately detect such events at a daily time step, with a significant underestimation of rainfall events higher than 10 mm. None of these products, even the most reliable, can be used for a calibration/validation of a hydrological model at a daily time step.

Background/Objectives: Cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Health-related quality of life is crucial to assess the impact of cardiovascular diseases and to guide therapeutic strategies. The Short Form 36 Health Survey and the RAND 36-Item Health Survey questionnaires are common tools for measuring health-related quality of life in patients with cardiovascular disease, but their reliability may vary according to the population studied. The aim of this study is to compare the reliability of the SF-36 and the RAND-36 in a population with cardiac pathology, addressing the question of which of these instruments offers a more consistent and useful measurement in this specific group. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study carried out at the University Hospital of Burgos (Spain). 413 patients with cardiovascular pathology referred to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit were included. Patients with incomplete data or who did not participate in the program were excluded. Internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha), item-total correlation and reliability and a half-half analysis were performed. Results: Both questionnaires showed similar and adequate reliability for patients with cardiovascular pathology. Internal consistency, as measured by Cronbach’s alpha, was above 0.80 for most dimensions, supporting its robustness. Significant inter-item and inter-dimension correlations were found in both scales, except in some specific cases in the dimension ‘Physical Functioning’. The half-half analysis confirmed the good reliability of both scales. Conclusions: Both the SF-36 and the RAND-36 are highly reliable tools for assessing health-related quality of life in patients with cardiovascular disease. The results may have significant implications for clinical practice, helping in the selection of health-related quality of life monitoring instruments and in the evaluation of the efficacy of therapeutic interventions.

The fault diagnosis of safety critical systems such as wind turbine installations includes extremely challenging aspects that motivate the research issues considered in this paper. In fact, the prompt detection and the reliable diagnosis of faults in their earlier occurrence represent the key point especially for offshore installations. For these plants, operation and maintenance procedures in harsh environments would inevitably increase the cost of the energy production. Therefore, this work investigates fault diagnosis solutions that are considered in a viable way and used as advanced techniques for condition monitoring of dynamic processes. To this end, the work proposes the design of fault diagnosis strategies that exploit the estimation of the fault by means of data--driven approaches. This solution leads to the development of effective methods allowing the management of partially unknown information of the system dynamics, while coping with measurement errors, the model--reality mismatch and other disturbance effects. In mode detail, the proposed data--driven methodologies exploit fuzzy systems and neural networks in order to estimate the nonlinear dynamic relations between the input and output measurements of the considered process and the faults. To this end, the fuzzy and neural network structures are integrated with auto--regressive with exogenous input descriptions, thus making them able to approximate unknown nonlinear dynamic functions with arbitrary degree of accuracy. Once these models are estimated from the input and output data measurement acquired from the considered dynamic process, the capabilities of their fault diagnosis capabilities are validated by using a high--fidelity benchmark that simulates the healthy and the faulty behaviour of a wind turbine system. Moreover, at this stage the benchmark is also useful to analyse the robustness and the reliability characteristics of the developed tools in the presence of model--reality mismatch and modelling error effects featured by the wind turbine simulator. On the other hand, a hardware--in--the--loop tool is finally implemented for testing and comparing the performance of the developed fault diagnosis strategies in a more realistic environment and with respect to different fault diagnosis approaches.

The feasibility of recovering bioactive antioxidants from Phyllantus emblica leaves using ethanol -water mixture (0 – 100%) and heat-assisted extraction technology (HAE-T) was investigated in this present study. To this effect, the process parameter of operating temperature (OT: 30 -50 oC), solid -to-liquid ratio (S:L: 1:20 - 1:60 g/mL) and extraction time (ET: 45 - 180 min) were investigated on the extract total phenolic content (TPC, mg GAE/g d.w), yield (EY, %) and antioxidant activity (μM AAE/g d.w) by employing the Box-Behnken experimental design (BBD) available in response surface methodology (RSM). Multi-objective process optimization using the desirability function algorithm to determine set of process variables that simultaneously optimize process responses of TPC, EY and AA was also investigated. The recovery process was thereafter modeled with BBD-RSM and multi gene genetic programming (MGGP) algorithm and model reliability assessment via Monte Carlo simulation were conducted for the best performing set of models for predicting TPC, EY and AA values. The HPLC characterization of the recovered extract was carried out to ascertain the phenolic compound constituents of the Phyllantus emblica leaf extract. The 50% ethanol solution was found to be the best for the optimal extraction of antioxidants from Phyllantus emblica leaves. The HAE-T was suitable for recovering bioactive extract from Phyllantus emblica leaves and investigated process parameters have impacts on the recovery process. The process parameters that simultaneously gave the optimum EY of 21.6565%, TPC of 67.116 mg GAE/g and AA of 3.68583 µM AAE/g were OT of 41.61 oC, S:L of 1:60 g/mL and ET of 180 min. The HPLC extract profiling revealed that the bioactive constituents present in the recovered extract were betulinic acid, gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, ellagic acid, and ferulic acid. Both the developed BBD-RSM and evolved MGGP-based models predicted the observed process response of TPC, EY and AA satisfactorily with BBD-RSM models marginally better in their predictions. The reliability results showed that the BBD-RSM models predicted TPC, EY and AA values with high certainty of 99.985%, 97.569% and 98.661%, respectively.
